VenturesHorse ... LP
Liberty, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of the best late 60s albums by the Ventures – a lot more hard-wailing than usual – and done with a fair bit of influence from funk and soul music too! The title cut gives the album away nicely – as it's a cover of Cliff Nobles' classic funky 45 "The Horse", done with more guitars than the horns of the original – and with a funky edge that's a lot sharper than any of The Ventures' other work! Other tracks follow suit by borrowing lots from the harder side of 60s soul – thanks to arrangements from George Tipton and Warren Barker – both of whom sound even groover here than usual. Other sweet tracks include versions of "Licking Stick Licking Stick", "Here Comes The Judge", "Choo Choo Train", and "Grazing In The Grass" – as well as the tasty originals "Soul Breeze" and "Horse Power". Great stuff – really! LP, Vinyl record album

Dolton/Crescendo, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Ventures were one of the great, mostly instrumental rock combos that paved the way for the surf rock trend to follow – so when it was time to craft an actual surf rock LP, you should well know that they were gonna make a great one! In many cases, groups with the chops of The Ventures would sound overly-mannered when cutting a surf record, but not The Ventures! They play with the energy and youthful abandon necessary to set the tone. Speaking of tone, the overall sound is as fantastic as usual here. Killer! Includes "Pipeline", "Diamonds", "Windy And Warm", "Ten Over", "Changing Tides", "Barefoot Venture", "Cruncher", "The Lonely Sea" and more. CD

✨✧ VenturesUnderground Fire ... LP
Liberty, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Ventures pull a bit of fire from the late 60s underground – using influences from garage and psych to really trip out the usual sound of their guitars! Things are still relatively straight ahead, but there's more fuzz than before – and the choice of cool tunes really keeps things in territory that's pretty darn hip! Some of the best cuts are originals by the group – surprisingly jamming, and surprisingly creative – done in collaboration with arrangements from Mike Melvoin that really make all the instruments sparkle wonderfully! Drums can be hard, keyboards can be groovy, and the overall vibe of the record is a real surprise if you only know The Ventures' hits. Titles include "Embers In E Minor", "Higher Than Thou", "Up Up & Down", "Sea Of Grass", "Down On Me", and "Country Funk & The Canned Head". LP, Vinyl record album

Liberty, Late 60s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
If anybody could take a great tune and make it better, it was The Ventures – as you'll hear on this album's killer version of "Hawaii Five O" – as well as a host of other groovy goodies too! The set's still got the core sound of the quartet – loads of fuzzy guitars riffing away over heavy drums – but there's also some fuller arrangements too, but handled by groovy guys Mike Melvoin and George Tipton – both of whom keep things swinging in a west coast 60s style that's very much like the best modes over at Capitol Records! In addition to "Hawaii Five O", other titles include "The Letter", "Don't Give In To Him", "A Summer Place", "Lovin Things", "Stormy", and "I Can Hear Music". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Carlos Patato ValdezAuthority ... CD
Latin Percussion Ventures, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunner of an album – and a really unique Latin percussion jam from the 70s! The session's headed by the legendary Carlos Patato Valdez – who arguably sounds better here than on any of his earlier albums – as he's working with a really fluid, open groove – achieved in the unique setting for the album created by producer Martin Cohen! There's a really traditional feel to some of the tunes – as the music really reaches back to older Afro-Cuban modes – but the sound is also quite 70s too, thanks to occasional warm jazzy touches, and crystal-clear production that still keeps everything nice and crisp. Patato plays quintet and sings – and other players include Steve Berrios on cascara, Nelson Gonzalez on tres and congas, Mario Papaito Munoz on congas, and Virgilo Marti on tumbadora. Many tunes are nice and long – really letting the musicians stretch out and jam, but in a relaxed way that's totally different than older descarga modes. Titles include "LP Theme", "LP Inspiration", "Chevere", and "Alma Mia". CD

✨✧ Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (180 gram deluxe 40th anniversary edition) ... LP
Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) ✨✧ Robert CobertDark Shadows – Original TV Soundtrack ... LP
