✨✧ Gathering (Jesse Sharps)Healing Suite ... CD
Village LA, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really powerful project from the LA underground – served up by a group led by Jesse Sharps, who you may remember from classic albums on the Nimbus label – and done at a level that unites the sound of his generation with some of the best currents of more contemporary years! The lineup here is filled with righteous, spiritual giants – the great Dwight Trible on vocals, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Theo Saunders on piano, Robwerto Miranda on bass, Derf Recklaw on congas and percussion – alongside Mercedes Smith on alto, Amos Delone on baritone , and Maia on flute! There's a strong mix of message and music going on here – also delivered with a bit of poetry from Kamau Daaood – and although the set was recorded before the events of 2020, it's got a deep sense of power that really gets at the needs of America in the years after George Floyd. The set begins with a stunningly dark take on "Strange Fruit", then moves into Daaood's equally powerful "Healing Suite" – and soars next on the long "Freedom's Sweet" by Horace Tapscott, before closing with "Mother", a composition by the great Nate Morgan. Slum Village feat Ms Jade & Raje ShwariDisco (radio rmx, main rmx, inst rmx, clean, album, inst) ... 12-inch
Barak, 2002. Near Mint- ... $1.99
The second single from the Slums' Trinity LP, and one of the stronger moments of that album, mixed up nicely by Timbaland! "Disco" is a mid-tempo party groover, with a role on the Slum LP that is similar to the one "Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'" played on De La's second LP. Larry Levan it ain't – there's really not a beat to be found that even comes close to resembling the mid-to-late 70s sound – but it's a very sweet synth washed jam, perfect for a slower club bounce, and featuring the tightly sprung slingshot vocal style that the Slums lace their entire LP with. The vocal track features guest appearances by Ms. Jade and Raje Shwari. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Chucho ValdesLive At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 2000. Used ... $6.99
An excellent album of spare Latin jazz, played by the legendary leader of the Cuban group Irakere! Chucho Valdes is playing here with a small combo that only features bass, drums, and percussion – plus some additional vocal accompaniment by Mayra Caridad Valdes. But the main focus is on Chucho's lively piano talents – some of the best-ever in Afro-Cuban jazz, and graced by a stunning style that's at once starkly modern, yet stepped in a rich Latin tradition. Tracks are nearly all very long – and titles include "Ponte La Clave", "Drume Negrita", "Anabis", "Punto Cubano", "To Bud Powell", and "Lorraine's Habanera". CD

El ChicanoViva Tirado ... LP
Kapp, 1970. Very Good- ... $8.99
Amazing stuff – and the beginning of a strong tradition of west coast funky Latin groups! El Chicano were one of a number of groups to emerge from LA of the 60s – rising forth on a wave of Mexican American pride to come up with a west coast version of the Latin Soul sound that had been emanating from Spanish Harlem a few years earlier. The group had an organ-heavy sound that first scored big on their rendition of Gerald Wilson's "Viva Tirado" – done as a single by the group with a stepping jazz beat that was missing from the earlier version, which worked great with their bubbly organ sound. The album was recorded to follow up the hit – done as a live set after hours at the Kabuki Sukiyaki Restaurant in south LA, and filled with tight jazzy covers 60s groovers like "Cantaloupe Island", "Eleanor Rigby", "Hurt So Bad", and "Coming Home Baby". The record's also got an amazing version of "Quiet Village" – and while it may not be as Latin as some of the group's later work, it's the beginning of a great tradition, and has a sound that was copied endlessly – but rarely matched! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes Kapp inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner, light edge wear & aging.)

