WarGood Good Feelin/Galaxy ... 12-inch
MCA, 1979. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A surprising killer by War! "Good Good Feelin" is from the group's later years, but the track's got a snapping hard percussive edge that they hardly even had in their earlier recordings! There's a wonderful disco breaking bass and drum bit on the intro – really going to town before the vocals come in. "Galaxy" is a later funky classic by the group – strutting out with some sweet funky riffing, ensemble vocals, and a powerful groove that's always been a dancefloor pleaser! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Label on Side 1 has a bit of pen.)

WarMusic Band 2 ... LP
MCA, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A great follow-up to War's first Music Band album – and proof that the group was still plenty darn funky at the end of the 70s! Although different from their original Chicano funk groove, the style here is still totally great – long, drawn-out funk that's filled with plenty of sharp edges, stepping basslines, sweet keyboards, and riffing guitars – sometimes a bit warmer than before, but in a way that's still plenty darn soulful. There's almost a bit more of an instrumental focus here than before – especially on the album's 13 minute remake of "The World Is A Ghetto". Other tracks include "Don't Take It Away", "I'll Take Care Of You", "Night People", and "The Music Band 2". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the embossed cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch and light wear at the opening.)

WarPlatinum Jazz ... LP
Blue Note, 1977. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
Sweet jazzy work from War – a record that has them stretching things out a bit from before, and finding new ways to groove for the second half of the 70s! All the core elements are still firmly in place – that sublime blend of jazz, soul, funk, and Latin elements – but there's a slight shift in the presentation, with maybe just a touch more of the jazz promised in the title – which might have to do with the album's initial placement as a Blue Note Records title! The first half of the record features all new material, showcasing this slight shift in the group's sound – and a mode that's nicely free of any hits – and the second half of the set brings back some key jazzy tracks from earlier records, which fit perfectly into place. Titles include "War Is Coming", "I Got You", "LA Sunshine", "Platinum Jazz", "Slowly We Walk Together", "River Niger", "H2Overture", "City Country City", "Four Cornered Room", and "Deliver The Word". WarWorld Is A Ghetto ... CD
United Artists/Avenue, 1972. Used ... $9.99
A monster from start to finish – not only the greatest album from War, but maybe one of the greatest mainstream funk albums of all time! The set's got a really unique groove – one that so many others tried to copy, but which was forged here first – in a wicked LA blend of Chicano funk, heavy organ lines, and soulful singing that sews the whole thing together perfectly. Just about every cut is upbeat and funky – rolling along at that low-rider pace that was War's lasting contribution to funk music – and the album features the huge hits "World Is A Ghetto" and "Cisco Kid", two of the brightest spots on radio funk from the 70s – plus classics like "Four Cornered Room", "City Country City", "Where Was You At", and "Beetles In The Bog". War delivers the word, and a whole lot more as well – that amazing blend of styles that always made the group way more than just the sum of its parts! The classic groove is very firmly in place here – a great style that mixes jazz funk with a freer jamming style borrowed from Latin music – served up on a batch of long tracks that really let the band open up and groove! Vocals are part of the plan, but the instrumentation often gets as much time in the spotlight as well – and the set includes the classic jammer "Me & Baby Brother", plus "H2 Overture", "Blisters", "Southern Part Of Texas", "In Your Eyes", and "Gypsy Man". A sweet snapping groove from War – a set that has the group picking up a bit more boogie in their bounce than before, but at a level that helps keep their funk fresh for a whole new generation! The album's a heck of a lot warmer and more live than most of their contemporaries – and while there's a bit less of the freer moments of their youth, there's still plenty of jazzy touches over the top – and that wonderful trademark blend of Latin elements, jazzy riffing, and captivating chorus vocals! Basslines take on a bit more role than before – but in a good way – and titles include "You Got The Power", "The Jungle", "Just Because", "Outlaw", "I'm About Somebody", and "Cinco De Mayo". ✨✧ War & Eric BurdonBlack Man's Burdon ... LP
Far Out/MGM, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great pairing of talents – the post-Animals Eric Burdon on vocals, and early grooves from Cali funk legends War – coming together here in a blend that still holds up beautifully after all these years! Burdon was already getting pretty soulful on the last few Animals albums on MGM – and he really advances that style here when working with War's great grooves – some of the grittiest, nastiest, most stretched out work of their career – especially on some of the album's nicely long tracks. There's some nice Latin currents to the music at times, and the group vocalize alongside Burdon at times – and titles include a long version of "Paint It Black", plus "Bare Back Ride", "Sun/Moon", "Pretty Colors", "Gun", "Nuts Seeds & Life", "They Can't Take Away Our Music", and "Spirit". Holy Modal RoundersIndian War Whoop ... CD
ESP/Don Giovanni, 1967. New Copy ... $10.99
Some of the most tripped-out music ever from The Holy Modal Rounders – and that's saying a lot, given the nature of the group! This unique early album on ESP features two side-long tracks – both of which are mini-suites of sort, and filled with odd sounds, weird themes, and a strange mixture of hippie instrumentation and sci-fi experimentation! The group for the record is a quartet – with the core combo of Peter Stampfel on violin and vocals and Steve Weber on guitar, augmented by playwright Sam Shephard on drums and Lee Crabtree on piano and organ – plus extra vocals from the trio of Antonia, Barbara, & Wendy. The music is in the best free-thinking style of other rock on the ESP label in the 60s – and titles include "Jimmy & Crash Survey The Universe" and "The Second-Hand Watch". CD

