✨✧ Bobby LyleNew Warrior ... CD
Capitol/Soul Brother (UK), 1978. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful record by Bobby Lyle – and a genius blend of jazz, soul, and lots of other righteous sounds! Lyle started out as a keyboardist, but this album really has him taking off as a vocalist too – working in a sweet Roy Ayers-styled groove – one that blends mellow rhythms with warmly jazzy inflections – with roots in fusion, yet a tighter soul finish overall! Lyle's still got a few keyboard flights – of the sort heard on The Genie – but with Wayne Henderson at the production helm, things are a bit tighter overall – given a really wonderful focus that makes Bobby sound better than ever. Titles include the great funky number "Groove (Ain't No Doubt About It)", the warm stepper "Good Inside", and cool keyboard grooves like "Star Traveler", "Missing Your Love", and "Inner Space". CD

✨✧ Aaron ChildsSoul Nostalgia Collection ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2024. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
That's a nostalgia-looking cover on the front, and the music definitely has an old school vibe – but all the work is from contemporary underground soul artist Aaron Child – brought together here as a full length collection of work that originally appeared on the digital-only EP releases My Way, Peach, and No Rewrites! The sound is nice and lean, with an 80s-styled love of keyboards, basslines, and guitar – often intimate, and never overwhelming – which is a great fit for Child's vocal style. Titles include "U Got Time", "Don't Sleep", "Sunshine", "Pressure", "My Way", "Scratch", "Warrior", "Golden Hour", "Good 2 U", and "Bubbly". CD

David MurrayShakill's Warrior ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1991. Used ... $9.99
A surprisingly nice album of straight ahead tenor tracks from David Murray – playing here in a quartet with guitarist Stanley Franks, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and the great Don Pullen, who plays organ on the session! The album's not exactly in the classic soul jazz organ/tenor mode – but it is one of the few that Murray ever recorded, and it's quite interesting to hear him in this sort of a format. Plus, it was also one of the few recorded during that magic year of 1991 – when DIW really seemed to be getting things right, turning out some of the few truly genius albums in the history of the label. Titles include "Milano Strut", "Black February", "At The Cafe Central", "In The Spirit", and "High Priest". CD

Ashtree, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $1.99
Original cast production of this semi-popular musical from the early 70s – a collection of South African tunes performed by a large uncredited cast. The tunes have a nice groove that's sort of in the Miriam Makeba soul mode, mixed with others that get a bit more folksy and use a lot of percussion – and most titles on the set have vocals by a large ensemble. Titles include "Bona Noga", "The Witchdoctor", "Baby Baby Soweto By Night", "The Click Arieni", "Egoli", "Andy's Song", "The Warrior", "The Digger", "Ipi-Tombi", and "Bayete". LP, Vinyl record album

