Vince GuaraldiCast Your Fate To The Wind – Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus (180 gram 3LP set – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Fantasy/Craft, 1962. New Copy 3LPs ... $67.99 75.99 On February 24, 2023
A beautiful record of light, lyrical piano jazz – and one of the best-selling jazz albums ever on Fantasy Records! Vince Guaraldi started the set as a tribute to the film Black Orpheus – and some of the album features his nice renditions of Jobim/Bonfa tunes like "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orpheus". However, Guaraldi also managed to pen his own amazing track – "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" – a lyrical romping piano instrumental that went onto become a huge charting instrumental hit during the 60s. The track's been heard a million times over the years, but it's still pretty darn great – and it's surrounded in a nice set with other tunes that have the same feel – including "O Nosso Amour", "Alma-Ville", "Since I Fell For You", and "Moon River". Great expanded edition – with 16 more tracks added to the original album – alternate versions of album titles from the sessions, plus a few takes on "Jitterbug Waltz" as well! LP, Vinyl record album

Vince GuaraldiIt's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (45rpm pressing) ... LP
Craft, 1966. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
The third soundtrack that Vince Guaraldi did for The Peanuts TV specials – and maybe the best so far! There's a depth to the music that's wonderful – as Vince's combo works alongside some occasional larger orchestrations by John Scott Trotter, which are still arranged by Guaraldi – and the core combo adds in the guitar of John Gray, trumpet of Emanuel Klein, and sax and flute of Ronald Lang – the last of which is a particularly expressive sound on the record! The whole thing's worth it alone for "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" – which captures that perfect mix of melancholy and groove that was Guaraldi at his best – and the set also features maybe the best version ever of "Linus & Lucy", thanks to some flute – plus "Trick Or Treat", "Breathless", "Graveyard Theme", "Snoopy & The Leaf/Freida", and "The Charlie Brown Theme". ✨✧ Vince GuaraldiOh Good Grief! ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". ✨✧ Vince Guaraldi TrioCharlie Brown's Holiday Hits ... CD
Fantasy, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The music of Vince Guaraldi and Peanuts isn't just for Christmas – although Vince racked up plenty of fame over the years for his Christmas-themed tunes – and this collection's a great reminder that the Guaraldi genius graced a whole host of different Charlie Brown cartoons in the 60s and 70s – all with results that are completely sublime! The music here is from a host of different small combos, used in a number of different Holiday-themed cartoons over the years – and Vince plays piano with accompaniment that shifts from track to track, and includes a bit of trumpet from Tom Harrell, guitar from Eddie Duran, and timbales from Benny Velarde. The album may well be worth it alone for the classic "Joe Cool" – a tune that may well be our favorite from the Peanuts cartoons – and but the set includes lots of other greatness, with titles that include "Linus & Lucy", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Schroeder", "Charlie's Blues", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Surfin Snoopy", "Heartburn Waltz", and "Track Meet". Fantasy/Kritzerland, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible addition to the world of Charlie Brown soundtracks – and a record that's different both from the jazz album of Vince Guaraldi tunes issued by Fantasy, and the album of Rod McKuen and other instrumental tunes issued by Columbia! Instead, this one goes right to the source tapes for the original cartoon, instead of featuring later re-recordings – and the result is a batch of music that's wonderfully fresh, and which offers up a sublime mixing of both Guaraldi and McKuen modes! There's certainly lots of jazzy tunes by Vince – those cool piano cuts that he did so famously for Peanuts shows – but served up here in versions that are different than the ones on record, and interspersed with some larger orchestrations from John Scott Trotter – and the McKuen tunes are different than those recorded for Columbia – as they sometimes feature vocals by the characters, mixed with a few sung by Rod – and also a few instrumentals too. Plus, the whole thing comes with 10 more bonus tracks – a whopping 32 titles in all – with alternate and unused versions. Titles include "Percussion Swinger/Baseball Theme", "Blue Charlie Brown", "I Before E", "Champion Charlie Brown", "Linus & Lucy (Big City)", "Charlie Brown & His All Stars", "Bus Wheel Blues", and "Failure Face". ✨✧ Jerry GranelliJerry Granelli Trio Plays Vince Guaraldi & Mose Allison ... LP
