✨✧ Calvin ArnoldFunky Way – The Venture Recordings 1967 to 1969 ... CD
Venture/Kent, Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
The first-ever full length collection of work by Calvin Arnold – a killer 60s soul singer and guitarist, and one who cut some classic funky 45s back in the day, but never got a chance to record an album! All the material here came out on the Venture label – a small label, but one that got great circulation at the time – which helped Calvin's strong style get into more record collections than you might expect! Arnold's a great singer, with a raw southern style – and the use of guitar here really underscores all the best elements in his voice, as does the lean backings, which often have nice drums! The style here kind of takes off where Otis Redding's "Hard To Handle" began – strong praise in our book – and titles include "Snatchin Back", "Funky Way", "Scoobie Doo", "Mini Skirt, "Fool Me Baby", "Lovely Way To Go", "Just A Matter Of Time", "Messin With The Old Folks Home", "Your Love Is Too Much", and "You Got To Live For Yourself". 49th Parallel49th Parallel (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Venture/Lion (Canada), 1969. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A gem of a record from the Cali scene of the late 60s – even though it was recorded in LA by a band from Canada! 49th Parallel are one of the great lost groups from the time – a combo who've got a sound that's very fresh, very much their own, yet who also resonate with all the best elements of the period – as they weave their own unique blend of psych and sunshine pop styles through the music! There's occasional horns on the record at times, but never in a jazz rock way – just a touch of brass to give things a bit more punch, used lightly and rightly, and in a very groovy way. Sometimes the guitars get a bit freaky and fuzzy, but never in any style that's overblown to threaten the sweetness of the vocals – and titles include "Now That I'm A Man", "Get Away", "Eye To Eye", "Missouri", "Lazerander Flitchy", "Twilight Woman", "Close The Barn Door", and "The People". CD features lots more bonus tracks – the titles "All Your Love", "Laborer", "You Do Things", "She Says", "Citizen Freak", "I Need You", "Goodtime Baby", and "Up To No Good" – plus some single mixes too! George HarrisonAll Things Must Pass (2CD set) ... CD
GN Records/Capitol, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
Maybe one of the greatest things that George Harrison did after the breakup of The Beatles – not his first solo album, but yet his first non-experimental venture – and a triple-length set that's filled with magic throughout! This isn't one of those "shoulda been a single record" sets – as Harrison has this amazing ability to craft new tunes with new styles in a way that really sets the record apart from his later work with The Beatles – maybe a summation of all those wonderful little moments that George was starting to add to their records, but fully blossomed here into a field's worth of fantastic musical flowers. Titles include "My Sweet Lord", "Wah Wah", "I'd Have You Anytime", "What Is Life", "Run Of The Mill", "Isn't It A Pity", "Plus Me In", "Thanks For The Pepperoni", "Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp", "Beware Of Darkness", "Out Of The Blue", and "Hear Me Lord". ✨✧ Gato BarbieriChapter One – Latin America ... LP
Impulse, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
We love this record! Although Gato Barbieri has put out a few snoozers in his career, this amazing first chapter of his Latin venture for Impulse is an incredible record throughout – one of the greatest Impulse sessions of the 70s! Gato returns to his native Argentina for the session – and works with a collective of musicians in Buenos Aires to create a sound that's a startling blend of Latin rhythms and post-Coltrane freeness. Barbieri's tone is amazing, and has a rich Pharoah Sanders-ish spirituality to it – soaring out over acoustic percussion and Latin rhythms with an earthy, organic sound that's completely wonderful! Titles include "Encuentros", "India", "Nunca Mas", and the fantastic "To Be Continued". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lester Bowie's Brass FantasyTwilight Dreams ... LP
