VariousLong-Lost Honkers & Twangers – Unreleased 60s Gems From The Ventures, Fireballs, Rondels, Titans, & Reveliers – Plus Many Others ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 22.99
Killer instrumentals from the glory days of the garagey combo – a smoking little set that's very heavy on twangers – those wicked guitar-driven cuts that were often recorded with lots of cool echo and effects! Some of the names here are big ones, but most are smaller and lesser-known groups – and even the stars are represented by rare or unissued tracks – making the whole package as much fun as sorting through a rare pile of rock instrumental 45s from the 60s! And as usual with Ace, there's been plenty of care not just to choose the best tracks, but also provide excellent sound and a rich amount of history behind each number too – something you wouldn't get if you were only looking for 45s. Titles include "White Water" by The Reveliers, "The Psychedelic Worm" by Johnny & The Hurricanes, "Wax Em Down" by The Avantis, "Night Creature" by The Gigolos, "The Spur" by The Ventures, "Car Hop" by The Exports, "Loch Lamond Rock" by The Ramrods, "Flat Tyre" by The Reveliers, "Ghost Train" by The Swanks, and "Showboat" by The Rondels. ✨✧ Eddie Montalvo & Charlie SantiagoDrum Solos Vol 3 ... LP
Latin Percussion Ventures, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the rare excellent albums on the Latin Percussion Ventures label – and a spare set of percussion tracks that works well as a stripped-down Latin jazz album too! The pair in the title play conga, timbales, and bongos – and they get backing from Gilbert Colon on electric piano and Jose Santiago on bass – hardly any other instrumentation at all, but used in ways that really round things out nicely! The cuts have a spare groove that's really nice, and kind of sinister in its spareness – especially when the electric piano takes off next to the percussion – and the mighty Martin Cohen put the whole set together, with his legendary approach to production. Titles include "Tres Lindas Cubanas", "El Bollinski En D7", "Ramonita", and "Bamboleate" – each presented with and without solos! LP, Vinyl record album

Robert CobertDark Shadows – Original TV Soundtrack ... LP
Philips, 1969. Very Good ... $5.99
A wonderful wonderful soundtrack – recorded to accompany the strange horror/soap opera show Dark Shadows! The music is really weird – moogy at times, groovy at others – with lots of cool late 60s touches like fuzzy guitar, electric piano, and floating string and woodwind passages that have a really dark edge. Many of the tracks feature narration by stars Jonathan Frid and David Selby – creating a spooky sort of ghost story feel. And some of the even better tunes are instrumentals, with surprisingly groovy guitar in the front – creating an almost Ventures-like horror sound! Titles include "No 1 At The Blue Whale", "When I Am Dead", "Meditations", "I'll Be With You Always", "Josette's Theme", "Dark Shadows 2 Collinwood", "Shadows Of Night", "Seance", and "I Barnabas". ✨✧ Electric IndianKeem-O-Sabe ... LP
United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good ... $3.99
A goofy mix of groovy instrumental tracks with a weird "Apache"-esque instrumentation made up of some nicely processed guitars. The album's sort of funky in parts, with arrangements by Vince Montana that were recorded at Sigma Sound – and which have a late 60s Philly soul vibe to them. You may know the title cut, a goofy instrumental mini-hit, and other tracks include "Storm Warning", "Rain Dance", "What Does It Take To Win Your Love", and "Geronimo". Kind of Philly soul meets the Ventures! LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pride/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) Japanese reissue version includes 4 bonus tracks – "Sing Sing Sing", "Kiburi (part 1)", "Satisfaction", and "Last Bongo In Belgium (breakers mix)". CD

MarkettsOut Of Limits! ... LP
Warner, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
