✨✧ Gathering (Jesse Sharps)Healing Suite ... LP
Village LA/P-Vine (Japan), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really powerful project from the LA underground – served up by a group led by Jesse Sharps, who you may remember from classic albums on the Nimbus label – and done at a level that unites the sound of his generation with some of the best currents of more contemporary years! The lineup here is filled with righteous, spiritual giants – the great Dwight Trible on vocals, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Theo Saunders on piano, Robwerto Miranda on bass, Derf Recklaw on congas and percussion – alongside Mercedes Smith on alto, Amos Delone on baritone , and Maia on flute! There's a strong mix of message and music going on here – also delivered with a bit of poetry from Kamau Daaood – and although the set was recorded before the events of 2020, it's got a deep sense of power that really gets at the needs of America in the years after George Floyd. The set begins with a stunningly dark take on "Strange Fruit", then moves into Daaood's equally powerful "Healing Suite" – and soars next on the long "Freedom's Sweet" by Horace Tapscott, before closing with "Mother", a composition by the great Nate Morgan. ✨✧ Chucho ValdesLive At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 2000. Used ... $4.99
An excellent album of spare Latin jazz, played by the legendary leader of the Cuban group Irakere! Chucho Valdes is playing here with a small combo that only features bass, drums, and percussion – plus some additional vocal accompaniment by Mayra Caridad Valdes. But the main focus is on Chucho's lively piano talents – some of the best-ever in Afro-Cuban jazz, and graced by a stunning style that's at once starkly modern, yet stepped in a rich Latin tradition. Tracks are nearly all very long – and titles include "Ponte La Clave", "Drume Negrita", "Anabis", "Punto Cubano", "To Bud Powell", and "Lorraine's Habanera". CD

Barak, 2002. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second single from the Slums' Trinity LP, and one of the stronger moments of that album, mixed up nicely by Timbaland! "Disco" is a mid-tempo party groover, with a role on the Slum LP that is similar to the one "Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'" played on De La's second LP. Larry Levan it ain't – there's really not a beat to be found that even comes close to resembling the mid-to-late 70s sound – but it's a very sweet synth washed jam, perfect for a slower club bounce, and featuring the tightly sprung slingshot vocal style that the Slums lace their entire LP with. The vocal track features guest appearances by Ms. Jade and Raje Shwari. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Joe HendersonState Of The Tenor – Live At The Village Vanguard Vol 2 ... CD
Blue Note, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real moment of genius for Joe Henderson from the 80s – a spare trio session, recorded live at the Village Vanguard, in a mode that recalls Sonny Rollins classic sets there for Blue Note! And while Sonny often performed heavily in a trio setting, unfettered by chords in the rhythm section – this is a unique date for Joe, and he sounds brilliant throughout! Ron Carter and Al Foster provide a crisp but elastic foundation for Henderson's burnished melodies and solos in a very spacious setting – and this second volume features the tracks "Boo Boo's Birthday", "Cheryl", "Y Ya La Quiero", "Soulville", and "The Bead Game". Rampart, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A landmark bit of LA funk – the one and only album cut by the fantastic Village Callers, a hip combo with an equal talent for handling soul, Latin, and funk! This set was recorded live at the Plush Bunny – the kind of cool small club we wish we could have attended – and it features a great range of excellent numbers, including the group's famous reading of "Hector", known by many for its great break on the intro! (And just in case you're wondering, the famous version is the one from this album – as the 45 features the live cut too, and there was never a studio take.) The album also includes a great version of Joao Donato's "The Frog" – done in a skipping Sergio Mendes style – plus many other groovy cuts! Plus, this reissue also features 2 bonus cuts – "Evil Ways" and "I'm Leaving" – both not on the original LP! LP, Vinyl record album

A set that's overflowing with genius from the LA scene of the 70s – a larger lineup of key players, all directed by pianist Horace Tapscott at a time when he was doing some of his greatest music on the planet! Tapscott is great in a trio or solo – but we really love him when he's able to direct his spirit towards a like-minded group of musicians – something he definitely does here at the helm of a fantastic lineup that features the flutes of Adele Sebastian and Kafi Roberts, alto clarinet of Herbert Callies, tuba of Red Callender, trombone of Lester Robertson, basses of David Bryant and Alan Hines, congas of Daoude Woods, and triple tenors of James Andrews, Sabir Mateen, and Billie Harris! This incarnation of the group makes for a full, righteous performance throughout – on titles that include "Lush Life", "Desert Fairy Princess", "Dee Bee's Dance", and "Village Dance". CD

