Walter Bishop JrBish At The Bank – Live In Baltimore ... CD
Cellar Live, 1966/1967. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
A fantastic live date – one that's not just noteworthy for the piano of leader Walter Bishop, but also for the reed work of a young Harold Vick – recorded here right around the time he was first making waves in the organ combo of Jack McDuff, but coming across with a very different quality overall! Vick here is more of a spiritualist at times, ala Yusef Lateef – and he often hits a vibe that's more like his 70s work than his more soul jazz-styled recordings of the 60s – really stretching out on the album's long tracks, blowing tenor, soprano, and flute with this searching edge that's completely wonderful. The rest of the group features Lou McIntosh on bass and Dick Berk on drums – and titles include "So What", "Pfrancing", "My Secret Love", "Blues", "Quiet Nights", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Willow Weep For Me". Walter Bishop JrCoral Keys ... CD
Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The keys are coral, and the sound is sublime – one of the greatest albums ever from pianist Walter Bishop Jr, and proof that he can really stretch out, given the right setting! The piano here is all acoustic, but there's an almost-electric vibe to the date – long, open tracks that sway and swell with some great spiritual energy – made even more wonderful by work from reedman Harold Vick, who plays tenor, flute, and soprano sax on the record – and makes it one of his best recordings ever! The reedwork alone is worth the price of admission – but the rhythms are also great too – a mix of soulful, modal, and some slight funky bits – handled by Reggie Johnson on bass, and either Idris Muhammad or Alan Benger on drums. Woody Shaw plays trumpet on some cuts, too – and titles include "Coral Keys", "Soul Turn Around", "Freedom Suite", "Track Down", "Waltz For Zweetie", and "Three Loves". CD

Interplay/Art Union (Japan), 1988. Used ... $19.99
An overlooked gem from 1988 – recorded in a mellow trio format at a time when Bishop was doing some of his greatest work in the style! Bishop's piano has a wonderfully ringing tone on the recording – bursting out of the darkness on its own at the start of most of the tracks, then leaping into lively interplay with bassist Paul Brown and drummer Walt Bolden. There's a nice mix of classic tones and warmer soul on the record – and titles include "Dance Of The Infidels", "Sweet Rosa", "Lady Barbara", "Yesterdays", and "Well You Needn't". CD

Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. Used ... $14.99 24.99
One of Walter Bishop's greatest records – an amazing session that's as funky as it is spiritual – and quite different than most of Bishop's other work! The vibe here is wonderful – as Bish plays a host of keyboards, not just piano – and works in the company of other players who include Ronnie Laws on reeds, Gerald Brown on bass, Woody Murray on vibes, and Shakur M Abdulla on percussion – a beautiful mix of cats who help Walter carry off some of his hippest recordings of the time! The use of vibes is especially nice alongside the electric piano – and titles include a great take on Bishop's classic "Soul Village", done here in a nice funky version – plus a version of "Summertime" with Bishop on organ, and the titles "Sweet Rosa", "Those Who Chant", and "N'Dugu's Prayer". CD
(2005 Japanese pressing in a cool textured cover, just like the original LP – in great shape with obi!)

A lost little session from pianist Walter Bishop – one that has the pianist working at an all acoustic level, and in a trio format that's a bit different than his other 70s sessions – but still totally great! The group features wonderful work from Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – both players we totally love together, and who give Bishop a bit of backing that's similar to their work with Cedar Walton. Yet the style here is very different, too – as Walter brings out these more gutbuckety notes at times – still handled with class and care, but with a deeper vibe that seems to resonate especially strongly with the bass of Jones. Titles include "Manha Do Carnaval", "Old Folks", "Up Jumped Spring", and "Straight No Chaser". CD

