Wallace RoneyCrunchin' ... CD
Muse, 1993. Used ... $14.99
Very vibrant work from trumpeter Wallace Roney – the sort of record that seems to burst out strongly even on the ballads – which is no surprise, given Wallace's tone at the time! The group here is a strong one for Roney – Antonio Hart on alto, Geri Allen on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and the great Kenny Washington on drums – and although the tunes are mostly standards, Wallace voices them strongly as his one – hitting hard with that Roney approach even at gentle moments, but sounding especially nice on the upbeat tracks. Titles include "We See", "What's New", "Angel Eyes", "Time After Time", and "Woody N You". CD

Wallace RoneyPlace In Time ... CD
High Note, 2016. Used ... $13.99
The best in years from trumpeter Wallace Roney – leading a heck of an amazing group, too – including Gary Bartz and Patrice Rushen! As a leader and soloist, Roney's never been at a loss for creative play, but he's really stepped it up in the way he balances scorching, energetic interplay with melodic, soulful tones. It's timeless stuff, especially with such a tremendous group with each player perfectly adept in both the uptempo and tender moments. Bartz is on alto sax for a number of tunes, with Patrice Rushen on piano, Buster Williams on bass, Lenny White on drums and Ben Soloman on tenor and soprano sax. Includes "Around And Through", "Elegy", "Air Dancing", "Observance", "Ardeche", "L's Bop", "Claire De Lune" and "My Ship". CD

✨✧ Wallace RoneySeth Air ... CD
Muse, 1991. Used ... $12.99
One of Wallace Roney's best sessions from the time – an album with a great sense of balance and fullness, and a tremendous tribute to Roney's strength as a leader on Muse Records! The album features equally great contributions from Antoine Roney on tenor – a player who balances out some of Wallace's boldness with a more languid feel at poitns – one that's further complemented by a rhythm section that includes Jacky Terrason on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Eric Allen on drums. There's some great original compositions on the record – including "A Breath Of Seth Air", "Black People Suffering", "Melchizedek", "Lost", and "28 Rue Pigalle" – and the set also features a sprightly take on "Wives & Lovers". Vincent HerringEvidence ... CD
Landmark, 1991. Used ... $4.99
An early moment of brilliance from Vincent Herring – and just the sort of set to make him one of the strongest young talents to emerge in jazz during the 90s! There's a rock-solid feel to the set – an approach that's steeped in classic hardbop modes, but which has traces of modernism too – never too overstated, but some sharper undercurrents that mark Herring's playing nicely as a bit deeper than the usual altoist. The rest of the group should get a good deal of credit, too – as players like Wallace Roney on trumpet and Mulgrew Miller on piano really share this sensibility with Herring. Titles include "I Sing A Song", "Never Forget", "Soul Leo", "Mr Wizard", "Voyage", and "Evidence". CD also features the bonus track "Hindsight". CD

Rise/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $35.99 39.99 About May 5, 2022 (delayed)
A legendary album of spoken word and spiritual jazz – put together by The Institute of Positive Education in Chicago, and featuring wisdom and knowledge from the legendary Haki R Madhubuti! The album alternates shorter vocal/musical tracks with longer ones that are pure post-Coltrane jazz – played by a group that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Byron Harrison on guitar, and Rufus Wright on piano – all working with saxophonist Agyei Akoto, who's also the music director of the set. There's an incredibly positive feel to the set – one that tackles the issues of the time, but which does so with a sense of optimism that's extremely rare today – and which is part of the real charm of the album. Titles include "Talking Stick", "Rise Vision Coming", "Black Man", and "Walk The Way Of The New World". LP, Vinyl record album

Alphonse MouzonAngel Face ... CD
Tenacious, 2011. Used ... $14.99
One of the straightest jazz sets we've ever heard from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – and one of the greatest to be issued on his Tenacious label as well! The set was put together over the space of a decade or more – and the cuts are overflowing with top-shelf talent – assembled by Mouzon for the album, and recorded with a tight, soulful groove that's very much in the best spirit of recent sessions on labels like Savant or HighNote – or some of those great soul jazz sessions on Muse from the late 80s/early 90s. The groups shift from track to track – mostly in a quintet mode, with players that include Arturo Sandoval and Wallace Roney on trumpet; Ernie Watts, Bob Mintzer, Don Menza, Charles Owens, and Antoine Roney on tenor; Cedar Walton and Kenny Barron on piano, Christian McBride and Henry Franklin on bass, and Mouzon himself (of course!) on drums. Titles include "Stepping Stone", "A Labor Of Love", "Birds On a Wire", "Blues Clues", "More Miles In The Sky", and "I Wonder Why". CD

✨✧ Tony WilliamsForeign Intrigue (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note (Germany), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An intriguing little set from drummer Tony Williams – and a set that shows him still very much in command of his talents well into the 80s! Tony's playing here with all the bold, open energy of his classic recordings – and although he picks up a bit of electric percussion at points, he still plays it all "live" – and really seems to defer to the richer acoustic sounds of the group's great lineup – an all-star setting that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Ron Carter on bass, and Mulgrew Miller on piano! The richness of the alto and trumpet are tremendous – and Hutcherson's vibes ring out beautifully, a perfect balance of tone and timing. Titles include "Foreign Intrigue", "My Michele", "Takin My Time", "Sister Cheryl", and "Arboretum". LP, Vinyl record album
