Beggar & Co featuring The Funk Jazz CollectiveBrass, Strings & Things ... CD
MBJ (UK), 2007. Used ... $14.99
A great revival of this classic British soul ensemble – taken into even funkier territory than before, thanks to help from Bluey, Noel McKoy, and other UK soul legends! The sound is way more funky than you might expect, but also pretty top-shelf too – not small combo deep funk, but a large ensemble of horns next to the tighter rhythm core – all in a blend that reminds us of some of the best Philly backings from the 70s! Vocals are by Camille Hinds, Noel McKoy, and Linton Beckles – but the tracks almost seem to have an equal focus on the instrumentation at the core – a great blend of funk and soul that's possibly even more impressive, given that the album was recorded live. Titles include "Pete's Crusade", "Cosmic Lust", "I Like It", "Time", "London Town", "Movin", "Time", and "Bahia De Palma". CD

Expansion (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent work from a very well-named group – as the contemporary combo forwards the legacy of British funk in the late 70s and early 80s – as the supergroup features original members of Central Line, Beggar & Co, Light Of The World, and Hi-Tension – all seminal groups from back in the day! The sound is a bit more modern, but the approach is very much the same – superbly crafted grooves that start way down in the rhythm section, then bubble on up with lots of jazzy solo work over the top – and lead vocals from Paul McLean, who's also joined by some of the other members of the group. The whole thing is a great meeting of the minds – with lots of the sophisticated, sometimes jazz-based touches that generation of British soul was so good at – on tunes that include "Lifted Up", "Summer", "Smilin", "For Tomorrow", "Sign Of The Times", "Step On Board", "BFA", and "This Is What We Do". An obscure set of work from George Clinton and the P-Funk empire – a selection of live material from years when George wasn't hitting the studio as much, but still doing great concerts all around the globe! There's not much in the way of dates or players here, but if you caught a Clinton performance in the 80s or early 90s, you'll know the kind of groove going on here – classic P-Funk, maybe even more energized in a live setting – on titles that include "Ain't Nothin But A Jam Y'All", "Good Love", "Bop Gun", "Aquaboogie", "Flashlight", "Standing On The Verge", "Maggot Brain", and "State Of The Nation". ✨✧ Con Funk ShunConfunkshunizeya – The Mercury Anthology ... CD
Mercury/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Super-sharp work from Con Funk Shun – one of the best of the mainstream funk acts to emerge in the second half of the 70s – working with the sort of style that was trained in the funky 45 underground, then given a bigger, fuller push to album-length glory! The set is a superb selection of their work for Mercury records – and the tracks here also really show why Con Funk Shun were always a cut above – as they had a way of bringing strong soul vocals to play that often illuminated the tunes very strongly – especially when the group would harmonize together. The set features 32 tracks in all – including "So Easy", "Chase Me", "Ffun (12" mix)", "Confunkshunizeya", "Loveshine", "Shake & Dance With Me", "Sure Feels Good To Me", "Electric Lady", "Burnin Love", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Ms Got The Body", "By Your Side", "Bad Lady", "California 1", "Too Tight", "Lady's Wild", "Let Me Put Love On Your Mind", "Who Has The Time", "Ain't Nobody Baby", and "Got To Be Enough". Mercury/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy ... $10.99
One of the sweetest-grooving albums ever from Con Funk Shun – proof that the group was almost better when they tightened things up a bit! The set was produced by Deodato at the height of his hit-making soul powers – and it's got a sharpness that really helps bring the Con Funk Shun groove into focus – a style that's not nearly as commercial as Deodato's work with Kool & The Gang, but which shares a similar blend of jazz and modern soul elements! Most tracks groove nicely, even some of the mellower ones – and Deodato's got a perfect balance in the sound of the set – keyboards, beats, and bass all in the right places, with plenty of soulful vocals flowing warmly over the top. Titles include "Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold", "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Indiscreet Sweet", and "Baby I'm Hooked". CD

Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – working here under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". CD

Pickwick, 1978. Sealed ... $14.99
Early stuff by Con Funk Shun, recorded in 1973, and a lot funkier than some of their later work. The set went down in Memphis, and the overall sound is kind of a Bar-Kays-ish ensemble funk style, although with less of a heavy guitar groove. We're not sure if there ever was another pressing of the material – as this 1978 Pickwick issue is the only one we've ever seen. Tracks include the 9 minute long instrumental "Seascape", plus "Funky Things On Your Mind", "Love In me", "Time", and "Get Down With It". LP, Vinyl record album