Virgin, 1988. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A cooker of a record from Lester Bowie – one that takes the earlier sound of the Brass Fantasy ensemble, and focuses it into a mode that shows his growing love of soul and funk! The set was issued on the the short-lived Venture imprint of Virgin – a surprisingly strong outlook for creative projects like this – and the vibe's quite different than the Brass Fantasy records cut for ECM – with almost a bit more soul at the bottom, and a compact sort of energy that really sends the ideas home. Players include Bowie, Stanton Davis, Malachi Thompson, and Sasul Siddik on trumpets – plus Steve Turre and Frank Lacy on trombones, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Phil Wilson on drums. Titles include a surprisingly great remake of "Thriller" – plus "Vibe Waltz", "I Am With You", "Duke's Fantasy", "Personality", and "Twilight Dreams". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Flying Burrito BrothersGilded Palace Of Sin/Burrito Deluxe ... CD
A&M, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 Burritos LPs back-to-back on one CD! Gilded Palace Of Sin is truly a country rock masterpiece – one of the greatest rock(ish) albums of the late 60s – with traditionally structured nuggets that still manage to venture fully into the soulful, exploratory capacities of sunny 60s pop. Perfection! Tracks include "Christine's Tune", "Do Right Woman", "Dark End Of The Street", the anti-Vietnam War anthem "My Uncle", "Hot Burrito #1", "Hot Burrito #2" and more! Burrito Deluxe is more of a group effort (Gram Parsons held the reins on the first record), and a slightly less trippy album, and a bit more of a hodgepodge. The record has more of a focus on the roots rock elements than more soaring Gilded Palace. Tracks include "Lazy Days", "Image Of Me", "High Fashion Queen", "Man In The Fog", "Older Guys", Down In The Churchyard", "Wild Horses" and more. CD

✨✧ VenturesSuper Psychedelics ... LP
Liberty, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wild work from The Ventures – a set that really has them trying to change with the times – and coming up with some excellent sounds in the process! The inside cover features a cool "photo story" of the group – very unusual, as it shows the aging quartet trying to act real groovy and camp it up for the camera – like some surf act on Capitol – yet they only come off looking stiff and flat. Fortunately, the music more than makes up for the visuals – as the group's well-crafted guitar lines are a perfect fit for the album's pop psych tunes! And instead of the easy covers you might expect, there's a wealth of original material here – proof that the group could still write some great ones when they wanted – as you'll hear on "Psychedelic Venture", "Guitar Psychedelics", "Reflections", "Endless Dream", "Psyched Out", "1999 AD", and "Vibrations". Captain SkyAdventures Of Captain Sky ... CD
AVI/Past Due, 1978. Used ... $28.99
A legendary funk set from late 70s Chicago – served up by our own Captain Sky, aka Daryl Cameron – an imposing figure who often worked in the same space-themed territory as the P-Funk empire in the mid 70s! The difference here, though, is that Cameron wrote, produced, and put the whole thing together himself – with help from a few friends in the studio – making the album a great homegrown attempt to rival the strength of the bigger funk ensembles of the period – something The Captain and crew do pretty darn well throughout! There's lots of heavy bass on the set – a strong precursor of modes to come – mixed with riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and plenty of tight rhythms – on cuts that include the famous sample cut "Super Sporm" – a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound – plus "Now That I Have You", "Saturday Night Move-Ease", "Wonder Worm" and "Can't Stop Now". One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". Solar/Octave (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A great second adventure from Dynasty – the kind of set that shows why the group went on to become one of the strongest things going in the second chapter of the Solar Records soul empire from LA! The album begins with a rock-solid punch, then continues strongly throughout – basslines, guitar riffs, and funky drums all right on the money – used in a way that's somehow fresher than most of the larger funk groups of the time – and with a nice balance between mellower moments that still seem to have a gentle kind of groove. The energy is wonderful throughout – and titles include "Give It Up For Love", "Love In The Fast Lane", "Revenge", "Here I Am", "A Man In Love", and "You're My Angel". ✨✧ Peter GuralnickLooking To Get Lost – Adventures In Music & Writing (hardcover) ... Book
Little Brown, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 30.00
