Lite StormWarning ... LP
Out-Sider (Spain), Late 60s. New Copy ... $18.99
The cover looks a bit serene, but the group is nicely weird and wild – able to play their guitars with a really full-on feel that makes us feel as if the 6 string and 12 string are both romping around with lots of wah-wah to keep things moving! The group dedicate the album to "our beloved divine "Mother" – but the sound here is more searing than spiritual, although we can definitely say that some of the guitar interplay has a quality that's hypnotic enough to maybe make you see the heavens! Titles include "Lady Lady", "Lema La Ya", "Stop Running Scared", "Nomad", "Then He Cried", "People Let It Go Now", "Continuation", and "Hanana". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Si Zentner/Jerry GoldsmithWarning Shot – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Liberty, 1966. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
We don't normally dig Si's work in most contexts – but this album's a great one, and feature some excellent crime and thriller jazz-based cuts composed by Jerry Goldsmith! The groove is more in the Quincy Jones mid 60s soundtrack mode than anything else – and there's plenty of breakaway solos on most of the tracks. Titles include "Warning Shot", "The Gasser", "Messed Up", "Back To The Seascape", "Miss Alice", "Mona Lisa", and "A Patch Of Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

AdevaAdeva – Ultimate (4CD set) ... CD
Cooltempo/Cherry Pop (UK), 1989. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
A huge album for Adeva – and maybe a huge album for house music really finding their way into the charts – as the singer has a fantastic way of blending old school vocals with more club-oriented rhythms – in a way that made Adeva especially popular overseas! The singer comes from the American south, and has deep roots in the church – with plenty of gospel training that really comes through in the way her vocals inflect and soar – set to grooves that are very much that late 80s British house-inspired style of the Coldcut generation. But Adeva's way more than just another singer working with beats – as the album's got a depth that really keeps on going, from the hit reworking of "Respect", through "Treat Me Right", "Promises", "Musical Freedom", "Warning", "I Don't Need You", "So Right", "Beautiful Love", and "In & Out Of My Life". This massive 4CD set is definitely the ultimate version – as it features an insane amount of bonus tracks – 46 more numbers, which has to be all of the many remixes of all the album's tracks that came out on overseas singles over the years. Comes in a slipcase with a nice booklet of notes – and more than four times the music that was on the original record! CD

Black SabbathBlack Sabbath ... LP
Warner, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $969.99
Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Titles include "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "NIB", "Wicked World", and "Warning". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK swirl label pressing with "Philips Record Product" in the "Stereo" copyright cover, including the lined Vertigo swirl inner sleeve! Cover is lightly bumped at the bottom right corner, looks great otherwise with minimal wear!)

J BlackfootU Turn ... LP
Edge, Early 80s. Sealed ... $4.99
Not as strong as some of Blackfoot's other solo work – a mix of styles that has his roots in the Memphis scene getting a bit of an 80s production touch, sometimes a bit too tinny to sound great, at others rolling into more comfortable territory with a warmer feel. Homer Banks wrote and produced most of the record – and titles include "Sunshine Lady", "U Turn", "Warning", "Bad Weather", and "Friendship". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clarence CarterReal ... LP
ABC, 1974. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Funny that they'd call this one "real", as it's probably the least rootsy of Clarence's albums from the early 70s. Not that that's a problem, though, because McKinley Jackson and Paul Riser handled the arrangements with a style that's very similar to some of Lamont Dozier's work for ABC – with plenty of good hooks in the songs, all strongly delivered with a full-on 70s soul sound, although with the undeniable southern touches that Clarence always brought to his work. Titles include "Real", "On Your Way Down", "Fine Love", "Shaky At Home", "Wake Up To Love", and "Warning". LP, Vinyl record album

Chicago Afrobeat ProjectOff The Grid EP ... CD
Chicago Afrobeat Project, 2008. Used ... $4.99
A short set, but one that's packed with loads of great work from this hip Chicago ensemble – an Afro Funk group with a style that's a bit different than some of the rest – not content to simply copy older 70s sounds, and always searching for unusual ways to serve up a groove! The rhythms are really great – quite fresh at points, with timings that go past the usual Fela mode – and the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, horns, and riffing guitar. Titles include the new tracks "Global Warning", "Ich Fumbus Grossen", and "Nobody Likes A Prima Donna" – plus "Media Man" in a radio edit, and in a "backseat bingo remix". CD

