Walter Bishop JrOld Folks ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
A lost little session from pianist Walter Bishop – one that has the pianist working at an all acoustic level, and in a trio format that's a bit different than his other 70s sessions – but still totally great! The group features wonderful work from Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – both players we totally love together, and who give Bishop a bit of backing that's similar to their work with Cedar Walton. Yet the style here is very different, too – as Walter brings out these more gutbuckety notes at times – still handled with class and care, but with a deeper vibe that seems to resonate especially strongly with the bass of Jones. Titles include "Manha Do Carnaval", "Old Folks", "Up Jumped Spring", and "Straight No Chaser". CD

Walter Bishop, Jr.Keeper Of My Soul (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. Used ... $33.99
One of Walter Bishop's greatest records – an amazing session that's as funky as it is spiritual – and quite different than most of Bishop's other work! The vibe here is wonderful – as Bish plays a host of keyboards, not just piano – and works in the company of other players who include Ronnie Laws on reeds, Gerald Brown on bass, Woody Murray on vibes, and Shakur M Abdulla on percussion – a beautiful mix of cats who help Walter carry off some of his hippest recordings of the time! The use of vibes is especially nice alongside the electric piano – and titles include a great take on Bishop's classic "Soul Village", done here in a nice funky version – plus a version of "Summertime" with Bishop on organ, and the titles "Sweet Rosa", "Those Who Chant", and "N'Dugu's Prayer". Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The keys are coral, and the sound is sublime – one of the greatest albums ever from pianist Walter Bishop Jr, and proof that he can really stretch out, given the right setting! The piano here is all acoustic, but there's an almost-electric vibe to the date – long, open tracks that sway and swell with some great spiritual energy – made even more wonderful by work from reedman Harold Vick, who plays tenor, flute, and soprano sax on the record – and makes it one of his best recordings ever! The reedwork alone is worth the price of admission – but the rhythms are also great too – a mix of soulful, modal, and some slight funky bits – handled by Reggie Johnson on bass, and either Idris Muhammad or Alan Benger on drums. Woody Shaw plays trumpet on some cuts, too – and titles include "Coral Keys", "Soul Turn Around", "Freedom Suite", "Track Down", "Waltz For Zweetie", and "Three Loves". CD

Cellar Live, 1966/1967. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live date – one that's not just noteworthy for the piano of leader Walter Bishop, but also for the reed work of a young Harold Vick – recorded here right around the time he was first making waves in the organ combo of Jack McDuff, but coming across with a very different quality overall! Vick here is more of a spiritualist at times, ala Yusef Lateef – and he often hits a vibe that's more like his 70s work than his more soul jazz-styled recordings of the 60s – really stretching out on the album's long tracks, blowing tenor, soprano, and flute with this searching edge that's completely wonderful. The rest of the group features Lou McIntosh on bass and Dick Berk on drums – and titles include "So What", "Pfrancing", "My Secret Love", "Blues", "Quiet Nights", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Willow Weep For Me". ✨✧ Walter Bishop Jr TrioWalter Bishop Jr Trio 1965 ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure early set from Walter Bishop – recorded for the tiny Cotillion label in the mid 60s, and featuring a young Butch Warren on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums! The setting is simple and soulful – with Walter working through a batch of tunes that are mostly standards, but which include a few nice originals with a fresh approach. There's less of the freer soul that Bishop showed in his 70s work, but the set's still pretty darn nice – and titles include "Dottie's Theme", "Dinkum", "33rd Off 3rd", "Getting Off The Ground", and "Love For Sale". CD seems to have a number more tracks than the LP – a total of 16 in all! CD

✨✧ Walter Bishop JrMilestones (aka Speak Low) ... CD
Black Lion (Germany), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare early date as a leader from pianist Walter Bishop Jr – cut for a tiny east coast label that folded almost as soon as the record was issued – but a date that's gone onto great fame over the years, thanks to circulation in a few different formats! Bishop's got a really maturing approach here – as sharp as his work from the bop years, but with a deeper sense of tone and color too – occasional lyrical moments that get great shading from the bass of Jimmy Garrison and drums of GT Hogan – both players who make the album really something special – a real cut above the usual trio session. In that manner, the record features two tunes that run for nearly 10 minutes each – opening up in that reflectively soulful mode that Bish would be known much more for in later years – and titles include "Speak Low", "Milestones", "Green Dolphin Street", and "Blues In The Closet". CD features 4 bonus alternate takes! CD

Easily one of our favorite DIW piano trio sessions – an album of fluid magic from the mighty Walter Bishop Jr, supported by great rhythm from the team of Peter and Kenny Washington! Kenny Washington's drums are always a delight – playfully lyrical, in a mode that recalls some of the best Billy Higgins work of earlier years – but even better tuned to a pianist like Bishop, who can swing from serious soulful lines one minute – to shorter, sharper, more angular modes the next. Titles include "Una Mas", "Speak No Evil", "Waltz Zweetie", "Crazy She Calls Me", "I'll Remember April", and "What's New". CD