Gathering (Jesse Sharps)Leimert Park – Roots & Branches Of Los Angeles Jazz ... CD
Village, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A set that's way more than just the roots and branches of LA jazz – as it also points the way towards a fantastic future in the city's spiritual underground – uniting older and younger players, and unfurling the kind of energy that's really helped to transform things in the 21st Century, while also bringing to light the overlooked legacy of righteous jazz expression in the 70s! The large ensemble is headed by reedman Jesse Sharps – and the group is overflowing with talent, in a lineup that includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Azar Lawrence on alto, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Ndugu Chancler on drums, Dwight Trible on vocals, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and Roberto Miranda on bass – stretching out on long songs that really mix the older spirit of the Nimbus Records scene with some of the new currents in Washington and Atwood Ferguson's creations. Poet Kamau Daaood speaks a bit on the set too – and titles include "Agony In The Garden", "Language Of Saxophones", "Peyote Song III", and "Desert Fairy Princess". CD

Elvin JonesPuttin' It Together ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+ ... $59.99 69.99
Proof that Elvin Jones wasn't just riding on the laurels of the Great One during his years with John Coltrane – as the album's a breakout date that has Jones firmly establishing his own voice in jazz! There's an explosive power here that makes us think that Elvin must have really just been biding his time with Coltrane – waiting for the chance to try out his own new ideas in music, and finding the perfect accompanists here in a trio that includes Jimmy Garrison on bass and a young Joe Farrell on tenor, soprano sax, and flute! The lack of a piano in the group really makes for a sense of new freedom that's totally great – not dreamy, melodic piano-less work, as in some of the LA groups of earlier years – but a searing, soaring intensity that Farrell was a perfect choice to head up. And while the format might serve to be an excuse for Coltrane-styled blowing, the approach here is decidedly not – a more focused, energy driven approach that really makes strong use of Jones' work on the drum kit, throbs with soulful undercurrents from Garrison's bass, and is topped off by angular, effortlessly-blown lines from Farrell – clearly pointing the way towards a generation of players that would emerge in his wake during the 70s. Tracks include "Village Greene", "Reza", "Kei Ko's Birthday March", and "Sweet Little Mama". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Liberty pressing, with Van Gelder stamp! Cover has a small name in one corner – but overall, this is a great copy!)

Nimbus, 1979. New Copy 2CDs ... $13.99 26.99
An excellent double-length set from Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – an extremely righteous ensemble that was one of the hippest things going on the LA jazz scene of the 70s! The vibe is free and spiritual, but it also has a wonderful groove pulsating underneath many of the tracks – that heir to the Impulse Records style that Tapscott and other Nimbus Records artists carried on well into the early 80s. The group here features some of Tapscott's Nimbus labelmates – including Sabir Matteen and Billy Harris on tenor saxes, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Jesse Sharps on soprano sax – and in a way, the album's almost a live summation of all the mighty talents brewing on the Nimbus label at the time! VariousLand Of 1000 Dances – The Complete Rampart Recordings (4CD box set) ... CD
Rampart/Minky, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $35.99 39.98
A fantastic overview of the legendary Rampart Records – one of the strongest soul labels on the LA scene of the 60s, and a company that did some surprisingly compelling work in the 70s too! Rampart's biggest-ever act was Cannibal & The Headhunters – and the set is titled after their classic giant hit – but the company also really had a strong ear to the ground on the scene in East LA – which meant that they worked in a really great blend of modes that included vocal group soul, Latin-styled sounds, and plenty of funk and straighter soul too – before resurfacing in the late 70s with a more eclectic blend of music. This package is the first to really do justice to the complete Rampart legacy – and brings together every single issued by the imprint, who hardly ever put out full albums – a total of 79 tracks that's pretty darn heavy on the 60s, and which includes both the a-sides and b-sides of the singles. There's also a massive book, too – filled with notes on the story of the label, the details of all the songs, and a huge amount of photos – including a section on Rampart artists on the road in the 60s. A fantastic set, and a huge bargain for the price – with work by The Village Callers, Hummingbird 4, The Four Tempos, The Majestics, East Bay Soul Brass, Cannibal & The Headhunters, Phil & Del, Randy Thomas, Sammy Lee & The Summits, The Mixtures, Skylite, Eastside Connection, Graciela Palafox, and Raven. ✨✧ KinksArthur – Or The Fall & Decline Of The British Empire ... LP
Reprise, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A true masterpiece of late 60s pop – music originally recorded for a TV special in 1969 – and one of the Kinks' greatest albums ever! The semi-concept album traces the woes, worries, and hopes of a British family, as one half is on the verge of emigration to Australia. The work comes out of the sort of songwriting that Ray Davies had been perfecting on albums like Village Green and Something Else – but the overall style is more sophisticated, yet not nearly as self-indulgent as some of the 70s concept clunkers. Instead, the songs are brilliantly tight, and stand on their own well past the concept of the original album. Titles include "Victoria", "Brainwashed", "Australia", "Shangri-La", "Mr Churchill Says", and "Yes Sir No Sir". LP, Vinyl record album