Philips, 1969. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful wonderful soundtrack – recorded to accompany the strange horror/soap opera show Dark Shadows! The music is really weird – moogy at times, groovy at others – with lots of cool late 60s touches like fuzzy guitar, electric piano, and floating string and woodwind passages that have a really dark edge. Many of the tracks feature narration by stars Jonathan Frid and David Selby – creating a spooky sort of ghost story feel. And some of the even better tunes are instrumentals, with surprisingly groovy guitar in the front – creating an almost Ventures-like horror sound! Titles include "No 1 At The Blue Whale", "When I Am Dead", "Meditations", "I'll Be With You Always", "Josette's Theme", "Dark Shadows 2 Collinwood", "Shadows Of Night", "Seance", and "I Barnabas". Sundazed, 1960s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Freaky fuzzed out madness – and a much-needed look at the work of Davie Allan & The Arrows – kings of the 60s biker soundtrack! Davie first started out with sort of a Ventures-esque approach – jamming fast and hard in a surf-inspired guitar instrumental mode – but as his career went on, he really fuzzed things up a lot, and started going for a trippier groove that was perfect for the cheapo exploitation films coming out of the AIP studios at the time. Allan's work appeared in films like The Wild Angels, Devil's Angels, Mondo Hollywood, Born Losers, The Glory Stompers, and The Hellcats – and this sweet little set brings together some of the best of those tunes, along with a really full set of notes that finally tells the story behind this mysterious group! All tracks are instrumentals, with lots of heavy bass and percussion – and titles include "King Fuzz", "Devil's Rumble", "Another Cycle In Detroit", "Glory Stompers", "Cycle Delic", "Blue Rides Again", "Invasion", "Shape Of Things To Come", "Hellcats", "Born Loser's Theme", and "Moonfire". The title track's a mighty big hit for The Marketts – and it's also a great way to describe the group's talent for pushing past their boundaries at the time! The sound is surf instrumental at the core – but really stretches out to space themes, soundtrack areas, and more – thanks to inventive arrangements from Ray Pohlman, who pushes these guys farther than the usual groups of the time – while still keeping that guitar instrumental style that made them so great overall! There's a lot more variety to the tunes than you'd hear on a Ventures album, for example – and beautiful Bones Howe engineering makes sure that the sound is top-shelf throughout! A really fantastic record, and one that's very different than you might expect from a record with "improvised" in the title! There's certainly improvisation on the record, but in a standard jazz way – the set's not free jazz, but a wonderful batch of modern jazz ideas, with a crackle that reminds us of the hippest UK sets of the mid 60s, some of the groundbreaking Chicago work of the late 50s, and maybe even the way that Charles Mingus could allow free play within a group that was also moving forward strongly together! The lineup features Knimes on drums, Jose Cervera on alto and flute, Yiannis Marinos on trombone, and Ignacio Santoro on bass – a piano-less quartet that does a fantastic job with the leader's original compositions. Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 39.99
The end of the 80s saw a huge new shift in music on the UK scene – a moment when indie rock and club music collided – and guitar-based work was back on the dancefloors in a really big way! Part of the shift came from years of UK interest in house, electro, and other American styles – which were often spun alongside post-punk and indie material in the same clubs (maybe most famously at the Hacienda in Manchester) – leading to a surprising blend of styles that breathed a lot of new life into the world of rock music as well! This set captures cuts from the key years of this moment – the post-1988 summer of love period through years when dance might take over more completely – a much-loved moment, filled with well-remembered cuts – presented here in a big box set that features many rare mixes from 12" singles as well. The box brings together 57 tracks in all, all with detailed notes on the music – and includes work from Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, 808 State, Inspiral Carpets, Future Sound Of London, Electronic, Candy Flip, Telescopes, Hollow Men, Spacemen 3, Spin, World Of Twist, Mock Turtles, Northside, The Moonflowers, Charlatans, Shamen, Blow Up, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, The Dylans, Saint Etienne, and others! A fantastic look at a really groundbreaking moment in British music – a time when modern jazz, progressive rock, and psychedelic music were all being jumbled up and shaken up – with results that were completely unique to the scene, and still really sound tremendous all these many years later! The music here is very different than sounds going on in the US at the time – some occasional avant touches, but more in a mode that reflects the cultural diversity