Nimbus, 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soaring spiritual sounds from this legendary ensemble – finally given a longer look at their famous series of performances at the Immanuel United church in LA! The mighty Horace Tapscott is at the lead of the group on piano – and the list of other players is almost an all-star lineup from the hipper corners of the LA scene of the time – Billie Harris on soprano sax, Sabir Mateen on tenor, Adele Sebasian and Aubrey Hart on flutes, Lester Robinson on trombone, Everett Brown on drums, and Daoude Woods on congas – plus double basses, from Alan Hines and David Bryant – who create a wonderfully rhythmic vibe at the core! The set begins with a superb reading of "Village Dance", which is driven by the basses with lots of modal energy – the moves into other great compositions by Tapscott and Jesse Sharps – readings of "Song Of Emanon", "Sea Wife", "Dee Bee's Dance", and "Mykowski's First Fifth". Nimbus, 1979. New Copy 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra steps out here in a very large version of the ensemble – led by the great Horace Tapscott on piano, and stretching out on some very long tunes that are filled with strong solo work from different members of the group! Key players include Adele Sebastian and Aubrey Hart on flute, Desta Walker and Sabir Mateen on tenor, Billie Harris on soprano sax, Louis Spears on cello, Lester Robertson on trombone, Johnny Williams on baritone, and Tapscott on piano – most of whom are musicians you might know from the classic set of Nimbus label material from the LA scene at the time. The vibe here is maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sun Ra and his Arkestra – and this release, like others in the series, marks the first time this music is available to the public! Titles include long takes on "Noissesprahs", "Jitterbug Waltz", "Village Dance", and "Many Nights Ago" – plus the shorter "Crepuscule With Nellie" and "Middle Age Madness". CD

✨✧ KinksArthur – Or The Decline & Fall Of The British Empire ... CD
Pye/PRT (UK), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A true masterpiece of late 60s pop – music originally recorded for a TV special in 1969 – and one of the Kinks' greatest albums ever! The semi-concept album traces the woes, worries, and hopes of a British family, as one half is on the verge of emigration to Australia. The work comes out of the sort of songwriting that Ray Davies had been perfecting on albums like Village Green and Something Else – but the overall style is more sophisticated, yet not nearly as self-indulgent as some of the 70s concept clunkers. Instead, the songs are brilliantly tight, and stand on their own well past the concept of the original album. Titles include "Victoria", "Brainwashed", "Australia", "Shangri-La", "Mr Churchill Says", and "Yes Sir, No Sir". CD

The classic "Pink Panther Theme" should be familiar enough to you, but there's loads of other nice numbers – like "Something For Sellers", "Piano & Strings", "The Village Inn", "The Tiber Tiwst", and "Cortina". ✨✧ VariousWakuenai – Music For Shape-Shifters – Field Recordings from the Amazonian Lowlands 1981 to 1985 ... LP
Sublime Frequencies, Early 1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set of field recordings, but one that has a very different approach than usual – as the sounds here were initiated by a special sort of accident, in which an anthropologist left behind his recording equipment in a remote Venezuelan village – then returned later to find that the villagers had recorded all sorts of amazing sounds on their own! Those recordings led to a musical journey to discover further aspects of the remote Wakuenai culture – presented here in a mix of tracks that often have some very unusual use of woodwind instruments and trumpets, alongside percussion and vocalizations – but almost always with more of a larger sense of sonic texture rather than more conventional tunes or tales. The set distils recordings made over the space of a few short years in the Upper Rio Negro area – and titles include "Men Playing Trumpets In Canoe", "Double Duet Of Yapurutu & Tsikota", "The Sound That Opened The World", "Ten Men Playing In The Village Plaza", and "Yaraki Rum Songs & Sexual Jokes". The birth of a sound and the birth of a legend – Martin Denny's first album in the Exotica series, and a record so great it named an entire genre! Denny certainly didn't invent the tropical style of easy listening that came to be known as "exotica" in the 50s – but with a record like this, he delivered the goods better than anyone else – by taking away all the too-sweet styles of Hawaiian music, and serving up a stripped-down, jazzy kind of sound! The album features Denny's classic original quartet – with Arthur Lyman on vibes and Augie Colon on bongos – and titles include "Stone God", "Jungle Flower", "Busy Port", "Lotus Land", and his