MatataWanna Do My Thing – The Complete President Recordings (Air Fiesta/Independence/bonus tracks) ... CD
President/RPM (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 16.99
Some of the heaviest funk recorded on the UK scene in the early 70s – courtesy of a Kenyan group who were making their home in London at the time – and cooking up music that was a fantastic blend of soulful modes from both their homeland, and the world of American funk and soul! These guys have a sharper, tighter style than some of the more progressive or psych-influenced groups who were part of the English post-colonial scene – tracks that are shorter, with maybe a bit more traditional percussion – but also plenty of wicked drums, and the sorts of basslines that you'd normally find only on funky 45s! And while Matata's music has been reissued before, this package features two full albums – Matata Air Fiesta (aka Wild River) and Independence – plus bonus singles too! Titles include "I Want You (alt version)", "Mbongo", "Funky Feeling demo)", "Good Samaritan", "I Feel Funky", "Return To You", "Good Good Understanding", "Jungle Warrior", "Wild River", "Mayo Mayo", "Picha Yako", "You've Gotta Find Me", "Talkin Talkin", "I Believed Her", "Vijana Africa", "Wanna Do My Thing", and "Return To You". 34 tracks in all! ✨✧ Warriors (Incognito)Behind The Mask ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1982. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great early 80s set from Bluey & the Incognito crew – conceived as the follow up to their benchmark Jazzfunk LP – but this tighter, more fusion inspired set ultimately moved into a sound that was just divergent enough of the established Incognito style that they issued it as The Warriors! It's got plenty of jazzy funk and soul flowing throughout, so the approach isn't radically different – lots of dancefloor ready fusiony grooves with some really great solos from an incredible group of Brit musicians. The heavy bass groove of Paul "Tubbs" Williams is integral, with guitar and vocals by Bluey and piano & synth by Pete Hinds – and those 3 co-produced the album – with drums by Jeff Dunn, guitars by Ronnie Mason, keys by Mattie Collins, horns by Guy Barker and Chris Hunter, percussion by Simon Morthon and a sweet backup vocals from the trio of Tessa Webb, Sharon Campell and Jackie Benar. Includes "Hot Apple", "The Warrior", "Midnight Oil", 'Bustin' Loose", "Warrior's Theme", "Destination", "Je Ne Sais Quoi", "Drive" and "Unsung Heroes". CD

✨✧ Fertile GroundPerception ... CD
Counterpoint (UK), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite bands of the past 25 years – honest! Fertile Ground are amazing – a hip, spiritual jazzy soul combo with a power that rivals the early work of Earth Wind & Fire, or the classic mid 70s recordings of Doug & Jean Carn. At some level, though, they're even better than both – as they've got a totally tight sound that's a no-bullshit approach to the material, completely honest, and a real breath of fresh air in a world of cliched politics and empty righteousness. The vocals are wonderful – on a level with Dee Dee Bridgewater at her best – and the rest of the backing features Latin percussion, Fender Rhodes, and saxes. This full-length set combines tracks from the group's first two albums – one of which is now out of print – for a 16 track package that's a great introduction to their work. Titles include "Libations", "Broken Branches", "Be Natural", "Ghetto Butterflies", "My Friend The Moon", "Black Sunshine", "Runaway Slave", "Misguided Warrior", "Colors Of The Night", "Let The Wind Blow", "Soul Mates", and "Sentimental Groove". ✨✧ Sherman Irby & MomentumCerulean Canvas ... CD
Black Warrior, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest album we've ever heard from saxophonist Sherman Irby – and that's saying a lot, because he's given us some really fantastic records over the years! Yet while those albums were always graced with Irby's wonderful tone and phrasing on alto sax, this set seems to showcase an even grander musical vision, and portray him as a leader with deep currents of soul and sophistication! Irby's been playing a lot with the Jazz At Lincoln Center orchestra – so that may be part of the shift here – but the music is all still very much his own, just maybe amped up even more than before – and delivered by a wonderful group that features Eric Reed on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – along with guest work from Vincent Garnder and Elliot Mason on trombone, and performances by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis on two tracks. Reed is especially wonderful – pulling out these dark tones that really deepen the sound of the songs, especially when Irby's taking off on one of his amazing alto flights. Titles include "Racine", "Contemplation", "Smile Please", "Sybad", "Willie's Beat", "Blue Twirl", and "Blues For Poppa Reed". CD

Dream WarriorsAnd Now The Legacy Begins ... CD
4th & Broadway, 1990. Used ... $0.99
The standout LP from The Dream Warriors – a quirky hip hop group who first sprung onto the scene in the wake of De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest. The duo were Canadian, and had a style that was a bit more open-ended than others – with room for odd samples and a keen sense of humor. Both of these are displayed well in the album's classic track "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style" – a pretty great number that sampled heavily from Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova", many years before the track became better known as the theme from Austin Powers. Other tracks include "Follow Me Not", "Ludi", "Tune From the Missing Channel", and "Wash Your Face in My Sink". " CD

