Vin GordonIn De Garden ... LP
Studio 16 (UK), 2008. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
Vin Gordon's a musician with a hell of a legacy, including work in The Wailers with Bob Marley back in the 70s, and dozens if not hundreds of important reggae sessions over the years – and well into the 21st Century, he's one of the few players of his generation who's still going as strong as he did back in the day! Here, Gordon's tremendous work on trombone is laid out in settings that also feature original Wailers horn players joining him for the date – all in a set of righteous easygoing grooves that still have plenty of space for Vin to solo up top! Production is great – more early 80s than early oughties – and titles include "Race Track", "African Thing", "Double Take", "Stepping In", "Jones Town Special", and "See You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vin Gordon with The UpsettersMusical Bones ... LP
Studio 16 (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really mighty combination – the tremendous trombone of Vin Gordon, the production genius of Lee Scratch Perry, and the heady rhythms of the Upsetters – all combined here in an album that may well be one of Gordon's best! Vin gets all sorts of space to solo in the lead – and his trombone has lots of jazz-based improvisation, in ways you'd hear on records from artists like Roland Alphonso or Tommy McCook – just given the right sort of push at the bottom by players who include Boris Gardiner on bass, Earl Chinna Smith on guitar, and Winston Wright on organ – players who are much more back here in the mix than Gordon, who really shines in the spotlight. Titles include "Raw Chaw", "Labrish", "The Message", "Coco Macca", "Fly Away", "Four Of A Kind", "Vodoo Man", and "Quinge Up". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vin GordonWay Over Yonder ... LP
Joe Gibbs/Studio 16 (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Trombonist Vin Gordon gets some great Joe Gibbs backing here – with all the likely suspects in the studio, wrapping together a groove that has Vin's horn sliding right in! There's a bit less of the weird qualities of the Gordon material recorded at Black Ark – a more unified vibe that certainly has the trombonist working at the helm of the proceedings, but also very strongly part of the group as well – all for an instrumental roots outing that's mighty nice! Vin handled the arrangements with Errol Thompson – who also co-produced, and engineered with a mighty nice sound – on titles that include "Way Over Yonder", "Confucius", "Green Callie", "Fiddler Rock/Reel Rock", and "Easy Living". ✨✧ Upsetters With Vin GordonMusical Bones – Recorded At The Black Ark Studio In 1975 ... LP
Studio 16 (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Trombonist Vin Gordon makes a really strong appearance here – blowing these wicked solos with backings recorded at Black Ark – all in a heady style that shows why he was maybe the greatest player on his instrument in the Jamaican scene! Vin uses the trombone to do all these cool things – jazzy solos certainly, but with phrasing that goes way past the familiar – supported with work from Winston Wright on guitar, Earl Smith and Geoffery Chung on guitars, and Boris Gardinier on bass – all with production by Lee Scratch Perry. There's Gordon solos on every number – and titles include "Coco Macca", "Licky Licky", "Labrish", "Raw Chaw", "Four Of A Kind", and "Voodoo Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Crucial work from Joe Gibbs – a set with a social message on the cover, but one that delivers its righteous energy with an all-instrumental groove! The core group here are wonderful – Franklyn Waul and Errol Nelson on piano and organ, Tommy McCook on tenor, Vin Gordon on trombone, Sly Dunbar on drums, Lloyd Parks on bass, Sticky on percussion, and Eric Bingy Bunny Lamont on guitar – riffing through the groove with just the right stepping vibe to keep the heady brew mixed up right! Bunny LeeNext Cut – Dub Plates, Rare Sides, & Unreleased Cuts ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
A wealth of rare tracks from the archives of Jamaican producer Bunny "Striker" Lee – tracks pulled from one-off dubplates mixed direct from the studio, and other unreleased tracks pulled from never-heard master tapes too! The music here definitely lives up to Lee's production legend – and, as explained in the notes, these dubs have an extra added dimension than some of his contemporaries' work – as they're mixed from 4 track tapes, instead of 2 – which creates this much deeper sound, and even lot more room for echo! Yet there's also a core compressed competence to the cuts that we really love – rock-solid instrumentation from top-shelf Kingston studio legends, on rare dubs of "Enforcement" by Vin Gordon, "Blood Of Babylon" by Barrington Spence, "Down In A Babylon" by Johnny Clarke, "Ethiopian Girl" by Linval Thompson, "A Friend Indeed Dub" by The Aggrovators, "Crucial Dub" by Prince Jammy, "Satta Dread" by Wayne Jarrett, and "The Gorgon" by Cornell Campbell. Bunny Lee & OthersDreads Enter The Gates With Praise – The Mighty Striker Shoots The Hits ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 22.98