of the UK scene – both in terms of the varied national backgrounds of some of the artists, and their differing roles in society – played out here in a rich array of musical settings, instrumental modes, and the occasional vocal tune too! There's definitely a few artists here that you might expect – like Nucleus, Michael Gibbs, Don Rendell/Ian Carr, Mike Westbrook, and Tubby Hayes – but they're set up here next to others who include Davy Graham, Pentangle, Harold McNair, Affinity, Keef Harley, Manfred Mann Chapter Three, Wynder K Frog, Spooky Tooth, and Mike Taylor – in a huge lineup that also features all sorts of unusual projects and collaborations. Other artists include Johnny Almond Music Machine, Satisfaction, Julie Driscoll, If, Chris Spedding, Mike Osborne, John McLaughlin, Joe Harriott, and New Jazz Orchestra – and the 48 track set comes in a box with a big set of notes on the genius within! ✨✧ Captain SkyAdventures Of Captain Sky ... LP
AVI, 1978. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary funk set from late 70s Chicago – served up by our own Captain Sky, aka Daryl Cameron – an imposing figure who often worked in the same space-themed territory as the P-Funk empire in the mid 70s! The difference here, though, is that Cameron wrote, produced, and put the whole thing together himself – with help from a few friends in the studio – making the album a great homegrown attempt to rival the strength of the bigger funk ensembles of the period – something The Captain and crew do pretty darn well throughout! There's lots of heavy bass on the set – a strong precursor of modes to come – mixed with riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and plenty of tight rhythms – on cuts that include the famous sample cut "Super Sporm" – a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound – plus "Now That I Have You", "Saturday Night Move-Ease", "Wonder Worm" and "Can't Stop Now". There's a vampire with a flute on the cover – and that image alone is more than enough to make us drop the needle on this rare Japanese gem from the 70s! And fortunately, the sound of the music is equally cool – funky fusion with some nicely spacey currents – almost a Mizell Brothers vibe at points, in the way elements can swirl around in the mix, and attain this wonderfully full power without ever sounding too commercial at all! There's definitely some of that flute on the record, but the keyboards are maybe even cooler – as is all the electric instrumentation, which comes together in a sublime way! Titles include "Gokumontou", "Kamen Butokai", "Yasuhakamura", "Kindaichi Kosuke No Theme", "Mitsukubitou", and "Meirosou No Sangeki". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ RyleAdventures Of Jefferson Keyes ... LP
Sed Soul (Germany), 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of boogie – a contemporary set, but one that it feels like it was lifted from the best of the early 80s underground – from the post-disco, funky club rhythms – right through to the soulful vocals and warm keyboards in the mix! The tunes have a sound that's sophisticated, but very organic too – that best sort of funky flow that you'll remember from the moment when the bigger discos were closing their doors, and club music went back underground and got stripped down to its finest elements! Rob Hardt provides the great keyboards on the record – and vocals are by a variety of singers – including Seest, Flemming Fanoe, Kiki Kyte, Folami, Kenny Thomas, and Sulene Fleming – on titles that include "Keep The Faith", "Busy Dreamin", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Lift Your Head Up", "Private Eye", "Soho House", and "Something's Got Me Walking On Air". The tunes are positive and upbeat as their titles might imply – and the record's a great one if you go for an Incognito-styled groove! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DynastyYour Piece Of The Rock/Adventures In The Land Of Music/Second Adventure/Right Back At Cha (3CD set) ... CD
Solar/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Four classic albums from Dynasty – served up here with bonus material too! First up is Your Piece Of The Rock – a set that has Dynasty working with snapping grooves with a nice sort of electro undercurrent –- all the handiwork of Leon Sylvers, who also plays bass and drums on the record – and really helps Dynasty find their groove! The tracks here are all quite long, and offer up plenty of space for the players to jam nicely – a group that includes Fred Jackson on saxophone, Gene Dozier on keyboards, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet. Dynasty are pretty good too – a bit more than just a club trio filling in vocals from time to time – and titles include "Satisfied", "Your Piece Of The Rock", "I Don't Want To Be A Freak", "When You Feel Like Giving Love", and "It's Still A Thrill". Next is Adventures In Music – almost a fusion of older