Peter Guralnick has written some mighty big, career-defining books on key figures in music – but from the start, we've always loved his shorter pieces the best – the kind of work we first fell in love with in books like Sweet Soul Music and Lost Highway! And if you dig his shorter pieces, there's plenty of those here – really wonderful essays on artists in a variety of genres – penned by one of the few figures who can balance an understanding of their music with a mixture of historical detail and unabashed fandom! Guralnick's writing has gotten better and better over the years – and it's great to have it focused back on his roots – in chapters that focus on artists who include Solomon Burke, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, Howlin Wolf, Tammy Wynette, and even the great country trucker Dick Curless! There's a vampire with a flute on the cover – and that image alone is more than enough to make us drop the needle on this rare Japanese gem from the 70s! And fortunately, the sound of the music is equally cool – funky fusion with some nicely spacey currents – almost a Mizell Brothers vibe at points, in the way elements can swirl around in the mix, and attain this wonderfully full power without ever sounding too commercial at all! There's definitely some of that flute on the record, but the keyboards are maybe even cooler – as is all the electric instrumentation, which comes together in a sublime way! The script was written by Terry D'Oberoff, with electronics by Douglas Leedy – but it's Price who makes the whole thing really work, reading in a dark, spooky tone, set in a really echoey space – really making us believe that he knows all about this weird stuff! ✨✧ Minnie RipertonAdventures In Paradise ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Titles include the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP – and the titles "Simple Things", "Feeling That Your Feeling's Right", and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down". Robert SavageAdventures Of Robert Savage Volume 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Paramount/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 24.99
There never was a second volume of work from Robert Savage – but maybe that's because he has enough musical adventures on this set to last him a lifetime! Savage is better known as Bobby Arlin, who started out with The Leaves – and his guitar here is far more searing than his work on the LA scene of the late 60s – certainly informed by the rise of British hard rock at the time, but with a boldness that's all its own! The odd cover is hardly a hint at what's inside – as Bobby works with a lean trio of just bass and drums, and none of the trappings that prog-like image might make you expect – qualities that are underscored with some occasional rootsy inflections, and a nice sort of attitude in the vocals. Titles include "Seven Days Drunk", "Don't Run & Hide", "Beaver Baby", "Milk Run", "Save Us From The Cyclops", and "Road Apples". CD

VenturesVentures Play Telstar – Lonely Bull ... LP
Dolton, 1962. Near Mint- ... $14.99
The Ventures were furiously productive in the early 60s – delivering gem after gem – and this is among the best! Telstar is somewhere near the ninth record by the group, offering a dizzying mix of covers of some of the most popular songs of the day. The guitar still leads as the main sound on these tracks but they do expand the instrumentation to include organ, trumpet, mandolins and harpsichord as well. They sing a little on some of the tracks but they mainly stay in the instrumental realm. Greatness! Tracks include "Telstar", "The Lonely Bull", "Mexico", "Calcutta", "Apache", "Never On A Sunday", "Tequila", "Green Onions", "Let There Be Drums", and "Red River Rock". LP, Vinyl record album

Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 39.99
The end of the 80s saw a huge new shift in music on the UK scene – a moment when indie rock and club music collided – and guitar-based work was back on the dancefloors in a really big way! Part of the shift came from years of UK interest in house, electro, and other American styles – which were often spun alongside post-punk and indie material in the same clubs (maybe most famously at the Hacienda in Manchester) – leading to a surprising blend of styles that breathed a lot of new life into the world of rock music as well! This set captures cuts from the key years of this moment – the post-1988 summer of love period through years when dance might take over more completely – a much-loved moment, filled with well-remembered cuts – presented here in a big box set that features many rare mixes from 12" singles as well. The box brings together 57 tracks in all, all with detailed notes on the music – and includes work from Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, 808 State, Inspiral Carpets, Future Sound Of London, Electronic, Candy Flip, Telescopes, Hollow Men, Spacemen 3, Spin, World Of Twist, Mock Turtles, Northside, The Moonflowers, Charlatans, Shamen, Blow Up, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, The Dylans, Saint Etienne, and others! Charly (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 32.99