hit recording of "Quiet Village". The macho aesthetic gets redefined for a whole new audience – as The Village People play with a pastiche of masculine images from daily life, all recast for the post-Stonewall generation! The group bring camp back firmly for the 70s – and are still one of the best-remembered mainstream disco acts of the time – thanks to catchy, poppy grooves that had most of the country humming their tunes, even if they didn't agree with their sexual politics. Grooves are by the hit team that made most of the VP albums strong – Horace Ott arranging, Gypsy Lane backing, and Jacques Morali at the glorious helm of the whole thing – and titles include "Macho Man", "I Am What I Am", "Key West", and "Sodom & Gomorrah". A key 70s album from Blue Mitchell – and a set that's perfectly balanced between the lyricism of his mid 60s sides for Blue Note, and the electric funk of later years! The tracks are long, and have a really great vibe – plenty of room for Mitchell's sweet trumpet in the lead, with longer solos than on his last funk albums for Blue Note – and given a nice sense of bounce, a groove that's almost modal at times, by a group that features Walter Bishop on piano, Larry gales on bass, and Doug Sides on drums. Bishop's clearly playing some Fender Rhodes at times – ala his Black Jazz albums – and the group also features some of the most righteous tenor work we've ever heard from Jimmy Forrest, an artist we really know best for sides from a decade before. Titles include a killer reading of "Soul Village" – later recorded famously by Bishop – plus "Blues For Thelma", "Queen Bey", "Mi Hermano", and "Are You Real". CD

Jason AdasiewiczRoscoe Village – The Music Of Roscoe Mitchell ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2023. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
The music of Roscoe Mitchell, served up here in a really amazing setting – all solo vibes, handled by Jason Adasiewicz, in a style that's very different than Roscoe's original versions of these tunes! If you've ever heard Adasiewicz solo, you'll already dig what's going on here – work on vibes that's deeply resonant, warmly chromatic, and full of some of the most human, honest, open expressions we've ever heard on the instrument! Jason's always been part of the avant underground in Chicago, but he's also a very spiritual player too – a quality that really comes out in a setting like this – as he unlocks very different currents in tunes that Mitchell originally presented on his own albums, or with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago. The whole thing is wonderfully hypnotic throughout – and titles include "Congliptious", "Old", "Carefree", "The Waltz", "Toro/Jo Jar", "The Key", "A Jackson In Your House", and "Daddy Rollin Stone". Essential stuff! This 2 CD set includes the entirety of Albert Ayler's Live In Greenwich Village album – plus a huge amount of previously unreleased live material, played by the Ayler group in New York, during 1966 and 1967. Ayler's brother Don is on trumpet, and other players include Joel Freedman, George Steele, Bill Fowell, Beaver Harris, Sunny Murray, Alan Silva, and Henry Grimes. The tracks have the same intensity of Ayler's ESP work – and many tunes are quite long, very free and open. Titles include "Light In Darkness", "Divine Peacemaker", "Angels", "Omega Is The Alpha", "Universal Thoughts", "Change Has Come", "Infinite Spirit", and "Spiritual Rebirth". 14 tracks in all – and one of the most important slices of Ayler's career! Impulse, 1961. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 44.99
A lost slice of work from the mighty John Coltrane – and a set that features the equally great Eric Dolphy up on stage with Trane at the Village Gate! These never-issued recordings are every bit as wonderful as the Village Vanguard material recorded during the same year – with the group moving with boundless energy, maybe even at a level that they wouldn't show on studio recordings for a few years later – bold piano from McCoy Tyner, superb bass from Reggie Workman, and unbridled drums from Elvin Jones – all given further inspiration by the presence of Dolphy, who blows bass clarinet and flute on the record! Trane is already really taking off with the soprano sax, which gets plenty of beautiful solo space here – on tunes that include a rare live take on "Africa", plus an early reading of "Impressions", and "My Favorite Things", "When Lights Are Low", and "Greensleeves" – the latter of which is done in a sublime modal style. Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $139.99
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here features McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – plus the very important addition of Eric Dolphy on the leadoff tune "Spiritual" – a number that features Dolphy on bass clarinet alongside Coltrane's tremendous tenor, as both players open up on extended solos that take the tune to nearly 14 minutes in length! Other numbers omit Dolphy, but are still totally great – and Coltrane picks up the soprano sax for a classic reading of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the group shifts slightly for the freer "Chasin The Trane", a 16 minute romp done with only tenor sax, drums, and bass – the latter of which is handled here by Jimmy Garrison instead of Workman. John ColtraneLive At The Village Vanguard Again! ... LP
