WarlockWarlock ... LP
Music Merchant/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 27.99
One of the stranger chapters of the Holland-Dozier-Holland story of the early 70s – and one of the coolest, too! Warlock are a jazzy rock combo with plenty of soul – a bit like a twisted version of Blood Sweat & Tears, but with all the sinister energy you'd guess from the image on the cover! Most of the numbers have a nasty scratchy sort of vocal – almost Alice Cooper-ish, in keeping with the Warlock name of the group – but a few others get a bit more soulful and funky, belying the HDH connection of the group – sometimes even showing a righteous jazzy vibe, as kind of an odd echo of the Detroit Tribe Records scene. The best tracks have some jazzy phrasing in the mix, and let the guitars go off to the side – and titles include "Love Girl", "You've Been My Rock", "So Can Woman", "Thrills Of Love", and the 14 minute jammer "As You Die/Music Box", which almost has a Colosseum build to it! Krown RulersPaper Chase ... CD
Warlock/Traffic, 1988. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A great solo set from the Krown Rulers – a New Jersey crew, but one who worked often with Philly's Tuff Crew – as evidenced by the album's production help from Dave of that group! The cover art might look a bit gimmicky, but the set's nice and raw – bursting with beats and stark samples, and touched with a bit of those higher ideals that Jersey MCs were starting to bring to their music – a legacy that was perhaps never fully realized in the end, but which made that scene such a key link between New York and Philly, and maybe more underground too. Titles include "Paper Chase", "32nd St Down (The Eastside Story)", "Confetti Emcees", "Call Me The Sire", "Non Stop Hip Hop", "B Boy Document", "That's Not Where It's At", and "Super Dope Remix #2 (Kick The Ball)". Royal HouseCan You Party? (expanded 2 CD set) ... CD
Idlers/Warlock, Late 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Great work from one of our favorite house projects of the late 80s – Todd Terry's Royal House, a name that was associated with some great singles at the time! Terry's got a simple but effective way of laying out the beats – really splashing the drums, but getting past the harder, tinnier snare of a lot of the Chicago house of the decade. Instead, there's a soulfully flowing approach to the work that borrows nicely from the late Paradise sound, and which has a great way of dropping in small sonic elements that dance along beautifully in the grooves! Most tracks are undisputed mix classics from the early days of acid – and titles include "Can You Party", "Yeah Buddy", "Key The Pulse", "A Better Way", "The Chase", and "Party People". Expanded 2CD version also features 12 extra mixes – including "Can You Party (club)", "The Chase (extended)", "Yeah Buddy (extended)", "Get Funky (Long club adub)", "Key The Pulse (club rub dub rub)", "The Texican" by Orange Lemon, and "I Love You" by Drum & Bass. Tuff CrewBack To Wreck Shop ... CD
Warlock, 1989. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The Tuff Crew burst out of the Philly scene with this overlooked gem from the end of the 80s – an album that may not be top of the history books, but which still has all the raw creative energy of those great indie years before the first big assault on hip hop by the major labels! The production is pretty spare – maybe even more like NYC productions from a few years before – which might have led to the album's lack of respect at the time, but which sounds pretty darn great all these many years later! These guys maybe also aren't as careful with their politics or a political style – but that's also one of the things that makes the album interesting too – a reminder of how unbridled hip hop production could be in the early days. Titles include "Wreck Shop", "Going The Distance", "Danger Zone Assault", "Behold The Detonator", "Soul Food", and "My Parta Town". CD

✨✧ Unique & DashanBlack To The Future (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warlock/Traffic, 1989. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Righteous sounds from this overlooked duo – a record that was one of the first in the Blackwatch movement, and which also features guest work from Professor X too! There's a spirit to the lyrics that prefaces some of the more conscious work to come in the early 90s – and titles include "Protected By The Red Black & Green", "Three The Hardway", "Brutalization", "House Is Taking Over", "Versatility", "Poet In His Own Time", and "Lumumba". Includes four bonus tracks – "House Is Taking Over (12" rare groove mix)", "House Is Taking Over (12" city beat mix)", "House Is Taking Over (12" bassapella)", and "Lumumba (orig 12" mix)". CD

Paul Brett's SagePaul Brett Sage ... LP
Pye/Long Hair (France), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Paul Brett's Sage may be dripping away in an hourglass on the cover, but the group stand on very firm foundation with this debut – definitely one of the more unique records of their generation on the UK scene, and a set that doesn't come with any easy reference point – even given the work of leader Paul Sage in a bunch of key prog acts in years before! There's a sensitivity here that's surprising – both in the way that Brett handles vocals on some of the tracks, and in the album's use of flute and saxes from Nicky Higginbottom – an element that's stronger here than you might expect – but maybe more in the way that Harold McNair would add the right woodwind flourishes to a Donovan song. There's some larger arrangements from David Palmer on the set – but most of the instrumentation is from the core quartet, who keep things nice and lean on some well-focused tunes that include "Warlock", "The Painter", "3D Mona Lisa", "Little Aztec Prince", "Reason For Asking", "Trophies Of War", and "Mediterranean Lazy Heat Wave".