✨✧ Electric IndianKeem-O-Sabe ... LP
United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good ... $3.99
A goofy mix of groovy instrumental tracks with a weird "Apache"-esque instrumentation made up of some nicely processed guitars. The album's sort of funky in parts, with arrangements by Vince Montana that were recorded at Sigma Sound – and which have a late 60s Philly soul vibe to them. You may know the title cut, a goofy instrumental mini-hit, and other tracks include "Storm Warning", "Rain Dance", "What Does It Take To Win Your Love", and "Geronimo". Kind of Philly soul meets the Ventures! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roland HannaDestry Rides Again ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A jazz version of a Broadway show, but an especially great one too – and a set that's really quite fresh, given the less familiar nature of the Harold Rome compositions! Hanna's presentation of the material really gets past the roots of the tunes – and he uses the songs as great vehicles for melodic improvisation – working not only in a trio that features George Duvivier on bass and Roy Barnes on drums, but also sometimes with added guitar from Kenny Burrell, who really helps break this one past standard piano trio format! Hanna's bold but lyrical approach is a perfect fit for the tunes – and titles include "Hoop De Dingle", "I Say Hello", "Once Knew A Fella", "That Ring On The Finger", "I Know Your Kind", and "Fair Warning". MandrillMandrill ... CD
Polydor/Anagram, 1970. New Copy ... On November 13, 2020
Mandrill's first album of funky Latin jazz and soul – a landmark in crossover styles that still sounds remarkably fresh today! Unlike later records, which feature a tighter funk sound, this one has the band jamming out in a Latin-inflected mode that sounds like some of the best Chicano bands from LA during the early 70s. There's loads of funky flute, sweet organ riffing, and heavy drum and bass interplay. Includes the extended suite "Peace & Love", plus other funky goodies like "Symphonic Revolution", "Rollin' On", "Warning Blues", and "Mandrill". CD

✨✧ Max RomeoRevelation Time ... LP
Black World/17 North Parade, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 17.98
A really classic set from the great Max Romeo – a record that oozes with the soulful vocals he first forged back in the 60s, and sparks with some of the more righteous themes of his rasta roots work of the 70s! The production is perfect – laidback, unassuming, and very much a showcase for Max's role in the lead – singing over rhythms that seem as dictated by his charisma upfront, as they are part of the bedrock of the album! Although carved out in a 70s roots mode, most of the songs have themes that are still pretty darn meaningful all these many years later – with titles that include "Warning Warning", "A Quarter Pound Of I'cense", "Three Blind Mice", "Blood Of The Prophet (parts 1 & 2)", "Open The Iron Gate (parts 1 & 2)", and "Revelation Time". Harry South Big BandHarry South Songbook ... LP
1960s (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $28.99 29.99
An nice array of work from British pianist/bandleader/arranger Harry South – one of the most important large group talents of the late 50s, and an artist who helped shepherd British jazz through a range of stylistic periods – from straight big band of the postwar years, to mod moments in the 60s, to even some sound library-styled work near the end of this set! The range of musicians who worked with South on these tracks is incredible – almost a who's who of British jazz – as the set features work from some of the top talents of the scene at the time – either as leaders, or as sidemen on some of the dates. Titles include "Orient Line" by Tubby Hayes, "Liggin" by Joe Harriott, Slidin" by Ronnie Ross, "Minor Incident" by Dick Morrissey, and "Signing Out", "Raga (edit)", "Storm Warning", and "The Goblin" by Harry South himself. Talking HeadsMore Songs About Buildings & Food (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sire/Rhino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Early genius from the Talking Heads – a set that's got a much sparer sound than most of their later work, and a surprisingly groovy feel overall! The starkness of the group's debut is still very much in place – lots of tight interplay between bass and guitar – but the rhythms are also strongly pronounced too, and often get a bit funky at times – in ways that almost outdo most of the artier punk and funk that was to come in the next few years of the New York scene! Brian Eno produced the album with the group, and his sonic sensibilities really add a lot to the record – in ways that are much more subtle than his own 70s albums, but still a very big part of the set. Titles include "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel", "With Your Love", "The Good Thing", "Warning Sign", "The Girls Want To Be With The Girls", "Found A Job", "Artists Only", "I'm Not In Love", "Take Me To The River", "Stay Hungry", and "The Big Country". Blue Gene Tyranny & Peter GordonTrust In Rock ... CD
Unseen Worlds, 1976. New Copy 2CDs ... $12.99 14.99
An early live performance by two of the more compelling modern composers of the 70s – both artists working here in mode that fuses their larger ideas onto the idiom of a rock band – but all with a vibe that resonates strongly with their later releases on the Lovely Music label! The first half of the set was composed by Blue Gene Tyranny, the second by Peter Gordon – but the group here is the same throughout, recorded at a live concert in Berkley, providing a great precursor to the later, better-known careers of both composers. There are vocals from Patrice Magnet on some tracks (including a few with lyrics by Kathy Acker), but the songs are often long, and have qualities that reflect the bigger concept works of both Gordon and Tyranny. Musicians include Peter Gordon on saxes and mixing, Tyranny on piano, Karl Young on saxes and woodwinds, Paul Dresher on guitars, and Gene Reffkin on percussion – and there's also some live mixing taking place during the entire performance, creating more complications in the sound. Titles include "Without Warning", "On The Other Hand", "Leading A Double Life", "Machomusic", "God's A Man", "When Baby Gets Wet", and "Intervallic Expansion". CD

