En VogueBorn To Sing ... CD
Atlantic, 1990. Used ... $1.99
Wonderful work from the ladies who helped redirect R&B during the 90s! Sure, En Vogue were chart toppers for many years – but they also were some of the first female singers to really use the changes in hip hop production to work out a more solid approach to soul music – heavy beats at the bottom that make their music a perfect fit for a younger soul audience who were raised on equal parts hip hop – but more than enough of the class and care to still appeal to an older audience as well. The vocals are wonderful – strong and proud – and titles include the huge hits "Hold On" and "Lies" – plus "Time Goes On", "Strange", "You Don't Have To Worry", "Don't Go", "Luv Lines", "Part Of Me", and "Party". CD

En VogueFunky Divas (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1992. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99 36.99
Funky Divas is right – as this classic album by En Vogue is one that had the group really redefining the sound of girl group soul for a whole new generation! The girls do a wonderful job of blending together hip hop beats and warmer mainstream soul – at a level that marked one of the key bridges between R&B and hip hop in the 90s – almost making the group kind of a trans-generational healing force in African American music. After all these years the beats are still pretty great, and the vocals even better – and titles include "My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Free Your Mind", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It Up Turn It Loose", "Hooked On Your Love", "Love Don't Love You", "This Is Your Life", "Desire", "Hip Hop Lover", and "It Ain't Over Till The Fat Lady Sings". Teddi KingNow In Vogue ... CD
Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1955. Used ... $14.99
One of a number of great small group sessions done by singer Teddi King for the Storyville label – nicely relaxed, with backing from a septet that features Billy Taylor on piano, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Gene Quill on alto! The Storyville approach really brings out the best in Teddi's vocals – as the easy-going nature of the record has King sounding a bit more grown-up and adult than before – singing lines in a slightly sultry style, yet still with some of the bird-like notes heard on other albums. Taylor's piano adds a nice grounding to the record – and titles include "Old Folks", "Why Do You Suppose", "I'm In The Market For You", "You Hit The Spot", "Something To Live For", and "Like A Ship Without A Sail". ✨✧ Francoise HardyVogue Years ... CD
Vogue/Sony (UK), Mid 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A heavy helping of work from Francoise Hardy – a massive 2CD set that features 50 tracks from her best years in the 60s! The package spans the years 1962 to 1967 – a time when Hardy was ahead of the pack in the world of French female pop – not only setting new standards for other singers to follow, but also evolving her own music strongly over the years – moving from simple catchy modes at the start, to a headier brew of hipper sounds for the late 60s. Backings on the tracks are by Charles Blackwell, Johnny Harris, Mickey Baker, Jacques Denjean, Marcel Hendrix, and others – and the set also features English notes on Hardy's music, which is something you won't find in French collections of her work. Titles include "C'Est Le Passe", "Pas Gentille", "Et Meme", "Je Veux Qu'Il Revienne", "Mone Amie La Rose", "Nous Etions Amies", "J'Suis D'Accord", "Dans Le Monde Entier", "Le Temps De Souvenirs", "Tout Ce Qu'On Dit", "Il Se Fait Tard"," Je T'Aime", "Voila", "Si C'Est Ca", "Quel Mal Y A-T-Il A Ca", and "Rendez-Vous D'Automne". Daniel BechetSongs To My Father (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 36.99
A rare French album of funky fusion from drummer Daniel Bechet – dedicated to his father, the famous saxophonist Sidney Bechet – yet served up in a style that's nothing at all like the elder's musical legacy! Instead, Daniel works here in a warm blend of guitars and keyboards, especially the latter – as the set rolls along with a warm soulful vibe throughout, so that even the drums, while grooving, are wrapped up strongly as part of the overall sound! There's almost a Steely Dan level of perfection to the record – recalling the sound of the Hoops McCann project in the 80s – and titles include "Sweet Stuff", "Night Clouds", "Brother Jacques", "Saturday Night Flavour", "Don't Be Shy", "Astral Dance", and "Jacqueline's Mood". "Mona Call" is a fast-stepping number that's awash with all sorts of great Fender Rhodes lines – served up in that cool, chomping style Moulin does so well – and peppered with some great reed solos too! Vogue (Germany), 1964. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A real step forward for the amazing Francoise Hardy – a singer who was already great at the start, but who reaches out a bit more globally here – as she works with Brit arranger Charles Blackwell, in a mode that's got a bit of groovy 60s London in the mix! The tracks include many originals by Hardy, and a few by Blackwell as well – and the music has less of the acoustic guitar you'd hear on some of Francoise's other albums, and some fuller, bouncier backings that mix French chanson with some groovier 60s pop elements – all in a blend that's completely sublime for the lovely vocals of the lady. Titles include "Je Veux Qu'll Revienne", "Tu N'As Qu'Un Mot A Dire", "Et Meme", "Pars", "Pourtant Tu M'Aimes", "La Nuit Est Sur A Ville", "Pas Gentille", and "Mon Amie La Rose". ✨✧ MaajunVivre La Mort Du Vieux Monde ... CD
Vogue/Souffle Continu (France), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The only album ever issued by this incredible group from the French scene – a quintet of musicians who were really caught up in the powerful political energy of the post-1968 scene! The record is maybe even more revolutionary than some of the sets issued on artier labels like Saravah or BYG – as these guys are completely unbridled in their approach, and have no qualms about mixing psychedelic and folk elements, rock and art statements – leaping from track to track with a frenetic energy that's completely captivating all the way through! There's plenty of fuzzy guitar on the record, but that might give way to accordion, acoustic guitar, off-tune piano, or all sorts of other elements – used almost theatrically to match the spirit of the vocals. Titles include "Advertissment", "L'Orgasme", "Passage Cloute", "Le Crepuscule Des Alchimistes", and the side-long "La Longue Marche". CD