A wealth of rare funky 45 and album cuts – served up here in a selection that really lives up to the "rare soul" promise of the title! Some of these cuts are rare groove classics from back in the day – the big years when UK DJs first started playing older 70s cuts – and some of them are numbers that have been discovered in more recent years, showing that the field for rare soul collectors is always wide open, if you know where to dig! Titles include "Smooth Sailing" by Three Shades Of Soul, "Look What You've Done For Me" by Al Jarreau, "Every Day's A New Day" by Teresa Graves, "Take My Best Shot" by Liberation, "Be Your Man" by The Harmonics, "If We Don't" by 94 East with Prince, "You Put A Hurtin On Me" by Mary Mundy, "I'm Walking Away" by Gene Townsel, "I'm Crazy About You" by Brief Encounter, and "I Love You Pretty Baby" by Touch Of Class. A set that's almost a back to basics effort for DJ Shadow, yet one that's also a strong step forward too – basic in that it's a record that's almost all instrumental, with no guests at all – but forward because it's got a leaner groove, and a style that shows just how far Shadow has moved past the more hip hop/turntablist style of his roots! There's almost a cinematic vibe to the music at times – a mode that fits the action adventure of the title, with plenty of cuts that would be right at home on classic soundtracks, especially of the 80s crime/cop/action style – served up with just the right sorts of beats, basslines, and keyboards to echo that era! Titles include "A Narrow Escape", "You Played Me", "Time & Space", "Forever Changed", "She's Evolving", "Reflecting Pool", "Free For All", "Ozone Scraper", and "Witches Vs Warlocks". CD

✨✧ DynastyAdventures In The Land Of Music ... LP
Solar, 1980. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lots of musical adventures here – most of them in that tightly-romping style that made Dynasty so great back in the day – almost a fusion of older sweet group soul with some of the more bottom-driven modes forged by the Solar label! The keyboards are upfront, the basslines strong, and the group is completely tight on the money – at a level that made them one of the strongest 80s proponents of the Solar Records groove. The title cut here is our favorite – a sweet stepper that bursts out with this blast of sound that's totally great – completely captivating, and filled with cascading sounds that really grab us. Other tracks include "Ice Breaker", "Something To Remember", "Day & Night", "Do Me Right", and "I've Just Begun To Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

Muse, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from Clifford Jordan – proof that the 70s were possibly the greatest decade for his music! Although most of Jordan's contemporaries from the big tenor days of the 50s really didn't grow much during the 70s, Clifford always continued to develop his style – adding in modes and tones that he'd never played before, working in an ever rich tapestry of jazz that makes just about any of his albums from the time a delight. Even this session – a simple quartet date recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Bill Lee, and Grady Tate – offers lots of wonderful moments, and is kind of a post-righteous 70s soul jazz album, filled with lots of warm tones and straight soulful playing that are almost a back to earth moment after his Strata East years – but still equally expressive. Titles include "He's A Hero", "No More", "Quasimodo", and "Adventurer". LP, Vinyl record album

With Stan at the helm, you can bet that this set is anything but "blues" in the traditional sense – and is instead more one of Kenton's tone poems of color – tuned to the darker hues of the spectrum, and served up perfectly in a batch of beautifully shimmering arrangements! There's still plenty of Kenton's modern touches in the way the album's laid out, but the overall feel is moody and blue-toned – arranged mostly by Gene Roland, who also composed all the original tracks for the set. Cherry Red (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Key club cuts from the second generation of the industrial scene – that 80s moment when the music moved from the noisy, experimental territory of the Throbbing Gristle underground to a more mainstream world where the previous sonic breakthroughs were mixed with beats and lyrics to create some surprisingly danceable tracks! Here in Chicago, we had Wax Trax to thank us for introducing us to lots of this music – but on the other side of the Atlantic, some of these groups were getting plenty of play both on radio and in nite spots – using darker beats and basslines to