Epic, 1979. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of his best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. ✨✧ Philip BaileyChinese Wall ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! There's a definite crossover feel to the record – a style that takes Bailey's soulful vocals, and mixes them with lots of catchy hooks – in ways that push the Kalimba aesthetic even more into mainstream modes. Yet the album's still got some solid soul grounding, too – thanks to arrangements by Tom Tom and Arif Mardin – which is a nice contrast to the production by Phil Collins, who also guests on the hit "Easy Lover". Other cuts include "Time Is A Woman", "Go", "Walking On The Chinese Wall", "Photogenic Memory", "I Go Crazy", and "Children Of The Ghetto". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Phillip BaileyState Of The Heart – The Columbia Recordings 1983 to 1988 (Continuation/Chinese Wall/Inside Out/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A trio of solo albums from Phillip Bailey – presented here with bonus material too! First up is Continuation – an 80s soul classic from Philip Bailey – stepping out here from Earth Wind & Fire in a set that has him sparkling strongly as a solo act! The vocals still have that trademark Bailey sound – a wonderful range that's never overdone, and which seems to shine especially well on the mellow and midtempo tunes in the set! Production is by George Duke, who does a lot to preserve the jazzier warmth of Bailey's previous settings – and although there's a bit more crossover potential here, the sound is still never too commercial or aimed at the charts. Titles include "It's Our Time", "Trapped", "I Know", "I'm Waitin For Your Love", "Desire", "The Good Guy's Supposed To Get The Girls", and "Your Boyfriend's Back". Next is Chinese Wall – a big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! Last is Inside Out – a set that has Philip Bailey working with Nile Rodgers, who gives him a lean, clean sound that works perfectly with his vocals! The sound is a nice change from the direction Bailey was heading in previously – a return to the focused soul of the later Earth Wind & Fire years, with his amazing lead opening up in ways that few other singers can match. Tunes are pretty well-penned too – catchy, but never cloyingly commercial – and titles include "State Of The Heart", "Welcome To The Club", "Special Effect", "Because Of You", "Take This With You", "The Day Will Come", "Back It Up", and "Echo My Heart". 3CD set features nice bonus material – "I Know (ext dance mix)", "Love Is Alive", "Easy Lover (with Phil Collins)", "Walking On The Chinese Wall (single)", "State Of The Heart (dub mix)", "Twins (with Little Richard)", "Twins (club mix)", and "Easy Lover (ext dance mix)". Hi Records, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A bit late in the classic Hi years, but Ann's still going strong – in a smooth southern style that recalls the best 70s work by singers like Millie Jackson or Shirley Brown. In fact, Ann takes a hit at the "Shirley/Barbara" answer song cycle that kept going on after Shirley's "Woman To Woman" – and throws her own version of "You've Got The Papers (I've Got The Man)" into the ring as proof! The rest of the record is in a similar man-leaving, man-stealing vein – and titles include "Bip Bam Thank You Mam", "Old Man With Young Ideas", "Livin In, Lovin Out", "Handwriting Is On The Wall", and "I Didn't Take Your Man". ✨✧ VariousPhil's Spectre 2 – Another Wall Of Soundalikes ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then during the 60s, Phil Spector was one heavily-flattered guy! As this second installment in the Phil's Spectre series shows, the Spector "wall of sound" technique was so popular in 60s pop that it was often copied in a range of genres, on a range of labels, by a range of producers that included Alan Lorber, Smokey Robinson, Jerry Fuller, Abner Specter, Al Kooper, Jack Nitzsche, and many others. The collection nicely dips into a variety of rock, pop, vocal, and soul tunes from the mid 60s – all of which show a marked Spector influence – and which together make for a really gorgeous batch of well-crafted 60s tunes, whether or not you even care about the Phil Spector connection! The package also includes a song-by-song set of notes – often with commentary by the original producer – and a list of 24 titles that includes "Don't You Be Ashamed" by Joe South, "Break Down & Cry" by Kane & Abel, "Gee What A Boy" by The Vontastics, "One Block From Heaven" by Mary Wells, "Nite Owl" by The Righteous Brothers, "I Do" by The Beach Boys, "Be My Man" by Suzy Wallis, "Bring It All Down" by The Satisfactions, "No Room To