Legacy, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.99
Not experienced? Well, this album will help push you over the top – as it's done for decades of listeners from the heyday of young Jimi Hendrix all the way up to the present! The set's a classic through and through – a blueprint not just for the genius of Hendrix, but for generations of guitar heroes to come – as you might expect with a lineup that includes "Hey Joe", "Manic Depression", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Fire", "Third Stone From The Sun", "Are You Experienced", and "Purple Haze". ✨✧ Brand New HeaviesHeavy Rhyme Experience Vol 1 ... LP
Delicious Vinyl, 1992. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal album from the early 90s – one that not only furthered the rebirth of live funk instrumentation at a time when ditigal elements dominated the scene – but also really opened up that mode to a whole new generation of hip hop as well! At a time when the music was all about the samples and beats, Brand New Heavies took it back to the generation before – and provided live instrumentation for a host of fantastic talents – a legendary lineup that includes performances from Main Source, The Pharcyde, Black Sheep, Kool G Rap, Gang Starr, and Masta Ace – all young and at the top of their game, with a quality level that alone would make the album great – then really sends it over the top when paired with the instrumentation! The whole thing's amazing – still maybe yet to be topped in such a style – and titles include "Who Makes The Loot", "It's Getting Hectic", "Wake Me When I'm Dead", "Soul Flower", and "Bonafide Funk". ✨✧ Voices Of East HarlemVoices Of East Harlem ... CD
Vinyl Experience (UK), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of sweet group soul! This was the first secular record cut by The Voices Of East Harlem – a group who'd had an earlier gospel-tinged album on Elektra, but who are soaring out here in a brilliant mix of righteous mainstream soul styles – courtesy of the Curtom power team of Rich Tufo, Leroy Hutson, and Curtis Mayfield! The album's an unusual non-Curtom effort by the Hutson and Curtom – who collaborated in producing the record with Tufo, who himself did most of the arrangements with Hutson – in a mode that's wonderfully in the same spirit as Leroy's seminal work for Curtom in the mid 70s. There's a depth here that makes the album one of our favorite-ever soul records from the 70s – brilliant not just for the overall sound, but also for the pointed lyrics and really personal feel of the songs. Lead vocals shift between the different tunes – but are mostly handled by Gerri Griffin and Monica Burress, with warm support by the rest of the group. Titles include "Giving Love", "Cashing In", "Could This Be Love", "New Vibrations", and "Wanted Dead or Alive". CD

Sean BonniwellNight Of The Witches (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Real Gone, Early 1970s. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
A lost soundtrack gem from the great Sean Bonniwell – an artist you might know from his 60s hits in The Music Machine, and one who uses all that sonic experience in a mighty nice way on this overlooked b-movie score from the early 70s! The record has plenty of rockish elements – fuzzy guitar, freaky organ, and some nicely groovy drums – and there's some vocals on a few tracks too, echoing some of the rockish modes that you'd hear some of the AIP soundtracks of the period, but much more integrated here with the instrumental numbers! The whole thing's a wonderfully groovy treat – and titles include "Man Of Many Pleasures", "Twenty Five Grand", "Sagittarius Ascends", "Athena", "Down To The Sky", "Night Of The Witches", and "Gravedigger Blues". Experience UnlimitedFree Yourself ... LP
Black Fire, 1977. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
A wonderfully spiritual album – and one that's maybe a bit of a surprise, given the later fame of the group! The group here is billed by their full name – Experience Unlimited – but where later known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". Yet as a classic album on the Black Fire label, this record is nothing like their 80s material at all – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju and the larger family of Black Fire artists! This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe – and a message to match the title and the cover. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness". LP, Vinyl record album

Teichiku/Lawson (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $45.99 53.99
Japanese erotica pop from singer and actress Reiko Ike – recorded around the time of her most popular pink films/sexploitation acting gigs – and a record that really lays the erotica theme on thickly! The sound is late 60s/early 70s seedy soundtrack style – with sultry rhythms, sax, chimes other thematic arrangements – nothing subtle about it, but plenty groovy! Ike's vocals are as explicit as they could get away with – moans, coos and occasional singing! Titles include "I Am A Woman", "Wandering Guitar", "After The Rain Stops", "Not An Angel", "Bond Of Love", "Love Slave", "Experience" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Ted LucasTed Lucas (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Third Man, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99 On February 21, 2025