A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! The booklet is filled with notes and history in both English and French – and titles include "The Beat Generation" by Bob McFadden, "High School Drag" by Phillipa Fallon, "The Nazz" by Lord Buckley, "American Haikus" by Jack Kerouac & Al Cohn, "Route 66" by Bobby Troup, "Gator Tail (part 2)" by Cootie Williams, "Rock & Roll" by Wild Bill Moore, "Killin Jive" by Cats & The Fiddle, "You'se A Viper" by Stuff Smith, "Scrapple From The Apple" by Les Double Six, "Kookie's Mad Pad" by Ed Byrnes, "So What" by Eddie Jefferson, "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg, "I Sing Of Olaf" by Roger Steffans, "Say Man" by Bo Diddley, "Shulie A Bop" by Sarah Vaughan, and "The Rocket Ship Show" by Jocko Henderson. Herbie Mann's at the Village Gate – really wailing away in a set of extended numbers that not only set a whole new standard for live recording in jazz, but which also pushed forward the role of the flute in the music as well! There's a heck of a lot of soul in the grooves here – served up by a totally cooking rhythm section that includes basses from Ben Tucker and Ahmed Abdul-Malik, percussion from Chief Bey and Ray Mantilla, and drums from Rudy Collins – plus some especially great work on vibes from Haygood Hardy, sounding beautifully chromatic underneath Herbie's sharp-edged work on flute! Blue MitchellBlue Mitchell ... LP
Mainstream/Newland, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99 On August 26, 2022
A key 70s album from Blue Mitchell – and a set that's perfectly balanced between the lyricism of his mid 60s sides for Blue Note, and the electric funk of later years! The tracks are long, and have a really great vibe – plenty of room for Mitchell's sweet trumpet in the lead, with longer solos than on his last funk albums for Blue Note – and given a nice sense of bounce, a groove that's almost modal at times, by a group that features Walter Bishop on piano, Larry gales on bass, and Doug Sides on drums. Bishop's clearly playing some Fender Rhodes at times – ala his Black Jazz albums – and the group also features some of the most righteous tenor work we've ever heard from Jimmy Forrest, an artist we really know best for sides from a decade before. Titles include a killer reading of "Soul Village" – later recorded famously by Bishop – plus "Blues For Thelma", "Queen Bey", "Mi Hermano", and "Are You Real". LP, Vinyl record album

Key musical figures in the Touareg independence movement – and a very hip group of nomads working with a lot of guitars! There's a laidback pulse to the music that might run counter to their political presence, but the music has a very hypnotic feel that pulls you in slowly, then doesn't let go – lots of interplay between the guitar lines, which are interwoven with vocals, and mixed with just a bit of percussion. Walter Bishop Jr.Soul Village ... LP
Muse, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of a rare few electric albums from the great Walter Bishop Jr – a pianist who started during the bop years, but really grew into new modes in the 70s! The set's an album on Muse, but one with the same hip grooves as Walter Bishop's pair of excellent albums for the Black Jazz label – and like those gems, this set features Bishop working on Fender Rhodes – hitting a groove we never would have expected in the old days, and really going for a style that's at the hippest end of the soul jazz spectrum of the 70s! Tunes are a mix of funky fusion and modal, spiritual styles – and other players include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Gerry Niewood on tenor and flute, and George Young on soprano and alto sax – and the horns are all arranged tightly by Mitch Farber, in a way that adds an extra edge to the record, but still leaves plenty of space for Bishop's solo flights on the keys. Titles include great versions of "Soul Village", "Coral Keys", and "Soul Turnaround" – plus the cuts "Philadelphia Bright", "Sweet Rosa", and "Valerie". LP, Vinyl record album

