Vis-A-VisBest Of Vis-A-Vis In Congo Style ... LP
We Are Busy Bodies (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Really fantastic grooves from this legendary Congolese combo – a group who've got a different spin than some of their 70s contemporaries, given the way the use lots of organ lines next to the percussion on the songs! The instrument often gets this melodic flow going with the rhythms – similar to the way that guitar might be used in highlife, but with a spookier feel that's really wonderful – almost other-worldly at times, given some of the phrasing – and a perfect match for the raw percussion, and group-sung vocals on the tunes! The whole thing's great – and the set features long tunes that include "Vic San Bra", "Asalam Malekum", "Medofa Pa", "Yere Fre Adofo", and "Nsenkeka Adooso". LP, Vinyl record album

Vis-A-VisDi Wo Ho Ni ... LP
We Are Busy Bodies (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Beautiful bubbling grooves from Vis-A-Vis – a group who've got a very special way with a highlife rhythm, as you'll hear on this classic album from the late 70s! The percussion, bass, and rhythm guitar all percolate together beautifully – with a magical sort of flow that makes the group one of the best proponents of the style, one that doesn't let up at all when horns step into the mix – as the instruments have a way of sliding in, but without stopping the action – all while the vocals trade back and forth in a very organic, almost conversational sort of style. The album features four tracks in all, but feels more like one extended piece – with titles that include "Di Wo Ho Ni", "Obaa Mansa", "Maye Nsusuan Nsuo", "Minhyia Na Mahawehwe". We Are Busy Bodies (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
A record with a really wonderful groove – bubbling bass next to riffing guitar lines – a bit funky at times, but as a warm hybrid with more familiar highlife modes! The album's a key testament to the strengths of this 70s group from Ghana – filled with lively vocal interplay between leader Isaac Yeboah and the rest of the group, and graced throughout by the chromatic charms of guitarist Sammy Red Cropper – who may well be to the Ghanaian scene what Steve Cropper was to Booker T & The MGs and Memphis! Side one features the extended "Odo Gu Ahoroo" – and side two features shorter tracks "Odo Fever", "Ebeto Dabi", "Abofra Ketewa", and "Sunsum Me Gu Mu". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ K FrimpongK Frimpong & Vis A Vis ... LP
Ofori Brothers/Hot Casa (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic guitar work from K Frimpong – and plenty of other fantastic sounds too – all rolled up in his unique blend of Afro funk and high-life – served up here on four nice long tracks! There's vocals on the record, but the guitar and rhythms are what really drive the train – especially in some places as the vocals almost feel like exclamatory passages in response to the sharpness of the instrumentation! Things move pretty darn quickly on most cuts – which makes the guitar work even more amazing, especially in comparison to conventional highlife – on titles that include "Abrubo", "Acheumpomaa", "Ohere A Oda Apakaw Mu", and "Aboagyewaa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful pressing – mastered at The Carvery, and served up in a nice heavy cover!)

Astor PiazzollaCollaboraciones 1975 to 1985 ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $16.99
Some really fantastic collaborations from the legendary Astor Piazzolla – done at a time when the Argentine musician was being seen as way more than just a bandoneon player – and instead the fully creative genius whose experiments really helped shape the music of the 70 at a global scale! That's definitely the case here, as the set brings together creations of Piazzolla that involve singers from a number of different global scenes – each with a different style, to which the music adapts wonderfully! The set leads off with a single that Piazzolla recorded with Brazilian singer Ney Matogrosso in 1975 – the fantastic tunes "As Ilhas" and "1964", which might be some of the most compelling work that Ney cut at the time. Next are five great tracks with French singer Georges Moustaki – including "On L'Appelle Folie", "La Memoire", and "Faire Cette Chanson". Marie Paul Belle follows with the wonderful "Je Vis Ma Mort A Chaque Instant" – followed by two tracks with German singer Narrenlider, "Maria Magdalena" and "Der Alte Pierre". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyPhenix ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleySomethin' Else (RVG Remaster Edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $6.99
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style on alto sax – also different than the sound of his brother Nat, who was Adderley's more frequent partner on records. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", "Autumn Leaves", "Love For Sale", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark". CD