A 3CD package that collects the 2 full studio albums by Brazilian funk group Funk Como Le Gusta – Roda De Funk and FCLG – plus a full bonus disc of remix material and a number of bonus tracks too! This one-man orchestra just keeps on getting better and better with each new record – working with the funk you'd expect from the name, but also all these cool and moody touches that mix together David Axelrod-like ambition with some of the sharper snap of hip hop production! This time around, Seth Applebaum has a fair bit of strings and horns in the mix – plus added voices, some strong lead singers – and an array of sonic touches that make for a richness that's much deeper than it is ghostly! Previous records were good, but Seth's really onto something great hear – and mixes together strands of sounds into something that's much richer than its parts – emerging as a surprising maestro for the underground, on titles that include "Stoop Talk", "Mourning", "Drop Me A Line", "Little Bird", "Fuzzy Logic", "Quiet Soul", "Tojours", "Queen Bee", and "Cost Of Living". A set that's definitely funky, but which maybe has a lot more going on as well – richer production moments that move between ambitious soundscapes and fuzzier freakouts – but all without losing the groove at the core! The record's billed as "mysterious", but really seems to come from the talents of Seth Applebaum – a great producer and arranger who manages to keep all the tight elements at the core, including some great bass and drums – while also letting things freak out up top a bit more – almost as if David Axelrod were given the chance to work with some of the younger funk combos in recent years. There's a bit of trippy vocals, but most of the set is instrumental – and titles include "Seven Eight", "Spirits In The Distance", "Broken Boogaloo", "Isaac Hayes", "Slow Down", "Kaddish", and "Modern Scene". Maybe the third great Philly studio group of the 70s – after MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra – a killer combo who provided backing grooves to plenty of great club tracks over the years – and who step out strongly here on their own debut album! Bunny Sigler helps give the album a sharp focus – with his own production and songwriting in play – in modes that are very much like his own best club tracks of the time – but the group is more than great enough on their own – with a funky edge that definitely lives up to their name, and a groove that's even sharper than the two aforementioned contemporary combos. Lead vocals are by James Carmichael, who's totally great – and titles include "Don't You Wanna Party", "Never Let It Go Away", "I Got My Mind Made Up", "Dark Vader", "Wide World Of Sports", and "You Say You Want Me To Stay". CD features 5 bonus tracks – "I Got My Mind Made Up (orig single)", "I Got My Mind Made Up (Larry Levan 12" mix)", "Crying (Larry Levan 12" mix)", "Crying (Bobby Guttadoro 12" mix)", and "Dark Vader (Pat Stapley 12" mix)". The sound of this set is head and shoulders above their already-great album One – warmer, jazzier, and done with a richer instrumental vibe that we never would have expected! There's still plenty of beats and keys in the mix – but the album also features some really strong vocals on a number of cuts – plus moody trumpet lines on some of the best instrumentals. Con Funk Shun really hit a tight groove on this one – late 70s dancefloor funk at its finest – and a turning point for the group that set the scene for 80s grooves to come! The killer group vocals, thumping funk bass and punctuating horn blasts are in full effect, and the group is also starting to work more with synthesizers and electronic sound washes – the spacey touches blending perfectly with their tried-and-true funk. A great batch of tunes, well-produced by the group and Skip Scarborough, and ear-pleasing tunes all the way – sparkling with a great blend of bassy funk and smooth ballads! Tracks include "Fire When Ready", "Chase Me", "Not Ready", "Da Lady", "Candy" and "(Let Me Put) Love On Your Mind", "Main Slice" and "Images". LP, Vinyl record album

A trio of early 80s efforts from Con Funk Shun in a 2CD set – with bonus tracks! Touch is a killer from the group – one of the few mainstream funk groups who actually managed to sound better and better with each new record – and on this set, they really seem to come into their own! Titles include "Too Tight", "Lady's Wild", "Give Your Love To Me", "Kidnapped", "Welcome Back To Love", "Touch", and "Play Widit". Includes 2 bonus tracks: "Lady's Wild (12" Version)" and "Body Lovers (12" Version)". 7 is not the group's 7th album, but a bold statement of the unity they feel as a 7 piece ensemble – perfectly lived up to in the record's well-crafted grooves! The album's one of Con Funk Shun's best overall – really solid, but never too slick, very tight in the bass department, but still soulful on the vocal tip, and never afraid to slip into a sweeter, more mellow tune. Titles include "Straight From The Heart", "Bad Lady", "Promise You Love", "I'll Get You Back", "A Song For You", and "California 1". To The Mix has snapping grooves and a sweet clubby sound. The bass is tight, the keyboards are electric, and the rhythms are great – never forced or stiff, and always flowing with a sense of soul that's head and shoulders above most of the group's contemporaries. Vocals are strong too – especially on the numbers that step things down a few notches – and titles include "Ms Got The Body", "Let's Ride & Slide", "Everlove", "Hide & Freak", "You Are The One", "Take It To The Max", "The Freak", and "Love's Train". Includes the bonus "Ms Got The Body (12" Version)" and an instrumental version. CD

✨✧ Funk IncFunk Inc/Chicken Lickin' (UK pressing) ... CD
Prestige/BGP (UK), 1971/1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first 2 albums by Funk Inc – brought together in a massive fest of funky organ/guitar jazz jams! First up is the legendary Funk Inc album from 1971 – a killer instrumental set of hard organ grooves and funky basslines! This was the album that broke Funk Inc out of their Indianapolis scene, and made them a force to be forever reckoned with in the history of funky jazz. The album grooves hard in the same sound as some of the classic work by Prestige jazz funk giants like Rusty Bryant, Charles Earland, or Ivan Boogaloo Jones – but it's almost even tighter than their work, because the Funk Inc combo as a tightly woven group of players who'd been together for a number of years. The record's filled with monster cuts that you'll recognize immediately, like the group's famous "Kool is Back", which has a monster sample on the intro, and hard heavy Kool & The Gang grooves throughout. Other tracks include "Sister Janie", "The Whipper", and "Bowlegs". Next up is Chicken Lickin – funky organ, hard tenor sax, and plenty of choppy guitar make this another jazz funk gem in the crown of the legendary Funk Inc! The group are still totally at the top of their game here – stepping out with a deep, soulful Indy-bred blend of jazz and funk – a groove that was easily one of the hippest going in the early 70s Prestige Records scene – and that's saying a lot, given the company the label was keeping at the time! The record's got one track that features some nice soulful vocals – the political cut "Let's Make Peace & Stop The War" – but the best cuts are the instrumentals, grooving along hard in the band's best modal funky tradition! Titles include "The Better Half", "Jung Bungo", and "Running Away". CD