surprisingly great effect. The package is maybe worth it alone for "Yon Yonson" by the Dave Howard Singers – a cut we thought nobody in the world remembered – and the 3CD package features 44 titles in all, with work from Attrition, Meat Beat Manifesto, A:Grumh, Lead Into Gold, Nocturnal Emissions, Test Dept, SPK, Front 242, Renegade Soundwave, Severed Heads, Age Of Chance, Laibach, Neon Judgement, The Weathermen, Section 25, Die Krupps, MAD, Legendary Pink Dots, Son Of Sam, Esplendor Geometrico, Hunting Lodge, Borghesia, Alein Sex Fiend, and others! A rare groover from the team of Ray Brown and Quincy Jones – a smoking little set that completely revises the music for The Adventurers! The original score for the film featured tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim, played by Deodato – a great combination at the time, but completely different than the heavy funk laid out here by Ray and Quincy! The pair really cook things up strongly here – hitting some of the best funky vibes you'd hear on Quincy Jones scores from the late 60s and early 70s – or some of Ray Brown's funkiest jazz sessions of the time. Brown leads the band, and the set's produced by Quincy – who also arranged some tracks – with help from JJ Johnson, Tom Scott, and Jimmy Jones too. Massively groovy work from Chico Hamilton – one of his standout swingers for Impulse Records in the 60s, and a set that really showcases all the changes in music he'd made for the decade! The set features some wonderful reed work from Jerome Richardson and Charlie Mariano, plus some especially great guitar from Gabor Szabo – a player who was rising to fame in Hamilton's group, but also stands out here with lots of the breezy grooves he'd bring to his own dates for Impulse. Tracks are short, but in a good way that really keeps them focused – and other players who complete the groove include Clark Terry on trumpet and Ron Carter on bass – both of whom nicely pick up Chico's sense of adventure and humor. A great tenor saxophonist from the Japanese scene of the 70s – heard here in one of his hippest settings ever! Seiichi Nakamura really knows how to stretch things out, yet still keep things interesting – working here with a strong sense of rhythm that's really augmented by the use of guitar in the group alongside piano, bass, and drums – and instrument handled by Kiyoshi Sugimoto with these wide flares that roll along beautifully and give the rhythm a strong sense of color – while Nakamura blows these brilliantly bold lines over the top! Capitol, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Liberty, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great material from the second chapter of Del Shannon – a time when the previous pop legend opened up to trippier modes – which makes for a really great blend on this gem of an album from 1968! Even at his pop best, there was always a genuine strain of soul-searching sadness in his voice that underscored the material, going all the way back to "Runaway" and on some of the better, if lesser-remembered work after that immortal hit. He manages to carry that trait strongly into the psych era here, with a lot of lusher baroque pop elements, and some great instrumentation – all orchestrated by Don Peake. Includes "Thinking It Over", "Be My Friend", "Silver Birch", "Rover Cool", "Colour Flashing Hair", "Gemini", "Runnin' On Back", "Conquer", "Been So Long", "Magical Musical Box", and "New Orleans (Mardi Gras)". Space seemed to be a logical direction for Lenny White to go – since his high-powered fusion drumming style is enough to power him right out of the galaxy! This album's a hard heavy batch of funky fusion tunes – with lots of hard drums by Lenny, and spacey spacey keyboards by the great Don Blackman! Patrick Gleeson had a hand in some of the synthesizer work, and he gives the album a similar astral sound to the work he did on the Mercury label at the same time. Definitely some mystical adventures here from Jean-Luc Ponty – one of the few artists on the violin who can make it come up with sounds like this – weird cool and spacey elements that sound great next to the album's use of organ, keyboard, and Fender Rhodes! The album features two long tracks – "Mystical Adventures" and "Final Truth" – both building nicely on straightforward themes which are then extrapolated by the fusiony solos – never too jamming or intense, but moving with a nice sense of progression, too. 4 albums worth of material by arranger Pete Rugolo – all served up in one totally great 2CD package! The work here is from some of Pete's best time in the studio as a leader – sessions done for Mercury Records in 1956, originally issued on the albums Music For Hi Fi Bugs, Out On A Limb, Adventures In Sound