sweet group soul with some of the more bottom-driven modes forged by the Solar label! The keyboards are upfront, the basslines strong, and the group is completely tight on the money – at a level that made them one of the strongest 80s proponents of the Solar Records groove. The title cut here is our favorite – a sweet stepper that bursts out with this blast of sound that's totally great – completely captivating, and filled with cascading sounds that really grab us. Other tracks include "Ice Breaker", "Something To Remember", "Day & Night", "Do Me Right", and "I've Just Begun To Love You". Next is Second Adventure – the kind of set that shows why the group went on to become one of the strongest things going in the second chapter of the Solar Records soul empire from LA! The album begins with a rock-solid punch, then continues strongly throughout – basslines, guitar riffs, and funky drums all right on the money – used in a way that's somehow fresher than most of the larger funk groups of the time – and with a nice balance between mellower moments that still seem to have a gentle kind of groove. The energy is wonderful throughout – and titles include "Give It Up For Love", "Love In The Fast Lane", "Revenge", "Here I Am", "A Man In Love", and "You're My Angel". Last up is Right Back At Cha – a set that's super tight and right on the money – that wonderfully catchy approach to 80s R&B that was the hallmark of Dynasty at their height! The tunes are a hook-heavy blend of funk and upbeat modes – all brightly glowing with that style that made Solar Records one of the leading lights of the Cali soul scene in the decade – and which gets some extra special treatment here from one of their most consistent groups! Titles include "That's The Way I Feel About You", "Check It Out, "The Only One", "Questions", "Straight Out", and "Does That Ring A Bell". 3CD set also features 9 bonus tracks – all 7" single mixes of hits from the albums! Columbia, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the records that arranger Pete Rugolo cut for Columbia in the years after he parted company with Stan Kenton. As most modern jazz ears will know, Rugolo was one of the main reasons for Kenton's uniquely swinging approach in the early 50s – and he also lent his talents to some fantastic records by June Christy, The Four Freshmen, and other hip vocalists of the time. This side has plenty of Rugolo's modern touches – but manages to swing nicely, spending a bit of time with strange assemblages of instruments and odd phrasings, but also getting back to the groove in time to keep things lively. Titles include "Sambamba", "Here's Pete", "Mixin The Blues", "Rugolo Meets Shearing", "Jingle Bells Mambo", "Good Evening Friends Boogie", "Conversation", and "Bazaar". LP, Vinyl record album

Paramount/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
There never was a second volume of work from Robert Savage – but maybe that's because he has enough musical adventures on this set to last him a lifetime! Savage is better known as Bobby Arlin, who started out with The Leaves – and his guitar here is far more searing than his work on the LA scene of the late 60s – certainly informed by the rise of British hard rock at the time, but with a boldness that's all its own! The odd cover is hardly a hint at what's inside – as Bobby works with a lean trio of just bass and drums, and none of the trappings that prog-like image might make you expect – qualities that are underscored with some occasional rootsy inflections, and a nice sort of attitude in the vocals. Titles include "Seven Days Drunk", "Don't Run & Hide", "Beaver Baby", "Milk Run", "Save Us From The Cyclops", and "Road Apples". CD

Kent (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Possibly the greatest installment so far in this wonderfully groovy series – a set of hard-swinging soul jazz tracks from the 60s – most of them the sort you might find blasting out of a jukebox in the backroom of some southside bar! Heavy Hammond, tremendous tenor, and gritty guitar lines abound – all upbeat and groovy, almost funky at times – served up in 2 or 3 minute installments from a batch of rare 45s! There's echoes here of the instrumental grooves that play big on the popcorn soul scene, but other work is more jazz-based overall – and although a few tunes have vocals, the biggest focus here is on instrumental numbers. Wonderful stuff throughout – and a collection we'll be playing for years! Titles include "Bash Dance" by Bobby Donaldson, "Arabian Jerk" by The Merits, "La La La La La" by Afro Blues Quintet, "Take Off Your Shoes (part 1)" by Booker T Averhart & The Mustangs, "Hung Over" by The Martinis, "Senor Blues" by Dee Clarke, "Sweet Bread" by Miles Grayson Trio, "All Around The World" by Chuck Higgins, "COD" by Albert King, "Fredrick's Dream" by Kenny Rice & Leo's Five, and "Tam-A-Rind" by Hank Jacobs & The TKOs. Dust & Grooves, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's been about a decade since the first volume of the Dust & Grooves project from photographer Eilon Paz, and plenty has changed in the world of vinyl – sales have gone up, records circulate the globe even more than before, and there's been a tremendous rebirth of interest in bringing together all sorts of very groovy albums and singles! This huge book is maybe a testament to how strong vinyl is well into the 21st Century – and its bigness is also an indication of now the love of records shows no sign of stopping – as documented in the hundreds of pages devoted to record collectors from around the globe, portrayed in beautiful full color photographs with their musical treasures amidst the space of their larger collections! Somehow, this book seems even bigger than the first volume – and it definitely covers a lot more territory, both geographically and in terms of musical styles – and also adds in a few articles at the end on key music figures and collectors of sound – including Quantic, Dam Funk, Andy Votel, Don Letts, and others. The massive book is 650 pages – very heavy pages at that – full color throughout, oversized, and hardcover. Book

Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Verve, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second great session from two of Verve's biggest jazz stars of the 60s – organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery – an unlikely pair, to be sure, but one who work great together on the set! The real change here is in Wes' playing – as it's shifted from the mellower style used over larger backings on most of his Verve sets, back to the rootsier soul jazz tone of his earliest recordings from his days on the Indianapolis scene. Jimmy and Wes are working with a core combo that includes Grady Tate on drums and Ray Barretto on conga – making for a lean organ/guitar groove that's only got percussion to kick it along. Titles include "Call Me", "OGD", "King Of The Road", "Mellow Mood", and "Maybe September" – plus a great version of "Milestones" that features some hard swinging larger backings from Oliver Nelson! Peter Guralnick has written some mighty big, career-defining books on key figures in music – but from the start, we've always loved his shorter pieces the best – the kind of work we first fell in love with in books like Sweet Soul Music and Lost Highway! And if you dig his shorter pieces, there's plenty of those here – really wonderful essays on artists in a variety of genres – penned by one of the few figures who can balance an understanding of their music with a mixture of historical detail and unabashed fandom! Guralnick's writing has gotten better and better over the years – and it's great to have it focused back on his roots – in chapters that focus on artists who include Solomon Burke, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, Howlin Wolf, Tammy Wynette, and even the great country trucker Dick Curless! Never-issued work from one of our favorite Polish jazz musicians of the 60s – vibist Jerzy Milian, an artist whose modern sounds were almost as much an important part of the scene as the piano of Krzystof Komeda! Here, Milian works in two different small groups – one a quartet with the great Wojciech Karolak on piano, the other a trio, but with occasional contributions from Jan Ptaszy Wroblewski on tenor – both groups here in unreleased material that was originally recorded for radio. Some of the tracks are nice and long, and throughout, Milian's got that sharply chromatic approach that makes his work on vibes so wonderful – a bold, rich attack that's got a great sense of resonance. Definitely some mystical adventures here from Jean-Luc Ponty – one of the few artists on the violin who can make it come up with sounds like this – weird cool and spacey elements that sound great next to the album's use of organ, keyboard, and Fender Rhodes! The album features two long tracks – "Mystical Adventures" and "Final Truth" – both building nicely on straightforward themes which are then extrapolated by the fusiony solos – never too jamming or intense, but moving with a nice sense of progression, too. The album also features two shorter, catchier numbers – a compelling cover of Stevie Wonder's "As", plus "Rhythms Of Hope". CD