✨✧ Walter Bishop JrSpeak Low (Muse pressing) ... LP
Muse, 1961/1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare early date as a leader from pianist Walter Bishop Jr – cut for a tiny east coast label that folded almost as soon as the record was issued – but a date that's gone onto great fame over the years, thanks to circulation in a few different formats! Bishop's got a really maturing approach here – as sharp as his work from the bop years, but with a deeper sense of tone and color too – occasional lyrical moments that get great shading from the bass of Jimmy Garrison and drums of GT Hogan – both players who make the album really something special – a real cut above the usual trio session. In that manner, the record features two tunes that run for nearly 10 minutes each – opening up in that reflectively soulful mode that Bish would be known much more for in later years – and titles include "Speak Low", "Milestones", "Green Dolphin Street", and "Blues In The Closet". ✨✧ Walter Bishop Jr.Soul Village ... LP
Muse, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of a rare few electric albums from the great Walter Bishop Jr – a pianist who started during the bop years, but really grew into new modes in the 70s! The set's an album on Muse, but one with the same hip grooves as Walter Bishop's pair of excellent albums for the Black Jazz label – and like those gems, this set features Bishop working on Fender Rhodes – hitting a groove we never would have expected in the old days, and really going for a style that's at the hippest end of the soul jazz spectrum of the 70s! Tunes are a mix of funky fusion and modal, spiritual styles – and other players include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Gerry Niewood on tenor and flute, and George Young on soprano and alto sax – and the horns are all arranged tightly by Mitch Farber, in a way that adds an extra edge to the record, but still leaves plenty of space for Bishop's solo flights on the keys. Titles include great versions of "Soul Village", "Coral Keys", and "Soul Turnaround" – plus the cuts "Philadelphia Bright", "Sweet Rosa", and "Valerie". LP, Vinyl record album

Rocky BoydEase It – Introducing The Rocky Boyd Quintet ... CD
Jazztime/Blue Moon, 1961. Used ... $16.99
The only full album ever issued by tenor player Rocky Boyd – but a set so great, it's definitely made a name for him over the years! Boyd's got a wonderful tone on the set – sharp and soulful, with an approach to the tenor that almost reminds us of early 60s Jackie McLean – particularly in the way that Jackie could hit dark corners with raspy, personal tone. The rest of the group's no slouch either – and features Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – a lineup so great, they give the album a real Blue Note sort of polish – and the album's definitely one that would have been a better-known date, if it hadn't died quickly on the short-lived Jazztime label. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "West 42nd Street", "Avars", "Ease It", "Samba De Orfeu", and "Why Not". CD also features some alternate tracks. CD

Pacific Jazz/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99 About November 25, 2024
A fantastic lost set from the 60s – one of the most hard-hitting jazz albums ever recorded by the Pacific Jazz label, and a unique session that's co-led by trumpeter Kenny Dorham and alto genius Jackie McLean! Dorham left our planet all too soon, and in his final years he was really stretching out – hitting sharper, more modern modes than on his 50s work – dovetailing nicely with Jackie McLean in the years before his new thing recordings! Both players are really pushing for something new – and there's a real Blue Note energy going on here – maybe no surprise, given that the rest of the group features Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The quintet play a fiercely modernist approach to hardbop – somewhat like McLean's studio albums from the time, but even a bit more unbridled, thanks to the live setting of the album – which was recorded at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. Titles include "Us", "San Francisco Beat", "Lover Man", and "No Two People". CD

Tubby HayesTubby The Tenor/Tubby's Back In Town (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Smash/Epic/Fresh Sound (Spain), Early 1960s. Used 2CD ... $14.99 19.99
Two rare US albums from the great British tenor Tubby Hayes, including the great Tubby's Back In Town, which is still pretty darn hard to find! This rare album was recorded in the US, under the supervision of Roland Kirk – who also plays on the record, along with Walter Bishop Jr, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes. Tubby's tone is fantastic – with all the raw mature cutting solo power that's made his early 60s sessions some of our favorite jazz records ever. Putting him on a record with Kirk was a genius move – as Kirk's approach brings out a nuttiness in Hayes that you don't always get in his otherwise more straight-laced British groups. Titles include "Lady E", "Afternoon In Paris", "I See With My Third I", and "For Heaven's Sake". Nice long tracks, too! Tubby The Tenor is another fantastic record from the great British tenor – an early date recorded in the US, and one that really helped set the vibe for some of his later work in the UK! The sound is deeply soulful, similar to that short but great run of jazz releases that Epic issued in the early 60s, including the Dave Bailey albums on the label – and, no surprise, Dave's in the group's on drums – and the rest of the lineup is equally killer, with the mighty Horace Parlan on piano, Clark Terry on trumpet, and Eddie Costa on vibes! Terry's at his hippest here, and the album is magnificent, and perfectly captures Hayes' genius on the tenor in a way that few of his other early recordings ever do. Tracks include "Pint Of Bitter", "Opus Ocean", "Soon", and "You For Me". An amazing record by one of England's greatest jazz talents ever! CD also includes bonus live material recorded in Boston in 1964. CD

