We've loved the music of Bruno "Patchworks
" Hovart in all its many forms for years – but over time, this Voilaaa
project might well be our favorite – as it really gives Patchworks
a way to blend past and present, while also reaching out over the space of the globe! As before, there's plenty of elements borrowed from older African styles – but they're not just taken as style or flourish, as Patchworks
has a very collaborative spirit, and works with a bit array of guests who really expand the sound with their contributions – which are especially strong on the vocal tip! In a way, it's almost as if Bruno's revived that important 70s tradition in Paris – where musical talents would head north from older colonial scenes, and find great opportunities to experiment with new sounds in the studio. That's definitely the case here – on a great batch of tracks that include "Faut Pas", "Tu Mens Devant Moi", "Mbaal Mu Teer", "Bene Bene", "Assia", "Manu Ecoute CA", "Tenor Jam For Manu", "Francois Va Te Laver", and a remake of "Water Get No Enemy".