Dollar BrandAnatomy Of A South African Village (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $24.99
Tremendous early work from South African pianist Dollar Brand (aka Abdullah Ibrahim) – exactly the kind of sounds that set him apart from so many other musicians at the time, and which brought him great attention on the European scene of the 60s! The tunes are long and open – strongly characterized by that rhythmic pulse that Brand borrows from his roots, but inflected with all these dark modern tones on piano – territory that Randy Weston was attempting a few years before, but which Dollar Brand really knocks out of the park with a recording like this! The rest of the group features Johnny Gertze on bass and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – both players who are really well-tuned to the groove – and the set features Brand's originals "Anatomy Of A South African Village", "Tintiyana" and "Honey, plus versions of the Monk tunes, "Round Midnight" and "Light Blue". ✨✧ John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $69.99
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here features McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – plus the very important addition of Eric Dolphy on the leadoff tune "Spiritual" – a number that features Dolphy on bass clarinet alongside Coltrane's tremendous tenor, as both players open up on extended solos that take the tune to nearly 14 minutes in length! Other numbers omit Dolphy, but are still totally great – and Coltrane picks up the soprano sax for a classic reading of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the group shifts slightly for the freer "Chasin The Trane", a 16 minute romp done with only tenor sax, drums, and bass – the latter of which is handled here by Jimmy Garrison instead of Workman. Impulse, 1966. Used ... $9.99
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! The album's a great counterpart to the first Vanguard session – as it takes all of the bold, soaring energy of that date, and balances it with the newly introspective sound of the later Coltrane years – plus some of the freedoms learned from the Love Supreme era. The group here showcases the new territory explored by Coltrane – with Trane himself on tenor, soprano, and a bit of bass clarinet (echoing earlier Dolphy), plus Pharoah Sanders on additional tenor, Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rasheid Ali on drums. The album only features 2 long tracks – an incredibly soulful version of "Naima", and a very firey version of "My Favorite Things", but one that begins with a haunting bass solo by Garrison! CD

Stan GetzGetz At The Gate – The Stan Getz Quartet Live At The Village Gate 1961 ... CD
Verve, 1961. Used ... $14.99
A fantastic lost slice of work from Stan Getz – one that features an early 60s group that was barely recorded at all, and which really shows Getz stretching out right before his bossa nova years! The quartet features a very young Steve Kuhn on piano, the great Roy Haynes on drums, and John Neves on bass – a lineup that has only been featured on Stan's album with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer from the same year – but which sounds very different here without a second horn player in the lead! The tracks are long, and very open – and Stan's hitting modes that are a lot more like the sounds he'd reach during his Sweet Rain years, with the group that included Chick Corea – making this record a key bridge backwards, showing what might have happened to early 60s Getz, had the bossa nova recordings not dominated that time. Stan's tone is fantastic – and the solos are very open and fluid, given plenty of inspiration by Kuhn's piano, which is still yet to find its later voice, but which definitely has the right sense of space. Haynes and Neves are wonderful too – especially the latter, who's got this tone that's well-placed, but never dominating – a great complement to Roy's always-creative sense of rhythm. The whole thing's a delight – as essential an addition to Stan's catalog as the discovery of the Nobody Else But Me album in the CD era. Titles include "Wildwood", "Impressions", "Airegin", "Blues", "Woody N You", "Where Do You Go", "Yesterday's Gardenias", "It's You Or No One", and "Stella By Starlight". CD

