Flying LotusFlamagra – Instrumentals (with bonus animated slipmat) ... LP
Warp, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $37.99 42.99
We really loved the Flamagra album from Flying Lotus, but this set of instrumentals maybe shows off even more of the deeper currents in his music! The record's not the usual instrumental variant – in that these tracks don't really come across as cuts with the vocals removed – and instead feel like all new jazz interpretations of the original album, with contributions from a great array of guests – including Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Brandon Coleman, Taylor Graves, and others – all moving together in a mix of spaced-out jazz, heavy funk, and some key cosmic touches – a beautiful blend of soul and sci-fi that really furthers the Flying Lotus legacy. Titles include "Heroes In A Half Shell", "Post Requisite", "All Spies", "Takashi", "Spontaneous (inst)", "The Climb (inst)", "Find Your Own Way Home", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Andromeda", "Say Something", "Hot Oct", "Thank U Malcolm", and "Burning Down The House (inst)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Really cool vinyl pressing – with a bonus slipmat that contains zoetrope animation!)

Flying LotusFlying Lotus Presents INFINITY Infinitum – Maida Vale Session EP (with bonus download) ... LP
Warp, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A really great moment from Flying Lotus – a live set recorded for Gilles Peterson in 2010, at a point that's kind of the start of a whole new generation in jazzy modes! The lineup here features tenor from Ravi Coltrane, light string touches from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and some especially great bass ruminations from Thundercat – in a mode that's spiritual, but also ethereal too – kind of a criss-crossing of two sides of the Cali underground, in ways that find great expression under the loving ears of Peterson. A great bridge between two generations of Warp Records – with titles that include "Golden Axe", "Tea Leaf Dancers", "Drips", and "Mmm Hmm". LP, Vinyl record album

GonjasufiMU.ZZ.LE ... CD
Warp, 2011. Used ... $4.99
Thickly atmospheric mood music with a delicate melodicism flowing underneath – a brilliant set from Gonjasufi – following up the Sufi And A Killer collabo with Gaslamp Killer and a solid remix album! Described as a "mini album" (it's got 10 tracks and runs about 25 minutes), MU.ZZ.LE is ultimately just as impressive as his other couple of releases on Warp – whether it's intended to be considered a proper second album or not. Murky, psychedelic beatcraft that's hypnotic as can be – with fuzzed out elements balanced by bits of piano and other lighter particles. It's also song based, if loosely so. Unique work from a hugely talented figure whose no doubt going to be a making great music for years to come! Includes "White Picket Fence", "Feedin' Birds", "Nikels And Dimes", "Rubberband", "Venom", "Timeout", "Skin", "The Blame", "Blacksuit" and "Sniffin'". CD

✨✧ Prefuse 73 feat Ghostface & EL-PHideyaface (Prefuse 73 orig, EL-P mix, Prefuse edit inst, Shaolin finale) ... 12-inch
Warp, 2005. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $8.99
A tense, impressive track from the increasingly unpredictable beat architect Prefuse 73 – featuring mic work from the unlikely pair of Ghostface and EL-P! The inspiration behind this track really couldn't be more exciting – the gifted, rugged Wu Tang trained master Ghostface has always worked best over grimey soul beats, and the clean mechanics of the Prefuse sound brings a really uneasy, very compelling backdrop. The angry, paranoid style of EL-P makes it just that much more tense. The single includes the Prefuse original mix, a EL-P remix, and a piano-driven Shaolin finale. Nice! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Vinyl plays with a short click on the first track.)