No tango here – just a great batch of hard, funky, trumpet-heavy groovers – all in the best early 70s Blue Mitchell mode! The album's easily one of Blue's best from the time – and although the tracks are a bit short, they're put together in a way that dovetails nicely with his earlier grooves on Blue Note at the end of the 60s – arranged by Richard Fritz with some fuller reeds behind the trumpet, in a mode that's partly between funky soundtracks and Kudu Records styles of the period. Players include David T Walker on guitar, Chuck Rainey on bass, Charles Kynard on organ, and Paul Humphrey on percussion – and titles include a great version of Walter Bishop Jr.'s "Soul Turn Around", a funky cover of Cymande's "The Message" – plus "One For Russ", "Peace", "PT Blues", "Killing Me Softly", and "Steal The Feel". One of the more obscure Blue Mitchell albums of the 70s – and one of the most far-reaching too! The set's still got an electric current, like his other work on the Mainstream label at the time – but there's also less funk at the core, and more of a spiritual jazz vibe – a quality that definitely burns with the "vital" of the title, and which draws strongly from the album's great use of Joe Henderson on tenor and flute – whose presence here really helps underscore the righteousness of the sound! Ernie Watts also blows a bit on the record – and the rest of the group includes Walter Bishop Jr on acoustic and electric piano, Stan Gilbert on bass, and Doug Sides on drums. Susaye Greene adds in some totally amazing vocal effects at a few points – which really furthers the unique quality of the record – and titles include the great "Unseen Sounds", which has some amazingly unusual flute work from Henderson, plus "Booty Shakin", "Vital Blue", "I Love You", and "Herman's Helmet". The set feautres Max's quartet with Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Odeon Pope on saxes, and Calvin Hill on bass – plus a very small bit of additional piano by Walter Bishop Jr – and it's got an approach that mixes soul jazz with some experimental touches, and the occasional freewheeling percussion part by Max. Pope's work on tenor sax is especially nice, an edgey sound that recalls some of Billy Harper's work with Roach in earlier years. Titles include "Red River Road", "Lonesome Lover", "Wefe", "Reach For It", "The Dream/It's Time", and "Giant Steps". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has an unglued seam.)

✨✧ Rocky BoydEase It – Introducing The Rocky Boyd Quintet (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Jazztime/Muzak (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CD also features 4 bonus alternate takes of tracks on the album! CD

✨✧ Blue MitchellVital Blue ... CD
Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Dizzy ReeceDizzy Reece – Mosaic Select (Blues In Trinity/Star Bright/Soundin' Off/Comin' On) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete Blue Note recordings of trumpeter Dizzy Reece – an amazing West Indian player who made some big waves on the London scene of the late 50s, then came to the US to cut a few key sides! Reece had an approach to the trumpet that shared some of the boldness of his US contemporaries on the hardbop scene, but which also occasionally had a few more exotic touches as well – not just in Dizzy's phrasing, but also in the way he liked to set up a tune – mixing modern and soulful modes together nicely, in a way that made him a perfect match for the Blue Note era that boasted work by Horace Silver and Art Blakey! The 3CD set features Dizzy's three Blue Note albums Blues In Trinity, Star Bright, and Soundin Off – plus material that was unissued at the time, but later appeared on the now-deleted Comin On CD – a real lost treasure of a session that has Dizzy stepping out even more strongly than before. Players include Hank Mobley, Tubby Hayes, Donald Byrd, Art Taylor, Walter Bishop Jr, Stanley Turrentine, Musa Kaleem, and Art Blakey – and titles include "Blues In Trinity", "Color Blind", "Shepherd's Serenade", "Groovesville", "The Rebound", "A Variation On Monk", "Blue Streak", "Ye Olde Blues", "Comin On", "Sands", "Goose Dance", "Achmet", and "The Case Of The Frightened Lover".