Cry" by Dobie Gray, and "Dreamin Of You" by Noreen Cocoran. ✨✧ PNY Quintet (Swell/Brown/Edelin/Betsch/Giron)Over The Wall ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record with a very deep sound – maybe what you'd guess from the richness of the trombone work of Steve Swell, which is also echoed here by the bass of Peter Giron and drums of John Betsch – both of whom make for a very solid bottom to the set! The music is improvised, but this grounding seems to give it some earth from which to grow – resulting in these flowering lines from Rob Brown on alto sax, and Michel Edelin on flutes – both players whose sense of tonal expression is really opened up here! Swell has this way of moving between the different layers of sound with effortless ease – and the quintet improvise over light compositions with the sort of freshness that keeps free jazz so vibrant over the years. Titles include "Dawn", "Nexus", "Hop Skip & Jump", "New Orleans", "Oer The Wall", "Prevert Is Now", and "For Frank Lowe". CD

Alex Albin & Josh KamlerWritten On The City – Graffiti Messages Worldwide ... Book
How, 2008. New Copy ... $4.99 19.99
More than street art or more traditional graffiti – and instead a pretty cool book of messages scrawled across the city – some the seeming output of well-crafted projects, others the random outpourings of anonymous souls in an urban environment! The book is full color, and filled with photos taken around the world – of paintings, stickers, posters, wall scrawlings, and other text – even some rooftop art as well – and despite the range of materials, there's a surprisingly unified feel to the whole thing – almost this larger voice of the subject in the city, trying to deal with its surroundings – sometimes with wit, sometimes with frustration. Book is 215 pages, softcover, and full color. Book

Dennis Alcapone & LizzySoul To Soul – DJ's Choice (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $8.99 20.99
A fantastic classic early dee jay set from the Jamaican scene – a record that not only showcase the burgeoning talents of the young Dennis Alcapone, but also features a fair bit of duets with Lizzy (Delroy Petgrave) – all at a level that really helps move the style forward! At times, there's plenty of echoes of older rocksteady soul in the rhythms, but the presentation is definitely more 70s overall – especially in the edge that Dennis brings to his vocals, which reflect some of the changing times on the scene. Titles include "DJ's Choice", "The Funky Tang", "Picture On The Wall", "Engine Engine Number Nine", and "Wake Up Jamaica" by Dennis Alcapone – plus "Cry Tough", "The Right Song", and "Ba Ba Ri Ba Skank" by Lizzy & Dennis. CD also features 16 more bonus tracks, 5 of which are new to CD – tracks by Dennis, Lizzy, and others by Hopeton Lewis, Tommy McCook, Earl Lindo, and The Now Generation. CD

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersTheory Of Art (aka A Night In Tunisia – RCA) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1958. Used ... $1.99 3.99
A reissue of one of Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides from the late 50s, a killer album that sports a great lineup of the Jazz Messengers that included Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Bill Hardman, Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest. The three of them sparkle and shine with the sort of brilliance that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, and they wail their way through a 13 minute long reading of "Night In Tunisia", with excellent solos all around, and the other cuts "Theory Of Art", "Couldn't It Be You?", "Evans", and "Off The Wall". This reissue adds the bonus numbers "Social Call" and "A Night At Tony's" recorded for RCA at very nearly the same time, but with a larger group that features Wynton Kelly in place of Sam Dockery, plus the addition of Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, Melba Liston and Cecil Payne in the horn section. Impulse/MCA, 1963. Used ... $2.99
Brilliant work – John Coltrane really opening up in his new spiritual mode of the 60s, hinting at the changes to come, while still keeping the modal groove of previous recordings! The record features tracks from a few different sessions from the years 1961 to 1963, but it holds together beautifully – thanks to a unified creative spirit in the music! The centerpiece of the album is the stunning track "Impressions" – performed by the quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones – but all tracks are great, and titles include "After the Rain", and "Up 'Gainst The Wall" – plus the brilliant cut "India", which features guest work by Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet! Arthur Big Boy CrudupMean Ol Frisco ... LP
