Vijay Iyer & Wadada Leo SmithCosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2016. Used ... $11.99
Open, expressive sounds from the team of Wadada Leo Smith on trumpet and Vijay Iyer on piano, Fender Rhodes, and electronics – all served up in a mode that's quite different from recent records by either musician! The "rhythm" in the title here might be a bit misplaced – as the tunes have very little groove, and instead allow both Smith and Iyer to stretch out boldly in space – Leo on a mix of muted and fully-blown modes, Iyer maybe taking some of his previous ECM lines into even freer territory. The use of electric elements next to Smith's horn is especially nice – and titles include "Marian Anderson", "Passage", and the long title suite "A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke". CD
(Still sealed, cutout mark through slipcover barcode.)

✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithWadada Leo Smith – The Kabell Years 1971 to 1979 (4CD set) ... CD
Tzadik, 1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A window into a near-lost side of American avant jazz of the 70s – the self-produced albums issued by Leo Smith on his Kabell label – presented here as a beautiful 4CD set, complete with over 2 hours of previously unreleased material! The original albums have always been incredibly hard to find, and they show a side of Smith that is one of the purest on record from the time – displaying him as a key innovator in the tradition of Chicago musicians of the AACM, and the New York players of the loft scene – both of whom Smith interacted with freely. Players on the set include Oliver Lake, Anthony Davis, and Pheerokan Ak Laff – and the set features music from the albums Creative Music 1, Song Of Humanity, Reflectativity, and Akhreanvention – as well as unreleased tracks from those sessions! ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithRed Chrysanthemums – Live 1977 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An unreleased set of solo performances from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – one that we'd rank right up there with his most adventurous work of the 70s! Smith comes across wonderfully on the record – full of soul and imagination, and easily as impressive on his solo instruments as scenemate Roscoe Mitchell could be in a similar setting – always moving around with thoughtful shifts in timing and purpose, in ways that always make the whole performance feel very organic, especially as Smith moves between other instruments that include flute, percussion, gongs, and steelophone. Titles include "Jupiter's Astro Waves", "Blue Green Gardens Of The Indigenous People", and "Pan Sonic Fire Rhythms/Red Chrysanthemums/Dark Purple Night On Crater Lake With A Clear View Of Saturn's Rings & Moons". ✨✧ Wadada Leo Smith & Sabu ToyozumiBurning Meditation ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1994. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith in his best sort of setting – working in an openly creative space for improvisation, one that has Smith not only shaping things majestically with his lines on trumpet – but also making some nice shifts to other instrumentation too! Drummer Sabu Toyozumi is a fantastic partner on the set – a sometimes-strong instrumentalist, but one who's also nicely focused too – so that he really finds a way to match all the many shifts and steps that Wadada makes over the course of the album's long, live, improvised performance. Smith also handles a bit of koto, bamboo flute, and percussion – and titles include "Don Cherry – A Silver Flute Song", "Lines", "Burning Meditation/Uprising", "There Are Human Rights Blues", and "Creative Music 1 – Red Mountain Garden Wild Arises & Glacier". ✨✧ Ajay Heble & Rob WallacePeople Get Ready – The Future Of Jazz Is Now ... Book
Duke, 2013. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The future of jazz is now, even if it's in the past – as the editors here bring together a selection of essays that document the forward-thinking movements in jazz from the mid 60s onwards – some of which are only getting full appreciation all these many years later! There's a nice variety of subjects from an equally nice variety of writers – and essays include "Jeanne Lee's Voice" by Eric Porter, "Days Of Bread & Roses" by Mark Ribot, "Experimental Music In The Academy In New York City" by Tamar Barzel, "The Antiquity Of The Avant Garde" by John Szwed, "Black Jazz In The Digital Age" by Greg Tate, and "Ancient To The Future" by members of the AACM, including Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Don Moye, Wadada Leo Smith, and Roscoe Mitchell. There's also a section on the "Jazz Photography Of Thomas King" – and the whole thing is 312 pages, softcover, with some black and white photographs. Book
