Danny BrownQuaranta ... CD
Warp, 2024. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Maybe the deepest, darkest album ever recorded by Danny Brown – a set done at a time when the rapper was at a personal crossroads, and responded to some changes in his life with some incredibly powerful tracks! The production feels more textured and layered than some of Danny's other albums – and the lyrics open up in ways that are very personal, but very sharply pointed as well – echoed by key contributions from Kassa Overall, Mike, and Bruiser Wolf along the way! Titles include "Tantor", "Shakedown", "Hanami", "Bass Jam", "Down Wit It", "Celibate", "Jenn's Terrific Vacation", "YBP", and "Dark Sword Angel". CD

Warp, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". ✨✧ Flying LotusUntil The Quiet Comes ... CD
Warp, 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The best yet from Flying Lotus – who we keep allowing ourselves to believe has hit an insurmountable peak with each new record – but he just keeps getting better! Where the preceding Cosmogramma upped the stranger, spacier and more abstract textures, Until The Quiet Comes is a bit more inviting – and to his credit, Flying Lotus keeps things as innovative as ever, while still giving this one just a bit more immediately appealing atmosphere. There's nearly always a compelling beat, whether it's abstract boom bap or bubbly and synthy, with heavy bass and thick waves of sound floating over. An incredible roster of guests contribute, too – including string-arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson, vocalists Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, keyboardist Dorian Concept, and others – but there's little doubt that this is purely the Flying Lotus show. Greatness! Titles include "All In", "Sultan's Request", "See Thru To U" with Erykah Badu, "DMT Song" with Thundercat, "The Nightcaller", "Only If You Wanna", "Electric Candyman" with Thom Yorke, "Hunger" with Niki Randa, "Phantasm" with Laura Darlington, "Dream To Me" and more. Warp, 2012. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Ambient Brian Eno at its best – a contemporary record, but one that feels like it could have been released right after Music For Airports – given the overall sound! Tunes are very spare and spacious – listed with geometric images for titles on the back cover, right out of Eno's early Ambient series for EG – and served up with these slow-moving sounds that are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – including slight use of moog and violin. Really great stuff – the kind of record that really restores our faith in Eno! CD

Warp, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from Brian Eno – music that feels like it came right out of the same period as his early discreet music experiments – and which reminds us that, although countless others have explored this territory, nobody does it better than the man who invented it! The sounds are spare, yet never meaningless – beautifully constructed with this hint of melody in the air – a slowness that only seems to create deeper contemplation of the few elements – and a sense of perfection that makes both the silences and sounds resonate with undeniable meaning. One long piece – and a record that we'd put on a par with his classic Music For Airports! CD

Warp, 2019. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The unpredictable Danny Brown delivers another leftfield gem, reinventing himself in subtle ways without leaving behind that distinctively voiced, playfully rhymed, smart yet profane style we've always loved! He's a hip hop genre unto himself here, mixing dirty jokes and earnest self reflection like no one else. This one has and executive producer credit for the legendary Q-Tip and individual tracks produced by Tip himself, Flying Lotus & Thundercat, JPEGMAFIA and Paul White, all of whom are wise enough to frame Danny Brown's one of a kind voice with just enough oddball elements and just enough head nodding funk. Includes "Change Up", "Theme Song", "Dirty Laundry", "3 Tearz" with Run The Jewels, "Belly Of The Beast" and the title track with Obongjayer, "Shine" with Blood Orange, "Savage Nomad", "Negro Spiritual" with JPEGMAFIA and "Combat". Soul steeped emotions bursts of fuzzed out atmospherics from Jamie Lidell – increasing uncategorizable as he evolves and a solid mix of neo soul inspired vocals and anything goes tripped out production! The kaleidoscopic sounds are colorful throughout, and we're clearly not alone in our admiration for Lidell's craft as he's attracted a guest list here that's as eclectic as the sounds – Beck, Fiest, Wilco's Pat Sansone, Nikka Costa and others contribute. Kassa Overall continues to be one of those artists who's not only impossible to peg, but who's also maybe a genre unto himself – a jazz drummer at the core, but one who's not afraid to throw in vocals, bits of funk, hip hop lyrics, and other styles as well! With each new record, Overall seems to really be evolving his style – and here, he delivers music that's even more personal than before at a lyrical level, while opening the door for a range of guests who help flesh out the sound – a lineup that includes Danny Brown, Anthony Ware, J Hoard, Lil B, and Nick Hakim – plus jazz musicians Vijay Iyer and Theo Croker. Titles include "The Lava Is Calm", "No It Ain't", "Make My Way Back", "Clock Ticking", "So Happy", "It's Animals", "Maybe We Can Stay", and "The Score Was Made". CD