✨✧ Herbie Hancock & Foday Musa SusoVillage Life ... LP
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint- ... $14.99
An early world music/jazz collaboration production from Bill Laswell, a format he'd return to again and again in later years. For the most part, the tunes seem to be excursions on Musa Suso's native Gambian rhythms, plucked out as gentle arpeggios on the Kora, with Herbie's subtle keys and synths complementing nicely. Our favorite though is the Hancock somposition "Early Warning", a spacious keyboard piece with delicate accompaniment by Musa Suso. Includes three other pieces "Moon/Light", "Ndan Ndan Nyaria" and "Kanatente". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1962. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Long, lean, and later work by Coleman Hawkins – recorded in a beautifully stripped-down and free setting at the Village Gate! The tracks are all pushing the 10 minute mark – and feature Hawk soloing in that open, exploratory way he was using during the time – a mix of older traditions and slight moments of modernism – carried off with gentle accompaniment from a trio led by Tommy Flanagan on piano. The tenor dominates – and dominates beautifully – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "Mack The Knife", and "Talk Of The Town". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe HendersonState Of The Tenor – Live At The Village Vanguard Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, 1985. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A real moment of genius for Joe Henderson from the 80s – a spare trio session, recorded live at the Village Vanguard, in a mode that recalls Sonny Rollins classic sets there for Blue Note! And while Sonny often performed heavily in a trio setting, unfettered by chords in the rhythm section – this is a unique date for Joe, and he sounds brilliant throughout! Ron Carter and Al Foster provide a crisp but elastic foundation for Henderson's burnished melodies and solos in a very spacious setting – and this first volume features the tracks "Beatrice", "Friday The Thirteenth", "Happy Reunion", "Loose Change", "Ask Me Now", and "Isotope". A smoking funky set from early 70s Stax Records – the only album we've ever seen from Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers, and a stone cooker all the way through! The sound is hard and heavy on most numbers – with loads of funky 45-styled riffs – and the core group is a nicely self-contained unit, with a lot of focus on the rhythm section – but they also get some great help here from the Memphis Horns, who blow over the top beautifully, and add a nicely soulful vibe to the record! Drums are nice and hard – and titles include the killer "The Dryer (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Razorback Circus", "Robot", "Midnight At Riley's", "Don't Tell Me Nothing About My Woman", "Patch It Up", and "I'll Be Your Doctor Man". ✨✧ Elvin JonesLive At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1968. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Prime post-Coltrane material from Elvin Jones – featuring his "power trio" style of operation, with one great sax player out front, and Jones kicking it in the back with the bass player! In this case, the sax player is George Coleman – who's really finding a voice of his own in these late 60s years, and really makes the most of the extended space of the album to stretch out, soar, and show off his ever-growing talent for a powerful solo! Wilbur Little is on bass, playing nice round warm notes to offset Jones' edgey playing – and the group's joined by trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson on one track – who brings in a soulful edge that's mighty nice. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Laura", "Mister Jones", and "By George". CD