Fire/P-Vine (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 39.99
An early full length album from the great Arthur Crudup – and one that wasn't cut until after he'd had years on the scene, including some work that was a key inspiration for Elvis Presley and others of his generation! The set's done in a nice raw style – that grittier side of the Fire/Fury label, with a vibe that's much more southern than you'd expect from the legendary New York imprint – really just Crudup on vocals and lean electric guitar, but with a nicely skittish drummer urging things on in a great way too! Titles include "Look On Yonder Wall", "Ethel Mae", "Greyhound Bus", "Coal Black Mare", "Dig Myself A Hole", and a great version of "That's Alright". LP, Vinyl record album

A really haunting little sound library record, and one that's very different than just about anything else we can think of in the genre! The set is filled with spare keyboards and electronics – almost in the territory of Terry Riley, but slowed down in pace – so that it's more spacious and meditative, with these elements that almost feel like they'd be perfect for tripping out in a planetarium and watching some nighttime star show! The work was originally used in the film In Kluis, but works beautifully here as a meditative album on its own – with titles that include "Fences", "Nude", "The Wall", "Tree Angle", "Observations", "Problems", "Inside", and "Desire". Columbia, 1985. Sealed ... $8.99
Full Force getting busy in a mid 80s groove – the first set the group cut as a headline attraction – and a nice mix of 80s post electro R&B with plenty of influences from the hip hop producers of the time! The group's biggest crossover success was as the songwriting and production force behind some huge hits of the day, from UTFO to Lisa Lisa and many points between – and their own records were a unique mix of period group R&B and rap production that proved to be quite influential. 80s club funk, soul and a couple ballads from Full Force! Titles includes "Alice, I Want You Just For Me!", "Unselfish Lover", "Please Stay", "United", "Girl If You Take Me Home", "Half A Chance", "Let's Dance Against The Wall" and more. Vanguard/Ace (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A great 70s solo performance from John Hammond – recorded live, but in the studio at Vanguard Records – which makes for a wonderfully intimate vibe overall! In a way, the set echoes some of the earliest work that Hammond did for the label – with lots of influence from blues in both his acoustic guitar work and vocals, yet delivered here with a sense of maturity that marks all the artistic growth he'd experienced in the decade or so since those recordings. The guitar work alone is great – proof that Hammond was still one of the major forces in the acoustic world – and titles include "She's A Truckin Little Baby", "The Sky Is Crying", "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Hell Hound On My Trail", "I'm A Guitar King", "Tell Me", and "Look On Yonder Wall". A fantastic session by this groundbreaking modernist – essentially a piano trio album, but recorded with two bass players – Richard Davis and Eddie Kahn – one of whom plays rhythm, the other who solos along with Hill – which makes for a really amazing sound – especially when you realize that the great Roy Haynes is on drums! The result is one of Hill's darkest piano outings, brought even deeper by the bass accompaniment, and the lack of any other horns to support the set – the kind of standout session that somehow made every one of his Blue Note albums so distinct from each other – even though they are so fantastic when considered as a whole – a key moment in jazz during the 60s. Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory that's somewhat more poppy, but still quite soulful overall. And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely! ✨✧ Freddie KingGetting Ready/Texas Cannonball/Woman Across The River ... CD
Shelter/BGO (UK), Early 1970s. New Copy 2CDs ... $14.99 19.99