✨✧ Sahib ShihabCompanionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 ... CD
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Double-length brilliance from the mighty Sahib Shihab – a set that collects a number of killer 60s sessions with members of the Clarke Boland Big Band – all of them great! The small combo work here is amazing – hard-hitting modal jazz that matches, if not tops the best MPS/Saba sounds of the time – all produced to perfection with a really sharp edge, and a cutting approach to jazz that's gone onto inspired countless others in the current scene – including artists on Schema and Ricky-Tick Records, as well as most Japanese club jazz combos! But long before any of those cats started copping his groove, Sahib Shihab had it all totally together – a great ear for his own amazing solos on baritone and flute, and a way of hooking up with players like Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Benny Bailey on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. All players here were Shihab's partners in the Clarke Boland Big Band, and they use these small combo sessions to explore some great new ideas – stripped-down groovers that are heavy on rhythm, and really allow full expression from all the players involved. Titles include "Companionship", "Om Mani Padme Hum", "Bohemia After Dark", "Serenata", "Yah Yah Blues", "Balafon", "Talk Some Yak-ee Dak", "The Turk's Bolero", "CT + CB", "Jay Jay", "Stoned Ghosts", "Just Give Me Time", and "Dijdar". Vogue/Poll Winners Records (Spain), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare gem from Zoot Sims – a slightly obscure session issued in the early 60s by United Artists! Producer Alan Douglas put together the record – and as with most of the Douglas-produced albums of the period, the set's got that little "something extra" that makes it stand apart from a lot of other albums by the artist from the time. The whole package isn't too complicated, and just features Zoot blowing easy with a laidback (unnamed) quartet in what seems to be a live session. The solos come fast and free, and with a strong uncluttered sensibility that you don't often hear on other Sims records from the same period. Titles include "Zoot's Blues", "On the Alamo", "A Flat Blues", and "You Go To My Head". CD