Fontana (Japan), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing record by one of England's greatest jazz talents ever! This very rare album was recorded in the US, under the supervision of Roland Kirk – who also plays on the record, along with Walter Bishop Jr, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes. Tubby's tone is fantastic – with all the raw mature cutting solo power that's made his early 60s sessions some of our favorite jazz records ever. Putting him on a record with Kirk was a genius move – as Kirk's approach brings out a nuttiness in Hayes that you don't always get in his otherwise more straight-laced British groups. Titles include "Lady E", "Afternoon In Paris", "I See With My Third I", and "For Heaven's Sake". Nice long tracks, too! VariousTheo Parrish – Black Jazz Signature – Black Jazz Records 1971 to 1975 ... CD
Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... $12.99
Theo Parrish takes on the music of Black Jazz Records – yet somehow manages to make the whole thing come across with a cosmic groove that's all his own! By that, we don't mean that Theo's messing with the cuts – just that his mix here really highlights the more expansively electric and rhythmically angular elements of the label's classic catalog – sounds that are clearly an inspiration for a huge number of 21st Century musicians and producer – not just Parrish himself! There's a richly spiritual vibe to the whole set – and the collection is easily one of the best presentations of the Black Jazz label we've ever heard – stunning from start to finish. Cuts include "My Favorite Things" by Gene Russell, "Those Who Chant" by Walter Bishop, "Jupiter" and "Convulsions" by The Awakening, "Trance Dance" by Doug Carn, "Time & Space" by Rudolph Johnson, "Criss Cross" and "BE" by Calvin Keys, and "Blue Bossa" by Walter Bishop Jr. CD

Mainstream, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure Blue Mitchell albums of the 70s – and one of the most far-reaching too! The set's still got an electric current, like his other work on the Mainstream label at the time – but there's also less funk at the core, and more of a spiritual jazz vibe – a quality that definitely burns with the "vital" of the title, and which draws strongly from the album's great use of Joe Henderson on tenor and flute – whose presence here really helps underscore the righteousness of the sound! Ernie Watts also blows a bit on the record – and the rest of the group includes Walter Bishop Jr on acoustic and electric piano, Stan Gilbert on bass, and Doug Sides on drums. Susaye Greene adds in some totally amazing vocal effects at a few points – which really furthers the unique quality of the record – and titles include the great "Unseen Sounds", which has some amazingly unusual flute work from Henderson, plus "Booty Shakin", "Vital Blue", "I Love You", and "Herman's Helmet". Bethlehem, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time. The second set of tracks was recorded for a unique big band session led by Art Blakey – featuring a core group with Coltrane, Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop Jr, and Wendell Marshall on some tracks – plus a larger lineup on a number of others. The CD brings together a whopping 27 tracks from these sessions, including some great alternate takes – and titles include "Midriff", "Tippin", "The Outer World", "The Kiss Of No Return", "Pristine Take", and "Oasis" – a previously unreleased track! ✨✧ VariousComplete Bee Hive Sessions (12CD set) ... CD
Beehive/Mosaic, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 12CDs ... Out Of Stock
The long-awaited CD debut of work from the excellent and short-lived Beehive Records – a Chicago company started in the late 70s, to continue the best 60s spirit of Blue Note and Prestige – with a top-shelf roster that included artists like Curtis Fuller, Clifford Jordan, Dizzy Reece, and Johnny Hartman! At a time when most other labels had forgotten about straight, solid, acoustic jazz – Chicago collector Jim Neumann decided to start getting back to basics, and give some of his hardbop heroes a place to record – starting the Beehive label with his wife and just a shoestring budget, and pursing artists who weren't being recorded properly at the time! The result is an excellent run of records – all of which were only issued on vinyl in the late 70s and early 80s, and appear here on CD for the first time ever – in a wonderful package that adds in notes on every session, and traces the short, but wonderful run of Beehive. Like many small labels, Beehive's fame and success was hampered by reasons of distribution and cashflow – but that never kept their music from sounding as best as it possibly could – with plenty of room for the soloists to open up and do their thing, and no attempt at all to modernize or commercialize the recordings. The sessions sparkle like lost gems from overlooked sessions at Rudy Van Gelder's – and offer up a great picture of artists who were almost lost to the record racks at the times – and the 12CD set features the full albums: Baritone Madness by Nick Brigola (with Ted Curson and Pepper Adams); Burn Brigade by Nick Brigola (with Ronnie Cuber, Walter Davis Jr, and Cecil Payne); Neo Nistico by Sal Nistico (with Ted Curson, Ronnie Mathews, and Nick Brigola); Fire & Filigree by Curtis Fuller (with Sal Nistico and Walter Bishop Jr); Manhattan Project by Dizzy Reece (with Clifford Jordan and Charles Davis); Hyde Park After Dark by Clifford Jordan and Von Freeman; Dr Chicago by Clifford Jordan (with Jaki Byard and Red Rodney); Once In Every Life by Johnny Hartman; Starfingers by Sal Salvador (with Eddie Bert and Nick Brignola); Juicy Lucy by Sal Salvador (with Billy Taylor); Roots Branches & Dances by Ronnie Mathews (with Frank Foster); Legacy by Ronnie Mathews (with Bill Hardman and Ricky Ford); New York Jazz Quartet In Chicago by Roland Hanna (with Frank Wess); In High Profile by Dick Katz (with Jimmy Knepper and Frank Wess); Truckin & Trackin by Junior Mance (with David Newman); and Keep On Pushin by Arnett Cobb (with Joe Newman, Al Grey, & Junior Mance).
