Joe Farrell & Louis Hayes QuartetVim & Vigor ... CD
Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... About December 20, 2020
An album with a terrible cover – but a wonderful sound! Underneath this ridiculous bikini-clad cover lies some of the best work that Louis Hayes and Joe Farrell cut during the 80s – a freewheeling and open session that's steep on soul, and filled with the best energy both players could muster! The group's a quartet, with Farrell on tenor, soprano, and flute, Hayes on drums, Rob Van Den Broeck on piano, and Harry Emmery on bass. Farrell's inventiveness, as always, is incredible – restrained from some of his over-the-top work in the 70s – but in a good way, one that has him really focusing on the construction of his solos, and coming up with some wonderfully soulful notes that hold the lively rhythms of the tunes together. All tracks are long, and titles include "Miles Mode", "Vim N Vigor", "Arab Arab", and "Besame Mucho". CD

✨✧ Rhythm MakersMonterey/Soul On Your Side ... 7-inch
Vigor/Dynamite Cuts (UK), 1976. New Copy (pic cover)... $15.99
Two fantastic cuts from this legendary funky group – back to back on a limited 45! "Monterey" has this great bassline right at the start – wonderfully fast, and very groovy – then even more complex-yet-funky as the tune rolls on! "Soul On Your Side" is the group's calling card – another tune with really fantastic bass – and all these jazzy changes, chromatic guitar, and other elements that really set the track apart from mainstream 70s funk! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Street PeoplePut Your Hand In The Hand - Power To The People ... LP
Pickwick, Early 70s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Not to be confused with the Street People funk group who had one album out on Vigor, these guys are more of a rock/soul outfit – one who probably only existed in the studio for this one-off Pickwick project! The set compiles "spiritual" soul and rock tunes from the late 60s and early 70s – performed with a style that's a bit John & Yoko, a bit Edwin Hawkins, and occasionally funky at times. There's a nice instrumental called "Booty Butt" that gets a bit funky – and the album's version of "Put Your Hand In The Hand" starts with the same drumbreak as on the original Ocean recording, but a bit faster than that one. Other tracks include "Power to The People", "Hot Love", and "Love Her Madly". LP, Vinyl record album

CreationPower Surge (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Creation/Demon (UK), 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A great late moment from The Creation – a set that was issued in the mid 90s, on the Creation Records label that took its name and inspiration from the group – and which features the original 1966 lineup of the band! The production style has maybe a bit of that later UK psych moodiness, but in a way that really helps reinvigorate the group's sound – not too commercial, but also not an easy retro rehash either – as the group sound surprisingly strong on titles that include "City Life", "Power Surge", "Someone's Gonna Bleed", "Creation", "Shock Horror", "Free Men Live Forever", "Ghost Division", and "English Language". ✨✧ D'AngeloBlack Messiah ... LP
RCA, 2014. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... $24.99
D'Angelo comes back after many years awol from the studio – and the result is a stunning new step in his music! We've loved the man from day one – and some folks could well say that he really helped reinvigorate soul back in the 90s – and all his time away from the studio has definitely been formative, as he comes back here with a righteous power that really blows away all his previous work! D'Angelo still loves the slow beat and mellow approach to funk – but he's also picked up a lot more fuzz and freak, too – righteous energy that more than lives up to the Black Messiah promised by the title, as do the lyrics. Instrumentation includes work by Questlove on drums, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, and Jesse Johnson on guitar – and the grooves have these tripping, slow-percolating elements that really give the lyrics a great sort of crackle. More than worth the wait – as you'll hear on titles that include "Back To The Future (parts 1 & 2)", "Sugah Daddy", "Really Love", "1000 Deaths", "Ain't That Easy", "Betray My Heart", "The Door", and "Till It's Done (Tutu)". ✨✧ Clancy Eccles/The DynamitesFreedom/Fire Corner (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of gems from the early years of reggae – stacked back to back in a 2CD set, along with a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the legendary Freedom album from Clancy Eccles – one of the first great talents to emerge in the Jamaican scene of the 60s – a singer whose recorded history even predates rocksteady and ska, and who had an undeniable impact on the early sound of reggae! Eccles is a genius – a singer/songwriter with a strong sense of soul, and an approach that really opened up the way for a new level of humanity in Jamaican music – as you'll hear on titles that include "Two Of A Kind", "Mount Zion", "Fattie Fattie", "What Will Your Mother Say", "Freedom", "I Need You", "The World Needs Loving", and "Dollar Train". The Dynamites were Clancy Eccles backing band at the same time as the Freedom album – and they step out here in an album of their own – one produced by Clancy himself, but issued even before they backed him up on Freedom! The set features numbers by the group, some organ tunes by Winston Wright, and two vocal appearances by King Stitt – on titles that include "John Public", "Eternally", "Sam Fie", "This Is The Night", "One Way Street", "Vigorton 2", "Fire Corner", "Soul Language", and "Say What You Say". Plus, this 2CD set has a huge amount of bonus tracks – 13 more numbers by Eccles – plus another 13 by The Dynamites, King Stitt, Val Bennett, and Winston Wright. A huge amount of music, all packaged with the usual deep notes and high quality that makes the Doctor Bird label one of the greatest reissue labels for Jamaican music! CD