✨✧ Life ForceFearless Warriors ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweetly soulful fusion from the Atlanta scene – a wonderfully righteous album, and a pretty darn obscure one as well! Life Force play here in a style that reminds us a lot of the artists on the Black Jazz label in the decade before – particularly the group Awakening, with their great blend of sharp edges and funkier moments – but also a bit like Rudolph Johnson, given the strong reed work in the set. The combo's a sextet – with alto and soprano by Joe Jennings, tenor and soprano by Howard Nicholson, and keyboards by Oliver Wells – and although the set was recorded at the start of the 80s, the overall sound is much more 70s indie soul fusion overall – nicely stripped-down and never too jamming – with just as much focus on the core rhythmic elements and grooves of the tunes as there is the bolder solos of the group members. Titles include "To Pharoah With Love", "Fearless Warriors", "Wow", "I Remember Duke", "Sister Bea", and "Atlanta Anna". CD

Max Roach's masterpiece! This record is one of his most perfectly realized visions – and it's a marvelous album that combines politics and modern jazz, yet still manages to swing! The players are some of the hippest that Roach ever worked with – and include Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Clifford Jordan, and Julian Priester – and the record features some of the best-ever singing from Abbey Lincoln! Abbey's incredible on the track "Mendacity", an incredibly haunting Civil Rights-era number that should go right up there with "Strange Fruit", and which features wonderful alto work from Dolphy! She also sings wordlessly on the track "Garvey's Ghost" – and then sits out the rest of the set so that Max and the group can wail on the tracks "Praise For A Martyr", "Man From South Africa", and "Tender Warriors". A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. ✨✧ Francisco Mora CatlettMora/Mora 2 ... CD
AACE/Far Out (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of great albums back to back – both rare albums from a percussionist who worked with Sun Ra! First up is Mora volume 1 – a legendary early set from percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett – and a really sublime blend of spiritual jazz and Latin rhythms! Mora's percussion is definitely at the core – but the set also features wonderful contributions from Vincent Bowens on tenor and soprano sax, Jerome LeDuff on berimbau, Alberto Nacif on quinto, and Detroit jazz legend Kenny Cox on piano! There's a balance here that really matches the best Strata East energy of the 70s – an open, flowing approach that's completely sublime, and very righteous too – even more so than anything Mora's done since the 70s – making this record one of his greatest achievements ever. Tersa Mora sings a bit of vocals at times – and titles include "Afra Jum", "Five AM", "Rumba Morena", "Samba De Amor", and "Cultural Warrior". Mora 2 is a set recorded in Detroit, but one that's got a globe's worth of elements in the mix – originally recorded in the mid 80s, but not released until a brief CD issue in the early part of the 21st Century! Despite that history, the album's a really timeless record that encompasses a world's worth of elements in jazz! Francisco Mora Catlett's at the height of his powers here – leading the group with a sense of righteous majesty that takes us back to some of the most ambitious heirs of the post-Coltrane generation, but with perhaps an oddly rhythmic twist as well – such as you might find in some of the 70s classics of Bobby Vince Paunetto. Echoes of Latin, Afro, and spiritual jazz come together as one – soaring to the skies on soulful waves of sound – brought together with a sense of focus and spirit that really moves us a lot. Players include Marcus Belgrave and John Douglass on trumpets, Sherman Mitchell on trombone, Vincent Bowens on tenor and flute, Alex Harding on baritone and bass clarinet, Kenny Cox on piano, and Rodney Whitaker on bass – and titles include "Samba/Conga De Amor", "Amazona Prelude/Dawn", "Old Man Joe", "Por Que Paro", and "Afra-Jum (parts 2 & 3)". BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Righteous jazz, but with a bit of a funky twist too – a great selection of classics from the years when 60s soul jazz was reaching out with a new sense of pride and power, and finding a way embrace all of the musical changes that were coming its way! The music here is often by artists who might have been playing straighter standards, or bluesy organ numbers a few years before – but who here are set fire by the changes of the 60s – both at a musical level, and a political one – the latter in ways that resonate strongly even in the instrumental passages on the set! The title is a reference to a famous quote by Eldridge Cleaver, used often by The Black Panthers – and the set begins with Joe Henderson's number of the same name, "If You're Not Part Of The Solution You're Part Of The Problem" – and follows with "Let's Make Peace & Stop The War" by Funk Inc, "Bitches Brew" by Eddie Jefferson, "HNIC" by Harold Vick, "Tawhid" by Johnny Lytle, "John Coltrane" by Clifford Jordan, "Celestial Bodies" by Catalyst, "Warriors Of Peace" by Azar Lawrence, "Africans Unite" by Gary Bartz NTU Troop, and "Black Feeling" by Johnny Hammond Smith. All tracks are nice and long – and the set has a great mix of spiritual ideals with a few funky currents. CD