These guys have a sharpness that rivals both groups – a way of getting everything right down on the money, at a level that's clearly inspired by the James Brown Band of the late 60s, but given a very different flavor – thanks to the Japanese language lyrics of the lead singer! Black & BrownFile Under Funk ... CD
Irma (Italy), 1995. Used ... $4.99
One of the best groups to come out on Irma during the mid 90's, and a tight Italian ensemble with a classic jazz funk groove. The band is co-led by guitarist Andrea Raffini and keyboard player Goffredo "Picchio" Bagnoli, and the sound is nice and jazzy, with a feel that's similar to classic instrumental LPs on Verve or Milestone from the late 60's. At points, the percussion gets a little more modern, but the groove is always nice and jazzy. 3 cuts have vocals, but the other 13 are instrumental. Tracks include "Tribal Boogaloo", "Afro T", "Manic Samba", "Chinese Jungle", and "We Gotta Party". CD

Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 18.98
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

✨✧ BT ExpressGive Up The Funk – The BT Express Anthology 1974 to 1982 ... CD
Big Break (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible legacy of funk – from a group who were easily one of the tightest, sharpest acts in the mainstream soul scene of the 70s! BT Express are a combo who pre-date disco, and whose grooves went a long way towards forging the blueprint for that mid 70s movement – but their music also never went the way of the easy crossover hit, or the cliched mode of pop disco production – as the second half of the 70s only seemed to have the group digging in their heels and sounding even funkier than ever! Compression is the key to the BT Express sound – an ability to bring together many different elements and lay them down right on the money together – focusing things so that the complexity of their instrumentation is often understated, even though it's the quality that makes their grooves so great! This wonderful package really gets right to the core of the BT Express sound – picking all the right tracks from both their indie and major label years – and serving up 31 tracks that include "Make Your Body Move", "Happiness", "This House Is Smokin", "Mental Telepathy", "That's What I Want For You Baby", "Peace Pipe", "Shout It Out", "Sunshine", "This Must Be The Night For Love", "What You Do In The Dark", "Ride On BT", "Give Up The Funk", "Does It Feel Good", "Can't Stop Grooving Now", and "Do It Til You're Satisfied". Paquito D'RiveraFunk Tango ... CD
Paquito/Sunnyside, 2007. Used ... $7.99
A great little album from Paquito D'Rivera – not nearly as gimmicky as you might expect from the title, and a soulful set that's right in line with some of his first few gems as a leader in the US many years back! There's definitely some tango quality to some of the tunes – but it's mostly just a bit of bandoneon used lightly in the instrumentation – leaving most of the work here to sparkle in that Havana-influenced blend of jazz and Latin roots that's always made D'Rivera's music so great. Paquito plays alto and clarinet, alongside trumpet and valve trombone from Diego Urcola, piano from Ed Simon and Alon Yavanai, bass from Oscar Stagnaro, and drums from Mark Walker. Hector Del Curto plays bandoneon on the record – and tracks include "Milonga 10", "What About That", "Pere", "Revirado", "Funk Tango", "Mariela's Dream", "Como Un Bolero", and "Giant Steps". CD

Herbie HancockJazz To Funk (Blow Up Sessions/Kawaida) ... CD
Aim (Australia), 1966/1969. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.99
A pair of early sessions from Herbie Hancock – both very different than his Blue Note work of the 60s! The set features 11 tracks from material that Herbie recorded for the Warwick label earlier in the decade – material issued with a title makes it seem like the cuts are from Herbie's score to the film Blow Up – although we're guessing that they're not, although they've always been issued without much in the way of session details! That hardly matters, though – as Herbie is great on piano – younger and rawer, more soul jazz than modern – on titles that include "Smoochie", "Far Out", "Afro Boogie", "Rock Your Soul", "Jammin With Herbie", "Herbie's Blues", and "Night Walker". Next is a record that wasn't actually first issued under Herbie's name – a super-hip batch of spiritual jazz tracks by Albert Toodie Heath of the Heath Brothers – working here on a rare session as a leader, with a sound that's right up there with the Heath Brothers' early work for Strata East!! The lineup is incredible – as Heath is joined by players that include Don Cherry, Buster Williams, Mtume, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, and Ed Blackwell – all coming together for a session that's nearly lost to the history books, but which is one of the strongest spiritual jazz sessions of the late 60s! Herbie plays all acoustic piano throughout, and the tracks are long, leaping, and loping – with stretched-out spiritual solos from Jimmy Heath and Don Cherry – and a proud and righteous sound that's extremely free-spirited without going too far out! Titles include "Baraka", "Maulana", "Dunia", and "Kamili". CD