A trio of crucial early 70s albums from blues giant Freddie King – all brought together in a single set! First up is Getting Ready – a pivotal album in the career of the great Freddie King – his first in a set of records done for the Shelter label in the early 70s – and the kind of material that catapulted King from the underground to superstardom! The label was a project of Leon Russell, who produced the set with Don Nix – giving the whole thing a nice Memphis soul current for the tracks recorded at that city's Ardent Studio, and a nice Chicago vibe for remaining tracks recorded at Chess! Russell is at his most respectful here – playing piano on the record, but never overwhelming it at all – and instead really giving Freddie just the right platform to shine as both a singer and guitarist – on titles that include "Tore Down", "Going Down", "Same Old Blues", "Five Long Years", "Living On The Highway", and "Palace Of The King". Texas Cannonball is a set that was done for Leon Russell's Shelter label – and Russell produced and plays piano and organ on the record, yet still gives Freddie all the space he needs in the lead – which he does wonderfully, both on vocals and his own "singing" guitar! Don Preston is in the small group on second guitar, and there's some nice use of organ as well – and titles include "You Was Wrong", "Can't Trust Your Neighbor", "The Sky Is Crying", "I'd Rather Be Blind", and "Me and My Guitar". Woman Across The River is a smoking electric blues set from Freddie King – and like all of his best early 70s work, an album that's got a heck of a lot more soul than you'd expect! Freddie moves past cliches nicely on the record – smoking in a lean, mean Texas guitar sort of style – but also cooking things up with some LA soul touches that come across nicely. Titles include "Boogie Man", "Just A Little Bit", "Look On Yonder Wall", "Trouble In Mind", "I'm Ready", and "Help Me Through The Day". CD

✨✧ John LennonImagine ... LP
Apple, 1971. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Not the out there primal scream of Plastic Ono, and more of an impeccably produced, easy to love landmark from John Lennon! The title track, beautiful as it is, is so heavily ingrained into rock & roll myth making machine that it's become too easy to overlook how great most of the songs on the album are. It must be the most consistent of John's LPs post-Beatles, and it's just about as essential as they come. Co-produced by Phil Spector, yet it's often not as grandly orchestrated as a Wall Of Sound effort, and well tailored to Lennon's songs. Includes "Give Me Some Truth", "Oh My Love", "How Do You Sleep?", "Imagine", "Crippled Inside", "Jealous Guy" and "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier". LP, Vinyl record album

Junior ParkerDriving Wheel ... CD
Duke/Hip-O Select, 1962. Used ... $11.99
Classic early work from Junior Parker – recorded way back when he was "Little Junior Parker", but done with a full-grown sound that's totally great! The set was done for Duke Records at the same time Bobby Blue Bland was working for the label – and the feel here is a very similar style – one that blends bits of Memphis and Texas blues with a richer, more sophisticated set of backings – slight touches of jazz in the mix, and an overall sound that works perfectly with Parker's smooth-tinged vocals. The sound is really unique – partly soul, partly R&B – and the album is easily one of the greatest illustrations of Junior's talents back in the 60s! Titles include "Foxy Devil", "Driving Wheel", "Someone Broke This Heart Of Mine", "Yonder's Wall", "How Long Can This Go On?", "Sweet Talking Woman", "Seven Days", and "Annie Get Your Yo Yo". CD

The whole thing's very easy to use, and you can change covers as often as you like – so that you can rotate the images on your wall, and create an ever-changing gallery of record art! ✨✧ Martha Reeves & The VandellasBlack Magic ... CD
Motown, 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of our favorite albums ever from Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – a set that's way past their early overheard hits for Motown, and which shows the group really stretching out with a new sort of power! There's definitely a bit of Black Magic in the mix – as there's a fresh feel here that really shows the changes Motown was making at the start of the 70s – with some echoes of the style used with the Jackson 5 – no surprise, given that the album's genius track "Bless You", was written by The Corporation! That track is worth the price of the album alone – and has this incredible wall of sound arrangement, with Martha singing verse after verse about the religiosity of love. But other tracks are great too – and include "No One There", "I Want You Back", "Hope I Don't Get My Heart Broke", and "Tear It On Down". CD

Davis/Everland (Austria), Late 1950s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99