Edwin StarrWar & Peace (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Gordy/Anagram, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99 On December 3, 2021
A real breakout album for Edwin Starr – and the kind of full-on set that really helped give his music a bold new focus! Starr had already scored nicely on some playful tracks from the Motor City scene of the late 60s – but here, he emerges as a singer with a lot more depth than before – not only on the righteous tunes, like the classic title track – but also on some of the warmer ones too, which showcase a new adult style of singing we might not have expected a few years before! Unlike other Motown efforts of this level, there doesn't seem to be any core arranger and producer – which means that Edwin himself did an even greater job of pulling the whole thing together – a great run of tracks that includes the classic "War (What Is It Good For)", a killer version of "California Soul", one of the best Motown-penned tracks from the time – and the tracks "Time", "I Just Wanted To Cry", "All Around The World", "At Last I Found A Love", "I Can't Replace My Old Love", and "She Should Have Been Home". VariousCold War On The Rocks – Disco & Electronic Music From Finland 1980 to 1991 ... CD
Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $16.99
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. VariousStop The War – Vietnam Through The Eyes Of Black America 1965 to 1974 ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
The Vietnam war was tough on most folks in the US – but it's no secret that it was especially tough on black Americans – who were often given little choice and little chance to get out of the callup to the military action – which left a huge impression on their community for years to come! This package documents the affect of Vietnam in soul music – in ways that are both direct and more subtle, as the package blends together a number of tracks that you likely don't know at all, and others that you might have missed as being critical of the war – as there's more subtle messaging going on, a lesson that was learned during the Civil Rights era, when a mellower lyric might get more mainstream circulation – as a call to action that a change was going to come. The quality of cuts here is wonderful – as well-selected as some of the Ace/Kent collections of rare soul music on small labels – and there's definitely a few here that we're hearing for the first time, alongside other numbers that really sound great in the setting. Titles include "Fighting For My Baby" by Donald Jenkins, "Lonely Soldier" by William Bell, "Letter To A Buddie" by Joe Medwick, "I Want To Come Home For Christmas" by Marvin Gaye, "My Ship Is Coming In Tomorrow" by The Pace Setters, "Johnny" by King Hannibal, "Going On Strike" by The Emotions, "Uncle Sam" by Jimmy Hughes, "My Soldier Boy Is Coming Home" by The Shirelles, "Glad To Be Home" by Charles Smith & Jeff Cooper, "The War Is Over My Brother" by The Sensational Saints, "Home To Stay" by RB Greaves, "Stop The War" by The Impressions, "Wish You Were Here With Me" by The Fawns, "VC Blues" by Allen Orange, "Promise That You'll Wait" by Michael Lizzmore, "Men Are Getting Scarce" by Chairmen Of The Board, and "Leave Him Alone" by Stu Gardner. ✨✧ Billy Paul360 Degrees Of Billy Paul/War Of The Gods (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two ultra-hip albums from Billy Paul – back to back in a single set! First up is 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a record that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! Gamble & Huff are at the helm, and arrangements at Sigma Sound are by Lenny Pakula, Norman Harris, and Bobby Martin – but throughout the whole thing, it's Billy's delivery that really sends the record over the top – the new sense of maturity he brings to the huge hit "Me & Mrs Jones", the funky vibe of "Am I Black Enough For You", and the wealth of great work on tracks that include "I'm Gonna Make It This Time", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Brown Baby", and "Let's Stay Together". A masterpiece of sophisticated soul that not only had Billy crossing over big, but which opened whole new doors in the market for black male singers! War Of The Gods is a stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