Bad Boy, 1995. Very Good 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Biggie's masterpiece – remastered! There's very little we could possibly say about this east coast landmark that isn't already etched in stone in the annals of hip hop history. Biggie's a master storyteller, whether he's spinning tales of violent street nihilism, his skills beneath the sheets, or blistering sadness and regret. This thing sounds as great in the new millenium as it did at the end of the previous one. All the classics: "Things Done Changed", "Gimme The Loot", "Machine Gun Funk", "Ready To Die", "Warning", "Ready To Die", "Juicy", "Big Poppa", "Respect", "Friend Of Mine", and the Premier-produced "Unbelievable". This remasted re-release of the album includes two bonus tracks – the legendary, oft-bitten track "Who Shot Ya" and "Just Playing (Dreams)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jeri SouthernJeri Southern Meets Johnny Smith ... CD
Roulette/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jeri Southern can be a hell of a jazz singer when she wants – and that was definitely the case on this gem of a record – a laidback small combo setting with excellent guitar accompaniment from Johnny Smith! Smith's trademark tones really color the record in a great way – enriching the sound and offsetting some of the more understated vocals from Jeri – but in a way that also lets us really hear her phrasing, too. The setting is spare and simple – and the song choice is great, too – with shifts between standards and a few more obscure numbers that show Jeri working at a deeper range than we know from other records. Titles include "Robins & Roses", "Without A Warning", "Where Or When", "Two Sleepy People", "Isn't It Romantic", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". CD

Amazing work by a group that you've probably never heard of! The Ambassadors are an incredible Philly soul harmony group – of the sort that never made it out of the city in the pre-Philly International years, but who had a polish and quality that was every bit as great as bigger-name acts from Chicago or New York. The harmonies on the record are mindblowing – the kind of raw and sweet at the same time that was the Philly calling card on the group soul scene – and arrangements are by a young Bobby Martin, with help from Philly studio legends like Vince Montana, Norman Harris, Leon Huff, and Bobby Eli. Tracks include "I Really Love You", "I Dig You Baby", "AWOL", "Storm Warning", and "If I'm All You Got". 3 bonus cuts, too! CD

✨✧ Luciano MicheliniMorte Sospetta Di Una Minorenne ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet electric score from Luicano Michelini – and one that we might almost point to as an early entry in the keyboard sound of Italian horror films! The style's not as proggy or rockish as Goblin – and Luciano borrows maybe a bit of funk from some of the cop/crime scene – yet the main focus is on the electric instrumentation, with lots of basslines and keyboard flights to really set the mood, often with a spare style that's much more 80s than you'd guess from the date! Some moments almost evoke a spooky church organ – but played faster, on 70s keyboards, in a way that really abstracts the horror film standard. Titles include "Death Warning", "Gettin Closer", "Blind Murder", "Too Young To Die", and "Killer Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends!