The title track's a mighty big hit for The Marketts – and it's also a great way to describe the group's talent for pushing past their boundaries at the time! The sound is surf instrumental at the core – but really stretches out to space themes, soundtrack areas, and more – thanks to inventive arrangements from Ray Pohlman, who pushes these guys farther than the usual groups of the time – while still keeping that guitar instrumental style that made them so great overall! There's a lot more variety to the tunes than you'd hear on a Ventures album, for example – and beautiful Bones Howe engineering makes sure that the sound is top-shelf throughout! Titles include the group's big hit reading of "Out Of Limits", plus "Bell Star", "Saturn", "Re-Entry", "Other Limits", "Twilight City", and "Limits Beyond". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Meek/Pierre Boulez/Luc FerrariI Hear A New World – The Pioneers Of Electronic Music (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". CD1 also features 11 more weird electronic tracks from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and from Ray Cathode. Then CD2 and CD3 move into the darker corners of experimental electronics and musique concrete – with works that include "Dripsody" by Hugh Le Caine, "Syncopation" by Tom Dissevelt, "Timbres Durees" by Olivier Messiaen, "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "The Innocents" by Daphne Oram, "Fontana Mix" by John Cage, "Visage V (parts 1, 2, & 3)" by Luc Ferrari, "Musica Su Due Dimensioni" by Bruno Maderna, "Deux Etudes De Musique Concrete For Magnetic Tape" by Pierre Boulez, "Fantasy In Space" by Otto Luening, and "Piece For Tape Recorder" by Vladimir Ussachevsky. Johnny SmithWalk, Don't Run! ... CD
Roost, 1954. Used ... $9.99
Don't go looking for this one in the discographies and record catalogs – because the album's actually a collection of material issued on earlier Johnny Smith 10" albums for Roost – brought together here in a wonderfully unified album! The sessions feature Smith in a great two-guitar format – one that has Perry Lopez playing rhythm guitar next to Johnny's lead – in a style that's got all these great cascading tones and flowing lines – perfect for the light touch that Smith brought to the hollow body at the time. Bass is by Arnold Fishkin and drums are by Don Lamond – and the album features a great original recording of Smith's composition "Walk Don't Run" (later made famous by The Ventures) – plus the tracks "What's New", "Easy To Love", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "How About You", and "Stranger In Paradise". A wonderfully groovy set of Christmas tracks – one done in a style very similar to the Get Easy Snow compilations – as you might guess from the title! The selection here is great – with a few perennial favorites, a few rare gems, and a great middle stretch of wonderful bits from some of the grooviest artists of the 60s and 70s – a great antidote to some of the too-played holiday music you might hear during the 12th month of the year! Titles include "Santa Claus Is Definitely Hear To Stay" by James Brown, "Close Your Mouth It's Christmas" by Free Design, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Jimmy McGriff, "Snow" by Claudine Longet, "Black Christmas" by The Emotions, "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" by The Temptations, "Christmas Gift" by Margie Joseph, "Winter Warm" by Bob Crewe Generation, "Snow Flakes" by The Ventures, "Winter Symphony" by The Beach Boys, "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway, "Children Go Where I Send Thee" by Kenny Burrell, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Ray Anthony & His Bookends, "Swinging Christmas" by Helmut Zacharias, and "Jingo Jango" by Bert Kaempfert. VariousMore Long Lost Honkers & Twangers – Rare 60s Instrumentals ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
Searing instrumentals from the glory days of the electric guitar – that initial moment when the fuzz was turned up, the echo expanded, and the instrument finally got a chance to step out in the lead in the kind of totally wonderful tracks like these! The Ventures are pictured on the cover, but most of the music is from an underground much deeper than that group – tracks delivered with a fair bit of darkness, often pulled from rare singles, and included here with 14 previously-unissued tracks! Many of these numbers are maybe more in a legacy of Link Wray than some of the cleaner surf rock groups of the time – and as always with Ace, the presentation, notes, and sound are superb. Titles include "Wolf Pack" by The Mus Twangs, "Mirage" by The Night Caps, "Diamond Back" by Cecil Moore & The Notes, "Red Wing" by The Carnations, "Zombie Surfer" by The Ramrods, "Swing The Mess Around" by Mike Gordon & The Agates, "Harlem Nocturne" by The Music City Swingers, "Peace Pipe" by The Marksmen, "Russian Roulette" by The Zanies, "Blue Money" by The Ventures, and "Guitare Jet" by Les Jaguars. ✨✧ Sounds IncorporatedSounds Incorporated/Sounds Incorporated Studio 2 Stereo ... CD