A fantastic tribute to the studio genius of Bunny Lee – and a set that's filled with the kind of tracks that may well knock Lee Scratch Perry right out of the spotlight! Bunny already had a long and varied career in Jamaican music by the time of these tracks – hustling things up right from a grass roots level, then rising to prominence as a producer with a huge amount of inventive new techniques – including the flying cymbal rhythm sound, which was a great balance to some of the deeper, murkier elements in his grooves! These cuts are from a time when Bunny was working together with a host of fantastic singers, many of whom were inspired by the new more righteous modes that were coming into play at the time – opening up with deeper messages, and equally deep performances – in an array of tracks here that still have a tremendous amount of power, even after the space of decades – thanks in part to superb backings by The Aggrovators. The choice of tracks is wonderful, and the whole thing's put together with the usual stellar handling by Soul Jazz – with titles that include "Enter Into His Gates With Praise" by Johnny Clarke, "So Jah Se Dub" by The Aggrovators, "Magnum Force" by Vin Gordon & The Aggrovators, "Real Born African" by Jah Stitch, "King Tubby Dub" by King Tubby meets Tommy McCook & The Aggrovators, "Check Sister Jane" by Dillinger, "The Wormer" by Prince Jazzbo, "You Don't Care For Me" by The Uniques, "Natty Dread Have Ambition" by Shorty The President, "A Land Far Away" by Gene Rondo, "You Should Be Thankful" by Mighty Diamonds, "Marvelous Rocker" by Winston Wright, and "Principle & Dignity" by Jah Youth. A new chapter in dub from Aswad – a set that points the way towards so many shifts that would take place in the music over the next few years – including the use of digital elements, and the rise of On-U Sound as well – all coming from crucial sounds created here on an Island Records classic! The set was mixed at Fallout Shelter, and has this really heady brew of deep dubby currents with occasional roots-inspired vocals – although those often get pretty abstracted into the mix. Instrumentation includes work from Vin Gordon on trombone, Brinsley Dan on guitar, Tony Gad on bass, and Drummie Zeb on drums – which often get this great splashy sound in the production. Titles include "Dub Fire", "Flikaflame", "Truth", "Bammie Blow", "Tuffist", "Shining Dub", "Zion I", "Natural Aggression", and "Ghetto In The Sky". LP, Vinyl record album

A dubbed-up remake of Lee Scratch Perry's excellent Rainford album – done in strong partnership with producer Adrian Sherwood, and featuring guest help from a host of talents – including the legendary Brian Eno, and trombonist Vin Gordon! The sound here is right up there with the earliest On-U Sound recordings – a forward-looking approach to Perry's older legacy, but never overdone with any sort of too-contemporary elements – that perfect blend that made Sherwood and the label so great back in the day. Titles include "Crickets In Moonlight", "Mind Worker", "Ensighted", "Hooligan Hank", "Dreams Come True", "Above & Beyond", and "Heavy Rainford". LP, Vinyl record album

The music is wonderfully lean – awash in echoey space, which makes the core elements sound really wonderful – with work from both Hibbert and Ansel Collins on keyboards, guitar from Earl Chinna Smith, and tenor and flute from Tommy McCook, and trombone from Vin Gordon – all used in very sparing ways, shifting from track to track – so that Hibbert is doing a lot with just a bit! Tracks include "Earthquake Dub", "Rasta Foundation", Fletcher Land", "Ital Menu", "Secret Agent", "An Event", "Black Diamond Rock", "Collie In Dub" and "Pain Land Dub". LP, Vinyl record album

About as classic as you can get for work from the mighty Joe Gibbs – a masterful pairing of instrumental sounds from The Professionals, and all these really cool studio touches from Erroll Thompson – maybe the man himself whose name should be on the cover of the record! Things are slightly more wigged out than on the first two volumes, but still have that great sense of balance that makes these records so great – older rhythms freshened by great contributions from Sly and Robbie on rhythms, and horn work from Tommy McCook on tenor and Vin Gordon on trombone! Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive collection of genius from producer Joe Gibbs – work recorded in just over the pace of a year in the studio – served up here in a double-length collection of 48 tracks in all, 33 of which appear on CD for the first time ever! Joe Gibbs is a figure who hardly needs any sort of introduction – a landmark force in the studio who really helped transform Jamaican music, and help it to reach some deeper, more spiritual currents that really gave the music a huge global push at the time of these recordings. And as with some of his studio contemporaries, Gibbs was a non-stop powerhouse who never seemed to run out of ideas – as testified by the huge amount of material in this set! These aren't throwaway cuts, but a deep dig into the world of Gibbs, all killer all the way through – presented with the very high standards of the Doctor Bird label – with cuts from Dennis Brown, Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Bongo Herman & Bonny, Derrick Morgan, Jackie Brown, Eddie Ford, Prince Francis, Augustus Pablo, Big Youth, The Ethiopians, Cat Campbell, Dillinger, Vin Gordon, The Senators, and even a few from Joe himself. Soul Jazz/Studio One (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A set that's heavy on roots reggae numbers, but which also maybe predates some of the more mainstream work in the field – especially some of the more easygoing tracks that were playing bit in American dorm rooms at the end of the 