Copacabana (Brazil), 1975. Good ... $3.99
The Zimbo Trio backs up Elizeth Cardoso on this groovy LP of bossa tracks recorded in a live setting. The set's got a few of those "pot pourri" selections, where the singer runs through a lot of different tunes in a medley – but the best cuts are the straight ones – like "Pra Voce", "Sabia", and "Samba Do Perdao". Plus, the record's got some even better tracks that are instrumentals by Zimbo – like "Ponteio" and "Sentinela". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric DolphyFire Waltz (Looking Ahead/The Quest) ... LP
Prestige, 1960/1961. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Late 70s 2-fer that combines 2 classic Dolphy sessions – Looking Ahead and The Quest. Looking Ahead is Legendary meeting between Dolphy and Ken McIntyre – and a record that's filled with sharp-edged new ideas! The pair play alto and flute, and they're backed by Walter Bishop, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor. The rhythm's perhaps more soulful than you'd expect – but the reed work is amazing, and the record's got a slyly sinister edge that still holds up extremely well. Titles include "Lautir", "Curtsy", "Dianna", and "Head Shakin". The Quest is a session that was originally recorded under the leadership of pianist Mal Waldron. Like a lot of Waldron's records from the time, this set shows an amazing desire for new forms and modern ideas, and the mix of players – Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Ron Carter, Joe Benjamin, and Charlie Persip – pulls the material in a number of different ways. Carter plays bowed cello, as he did on Dolphy's Out There session, and he gives the set a dark moody feel. Ervin's in his best modernist mode, and he ably trades lines with Dolphy and keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Waldron's writing and arranging is superb, and the tracks feature a lot of weird time structures and unusual modal patterns. Includes the tracks "Status Seeking", "Warm Canto", "Warp and Woof", and "Fire Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gil Scott-HeronRevolution Will Not Be Televised ... LP
Flying Dutchman, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $59.99
A set that wasn't initially conceived as a full album by Gil Scott-Heron – but one that's come to be an essential part of his catalog, thanks to the always-relevant title theme! The album's actually a classic collection of work from the early years of Gil Scott-Heron at the Flying Dutchman label – a time when he was recording some of his most impressively righteous material ever – a hip mix of protest poetry and sweet jazzy numbers – played with great keyboard accompaniment from frequent partner Brian Jackson on keyboards on nearly every track – plus help from Hubert Laws on flute and sax, and Bernard Purdie on drums. Nearly all the famous classics by Gil are here, and the titles include some of Gil's best jazz funk groovers, including "Pieces Of A Man", "Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Save The Children", "Sex Education Ghetto Style", "Whitey On The Moon", "Did You Hear What They Said", The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", and "No Knock". Linval ThompsonLinval Presents Space Invaders (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Greensleeves, 1981. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $29.99 44.98
A wicked little record, and one that lives up to its Space Invaders theme right from the start – thanks to a host of sweet electronic touches from Scientist, over a set of killer head-nodding dubs from Roots Radics! The group themselves are in totally top form – massive bass from Flabba Holt and drums from Style and Santa – topped with wicked guitar licks, and some sweet organ lines from Winston Wright – but it's clearly Scientist who's the star of the show, for the way he cooks the elements together and comes up with a sound that more than does justice to the extra-cool cover! Familiar elements are nicely abstracted, and juxtaposed with clever shifts in the studio – all to create massive dubs that include "Beam Down", "Red Shift", "Time Warp", "Cloning Process", "Pulsar", "Laser Attack", "Dematerialize", "Fission", "Super Nova Explosion", and "Quasar". 2LP version features bonus vocal tracks – by Wayne Wade, Wailing Souls, Sammy Dread, Linval Thompson, and Johnny Osbourne! Kudos (UK), 1998. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic set of space jazz from the glory days of the cosmic London scene of the late 90s – an early 3 track offering from Jimpster, future fusion carved by a quartet that features keyboards, saxes, bass, and drums! The spare approach has a real 70s feel – and Jimpster were one of the few groups of the time who could reference the glory days and actually deliver its sound – unlike a whole passel of knob-twiddlers who always talked about Herbie Hancock, but only just lost themselves in loops and samples! All 3 tracks on the set are great – and titles include the very appropriate "Phantom Phusion", plus "What Blows & Grows" and "Weft N Warp". CD