A really cool collection, and one that covers a lot more territory than just the Berlin Wall – as the set features a mix of music in many styles, all dealing with some of the more anxiety-producing moments of the Cold War era! The range of sounds is wonderful – as rock mixes with country, jazz, and R&B – interspersed occasionally with snippets from radio broadcasts or news reports – capturing a vivid picture of the world as the wall was going up in the early 60s! Bear Family really did a great job with this one – and presents the whole thing with their usual thoroughness and panache – with a set list of 34 tracks that include "Berlin Top Ten" by Dickie Goodman, "The Locked God Outside The Iron Curtain" by Little Jimmy Dickens, "I'm No Communist" by Lulu Belle & Scotty, "Russian Roulette" by Lester Lanin, "Fallout Shelter" by Peter Scott Peters, "Watch World War III On Pay TV" by The Crown City Four, "Koko Mamey" by Moe Koffman, "Russian Roulette" by The Zanies, "West Of The Wall" by Toni Fisher, "Dance Legless Russian" by The Moontrekkers, "Rocket Racket" by Dickie Harrell, "Russia Russia Lay That Missile Down" by Prescott Reed, "Rockin Behind The Iron Curtain" by Bobby Marchan, and "Mr Kruschev" by Bo Diddley. Nascente (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavy funk from the Soviet scene – rare grooves from the dark side of the Iron Curtain – mostly recorded during the 70s in a wave of surprisingly overlooked sounds! There's some great work here from Poland, The Czech Republic, and Hungary – all scenes that really did a great job of picking up the best electric influences of the Western scene of the time, and turning them towards their own ends in creative, regional ways! The artist and song names are filled with consonants, and virtually unpronounceable to those not in the know – but the music's got a universal appeal that's mighty nice – heavy bits of funk, soul, jazz, and fusion that bubble strongly, and really percolate some massive grooves. And even though we know some of this music from other reissues, there's plenty here we've never heard before – especially given that the collection has a strong focus on soul and club-based modes – which is a change from some of the jazzier compilations of this nature. Titles include "Gorila" by Misa Blam, "Sluchaj Rytmu" by Breakout, "Powrot" by Andrzej Dabrowski, "Definitivni Konec" by The Rebels, "Ko Vjecnu Tugu Nosi" by Pro Arte, "Nehez Fiuk" by Neoton, "Disco King" by Centrum, "Agent 008" by Zesp, and "Za Gora Gor" by Grazyna Lobaszewska & Ergo Band. The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

Funky rocking sounds from this hip Spanish group – with a bit of a tribal sound that's pretty sweet! The bass is pretty thundering, the drums are strong, and there's some cool piano and flute in the mix that give the cuts a bit of a Latin flourish. Most cuts have vocals, kind of in a rock-sounding mode – but the instrumentation is mostly funky all the way, and the album fits in well next to early 70s records by groups like War or some of their LA cronies. Titles include "The Horse", "Keep On Moving", "You Know", "Casanova", "Mr Money", and "Children". LP, Vinyl record album