Key club cuts from the second generation of the industrial scene – that 80s moment when the music moved from the noisy, experimental territory of the Throbbing Gristle underground to a more mainstream world where the previous sonic breakthroughs were mixed with beats and lyrics to create some surprisingly danceable tracks! Here in Chicago, we had Wax Trax to thank us for introducing us to lots of this music – but on the other side of the Atlantic, some of these groups were getting plenty of play both on radio and in nite spots – using darker beats and basslines to surprisingly great effect. The package is maybe worth it alone for "Yon Yonson" by the Dave Howard Singers – a cut we thought nobody in the world remembered – and the 3CD package features 44 titles in all, with work from Attrition, Meat Beat Manifesto, A:Grumh, Lead Into Gold, Nocturnal Emissions, Test Dept, SPK, Front 242, Renegade Soundwave, Severed Heads, Age Of Chance, Laibach, Neon Judgement, The Weathermen, Section 25, Die Krupps, MAD, Legendary Pink Dots, Son Of Sam, Esplendor Geometrico, Hunting Lodge, Borghesia, Alein Sex Fiend, and others! One of the nicest albums that Ferrante & Teicher cut for United Artists! The record has bits of prepared piano over exotic backings – perhaps not as crazy as some of their albums for Westminster, but still with some good off-beat touches that make the album one of the few that's really worth seeking out by them. BYG/Charly (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 32.99
Really unique material from Sun Ra – a pair of recordings that were initially circulated much more strongly than some of his Saturn Records material, thanks to the power of the BYG/Actuel label in the early 70s – but tracks that actually come from a variety of different sessions that Ra himself did with the Arkestra in the late 60s! Tracks are shortish, but very inventive – a well-chosen snapshot of all the new ideas that the group were cooking up during the end of the 60s in New York, with an increased mission to explore the outer reaches of space, and use more electronics than ever before! Ra plays some killer keyboards – moog, spacemaster, and acoustic piano – often with these really eerie tones – and other players include Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Akh Tal Ebah on space dimension mellophone, Ali Hassan on trombone, Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor, and Pat Patrick on baritone – and the whole group vocalizes at points, joined by other singers who include June Tyson and Art Jenkins. There's also some great use of "strange strings" on the sessions, not to mention a bit of reverb – and tracks on this first volume include "Spectrum", "The Satellites Are Spinning", "Seen III Took 4", "Adventures Of Bugs Hunter", "Legend", and "The Realm Of Lightning". Something Weird/Modern Harmonic, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
A great trip back to the glory days of grindhouse cinema – served up here in a host of trailers and music from films of the legendary David F Friedman! Friedman was one of the kings of exploitation of the time – and worked heavily in the pre-porn years of raunchy cinema, then dabbled in softcore once the 70s approached – a great range of c-grade films that are all evoked here in a very cool package of trailers for some of David's most notorious movies! The package features both images and music – as it includes a DVD of the trailers along with an audio presentation of the sonic elements – often with very cool music underneath the sleazy spoken bits. Includes trailers for The Pick-Up, The Lustful Turk, The Head Mistress, The Notorious Daughter Of Fanny Hill, Brand Of Shame, Thar She Blows, The Adult Version of Jekyll & Hide, Johnny Firecloud, Bummer, and The Erotic Adventures Of Zorro. ✨✧ VariousJon Savage's 1980 to 1982 – The Art Of Things To Come ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 23.99
A mighty nice collision of sounds – and one that really gets at the special spirit of music on the left side of the scene at the start of the 80s! Sure, punk broke things open in the late 70s – but a few years later, that initial shock gave way to a much more fluid, experimental sort of scene – one in which different sounds and styles could resonate with each other in a really great way – some barriers between rock and soul forever taken down, and the door from the artier side of the spectrum open to bring some fresh ideas into the mainstream! Writer Jon Savage was a very important part of the scene at the time – and here, he recalls the musical moment not just with a great array of tracks that leap between genres, but also with well-penned notes that get at the thought behind the tunes included on the 35 track set. Titles include "Hydraulic Pump (part 2)" by P Funk All Stars, "We're So Cool" by Au Pairs, "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force, "Don't Make Me Wait" by NYC Peech Boys, "Poor Old Soul (part 2)" by Orange Juice, "Sound Of The Crowd" by Human League, "Underground" by The Bizarros, "Twist & Crawl" by The Beat, "These Days" by Joy Division, "The Apartment" by Giorgio Moroder, "She's Lost Control" by Grace Jones, "More Bounce To The Ounce" by Zapp, "Flight" by A Certain Ratio, "Euthenics" by Modern Eon, "Too Many Creeps" by Bush Tetras, "How We Gonna Make The Black Nation Rise" by Brother D with Collective Effort, "Mack The Knife" by Psychedelic Furs, "Pictures" by Josef K, "Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, "Art On 45" by Royal Family & The Poor, and "Our