The lineup's nice and jazzy, too – and features lots of tenor work from Timo Lassy, next to vibes, trumpet, guitar, and warm lines on both Hammond organ and Wurlitzer piano – all with a feel that's part funk, part soundtrack – yet served up in the best Schema way, which means that things go far past just being a retro rehash of the past! Eden AhbezEden's Island (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Del-Fi/Everland (Austria), Early 60s. New Copy ... $23.99 About June 22, 2022
An incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". CD

✨✧ AirtoSeeds On The Ground – The Natural Sounds Of Airto ... LP
Buddah, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $49.99
Easily one of the greatest records that Brazilian percussionist Airto ever recorded – a stunning blend roots and jazzy currents, and a set that follows strongly off his work in the group Quarteto Novo! The set's got contributions from one of his key partners in that combo – reedman Hermeto Pascoal – and like Pascoal's material at this point, the whole thing is maybe one of the most perfect realizations of the musical vision that Airto was going for! There's none of the tighter, more polished sounds of his later fusion years – and this is the record that will show you just why his arrival on the American scene made such big waves at the time. Flora Purim also sings on the record – and titles include "Andei", "On Sonho", Papo Furado", and "O Galho da Rosiera". LP, Vinyl record album

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... LP
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99 48.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". ✨✧ Jan AkkermanTabernakel ... LP
Atco, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $5.99
Guitarist Jan Akkerman bridges many worlds here – deftly stepping between spare acoustic guitar modes and some much more dynamic electric ones – but all with a sense of care and vision that really makes the record come together! The set begins with a few themes from John Dowland, updated by Akkerman, but still played with an ancient sort of vibe – one that leads into some very cool fusion moments that mix centuries-old aesthetics with the modern – creating a sense of anachronism that really keeps things interesting. Gene Orloff handled some of the larger arrangements, but the focus is always on Akkerman's deft work on the guitar – and titles include "Britannia", "House Of The King", "Javeh", "Lammy", and "A Fantasy". Aksak MaboulUn Peu De L'Ame Des Bandits (with bonus CD) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 18.98
One of our favorite mixing of modes from the old school – a tremendous second album from the legendary Aksak Maboul! The record mixes arty playfulness with some rootsier elements – bits of Eastern instrumentation, jazz, improvisation, and even some post-punk elements – all in a way that makes for one of the most creative recordings of its time – a set that easily provides key inspiration for more recent genre-crossing acts like this! There's a bit of Y or Ze Records whimsy at times – but the end result is much deeper, and much more compelling– as you'd expect from a group that features Fred Frith on guitar, Chris Cutler on drums, Marc Hollander and Michel Berkmans on reeds, and Denis Van Hecke on a range of cool cellos! Each tune has a slightly different flavor, but there's still a really unified feel to the record too – one of those European projects that comes together like nothing you'd hear from the US. Titles include "Geistige Nacht", "A Modern Lesson", "Palmiers En Pots" and "Cinema". LP, Vinyl record album

Tenorist Rodrigo Amado is at the head of a really great group here – a quartet that can come on fierce when needed, but also really work together to build up their sound slowly – improvising in ways that are open, yet feel structured too – especially on the moments that let the sound resonate between the players, find some ground of its own, then provide a perfect platform upon which individual members can build! The record is one that really elevates our appreciation of both musicians, and which will have us certainly keeping an ear out for lots more in the future – and Amado especially is really emerging as a bold-toned tenorist with a strong current of soul. ArtisticsI Want You To Make My Life Over ... LP
Brunswick, 1969. Sealed ... $13.99
One of The Artistics' most beautiful albums for Brunswick – and the one that includes the title song that was perhaps their greatest single! "I Want You To Make My Life Over" is a classic bit of Chicago soul – done at a level that really sums up all the sophisticated changes the city had brought to the music at the start of the 70s – and served up with cool vibes, great vocals, and a heavenly production style that wraps up the harmonies tightly together, and floats them over the top with nary a wrinkle! That cut kicks off the album, and things only just get better and better – on titles that include "Just Another Heartache", "Nothing But Heartaches", and "Trouble Heartache & Pain" (hey, these guys had a lot of heartache!) – plus "Out In The Country", "Sugar Cane", and "What The World Needs Now". Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. Titles include "Gimme Your Lovin", "The Love I Never Had", "Visions", "Keep It Comin", "Stand Up", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "We Got It Together", and "Being In Love With You Is So Much Fun". CD features a bonus track – "Stand Up (single version)". CD

Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant pairing of free jazz forces – the Chicago-based School Days group of Ken Vandermark, and the groundbreaking Atomic combo from the Nordic jazz underground! The players here are all very like-minded, and fold together beautifully – in an octet lineup that features reeds from Ken Vandermark and Frekerik Ljungkvist, trumpet from Magnus Broo, trombone from Jeb Bishop, piano from Havard Wiik, vibes from Kjell Nordeson, bass from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, and drums from Paal-Nilssen Love! Both Flaten and Love would become frequent collaborators in Chicago over the years – but this set captures the meeting of the groups in a very fresh way – a double-length set that's all original material – with titles that include "W Meets A", "Transparent Taylor", "Ink Worm", "Kerosene", "Conjugations" and "Dog Days". Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
No Mirage here – as the album's got a presence that's impossible to deny – a solid, soulful uttering from this key Chicago combo of the 70s! The group's led by reedman Ari Brown – better known for his later avant work – and they've got a wicked blend of keyboards and horns with lots of complicated touches, played out over funky rhythms that are completely mindblowing! The great Ken Chaney plays keyboards, and in addition to Brown's reeds, the set also features trumpet from Frank Gordon, trombone from Steve Galloway, and bass from Rufus Reid – plus cool percussion from Arlington Davis and Drasheer Khalid. Most cuts are instrumental, and recorded beautifully – but one number, "The Ultimate Frontier", also features vocals from Anita Jefferies. Other cuts include "Slinky", "Mirage", "Just a Little Peace", and "March On". LP, Vinyl record album

Kevin AyersRainbow Takeaway ... LP
Harvest/EMI, 1978. Near Mint- ... $22.99
An overlooked album from Kevin Ayers – a record that's a bit out of time, given all the changes that were taking place in the UK scene – but which still has Ayers doing all those wonderful things that made his solo career so great! The tunes are fantastic – filled with unusual images, and that sense of removed wit that Kevin always had, and which always made him so far less indulgent than the rest of the prog generation. And while the cover and some of the production almost hint at an AOR approach, the whole thing instead is hiding with a more unique vision underneath – maybe in the way that Phil Manzanera could do the same on his late 70s albums. Like those records, there's a lot of elements here that are hard to compare to anything else – but in a good way, as that's always been the charm of Ayers. Titles include "Ballad Of A Salesman Who Sold Himself", "Rainbow Takeaway", "View From The Mountain", "Goodnight Goodnight", and "Hat Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerRevelations – The Complete ORTF 1970 Fondation Maeght Recordings (4CD set) ... CD
INA/Anagram, 1970. New Copy 4CD ... On May 13, 2022 (delayed)
An incredible revamping of some of the most important material recorded by Albert Ayler in the years before his too-soon death – a package that adds in over two hours of new music to the original three volume Fondation Maeght recordings – which were usually issued in low-budget packages without the care that this set receives! Ayler is fantastic here – very spiritual, and bridging the gap between his early material for ESP and his later work on Impulse – less of the experiments of the studio sets of those later years, and more of the searing longform improvisation that he could deliver at his best! The group features wonderful work from Mary Parks (Mary Maria) on soprano sax, plus Call Cobbs on piano, Steve Tintweiss on bass, and Allen Blairman on drums – and Parks delivers a sublime vocal on a version of "Music Is the Healing Voice Of The Universe". Ayler blows both tenor and soprano – and the set features a whopping 29 tracks, recorded on July 25 and 27 in 1970 – titles that include "Spirits Rejoice", "Thank God For Women", "Revelations", "Holy Family", "A Man Is Like A Tree", "Zion Hill", "Truth Is Marching In", "Love Cry", "Ghsots", "Speaking In Tongues", "Heart Love", "Island Harvest", "Masonic Inborn", and a few versions of "Revelations". Far Out (UK), 1996. Used ... $24.99
Surprisingly great recording by this legendary Brazilian fusion group. Surprising because it's so good, and waaay better than anything they've done in the past 10 or 15 years. The sound is nice and stripped down, and resembles their good early work much more than it does their more recent stuff. Joe Davis recorded this in Rio last year, and he took a lot of care with the recording. The group sounds tight and jazzy, and they lay down some great electric Brazilian grooves with lots of great electric piano. Features a few remakes – like "Jazz Carnival" and "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" – plus some nice originals. CD

