En VogueBorn To Sing (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Cherry Red (UK), 1990. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Wonderful work from the ladies who helped redirect R&B during the 90s! Sure, En Vogue were chart toppers for many years – but they also were some of the first female singers to really use the changes in hip hop production to work out a more solid approach to soul music – heavy beats at the bottom that make their music a perfect fit for a younger soul audience who were raised on equal parts hip hop – but more than enough of the class and care to still appeal to an older audience as well. The vocals are wonderful – strong and proud – and titles include the huge hits "Hold On" and "Lies" – plus "Time Goes On", "Strange", "You Don't Have To Worry", "Don't Go", "Luv Lines", "Part Of Me", and "Party". 2 CD version is overflowing with bonus tracks – including "Waitin On You", "Silent Nite (Holiday edit)", "Mover", "National Anthem", "You Don't Have To Worry (radio)", "Lies (avant garde edit)", "You Don't Have To Worry (UK edit)", "Hold On (ext version)", "Lies (extended avant garde)", "Strange (house rmx)", "Silent Nite (long holiday mix)", "Hold On (hip hop rmx)", "Time Goes On (dance rmx)", "Lies (Kwame's bone age rmx)", "Hold On (dub)", "Lies (new jack rmx)", and "You Don't Have To Worry (lo cal mix)". En VogueFunky Divas ... CD
Atlantic/East West, 1992. Used ... $2.99
Funky Divas is right – as this classic album by En Vogue is one that had the group really redefining the sound of girl group soul for a whole new generation! The girls do a wonderful job of blending together hip hop beats and warmer mainstream soul – at a level that marked one of the key bridges between R&B and hip hop in the 90s – almost making the group kind of a trans-generational healing force in African American music. After all these years the beats are still pretty great, and the vocals even better – and titles include "My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Free Your Mind", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It UpTurn It Loose", "Hooked On Your Love", "Love Don't Love You", "This Is Your Life", "Desire", "Hip Hop Lover", and "It Ain't Over Till The Fat Lady Sings". Serge BlennerLa Vogue ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $16.99
A really cool keyboard set from Serge Blenner – issued during the glory days of the German Sky Records label, but with a vibe that's a bit different than most of their other releases! Blenner works on an assortment of keyboard and electronic sources – but with a sound that's maybe more Sheffield than Hamburg, especially as there's some great use of darkness and distortion in the mix – less clean electronics than some of his Sky contemporaries, which creates a very cool, moody sound throughout! The album has eight instrumental tracks – each a numbered "Phrase" by Serge. CD

Teddi KingNow In Vogue ... LP
Storyville, 1955. Very Good+ ... $49.99
One of a number of great small group sessions done by singer Teddi King for the Storyville label – nicely relaxed, with backing from a septet that features Billy Taylor on piano, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Gene Quill on alto! The Storyville approach really brings out the best in Teddi's vocals – as the easy-going nature of the record has King sounding a bit more grown-up and adult than before – singing lines in a slightly sultry style, yet still with some of the bird-like notes heard on other albums. Taylor's piano adds a nice grounding to the record – and titles include "Old Folks", "Why Do You Suppose", "I'm In The Market For You", "You Hit The Spot", "Something To Live For", and "Like A Ship Without A Sail". Gigi Gryce/Art FarmerBebop In Paris Vol 2 ... CD
Vogue/BMG (France), 1953. Used ... $18.99
50s modern jazz at its best – served up in a set of rare 1953 recordings by a young Art Farmer and Gigi Gryce! The tracks on the set easily rival the greatness of both Farmer and Gryce's key sides for Prestige during the period – recorded with a freshness that still holds up strongly even 50 years later, and which represents some of the best larger group work of the post-swing generation! Quincy Jones had a hand in some of the work, as he, Gryce, and Farmer were all playing together with Lionel Hampton at the time – and the tunes on the set have a style that's as swingingly soulful as it is modern. 7 of the tracks were recorded under the name of the Gigi Gryce Orchestra, and 3 others under Art Farmer's New Jazz Stars – but the work has a very unified feel, with shared players that include Jimmy Cleveland, Anthony Ortega, Clifford Solomon, Henri Renaud, and Quincy Jones. Titles include "Serenade To Sonny", "Evening In Paris", "Purple Shades", "Paris The Beautiful", "La Rose Noire", "Anne Marie", and "Strike Up The Band". CD features a few alternate takes. CD