70s! Instead, these are cuts from a scene where the message in the music was plenty crucial, especially amidst the early 70s turmoil in Jamaica – where Studio One was close to the streets, and able to capture the moment with the same sort of brilliance and sharpness they brought to earlier generations of rocksteady and ska! The instrumentation is great, as some of the older players evolve into more spiritual modes – and titles include "Jah Righteous Plan" by Willie Williams, "Run Babylon" by Larry Marshall, "Babylon Rock" by Vin Gordon, "Behold The Land" by Joseph Hill, "Tenor On Call" by Tommy McCook, "Sun Is Shining" by Winston Matthews, "Satta" by Cedric Im Brooks, "Message Of Old" by Ken Boothe & Joe Higgs, "Sleeping Trees" by The Saints, and "Small Garden" by Zoot Sims. It's reggae time from Studio One – which is maybe no surprise, as the legendary Jamaican imprint really helped get the music going before the big labels took over! This set's an obscure compilation from the best years of Studio One – and mixes rocksteady and early reggae tracks that are a lot lesser-known than some of the label's bigger hits – some by bigger names on the Jamaican recording scene, some much more obscure – all handled with a nicely rootsy approach on the production! Titles include "My Satisfaction" by John Holt, "Games People Play" and "Too Experienced" by Winston Francis, "Tea For Two" by The Heptones, "Your Love" and "Snake In The Grass" by Larry & Alvin, "First Come First Served" by The Sound Dimension, "Love Is A Pleasure" by The Cables, "I Got Soul" by Carlton & His Shoe, and "Reggae Time" by Vincent Gordon. Blue Note (Germany), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal set of work from the Blue Note scene of the 60s – a record that's not just noteworthy for its role in helping return tenorist Dexter Gordon to the spotlight, but also for the fantastic work of pianist Sonny Clark in the quartet! Sonny's in wonderful form throughout – and seems to be even more relaxed and inventive than in the company of some of the other horn players he'd work with on Blue Note – and that's saying a lot, given the company he would keep! Gordon's solos are confident and mature, but deeply personal too – and the rest of the group features Butch Warren on bass and the great Billy Higgins on drums – a percussionist whose sense of looseness and imagination really matches that of Dex. Arctic Rodeo/Cultural Society, 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $20.99 24.99
Percussionist Zach Barocas leads a really wonderful group here – one who find freedom in spiritual jazz expression, but with instrumentation that's a nice change from the norm! The group's got some occasional sensitive string moments on cello and oboe, both reworked from their more familiar histories in European music, and set here next to nicely-building grooves from a lineup that also features J Robbins on electric piano and organ, and Mark Cisneros on a great range of elements – tenor, saxello, stritch, bass clarinet, flute, trombone, bass, and more percussion! Cisneros provides plenty of colors to the set, and really resonates next to the cello of Gordon withers and oboe of Lenny Young – as the ensemble work through eight different numbers that build in a wonderfully modal sort of way! The record's got Gordon vamping in tight hardbop formation – a sound that's strongly 60s Blue Note all the way through, and which shows the great control that the label helped bring to Dex's music – giving him new focus and energy to take off on much freer flights later in the 60s. Other players on the date include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Barry Harris on piano, Billy Higgins on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on bass – and Hubbard's trumpet is an especially welcome element here on the more upbeat numbers. Hutcherson's sound really transforms the session, giving it a shimmering middleground that disperses the dominance that Gordon's tenor usually has – and creating a warm, fluid feel that's really great. Barry Harris is in the group on piano – providing some wonderful accompaniment that's a great fit for Hutcherson's vibes – and the rest of the group is completed by the excellent rhythm section of Bob Cranshaw on bass and Billy Higgins on drums! Numero, Late 1970s. New Copy ... $21.99 26.99
A cool condensed version of the larger 4LP box set of work from the legendary Laraaji – a set that features passages from both his debut album and parts of six more extended tracks that were never issued at the time! That debut album is his legendary Celestial Vibrations – a beautifully trippy set of tracks from Edward Larry Gordon – an artist who's probably better known for his later Laraaji album recorded with Brian Eno, but one who sounds even better here on this debut set! The sound is very spiritual and meditative – long, drawn-out, side-long tracks that feature Gordon playing a weird, electrified zither – an instrument that's hardly the hokey, European-sounding one from mid-century – and instead a very tripped-out, abstracted one here – very spacey, with some great phase shifting employed in the studio, which creates an almost electronic pulse out of the acoustic instrumentation. The album features parts of two very long tracks – "All Pervading" and "Bethlehem" – done in a way that would make Alice Coltrane proud! Added to those cuts are parts of six other titles – all originally pressed only as acetates, and recorded around the same time – "Kalimba", "Ocean", "Koto", "Segue To Infinity", "Kalimba 2", and "Kalimba 4". Late life work from the legendary Sonny Stitt – a set that the saxophonist recorded overseas in the final year of his life, working alongside Red Holloway in the frontline as the pair trade solos back and forth on the extended titles on the set! The format's a bit like some of the other Stitt twin-saxophone records over the years – partly his early contests with Gene Ammons, but maybe even more like his early 70s blowing work alongside Dexter Gordon – and both players do plenty to get a lot in with just a little, really making the most of their solo space. Other players include Vinny Parker on piano, Pete Clennon on bass, and Ron Parry on drums – and titles include "Wee", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Yesterdays", and "Blues Up & Down". One of Dexter Gordon's proudest moments of the 50s – a rock-solid session for Bethlehem – easily one of the best-remembered hardbop sides from the label's California years! The album's got a relaxed, free-blown sound that's quite nice – with Dex in the lead on tenor, supported by the trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums. Gordon's perhaps not as fully imaginative as he would become in the 60s, but his sound and control is still great throughout – and the rhythm section really helps knock this one out of the park. Pure greatness from The Violent Femmes – only the trio's second album, but a set that already has them expanding their sound greatly! They've still got all the raw power of their debut – and Gordon Gano's vocals sound nastier than ever – but they've also picked up a lot more instruments, too – including some folksy elements that are mixed with punkier impulses – all at a level that complicates the groove, and really creates a lot more variety in the structure of their songs! A few guests round out the instrumentation – but the real charm is still mostly from the trio, and especially Gano – whose lead vocals are some of the most unique in music at the time – as is his conception of a song. Columbia, 1978. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Later genius from Dexter Gordon – an album recorded upon his return to the US in 1976, and done in a style that breaks the bounds of some of his sessions in Europe! Gordon seems to take new life in the recording – moving past the simple role of main soloist on familiar tunes, and stepping into a much more strongly group-minded leader – one who grooves easily with the piano of George Cables, bass of Rufus Reid, and drums of Eddie Gladden – in a session that's overflowing with soulful invention. Even older tunes take on a new spark of life in these arrangements – and Gordon's phrasing has this "bite" that comes through beautifully, even in the mellower moments. Titles include "Tanya", "I Told You So", "LTD", "Moment's Notice", and "As Time Goes By". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Booker ErvinSetting The Pace (plus The Trance) ... CD
Prestige, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A CD of very long tracks from Booker Ervin – only 4 tunes in all, but each over 15 minutes long! First up is the album Setting The Pace – an album that's one of the most open-ended and jamming sets that Booker Ervin recorded for Prestige in the 60s! The album's a live date from Germany – featuring Dexter Gordon joining Ervin on the stage for some very long, extended solo work – the sort that Dex was starting to do heavily overseas at the time, and which is relatively new territory for Ervin – at least on record. Other players include Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – but the clear starts of the set are Booker and Dexter – blowing in a range of modern and soulful modes throughout their extended solos. Album features 2 side-long tracks – "Setting The Pace" and "Dexters Deck". Next up is The Trance – an amazing record from the legendary Booker Ervin – and a set that really does a great job of bridging his modernist tendencies and soul jazz roots! The title track – "The Trance" – is an amazing 20 minute number that takes up all of side one of the record – and features Ervin soloing in an incredibly imaginative way – not as boppish as on his set with Dexter Gordon, but more in the powerful-voiced style that he developed with Mingus. The rest of the group features Jaki Byard on piano (always a treat!), Reggie Workman on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – and side two features a very moody take on "Speak Low". Note that the CD omits the track "Groovin At The Jamboree" from The Trance – due to space restrictions. CD

Blue Note, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual album for Dexter Gordon – one that has him working in a quintet with vibes by Bobby Hutcherson! The album includes a great version of "Manha de Carnaval", plus a Dex original, "Le Coiffeur" – and the tracks "Heartaches", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Everybody's Somebody's Fool". A standout 70s set from Dexter Gordon – one that's a bit tighter than some of his longer-blown dates from overseas – and which almost sparkles with the same power as his 60s albums on Blue Note! The group here is nice and tight – with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all grooving in a style that's sharply focused, and which really sets the stage for Dex's wonderful tone on the solos. Pedersen's bass is great too – sometimes stepping out with a presence not usually heard on a set like