Violent FemmesHallowed Ground ... LP
Slash/Craft, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Pure greatness from The Violent Femmes – only the trio's second album, but a set that already has them expanding their sound greatly! They've still got all the raw power of their debut – and Gordon Gano's vocals sound nastier than ever – but they've also picked up a lot more instruments, too – including some folksy elements that are mixed with punkier impulses – all at a level that complicates the groove, and really creates a lot more variety in the structure of their songs! A few guests round out the instrumentation – but the real charm is still mostly from the trio, and especially Gano – whose lead vocals are some of the most unique in music at the time – as is his conception of a song. Titles include the excellent "Country Death Song", plus "I Hear The Rain", "Jesus Walking On The Water", "Hallowed Ground", "Sweet Misery Blues", "Black Girls", "It's Gonna Rain", and "I Know It's True But I'm Sorry To Say". LP, Vinyl record album
(New all-analog remastering – cut from the original stereo tapes!)

✨✧ Violent FemmesViolent Femmes (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Slash, 1982. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprising classic from the early 80s underground – a record that came to the world from the scene in Milwaukee, where neither the group nor the rest of the world would have expected the album to have such staying power over the decades! And yet, from the very first needle drop, it's hard to imagine otherwise – as the record's got this raw intensity that's not really punk, certainly not new wave – almost an American primitivist energy that really gets to the heart of the matter from the very first note – and goes on to deliver a non-stop testament of angst and longing, set to scratchy guitar and fast-riffing drums! Gordon Gano's vocals perfectly fit the spirit of the songs – and the set's full of classics that include "Blister In The Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", "Gone Daddy Gone", and "Prove My Love". CD

✨✧ VariousHouseplant Houseparty (blue & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Houseplant, 2024. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A weird and wonderful collection of tracks – funk, soul, and plenty more – all put together without any sort of boundaries or focus – which makes the whole thing one hell of a groovy record! The set's one of the flagship titles for the Seth Rogan-owned Houseplant label – one of their few vinyl releases, designed to fit in with the lifestyle of their other products – but even without that pedigree, there's plenty of great and well-chosen cuts here – and the assortment makes the whole thing way different than any standard funky compilation! Titles include "Good News" by Eamon, "Together (down dumbing rmx)" by Quel Maker, "Night Dancer" by Split Decision Band, "Leave My Beat Alone" by Raw Soul & Dorsey Brockington, "Cars That Go Boom" by L'Trimm, "Green & Money (good woman rmx)" by Maker Bishop Lamont, "Ombele" by Karl Hector & The Malcouns, "Blister In The Sun" by Violent Femmes, "Beat 100" by Benny Sings and Cola Boyy, "Pimp" by Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, "Oxtanding" by Roc C, "Summer Madness SA" by Karriem Riggins, "Come & Get Your Love" by Family Tree, "Love Dub" by World Quake Band, and "Drop" by The Pharcyde.