Blackout, 1999. Used ... $16.99
A wonderful album of spiritual soul jazz – very much in the tradition of older groups from the 70s, but with a hip new edge that makes it one of the gleaming jewels in our NuSoul section! The band follow in the tradition of older east coast underground groups like Oneness Of Juju, but they also share some of the modern soulful influences of singers like N'Dambe or Laurnea – and lead vocalist Navasha Daya is one of our favorite new soul artists of recent years. The band mixes percussion, keyboards, trumpet, and vocals into a swirling mix that is as righteous and knowledgeable as it is soulful and funky. The band have two tracks on the excellent Jazz Biznez 2 compilation – but the whole CD's wonderful, and we can't recommend it highly enough if you dig spiritual 70s soul jazz with vocals. Titles include "Be Natural", "Broken Branches", "Let The Wind Blow", "Homage", "Colors Of The Night", "New Born Grass", and "Misguided Warriors". CD

Spiritual sounds from the source – a host of incredible tracks from a time when jazz was really opening up into new dimensions – as players stepped forward in a wave of strong post-Coltrane energy to really push the music into the skies! The music here can be seen as a blueprint for generations to come – styles that are now getting new fame in the hands of Kamasi Washington and some of his contemporaries, but which flowered first in recordings like these – pulled from the early 70s vaults of Prestige, Milestone, and Muse Records – and brought together here in a really wonderful collection! Tracks are all nice and long, and the set showcases an older generation of jazz musicians really flowering at the time – balanced perfectly between a sense of freedom and a spiritual soul – on titles that include "Celestial Blues" by Gary Bartz NTU Troop, "Let Us Go To Higher Heights" by Carlos Garnett, "The Almoravid" by Joe Chambers, "Brown Eyes" by Charles Earland, "Warriors Of Peace" by Azar Lawrence, "Aftermath" by Oliver Nelson, "Josie Black" by Hampton Hawes, "Let It Take Your Mind" by Bayete Umbra Zindiko, "Fire" by Joe Henderson and Alice Coltrane, and "The Free Slave" by Roy Brooks. On-U Sound (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s/2023. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
All the great early albums from Creation Rebel – plus their excellent comeback too! The set begins with Dub From Creation – not just the debut album from Creation Rebel, but also a set that marks the first studio work from the young Adrian Sherwood – part of the long On-U Sound legacy to come, and a wealth of other wonderful music! There's a spareness here that's great – maybe a bit less dark than later Sherwood projects, but no less stark – with melodica and keyboards weaving nicely amidst the dubby rhythms! Titles include "Basic Principals", "Dub Fusion", "Liberation", "Rising Star", "Vision Of Creation", and "Creation In A Iration". Next is Close Encounters Of The Third World – an early part of the On-U Sound legacy, even if the set wasn't issued on the label – a key effort by Creation Rebel that features recording work done both in London and Kingston, layered together in a beautifully dubby way! The sound here is definitely underground – full of message-oriented lyrics from Crucial Tony, who sings in a style that definitely earns him his name – with great melodica and organ flowing through the mix next to Lizard's bass – topped with added horn work from The Arabs in all the right spots! The production is superb – flat on the drums, wide on the sides, which makes for a really wonderful groove – on titles that include "Know Yourself", "Conspiring", "Creation Fever", "Natty Conscience Free", and "Joyful Noise". Rebel Vibrations features early production genius from Adrian Sherwood – and a record that sets the tone for all the On-U Sound genius to come! The set's a huge step forward from even the previous excellent Creation