Marquis HillWay We Play ... CD
Concord, 2016. Used ... $6.99
Perhaps the best to date from trumpeter Marquis Hill – still a young player, but he plays with a depth of Chicago soul jazz history in his musical DNA, even as he brings in profoundly modern touches! Marquis was splitting his time between Chicago and NYC by the time The Way We Play was recorded, but he's really showing a deep love for Chicago here, from the cover art to the choice of material, in which he's invigorating classic numbers with fresh, youthful urgency. Core players include Makaya McCraven on drums, Christian McBride on alto, Justin "Justefan" Thomas on vibes and Joshua Ramos on bass – with guest vocalists Christie Dashiell and Meagan McNeal, poet Harold Green III, percussionist Jan Pastor and trombonist Vincent Gardner. Includes "The Way We Play/Minority", "Moon Rays", "Polka Dots And Moonbeams", a truly fresh, slowed down and moodier take on the Herbie Hancock classic "Maiden Voyage" with some emotive wordless vocals, "Fly Little Bird Fly", "Beep Durple", "Straight, No Chaser", "My Foolish Heart" and "Smile". Wanda JacksonParty Ain't Over ... LP
Third Man/Nonesuch, 2011. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Raucous late material from Wanda Jackson – one of the greatest voices of late 50s rock & roll, male or female – sounding freshly invigorated well into her 70s! The album is produced by Jack White and staffed by his Third Man Records players, with no one involved here sounding all too keen on simply reigniting 50s rockabilly. There's a lot of punchy brass in the arrangements, with swaggery electric guitars and interesting song choices – with covers of contemporary Dylan and Amy Winehouse numbers, plus other covers that range from dusty and thoughtful, to playful, to flat out ferocious. Wanda's voice has held up way better than many of her 50s peers (again, male or female) and this is a worthy entry in her legendary career. Includes "Shakin' All Over", "Thunder On The Mountain", "You Know I'm No Good", "Nervous Breakdown", "Blue Yodel #6", "Dust On The Bible" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Dionne WarwickI'll Never Fall In Love Again ... LP
Scepter, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $3.99
Wonderfully mature work from Dionne Warwick – one of her last few albums for the Scepter label, with a sense of maturity, poise, and grace that tops even Dionne's earliest classics for the label. She's still working heavily here with Burt Bacharach – who produced and arranged most of the songs – with some help from Hal David and Larry Wilcox. And in some way, it's almost like Bacharach's reinvigorated here – moving into a deeper mode that's quite similar to some of the more complicated tunes on his A&M recordings from the same period – almost unafraid of charting or not, and working instead in a completely adult mode that's beautifully constructed through webs of sound and sadness, loss and longing. Titles include "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "My Way", "Knowing When To Leave", "Let Me Go To Him", and "Didn't We". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousRevolution! – Teen Time In Corpus Christi 1965 to 1970 ... CD
Cicadelic, Late 60s. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
Rare mid 60s rock from Corpus Christi, TX – from Brit Invasion styled sounds to nascent garage and psychedelia from a slew of great groups from what was clearly a healthy scene – one of the best rock comps yet from Cicadelic! The musicianship is incredible here – even though many of the players are likely still in their teens – with tight harmonies and skillful guitar, drums and bass playing. That said, it's raw and invigorating – even the tunes with early Beatles style harmonies have a raucous edge. 28 tracks in all: "It's So Hard (Previously Unreleased)", "Don't Give Up Hope" and more by Four More, "All Night Long", "A Taste Of The Same" and more by The Bad Seeds, "Passage To India (Previously Unreleased Mix)" by The Zakary Thaks, "Recognition", "Eveline Kaye" and more by The Liberty Bell, "Bad Side Of The Moon" and "Revolution" by Kubla Kahn, "I've Got Something On My Mind" by The Buckle and much more. ✨✧ Charles LloydVoice In The Night ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1999. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key album from the later Charles Lloyd years on ECM – from a moment when the saxophonist seemed to be completely reinvigorated, and exploring very different territories than his music of the 60s! Part of the sound has Lloyd hitting a few ECM vibes – hard not to do with a group that features John Abercrombie on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but there's also moments that are looser and freer, too – really showing the individuality that's always been such a hallmark of Charles' recordings, and which here is hardly going to cowtow to any sort of stricter style for the label. The tenor work is superb – very sinuous and constantly exploring, but never overindulgent – and titles include "Voice In The Night", "Dorotea's Studio", "Homage", "Pocket Full Of Blues", "Forest Flower Sunrise/Sunset", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing". Vampi Soul (Spain), 1950s/1960s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of 50s and 60s music from Puerto Rico – and a killer compilation centered around the pioneering work of percussionist Rafael Cortijo and singer Ismael Rivera! Essentially, this a blueprint for the global salsa, tropical and Latin scenes to come – and it's invigorating, tightly grooving and wonderful stuff all the way! Wall-to-wall Afro and West Indian-indebted percussion and rhythms, with tight horns and incredible vocals. It's filled pioneering work, but this is hardly a history listen – it's a fun set, and a sprawling one at that! Includes "Cortaron a Elena" by Cortijo (as Canario & Su Grupo con Raful), "En Orbita" by Baltazar Carrero, "Habla Cuembre" by Los Caballeros Del Ritmo, "El Plenero" by Mon Rivera Y Su Orquesta, "Dejalo Que Suba" by by Cortijo (as Canario & Su Grupo con Raful), "Belinda" by Chivirico, "Cucala" by Cortijo Y Su Combo con Ismael Rivera, "Ron Con Coco" by Mon Rivera Y Su Orquesta and more. 30 tracks on 2CDs.