Rare Noise (UK), 2020. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Jerry Granelli takes on two of our favorite piano talents of the 60s – working here with a great trio that features Jamie Saft on the acoustic keys and Bradley Christopher Jones on bass – all three working together on nicely different takes on the material! If you know both Mose and Vince, you'll know the sorts of material that you'll find within – lyrical and groovy Guaraldi tunes, and soul-drenched Allison numbers – but the approach of the combo is nicely different, and Saft does an especially nice job of making the tracks swing while also bringing plenty of his unique flavorings into play – maybe given a bit more of a groove than we might have expected, thanks to very strong work from Jones on bass. Titles include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Star Song", "Young Man Blues", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Parchman Farm", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", and "Christmas Time Is Here". Richie KamucaJazz Erotica ... LP
Hi Fi, 1957. Very Good+ ... $48.99
A killer bit of west coast jazz from the 50s – and hardly what you might expect from the title! The album's actually not the kind of aural sex you might expect (although it does have a nice nude on the front!) It is, however, one of the few sessions led by tenorist Richie Kamuca, a great player with a great edge here – one that's much sharper than the cheesecake painting, and a perfect driving force for the larger octet on the date! The album's similar to Kamuca's album on the Hi-Fi label – played with a largeish group, but a lean sound overall – thanks to the talents of Bill Holman on baritone, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Vince Guaraldi on piano, Monte Budwig on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. Arrangements are nicely fresh, and titles include "Star Eyes", "Linger Awhile", "Fun", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Way Down Under", and "Blue Jazz". LP, Vinyl record album

Branford MarsalisIn My Solitude – Live At Grace Cathedral ... CD
Okeh, 2014. Used ... $3.99 5.99
Branford Marsalis in a wonderful solo setting – a record that has the reedman playing in the open, echoey space of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral – a famous site that's also hosted legendary performances by Duke Ellington, Cal Tjader, and Vince Guaraldi! Branford blows both tenor and soprano sax – improvising on compositions, and blowing fresh improvisations himself – with a soulful sound and style that really open up our understanding of Marsalis as a musician – and which definitely has us reexamining his work all over again. The sound is haunting – especially the soprano passages, which have these really edgey tones at times – and titles include "Who Needs It", "The Moment I Recall Your Face", "Blues For One", "I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together", and CPE Bach's "Sonata In A Minor For Oboe Solo" – as well as four "Improvisation" tracks. Sweet funky jazz from pianist Gene Russell – one of the hippest albums he ever recorded! The sound is acoustic, but has a definite sense of electricity to Russell's phrasing on the piano – a bit like work from Vince Guaraldi from the time, when he was shifting between acoustic and electric – as if the latter instrument held on and helped shape the acoustic sound. The rest of the group features Henry Franklin on bass, Steve Glover on drums, and Tony William on congas – and the groove is kind of a soulful extrapolation of a core piano trio vibe – 60s soul jazz taken to hipper 70s territory. Titles include a great cover of "Listen Here", plus "Black Orchid", "Hitting the Jug", "Making Bread", and a version of "Silver's Serenade". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy/OJC, 1958. Used ... $5.99
A killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan Getz would take in later years – his bossa sessions, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea! The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. Billy Higgins is also added on drums, giving the set a lively songlike sound that's just great. The group works incredibly well together, and it's a shame they only really gelled for this rare non-Verve session. Titles include "Big Bear", "Crow's Nest", and "Ginza Samba". CD

✨✧ Ralph J GleasonMusic In The Air (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. Book is hardcover, and 309 pages. Book