Love" by Donna Summer. VariousTotal Exotica – From Far-Off Islands To Your Bachelor Pad ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A great little package, and way more than just the familiar exotica moments on mainstream compilations – as your guides here are Lux Interior and Poison Ivy of The Cramps – two folks who know more than plenty about the music of the farther reaches of the postwar years! And although their other collections for this label have gone way out to pull in some totally obscure material, the blend here is more measured – so that you'll get great cuts by some of the bigger exotica names, mixed with other numbers that are more unusual – and some that we wouldn't have even thought to include in such a package – all awash in sounds from the islands, tropical percussion, and even a few birdcalls and chants along the way! The 2CD set features a great range of material – and titles include "The Twisters" by Mel Henke, "Hampi" by Yma Sumac, "Mystery Of Love" by Olatunji, "Jardin De La Noche" by Robert Drasnin, "Mood For You" by Phil Moore, "Alegres Conga" by Cal Tlader, Envy" by Bill Russo, "Kele Kele" by Johnny Richards, "African Bossa Nova" by Ahmed Abdul Malik, "Tabu" by Augie Colon, "Pua Carnaeon" by Arthur Lyman, "Adventures In Paradise" by Leo Addeo, "Dance Of The Nustas" by Elisabeth Waldo, "Pagan Love Song" by Alex Stordal, "Balikpapan" by Jimmy Namaro Trio, and "Train To Ranchipur" by Markko Polo Adventurers. ✨✧ Harry BettsJazz Soul Of Doctor Kildare ... CD
Choreo/Solid (Japan), Mid 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Harry Betts leads a great group of west coast all-stars here – maybe not in a way that's got the soul jazz promised in the title, but which makes for some wonderfully groovy music overall! The set's a great example of the way that so many 50s west coast players really opened up their game in the 60s – especially when they got a chance to play in different settings – which is definitely the case here in a record that's got stunning read work from Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, and Herbie Steward – plus trumpet from Conte Candoli and Jack Sheldon, vibes and percussion from Larry Bunker, piano by Russ Freeman, trombone from Frank Rosolino and Milt Bernhart, and even some congas by a young Francisco Aguabella! The charts are large, and the material isn't just from Dr Kildare – as the set features a variety of different film themes – from "The Asphalt Jungle", "Adventures In Paradise", "Bus Stop", "National Velvet", "Klondike", "Hong Kong", and "Cain's Hundred" – all done in jazzy ensemble modes. PRT (UK), 1981. Very Good+ (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Thunderbirds are go! Or at least they were on this incredibly groovy British show from the 60s – one that featured these crazy puppets flying planes and rockets, in groovy spy-type adventures! Apart from the visuals, one of the best features of the show was the music – written by Barry Gray in a pastiche, almost parody, of action styles from mainstream movies – used beautifully to underline the stiff actions of the puppets with driving orchestrations, haunting sound effects, and even some nicely laidback jazzy bits. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(NOTE – vinyl has a light warp, but plays fine. Sleeve has some light wear.)

✨✧ Sun Ra & His Solar-Myth ArkestraSolar-Myth Approach Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
BYG/Charly, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
There's also some great use of "strange strings" on the sessions, not to mention a bit of reverb – and tracks titles include "Spectrum", "The Satellites Are Spinning", "Seen III Took 4", "Adventures Of Bugs Hunter", "Legend", "The Realm Of Lightning", "The Utter Nots", "Outer Spaceways Inc", "Scene 1 Take 1", "Strange Worlds", "Ancient Ethiopia", "Pyramids", and "Interpretation". Nice mid-tempo production by E Swift on these two from the 21 & Over LP. ✨✧ Janet Borgerson & Jonathan SchroederDesigned For Hi-Fi Living – The Vinyl LP In Midcentury America (paperback) ... Book
MIT Press, 2018. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
One of the smartest books we've ever seen on album cover art – a lavish full color volume that not only presents loads of classic images, but also has plenty to say about them as well! The book is a bit smaller than LP format – maybe 8" square overall – but it's filled with loads of full page reproductions of classic hi fi, bachelor pad, and mood music album covers – most with a facing page of test that really examines the images, and also offers up other historical details too! The authors really follow a direction that's inspirational – treating these album covers not as kitsch, but as a rich document of midcentury America at the crossroads – full of deeper meaning if you know how to read things the right way. The book features chapters that include "Let's