Brass, and Adventures In Sound Reeds! Pete's really stretching out here – shaking off some of the tightness of his Columbia years, and working in styles that are often more modern and complex – taking him back to his roots with Stan Kenton, but also showing off some of the colors and tones that worked supremely well during Rugolo's sessions with other singers. Players on the tracks include the cream of the LA scene at the time – Bud Shank, Frank Rosolino, Dave Pell, Barney Kessel, Shelly Manne, John Graas, Russ Freeman, Bob Cooper, and many others – and the package features a total of 39 tracks that include "For Hi Fi Bugs", "Later Team", "Dream Of You", "Ballade For Drums", "Cha-Lito Linda", "Nancy", "Repetitious Riff", "Godchild", "Interlude", "Our Waltz", "Polytonal Blues", "Song For Tuba", and "Impressionism". Pacific Jazz, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing! Although this album's a soundtrack to some goofy California surfer film, it's actually a killer batch of off-kilter jazz tracks composed by Bud Shank, and with a sound that's unlike anything we've ever heard from him! The frontline of the session is Shank, Bob Cooper, and Carmell Jones – but forget any conceptions you may have about West Coast Cool for a set like this, because Jones' off-kilter hardbop approach is in full-tilt, and the set grooves with an amazing modernist edge. Part of this may be due to the presence of Gary Peacock and Dennis Budimer in the album's sextet grouping – but we actually think the real genius lies with Shank, who scored the whole fershlugger thing, and who plays with a sinister tone that just cuts us to the quick. One of our favorite west coast albums of all time – honest! Titles include "Jungle Cruise", "Ala Moana", and "How Hight The Makaha". LP, Vinyl record album

A cooking set of live performances by The Ventures – key proof that their searing guitar sounds weren't just the result of some studio trickery! The set features the group in three different settings – at home in the US, over in the UK, and in Japan – where they enjoyed a huge amount of fame in the 60s! All cuts are mighty smoking – core grooves that are heavy on tight, fuzzy guitar lines – and driven by drums that are arguably even more pounding than on the studio albums. Very different sounds than what you might expect from the title – not exotica at all, nor some of the more familiar Afro Funk material issued by the Africa Seven label – and instead a great range of tracks that really seems to defy genre or description! Some of the work here is by artists who've gotten a bit more attention in the 21st century, others are still quite obscure – and the music moves between jazzy groovers, spacey soul numbers, and other very offbeat modes – including one track that's a pretty great electric piano solo! A groovy collection of psychedelic pop tunes from the Apple Records era – singles that range from a sort of Beatles-esque pop psyche miasma, to far odder bits that are still gloriously tuneful – songs by Fire, Sands, Grapefruit, Denis Couldy, Rawlings And Hupstep and many more! On top of being kind of a time capsule of some of the stranger pop tunes to flirt with the mainstream of the time, the some of the bands here include young members who would move on the some greener pastures in bands like Badfinger. Groovy stuff! 18 tracks in all: "Father'sName Is Dad" by Fire, "Listen To The Sky" by Grapefruit, "Forgive And Forget" by Rawlings And Huckstep, "Goodbye Mozart" by Gallagher & Lyle, "Tea And Toast Mr Watson" by Denis Couldry, "Fall Of The Castle" by Grapefruit, "How Does It Feel" by Iveys, "Fantastic Story Of The Steam Driven Banana" by Legay and more. ✨✧ Aksak MaboulUne Aventure De VV – Made To Measure 48 ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really cool project from this always-unique group – a set that follows in their pan-global legacy of sounds, but which also adapts them to more of a soundtrack sort of setting – as you might guess from the album's appearance in the Made To Measure series! The music is strong throughout, but also works to engage a series of sung and spoken text passages – all words penned by Veronique Vincent (hence the title) – and performed by Blaine L Reininger, Laetitia Sader, Alig Fodder, and others. The project is inspired by sonic projects on European radio from years back – but it's also got a sound that's very much in the spirit of the Crammed label at its height – and maybe a bit like that of the contemporary imprint Les Disques Du Crepuscle too. Titles include "Veille Au Reve", "Miracle Au Jardin, "L'Ombre Double", "Talking With The Birds", "The Eraser", "Zone Blanche", "Brown Dwarves", and "I Walk & I Walk". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jerry Blocker & OthersAdventures In Negro History ... LP