Prestige, 1966. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A strange and tasty little album that Roland Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s – one of his few outings in such a format, and a smoking little session that almost makes us wish he'd cut more of them! The format is relatively simple – with lots of interplay between McDuff's organ and Kirk's range of reeds (tenor, manzello, stritch, flute, and siren on this record!) And given that both players have a good sense of whimsy that still always manages to swing nicely, the pairing is a strong one – and makes for a record that's slightly different for both artists. Titles include "Makin Whoopie", "Funk Underneath", "Kirk's Work", "Three for Dizzy", and "Doin' the Sixty-Eight". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare funky soul from Ghanaian disco diva Nana Love – the rare, appropriately-titled Full Of Funk record from 1979 – with dynamite vocals by Nana and featuring Ghana legend Harry Mosco and other incredible players in the studio band! Nana's voice is uniquely amazing – with a sweet, girlish tone that builds to a lioness roar on occasion – which is incredibly compelling – and sung entirely in English. The band provides a wicked backdrop of funky dancefloor soul – propelled by fantastic guitarwork by Mosco, Paul Pryce and Les Forrest, killer basslines by Grek Haywood, sax and flute by Humphrey Okoh, percussion by Ayindi, drums by Tony Martin, synth and clavinet by Adrian Bennett and piano by Richard Reid. A damn soulful album from Ghanaian percussionist Rim Kwaku Obeng – recorded in LA at the end of the 70s, with loads of sweet clubby touches in the mix! Rim gets in plenty of tight percussion – lots of which showcases his rim-heavy approach to the drums – and also plays keyboards and sings a bit too – in a larger group that mixes in some very hip LA funky elements, a bit like some of the criss-crossing that Hugh Masekela did on his Chisa Records sessions! The style makes for a great bit of funky club with lots of deeper acoustic percussion elements in the sound – and titles include the massive break classic "Funky Drummer", plus "Nothing Is Free", "Spend Your Money", "Gas Line", "Sunkwa", and "Believe In Yourself". PropositionsFunky Disposition – The Complete Detroit Funk Propositions Collection ... CD
Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $5.99 18.98
Thundering funk from the early 70s Detroit scene – and the complete work of The Propositions, a group who only ever managed to issue a few singles at the time! Due to a typo on the label of one single, the Propositions were also sometimes known as the Prepositions – but whatever the name, the band is pretty darn funky – as you'll hear in this excellent little set. Years back, the folks at Luv N Haight collected together the group's rare singles to make something of a full LP – but now, years later, they've gone back in the vaults and have come up with a huge amount of unreleased work to add to the mix – making for an overstuffed, double-length set that's filled to the rafters with great tunes. Most tracks are in a stone funky 45 mode – but they also groove out a bit longer than the usual single, and give the band plenty of room to roll around some great basslines and horn bits, which are in turn supported by some really wicked work on guitar, organ, and keyboards! Most tunes are instrumentals, and titles include "Funky Disposition", "Live Funk Session", "Do Whatever Turns You On (parts 1 & 2)", "Groovin For The Groove", "Something Different (long edit)", "Sweet Lucy", "Vamping", "Africana", "Free & Easy", "Bad Seed", "You've Been Chose", and "Kool Twist (live garage session 2)". 2CD package is filled with gems – a total of 20 tracks in all! LC/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99
A sweet 70s groover from the great Lonnie Smith – a soulful little session that has the keyboardist really stretching out in some great ways! At the time, Smith fares a lot better than some of his late 60s jazz organ contemporaries – as he's got a great lean style, perfect for the decade's increasing use of electric keyboards and larger backings! This set's a great example of that style – as Smith moves way from his 60s soul jazz roots, into the soaring blend of jazz, funk, and soul that you'd also hear on Johnny Hammond albums of the time – almost more soul than jazz, given the presence of vocals on some cuts – but still always with more than enough room for the leader to stretch out and solo. Backings are nice and tight – and handled by Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) – and tracks include "Funk Reaction", "For The Love Of It", "It's Changed", and "When The Night Is Right". Joe Tex is definitely not without funk on this sweet little set – a smoking TK Records session that carries strongly from the vibe of his "I Gotcha" years! Longtime producer Buddy Killen is still on deck to keep everything tight and right – a mix of Joe's southern soul roots with some sharper elements of the 70s – served up here at a level that may well be one of the most perfect blends of all the great Joe Tex styles – even though the record itself has kind of a hokey title and cover (which seems to have a bunch of white folks, obviously "without funk", ready to throw stones at Tex!) Joe wrote all the lyrics himself, and the few mellow moments have a wonderfully heartbreaking quality. Stax/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 LPs ... $19.99 22.99