Impulse, 1966. Sealed Gatefold ... $29.99
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! The album's a great counterpart to the first Vanguard session – as it takes all of the bold, soaring energy of that date, and balances it with the newly introspective sound of the later Coltrane years – plus some of the freedoms learned from the Love Supreme era. The group here showcases the new territory explored by Coltrane – with Trane himself on tenor, soprano, and a bit of bass clarinet (echoing earlier Dolphy), plus Pharoah Sanders on additional tenor, Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rasheid Ali on drums. The album only features 2 long tracks – an incredibly soulful version of "Naima", and a very firey version of "My Favorite Things", but one that begins with a haunting bass solo by Garrison! Liberty/Scamp, 1959. Used ... $5.99
2 exotica classics on one CD! Quiet Village is an undisputed classic in the exotica field, and the record that yielded Denny his biggest hit – the title reworking of "Quiet Village", written by Les Baxter a few years earlier. The rest of the record's pretty darn nice, too – with Denny's trademark piano/percussion style firmly in place – and we can't think of a better way to start off a collection of exotic 50s tunes. Titles include "Sake Rock", "Martinique", "Tune From Rangoon", and "Pagan Love Song". Enchanted Sea is another great classic by Denny – with a nice approach that has sort of a drifting South Seas feel! The record is one of his last good ones for Liberty, and has lots of nice tracks like "My Isle Of Golden Dreams", "Beyond The Reef", "Flotsam & Jetsam", and "Cross Current". Nice sexy cover, too! CD

One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. Pulled from the afternoon and evening sessions caught live at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961 – and titles include longish takes on "Solar", "Jade Visions", and "Gloria's Step". CD

Dizzy GillespieLive At The Village Vanguard (aka Jazz For A Sunday Afternoon) ... LP
Solid State, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
An amazing jam session set – of the sort that was rarely issued in the 60s, and hardly ever on labels like Solid State Records! The album features a small group of all-star players recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1967 – all blowing on long, unstructured tunes that offer amazing solo space, and the kind of spontaneity that's rarely captured so well in a live jazz setting. Players include Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Chick Corea on piano, Ray Nance on violin, Richard Davis on bass, and either Elvin Jones or Mel Lewis on bass – and the unusual mix of players really comes together beautifully for the record, in a rare spirit that recalls the best of the Norman Granz JATP sessions, but with a hipper sort of 60s feel. 3 numbers in all: "Dizzy's Blues", "Blues For Max", and "Tour De Force" – all presented in very long versions. Great Jazz TrioGreat Jazz Trio At The Village Vanguard (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1977. Used ... $24.99
A wonderful live set from the legendary Great Jazz Trio of Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and Hank Jones – one of the group's key Japanese albums of the 70s! As the title implies, the set was recorded live at the Village Vanguard – in a setting that has the trio stretching out even more than on their already-spacious studio sides of the time. Williams is especially nice on the record – light and free on the kit, and miles away from some of his fusion work of the 70s. Jones' tones are warm and soulful, and Carter's bass work is always a treat in a setting like this. The album features a great take on "Naima", plus the tracks "Moose The Mooche", "Favors", and "12+12" – all done in nice long versions. CD

One of the most open-ended sessions ever recorded by the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Hones, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – a live set from the Village Vanguard, and one that features them really stretching out on 4 longer tracks! Jones' work on piano is an especially nice treat here – as he's still got the poise that we know from his more restrained studio sessions, yet also seems to really loosen up with the warm rhythm accompaniment of Carter and Williams. Columbia, 1985. Near Mint- ... $14.99