A French group from the 70s, but one with a lead singer from Tunisia – the freaky-looking Mahmoud Ayari, who's got his feet up on the cover! The group are fiercely jamming – with a really heavy, driving percussion approach, and lots and lots of freaky guitar fuzz – often used in these really dark ways, which then seems to bring out even more darkness from Ayari's vocals – which act almost like loud calls to action than standard lyrics! A number of tunes are heavy on the instrumental section – which makes for even more great focus on the excellent guitar – and titles include "To Where I Belong", "Lot Of Things", "Explosion", "We All Come & Go", and "My Sorrow" – plus two tunes with really great special effects from Jean Pierre Massiera – "Pop Orbite" and "Pop Pull Hair". Fantastic pop from The Matchmakers – a group who only went by that name on some of their records – as they were more of a studio project from UK producers Mark Wirtz and Kris Ife, and also issued work as The Guards, Fickle Finger, Krimson Kake, Happy Confusion, Cellophane Mop, Father's Brown, and Astronaut Alan & The Planets! Yet despite all those many names – which all appear here in the credits for the songs – the group had a unified sound in their unabashed love of a good hook, and the genius production they received on their tunes – often in that groundbreaking style you'll know from other Wirtz work of the 60s, with a compressed quality that's a strong precursor to the direction UK rock production would take in the 70s – peppered with just a touch of the American bubble gum pop sound of the time. A legendary album from saxophonist Sahib Shihab – a record that's gone onto become the birth of all things modal and club jazz in the current scene! Shihab always sounded great, no matter what the setting, but there was definitely something magical going on with this session – a one-of-a-kind energy that made his baritone and flute work sound incredibly soulful, searching, and searing – set up with a tight small combo that includes Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – a hip slice of the Clarke Boland Big Band that works beautifully together! Every tune here is wonderful, and you're bound to recognized a few covered or sampled classics over the years – on cuts that include "Seeds", "Peter's Waltz", "Who'll Buy My Dream", "Another Samba", "Jay Jay", "Uma Fita De Tres Cores", and "Mauve". Vogue/Sonorama (Germany), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime sounds from the legendary Jonny Teupen – the harpist best known for his freaky sides for MPS, heard here in an earlier set of bossa nova tunes! The approach is quite unique, and really warmly wonderful – Jonny's sweetly lyrical lines on harp, mixed with gentle bossa rhythms, and topped with cool vocals that often have a breezy, scatting sort of sound! Rob Pronk plays piano on the set, and also sings a bit too – and the female vocals are handled by Blanche Birdsong, who's got a nicely sweet sound. The great Shake Keane is also on the album, playing a bit of flugelhorn – although the notes credit him as Leonard Blech – and the whole thing was produced by German groovemeister Berry Lipman! Titles include "La Mucura", "Mody", "Jonny & Blanche", "Linda", "Jonny's Harp", "Sambleebloo", "No Name Samba", and "Ding". CD

✨✧ Don ByasDon Byas ... LP
GNP, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff from this legendary tenorist – and some of his best recordings! The album's a US issue of sides that Byas cut for French Vogue, when he was living in exile in Paris. The notes on the back seem to indicate that the record was cut in the early 70s, but to us, the vintage sounds much older, and the album feels a lot more like classic tenor ballad material. Titles in clude "Tenderly", "Lover", "Sweet Lorraine", "I'm In The Mood For Love", and "April In Paris". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout hole.)

✨✧ Marc 4Psych Jazzy Beat Of I Marc 4 ... CD
Black Cat (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Marc 4 were one of the all-time great studio combos of the Italian scene of the early 70s – and they cut an amazing amount of fantastic music that was used in obscure Italian films and TV shows at the time. This set's one of the best we've ever seen to collect their work – and it brings together 24 stunning tracks that very ably show the band's talent to mix together funk, jazz, and various groove and psyche influences that were running through the early 70s vogue for hip soundtrack work. Plenty of great guitar and organ riffing, and 100% groovy all the way through! Titles include "Rita", "Catherine", "Max", "Berkey 70", "Inchiesta Sulla Mafia", "Distortion Mind", "Luna", "Key Board", "Happy Beat", "The Sound", "Boxes", and "Beat Generation". Very nice! CD

✨✧ Elvis CostelloThis Years Model ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most important early records by Elvis Costello – and maybe one of a small handful that we'd deem completely essential out of his massive catalog over the decades! Elvis and The Attractions are in perfect form here – coming across with all the biting energy of the punk generation, but not punk at all – and instead finding a way to open the door to a global audience, especially American, that some of his contemporaries weren't able to reach at the time – thanks to some incredible songs that even Elvis might not have thought would go on to become pop and rock standards over the years! Titles include "This Year's Girl", "Hand In Hand", "Chelsea", "Lip Service", "Little Triggers", "Pump It Up", "No Action", "Lipstick Vogue", and "Living In Paradise". US version also includes "Radio Radio" and "Big Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Remi Gassmann/Oskar SalaElectronics – Electronic Music For The Ballet/Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape ... LP
Westminster, 1961. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Its lowest frequency is 15.4 cycles per second, its highest fundamental 3951 cps, the highest harmonis or overtone 15806 cps. It can blow out speakers, traumatize cats and arouse the landlord." Coloursound Library/Be With (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sweet 80s take on the sound library style – one that has both artists in the lead handling plenty of keyboards over basslines – all with the lean instrumental style that was really coming into vogue at the time! As with most sound library records, the approach here is very well-suited to broadcast or cinematic themes – and there's a really nice variety of work throughout, often with the kind of vivid, melodic style that always made the Coloursound library so great! Titles include "Riding On A Sunbeam", "Fly Me To The Sun", "Solar Heating", "Birth Of A Butterfly", and "Osmosis" by Andre Mikola – and "Dhamma" and "Magic Scenery" by Andrzej Marko.