this – and titles include the Gordon originals "The Apartment", "Antabus", and "Candlelight Lady" – plus "Wee Dot" and "Old Folks". Rare Blue Note work from Dexter Gordon – an album that was recorded during Gordon's legendary run for the label in the 60s, but not issued until a brief vinyl pressing nearly 15 years later! A legendary soundtrack from the key years of British gothic horror – music for a film that was creepy enough on its own, but which really got sent over the top with the sounds provided by composer Paul Ferris! Ferris was working with the De Wolfe sound library at the time, but the music is far from just canned cuts thrown into the film – as there's an overall sinister vibe that really fits the spooky narrative of the story, and the super-creepy role of Vincent Price in the lead – augmented by the music with all these dark, downturning touches that are still pretty terrifying, even without the images on the screen. Evidence, 1959/1961. Used ... $2.99
Rare work from Eddie Jefferson – cut between his early years on Prestige, and his revival on Riverside – work done for the Festival Records label, but best known in this hip 70s package put together by Inner City! The work here is a great precursor to Eddie's 60s comeback – and shows him really moving forward strongly, even on a tiny label – reworking his older vocal style with a hipper modern groove, and really reaching some new territory in the process. The tunes are awash in those charming tones and phrasings that always set Jefferson apart from the rest – and there's a few R&B undercurrents here, mixed in with the more familiar bop influences. Players are all great too – and include Johnny Coles or Howard McGee on trumpet, James Moody on tenor, Matthew Gee on trombone, Musa Kaleem on tenor and baritone, and Johnny Acea on piano. Babs Gonzalez and Honey Gordon get in a few licks on versions of "So What" and "Sister Sadie" – helping Eddie out with their hip vocal talents – and other tracks include "Memphis", "Baby Girl", "NJR", "I've Got The Blues", "The Preacher", "Night Train", "Sherry", "Body & Soul", and "Workshop". 18 tracks in all! There's two stylish British hipsters on the cover, but the album's filled with classic American jazz tracks – each hand-picked by Martin Freeman and Eddie Piller, and served up with plenty of soul! The work here begins in hardbop territory, and moves through 60s soul jazz and more righteous moments in the 70s – and while there's a few more recent tracks, the vibe of the record is very vintage throughout – and really reflects that longtime London love of obscure American records – sounds from a scene that has really taught us a lot over the decades! There's a few tracks here we haven't seen in years, and some great old favorites too – and titles include "Some Kinda Mean" by Sam Jones, "Now At Last" by Blossom Dearie, "Trees & Grass & Things" by Charles Williams, "Cherrystones" by Eugene McDaniels, "The Hipster" by Harold McNair ,"Chains" by Blacks & Blues, "Bend Your Head Down Low" by Geoffrey Stoner, "Sphynx" by Brand New Heavies, "Look At Me Look At You" by Marlena Shaw, "Get Up Off Your Knees" by David Axelrod, "Psychedelic" by Lee Morgan, "Terra Firma Irma" by Joe Gordon, "Rhythm Changes" by Kamasi Washington, "Just In Time To See The Sun" by Leon Thomas, "Bolivia" by Ulf Sandberg, and "Mi Hermano" by Blue Mitchell. Savoy/Craft, Late 40s. New Copy 5 x 10 inch LP set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-done package that celebrates the key contributions that Savoy Records made to the field of jazz on record – as the New Jersey company was one of the first to record the new wave of bebop in the late 40s, and quickly unleashed the music of Charlie Parker and his contemporaries on a host of famous 78rpm singles at the time! This set features many of those key 78 recordings, but focuses on their presentation in a series of 10" LP releases that Savoy did in the early 50s – vinyl packages that compiled the earlier shellac sides into a more durable format – and presented the key efforts that the label made in helping bebop get out of the clubs and onto the turntable! As with other Craft Records packages, the presentation is great – and really upgrades other reissues of the material with great sound, notes, and artwork that really live up to the contents within. 5LP set features all the original 10" LP sleeves, housed in a slipcase, alongside notes and photos – with classic material recorded under the leadership of Milt Jackson, Leo Parker, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, JJ Johnson, Charlie Parker, Kai Winding, Allen Eager, Budd Johnson, Fats Navarro, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Roy Porter, and Serge Chaloff! Riverside/Milestone, Early 60s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Like so many Milestone 2-fers from the 70s, this set combines two excellent 60s hard bop LPs into one nice set! Both sides feature Adderley's trademark soul jazz hard bop hybrid, but in contexts that add a twist to the settings you might otherwise have heard Cannonball in. The first album's a quintet side featuring brother Nat, Wynton Kelly, Victor Feldman, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes with Feldman playing vibes on the tracks that feature Kelly, piano on the ones that don't – and includes "Arriving Soon", "New Delhi", "Winetone", and "Lisa". Cannonball's soulful alto meets the cerebral piano of Bill Evans in a more stripped down setting, with the group