BGO (UK), 1964/1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rollicking, rocking goodness from the mid 60s UK scene – two albums from the hard-wailing Sounds Incorporated combo! The group hailed from the south of England, but had a rocking blend of guitar, sax, and drums that was much more in the Memphis instrumental mode of the time – and although they also had a talent for laying down some sweeter pop numbers, most of their work is very much in an upbeat rock instrumental mode – somewhere between The Champs and The Ventures – but also done with some occasional cool touches that vary up the mix a bit! The group's first album is a really tasty rough-n-ready affair – and their second is a bit fuller, with some added arrangements from time to time, and some clear evidence that the group's learned to play their instruments a bit better. Titles include "Crane", "Little Bird", "Grab This Thing", "What Now My Love", "Boil Over", "Rinky Dink", "Sounds Like Movin", "Fingertips", and "Bulletts". CD

✨✧ Juaneco Y Su ComboEl Gran Cacique ... LP

A cornerstone of the classic chica groove in Peru – and one of the albums that put Juaneco and his very groovy combo on the musical map of 70s South America! The tracks are mostly instrumental, and have a fantastically tight blend of percussion, keyboard lines, and electric guitar – the last of which has a style that's directly tied to surf guitar modes of the American west coast of the 60s – but with leaner, snakier, spookier styles that are completely sublime – and which often have a way of stepping around the rhythms that would have made The Ventures weep! Production is great – with just the right dose of echo to make everything sound even more wonderful – and titles include "El Pajarito Pajero", "La Marcha Del Sapo", "Aguita De Sachachorro", "Me Robaron Mi Runa Mula", "Vacilando Con Ayahuasca", "Volando", and "La Incognita". ✨✧ Spotnicks/Russ Garcia/Ron GoodwinOut Of This World (Music In Orbit/Fantastica) ... CD
El (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Space age pop galore – from a trio of very groovy sources! The Spotnicks start out the set with three cool guitar instrumentals – "Telstar", "Moonshot", and "Rocket Man" – done in their great blend of Ventures guitar modes and offbeat Joe Meek production styles – with a sound that's years ahead of its time! Next is the excellent album Out Of This World – from Brit arranger Ron Goodwin, with production by the legendary George Martin! The album was billed as Music In Orbit here in the US – and is a wonderful album of space-age easy listening! The album features no electronics, but Goodwin's use of soaring strings is somewhere between the Fantastic Planet soundtrack and some of the later moogy albums in the 60s. Scoring is richly sophisticated, with a complicated approach to the material that would befit a high-end 50s sci-fi soundtrack – made even better by the excellent cover, which features a beautiful purple painting of a rocket blasting off of a planet in space. The whole thing's perhaps a bit more romantic than spooky, but the mood changes nicely from track to track to keep things fresh. Titles include "The Moon", "The Venus Waltz", "Mercury Gets The Message", "The Sun", "Jumping Jupiter", and "Martians On Parade". Last up is Russ Garcia's Fantastica – one of the space-age bachelor pad electronic classics! Russ Garcia was mostly a jazz arranger in his day – but he does a good job of scoring some moody sci-fi tracks for this set – mixing full orchestrations with some great electronics handled by Ted Keep, all in a format that replicates a journey through the universe – with stops at lots of unusual galaxies along the way! The album's got a great mix of complicated strings and woodwinds, which offset the spooky electronics nicely – and although playful, the record also represents some of Garcia's most serious scoring on record. Titles include "Into Space", "Nova", "Monster's Of Jupiter", "Red Sands Of Mars", and "Moon Rise". CD

Captain SkyAdventures Of Captain Sky ... CD
AVI/Past Due, 1978. New Copy ... $15.99