Rebel album – as the way the sounds are layered together is incredible – almost modes learned from post-punk production, but used to deliver a pure, righteous dub album – one that drops out all the vocals, and allows you to concentrate even more on the totally wicked instrumentation! The set features stunning drums from Style Scott, heady bass from Lizard, and all sorts of very cool keyboard work from Clifton Morrison – used in these ways that float about like a swarm of sounds, especially when mixed with the melodica of Doctor Pablo. The whole thing's amazing – and titles include "Diverse Doctor", "Hunger & Strife", "Jungle Affair", "Rebel Vibration", "Black Lion Dub", and "Mountain Melody". Starship Africa is a brilliant Creation Rebel effort for On-U Sound from the dawn of the 80s – landing in the futuristic dub spacecraft that is their Starship Africa – percussion heavy and spaced out ingenuity from Adrian Sherwood & co! Tripped, echoey atmospherics that's cast as a soundtrack to movie that doesn't exist, the music is forward thinking, boundary busting dubby grooves exists out of time and sounds great to this day. Includes "Starship Africa" (Sections 1-5) and "Space Movement" (Sections 1-4). On Psychotic Jonkanoo, Crucial Tony is back in the mix for this righteous early 80s album from Creation Rebel – a set that has Adrian Sherwood only furthering his production genius as he layers together stunning instrumental work from the group! The presence of the vocals has the instrumentation slightly back in the mix – but there's still a great run of rhythms throughout, all driven by the mighty heady basslines of Lizard Logan! There's less keyboards than before, but still some nice electronic bits all over the place – and titles include "The Dope", "African Space", "Threat To Creation", "Highest Degree", "Mother Don't Cry", and "Drum Talk". From 2023, Hostile Environment is the first album in many years from this legendary studio project from On-U Sound and Adrian Sherwood – and one that makes us feel as if the passage of decades hasn't happened at all! Sherwood's production is still wonderful – and, if anything, maybe less showy, or more soulful, or less moody – just something that seems to let the work of the group come through with energy that's wonderfully warm and organic, while still resonating with plenty of touches that will make longtime label fans proud! Vocals are shared between Charlie Eskimo Fox and Mr Magoo, and the set also features guest appearances from Prince Far I and Daddy Freddy – on titles that include "That's More Like It" "Jubilee Clock", "Swiftly", "Stonebridge Warrior", "Crown Hill Road", "The People's Sound", and "Whatever It Takes". Tenorist Ryan Oliver really sounds great here – stretching out on long, live tracks that provide a perfect showcase for his well-phrased lines and soulful solos! We'll be honest in saying that we maybe never gave Ryan such strong props before this set – but the album's one of those live outings that maybe have the leader sparkling even more than in another setting – a bold leader who really brings a lot out of the group, and a soloist who never falters for imagination when given the space to really open up! The set features a core group with Brian Dickson on piano, Terry Clarke on drums, and Neil Swainson on some especially great bass – he can really be a secret hero on sets like this – and Dee Daniels comes in an sings on two of the album's tracks as well. ✨✧ Creation RebelHostile Environment (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
On-U Sound (UK), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first album in many years from this legendary studio project from On-U Sound and Adrian Sherwood – and one that makes us feel as if the passage of decades hasn't happened at all! ✨✧ VariousCelestial Blues – Cosmic, Political, & Spiritual Jazz 1970 to 1974 ... LP
BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album
