✨✧ Wanda JacksonBest Of The Classic Capitol Singles ... CD
Capitol/Omnivore, Mid 50s-Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pivotal singles from the amazing Wanda Jackson – one of the greatest female rock and country voices from the 50s onward – who mixes a cutesy coo and a feral growl for a sound that was pretty much unprecedented at the time! The material bridges proto rock and country music in a way that confused the heck outta radio programmers and the label's hope to break her into superstardom back in the day – and Wanda had a voice that could've (and should've) made her a star on par with the Sun Studios boys club. She's tough and tender at the same time – and Capitol producer Ken Nelson is near the top of his game here, too. This really is the best of her Capitol singles – 29 in all – including "I Gotta Know", "Fujiyama Mama", "Honey Bop", "Did You Miss Me?", "Right Or Wrong", "Sinful Heart", "In The Middle Of A Heartbreak", "Mean Mean Man', "Sympathy", You Bug Me Bad", "Silver Threads And Golden Needles", "Rock Your Baby", "(Every Time They Play) Our Song", "Little Charm Bracelet", "No Wedding Bells For Joe", "Honey Bop" and more. ✨✧ Wanda JacksonThere's A Party Goin On ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the fantastic early Capitol albums from the young Wanda Jackson – music cut when she was much more of a rockabilly artist than a country singer – with a raw vibe that maybe set a whole new standard for female work in postwar pop music! Jackson's as bold here as any of her male contemporaries – but is also able to match raspy charmp with some sweeter elements – balancing things out beautifully, as she storms with her own tunes, and also transforms others. A young Roy Clark is in the group on some sweet electric guitar – and titles include "There's A Party Goin On", "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", "Lonely Week-Ends", "Kansas City", "Fallin", "Hard Headed Woman", "Tongue Tied", "Sparkling Brown Eyes", and "Man We Had A Party". ✨✧ Wanda JacksonHoney Bop (10 inch 45rpm LP) ... LP
Bear Family (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection that brings together some of the most hard-rocking tracks from Wanda Jackson's early years on Capitol Records – a time when the singer became an instant legend for her hard-edged way of putting over a tune! At a time when the early rock scene was dominated by male singers, Jackson cut a very striking figure as one of the few who could weave together elements of hillbilly and R&B like the best young singers at Sun Records – captured here with a rawness that's very different than most of the mainstream productions that Capitol were putting down for the pop market! The guitar is great – as raw and ragged as the vocals – and titles include "Baby Loves Him", "Mean Mean Man", "You Don't Know Baby", "Let's Have A Party", "Funnel Of Love", "Savin My Love", "Honey Bop", "Tongue Tied", "Cool Love", "Hot Dog That Made Him Mad", and the classic "Fujiyama Mama". LP, Vinyl record album

Joyce HarrisI Got My Mojo Workin (trailer version)/No Way Out ... 7-inch
Ace (UK), Early 1960s. New Copy (pic cover)... $11.99 15.99
A killer cut from New Orleans singer Joyce Harris – very different than any take of the tune you might expect! Joyce has a way of mixing soulful inflections with raw rocking modes – kind of like Wanda Jackson singing R&B – and this mix of the tune has all these strange changes and odd effects that really amplify the groove, as Joyce sings with the Daylighters group of Sonny Rhodes! The flipside is equally raw and rocking – a tune that's got plenty of soul, but also has some heavier romping modes too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

RoctoberIssue #53/#54 ... Magazine
Roctober, 2023. New Copy ... $5.99
A very cool double-sized issue of Roctober – long-overdue, as we haven't heard from them in a bit – but well worth the wait, as the range of features and mix of material continues to be stunning – a great reminder that, decades back, this magazine was exploring this territory long before newer publications like Maggot Brain and some of its contemporaries! There's way too much to mention in great detail – but we can tell you you'll find interviews with Mavis Staples, Mike Love, Air Supply, Wanda Jackson, Sarah Dash, and Prince – and that's just in the first few pages. Other features include articles on Yoko Ono, Muzak, Kid Stuff Records, Mick Clintrock, obscure Weird Al songs, rare Maison Soul singles, the secret Sex History Of The Cabbage Patch Kids, Roky Erikson, Question Mark, and a host of reviews, obits, and lots lots more! VariousRockin On Ranch Party (DVD) ... DVD
Stomper Time (UK), Late 1950s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
A heavy dose of rare TV performances – pulled from a Cali program that focused strongly on hillbilly sounds of the 50s, but also took time to feature some up-and-coming rockabilly acts too! The quality's about what you'd expect from 1950s TV, but the performances are great – and there's not much footage out there from some of these giant acts at the time! The DVD features 42 performances in all – great work from The Collins Kids, who were on the show all the time – plus more from Skeets McDonald, Jim Reeves, Merle Travis, Joe Maphis, Wanda Jackson, Johnny Bond, Mac Wiseman, Tex Carman, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Patsy Cline, and others! ✨✧ VariousGood Girls Gone Bad – Wild, Weird, & Wanted ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning, funny, and truly great collection of ultra-rare female tracks from the mid 50s – lots of honky tonk and rockabilly stompers – cut for labels like Fraternity, King, Sandy, and even Sun Records, all pulled together in one wonderfully-themed collection! You'll probably never see this primordial, sludgy early rock and underground country next to those great early Wanda Jackson albums in the bins – but these tracks are all cut from the same cloth, and emote the same pith and vinegar, if not the same innate ability to let loose with sheer early rock power! Great stuff – dug from even deeper reservoirs than the Nuggets compilers dare to look – and the set list will show you that there's plenty to discover in the early years of female rock and roll. Tracks include "Skull & Crossbones", "Killer" and "Tiger" by Sparkle Moore, "Everlasting Love" by Barbara Pittman, "Ten Cats Down" by the Miller Sisters, "Dirty Dishes" by Jeani Mack, "I'm Leaving" by Linda Brannon, "Wille Joe" by the Mystery Trio, "Sugar Baby" by Helen Bozeman, "Three Young Chicks" by the Star Sisters. ✨✧ Yesterdays New QuintetSound Directions – The Funky Side Of Life ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fresh serving of genius from Madlib – served up here in yet another manifestation of the Yesterday's New Quintet combo! Sound Directions have a groove that's quite similar to YNQ, but which focuses a bit more on the skittish percussion of Otis Jackson and "Sloppy" Joe Johnson – a live but spacey approach to rhythm, and one that often has the drums recorded in this gritty way that's nice and crunchy – and which is a perfect "bottom" to the tighter horns and electric keyboards of the set! Madlib's got help from guest players who vary from track to track – fleshing out his unique musical vision that includes new takes on Billy Brooks' "40 Days", Marcos Valle's "Wanda Vidal", Oliver Sain's "On The Hill", Lesiman's "Play Car", and David Axelrod's "A Divine Image" – as well as the original tunes "Theme For Ivory Black", Directions", and "Dice Game". Great stuff all around – with a groove that's as wild as Madlib's trip into the Blue Note vaults! CD