The funkiest man? Could well be – and this set will more than support that case! By the time of these recordings, Rufus Thomas was already a legendary figure in the Memphis scene – an aging R&B star that also worked on radio and did a fair bit of promotion for other artists, including daughter Carla. At the end of the 60s, Stax brought him into the studio with the idea of pumping up his sound a bit – adding in some of the newer funky styles, which proved to be a perfect fit for Rufus' rough-hewn style of vocals. Tracks on the set feature a number of classic singles from these years, plus a few unissued numbers – with an all funky track list that includes "Funkiest Man Alive", "Give Me The Green Light", "Itch & Scratch", "Turn Your Damper Down", "Funky Hot Grits", "I'm Getting Better", "Sophisticated Sissy", "Funky Mississippi", "Git On Up & Do It", "The Breakdown (part 1)", "Push & Pull (part 1)", "Do The Double Bump", "Funky Robot (part 1)", "Memphis Train 75", and "Funky Bird". Motown/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
6 Motown albums from Jr Walker & The All Stars – all long overdue for reissue! First up is A Gasssss – a gas of a record from Jr Walker & The All Stars – a set that has the magical Johnny Bristol producing – giving the group this really warm, soaring sound that's totally great! Walker still serves up plenty of strong tenor solos, but there's also some vocal currents in the mix – strong leads at times, but also some nice backups too – all of which really helps to keep things soaring! Titles a nice mix of Motown covers and original material – and titles include "I Was Made To Love Her", "Do You See My Love", "And When I Die", "Honey Come Back", "Holly Holy", "Riding High On Love", "At A Saturday Matinee", and "Groove & Move". Next up is Rainbow Funk – a record that definitely has Jr Walker & The All Stars picking up a bit of funk – but in a groove that still mixes things with that warmly soulful glow the group had right from the start! The basslines are definitely up a bit from before – although not rumbling in Norman Whitfield territory – and the sax solos get a bit more space to stretch out and bite on the longer numbers, but often with a bit of backing vocals to warm things up around the edges! Jr is great all the way through – Motown's very strong answer to King Curtis – and titles include "Right On Brothers & Sisters", "Way Back Home", "Feeling Alright", "Psychedelic Shack", "Pieces Of A Man", and "Teach Them To Pray". Moody Jr is a sweet early 70s groover from Jr Walker & The All Stars – a set that reunites the group with producer Johnny Bristol, who always has a great way of helping them set fire to their sound! Walker and company may have shot from the gate with a mix of R&B tenor and Motown soul – but the sound here is much more in the latter, more matured mode of the label – with strong deep soul lyrics on a number of cuts, which are balanced out nicely by Bristol's fuller production. There's plenty of sax solos too, of course – and titles include "Way Back Home", "Bristol's Way", "Don't Blame The Children", "Me & My Family", "Still Water Medley", and "Groove Thang". Peace & Understanding is a record that has Jr Walker and the group stepping out with some of the righteous touches promised in the title – partly in the choice of songs on the set, which are all nicely tucked into that strong mix of deep soul vocals and saxophone lines that had become the Jr Walker groove! The set features work from a number of different arrangers – all the hipper side of Motown in the early 70s, as the list includes, Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and James Carmichael – and tunes include two great originals, one by Hutch, one by Leon Ware. Tracks include "It's Alright Do What You Gotta Do", "Soul Clappin'", "Gimme that Beat (parts 1 & 2)", "It's Too Late", and "Peace & Understanding Is Hard To Find". The self-titled Jr Walker & The All Stars album is maybe the rarest in the bunch – an obscure UK-only record from 1974, and one that has the group's usual approach warmed up by some more ambitious arrangements – a bit like the direction some of the vocal acts of the 70s were taking at the time! The production on most of the set is by Clarence Paul – and there's mostly a focus on the saxophone, not any vocals at all – which makes the set feel a bit like some of the Willis Jackson or Lou Donaldson work for Atlantic around the same time – or maybe even a bit like Hank Crawford on Kudu. Titles include "Boogie Down", "All In Love Is Fair", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Break Down & Sing", and "Dancin Like They Do On Soul Train". Hot Shot is a mid-70s stormer from Jr Walker & The All Stars – a set that glides along on a fuller set of backdrops than before, with Holland-Dozier-Holland production from Brian Holland returning to Motown – but in a hip 70s style that has strings and funk dancing along in a great way beneath the strong sax solos in the lead! There's a bit of vocals on the record, but the real strength lies in the instrumentation – especially some of the weirder, fuzzier guitar lines and keyboards. Titles include "Why Can't We Be Lovers", "Hot Shot", "Probe Your Mind", "I Need You Right Now", and "You Ain't No Ordinary Woman". CD

The tracks were recorded in Chicago and Detroit – most with vocals by The Velvet Hammer – and titles include "I Don't Need Mary (Juana)", "The Vow", "I Betcha Gonna Like It", "There's A Party", "Man To Woman, Woman To Man", "I Wanna Be Your Show", and the "blue" and "red" versions of the instrumental track "The Velvet Groove"! Maybe not the funk of ages, but a mighty nice solo set from Bernie Worrell – done at a key stretch when he was working away from George Clinton and the P-Funk universe! The set's got Bernie opening up in a blend of jazz and funk – and some tracks feature lead vocals, in a style that takes off from his earlier solo album on Arista, but tuned here with a bit more of that electro vibe that the Gramavision album was doing so well at the time! Bernie handles much of the music himself, but there's plenty of key guests on the record too – rhythms from Sly & Robbie, more keyboards from Herbie Hancock, guitar from Keith Richards and Vernon Reid, and seven some backing vocals from David Byrne and other old associates from the P-Funk years. We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. Soar through the skies on this sweet collection of rare