filled out by Percy Heath and Connie Kay, for a set that's filled with surprises, and some nice modal moments. The set includes versions of two of Evans' tracks – "Waltz For Debby" and "Know What I Mean?" – plus nice moody takes on other material, like John Lewis' "Venice", Clifford Jordan's "Toy", and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye". A tremendous tribute to the ever-evolving genius of jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas – and a super-expanded live set that puts Dave in the company of classic players like John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, or Dexter Gordon – whose extended live expressions never fail to hold our imagination! The 8CDs of material here were recorded over four nights in 2015 – with Dave's trumpet in the same company as his excellent group on the Brazen Heart album – Jon Irabgon on tenor, Linda Oh on bass, Rudy Royston on drums, and Matt Mitchell on piano – a superb lineup that balances individual expressions with a really coherent sense of soul in the group. Many tunes repeat from night to night, but the solos and conception changes nicely – as you'd find in a box of this nature by John Coltrane – and the whole thing offers up a heck of a bang for your record-buying buck! CBS/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". Nicole blows alongside the bass of Tyron Allen and drums of Kayvon Gordon, players who keep things loose and very open – so that Glover has all this space to express herself with a very unique voice. Mosaic, 1970/1975/1979. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Early and mid 70s big band masterpieces from Charles Tolliver for Strata East – plus a brilliant batch of German recordings from 1979 with Hamburg's great NDR group that was never legitimately issued before now – in an amazing 3CD set from Mosaic! Disc One features the classic Impact – the first album by his legendary group on Strata East – a core quartet that features Tolliver on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Hopps on drums and percussion – all augmented by some larger backings for the session! The core sound is amazing – with free lines that trade back and forth wonderfully, filled with life and a great lyrical sense of energy that Tolliver never had on some of his later sessions. The larger group hardly gets in the way at all – and they're mostly there just to shade in the background, but often drop out during the solos – giving full center stage exposure to Tolliver and Cowell! Tracks include "Ruthie's Heart", "Abscretions", "Household of Saud", and "On the Nile". Disc Two features Impact – an amazingly spiritual effort that really brings together the best strands of sounds running through the underground at the time! The format's a bit similar to Music Inc – with lots of strong lead action from Charles on trumpet, and Stanley Cowell on piano. But this time around, the larger group seems to be more fully integrated into the tunes – there not just to support the soloists, but to rise up with a full, proud sense of majesty that's really amazing. Other players include Cecil McBee and Reggie Workman on basses, Billy Parker and Warren Smith on percussion, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Owens on trumpets, John Gordon and Garnet Brown on trombones, and Charles McPherson, George Coleman, Harold Vick, and Charles Davis on saxes! Titles include great versions of the Tolliver classics "Plight" and "Impact" – plus "Mother Wit", "Lynnsome", and "Grand Max". Disc Three is a hidden gem from Tolliver's career – 1979 radio broadcast sessions with the NDR big band that includes Benny Bailey on trumpet, Herb Geller on alto, Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Lukas Lindholm on bass and Alvin Queen on drums. Here Tolliver plays some of the Strata material with these great European players who really seem to relish the opportunity – with each contributing brilliant solos. Includes "Ruthie's Heart", "Mother's Wit", Grand Max", "Impact" and more. CD

Maybe one of the most soulful records ever cut by British pianist Gordon Beck – even if it appears here for the first time ever! The set's a killer – and has Beck working with vocalist Joy Marshall – a hip female singer who's right up there with the best 60s material by Carmen McRae or Nancy Wilson, and who has a range and sense of power that's maybe even greater than both of them! Equally great are the members of Gordon's group – as a young John McLaughlin plays guitar, the great Tony Oxley plays drums, and the always-excellent Jeff Clyne is on bass – working his instrument with this soulful, stepping vibe that seems to really get the group moving in the right direction. The whole thing's fantastic – a record that could have been issued on late 60s Chess/Cadet Records – and titles include "Sunny", "Telephone Song", "Come Back To Me", "Dr Feelgood", "Gentle Rain", "He Loves Me", and "Goin Out Of My Head". This isn't one of those "phoned in" sessions that seem to turn up way too much in contemporary jazz! The album's a real classic from Dexter's first big "comeback" period – and represents the strength of his Blue Note years at their best! Dizzy GillespieBirk's Works – Verve Big Band Sessions ... CD
Verve, 1956/1957. Used 2 CDs ... $1.99