A legendary funk set from late 70s Chicago – served up by our own Captain Sky, aka Daryl Cameron – an imposing figure who often worked in the same space-themed territory as the P-Funk empire in the mid 70s! The difference here, though, is that Cameron wrote, produced, and put the whole thing together himself – with help from a few friends in the studio – making the album a great homegrown attempt to rival the strength of the bigger funk ensembles of the period – something The Captain and crew do pretty darn well throughout! There's lots of heavy bass on the set – a strong precursor of modes to come – mixed with riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and plenty of tight rhythms – on cuts that include the famous sample cut "Super Sporm" – a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound – plus "Now That I Have You", "Saturday Night Move-Ease", "Wonder Worm" and "Can't Stop Now". Juju Dust/P-Vine (Japan), 2007. New Copy ... $22.99
Spacey soul from Coultrain – an up-and-coming singer from the St Louis scene, and one with a really unique sort of sound! The album's a wonderful debut effort – far more mature and complex than you might expect, with a really cosmic feel that's somewhere between 70s spacey soul and some of the more future-thinking work from the recent Detroit scene – yet all put together with a sense of timing and phrasing that's clearly Coultrain's own! Rhythms range from mellow and straightforward, to more complicated and angular – and Coultrain's voice is often great enough on its own, but sometimes sounds even better with a bit of flanged-out production. Most of the tracks are funk cuts created by mixing – ala the early years of the Melting Pot label – but there's also maybe more of a vintage vibe going on, and something of a Wu-Tang-inspired love of offbeat sounds and musical elements. Epic, 1975. Very Good- ... $14.99
Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Titles include the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP – and the titles "Simple Things", "Feeling That Your Feeling's Right", and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down". EMI (UK), 1974/1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A dream come true – Minnie's first two solo albums for Epic, back to back on one CD! Perfect Angel was one of THE albums that helped define the sound of female soul in the 70s – a record that moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". Adventures In Paradise is even better – and may well be Minnie's greatest album ever! The album's a sparkling work of jazzy soul, with touches of the heavenly production that Minnie got in years past, and lots of smooth mellow songs that are perfectly suited to her other-worldly voice. ✨✧ VariousFurther Adventures Of Mod Jazz ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Possibly the greatest installment so far in this wonderfully groovy series – a set of hard-swinging soul jazz tracks from the 60s – most of them the sort you might find blasting out of a jukebox in the backroom of some southside bar! Heavy Hammond, tremendous tenor, and gritty guitar lines abound – all upbeat and groovy, almost funky at times – served up in 2 or 3 minute installments from a batch of rare 45s! There's echoes here of the instrumental grooves that play big on the popcorn soul scene, but other work is more jazz-based overall – and although a few tunes have vocals, the biggest focus here is on instrumental numbers. Wonderful stuff throughout – and a collection we'll be playing for years! Titles include "Bash Dance" by Bobby Donaldson, "Arabian Jerk" by The Merits, "La La La La La" by Afro Blues Quintet, "Take Off Your Shoes (part 1)" by Booker T Averhart & The Mustangs, "Hung Over" by The Martinis, "Senor Blues" by Dee Clarke, "Sweet Bread" by Miles Grayson Trio, "All Around The World" by Chuck Higgins, "COD" by Albert King, "Fredrick's Dream" by Kenny Rice & Leo's Five, and "Tam-A-Rind" by Hank Jacobs & The TKOs. ✨✧ Jean Luc PontyMystical Adventures ... LP
Atlantic, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Definitely some mystical adventures here from Jean-Luc Ponty – one of the few artists on the violin who can make it come up with sounds like this – weird cool and spacey elements that sound great next to the album's use of organ, keyboard, and Fender Rhodes! The album features two long tracks – "Mystical Adventures" and "Final Truth" – both building nicely on straightforward themes which are then extrapolated by the fusiony solos – never too jamming or intense, but moving with a nice sense of progression, too. The album also features two shorter, catchier numbers – a compelling cover of Stevie Wonder's "As", plus "Rhythms Of Hope". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nina Blackwood/Mark Goodman/Alan Hunter/Martha Quin/Gavin EdwardsVJ – The Unplugged Adventures Of MTV's First Wave ... Book