The lasting legacy of the enigmatic Ted Lucas – a somewhat mysterious figure who moved between Detroit and Los Angeles in the late 60s – but who works here with a sound that's completely his own! Part of the record was created as demo tracks for Warner Brothers – who'd issued some of Ted's earlier singles with other bands – but the material never got released on the bigger label, but has the kind of completely individual vibe that really captures the spirit of the best underground work Warner was handling at the time. Lucas sings shorter tracks on side one – but often with this weird sort of overlapping production style – creating his own vocal harmonies that resonate with slightly jagged guitar lines – flowing out in modes that partly illustrate his experience studying sitar with Ravi Shankar on the west coast, partly just show a love of unusual tunings that would have made Lucas great even as a solo instrumentalist. Side two definitely moves more into those modes – territory that resonates nicely with Sandy Bull or Robbie Basho – and titles include "Plain & Sane & Simple Melody", "Now That I Know", "Baby Where You Are", Robins Ride", "Sonny Boy Blues", and "Love & Peace Raga". Superjock, 2025. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Connie Price & The Keystones serve up a very different sound than usual – a fierce blend of hip hop and funk, all at a level that almost recalls the Heavy Rhyme Experience album from back in the day! The tracks were all originally issued as 7" singles by the New Orleans Superjock label – and they've got this upbeat, powerful quality that's very different than some of the moodier, murkier modes we might expect from the group – maybe no surprise as the tracks are all invigorated by work from guest MCs – including Apani B Fly MC, Guilty Simpson, Fullee Love, Bootie Brown, Rakaa Iriscience, and Destani Wolf! Titles include "All Night", "For The Wicked", "Everybody Pays", "Uptown Rulers", and "Come On Down" – all presented in original versions on side one – then as Professor Shorthair edits and remixes on side two! The mindblowing debut of De La Soul – a set that's inarguably one of the most important records in hip hop history – overflowing with playful, endearingly oddball trio rhymes and Prince Paul production at it's most sprawlingly sampled and creative! The set has classic songs that stand out well enough on their own – but they're all also wonderfully linked together as a whole, making the album one of the first really well-thought out full length albums in hip hop – filled with loosely connective skits with recurring characters that are vital to the experience of listening to the record as a whole! Additionally, the set is especially fascinating given its 1989 release year – a time when so many of the contemporaneous crews and solo MCs on both the east coast and west coast were going grittier, darker and more profane – but it doesn't feel like a conscious reaction to that, as much it feels like sharp trio and a brilliant producer carving out their own damn creative niche. Maybe the most powerful, personal album that Killer Mike ever recorded – a set that took many years to put together, and which definitely represents the journey the rapper was experiencing at the time! Mike channels some of his own experience to deal with the larger issues that are facing so many black Americans in recent years – and while some of his resolutions are definitely his own, they are delivered with a sense of power that certainly resonates at a much larger level too! A great return to form for Prince – even though at the time, we all had to refer to him with an unpronounceable symbol! There's a lean, funky vibe to most of the record – almost a step back to the unified group approach of his mid 80s classics – and even though a few sonic elements have been updated, they changes have been done in the best way possible – partly by absorbing some of the new pop psychedelic touches that Prince himself had unlocked back in the 80s, filtered into the work of others, and which are taken back here with great modifications that really sound great next to the grooves! Velvert Turner was one of the few cats to study as an understudy with Jimi Hendrix – and you can definitely hear that right in the opening notes of the set – which bristles with raw energy, and wild guitar lines that owe plenty to the recently departed Hendrix! Velvert's working in a core trio, very Experience-like – with bass from Prescott Niles and drums from Tim McGovern – a setting that lets Turner really take center stage with his wicked guitar work and sinister-sounding vocals! A totally cool little set, and one that takes us back to the kind of commercials they used to play at the drive-in theaters between two different movies in a long double-feature! The tracks here are all short, playful little tunes with plenty of 60s elements – sometimes jazzy, sometimes groovy – extolling the virtues of popcorn, pizza, Pepsi, and anything else you might want to whet your whistle or tame your stomach during the course of a long cinematic experience! As you'd guess from Something Wild, a lot of great research went into this project – and there's some surprising artists in the lineup, doing work you never would have imagined. The second set from Resavoir – a project headed by Chicago producer/musician Will Miller, an artist who's had a lot of experience in the higher reaches of the hip hop scene – but who here gives himself over to much more personal, introspective modes! Yet the album's not a solo effort either, as Miller works with a host of other musicians in a groove that's fluid, often soulful, and yet very laidback – maybe an answer to some of the more meditative projects on the International Anthem label, as the work moves at the pace of some of those, but with more of an electric soul at the core. A solo record, but one with a very unique approach – as Tomin Perea Chamblee uses overdubs to layer his wonderful performances on cornet, trumpet, and clarinets – all in a way that seems to create an intimate expression of a larger group experience! The mix of reed and brass parts is wonderful – and the instrumentation shifts throughout, with occasional electronics and tape, in a mode that echoes other International Anthem projects, but still retains the very personal vibe of the record! The set brings together selections from previous digital-only releases – including the long "Mis Gran Antecesores", with tracks dedicated to Charles Mingus, Mal Waldron, Albert Ayler, Cal Massey, and other modern jazz greats – plus the "El Chupaflor" suite, and the shorter "Unconditional Love". A very different record than usual for Arto Lindsay – definitely one that's at the more artistic side of his spectrum – as the music was done for a sonic installation at a gallery in Switzerland, and is very different than some of Lindsay's guitar work and vocals! In fact, Arto didn't play most of the sounds within himself – and instead, the package features percussion recorded at a temple in Brazil, used in slow-building ways to recreate the energy of a carnaval experience – but with a leaner level that's more suited to the artistic nature of the work. The original 27 channel presentation of the music was reworked into a style that is more suitable for vinyl playback. LP, Vinyl record album