Seminal work from Dizzy – showing that he was a genius in any form of jazz! In the mid 50s, Diz had one of the hippest big bands going – filled with great young players that included Lee Morgan, Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Benny Golson, Billy Mitchell, and Walter Davis Jr. The work he crafted here was partly an extension of his earlier bop sides, but also a demonstration of his desire to express himself in more expansive forms – kind of a hint of the direction he'd take in the 60s, with his work in Latin, soundtrack, and funk styles. The set combines tracks from 3 different Verve albums – and it also packages the material with a number of previously unissued tracks, and some great liner notes that do a wonderful job of summing up the spirit of the work. Arrangements are by AK Salim, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron, and Dizzy himself – and tracks include "Jordu", "Tin Tin Deo", "Groovin For Nat", "Dizzy's Business", "Jessica's Day", "Doodlin", "Yo No Quiero Bailar", "Birk's Works", "Tangorine", "Umbrella Man", and "Mayflower Rock". 42 tracks in all! CD

Karin Krog with Warne MarshI Remember You ... CD
Spotlite/Century (Japan), 1981. Used ... $14.99
Essential work from vocalist Karin Krog – one in a number of sessions cut with some of the best saxophonists of her time (Dexter Gordon, Archie Shepp, John Surman) – a record that features some incredible late tenor from Warne Marsh, set beautifully alongside one of the few vocalists who could match him! Instrumentation for the record comes only from Warne's tenor and the bass of Red Mitchell – leaving Karin plenty of room to open up with imaginative interpretations of the tunes – and almost letting Marsh emerge as a second "voice" that contributes equally to the album. The approach is wonderful – spare and moody, but extremely soulful – and even familiar chestnuts sound completely fresh in the setting. Titles include "I Remember You", "Trane", "Moody's Mood For Love", "Loverman", and "Speak Low". CD

Fats NavarroNostalgia ... CD
Savoy, 1947. Used ... $9.99
Classic early bebop from trumpter Fats Navarro – a seminal album that brings together earlier famous 78s recorded for Savoy Records! The set features the late great trumpeter leading 3 different small groups – all top-shelf lineups, with players that include Charlie Rouse or Dexter Gordon on tenor, Tadd Dameron or Al Haig on piano, and Art Blakey on drums! The recordings have the raw bebop energy that characterized the best of these Savoy sessions, but Navarro's playing adds touches of lyricism not usually heard on recordings like these. Certainly one of the albums that will convince you why Fats was so great – with the tracks "Barry's Bop", "Dextrose", "Stealing Trash", and "Hollerin' & Screamin". CD

Bernard PurdiePurdie Good! ... LP
Prestige, 1971. Near Mint- ... $33.99 39.99
Bernard Purdie's first album as a leader for Prestige – cut right after he'd hipped up plenty of other sessions for the label with his famous funky drums! The groove here is very much in the best Prestige jazz funk mode of the early 70s – tightly vamping rhythms that draw heavily from Purdie's monstrous drums – and which also offer solo showcase space for Harold Wheeler on electric piano, Ted Dunbar on guitar, Tippy Larkin on trumpet, and Charlie Brown and Warren Daniels on tenor. Rhythm is augmented by Gordon Edwards on Fender bass and Norman Pride on congas – and the grooves hit a variety of modes that show that Purdie could sometimes be a more open-thinking rhythmatist than his funky contemporary Idris Muhammad. Titles include great instrumental versions of "Cold Sweat" and "Montego Bay", plus the originals "Wasteland", "You Turn Me On", and "Purdie Good". LP, Vinyl record album

Horace SilverSilver's Blue ... CD
Epic/Columbia (France), 1956. Used ... $5.99 7.99
Killer early work from Horace Silver – and a rare non-Blue Note session from the 50s! The album's Horace's only date for Columbia, and it's got a feel that's similar to some of the Jazz Messengers' hardbop recordings for the label at the time – cooking with a soulful intensity at the bottom, yet taking off with some tremendously well-carved solos on the top! The group's an all-star ensemble that includes some of the best harbop players of the time – Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Donald Byrd and Joe Gordon on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Kenny Clarke and Art Taylor on drums – all grooving together with Horace as if they'd been backing him up for years. Titles include great originals "Silver's Beat", "Shoutin' Out", and "Hank's Tune – plus versions of "I'll Know" and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". CD

✨✧ Donald ByrdByrd's Eye View (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wailer! This rare 1955 album is one of Donald Byrd's first records as a leader – recorded for the tiny Transition label in Boston, but with a hardbop groove that's right up there with his early work for Savoy and Blue Note. The record is practically a Jazz Messengers session – as it features Art Blakey on drums, Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass – and it's also got the unique aspect of a two-trumpet frontline, as the young Joe Gordon joins Donald on the instrument for the session. Tracks are long and open-ended – with incredibly well-crafted playing that really keeps the set fresh, despite the young age of Donald at the time. Titles include "El Sino", "Doug's Blues", "Hank's Tune", and "Hank's Other Tune". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Blue Note Tone Poet series – heavy cover and vinyl! A very cool replica of the original Transition pressing – down to the bonus notes inside.)