Atria, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first big voices of MTV tell the tales of the early days of the influential music network – as Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn all spent quite a bit of time as on air "VJs" – which was the music television version of a radio jock! Back at the start, long before they started making their own shows, MTV was a showcase for short video clips by a huge variety of music artists – and the VJs would announce between videos, provide news content, and eventually grow into a role that had the network wielding surprisingly strong political power with young audiences by the end of the 80s. Writer Gavin Edwards helps shape the stories of the four VJs, but still retains their individual voices – as the book presents a few dozen short chapters, on a variety of subjects and moments in MTV history – with each VJ contributing thoughts and memories, almost like a roundtable discussion. Softcover, 318 pages. Book

Ferrante & TeicherPianos In Paradise ... LP
United Artists, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of the nicest albums that Ferrante & Teicher cut for United Artists! The record has bits of prepared piano over exotic backings – perhaps not as crazy as some of their albums for Westminster, but still with some good off-beat touches that make the album one of the few that's really worth seeking out by them. Plus, the Exotica arrangements give the piano pair a different sound than usual – a bit less staid, with a pretty nice batch pad groove. Titles include "Taboo", "Shangri La", "Moon Of Manakoora", "Negligee", "Jungle Drums", and "Adventures In Paradise". LP, Vinyl record album

Vincent HerringNight & Day ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. Used ... $9.99
One of the best records yet from alto sax player Vincent Herring! There's a strong, energetic style on his Smoke Sessions recordings that we really love – but that urgency never even comes close to inhibiting the soulful hard bop inspired rhythmic integrity. He's working with a great group of players that includes Mike LeDonne on piano, Brandi Disterheft on bass, Joe Farnsworth on drums and the always great trumpeter Jeremy Pelt on this one. Wonderful stuff from Herring, who really ought to be getting more acclaim for his strong work as a leader! Includes "Grind Hog's Day", "Night And Day", "The Adventures Of Hyun Joo Lee", "The Gypsy", "Fly, Little Bird, Fly", "Wabash", "Theme For Jobim", "There Is Something About You (I Don't Know", the LeDonne composition "Walton" and Herring's own excellent "Smoking Paul's Stash" to close. Madlib Invazion, 1990s/Early 2000s/2010. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Formative Madlib beatcraft – music made by 'Lib from 1990-2000 – crafted into a tight full length album that feels as fresh as ever! History Of The Loop Digga features funky hip hop instrumentals made at a time when he was producing underground beat tapes for himself and the Crate Diggas Palace crew of MCs. Raw Madlib hip hop beats from the early days with spackled with bits of vocals from Madlib & his Quasimoto alter ego, Declaime and others, plus mad vocal samples. At the core, it's excellent leftfield hip hop productions that aptly predicts for the unbridled genius to come, mixed in 2010 and feeling very much of the here and now. 34 shortish tracks on the CD for more than an hour of modern vintage Madlib. Titles include "Static Invazion", "Stakeout", "Rapper X Radio", "Last Day's Music", "Nothing For Nothing", "Live From Outer Space", "Further Adventures Of Walkman Flavor", "Real Days" "CDP Assassins" (Pts 1-6) and a slew of untitled episodes. Sun Ra & His Solar-Myth ArkestraSolar-Myth Approach Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey/BYG, Late 60s. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 20.00