African funk – the sixth volume in a series that seems to get better and better with each new release! Most of the cuts here are heavy on styles that resonate with the American scene of the late 70s – particularly the large ensemble funk modes that came on strong when the bigger US funk acts moved from the indie labels to the majors – tight, but never too smooth – and topped here with some elements that also echo other West African styles, but with a vibe that always seems to lean more towards a strong inspiration from American funk and soul! Titles include "Black Soul" by Airto Fogo, "Ngigna Loko" by Ngalle Jojo, "You" by Vicky Edimo, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" by Eko, "My Native Land" by Mike Kounou, "Be Yourself" by Akwassa, and "Kosa Mba" by JK Mandengue. Jazzy 45s galore – and a huge dip into the vaults of Prestige Records! This tasty set brings together 18 classics recorded in the heyday of the jazz funk years at Prestige – the late 60s and early 70s, a time when the soul jazz sounds of previous years were being forged into a leaner, meaner, harder-hitting groove. And although the LP was the growing format during these days, there was actually a heck of a lot of great work issued on 45s – still spinning strong with the jukebox crowds in the clubs and tap rooms, and still getting major play on radio stations, where the single was still king. The set features many 45 mixes of funky classics that you might know from LPs – and intersperses them with some other more obscure numbers pulled from full albums – making for an all-solid, all-funky set of tracks from one of the hippest jazz labels ever! Titles include "Fire Eater" by Rusty Bryant, "Don't Knock My Love" by Idris Muhammad, "Jungle Strut" by Gene Ammons, "Express Yourself" by Idris Muhammad, "Right On" by Boogaloo Joe Jones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" by Melvin Sparks, "Sing A Simple Song" by Charles Earland, "Son Of Man" by Houston Person, "Listen Here (part 1)" by Freddie McCoy, "Black Talk (part 1)" by Charles Earland, "Message From The Meters" by Leon Spencer, "Reelin With The Feeling" by Charles Kynard, "I Want You Back" by Harold Mabern, and "Thank You (part 1)" by Melvin Sparks. VariousEarly Works – Funk, Soul, & Afro Rarities From The Archives (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), Mid 2010s. New Copy ... $19.99
A really great little collection – one that's maybe not as "early" as you'd guess from the title, given that most of these tracks are less than a decade old – but a set that really shows the great ear for a classic style that we love from the ATA label! Most of these tracks have a rock-solid deep funk mode – more 70s in their approach, and with a range that moves between cinematic funk, Ethio-influenced numbers, and a number of down-to-earth grooves – of the sort you might find on a vintage funky 45! Titles include "Cave Of Brahma" and "Elephant" by The Sorcerers, "The Flip" by Cleveland Freckleton, "Cookie Jar" by The Reverend Barrington Stanley, "Thought Forms" by Ivan Von Engelberger's Asteroid, "Sucker Punch" by The Mandatory Eight, "What Are We Made Of" by The Cadets, and "London Station" by The Lamplighters. Four Flies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99
A great entry in this very groovy series – one that shifts the title a bit from previous volumes, and which also moves the music a bit too – but all while staying pretty darn funky! The set's got much more of a 70s soundtrack vibe than some of the other entries – loads of great keyboards, heavy basslines, riffing guitar, and other elements that are often used in ways that remind us of the bigger blacksploitation and crime/cop work of the decade – but cooler, hipper, and a lot more obscure! Titles include "La Professoressa Di Scienze Naturali" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Addio Ultimo Uomo" by Franco Godi, "Uragno Sulle Bermuda" by Stelvio Cipriani, "L'Occhio Dietro La Parete" by Pippo Caruso, "A Pugni Nudi" by Franco Bixio/Fabio Frizzi/Vince Tempera, "Le Evase" by Pippo Caruso, "La Sbandata" by Domenico Modugno & Gianni Oddi, "Afrika Erotika" by Alessandro Blonksteiner, "Nove Ospiti Per Un Delitto" by Carlo Savina, and "Maladolescenza" by Pippo Caruso. VariousFeel The Beat – Afro Funk ... CD
Big Sur (Italy), 2006. Used ... $8.99
An excellent modern take on the Afro Funk genre of the 70s – one that's filled with work by current groups who really get the classic sound right! As in the older work of Fela, there's plenty of percussion, keyboards, and horns in the mix here – often played straight and live, as on the older records, and with a solidly soulful sound that would be bound to make the great one proud! A few tracks go for a slightly more modern production approach, but always still keep the overall feel of the tune just right – and the set's one that you'll proudly put next to your older Afro Funk records, as proof that the sound lives on today, when placed in the right hands. Titles include "Mama Don't Want No Gun (Beatfanatic rmx)" by Kokolo, "NESTA 75" by Antibalas, "Diggin" by Ras, "Elephant" by Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, "Lagos Sound System" by Les Barons, "Un Tour Du Monde (inst mix)" by Love & Salt, "Cheney Lane" by Nostalgia 77, "The Name Of Fela Will Always Stand For Freedom" by The Jetsons with Jessica Lauren, "Take Time To Change Your Mind (Faze Action rmx)" by Quantic Soul Orchestra, and "See Line Woman" by Femm Nameless. VariousFuture World Funk – On The Run ... CD