Thad Jones & Mel LewisThad Jones & Mel Lewis Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Solid State, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
One of the first albums in a long line of successes from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – recorded live in their home turf at the Village Vanguard! The group at this point was a freshly-created outfit filled with some of the best large group jazz soloists of the time – players that included Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels, Pepper Adams, Richard Williams, and Bob Brookmeyer – not to mention Jones and Lewis themselves! The style here is very much in the mode that the Clarke Boland Band was crafting in Europe during the same period – a redefinition of the larger jazz group, in a way that allowed it to swing with the dynamic energy and soul of some of the smaller combos of the 60s. And while the Jones/Lewis group had many years over which to hone their craft, they've never sounded better than on these initial recordings – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Samba Con Getchu", "A That's Freedom", "Bachafillen", and "Little Pixie". Joe LovanoJoe Lovano Quartets – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 1994/1995. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
A really great showcase for the budding talents of Joe Lovano – heard here at a crucial point in his rise to glory on Blue Note! Joe had already been blowing greatness on tenor for years before this set, but these Village Vanguard recordings put Lovano in the same heady space as Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard on Blue Note – by really allowing a great sense of open, spontaneous expression that stands as a nice counterpoint to his well-conceived studio work – a very earnest demonstration of Lovano's rich talents as a saxophonist. Joe plays soprano and C melody sax as well – and the group features always-great work on trumpet and flugelhorn from Tom Harrell, plus Anthony Cox on bass and Billy Hart on drums. Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good ... $4.99
The title track was most likely meant to be something of a hit for Les McCann back in his early Pacific Jazz years – and while it maybe didn't hit the heights of the charts at the time, it's still a great little cooker that leads off a tasty little set! The group here is Les' "Ltd" combo – with Ron Jefferson on drums and Herbie Lewis on bass – almost a west coast answer to the classic Ramsey Lewis group in Chicago, although one that plays here with a slightly more laidback sort of groove. Jefferson's rhythm is always a treat, and Herbie's bass is nice and sharp too – and tracks include some good originals by Les, including "The Shampoo", "Smile Stacey", "Someone Stole My Chitlins", "Filet Of Soul", and "You Thought I Knew" – plus versions of "Out Of This World" and "Woody N You". Pharoah SandersVillage Of The Pharoahs ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $18.99
An overlooked gem from Pharoah Sanders' years on Impulse – one that has him breaking the pattern a bit, but in a really great way! The session mixes up more shorter songs than before – still all quite spiritual, but also a bit more focused – in a way that packs an incredible punch, even at more contemplative moments. Players include Sanders regulars – like Norman Connors on drums and Cecil McBee on bass – but also some key newcomers, like Art Webb on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, and Jimmy Hopps on drums – making one of his excellent Impulse appearances for the record. But perhaps even more striking are the vocals on the set – done often by Sedatrius Brown, who sings partially in a Leon Thomas spiritual mode – but also hits notes that are a bit earthier, and which are picked up in added vocalizations by members of the group. Sanders himself plays soprano and tenor sax – and titles include the expanded "Village Of The Pharoahs" suite, plus "Went Like It Came", "Memories Of Lee Morgan", "Myth", and "Mansion Worlds". CD

✨✧ Woody ShawStepping Stones – Live At The Village Vanguard (expanded edition) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1978. Used ... $15.99
Soulful brilliance from Woody Shaw – a searing live set that matches the power of earlier classics like Moontrane and Blackstone Legacy! The album's got Woody working with a heck of a great group – Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all of whom come together with just the right mix of earthy grooving and spiritual searching that puts Woody in his best light. Jefferson is especially great – as it's his soaring work on reeds that really give the album a sense of spirit – but credit should also be giving to the well-knit rhythm team, whose ability to push out in flowing lines of power really raises the energy of the performance. Titles include "Stepping Stone", "In A Capricornian Way", "Seventh Avenue", and "Theme For Maxine". CD features 3 bonus tracks, 2 unissued – "Blues For Ball", "All Things Being Equal Are Not", and "Escape Velocity". CD

✨✧ Horace Silver QuintetDoin' The Thing (At The Village Gate) ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint- ... $39.99
One of the few live recordings ever done by Horace Silver during his Blue Note years – a real surprise, considering what a crowd pleaser he was at the time! The set catches Horace working with that great quintet that graced most of his best early Blue Notes – with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor, Gene Taylor on bass, and the always-amazing Roy Brooks on drums. The groove is tight tight tight, and the live set crackles with the same sort of energy as the live sessions by the Jazz Messengers on Blue Note – rolling soul jazz, but with a bit of a lyrical touch to flesh things out. Because of the live setting, tracks are a bit longer than the usual Silver session – which makes for freer soloing, and a bit of a rougher edge that keeps things lively throughout. Titles include "The Gringo", "Filthy McNasty", and "Doin' The Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