Really unique material from Sun Ra – a pair of recordings that were initially circulated much more strongly than some of his Saturn Records material, thanks to the power of the BYG/Actuel label in the early 70s – but tracks that actually come from a variety of different sessions that Ra himself did with the Arkestra in the late 60s! Tracks are shortish, but very inventive – a well-chosen snapshot of all the new ideas that the group were cooking up during the end of the 60s in New York, with an increased mission to explore the outer reaches of space, and use more electronics than ever before! Ra plays some killer keyboards – moog, spacemaster, and acoustic piano – often with these really eerie tones – and other players include Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Akh Tal Ebah on space dimension mellophone, Ali Hassan on trombone, Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, John Gilmore on tenor, and Pat Patrick on baritone – and the whole group vocalizes at points, joined by other singers who include June Tyson and Art Jenkins. There's also some great use of "strange strings" on the sessions, not to mention a bit of reverb – and tracks titles include "Spectrum", "The Satellites Are Spinning", "Seen III Took 4", "Adventures Of Bugs Hunter", "Legend", "The Realm Of Lightning", "The Utter Nots", "Outer Spaceways Inc", "Scene 1 Take 1", "Strange Worlds", "Ancient Ethiopia", "Pyramids", and "Interpretation". Ten Years AfterTen Years After ... LP
Deram, 1967. Near Mint- ... $39.99
The great first album from Ten Years After – recorded at a time when the group were maybe more strongly linked to the bluesy sounds of the beat group generation than in later years – although still with a hint of some of the trippy touches to come! There's a surprisingly strong dedication to American blues roots at many moments – not just on some of the songs by Sonny Boy Williamson or Willie Dixon – but, maybe thanks to producer Mike Vernon, or more likely the genius of Alvin Lee, the guitars are already getting a bit fuzzy at times, and the keyboards have some unusual tones that you never would have heard on the south side of Chicago. Titles include "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes", "Spoonful", "Feel It For Me", "Help Me", "Adventures Of A Young Organ", "I Want To Know", and "Losing The Dogs". LP, Vinyl record album

WD FisherWD Fisher ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
WD Fisher were one of the first great prog groups on the French Canadian scene of the early 70s – and they're clearly one of the best, too – with an amazingly sharp sound that should have gotten the quintet some attention on our side of the border too! The rhythms are freewheeling, but tight – very much in the jazz-inspired sound of the Canterbury scene, but maybe with that second prog generation of more focus – which really comes through in both the guitar and keyboard lines, and the way that the group harmonizes some of the vocals together, which really provides a stronger anchor for some of the long-spun instrumental inclinations. Titles include "Eden's Dream", "I Do Love You", "Beggar", "William D Fisher's Adventures", and "You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousHammond Heroes – 60s R&B Organ Grooves ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of 60s Hammond organ groovers – and from sources you might not normally expect! Given the fame of jazz players on the instrument – like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff – it's easy to forget how many rock and roll groups were also playing the Hammond in the 60s – clearly inspired by the work of Smith, McGriff, and others – but taking the instrument into a unique pre-fusion world that blended together rock, soul, jazz, and funk! And while much of the groups' work on organ was often overlooked alongside their more famous vocals, this set really corrects that fact by bringing together an all-instrumental lineup – 23 tracks pulled from lost albums and singles from some of the best of the British scene at the time – the cream of the crop of the beat group generation who were so influenced by American soul and jazz! Titles include "Stevie's Groove" by Spender Davis Group, "Jumping Jack Flash" by Wynder K Frog, "Zoom Widge & Wag" by Bobby Graham, "Working Out" by Dave Davani, "Adventures Of A Young Organ" by Ten Years After, "Jive Samba" by Remo Four, "Horses Cellar" by Peddlers, "Zoot's Sermon" by Zoot Money, "Critic's Choice" by Alan Price Set, and "Impressions Of Oliver" by Herd.