Ether (UK), 2005. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent selection of globally-conscious grooves – served up by London DJs Cliffy and Russ Jones, a pair who have been opening up our ears to new music for years! Cliffy and Russ have a great knack for breaking down boundaries in their search of a tune – not in a way that makes everything sound the same, but in a mode that effortlessly picks and chooses the best from around the globe – bringing together a world of styles, rhythms, and instrumentation into one tightly crafted set. And don't expect any sort of cloying colonialism, or overly-simplified approach to the cultures here – because Cliffy & Russ never go for that – and apart from the silly photos used of the pair on the cover, they really just kick back and let you appreciate the music on its own, filled with joy and surprise in the rich diversity of cultures and grooves! 2CD set features 22 tracks in all – including "Allez Allez" by Eastenders, "Rudie No" by Two Cultures Clash, "Dum Maro Dum (Future World Funk Hackney hi fi rerub)" by Bollywood Brass Band, "Walk & Skank" by Jah Screechie, "Sharabbia" by G Samra, "Candela" by Kokolo, "Dub Up Your Fight" by Dry & Heavy, "Dia De Desfile" by Instituto, "Greedy Little Deggy" by Uroy with Tony Tuff, "Coquenteando" by Ska Cubano, and "Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil" by Bally Sagoo. VariousGet The Holy Funk – Jewel Spiritual Groovers ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $26.99
Fantastic funky gospel from the Jewel Records label – one of the few other companies besides Chess Records who could effortlessly mix spiritual and secular sounds! As with some of the best Chess/Checker gospel of this period, there's a groove here that feels more like mainstream soul of the period – no over-reaching choirs, or over-sold religion – and instead some wickedly sharp, soulful lyrics that are set to styles that are a mixture of deep soul, harmony soul, and plenty of righteous funk! So many of these nuggets were passed over back in the day – too gospel for soul collectors, and too funky for gospel fans – but they work together perfectly here in this overstuffed collection – put together with a perfect ear for all the best bits in the Jewel catalog. Titles include "This Little Light Of Mine" by Clarence Fountain, "Trouble's Brewin" by The Meditation Singers, "Mama Said Thank You" by Albertina Walker, "He'll See You Through" by Archie Dale & The Tones Of Joy, "Brotherly Love" by BPS Revolution, "Keep On Using Me Jesus" by Bill Moss & The Celestials, "The Right Road Now" by Keith Barrow, "No More Ghettoes In America" by Stanley Wilson, "Don't Forget The Bridge" by Mighty Sons Of Glory, "Heaven Help Us All" by Dorothy Norwood, and "Trying Times" by Ernest Franklin. VariousHeed The Call – 17 Of The Choicest Maori/Polynesian Soul, Funk, & Disco Tracks ... CD
Vostock (New Zealand), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
A little-heard assortment of rare funk tracks from the 70s – all music with a unique hybrid of styles, originally only issued for the small scene in Aotearoa – which most of us know as the nation of New Zealand! The music here draws on both American funk and south Pacific styles – and comes across in a way that's different than some of the more familiar Australian funk and soul of the same time – maybe more indie to that nation's major label polish – filled with the kinds of tracks that hardly need to answer to anyone in the mainstream – just the freaky folks on the dancefloor at a party! The tunes were recorded over the space of a decade, but almost all of them have a strong mid-70s vibe – pre-disco, but upbeat funk – with sharp instrumentation by musicians who'd clearly be comfortable playing other styles, but who often work here to back up a soulful singer in the lead. Titles include "A House For Sale" by Mark Williams, "You Can Dance" by Collision, "Voodoo Lady" by Dalvanius & The Fascinations, "That's The Kind Of Love I've Got For You" by The 1860 Band, "Mr Funky" by Inbetweens, "I Need Your Love" by Golden Harvest, "You Can Do It" by Tina Cross, "Disco Queen" by Mark Williams, "Don't Give Your Life Away" by The Pink Family, "There's A River" by Sonia & Skee, "Mr Music" by Ticket, "She's Knocking At My Door" by Johnny Rocco Band, "Sweet Inspiration" by The Yandall Sisters, "Total Man" by The Totals", and "Who Do We Think We're Fooling" by Larry Morris. ✨✧ VariousLovin Mighty Fire – Nippon Funk Soul Disco 1973 to 1983 ... CD
Ace/BGP (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $9.99
Disco grooves from a source you might not expect – the Japanese scene of the 70s, which was home to a surprisingly strong array of records that were perfect for the clubs! In retrospect, maybe the music's not such a surprise – given that 70s Japan was also a hotbed of electric fusion, and the kind of sharp instrumentation that provides the core to most of these tunes – wicked basslines, sweet keyboards, and funky drums that propel these tracks along in a wonderful way – even if you can't understand some of the Japanese lyrics over the top! In fact, many of these numbers are even more in the fusion or funk-inspired side of disco – less the crossover cuts with strings and big production, and more like the kind of American club tracks you might hear from Kudu Records or some of the other fusion labels. The package is proof that great sounds can be truly universal – and comes with detailed notes on the artists and scene at the time. Titles include "By By Session Band" by Lily, "Summer Champion" by Yuko Asano, "Dancin" by Junko Ohashi, "Rainbow Parade" by Masayoshi Takanaka, "Uragiri" by Mari Natuski, "Maboroshi No Hito" by Miyako Chaki, "Banana" by Kay Ishiguro, "Yashow Macashow" by Ebonee Webb, "Lovin Mighty Fire" by Nayoya Matsuko & Minako Yoshida, "Sentimental Hotel" by Rie Nkahara, and "Barato Yajuu" by Haruomi Hosono. Mellow soul heaven – and one of the greatest compilations of this style we've ever heard! This is exactly the kind of laidback, tripped-out soul we totally love – a host of rare ballads and love songs pulled from the 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – sometimes by groups who are better known for funky tracks, other times by overlooked harmony groups and solo singers who rival the greatness of east coast artists like The Moments or Whatnauts! Titles include "I Don't Think I'll Ever Love Another" by