Colemine, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Beautifully heavy sounds from Black Market Brass – a group who started out with more of a global funk approach, but who emerge here with the intensity of some lost funky soundtrack – all with the sort of edge you might expect from the cover! The style here is really revolutionary – unlike anything else we've ever heard from a group with "brass" in their name – in part because the group has some very cool distortion on the keyboards and guitar, which gives those electric elements a very sinister sound next to the straight ahead fire of the horns – served up with really hard-driving rhythms throughout, in a way that seems to pull together older traditions of Afro Funk, Nola Brass, and even some of the southern college bands – but all with a very 21st Century vision. Titles include "So Who (parts 1 & 2)", "Into The Thick", "War Room", "Cheat & Start A Fight", "Undying Thirst", and "NBT". CD

✨✧ Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 18.98
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

Barbara BrownGot To Be Somebody – The XL Sessions – 60s Memphis Gold ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A great full length collection of work by Memphis singer Barbara Brown – a vocalist who appeared both as a solo act, and with her sisters – on a variety of singles for labels like Cadet, Atlantic, Tower, and MGM in the late 60s and early 70s! Barbara's got a deep, rich voice that's clearly schooled in gospel, but pointed towards more secular ends – an approach that's very much in keeping with the best late 60s wave of soul from Atlantic Records, and which is carried off here with a sharpness and precision that's simply mindblowing! Why Brown never scored bigger is a real mystery to us, because these tunes come off like the cream of the crop of southern soul at the end of the 60s – not just obscurities for obscurity sake, but some of the highest level of soul a female soul singer could hope for at the time! Titles include "Can't Find No Happiness", "Plenty Of Room", "A Great Big Thing", "Things Have Gone To Pieces", "Man Around The House", "Play Thing", "I'm Gonna Start A War", "I Don't Want To Have To Wait", "It Hurts Me So Much", "Got To Be Somebody", "There's A Look On Your Face", and "If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl". Blessed/Acid Jazz (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 23.98
A rare bit of gospel from the Louisville scene at the start of the 80s – but a set that's also got plenty of secular soul appeal too – thanks in part to the righteous message in Lamont's lyrics, which would fit with some of the deeper sounds of 70s soul – and thanks also to the wicked instrumentation, which has this great indie vibe, again with plenty of wonderful 70s soul elements! The group's got bits of organ, chromatic guitar, and some gentle basslines that really guide the way – but it's definitely the lead vocals of Lamont Butler that make the whole thing come together – a singer with a sound that's every bit as hip as his look on the cover, and a really universal way of making a message. US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. New Copy 3CD ... $12.99 24.98
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Mercury/BGO (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Massive music in a wonderful package – three funky classics from The Gap Band! First up is the group's self-titled album from 1979 – the start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. There's also a few mellower cuts too – which really sound great, and give the record the same sort of balance you might hear on work by Heaven & Earth at the time. War's Lonnie Simmons produced – and held the cash bag all the way to the bank! Titles include "I'm In Love", "Got To Get Away", "Messin With My Mind", "Shake", "Baby Baba Boogie", "Open Your Mind Wide", and "I Can Sing". Gap Band II features mean, lean grooves from The Gap Band – a legendary batch of mainstream funk from the end of the 70s – and a record that really has the trio working at the top of their game! There's a wonderful balance here between funky numbers and mellow ones – the latter of which really help pace the record nicely, giving it a depth that takes the group way beyond the cliches of some of their contemporaries, and firmly establishing the Gap Band as one to watch for the 80s! Titles include the massive "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up & Dance" – with its classic "Oops Upside Your Head" refrain – plus "Who Do You Call", "No Hiding Place", "Steppin Out", "You Are My High", and "Party Lights". Gap Band III is sagreat one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! Tunes like "Burn Rubber On Me (When You Want To Hurt Me)" and "Humpin" packed 80s dance floors for good reason, and put the band in steady rotation, while numbers like "Yearning For Your Love" showed the band could drop the tempo, stretch out a bit, and deliver the mighty mellow. This one's certainly at the top of the heap of 80s groovers, as far as we're concerned – a record that really took the Gap Band over the top! Other tracks include "Nothin' Comes To The Sleepers", "Are You Living", "The Way", "Gash Gash Gash" and more. CD