Pepsi Cola, 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A long spoken set that chronicles the story of African Americans from the days of slavery up through the 20th century. The album was produced by Pepsi, with a style that's kind of like a radio show – narration, plus sound effects, and some dramatized passages as well. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Calibro 35Nouvelle Adventures (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really new adventure from the funky combo Calibro 35 – a set that's a step away from some of their more cinematic-inspired projects, and one that has the group really honing their skills as a tight funky group! The drums are heavier, guitars are fuzzier, and the whole thing really grooves with an even faster pace than before – still with the majesty they always brought to their work, but maybe more intimate as well. The drums alone are worth the price of admission – and titles include "Gunpowder", "Extraorinaire", "Bolero", "Novecento E Mille", "Milan Au 30eme Siecle", and "Dinamometro". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maria GoliaOrnette Coleman – The Territory & The Adventure ... Book
Reaktion (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A deep look at the music and genius of Ornette Coleman – one that offers up so many different aspects of his career that go way past the records that we know and love – including lots of details of Coleman's early life, and his ties to other non-music communities as well! Author Maria Golia ran the Caravan Of Dreams venue with which Ornette was tied in the 80s – and really has a great sense of perspective on his work – not just locating him in Los Angeles and New York scenes that he helped shape – but also giving plenty of time to his Texas roots and overseas experiences. The book also includes some unpublished black and white photographs, and runs for 368 pages in this softcover edition. Book

✨✧ Stan KentonAdventures In Blues ... CD
Capitol, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Dragonwyck", "Blue Ghost", "Exit Stage Left", "Aphrodisia", "Fitz", and "The Blues Story". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Ten Bars Ago", "Lady Luck", and "Night At The Gold Nugget (first version)". CD

✨✧ Stan KentonAdventures In Jazz ... LP
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Stan reprises his famous modernist swing in a great little album that's one of his best works from the early 60s. The tracks are longish, with the mixture of dark shading and breakout solos that grace some of his best early work – and although the players in the group aren't the famous west coasters that Stan first brought to fame, they all do a fine job when the solo moment comes. Titles include "Waltz Of The Prophets", "Turtle Talk", "Malaguena", and "Body & Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

Ash Ra Tempel & Timothy LearySeven Up ... CD
Made In Germany (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99 About March 1, 2024
A bizarre but brilliant meeting between LSD prophet and accused FBI informer Timothy Leary and Germany's legendary prog/Kosmiche rock band Ash Ra Tempel! Seven Up kicks off rather tightly, the group delivering an accessible and inviting psych blues sound, though it doesn't take long to spiral out into vividly surreal strangeness! It still brings back the cohesive, rocking undercurrent – making for a pretty tense balance throughout! It features 2 side-long adventures, "Space" and "Time". You will travel through both while listening to this album! CD

Current RageSeven Songs (with bonus tracks) (clear yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
EOD/Propeller, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.99
Current Rage were one of the more obscure groups to come out of the Athens, GA scene in the early 80s – but they've also got all the instantly creative energy that made that short-lived world of music every bit as exciting as some of the best New York sounds at the time! There's a nicely choppy approach to the rhythms going on here, and plenty of strong guitar play too – deft music that's somewhere in the territory of Pylon, and like that group, maybe a warmer US answer to British post-punk sounds of the same time. Titles include "Right Side Of The Brain", "Bitte Schoen", "Sweet Torture", "My Dog Sam", "Looking Through Gels", and "Scream In The Dark". Expanded version features bonus tracks that include "Adventures In America", "Punch A Clock", "The Theme", "Constant Hiss", and live tracks "My Dog Sam", "AF", "Tequila", and "The Book Pressed Flowers". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition yellow vinyl pressing.)