MCA, 1978. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stu really surprised us all with this one – working in full orchestral mode on a great set of dramatic themes that almost beats John Williams at his game! The work was scored for the great 70s TV sci fi flick Battlestar Galactica – and overall, most of the tunes are orchestral ones, done in the highly dramatic and action-charged style of work that was revived strongly on the Star Wars score. But the album also features a nice disco tune – "It's Love Love Love", sung by the Space Angels! Other titles include "Cassiopia & Starbuck", "Destruction Of Peace", "Fighter Launch", "Escape From The Ovion Mines", "Let's Go Home", and "Dash To The Elevator". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic work from The Dells – a group who never seemed to stop turning out greatness – even as they made a shift between different labels in the 70s! This set's got The Dells moving from Chess Records to Mercury – but there's still a strong indie vibe to the set – thanks to Chicago production, and some work at the All Platinum soul factory in New Jersey – a perfect choice, given the wonderful harmony soul that label was putting out at the time! The songwriting is wonderful, and the range of voices is completely sublime – that harmonic range that few other groups could do as well as The Dells. A few tracks are supposedly from the Fred Williamson movie No Way Back, but we've never seen it – and titles include "I'll Try Again", "Adventure", "You're The Greatest", "No Way Back", and "I'll Make You My Girl". ✨✧ DioHoly Diver ... LP
Warner, 1983. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the best heavy metal albums of all time! Ronnie James Dio had long been hailed for having some of the finest vocal chords in hard rock before this first Dio album arrived – having led the the obscure but beloved Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath in the 70s and earlier 80s – but it's Holy Diver that cements his legend. These days, it's kind of stunning how much he transcends metal cliche, as opposed to wallowing in it. Holy Diver has killer songs, Ronnie's unrivaled vocals and melodies, and the band focuses on crunching riffs instead of silly guitar solos and other elements that overwrought and badly dated so many other metal bands of the era. Includes "Stand Up & Shout", the eternal classics "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark", "Gypsy", "Caught In The Middle", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Straight Through The Heart", "Invisible" and "Shame On The Night". Spring/Warner, 1973. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the best of the blacksploitation scores of the early 70s – a masterpiece of music that we rate every bit as high as Shaft or Superfly – maybe even higher! The music here is incredible – a surprising funky turn for JJ Johnson, who most folks know for his straighter jazz work – and like Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and others who were surprising the world with their ability to score music for a full film during the early 70s, JJ really knocks it out of the park with this one – coming up with a batch of tunes that are a wonderful mix of sophisticated scoring, creative instrumentation, and some damn funky grooves! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". Titles include "Warp Factor II", "Love Star", "VM IV", and "It's Peaceful Out There" – plus the title track, which runs for all of side one! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ NinapintaDowntown Scene ... LP
Decca, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Downtown Scene is a plenty groovy one – thanks to heavy percussion from Ninapinta, and some great jazzy backings from Jimmy Wisner! The album's a blend of Latin Soul, Latin jazz, and other mod 60s styles – all wrapped together with Verve-like perfection, with supporting players who include Clark Terry on trumpet, Artie Kaplan on sax and flute, Willie Rodriguez on percussion, and Jimmy Wisner on piano and organ! The tunes are jaunty, jumpy, and plenty darn soulful – all instrumental, and with just the sort of hip sound we're always searching for on records like this, but never find done so well. Many tunes are covers, but they're really transformed – and titles include "Downtown", "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter", "1-2-3", "The In Crowd", "Help", "It Ain't Me Babe", and "Hang On Sloopy". ✨✧ RamonesLeave Home ... LP