Alice Babs & Duke EllingtonSerenade To Sweden ... LP
Telestar (Sweden), 1963. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A beautiful and rare recording – both for singer Alice Babs, and Ellington himself! The session was cut in Paris in 1963 – and it's a moody, intimate album that features Duke backing up Alice with arrangements that are quieter and more subtle than those used with most other Ellington-related singers. Alice is extremely great on the set – and often sings in weird wordless vocals – not really scatting, but more of a horn based-style that's very icy and cool. The whole thing's great – much greater even than the sum of its two famous parts – and titles include "Serenade To Sweden", "Stoona", "La De Doody Doo", "Strange Visitor", "Come Sunday", "Babsie", and "Untitled Lullaby". Dave Bailey SextetGetting' Into Somethin' ... LP
Epic, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Heavy duty hardbop – one of three amazing Epic Records sessions cut by drummer Dave Bailey! Dave didn't ever cut many sessions as a leader – but when he did, they really cooked hard – with a quality level and sharpness of vision that easily rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige Records at the time! In fact, this album would have been right at home on either imprint – a smoking session of soulful hardbop, with very long songs that allow plenty of room for solos by players who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Horace Parlan on piano – who are all in the group with Dave, alongside bassist Peck Morrison. There's a nicely unbridled feel to the whole set – a real "something extra" that's always made the album a treasure – and titles include the side-long 17 minute "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". Chet BakerChet On Poetry ... LP
Novus/Mono Jazz (Italy), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Completely evocative late life work from Chet Baker – one of the last albums he ever recorded, and a set that shows just how much Baker kept evolving in the later years of his career! Given some of the personal troubles that plagued Chet over the decades, there's sometimes a thought out there that he was a weaker version of himself at this time – but that's definitely not the case, as Baker really shifted his sound and style to accommodate some of his challenges, at a level that maybe made the music even more powerful than some of his music from years before! Some of the best moments here feature contributions from key musical partner of the 80s Nicola Stilo, who uses flute, guitar, and piano in these light ways while Chet's soloing with this strong, fluid vibe that's a real surprise – gentle, but extremely powerful. A few cuts bring in a bit of keyboards, and Chet sings a bit – but his best "singing" here is through his trumpet, which is still a hell of a voice in jazz. Titles include "Chet's Blues", "Waiting For Chet", "The Party Is Over", "With Sadness", "Deep Arabesques", and "Like The Precedent" – plus a lovely reading of the Elvis Costello tune "Almost Blue". Paddle Wheel/King (Japan), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $44.99 49.99 About July 15, 2022
Late work from Chet Baker, but great work too – and sounds that have Baker returning to an incredibly strong sense of force in the final year of his life! We love some of Chet's records from earlier in the decade, but many of those are a bit laidback – kind of a beautiful exploration of space and lanquidity. But here, Baker's got a hell of a fire – blowing crisp notes that are given a wonderful drive from a quartet that features Harold Danko on piano, Hein Van De Geyn on bass, and John Engels on drums! Chet sings a bit, but the real showcase is his trumpet work – superb, and maybe still at the top of the range of trumpeters working at the time on the planet – on titles that include "Portrait In Black & White", "Stella By Starlight", "For Minors Only", and "My Funny Valentine" – plus a nice reading of the Elvis Costello tune "Almost Blue". Introspective improvisations from saxophonist Dylan Baldi and drummer Jayson Gerycz – both members of the band Cloud Nothings, but working here in a much more free jazz-styled setting! Side one features an extended track titled "Hermit Thrush/Vat Of Oil" – really building up nicely at first with open, almost rambling work on the drum kit – matched with saxophone work from Baldi that slowly builds, still in soulful spiritual territory for the most part – occasionally hitting some wilder, raspier moments – almost in an Arthur Doyle sort of way. Side two has some more subtle sonic interplay on "Frog Congress At Dawn", a very organic track – and ramps things up with more freewheeling improv on "The Holy Retrievers In Transit". Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