Faye Richmonde's a singer who really has a way with a naughty tune – the kind of material that you might expect from her see-through nightie on the cover! The instrumentation is relatively lean – usually just piano, with jazzy currents – hardly the sex-drenched sound you might expect, but in a way that actually works well to underscore the sometimes-subtle approach of the lyrics – which are never as all-out as raunchy records of the 70s – and which instead are full of double-entendres and coded messages that come across while Richmonde's singing in a saloon-styled mode! Titles include "My Pussy Belongs To Daddy", "Tony's Got Hot Nuts", "My Right Hand Man", "The Swelling Of The Organ & The Coming Of The Bride", "It's Smart To Be Smutty", and "I'll Keep It Turned Towards The Wall". Even back on this album from 1961, it's clear that the girls had a sound that would be huge – and they're working here with early (and great) production from Stu Phillips, sounding heartbreakingly wonderful even without a wall of sound to back them up! There's a really unique blend of pop and soul going on here – delivered with a lusty lead vocal from Ronnie, in a mode that's got a surprisingly adult undercurrent for a girl group record of the time. Titles include "He Did It", "Silhouettes", "Good Girls", "The Memory", "I'm Gonna Quit While I'm Ahead", "Recipe For Love", and "My Guiding Angel". LP, Vinyl record album

Catchy glam pop from guitarist Mick Ronson – the blazing player best remembered for his work with Bowie, here blending punchy riffs and heavier sounds with bubbly hooks and playful production touches. Our favorite tunes showcase the heavy guitar fuzz, but the oddball cutesy songs are endearing in their strange way. Ronson kind of throws a bunch of stuff at the wall here, and the stuff that sticks gets you nodding your head and smiling at the more innocuous touches. A huge package of material from The Sorrows – one full album, a wealth of rare singles, and even some solo material by group member Don Fardon too! The set begins with the album Take A Heart – a searing set from the mid 60s wave of the British scene – delivered with this mix of tunefulness and raw guitars that's totally great, echoed most strongly in the vocals, which really have an edge, even when delivering familiar themes on the lyrics – moodier than most, and in a really great way! The set then moves into a massive 28 more tracks that make up the a-sides and b-sides of the group's singles for Pye Records at the time – titles that include "Baby", "Gonna Find A Cave", "We Should Get Along Fine", "Pink Purple Yellow & Red", "My Gal", "Don't Sing No Sad Songs For Me", "Hooky", "Vivi", "Armchair King", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". The set then concludes with 10 more solo tracks from Don Fardon – some of the hardest to find material in the collection, and some of the most interesting too. Sam Sever's to be credited for lots of great work on the latter – and the set also features some excellent contributions from the young Prince Paul too, plus one great Bomb Squad moment that links the record to other Def Jam work too – but it's also clear that MC Serch and Pete Nice are the kings of the whole thing – a pair that we wish kept on going this strong for years to come! Tribe Called QuestWe Got It From Here – Thank You 4 Your Service ... CD
Jive, 2016. Used ... $7.99
A hell of a comeback for Tribe Called Quest – maybe one of the best musical comebacks ever, and a fantastic reminder of why we loved the group so much in the first place! 18 years have passed since we last heard from the trio (now, sadly, a duo) – and that time only seems to have sharpened their sound, and given them a more powerful presence than ever! Everything we loved about them is still very firmly in place – that sense of collaboration, almost improvisation in a jazz-like way, and those moments of surprise and wonder at all the deft turns they can take in a short space. Yet there's also a new edge – one that might be even more powerful in this highly politicized moment in American history – a bite that the group never had before, and a larger social agenda that makes all of their incredible skills even more amazing, when focused on a target. We've certainly missed them – but the album's also well worth the wait! Undisputed TruthMethod To The Madness/Smokin' ... CD
Warner/Robinsongs (UK), 1976/1979. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 24.99