Long Player/Ne'Astra, 1997. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the long version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy 2 LP Gatefold ... $20.99 22.98
It's hard to imagine Greece in the 20th century being described as primeval, but there's definitely a timeless vibe to the music on this collection – all pulled from vintage 78rpm discs that are filled with earthy percussion, exotic reed lines, and some especially nice stringed instrumentation! Most numbers seem to be instrumental, and although the date range in the title is large, the bulk of the recordings here are from the late 20s and early 30s – prime material for the expansion of the 78 market into more regional territories – of the sort that have been documented on similar collections by the Honest Jons or Dust To Digital labels. This collection is an initial foray by the Third Man group, in collaboration with collector Christopher King – who provided all the discs used in the collection – and despite the age and the format, there's a strong sense of clarity throughout – possibly because most of the material was recorded in studios rather than in the field. The set comes with a nice set of notes, a cover illustration by Robert Crumb, and 28 tracks that include "Sousta Rethymniotiki" by G Canteris and G Gombakis, "Ousak Tsiftelli" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Selfos" by Demetrios Jalkias", "Golfo" (Anonymous), "Syrtos Politikos" by Kyr Keravnos, "Kritiki Sousta" by A Karavitas & G Marianos, "Tzarama" by Nikos Karakostas and M Lakkergis, "Platanos" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Mirologi-Epirotiko Makedoniko" by Elias Karathimos, and "Kotta Mou" by Antonios Sakelarou. Vanguard, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most stripped-down records from the early years of Larry Coryell – but one of the most powerful, too – as the record sometimes has Larry singing along with his guitar, in an effortless blend of trippy rock and jazz! The date's a live one – and the trio features Marvin Bronson on bass and Harry Wilkison on drums – both players who are super-tight, and move through lots of amazing rhythm patterns on the longer tracks on the set – which maybe demonstrate the growing power of the young guitarist more than his studio work of the time. Given the structure of the group, and the very expressive work on electric guitar, the whole thing's almost got a Hendrix-into-jazz sort of vibe – although Larry "sings" mostly with his guitar instead of his voice. Titles include "The Opening", "Can You Follow", "Beyond These Chilling Winds", "Entaredecendo En Saudade", and "After Later". LP, Vinyl record album

The set is a legendary batch of trio tracks that feature Sonny working in a format that is incredibly free for the time, and which show him as more of a modernist than a bopper – although his solos are still pretty darn fantastic from a bop perspective – stretching out in free, piano-less space – really cutting some amazing edges, and blown in tones we might never have expected from Rollins a few years before. The group is beautifully open ended – with Wilbur Ware on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, and both of them in their best mode of the late 50s. Titles include "Softly As In A Morning Sunset", "Sonny Moon For Two", and "Striver's Row". Great stuff, and one of the best sides that Blue Note ever cut! LP, Vinyl record album

DIW/Somethin Cool (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from a perfectly-matched trio – an all-star lineup, even though pianist Geri Allen was just at the start of her career – and a group who'd already given the world a few different studio albums on other labels! The set follows up with more material from the group's sessions for DIW at the Village Vanguard – and trust us, the material here is every bit as great as the work that was first issued decades back – a perfect balance between the lyrical flights of Geri Allen on the piano, the warmly round basslines of Charlie Haden, and the measured drum work of Paul Motian – a set that's free of ego, and which really has all three players working in wonderfully sympathetic company. Titles include "Fiasco", "In Walked Bud", "Obtuse Angles", "Two Women From Padua", "Mambo Jumbo", "Song For The Whales", "Dance Of Infidels", "Dancing In The Dark", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was". An album that definitely lives up to its title – thanks to a strong embrace of funky boogie styles, but served up here with a sweet Nigerian twist! Some cuts are heavy funk right from the start – clearly inspired by Kool & The Gang and other sharp-edged American groups of the 70s – while others have a slightly looser rhythmic approach, but one that still grooves nicely, too – all given some great energy by the vocals of Steve Black, whose style of singing is nicely playful, and almost as bubbling as the instrumentation! The title track has this really cool mix of electronics and dub – and titles include "Brand New Wayo", "Igholoye", "Precious Tim", "Village Boogie", "When You Know What's Wrong", "Fun In The Street", and "Step Out When You're Down". ✨✧ John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard – Master Takes ... CD
Impulse, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great live set from Cedar Walton's Eastern Rebellion group – still held down by the core team of Walton and drummer Billy Higgins, and featuring some great tenor work from Ralph Moore, plus bass by David Williams. Moore's presence is always a welcome thing on any session – and the longer live tracks on this session really let him stretch out with the kind of imaginative blowing we've always come to expect in his work. Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. The session was caught live at the Village Vanguard on the night of June 25, 1961 – and titles include longish takes on "Solar", "Jade Visions", "Gloria's Step", and "Alice In Wonderland". CD