Drummer Chad Taylor is one of the most versatile performers we know – a drummer who can move easily between a variety of different settings, always finding the right touch for the right moment! Yet here, Taylor may be in one of his most unique settings to date – improvising on two long duets with Rosa Barba – an artist and filmmaker, and a musician who combines her talents here by playing cello, but with a celluloid bow – literally making music with the texture of film, as she slowly bows her instrument on these long, spacious lines that are matched with equally careful, sonorous work from Taylor on the drums! Chad is much more sonic than rhythmic throughout – really sounding wonderful as he brings all these new colors to his palette – on the two long improvisations on the set. CD

Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... Just Sold Out!
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

Gary BartzLibra/Another Earth ... CD
Milestone, 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Early soul jazz brilliance from a young Gary Bartz – music that pre-dates his Ntu Troup, and his work with Larry Mizell! Libra is fantastic early work from Gary – and probably his rarest record ever! The album was cut at a time when the young Bartz was first coming to prominence in the hip late 60s soul jazz group of Max Roach – and Bartz's playing at the time is a perfect model of mid-Coltrane searching with some of the tighter sides of soul jazz that were being forged at labels like Blue Note by players like Hank Mobley or Lee Morgan. The record's a masterpiece of youthful soulful energy – and the group includes Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Richard Davis on bass, Albert Dailey on piano, and Billy Higgins on drums, all players who are perfectly matched to fit Bartz's stridently creative vision. His solos on alto are impeccable – some of the most meaningful we've ever heard on the instrument from the time – and the album's a great one all the way through! Titles include "Air & Fire", "Eastern Blues", "Libra", "Freedom Of The Day", and "Cabin In The Sky". Another Earth is amazing too – one of the first that Gary Bartz ever cut – done during a time when he'd been working with Max Roach and a super-hip group of younger soul jazz players who would go onto shape the sound of the 70s. Bartz leads a group that includes Stanley Cowell, Freddy Waits, Charles Tolliver, Pharoah Sanders, and Reggie Workman – and the music sounds like it was lifted from one of the best albums on Strata East from the 70s. There's no funk, no vocals, no weird rhythms – just pure spiritual jazz, played to perfection, and filled with a creative vitality that most of the players had lost a few years later. Tracks include the album-side "Another Earth", plus "Dark Nebula", "UFO", and "Perihelion & Aphelion". Note: CD omits the track "Disjunction" from Libra – due to space restrictions. CD

Nothing basic about this album by Count Basie – as the album has the legend working for the MPS label – whose own big band scene he really helped inspire! The band here is really dynamic – working with great arrangements from Chico O'Farrill, who's inherent sense of groove really gets things going from the start – which creates plenty of energy for the horn work by players who include Bobby Plater and Marshall Royal on alto, Eric Dixon on flute and tenor, Eddie Lockjaw Davis on additional tenor, Grover Mitchell on trombone, and Oscar Brashear and Sonny Cohn on trumpets. Basie himself plays piano – with that legendary punctuated style that's still quite strong at this point – and titles include "M Squad", "Blues In My Heart", "Sweet Lorraine", "Red Roses For A Blue Lady", "As Long As I Live", and "I've Got The World On A String". Roulette, 1957. Very Good ... $24.99
One of THE seminal Basie albums of all time – and a masterful pairing between the Count and arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti has an amazing ear for the Basie groove, and he works here to re-fit the overall sound of the group with a tighter, more fluid approach – one that ensured that they'd be alive and booming well into the 60s. The Hefti touch is one that's slightly lighter than the Basie of before – one that assumes the bump at the bottom, but never overdoes it – and instead almost uses the sound of no sound at all to carry the rhythm – while the horns at the top of the group are vamping around in these majestic charts that break out into fantastically searing solos. Basie's on piano, natch – and other players include Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Henry Coker, Al Grey, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Titles are all brilliant Hefti originals – and include "After Supper", "Flight Of The Foo Birds", "Teddy The Toad", "Splanky", "Fantail", and "Lil Darlin". LP, Vinyl record album