A pair of classic albums from The Undisputed Truth! First up is Method To The Madness – a gem from the second chapter of the group – that time when they stepped away from Motown, and followed producer/creator Norman Whitfield to his own label in California! The shift of record companies also marks a cool shift in styles too – an approach that still has all the bold, bassy elements you'd know from the earlier hits – but one that also has some fuller, more cosmic elements too! The set begins with a weird electronic spoken number that's almost experimental – then brings up the bass for a bit of heavy funk, while also using electric elements in a way that really points the way to sounds that other big funk groups would cop at the start of the 80s – but which really sound fresh here. Titles include "Sunshine", "Take A Vacation From Life (And Visit Your Dreams)", "Life Ain't So Easy", "You + Me = Love", "Cosmic Contact", "Hole In The Wall", and "Let's Go Down To The Disco". Smokin has them still going strong with Whitfield, in a groove that's every bit as wonderful as their early years! There's a killer mix of funk and deeper soul here that few other acts could handle this well – a way of hitting the flashy funk of Sly & The Family Stone or Graham Central Station – but also not falling into any showbiz traps, either – in a mode that really his the group not only respecting the role of each member, but also working together in a very cohesive way on the album. The result is a great little set that balances funky grooves with some excellent cosmic soul cuts – supported by great session work from giants like Wah Wah Watson, Walt Downing, and Jack Ashford. Titles include "Show Time", "Space Machine", "I Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", "Misunderstood", "Sandman", "Atomic Funk", and "Talkin To The Wind". CD

Killer funky organ – and 100% Dynamite! Jackie Mittoo is one of the all-time great organists – as essential to Jamaica as Booker T was to Memphis, or Jimmy McGriff was to New York. He's legendary these days as the player who completely transformed the Hammond sound with his unique Jamaican instrumental style during his early years with the Skatalites, and on his later solo recordings for Studio One. The record that forever put Nancy Sinatra over the top – thanks to the massive title hit "Boots Are Made For Walking" – and some impeccable Lee Hazlewood production that really found a way to make Nancy sound fantastic! The young Sinatra had been wanting to make her own records for awhile, and had definitely had a few shots before Boots – but Lee Hazlewood really finds a way to bring out the best in Nancy, often using the same kind of bass-heavy, well-paced rhythms that made his own songs so great – and using some spacious production that can make even familiar tunes sound wonderful in Nancy's hands! Billy Strange handled the arrangements, and is an equally force here alongside Lee – especially given his work on guitar – and in addition to "These Boots Are Made For Walkin", other titles include "I Move Around", "In My Room", "Lies", "So Long Babe", "Run For Your Life", "If He'd Love Me", and "Flowers On The Wall". A power pop powerhouse – a group who will forever be remembered for the classic title track to this set, but who also manage to deliver the goods all the way through! The whole album's a stunning showcase for the work of Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook – producers and co-writers of some of the album's best tunes – which have a jaunty, catchy vibe that really prefaces 70s AM radio, and does a great job of building a bridge forward from earlier 60s pop styles. Some of the themes are deeper, but others are lighter – and the production has this way of fusing everything together in this monstrous wall of sound, but without ever sounding as slick as mainstream pop might a few years later. Jeff Carney plays his instrumentation live here, and in ways that are hardly meditative or relaxing – as the whole thing really takes off into the cosmos with the sorts of sounds that would have made Klaus Schulze or Edgar Froese mighty mighty proud – long-spun tunes that pulsate with all these extended lines on keyboards and organs, used with bits of effects and just a touch of sequencer – all played live, with no overdubs or tapes. Harvest/Light In The Attic, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe our favorite album ever from Michael Chapman – a bit more stripped-down and rootsy than his other Harvest Records classics, but in a really great way! There's a fluid spirit to the music right from the start – a great focus on Michael's vocals and guitar, but support from wonderful bass and drums too – which almost creates a folk funk vibe on some of the album's best tracks – this undercurrent of a gentle groove underneath the acoustic elements, unaugmented by any other orchestrations or strings – with really wonderful vocals from Chapman that rival if not beat most of the US singer-songwriters of the time. There's some nice jazzy elements in his guitar chord changes – almost Nick Drake at points, but rougher – and the whole thing's got a subtle sophistication without ever overstating itself. Titles include "Last Lady Song", "First Lady Song", "Among The Trees", "She Came In Like The 6:15 & Made A Hole In The Wall", and "Landships". ✨✧ Lamont DozierOut Here On My Own ... LP
