✨✧ Calvin ArnoldFunky Way – The Venture Recordings 1967 to 1969 ... CD
Venture/Kent, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length collection of work by Calvin Arnold – a killer 60s soul singer and guitarist, and one who cut some classic funky 45s back in the day, but never got a chance to record an album! All the material here came out on the Venture label – a small label, but one that got great circulation at the time – which helped Calvin's strong style get into more record collections than you might expect! Arnold's a great singer, with a raw southern style – and the use of guitar here really underscores all the best elements in his voice, as does the lean backings, which often have nice drums! The style here kind of takes off where Otis Redding's "Hard To Handle" began – strong praise in our book – and titles include "Snatchin Back", "Funky Way", "Scoobie Doo", "Mini Skirt, "Fool Me Baby", "Lovely Way To Go", "Just A Matter Of Time", "Messin With The Old Folks Home", "Your Love Is Too Much", and "You Got To Live For Yourself". BalladsGift Of Love ... LP
Venture/P-Vine (Japan), Late 1960s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 38.99
West coast harmony soul genius – a full early album of work by The Ballads – a sweet soul group who really live up to their name! The tracks here are all mellow soul with a near-perfect quality – vocals that step and slide together in a gentle, heartfelt sort of way – never too slick, and always with a heartbreaking sound that rivals some of the better-known east coast examples of the genre. Production is by Willie Hutch, Leon Ware, and Clarence Paul – and the album's a super-rare effort from the mostly-singles Venture label – with tracks that include "Good Bless Our Love", "You're The One", "I Love You Yeah", "The Gift Of Love", "Weakspot", "Hey Diddle Diddle", and "Goodnight My Love". CD also features 9 more bonus tracks – including "Right Track (parts 1 & 2)", "I Can't See Your Love", "Do It Now", "I Love You Yeah", and "I Hope I Never Fall In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Venture/Lion, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
A gem of a record from the Cali scene of the late 60s – even though it was recorded in LA by a band from Canada! 49th Parallel are one of the great lost groups from the time – a combo who've got a sound that's very fresh, very much their own, yet who also resonate with all the best elements of the period – as they weave their own unique blend of psych and sunshine pop styles through the music! There's occasional horns on the record at times, but never in a jazz rock way – just a touch of brass to give things a bit more punch, used lightly and rightly, and in a very groovy way. Sometimes the guitars get a bit freaky and fuzzy, but never in any style that's overblown to threaten the sweetness of the vocals – and titles include "Now That I'm A Man", "Get Away", "Eye To Eye", "Missouri", "Lazerander Flitchy", "Twilight Woman", "Close The Barn Door", and "The People". Venture, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A weird late 60s set from this California group – one that's got a rocking small combo feel at parts, but a partly rural sound too! The vibe's almost like some of the party groups that played the southern circuit in the 60s, but a bit more west coast too – never really psyche or fuzz, but certainly heading that way. Instrumentation includes guitar, organ, bass, and drums – and titles include "Fresh As A Daisy", "Hollywood Honeys", "Tryin To Fly My Kite", "I'm Moving On", "I'm Proud To Be", and "Get On Board The Train". ✨✧ Lester Bowie's Brass FantasyTwilight Dreams ... CD
Virgin, 1988. Used ... $8.99
A cooker of a record from Lester Bowie – one that takes the earlier sound of the Brass Fantasy ensemble, and focuses it into a mode that shows his growing love of soul and funk! The set was issued on the the short-lived Venture imprint of Virgin – a surprisingly strong outlook for creative projects like this – and the vibe's quite different than the Brass Fantasy records cut for ECM – with almost a bit more soul at the bottom, and a compact sort of energy that really sends the ideas home. Players include Bowie, Stanton Davis, Malachi Thompson, and Sasul Siddik on trumpets – plus Steve Turre and Frank Lacy on trombones, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Phil Wilson on drums. Titles include a surprisingly great remake of "Thriller" – plus "Vibe Waltz", "I Am With You", "Duke's Fantasy", "Personality", and "Twilight Dreams". CD

Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of our favorite Ulmer records, probably because there's a nice groove running underneath most of the numbers, in a sort of post-Prime Time 80s out-funk sort of way. It never drops into a flat out back beat, but there's always some sense of time, while Ulmer's guitar and Charles Burnham's violin venture to and fro. The group is just a trio, and there's not too much of Blood's vocalizing going on on the eight pieces, which include "Little Red House", "Are you Glad To Be In America", "Election" and "Odyssey". Ace (UK), Late 1960s. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
Raw 60s rockers galore – a set of tracks that are so hard, so heavy, they almost seem to prefigure the sound, style, and attitude of punk rock – even though most of the songs were recorded a decade before! The mighty Keb Darge has given us excellent collections of rare funk and rockabilly over the years – and here, he dips into the large catalog of Ace Records – and, in the best Ace tradition, brings together hard-to-find vintage singles, and some never-issued cuts that appear here on vinyl for the first time ever! Titles include "No Silver Bird" by The Hooterville Trolley, "They Can't Hurt Me" by The Lyrics, "I" by The Knight Riders, "Too Late To Kiss You Now" by The Chords, "She's Gone" by The Tormenters, "Grey Zone" by The Fog, "Who Knows" by The Nightcrawlers, "Good & Bad" by Venture 5, "Come See Me" by Sandy Edmonds, and "Hang It Out To Dry" by Bud & Kathy. ✨✧ Gato BarbieriChapter One – Latin America ... LP
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We love this record! Although Gato Barbieri has put out a few snoozers in his career, this amazing first chapter of his Latin venture for Impulse is an incredible record throughout – one of the greatest Impulse sessions of the 70s! Gato returns to his native Argentina for the session – and works with a collective of musicians in Buenos Aires to create a sound that's a startling blend of Latin rhythms and post-Coltrane freeness. Barbieri's tone is amazing, and has a rich Pharoah Sanders-ish spirituality to it – soaring out over acoustic percussion and Latin rhythms with an earthy, organic sound that's completely wonderful! Titles include "Encuentros", "India", "Nunca Mas", and the fantastic "To Be Continued". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Andrew HillGrass Roots (plus unissued session) ... CD
Blue Note, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real stroke of genius from pianist Andrew Hill – and a surprising one too! After an initial legacy of groundbreaking experimental sides for Blue Note, Hill returns to his "grass roots" on this excellent session of straight ahead, fairly funky, soul jazz piano tunes! In the notes, Hill claims a desire to get back to the people – and in a really unusual turn, he shakes off his previous modernist trappings and goes for territory that's much more in the mode of Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, or Hank Mobley on Blue Note! Yet despite this turn, and amidst some more conventional arrangements, Andrew's work on piano is still quite dark and moody – filled with beautiful clashing lines and haunting off-beat changes that open up the session way more than you'd expect! Booker Ervin joins in on tenor – on what would become one of his last recordings – and the rest of the group includes Lee Morgan, Ron Carter, and Freddie Waits – all plenty darn hip players who really get the unusual balance of soul jazz and modernism that Hill's going for here! Tracks include "Mira", "Bayou Red", "Venture Inward", "Grass Roots", and "Soul Special". Plus, this CD also features 5 tracks from a previously unissued session that has Woody Shaw as the leader, with Hill on piano and Frank Mitchell on tenor. Idris Muhammad's the drummer on that one – and funky as you'd expect – and tracks include "MC", "Venture Inward (first version)", "Bayou Red (first version)", and "Love Nocturne". CD

✨✧ Jimmy Giuffre/Paul Bley/Steve SwallowEmphasis, Stuttgart 1961 ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful live counterpart to Jimmy Giuffre's crucial Verve recordings Fusion and Thesis – performed here with a similar trio that includes Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass – really expanding upon ideas of jazz expression that Giuffre first put forth in his late 50s trio! Although piano has been reintroduced to the trio via Bley, its use is almost completely freed from rhythm – so that the keyboard notes float equally in space with Giuffre's leanly creative lines on clarinet and Swallow's spacious use of bass. There's a fragile beauty here that's simply breathtaking – and although relatively free, the work has a sense of cohesion and unified spirit that's really wonderful. 8 tracks recorded live in Stuttgart, including "Whirrr", "Emphasis", "Sonic", "Venture", "Jesus Maria", "Stretching Out", "Carla" and "Cry, Want". Sublime guitar magic from The Ventures – the kind of record that showed why few other instrumental combos could match their action in the 60s! The set has a simple but bold sound that's really wonderful – sounds mostly from tightly strummed electric guitars and a bit of kicking drums – often applied to familiar tunes that are made over nicely through the group's trademark approach. Studio tricks further highlight the action, and the album also includes a few original instrumentals that almost come off sounding like the best in the bunch! In many cases, groups with the chops of The Ventures would sound overly-mannered when cutting a surf record, but not The Ventures! They play with the energy and youthful abandon necessary to set the tone. Speaking of tone, the overall sound is as fantastic as usual here. Killer! Captain SkyAdventures Of Captain Sky ... LP