Jon sings on every track, with this raspy power that pushes the rest of the music forward very strongly – igniting the proceedings with the kind of fire you'd hope for, given the album's dedication to "the dreamers, seers, griots, and truth tellers who refuse to let us fully descend into madness". The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". Beggar & CoBeggar & Co – Revisited, Remixed, & Remastered ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
The cover looks a bit vintage, but the set features more contemporary tracks from this legendary UK soul group – the combo who gave birth to Incognito at the end of the 80s, and touched a fair bit of other acts as well! Over the decade, Beggar & Co have kept going strong – with a fantastic blend of soul, jazz, and funk – led here by trumpeter Kenny Wellington, who also handles lead vocals on a number of tracks – in a strong lineup that also features saxes and flute from David Baptiste, vibes from Orphy Robinson, and keyboards from Camelle Hinds! As the title implies, most tracks are variations on other recent material – and titles include "Time", "Somebody Help Me Out (boogie back extended)", "Yesterday's Gone (inst)", and 2021 remasters of "Open Sesame", "Sleeping Giants", "Say What's On Your Mind", "Goin To See My Baby", and "While The City Sleeps". Jorge BenNegro E Lindo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 39.99
A seminal set from Jorge Ben – one that mixes samba soul with more baroque arrangements from the legendary Arthur Verocai! The record's got a different feel than some of Jorge's other work – almost a wider vision of music that ties his usual funky style to some of the more ambitious modes being explored by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo at the time – expressed here in some larger instrumental passages that shade the tunes lightly, while still letting Jorge step out strongly on vocals and the usual mix of tight percussion and raspy guitar. Titles include "Que Maravilha", "Rita Jeep", "Comanche", "Porque E Proibido Pisa Na Grama", "Cassius Marcelo Clay", "Palomaris", "Maria Domingas", and "Negro E Lindo". LP, Vinyl record album

Wild stuff – a soundtrack made up of a number of different avant classical pieces, designed to accompany the film The Female Prisoner. Boulez directs Webern's "Five Pieces For Orchestra OP 10", and Leonard Bernstein directs Mahler's "Third Movement from Symphony No 4". The best part, though, is side two – which features Berio's striking "Visage" – a classic magnetic tape work based on the vocals of Cathy Berberian and filled with nice electronics! Elmer BernsteinCarpetbaggers (with bonus tracks) ... CD
AVA/Intrada, 1964. Used ... $24.99
Elmer Bernstein at his greatest – working here with the best mix of drama and energy he could bring to a film score during this golden age – a perfect blend of older orchestrations and a new sort of emotion that was perfect for the 60s! The score follows strongly off some of Bernstein's best from the late 50s – and has that amazingly evocative way of setting a new scene with each new tune – an almost-visual way of putting things forward that works quite strongly, even away from the film! This great CD edition features a whopping 31 tracks in all – 21 numbers from the film, plus 10 more from the 1964 album, which offers a re-recording of the score. Titles include "Speak Of The Devil", "Forbidden Room", "New Star", "The Producer Asks For A Divorce", and "The Carpetbagger Blues". CD