ABC, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic soul from Lamont Dozier – his first LP as a solo artist, and one of the best debuts of the 70s! The record has a quality that's impossible to describe accurately – but it's kind of a post-Motown full-on approach to soul that mixes strings, piano, and that wall of sound groove that was one of Dozier's biggest contributions to the Motor City. Surprisingly, the album's produced by McKinley Jackson – leader of The Politicians, who provided regular backing for Dozier's HDH productions of the time. The real strength, though, is Dozier's voice – which is produced here in a compressed way that brings up the better raspy qualities of his style, juxtaposing them with the tightness of the arrangements in a mode that's similar to Bobby Womack's work of the time. However, Dozier's songwriting is way way better than Womack's by this point – and the album's filled with anthemic soul cuts like "Fish Aint' Bitin", "Out Here On My Own", "Take Off Your Make Up", "Trying To Hold Onto My Woman", and "Let Me Make Love To You". Strawberry (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the work of Don Fardon – a blue eyed soul singer from the UK, one who recorded under a variety of settings in the 60s, and who breaks out here with some very hip work once the 70s come in! The early tunes are almost a male counterpart to the work of Julie Driscoll from the same time – a British rock take on American soul – still done in a rock-based mode, but with lots of influences from some of the American indies. Don's vocals are really great, and the backings on the set all have a solid soulful feel – and some feature backing vocals by singers that include Doris Troy, Madeline Bell, and Katie Kissoon, with whom Don recorded as a duo act in later years. Around the start of the 70s, Fardon had a big hit with a version of "Indian Reservation" – a moment that marked him using his soulful styles towards some more roots-oriented material as well – slightly heavier tunes that even echo some of the changes taking place on the American scene. There's a definite influence from swamp rock at points – a great fit for Fardon's vocals – but there's a lot more going here too – in a huge 3CD package that features 53 studio tracks, plus 18 more live ones, some from BBC recordings, some from the On Tour In Scandinavia album. Tracks include "Mr Stationmaster", "Ruby's Picture On My Wall", "Baby Let Me Take You Home", "Sally Goes Round The Moon", "Captain Man", "Treat Her Right", "Indian Reservation", "San Diego", "Girl", "Superwoman", "Chippewa Town", "Follow Your Drum", "Don't Do That", and "King's Highway". Philips, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wild little concept album from the Four Seasons – one that's packaged in newspaper-style cover, and which presents tunes that almost have that late 60s British "snapshots of life" approach to pop – particularly that put forth by The Kinks on Village Green Preservation Society. The album's a true genius effort from Bob Gaudio – now risen to the ranks of producer for the group, and also the key songwriter for the album too – working here in tandem with the great Jake Holmes, a wonderful choice for a record like this! Arrangements are inventive, playful, and definitely at a level that shows some influence from Pet Sounds or Sgt Peppers – but there's also a focused, all-pop approach to the tunes too – one that's hook-heavy even when trippy, and which shows that the Four Seasons were as great at psychedelic and Sunshine Pop as any of the groups they'd inspired over the years. Titles include "Saturday's Father", "Wall Street Village Day", "Wonder What You'll Be", "Soul Of A Woman", "Something's On Her Mind", "American Crucifixion Resurrection", and "Mrs Stately's Garden". PJ Harvey is one of those artists who you'd really like to be a fly on the wall and bear witness to the makings of her best work, and if any her albums would be among the more vital on a more skeletal lavel – any mid 90s era modern classic in general, really – it'd be her To Bring You My Love and it does not disappoint! Widely and justifiably remembered as one of the great alt rock breakout efforts of the 90s, To Bring You My Love had a big sound, thanks mostly to PJ Harvey taking her art to the next level, but you gotta give credit to producer Flood, too. The almost bluesy vibe of Down By The Water and the title track were never obscured by the bigness of the finished product, but it's really cool to hear it in demo form – which is still fuller sounding than you'd expect. We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one!