Don Rendell & Bobby JasparRencontre A Paris ... LP
Swing/Vogue, 1955. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A wonderful example of the openness of the Paris scene in the 50s – and a record that's co-led by Belgian Bobby Jaspar and British Don Rendell – both of whom play tenors on the set! The rest of the group includes Sacha Distel on guitar, David Amram on cornet, Maurice Vander on piano, Guy Pedersen on bass, and Mac Kak (a nom-du-date?) on drums. Tracks are lean and swinging, with very strong solos – and it's great to hear Jaspar blowing on tenor in such a wonderful setting, as the album seems to give him more of an edge than some of his more composed albums. Title sinclude "King Fish", "Pot Luck", "Olympia", and "Dave's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Ry-Co JazzDansons Avec Le Ry-Co Jazz ... LP
Vogue/Radio Martiko (Belgium), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $22.99
An early killer by Congolese combo Ry-Co Jazz – a set that's got as much Latin in the mix as the jazz in their name – and which serves up both with a lean style that's even groovier than some of the later work by the group! The album captures the combo at the height of their early fame – in the midst of recording lots of short EP releases that burned like a fire across the West African scene – where the group's reinterpretation of Latin American styles was part of a huge musical trend that would have impact for years to come! The work here is great – lots of jazzy charanga, mambo, cha cha, and rumba tunes – with tracks that include "Bina Charanga", "Zaina", "Maria De Mi Amor", "El Casel De Ry-Co", "Mawa", "Habiba Moussa", and "Mambo Ryco". Sahib ShihabCompanionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Double-length brilliance from the mighty Sahib Shihab – a set that collects a number of killer 60s sessions with members of the Clarke Boland Big Band – all of them great! The small combo work here is amazing – hard-hitting modal jazz that matches, if not tops the best MPS/Saba sounds of the time – all produced to perfection with a really sharp edge, and a cutting approach to jazz that's gone onto inspired countless others in the current scene – including artists on Schema and Ricky-Tick Records, as well as most Japanese club jazz combos! But long before any of those cats started copping his groove, Sahib Shihab had it all totally together – a great ear for his own amazing solos on baritone and flute, and a way of hooking up with players like Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Benny Bailey on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. All players here were Shihab's partners in the Clarke Boland Big Band, and they use these small combo sessions to explore some great new ideas – stripped-down groovers that are heavy on rhythm, and really allow full expression from all the players involved. Titles include "Companionship", "Om Mani Padme Hum", "Bohemia After Dark", "Serenata", "Yah Yah Blues", "Balafon", "Talk Some Yak-ee Dak", "The Turk's Bolero", "CT + CB", "Jay Jay", "Stoned Ghosts", "Just Give Me Time", and "Dijdar". Vogue/Long Hair (Germany), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic group from the German scene at the start of the 70s – a crucially overlooked act who only ever cut this one album – a really great set that sparkles even more from production by Conny Plank! Nosferatu are part of a big wave of progressive German acts of the time – but they also still hold onto a lot of soul and jazz elements that influenced the beat generation – so that their music here has some really romping drums, lots of searing organ, and even some great jazzy flute – all of which infuses the long tracks with a sort of energy that really keeps things moving – and which is different than some of the more freewheeling jazz rock of other Kraut groups of the period. The lead singer's got a nice edge – almost a mod London 1967 vibe – and titles include "Found My Home", "Willie The Fox", "Vanity Fair", "Work Day", and "No 4". CD

Westminster, 1961. Very Good ... $9.99
Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Its lowest frequency is 15.4 cycles per second, its highest fundamental 3951 cps, the highest harmonis or overtone 15806 cps. It can blow out speakers, traumatize cats and arouse the landlord." Joe MaphisAmazing Joe Maphis – King Of The Strings ... CD
Starday/Gusto, Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.99
Joe Maphis was definitely the king of the strings back in the day – a guitarist who was so tight, he had to play a double-necked electric just to give his fingers enough to do – something that wouldn't come into vogue much later, until the 70s arena rock guitarists started to showcase the instrument! Yet Joe was never as overstated as those guys – because while deft, he's also strongly focused on melody and timing – never needing to show off too much, but still really blowing us away with his playing on a record like this – an amazing showcase to his straight-ahead skills on the guitar, as he works here on an early Mosrite model, designed by Joe himself. Titles include "Hot Rod Guitar", "Double Neck Boogie", "Coffee Break", "Scalping The Indians", "Fiddlin On The Guitar", and "A Little Bit Of Travis". CD

A musical document of an amazing moment in the New York scene – the late 80s/early 90s wave of vogue balls – which were almost a collision of club culture with high fashion! There was a particularly rich gender-bending element to the vogue scene – and the music that accompanied it was a key part of that activity – tracks that had already risen to fame in crossover clubs from previous years, taken to new heights by DJs who provided music along with the voguing activity – in a great array of grooves from the disco years through early house music, brought together in ways that made 80s musical evolution make a heck of a lot of sense!