Joseph BeuysBeuys Laughing/Beuys Lacht (10 inch LP) ... LP
Staeck/Steidl (Germany), 1974. New Copy ... $33.99 40.00
A pretty amazing little record – and one that's right up there with the wit and concept of other work you might know from artist Joseph Beuys! The material is from 1974 – culled together from a succession of tapes of Beuys speaking during a tour of America – tapes that seemed to include a surprising amount of laughter in spots, which was all then pulled out and mixed together as a single album of laughing – one that has a vibe that's a lot spookier than you might expect! There's an odd sense of poetry to the laughter – almost like soundshape writing, but more "improvised" if that makes any sense – and the tapes were lost for decades, and finally rediscovered and remastered for this release. BigyukiReaching For Chiron ... CD
Likely, 2018. Used ... $9.99
Fantastic future soul from Bigyuki – an artist who's got a really far-reaching vision for his music – even though his sound is very stripped down overall! The music here is almost a science fiction take on contemporary soul – with these really wonderful, almost sinister keyboards and basslines – used in electronic flows that are wrapped alongside guest lyrics from Bilal, Chris Turner and others – but which also are more than happy to hang around some beats, and shift in these beautiful instrumental modes! The whole thing is completely unique – immediately contemporary, but with the depth of keyboard work of the past – jazz elements in the mix somewhere, but nice and lean overall. Titles include "Burnt N Turnt", "Pom Pom", "Eclipse", "Simple Like You", "Soft Places", "NuNu", "In A Spiral", "2060 Chiron", "Boom", and "Belong". CD

David BinneyGlimpse Of The Eternal ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2022. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
David Binney is one of those generous saxophonists who seem to often let the role of the rest of the group shape their records as much as the vision and solos of the leader – and that's definitely the case here, on a wonderful date that draws a lot from the presence of pianist Craig Taborn in the quartet! In fact, all group members are great – Eivind Opsik on bass and Dan Weiss on drums – and there's a very cohesive vibe to the way they all come together that's similar to when a really well-matched piano trio hits the studio – often moving past just a setting for solos, and instead coming up with a sense of richness that resonates with all four corners of the square. Many of the tunes are originals by Binney, mixed in with some surprising numbers from other sources – and titles include "Group", "Our Place", "Vibe Changer", "Craig", "Dave", "Group", and "Ambivalence". Three very inventive improvisers, all coming together in a set of performances inspired by the work of artist/writer Robert Henri – but with sounds that are definitely all their own! The mix of Michael Bisio's bass and the cello of Fred Lonberg-Holm is great – and Kirk Knuffke blows both regular and soprano cornet with these cool compressed notes that often make this nice bridge from the lower sonic reaches! Lonberg-Holm adds in some electronics – sometimes in ways that make it difficult to tell which source he's using, electric or acoustic – and titles include "R Henri", "Things Hum", "Orange Moon Yellow Field", "Both Keys Belong To You", "Use Them", and "A Dog Likes To Gnaw A Bone". Black Market BrassUndying Thirst ... LP
Colemine, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
Beautifully heavy sounds from Black Market Brass – a group who started out with more of a global funk approach, but who emerge here with the intensity of some lost funky soundtrack – all with the sort of edge you might expect from the cover! The style here is really revolutionary – unlike anything else we've ever heard from a group with "brass" in their name – in part because the group has some very cool distortion on the keyboards and guitar, which gives those electric elements a very sinister sound next to the straight ahead fire of the horns – served up with really hard-driving rhythms throughout, in a way that seems to pull together older traditions of Afro Funk, Nola Brass, and even some of the southern college bands – but all with a very 21st Century vision. Titles include "So Who (parts 1 & 2)", "Into The Thick", "War Room", "Cheat & Start A Fight", "Undying Thirst", and "NBT". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". The record's a historic one – as it mark's Wayne Shorter's first session with the group, and the first time that they recorded his great composition "Lester Left Town" – a wonderful tune that sounds a bit different here than on the later Jazz Messengers recording of the composition. Shorter's talent is already burning brightly at this point – as is that of trumpeter Lee Morgan – and other group members include Walter Davis Jr on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Blakey on drums. Tidal Waves, Late 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On June 18, 2022
You gotta love the confidence in Blakey's title for this one – because even in the late 70s, over 20 years since starting the Jazz Messengers, he was still very much in his prime! The album has him working with a wonderful group that includes Bobby Watson, Curtis Fuller, David Schnitter, and James Williams – plus percussionist Ray Mantilla, added in on a few tracks to give the set a slightly fuller sound. Tracks are long, dynamic, and gorgeous – really stepping out with the warmth and imagination that Blakey never let die during his career – but which seemed to be buring as brightly during this stretch as it was during the few really noteworthy points of earlier years. The set features a wonderful early reading of Watson's "To See Her Face", plus "Kamal", "Jody", and "1978". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Sunday, June 19. Ogun (UK), 1964. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A much-needed look at the early sound of The Blue Notes – a performance right before they left South Africa, and with a nicely different sound than some of their later London performances issued on the Ogun label! The group here are already very much in their own sound and spirit, but with less of the free improvisation of the 70s – more some of the rhythmic modes you'd know from other South African jazz of the period, but mixed with the kind of complexity you'd hear in a Charles Mingus record – all sorts of of amazing arrangements that are peppered with really wonderful solos from the members of the sextet! The lineup is different than the quartet and quintet dates of the following decade – with tenor saxophonist Nick Moyake working alongside Dudu Pukwana on alto, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Chris McGregor on piano, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Luis Moholo on drums. The set features a range of great modern jazz compositions by the players – including "Coming Home", "Two For Sandi", "Dorkay House", "B My Dear", "Vortex Special", and "Now". CD