Quite possibly our favorite installment so far in the Madlib Medicine Show series – as the set's a treasure trove of rare work from the many-faceted Yesterday's New Quintet combo – that genius funky jazz ensemble headed by Madlib! According to the notes, some of these cuts are from rare small-batch releases (although we're not even sure those exist) – and others are previously unreleased numbers that are finally seeing the light of day – all together a brilliant illustration of the sorts of sounds that Madlib's pulled up from the American underground of the 60s and 70s – weird space jazz, offbeat funk, modal moments, and more – played with completely amazing rhythms, and production that really lives up to the spirit of the inspirations! There's plenty of great keyboards, and all tracks are instrumentals – with titles that include "High Jazz" by The Kenny Cook Octet, "Pretty Eyes" by Jahari Massamba Unit, "Electronic Dimensions" by Generation Match, "Funky Butt (part 1)" by Poyser Riggins & Jackson, "Space & Time" by RMC, "Conquistador" by Yesterday's New Quintet, "Tarzan's Theme" by Big Black Foot Band, and "Kimo" by Joe McDuphrey Experience. The session was recorded in London – as you might guess from the title – and although Monk's not working with his regular quartet with Charlie Rouse, he does interact wonderfully with a trio that includes Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass! Funk from Belgium? Believe it or not, stranger things have happened – and we can promise that if you played these tracks back to back with more familiar grooves from other 70s sources, you'd quickly find that these Belgian grooves are right up there with the best of the bunch! The set's maybe a more sophisticated follow-up to the excellent Funky Chicken collection, which documented some grittier Belgian 70s material a few years back – and this one shows off a wickedly sharp batch of tunes that include funky fusion, sweet sound library numbers, and lots of really inventive cuts that are plenty funk, but often take some great chances too – in ways that almost make us think that the nation's scene was so small that musicians from different genres were often hanging out together, and breaking down lots of musical boundaries in the process! As with the other set, the presentation here is wonderful – not just fantastic music we'd never have discovered otherwise, but also very detailed notes and an overall punch that few other funky compilations can match. Titles on this first vinyl volume include "Funky Chimes" by Francis Coppieters, "My Chinese Girl Likes Kung Fu Fighting" by The Sumos, "Traveling On Rhythms" by Bud Hunga & His Diplomatic Music, "Pink Movement" by Experience, "Tiger Walk" by The Peter Laine Orchestra, "Faded Lady (inst)" by SSO, "Barabajagal" by The Flying Guitar, "Scratch My Back (parts 1 & 2)" by The Soul Scratchers, "Skylab" by Electronic System III, and "Free Way Exit" by Guido Carnagy. We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Honest Jons/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of late 60s southern soul from the great Bettye Swann – 22 tunes cut for Fame Records between 1968 and 1970 after she jumped from the indie Money Records! Sadly, the move didn't turn Bettye into the major star the label no doubt expected to arise – and these fantastic tracks were largely unappreciated at the time. This release marks the very first worthy issue of most of this material, thanks to Honest Jon's – who did a similarly wonderful job rescuing some of the best material ever recorded by Bettye's contemporary Candi Staton! There's an achingly great southern soul feel to these tunes, which range from fragile soul ballads with sweet harmonies to poundingly righteous stompers. The feel is just loose enough, with roomy arrangements that leave plenty of space for Bettye's sweet vocals, but still with the ability to tighten up and pound at the crack of a whip! Masterful lost soul – and a joy to experience with a reverent reissue! Tracks include "Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me?)", "I'm Lonely For You", "Don't Touch Me", "Little Things Mean A Lot", "No Faith No Love", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Tell It Like It Is", "Today I Started Loving You Again" and lots more! Def Jam, 1987. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
The first mind-blowin' bombed out LP from the legendary PE! Public Enemy was still finding its voice on this debut effort, and if it's not quite the revolutionary experience to be found on the following couple of albums, it's still a fascinating effort and one of the best and most original hip hop debuts of the late 80s! Tracks include "You're Gonna Get Yours", "Timebomb", "Miuzi Weighs a Ton", "Sophisticated B*tch", and the title cut. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousReggae Time ... LP
Studio One, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy ... $20.99 25.99
It's reggae time from Studio One – which is maybe no surprise, as the legendary Jamaican imprint really helped get the music going before the big labels took over! This set's an obscure compilation from the best years of Studio One – and mixes rocksteady and early reggae tracks that are a lot lesser-known than some of the label's bigger hits – some by bigger names on the Jamaican recording scene, some much more obscure – all handled with a nicely rootsy approach on the production! Titles include "My Satisfaction" by John Holt, "Games People Play" and "Too Experienced" by Winston Francis, "Tea For Two" by The Heptones, "Your Love" and "Snake In The Grass" by Larry & Alvin, "First Come First Served" by The Sound Dimension, "Love Is A Pleasure" by The Cables, "I Got Soul" by Carlton & His Shoe, and "Reggae Time" by Vincent Gordon. LP, Vinyl record album
(A very cool pressing – new vinyl in a vintage cover!)