Sire, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The Ramones really caught their classic recorded sound for the first time on Leave Home – the second of their three perfect late 70s milestones. As amazing as the debut is, its two-channel shrieking buzzsaw sound bowed nicely to the slightly more digestible, but just as cathartic roar of the follow ups. Totally essential! Titles include "California Sun", "Glad To See You Go", "Suzy Is A Headbanger", "Pinhead", "What's Your Game", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", and "I Remember You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ James BrownGettin' Down To It ... LP
King, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great little album by James Brown – and very different than his other work! He cut this one with the groovy Dee Felice Trio – a jazz-based combo that he recorded on their own for King, on another very rare, very excellent record. The band's in similar form here, although not necessarily as funky – and they do a great job of giving James' vocals a jazzy twist that they don't have on other albums – proving yet again that The Godfather can handle just about any sort of groove that he wants! Features a wonderfully groover version of "Sunny", which moves along very nicely – plus remakes of "There Was A Time" and "Cold Sweat", along with the tracks "Uncle" and "That's Life". ✨✧ Charles EarlandLeaving This Planet ... CD
Prestige, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". ✨✧ Temptations1990 ... LP
Gordy, 1973. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the last totally righteous albums by the Temptations – recorded at the end of their progressive run at Motown, and done with some really hard-hitting tunes and production from Norman Whitfield! Tracks step off with that beautiful mix of badass soul, heavy production, and soaring harmonies that always made the group so great during this period – and the tracks are some wonderful numbers that get way way past the hit-bound material of other albums. Paul Riser handled arrangements for the set, bringing in a few sweet touches that are very much appreciated on the mellower numbers – and titles include the extended mellow funky number "Zoom" – plus "1990", "I Need You", "You've Got My Soul On Fire", "Heavenly", and "Ain't No Justice". UndergroundPsychedelic Visions ... LP
Mercury/Wing, 1967. Very Good+ ... $39.99
A classic set of raw raunchy rock from the late 60s – originally issued as kind of a "cash in" record to grab some bucks on the rise of psych and garage – but a record that easily stands head to head with the best of its time! These guys drink heavy from the same brew as The Seeds, Count Five, Sonics, and other groups of the period – and work in a raw, garagey style that's hardly what you'd expect from Mercury Records Wing label subsidiary – especially given the sound of the guitars! Many cuts are covers, but they're performed with as much bold energy as the original tracks – and the set is awash in freak, fuzz, and echo! Titles include "Psychotic Reaction", "Psychedelic Dream", "Psychotic Vibrations", "Mind Jammer", "The Warper", and "Turn On Your Love Light". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has very light wear on the top seam, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ VariousAfro Rock Vol 1 ... LP
Kona (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the best compilations of Afro Funk titles we've ever stocked – one that goes way past the obvious titles and minor hits of the 70s! Ever tune on here is a gem – and the package even includes a few tunes that were either previously unreleased, or which were only ever issued on cassette, a popular form in 70s Africa. The "rock" in the title should be taken lightly – because the groove here is more funky, with drums, guitar, and horns coming together in glorious rhythmic cacophony! The whole set's got a great raw sound – and titles include "Mabala" by Yahoos, "Onukpa Shawarpo" by Bokoor Band, "Sweeper Soul" by Super Mambo 69, "Yuda" by Dackin Dackino, "Envy No Good" by Mercury Dance Band", and "Fever" by Jingo. ✨✧ Michael JacksonDangerous (longbox version) ... CD
Epic, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of those records that we remember dismissing at the time – but honestly, it really lives up to repeated listenings in later years! Sure, Michael Jackson's no longer working with Quincy Jones – and instead goes for Teddy Riley and some other (then) contemporary producers – but that all makes for a very solid 90s crossover vibe – perfect for radio play a the time, not to mention heavy video rotation too – and definitely still another jewel in the crown of the King of Pop! Titles include "Remember The Time", "Why You Wanna Trip On Me", "In The Closet", "Jam", "Dangerous", "Gone Too Soon", "Will You Be There", "Black Or White", "She Drives Me Wild", and "Can't Let Her Get Away".