A pretty great book about folks who almost made it in the music business, but who never quite hit the stardom they were destined for – even though a few of these figures have become legendary over the years! The book looks at rock and soul artists from the 60s and 70s, almost all of them with pretty amazing stories – and continued moments of "almost" in their careers – points where their paths seemed about to hit the big time, but life turned the other way. These aren't one-hit wonders, or failures – but really interesting people whose stories are great, and often illuminated with really striking photos and images from their past. The brilliance of Chris Bowden is back – the first record to capture the brilliance of his Soul Jazz debut, recorded way back in the early 90s! The single, like that record, is a brilliant assemblage of jazz, strings, sound, beats, and a cosmic musical vision that takes us back to the early 70s post-Trane heyday of Impulse Records. 4 Hero recognize the brilliance too – and they've done a beautiful job with their remix of "Beautiful Nasty"! The cover and title here hint at the music within – as David Boykin plays solo, and moves between work on bass clarinet and drums – both instruments we're not used to hearing him handle, and which open up very different sides of his style! The drums are maybe the biggest surprise – sometimes starting out spare and tentative, then moving in these almost-cyclical passages – as Boykin makes his way around the drum kit, feeling out textures and patterns, then slightly shifting them as the performance moves on! The bass clarinet work is great too – sometimes with a rich tone that's not typical for the instrument – almost as if David is channeling his tenor expression through the different horn, with results that are wonderful. The set features five improvised performances, titled one through five. CD

The record that first made us fall in love with the music of Billy Bragg – a really unique set of tunes, especially for its time – music that's both personal and political, and delivered with just a voice and electric guitar! Billy's spare style was a stark contrast to the bolder modes of the punk and post-punk years – but it carried its own special power, too – as unfettered, Bragg is able to come across clearly and powerfully – at a level that really hammers home the strength and sentiment of his tunes. The piano is great – rolling with a sense of freedom sometimes, but returning to majestic melody at others – and Braufman blows with this searching quality that really matches its energy, and sounds deeply soulful throughout. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Anthony Braxton/Milford Graves/William ParkerBeyond Quantum ... CD
Tzadik, 2008. Used ... $11.99
A fantastic outing from these three legends of improvised music – set that's maybe more in the territory of work by Milford Graves and William Parker than it is the usual work of Anthony Braxton – especially for this time in his career! Graves plays drums and percussion, Parker is on bass, and Braxton leaps into the fray wonderfully as the three improvise together – drawing on energy that's much more like his Chicago roots in the AACM than his style of later years – almost as if Braxton's rewriting himself into loft jazz history and shaking loose of the mathematical formulas that often inspire his tunes! Braxton handles a range of saxes, and Graves is especially wonderful in the recorded space of the meeting – as the trio make their way through five improvised selections. CD