Darling Dears, "Slippin Around" by Thomas East, "Since You've Been Gone" by Little Janice, "Love" by Black Conspirators, "What Am I Waiting For" by Black Exotics, "Who Do You Think You're Fooling (part 1)" by Symphonic Four, "I'll Find A True Love" by Lee Bonds, "Young Girl" by Jazzie Cazzie & The Eight Sounds, and "Is It Me You Really Love" by Black Velvet. ✨✧ VariousMemphis 70 – The City's Funk & Soul In The Decade After Otis 1968 to 1977 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A mind-expanding look at Memphis soul – one that gets way past common cliches about the city and its music! There's a heavy dose of funk in the mix on most numbers here – a gritty, fuzzy approach to the music that seems slightly borrowed from the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – then mixed with some rougher, rootsier southern soul styles too! But other tracks take on a more sophisticated sound too – some of the righteous elements that hit Stax in the post-1968 period, especially as Isaac Hayes and David Porter were working on their own great solo work. Yet unlike Hayes and Porter, most of the artists here are much lesser-known – singers and groups who never charted big, but who got the chance to record for Memphis labels like XL, Stax, Select-O-Hits, and Sounds Of Memphis. CD features 20 tracks in all – and titles include "Dig It" by The Optimistics, "Mississippi Mud" by Smithsonian, "Two Paces Ahead Of Love" by Willie Walker, "Pullin" by The Minits, "It's Bump Time" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Blackrock Yeah Yeah" by Blackrock, "Keep The Faith" by Mel & Tim, "Watch Dog (alt)" by Barbara & The Browns, "Come What May" by John Gary Williams, "Strange Things" by Art Jerry Miller, "Shake" by The Ovations, "Tip Toeing" by Alvin Cash, "The Way Of Me" by Hannon, "Take A Giant Step" by LaCleve Milon, "Papa Killed A Chicken" by Willie Toliver, and "Don't Boom Boom" by Lillian Hale. Jazzman/Stones Throw, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Quite possibly one of the greatest funk compilations ever – and we're not just saying that because we're from the Midwest! The genius compilers at Jazzman spent years scouring the smaller cities of the American hinterlands – tracking down obscure musicians, long-lost labels, and nearly-gone master tapes – all to bring together 23 bits of rare funk that bristle with the same energy and excitement as the day they were first recorded! The package is incredible – not only filled with incredible tunes that somehow manage to push the boundaries and redefine our understanding of classic funk from the time, but also doing so in a package that's filled with liner notes that offer more information on the artists than probably their own mothers know! Plus, the set's also got some previously unissued numbers as well – making it a must-have for any funk fan, even if you've somehow managed to track down original copies of some of these choice bits! Titles include "Whip It" by The New Establishment In Soul, "Let's Do It Today (full version)" by The Us, "Pushin To The Top" by Markus Kelly & The Impassions, "Sissy Walk" by Billy Ball & The Upsetters, "Tell Her" by Fred Williams & The Jewels Band, "The Hatch" by The TMGs, "Boots Groove" by The Soul Tornados, "Po Boy's Dream" by Illinois Connection, "It's Not You For Me (live)" by Billy Joe Holloman, "Funky In Here" by Dayton Sidewinders, "Master Groove" by Henry Peters & The Imperials, and "A Day In The Life" by Chocolate Snow. Verve (UK), 1995. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
Although you might think this is just some cheapo major label compilation of fake funky tracks, it's actually a darn nice selection of material that spans the full range of all the Polygram related labels, and it even includes some killer unreleased tracks! Highlights include the previously unissued cut "Party Sex" by Roy Ayers, a great funky cut that ranks with his best; a rare long version of "To My Brother", one of our fave lost cuts by the JBs; "Use Me", also by the JBs, and issued only on 45; and "Monticello", a nice mellow groover by Monty Alexander, never before issued in the US! There's a total of 29 cuts on 2 CDs – with tracks that include "Superstition" and "Boatride" by Ahmad Jamal, "On Broadway" by Jess Roden, "Candido's Funk" by Candido, "Fickle Funk" by Chick Corea, "Water Torture" by Bennie Maupin, and "The Baron" by Chico Hamilton. Nice nice – and a wonderful collection of jazzy funk! CD

VariousNigeria Soul Power 70 – Afro Funk, Afro Rock, Afro Disco ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A fantastic collection of lesser-known gems from the 70s scene in Nigeria – music that's a great counterpart to better-remembered Afro Funk and soul from international giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! This set digs deep, and is a nicelly expanded version of a set that Soul Jazz issued years back as a limited edition 7" single box for Record Store Day – presented here with more music, and a detailed set of notes – really getting at the special scene that was taking place in Nigeria at the time, as the nation was rising to the top of the African scene with a fantastic criss-crossing of musical modes! There's definitely plenty of the funk promised in the title, and the "rock" is usually of the funky kind with great guitar work – and a few later cuts even pick up the pace with a bit of disco, but more in the fast-funk mode, and hardly the slick stuff of the American scene. Titles include "Africans Must Unite" and "Shake Hands" by Geraldo Pino, "We'll Get Home" by The Wings, "E Ye Ika Se" by Alhagi Prof Kollington Ayinala, "Kassa Kpa Sama Kpa" by Colomach, "Beware" by MFB, "You Are The One" by Tony Grey & The Ozimba Messengers, "Single Boy" by The Wings, "Sugar Baby" by Don Bruce & The Angels", "Power To The People" by Geraldo Pino, "Igba Alusi" by Original Wings, "Dance Of The Elephants" by Sonny Okosunds Ozziddi, and "Oba Erediauwa I" by Sonny Okosuns.