A beautiful set of tracks from the San Francisco scene of the 50s! Moore is a heck of a tenor player, and this second album has him playing in tandem with saxophonist Harold Wylie, the co-leader of Moore's regular combo in San Francisco. The two-tenor frontline works nicely together, and backing's by the rhythm trio that completes the Moore/Wylie combo. One track – "Dues Blues" – features a pickup groove with Cal Tjader and Vince Guaraldi – and other tracks include "Pat's Batch", "Marna Moves", and "Edison's Lamp". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cal TjaderJazz At The Blackhawk ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real standout session from Cal Tjader – a straight jazz side from the late 50s, recorded with a hip group that includes Vince Guaraldi on piano, Gene Wright on bass, and Al Torre on drums. Although Cal's possibly better-remembered for his Latin work of the time, the record is a good reminder that the Tjader approach to vibes worked equally well in a more standard jazz setting – especially when paired with the lightly lyrical piano genius of a young Vince Guaraldi! The set was captured live at the Blackhawk in San Francisco – practically home turf for Cal and the group – with a sound that's easy, laidback, and very nicely grooving! Titles include "Lover Come Back To Me", "Bill B", "Land's End", "Thinking Of You MJQ", and "Two For Blues Suite". CD

Fantasy, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
A double-length set that features 2 Latin dates by vibist Cal Tjader! First up is Demasiado Caliente – one of Cal's lesser-known Latin sessions from his Fantasy Records years – a nice little cooker with some great arrangements from Eddie Cano, who also plays piano on the set! The album features two different groups – one a more familiar Tjader quartet with Lonnie Hewitt on piano and Jose Lozano on flute – the other a slightly larger group led by Cano, featuring Eddie on pian, Modesto Briseno on flute and alto, and Tony Terran on trumpet. Tracks are shortish, but plenty darn great – and Cal's vibes get some great company from the piano and horn players on the date. Percussion is by Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo – and titles include "Para Ti", "Mamblues", "Cal's Pals", "Tumbao", "Bludan", "Manila", and "Chispita". Cal Tjader Latino is tremendous Latin work from Cal – a set that has tracks that are a bit longer than usual, with grooves that really open up nicely and point the way towards the sound of his years at Verve Records! The players shift somewhat throughout the set, but are all pretty great – and they include Paul Horn and Rolando Lozano on flute, Jose Chombo Silva on tenor, and either Vince Guaraldi and Lonnie Hewitt on piano – plus heavy percussion from Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo. Titles include a really cooking take on "Afro Blue" – billed here to Mongo Santamaria as the author in the cut's pre-Coltrane fame – plus "Night In Tunisia", "Mambo Terrifico", "Rezo", and "Cuban Fantasy". ✨✧ Cal TjaderLos Ritmos Calientes (Ritmo Caliente/Mas Ritmo Caliente) ... CD
Fantasy, 1955/1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 2-in-1 Latin jazz spectacular from the mighty Cal Tjader! First up is the album Ritmo Caliente – one of Tjader's first Latin-tinged sessions for Fantasy Records – and a really wonderful batch of tracks recorded with a shifting array of very hip players! In addition to Cal's vibes, and expected Latin percussion – handled by Armando Peraza on congas and bongos – the set also features some totally slamming piano work from Eddie Cano, Manuel Duran, and Richard Wyands – each of whom get a chance at the keys on the set, really helping to bring in a range of different colors and tones. An added bonus is Jerome Richardson on flute – who plays on about half of the album's tracks – in that soulfully snaking way he virtually owned back in the 50s. Tracks are short, and filled with plenty of energy – and titles include "Ritmo Caliente", "Mambo Moderno", "Alegres Timbales", "Buhutu (Nanigo 6/8)", "Cubano Chant", "Goza", "Lamento De Hodi", "Mueve La Cintura", and "Afro Corolombo". On Mas Ritmo Caliente, Cal Tjader's working in a smoking Latin vibe throughout – and has managed to get some great extra help in his efforts! The album was mostly recorded in Chicago and New York, and these different locals seem to give the record a slightly different flavor than some of Tjader's other west coast dates from the 50s – a slightly harder Latin groove, thanks to the presence of players like Jose Chombo Silva on tenor sax, Gerald Sanfino on flute and alto, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, Mongo Santamaria on congas, Willie Bobo on timbales, and Luis Kant on percussion. Vince Guaraldi's on piano on all tracks – bringing in a nice dose of warmth next to Cal's vibes – and titles include "Mongorama", "Ritmo Africano", "Ritmo Rumba", "Tumbao", "Perdido", and "Cuco On Timbales". It's Christmas once again – but thanks to this groovy little set, you'll be celebrating with music that's a nice change from previous years! The package does a great job of pulling together rare 50s cuts in a variety of styles – country, R&B, instrumental, and early rock and roll – a