✨✧ Harold LandWest Coast Blues ... LP
Jazzland, 1960. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from Harold Land, and a great set that has a hard soul jazz feel – despite the "west coast" in the title. Harold's playing with a great group that includes Barry Harris, Joe Gordon, and Sam Jones – as well as guitarist Wes Montgomery, who's work on the session really gives it a soulful edge! The cover lists the rhythm section as "all-soul", and it's right, as the accompaniment for Harold here is more sensitive, and more swinging than on most of his other records. The set sparkles with brilliance, and with great relaxed soulful playing. Cuts include "Compulsion", "Ursula", "Terrain", "Klactoveedsedstene", and "West Coast Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Maroon label Orpheum stereo pressing. Cover has light wear, but vinyl is nice and clean.)

✨✧ Jack AshfordHotel Sheet ... CD
Magic Disc/Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest club records ever cut – and one with a great gimmick too! That gimmick is the "hotel sheet" – an instrument created by percussionist Jack Ashford, which is a light piece of metal that's snapped back and worth to create these cool wibbly, wobbly waves of sound – almost like a moog at times, which gives some of these tracks a bit of a P&P Records vibe! Ashford was a member of The Funk Brothers – and a percussionist on countless classic Motown sessions – but this album was recorded in LA with a sweet electric groove, and a mix of strings and funk that almost rivals Jack's only other full album – a rare blacksploitation soundtrack. The set features full arrangements from Paul Riser, orchestrations from Gordon Staples, and the whole thing was recorded at the Marvin Gaye studios – which you can almost hear in Ashford's surprisingly great vocals. The title cut "Hotel Sheet" has this wonderful popping moogy sound that's very nice – and other tracks include "Funky Disco Party", "Shar", "Hi Mom, Hi Al", and "Get Right On Top". CD

Harkit (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great batch of live recordings by Tubby Hayes – caught at Ronnie Scott's during sets in '63, '64 and '65! Ronnie Scott allowed recorder Les Tompkins to tape a number of the jazz greats who came through London and played the historic Ronnie Scott's stage throughout the early 60s, and in doing so he captured a fair bit of history during one of the defining eras in jazz. These recordings of tenor sax giant Tubby Hayes and his crew(s) are another fine document! The set's featured great work by Benny Goodman on drums, Gordon Beck on piano, Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet and others, backing up Hayes on all fronts – whether those are muscular workouts, languid soloing, or bop grooving. Nice!!! Tracks include "Opus Ocean", "A Weaver Of Dreams", "Nobody Else But Me", "On Green Dolphin Street" and "By Myself" – plus a great interview except with the late great saxophonist, conducted by session recorder Les Tompkin's in January of '63! Crucial cuts from The Investigators – a UK lovers rock group, but one who borrow plenty from American soul as well – as you might guess from their look on the cover, which almost makes them appear like some east coast indie act from the early 80s! A surprising classic from the early 80s underground – a record that came to the world from the scene in Milwaukee, where neither the group nor the rest of the world would have expected the album to have such staying power over the decades! And yet, from the very first needle drop, it's hard to imagine otherwise – as the record's got this raw intensity that's not really punk, certainly not new wave – almost an American primitivist energy that really gets to the heart of the matter from the very first note – and goes on to deliver a non-stop testament of angst and longing, set to scratchy guitar and fast-riffing drums! Gordon Gano's vocals perfectly fit the spirit of the songs – and the set's full of classics that include "Blister In The Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", "Gone Daddy Gone", and "Prove My Love". 3LP version features a huge amount of bonus material on the second disc – demos of most tracks for the album, and live recordings from the same time – plus UK single tracks "Ugly" and "Gimme The Car" on the bonus 7" single!