There's a developed depth to the record that goes way beyond just riffing on a groove – a richness that almost puts some of the best cuts at the level of longer CTI keyboard jazz. Mississippi, 1930/1931. New Copy ... $13.99
Beautifully folksy work from pre-war Greece – a series of 78s from Constantinos Bezos, not only a musician, but also a journalist and actor too – and reportedly one with a very political wit! That wit comes through in the title of the collection – but might not in the lyrics to all the tunes, unless you understand Greek – but that's more than OK, because the guitar work is equally wonderful – often on this steel-stringed version that has a very resonant quality, and which rings out in these cyclical ways that are really beautiful – almost prefacing a Robbie Basho sort of style, and played in ways that perhaps are linked to other Greek stringed instruments. The package features a very hefty booklet of notes – and the translations of the song titles get at the spirit of the record – and include "A School Was Burned", "Yannis The Hash Smoker", "I Became Thin", "You Were Barefoot", and "The Jail's A Fine School". Not Now (UK), 1962/1965. Used 2 CDs ... $8.99
Features two classic albums on 2 CDs – Krupa & Rich is a wonderful meeting of two of the biggest 50s talents on the drums – and a session that's great not only for the expected firey percussion, but also for the horn work by other members on the set! Given the "drum battle" style of the record, the tracks are long and very open – done in a studio mode that recalls some of the Krupa/Rich meetings at JATP, and like the JATP sides, featuring plenty of space for players to take longer solos. Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, Flip Phillips, and Roy Eldridge get in some nice licks on the set – and other players include Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, and Ray Brown. Titles include "Gene's Blues", "Bernie's Tune", "Buddy's Blues", and "I Never Knew". Burnin' Beat is a drum-heavy spectacular that returns Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich to their big band roots – thanks to some hard-swinging arrangements from George Williams! The tracks are a bit shorter and done with a larger group than on some of the other Rich or Krupa sides for Verve – but there actually seems to be even more drum pyrotechnics here, possibly because the players' efforts are compressed into such a tight space! Production is a bit odd – with the drums so high in the mix that they sometimes come across with more treble than bass – but that really highlights some of the most inventive moments on the top of the kit as well. Titles include "Duet", "Perdido", "Evolution", "Night Train", and "Hawaiian War Chant". CD

Marc Levin is maybe best known for one famous album of avant jazz recorded for the Savoy label in the 60s – but he's equally stunning here in a mid 70s set that got little circulation at the time, but which is a key part of Levin's under-recorded legacy as a leader! The approach is very open and creative, but balanced with that mixture of structure and freedom that Levin's other album shares – almost 60s "new thing" modes, expressed during the 70s loft generation – on long tracks that feature some really stunning shifts in sounds, styles, and instrumental elements! Levin blows cornet, flugelhorn, flute, mellophone, and melodica – and the group also features Seppo Paakkunanine on baritone, flute, and viola – plus Reino Laine on drums, Teppo Auta Aho on bass, and Carita Holmstrom on voice – a singer who makes some especially strong contributions to the record, in a way that maybe echoes some of the Sheila Jordan/Roswell Rudd collaborations. The tunes are fantastic, every bit as striking as their titles – which include "Nylon Coverin Body Smotherin", "Brothers In War", "Letter To President Nixon Re The Chile Affair", and "Student Days New York 1965". ECM (Germany), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A great statement as a leader from drummer Paul Motian – a player that none would have expected to be hitting this territory in the decade before – the start of a great run of records that continued his break from more familiar rhythmic territory! The record's got a very strong ECM vibe, but also maybe a bit more bite, too – as the bass work of Charlie Haden is balanced by sharper sounds from Carlos Ward on alto sax – who really gets plenty of space to dominate the proceedings, with this open soulfulness that really adds a lot to the record. The set's also got twin guitars from Paul Metzke and Sam Brown, which makes for a great approach – especially as Brown moves between acoustic and electric. Titles include a beautiful reading of Haden's "Song For Che" – plus "Victoria", "Tuesday Ends Saturday", "War Orphans", and "Sod House". CD