A great little set from that time when Milt Jackson was fronting a group that also included Jimmy Heath on tenor – a wonderful pairing of talents that made for some of Milt's most soulful sides of the 60s! Heath's sharp-edged tone is a great contrast to Jackson's smoother touch on the vibes – and the pair are supported here by rhythm from Hank Jones on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all great players who bring plenty of personal inflection to their work on this live date. Titles include a great version of Heath's "Gemini" – plus Jackson's "Bags Of Blue", "Gerri's Blues", and "Ignunut Oil" – plus takes on "Little Girl Blue" and "Time After Time". LP, Vinyl record album

The Village Vanguard seemed to be one of the greatest settings for the Great Jazz Trio – a place where the group of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums could really stretch out in the kind of loose, open lines that made their 70s albums so great! This set's the third that the trio recorded at the Vanguard – and it's very much in the best spirit of its predecessors – gently soulful, with a strong focus on the individual talents of the players, yet nary a moment of overindulgence. Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Thad Jones & Mel LewisPresenting Thad Jones & Mel Lewis & The Jazz Orchestra/Live At The Village Vanguard/Big Band Sound Featuring Miss Ruth Brown ... CD
Solid State/BGO (UK), 1966/1967. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of classics from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra! First up is the initial Presenting album – great music by one of the hippest large American ensembles of the late 60s – almost a US equivalent to the groovy sound of the Clark Boland Big Band over in Europe! Trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis had already made some great music together on their own – but once they came together in a record like this, they really found a great new direction for their energy – a bold musical force that's strong enough to also encompass the rich talents of players who include Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Joe Farrell on tenor, Jerome Richardson on soprano sax, Richard Williams on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer and Tom McIntosh on trombones, Hank Jones on piano, and Richard Davis on bass! The sound is full, but never overwhelming – and like the Clark Boland group, this one has a great way of breaking open to allow key soloists to have some great space on their own – a modern approach, and one that still never has the band losing its groove. Titles include "ABC Blues", "Mean What You Say", "Three & One", and "Once Around". The next album was recorded live in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis home turf at the Village Vanguard! On the last album in the set, Ruth Brown joins the big band of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – in a set that's a real standout in the career of all three artists! Thad and Mel already have a pretty great groove going at this point – a large ensemble approach to jazz, yet one that's swingingly soulful – very much on a par with some of Gerald Wilson's hip work of the same time at time. And adding in Ruth Brown's vocals is a great choice – as she not only needs a great showcase like this for her amazing voice, but also because she really helps unlock a soulful sort of energy that the group always had in their instrumental music. The approach is a bit like some of Etta Jones' best 60s recordings – a nice shift for Brown – and titles include "Black Coffee", "Fine Brown Frame", "You Won't Let Go", "Trouble In Mind", and "Be Anything (But Be Mine)". Killer new breed Gypsy music from Romania! The group plays original tunes in a traditional vein, but kit drummer Marian Dinu infuses the proceedings with a winning funky backbeat. Additionally, the record was mixed by German producer Shantel – a key figure in the emerging Balkan underground and a remixer for the Electric Gypsyland project – for maximum propulsion. Riverside/Concord, 1962. New Copy ... $4.99 11.98
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's done in a similar spacious mode – with plenty of longish tracks that build upon the core groove set down by Joe Zawinul's piano, Sam Jones' bass, and Louis Hayes' drums – a perfect backdrop for the creative and complicated solos of Cannon on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, and Yusef Lateef on tenor, flute, and oboe! The date was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1962 – and titles include "Gemini", "Planet Earth", "Dizzy's Business", "Syn-anthesia", "Scotch & Water", and "Cannon's Theme". CD