blend that works wonderfully as the set steps from one unusual tune to the next – making for a great change from the Frank Sinatra and Vince Guaraldi albums that usually get big play during the 12th month of the year! The set's got 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Snow Man Rock" by Big Bud, "Frosty The Snowman" by Porter Wagoner, "Who Said There Ain't No Santa Claus" by Ron Holden, "Christmas Dinner" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Joy To The World" by The Louvin Brothers, "Swingin Christmas" by Earl Grant, "We Wanna See Santa Do The Mambo" by Big John Greer, "Sleigh Bell Rock" by Chuck Blevins, "Santa's Helper" by Joe Poovey, "Jingle Bells" by Chet Atkins, "I'm Gonna Tell Santa Claus On You" by Faron Young, and "Mister Santa" by Dorothy Collins. Fantasy, 1958/1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 live cookers from Cal Tajder – back to back on a single CD! The set begins with Night At The Blackhawk – one of Cal's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince Guaraldi on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, Willie Boby on drums, and Mongo Santamaria on congas – all musicians who'd previously helped Tjader hit some of his best Latin grooves! But the addition of Silva on a few tracks here really makes the set crackle – giving it a gutsy, soulful fee that you don't always get on some of Tjader's other records. Tracks are longish – and titles include the nice original "Bill B", plus jazzy versions of "I Love Paris", "Blue & Sentimental", and "Night In Tunisia". Live & Direct is great live work from Cal Tjader – one of a number of sets but at his home turf of the Blackhawk Nightclub in San Francisco! The album's nicely laidback, with tracks that stretch out a bit more than Tjader's studio work for Fantasy Records – often hitting a slight Latin groove at times, but with a bit more of a straight jazz vibes feel overall! The great Lonnie Hewitt's on the group on piano, coloring in the tunes with some very soulful notes – and in addition to Cal's vibes, the rest of the lineup includes Victor Venegas on bass, and Willie Bobo on drums. Mongo Santamaria on congas and Rolando Lozano on flute join in on the track "Mambo Terrifico" – and other titles include "Racoon Straits", "Bad & The Beautiful", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". Note that the CD omits the track "The Continental" from Live & Direct – due to space restrictions. CD

If you don't know the talents of Gary Versace on the piano, this is definitely the record to introduce you to his work – as Versace has quietly become one of the most distinct artists on his instrument in recent years – with a very individual quality that's almost impossible to describe in words! At some level, Versace has the angular abilities of a Herbie Nichols or Elmo Hope, but can also deliver these spaced-out chunks of color that almost recall Vince Guaraldi – while also sometimes stepping into the more lyrical territory of a player like Tommy Flanagan. Yet even these bigger names are hardly enough to compare to Versace's individuality – as the album resonates with a freshness that really sets it apart from other trio work of this nature – a quality encouraged by the work of Jay Anderson on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. A 2LP set that compiles early recordings made by Getz for Prestige – about half of them titles that were issued on early singles, combined with material from the album Stan Getz With Cal Tjader. The early singles feature a few tunes with the "brothers" style sound – Brew Moore, Allen Eager, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn on tenor with Stan – plus some other quartet sides. The Cal Tjader album is killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan would take in later years: his bossa sides, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea. The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. A hard-swinging session that's much hipper than you might guess from the "hi fi" or "west coast" in the title – recorded with none of the cliches that both tags might make you think – and instead a well-crafted set of solos from the mighty Richie Kamuca! Back in the 50s, Kamuca really had a tremendous tone – one that was often buried in larger groups, but occasionally got to take the solo spotlight on gems like this – stepping out with a raspy, almost gritty undercurrent – a sense of deeper soul in the sound that was uncommon for the west coast scene, and which we might almost compare to the similar qualities of a young Charlie Mariano on the alto sax. Although the group here is fairly largeish – with Bill Holman on baritone sax, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Conte Candoli on trumpet, and Vince Guaraldi on piano – Kamuca's clearly the main solo star, and is set up nicely in some subtle arrangements by Holman.