OrgoneKillion Floor ... CD
Ubiquity, 2007. Used ... $9.99
A monstrous debut from one of the heaviest acts we've heard in years – LA's Orgone, easily one of the most up-and-coming funky combos around! Although Orgone share a bit with some of the leaner deep funk groups who've cropped up in the past decade or so, they've also got a sound that's a bit more advanced overall – sort of that second-generation approach to funk that hit the scene by the mid 70s, as some of the bigger funk acts like Black Heat or War moved out of the indie scene and really started to hit a wider audience! That doesn't mean that Orgone's commercial at all – because they've got a sound that's still as sharp-edged as any smaller group – but with a lineup that's quite large, they're able to encompass a very wide range of soulful styles – gritty 45 riffing, slinky Chicano-styled grooves, Afro Funk, tighter soul tracks, and lots lots more – all carried off with perfection throughout. The album feels like some lost masterpiece on Fantasy, or possibly some overlooked early 70s major label funk set on WEA or United Artists – and titles include "Who Knows Who", "I Get Lifted", "Funky Nassau", "Lone Ranger", "Prism Break", "Crabby Ali", "Duck & Cover", "Dialed Up", "Said & Done", "Hambone", "It's What You Do", "Do Your Thing", and "Sophisticated Honky". A tremendously groovy album from Dave Pell – an arranger best known for his 50s jazz sides, but who's working here with a very hip group of singers! The album's got a cool slinky style that's totally great – slightly funky at the bottom, with traces of Sunshine Pop in the overall phrasing of the tunes – a great blend between easy vocal and groovy pop styles of the 60s, and a real standout from the time! The choice of tracks is especially great – and the set includes incredible remakes of "Oh Calcutta", "Keem-O-Sabe", and "Mah Na Mah Na" – all very different than the originals, but all plenty darn wonderful. Other tracks include "Sweet Caroline", "Get Together", "Laughing", "Sugar Sugar", "Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town", and "Thank God The War Is Over". LP, Vinyl record album

A strangely beautiful little record – the standout career effort from tenorist Jim Pepper – a Native American player who draws heavily here on his heritage! Although Pepper plays sax on most numbers, he also sings a fair bit too – in kind of a raspy style that alternates from slightly soulful to somewhat chanting – all in a uniquely haunting way that's unlike anything else we can think of! There's a definite jazz core to the record – guitar from Larry Coryell, piano from Tom Grant, and drums from Billy Cobham and Spider Rice – but the sound is often far from standard, given the vocals and Native American influences. Titles include the sublime "Witchitai-To" – Pepper's lasting legacy in music – plus "Newlyweds Song", "Nommie Nommie", "Senecas", "Yon A Ho", "Slow War Dance", and "Drums". CD