An early world music/jazz collaboration production from Bill Laswell, a format he'd return to again and again in later years. For the most part, the tunes seem to be excursions on Musa Suso's native Gambian rhythms, plucked out as gentle arpeggios on the Kora, with Herbie's subtle keys and synths complementing nicely. Our favorite though is the Hancock somposition "Early Warning", a spacious keyboard piece with delicate accompaniment by Musa Suso. The sound is hard and heavy on most numbers – with loads of funky 45-styled riffs – and the core group is a nicely self-contained unit, with a lot of focus on the rhythm section – but they also get some great help here from the Memphis Horns, who blow over the top beautifully, and add a nicely soulful vibe to the record! Drums are nice and hard – and titles include the killer "The Dryer (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Razorback Circus", "Robot", "Midnight At Riley's", "Don't Tell Me Nothing About My Woman", "Patch It Up", and "I'll Be Your Doctor Man". Resonance, 1966. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 69.99
The birth of a legend – documented here in a really wonderful package – a brilliant 2CD set that brings forth the first-ever recordings of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – heard here on the debut nights of their very long run of Monday night performances at the Village Vanguard! Right from the start, this group was really something special – formed by the meeting of two legendary talents, trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis – and driven strongly by a lineup of all-star players who were happy to shelve their egos this night of the week, and come together in a unit that was far more than just the sum of its amazing parts. Players on these two nights include Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, Jimmy Owens and Bill Berry on trumpets, Bob Brookmeyer and Garnett Brown on trombones, and Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Pepper Adams, and Jerry Dodgion on a flurry of amazing reed performances – producing the kinds of insane colors and edges the group was always known for! This isn't big band jazz – at least not the sort you'd think of with cliche – and instead, the recordings document the meeting of amazing talents creating effortlessly together under the leadership of two generous giants. The package is wonderful, really a tribute to this amazing music – oversized, and with a huge booklet of notes and photos – and 2CDs with titles that include "Back Bone", "Big Dipper", "Mornin Reverend", "Little Pixie", "All My Yesterdays", "Once Around", "Ah That's Freedom", and "Don't Ever Leave Me". Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... $14.99
A funky vibes classic – and a landmark set from Detroit vibist Johnny Lytle! The set's one of the purest examples of Johnny's great early groove – a tightly stepping version of soul jazz that played big in the clubs at the time, and which has forever made Lytle one of the favorites of the mod jazz dance circuit! Lytle mixes his own heavy work on vibes with some great work from his regular trio members Milt Harris on organ and William "Peppy" Hinnant on drums – augmented here by some additional bass from Bob Cranshaw and percussion from Willie Rodriguez. The sound is strong and tight – arguably even more classic than that of Lytle's Tuba recordings – and the title cut "Village Caller" is a wonderfully angular groover that still gets heavy play in Chicago to this day! Other tracks include the modal dancer "Kevin Devin", plus the tracks "Pedro Strodder", "Green Dolphin Street", "Solitude", and "Unhappy Happy Soul". CD

The speed of the set is by no means a detriment to Mance's soulful playing – and if anything, the record stands as one of his most compelling from the period – not just a batch of soul jazz styles that were soon becoming cliches, but a vibrant example of the full range of Mance's talents, caught in a very spontaneous setting. An overlooked gem from Pharoah Sanders' years on Impulse – one that has him breaking the pattern a bit, but in a really great way! The session mixes up more shorter songs than before – still all quite spiritual, but also a bit more focused – in a way that packs an incredible punch, even at more contemplative moments. Players include Sanders regulars – like Norman Connors on drums and Cecil McBee on bass – but also some key newcomers, like Art Webb on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, and Jimmy Hopps on drums – making one of his excellent Impulse appearances for the record. But perhaps even more striking are the vocals on the set – done often by Sedatrius Brown, who sings partially in a Leon Thomas spiritual mode – but also hits notes that are a bit earthier, and which are picked up in added vocalizations by members of the group. Sanders himself plays soprano and tenor sax – and titles include the expanded "Village Of The Pharoahs" suite, plus "Went Like It Came", "Memories Of Lee Morgan", "Myth", and "Mansion Worlds". Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the long version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. The debut of a legend – and a record that must have actually had some political and cultural punch at the time – especially as the group had yet to go onto super-stardom, and were here stepping out with a butch camp, all-gay style that still had some power in the immediate post-Stonewall years. The approach here is similar to their later hits, but also nicely grounded in the standard disco mode of the time – thanks to some vocal arrangements from Phil Hurtt, and soulful string and horn backings from Horace Ott. Tracks are long, and as gay as you'd expect – but it's also not like the group's making fun of themselves as much yet either. Really wonderful work from a perfectly-matched trio – an all-star lineup, even though pianist Geri Allen was just at the start of her career – and a group who'd already given the world a few different studio albums on other labels! The set follows up with more material from the group's sessions for DIW at the Village Vanguard – and trust us, the material here is every bit as great as the work that was first issued decades back – a perfect balance between the lyrical flights of Geri Allen on the piano, the warmly round basslines of Charlie Haden, and the measured drum work of Paul Motian – a set that's free of ego, and which really has all three players working in wonderfully sympathetic company. CD

✨✧ Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Elvin Jones, & OthersJazz For A Sunday Afternoon Vol 4 – Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Solid State, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent stuff – and quite possibly our favorite entry in this criminally overlooked series on Solid State! The format is simple: take some great players, and have them work out in a relaxed afternoon jam session, playing long album-side tracks that show them playing in a pop-free manner that was quite radical for 60s jazz recordings (especially in comparison to the rest of the material on Solid State!) This set has an incredible group – a sextet with Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Marvin Stamm, Elvin Jones, Richard Davis, and Garnett Brown – all working together perfectly in a blend of Corea's Tones Joans Bones style, and the sharper grooves that Jones was forging in his trio with Joe Farrell. Side one features a Farrell original – "13 Avenue B" – and side two has a great reading of "Stella By Starlight" which runs for 18 minutes. LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, 1961. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Magical trio recordings from the classic trio that featured Bill Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – a massive 3CD set of music, and one that brings together the complete June 1961 Village Vanguard recordings! The revolutionary bass work of LaFaro, and free-thinking rhythms of Motian really helped open up Evans' work on piano at the time – and their influence is heard to best effect on this spontaneous live set, spread out over the course of 22 tunes, recorded throughout the afternoon and evening on June 25, 1961. The package features one newly-discovered take, plus a number of alternates, spoken bits from Bill, and even a few final bars of music. Titles include "Solar", "Milestones", "All Of You", "Gloria's Step", "My Man's Gone Now", "Detour Ahead", "My Romance", and "Waltz For Debby".

Long, lean, and later work by Coleman Hawkins – recorded in a beautifully stripped-down and free setting at the Village Gate! The tracks are all pushing the 10 minute mark – and feature Hawk soloing in that open, exploratory way he was using during the time – a mix of older traditions and slight moments of modernism – carried off with gentle accompaniment from a trio led by Tommy Flanagan on piano. The tenor dominates – and dominates beautifully – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "Mack The Knife", and "Talk Of The Town". LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Carter and Al Foster provide a crisp but elastic foundation for Henderson's burnished melodies and solos in a very spacious setting. One of the greatest albums from The Kinks – the kind of material that pulled them strongly past their bluesy, garagey roots – into a role that has them giving some of the clearest, keenest visions of 20th Century British society – with all of its joys and worries! The tunes here are wonderful – well-penned little odes to the common man and fading scenes and styles of the UK – presented together as a sublime portrait of a late 60s England that hardly any other group would try to touch – all with wit and wisdom from the great Ray Davies, and loads of tuneful work from the rest of the band. Slum Village's legendary Jay Dee-produced Fantastic Vols I & II, with instrumentals, bonus songs, in a nicely-priced 4CD set! Vol I was at one time one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with some of the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up – and is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come. Vol II, on the other hand, is of the most influential hip hop albums of the 2000s – with lots of straight soul, deep funk, and mellowed out jazzy touches in the production that became a staple in underground soul and hip hop, influencing everyone from ?uestlove and the Roots, to D'Angelo and other neo soul heroes and heroines. ✨✧ Albert AylerLive In Greenwich Village To Love Cry – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Late 