Have a Dinner Party", "Music For Hi Fi Living", "Cuba", "Airlines", "Adventures In Sound", "Sound Tour", and "Capitol Of The World" – and the hardcover volume is 420 pages, full color, with great notes at the end! Geffen, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second major label set from The Roots, and what many consider their first and definitely not their last) irrefutable classic! We could make the case for the debut Do You Want More? as a bonafide classic, too, but this is certainly the tone certainly the one that cemented their status and one of the greatest live-tested hip hop bands. Given how strong and far reaching The Roots pedigree would become over the years, this one's all the more amazing to revisit – and it's fresh and distinctive to this day. 20 tracks including intro & outro, with "Respond/React", "Clones", "No Alibi", "No Great Pretender" "Universe At War" (featuring Common while he was still Common Sense), "What They Do", "Ital (The Universal Side)", Concerto Of The Desparado", "The Adventures In Wonderland" and more. Columbia, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A very early US release of work by Ravi Shankar – originally part of Columbia's "Adventures In Sound" series, a mixed mood music/world music imprint that offered up some excellent work in its day! The set begins with a compelling "Introduction To Indian Music" – spoken by Ravi himself over the course of a few minutes, with bits of instrumentation used to illustrate his points. Shankar's sitar is in a trio with tabla and tambura – and after that spoken introduction, the record then moves into four longer trance-like tracks – "Dadra", "Maru Bihag", "Bhimpalasi", and "Sindhi Bhairavi". A follow-up to Shorter's successful Footprints Live album – done in the same sort of angular and introspective mode, and also with a group that includes Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blad on drums. The overall style's not as much in the joyous, soulful Shorter mode that we love so much from the earlier years – but the record is a good follow-up to Footprints, and will please if you dig that set. Madlib Invazion, 2010. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Formative Madlib beatcraft – music made by 'Lib from 1990-2000 – crafted into a tight full length album that feels as fresh as ever! History Of The Loop Digga features funky hip hop instrumentals made at a time when he was producing underground beat tapes for himself and the Crate Diggas Palace crew of MCs. Raw Madlib hip hop beats from the early days with spackled with bits of vocals from Madlib & his Quasimoto alter ego, Declaime and others, plus mad vocal samples. At the core, it's excellent leftfield hip hop productions that aptly predicts for the unbridled genius to come, mixed in 2010 and feeling very much of the here and now. 34 shortish tracks on the 2LP version for more than an hour of modern vintage Madlib. Island (UK), 1979. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Still one of THE standout records of the post-punk years – the simple but effective dub statement of three London ladies with decidedly left wing politics! The record's in a format that would later be copped by dozens of groups – one that mixes together post-punk and heavy dub – the former of which is served up with some nice rough guitars and crackly vocals, and the latter which is done even better with some super-solid production by Dennis Bovell! Titles include "Shoplifting", "Spend Spend Spend", "Instant Hit", "Newtown", "Ping Pong Affair", and the seminal "Typical Girls". This 2CD deluxe edition is fully loaded – featuring the original album remastered, unreleased demos, b-sides, outtakes and BBC sessions, plus a 28 page booklet with new interviews. Bonus material includes Peel Sessions for "Vindictive", "So Tough", "New Town" and more, demos for "Instant Hit", "Spend Spend Spend", "Adventures Close To Home" and more, rough mixes of Shoplifting", "Typical Girls" and more. 40 tracks on 2CDs! Deram (Japan), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
The great first album from Ten Years After – recorded at a time when the group were maybe more strongly linked to the bluesy sounds of the beat group generation than in later years – although still with a hint of some of the trippy touches to come! There's a surprisingly strong dedication to American blues roots at many moments – not just on some of the songs by Sonny Boy Williamson or Willie Dixon – but, maybe thanks to producer Mike Vernon, or more likely the genius of Alvin Lee, the guitars are already getting a bit fuzzy at times, and the keyboards have some unusual tones that you never would have heard on the south side of Chicago. Titles include "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes", "Spoonful", "Feel It For Me", "Help Me", "Adventures Of A Young Organ", "I Want To Know", and "Losing The Dogs". With 6 bonus tracks. CD