There's also a slight touch of the Sun Records history here – guitar from Billy Lee Riley on one cut, and a few tunes that aren't Prine's own – but the whole thing still comes together at a level that's right up there with his best 70s classics. The album was recorded in 1982 – in marathon New York sessions that yielded more than one album's worth of material – but of all of them, this is probably the best, and the one with some of the strongest playing – a really unified album that should have gotten a lot more circulation at the time, instead of a mostly underground release on Saturn Records. The set kicks off with the fantastic "Nuclear War", a wonderful little groover – and a track that's probably as strong a number in the Arkestra's book as "Space Is The Place" – but with a shift in righteous message from the 70s to the 80s. The album then shifts into 2 mellower numbers with weird spacey overtones – "Retrospect" and "Makeup" – before moving into side two, and the drawn-out edgey "Fireside Chat With Lucifer". The amazing second album from this ultra-cool group – a set that's even weirder and wilder than their debut! The trio are maybe one of the few who really live up to the farthest expectations of the psych generation – as they're really open to let their minds fly in their choice of lyrics, instrumentation, and overall presentation of the record – which hardly seems the sort to yield any sort of singles at all, even though a few of the tunes are downright catchy! Instead, the whole thing's put forth as a dark statement on late 60s society – with a sound that's as heavy as the subject matter, and not afraid to really pus all the freak and fuzz as far as it can go! Quite surprising, even for the Reprise label – and tracks include "Queen Nymphet", "Tracy Had a Hard Day Sunday", "In the Arena", "Smell of Incense", "Suppose They Gave A War & No One Comes", "Overture Wcpaeb (part 2)", and "Carte Blanche" – which supposedly they were given in recording the album! Universal, 2000s. New Copy 5CD ... $45.99 49.99
Way more than just a box set of the key albums from the all-too-short career of Amy Winehouse – as this massive package also features a wealth of rarities and live tracks – some making their CD debut in this limited collection! The set leads off with Frank – the stunning debut from UK soul singer Amy Winehouse – a vocalist with a sound that's instantly captivating, and which will be with us for years! Amy's clearly cut her chops in jazz, but also has a laidback and soulful personality – easily shifting between modes for the right mood of each song, without any of the pretensions that would ruin an album like this. The backings have a proud stepping feel that fits well with tunes like "In My Bed", "What Is It About Men", "F*ck Me Pumps", and "You Sent Me Flying" – really keeping Amy's spirit fresh throughout the whole set! Next is Back to Black – an incredible album from Amy Winehouse – even way better than her fantastic debut! Although a contemporary soul album, this one's steeped in tradition – soul styles that run the gamut from Detroit down to Kingston, and which are carried off here with a rougher, sharper-edged sound than before! The instrumentation on here is really mindblowing – almost at a Motown level, with isolated instruments really crackling out from the fuller backings – all set to rhythms that snap and bounce, and are almost a bit funky at times. Credit is definitely due to producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi – but Amy's vocals are really tremendous too – classic, but really personal and fresh! Titles include "Rehab", "Just Friends", "Back To Black", "Love Is A Losing Game", "He Can Only Hold Her", "Some Unholy War", and "Me & Mr Jones". Next is Lioness Hidden Treasures – a (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. Includes "Our Day Will Come", "Between The Cheats", "Tears Dry (Original Version)", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (2011)", "Like Smoke" feat Nas (and some eerily timely lyricism, as of this album's release date), "Valerie ('68 Version)", "Half Time", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Half Time", "Body & Soul" with Tony Bennett, "A Song For You" and more. Next is the 2LP set Live In London – the vinyl debut of material from the DVD of the same name – with titles that include "Just Friends", "Cherry", "Back To Black", "Wake Up Alone", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "He Can Only Hold Her/Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Valerie", "Rehab", "Me & Mr Jones", "Monkey Man" and more. Last is the album Remixes – which features the CD debut of 15 tracks – material from Frank and Back To Black – remixed by MJ Cole, Al Usher, Skeewiff, Truth & Soul, Ghostface, Hot Chip, and others. A very cool collection – and a record that's maybe more "cosmic" than it is "discotheque" – as most of these tunes are more funky than they are clubby! That's not a bad thing at all, though – and the whole thing is almost an extension of the initial late 60s use of moog and other electronics with funkier grooves – taken here into territory that's more in line with 70s sound library and soundtrack funk, especially the cop/crime variety! Selections are from a variety of different artists, but all unite in great use of spacey sounds over funky grooves – on titles that include "Wake Up" by Epsilon, "War Dance" by Kebekelectrik, "Fu King" by Fu King, "Laser" by Laser, "That's The Night" by Night Creatures, "Rhesus O+" by I Visconti, "King Kong" by Orchester Walter Kubiczeck, "All The Night" by Linda Law, and "Cave Man" by Enigma. A wonderful overview of the Cuban musical style of son – the core Afro-Cuban blend that influenced generations of American Latin music in the 50s, 60s, and 70s – and which also laid the groundwork for salsa too! This package stretches back to the roots of the style on record in a really wonderful way – beginning with a full disc of acetates and aluminum recordings from the pre-war years, which may well be the rarest of the bunch – then moving forward for a full CD of pre-Castro work in the 50s, and a follow-up disc from the first few years of Revolution – when the music was still going strong! Given the scope of recordings, it's a bit hard to put our finger on one approach here – but we can definitely say that you'll discover the roots of many more contemporary Latin modes – as you dig into this set of 72 tracks, with work by artists who include Sexteto Bolana, Septeto Habanero, Conjunto Casino, Celia Cruz, Sexteto Tipico Habanero, Ignacio Pineiro, Conjunto Chapottin, Nelson Pinedo, Trio Matamoros, Abelardo Barroso, Beny More, Cachao, Cheo Marquetti, Los Compadres, Miguelito Cuni, and many others.