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two classic Albert Ayler albums – back to back on a single CD! First up is Live In Greenwich Village – one of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Titles are long, with the searing emotional sound that Ayler was peaking at during this time – and titles include "For John Coltrane", "Change Has Come", and "Truth is Marching On". Next is Love Cry – brilliant late work from spiritual saxophone genius Albert Ayler – one of his last truly great albums! The session has none of the jazz-meets-other music feel of some of the other Impulse albums – and is more in the straight expressive style of the ESP recordings. Tracks are more reined in here – with some short themes that are almost a distillation of the freedom Ayler had been expressing for a few years, summed up beautifully in tunes that have a plaintive cry, filled with as much soul and love as Ayler could muster into his horn! Players include Donald Ayler on trumpet, Cal Cobbs on harpsichord, Alan Silva on bass, and Milford Graves on drums – and titles include "Zion Hill", "Love Flower", "Love Cry", "Ghosts", "Omega", and "Dancing Flowers". Impulse/MCA, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first albums in a long line of successes from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – recorded live in their home turf at the Village Vanguard! The group at this point was a freshly-created outfit filled with some of the best large group jazz soloists of the time – players that included Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels, Pepper Adams, Richard Williams, and Bob Brookmeyer – not to mention Jones and Lewis themselves! The style here is very much in the mode that the Clarke Boland Band was crafting in Europe during the same period – a redefinition of the larger jazz group, in a way that allowed it to swing with the dynamic energy and soul of some of the smaller combos of the 60s. And while the Jones/Lewis group had many years over which to hone their craft, they've never sounded better than on these initial recordings – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Samba Con Getchu", "A That's Freedom", "Bachafillen", and "Little Pixie". A really great showcase for the budding talents of Joe Lovano – heard here at a crucial point in his rise to glory on Blue Note! Joe had already been blowing greatness on tenor for years before this set, but these Village Vanguard recordings put Lovano in the same heady space as Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard on Blue Note – by really allowing a great sense of open, spontaneous expression that stands as a nice counterpoint to his well-conceived studio work – a very earnest demonstration of Lovano's rich talents as a saxophonist. Joe plays soprano and C melody sax as well – and the group features always-great work on trumpet and flugelhorn from Tom Harrell, plus Anthony Cox on bass and Billy Hart on drums. One of the funkiest albums ever on Blue Note – a set that mixes the trumpet talents of Blue Mitchell with some killer backings from Monk Higgins – all in a groove that more gritty edges than the best funky soundtracks of the time! Higgins keeps the backings full, but always quite lean – fusing all elements together into a sharp, tight rhythm that steps along with some of the slight African touches you might guess from the title – a groove that's not really that authentic, but which resonates with some of the best inspirations that Hugh Masekela was bringing to American music at the time. And while the album might be an attempt to cash in on Masekela's groove, the feel here is really quite different overall – as tracks are nicely stretched out, with plenty of room for jazzy solo work – and a groove that's much harder overall, thanks to Higgins! Blue Note (UK), 1957. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete recordings of sessions that led to one of the greatest Sonny Rollins records ever – and a genre-defining record that really introduced the world to the concept of a tenor saxophone trio! Rollins is incredible here – really at his best and most adventurous, and almost light years ahead of his work from just a few short years before – working just with the drums of Elvin Jones and bass of Wilbur Ware for accompaniment – as he spins out these long solos that are full of all sorts of sharp modern edges! The lack of piano really makes for something different and fresh in the music – and with this record, Rollins created a format that so many others would take up in years to come. Note that the record also features a small bit of work with Donald Bailey on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – an equally great rhythm duo! This package features all the material recorded for the Village Vanguard album, plus lots more unissued at the time – titles that include "Night In Tunisia", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Old Devil Moon", "Striver's Row", "Get Happy", "Four", "Woody N You", "All The Things You Are", "I Can't Get Started", and "I've Got You Under My Skin" – some in more than one version!