✨✧ Danny BrownUknowhatimsayin (with sticker sheet & download) ... LP
Warp, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The unpredictable Danny Brown delivers another leftfield gem, reinventing himself in subtle ways without leaving behind that distinctively voiced, playfully rhymed, smart yet profane style we've always loved! He's a hip hop genre unto himself here, mixing dirty jokes and earnest self reflection like no one else. This one has and executive producer credit for the legendary Q-Tip and individual tracks produced by Tip himself, Flying Lotus & Thundercat, JPEGMAFIA and Paul White, all of whom are wise enough to frame Danny Brown's one of a kind voice with just enough oddball elements and just enough head nodding funk. Includes "Change Up", "Theme Song", "Dirty Laundry", "3 Tearz" with Run The Jewels, "Belly Of The Beast" and the title track with Obongjayer, "Shine" with Blood Orange, "Savage Nomad", "Negro Spiritual" with JPEGMAFIA and "Combat". ✨✧ Aphex TwinSyro ... LP
Warp, 2014. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The first proper full length album by Aphex Twin in more than a dozen years – and like all of his preceding efforts, he transcends all electronic music genre distinctions, delivering a sound that's distinctly his own – a sound that'll stand the test of time! Glance at the ultra-complicated track titles, and you might expect the strangest, most outre aural science of his career, but to the contrary, it's highly melodic and insistent stuff – finding him him working comfortably at home in his own canon, without repeating past glories. Excellent later work from one of the most consistently rewarding electronic music artists of the past several decades. It seems like Richard D. James doesn't ever bother to release his stuff if he doesn't have something great in the hopper, and Syro is indeed pretty great! "Minipops 67 [120.2][Source Field Mix]", "XMAS_EVET10 [120] [Thanaton3 Mix]", "[Produk 29 [101]", "4 bit 9d api+e+6 [126.26]", "180db_ [130]", "CIRCLONT6A [141.98][Syrobonkus Mix]", "CIRCLONT14 [152.97][Shrymoming Mix]", "Syro u473t8+e [141.98][Piezoluminescence Mix]", "PAPAT4 [155][Pineal Mix]", "Aisatsana [102]" and more. Jimi TenorNY Hel Barca ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1990s/Early 2000s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99
A collection of early work from Jimi Tenor – an artist who's maybe known best these days for his spiritual jazz and funk recordings, but one who sounded very different at the time of this material! Jimi issued much of this music on the Warp label back in the 90s – and although there's some funky elements, there's also a fair bit electronic elements too – much more in the old school Warp mode, but evolving in a surprising way over time – particularly on some of the late 90s material, in which Jimi might use larger orchestrations, or bits of reeds – warming things up, and taking directions that would mature much more strongly in the 21st Century. In a way, a lot of these cuts are a nice link with an earlier generation of electronic European experimentation – of the sort the Bureau B label usually reissues – and titles include "Spell", "Tesla", "Year Of The Apocalypse", "Xinotepe Heat", "Take Me Baby", "My Mind", "Natural Cosmic Relief", "A Daughter Of The Snow", "Shore Hotel", "Outta Space", "Unmentionables", and "Rubberdressing". Mal Waldron with Eric Dolphy & Booker ErvinQuest ... CD
New Jazz/OJC, 1961. Used ... $8.99
Pivotal work from Waldron – stepping out of the blowing session mode, emerging as one of the 60s most striking moderinists. Like a lot of Waldron's records from the time, this set shows an amazing desire for new forms and modern ideas, and the mix of players – Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Ron Carter, Joe Benjamin, and Charlie Persip – pulls the material in a number of different ways. Carter plays bowed cello, as he did on Dolphy's Out There session, and he gives the set a dark moody feel. Ervin's in his best modernist mode, and he ably trades lines with Dolphy and keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Waldron's writing and arranging is superb, and the tracks feature a lot of weird time structures and unusual modal patterns. Includes the tracks "Status Seeking", "Warm Canto", "Warp and Woof", and "Fire Waltz". CD

Chucho Zarzosa Y Su ConjuntoConcierto En Jazz ... LP
RCA, 1962. Very Good ... $24.99
A live set from this obscure Mexican jazz combo – recorded in the early 60s, in a mode that's kind of a small combo take on an Ellington sound, but with some freer twists too! The approach is nicely offbeat – starting out familiar at first, but then opening up with some offbeat elements that come partly from the group's phrasing, and partly from the way the whole thing's put together – all of which makes for a great little record that goes way past the usual! Pianist Chucho Zarzosa heads of the group – playing an odd-toned instrument with a lot of charm – and other players include Pepe Solis on trumpet, Rodolfo Sanchez on baritone and alto, Mario Ballina on bass, and Felix Agueros on drums – working together nicely on the album's four long tracks. Sanchez is especially nice – with an unusual tone that really comes through on the album's extended version of "Peter Gunn", which features him blowing oddly and in lots of curvy ways – and other tracks include "Perdido", "My Funny Valentine", and "Take the A Train". ✨✧ VariousBlack Riot – Early Jungle, Rave, & Hardcore ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Amazing sounds from a time when the London scene really took off – when it left behind some of its slavish love of American sounds in previous decades, and exploded with blinding dancefloor energy of its own! The music here represents a true UK hybrid – crafted after years of American house hitting the UK shores, transforming into the happier grooves of the early e-driven years, all while Thatcher's Britain kept stepping further into the dark. Enter the sounds of the city – a new wave of electric energy that was instantly urban and cosmic at the same time – beats that were as bold as hip hop, but even faster than house music – balanced by heavy-stepping, bass-bottom cuts that represented a far evolution beyond more familiar dub! The mix of modes set a fire that was heard around the world – leading to rhythmic changes for decades to come – and this great little package samples some of the best from the underground at the time, a scene that was already getting plenty of its own inspiration from the young Soul Jazz label. Titles include "Durban Poison" by Babylon Timewarp, "The Smokers Rhythm" by Rhythm For Reasons, "Snowball Remix" by Trip One, "Time & Age" by The Freaky, "Tings A Go On" by DJ Dubplate, "RK1" by The Terrorist, "Way Of Life" by New Vision, "Chill Out" by Hi Fi Power, "House Sensation" by Nu Jacks, and "Burial" by Leviticus.