AVI, 1978. Very Good ... $13.99
A legendary funk set from late 70s Chicago – served up by our own Captain Sky, aka Daryl Cameron – an imposing figure who often worked in the same space-themed territory as the P-Funk empire in the mid 70s! The difference here, though, is that Cameron wrote, produced, and put the whole thing together himself – with help from a few friends in the studio – making the album a great homegrown attempt to rival the strength of the bigger funk ensembles of the period – something The Captain and crew do pretty darn well throughout! There's lots of heavy bass on the set – a strong precursor of modes to come – mixed with riffing guitar, sweet keyboards, and plenty of tight rhythms – on cuts that include the famous sample cut "Super Sporm" – a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound – plus "Now That I Have You", "Saturday Night Move-Ease", "Wonder Worm" and "Can't Stop Now". Solar/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 30.99
Four classic albums from Dynasty – served up here with bonus material too! First up is Your Piece Of The Rock – a set that has Dynasty working with snapping grooves with a nice sort of electro undercurrent –- all the handiwork of Leon Sylvers, who also plays bass and drums on the record – and really helps Dynasty find their groove! The tracks here are all quite long, and offer up plenty of space for the players to jam nicely – a group that includes Fred Jackson on saxophone, Gene Dozier on keyboards, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet. Dynasty are pretty good too – a bit more than just a club trio filling in vocals from time to time – and titles include "Satisfied", "Your Piece Of The Rock", "I Don't Want To Be A Freak", "When You Feel Like Giving Love", and "It's Still A Thrill". Next is Adventures In Music – almost a fusion of older sweet group soul with some of the more bottom-driven modes forged by the Solar label! The keyboards are upfront, the basslines strong, and the group is completely tight on the money – at a level that made them one of the strongest 80s proponents of the Solar Records groove. The title cut here is our favorite – a sweet stepper that bursts out with this blast of sound that's totally great – completely captivating, and filled with cascading sounds that really grab us. Other tracks include "Ice Breaker", "Something To Remember", "Day & Night", "Do Me Right", and "I've Just Begun To Love You". Next is Second Adventure – the kind of set that shows why the group went on to become one of the strongest things going in the second chapter of the Solar Records soul empire from LA! The album begins with a rock-solid punch, then continues strongly throughout – basslines, guitar riffs, and funky drums all right on the money – used in a way that's somehow fresher than most of the larger funk groups of the time – and with a nice balance between mellower moments that still seem to have a gentle kind of groove. The energy is wonderful throughout – and titles include "Give It Up For Love", "Love In The Fast Lane", "Revenge", "Here I Am", "A Man In Love", and "You're My Angel". Last up is Right Back At Cha – a set that's super tight and right on the money – that wonderfully catchy approach to 80s R&B that was the hallmark of Dynasty at their height! The tunes are a hook-heavy blend of funk and upbeat modes – all brightly glowing with that style that made Solar Records one of the leading lights of the Cali soul scene in the decade – and which gets some extra special treatment here from one of their most consistent groups! Titles include "That's The Way I Feel About You", "Check It Out, "The Only One", "Questions", "Straight Out", and "Does That Ring A Bell". 3CD set also features 9 bonus tracks – all 7" single mixes of hits from the albums! Peter GuralnickLooking To Get Lost – Adventures In Music & Writing (hardcover) ... Book
Little Brown, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 30.00
Peter Guralnick has written some mighty big, career-defining books on key figures in music – but from the start, we've always loved his shorter pieces the best – the kind of work we first fell in love with in books like Sweet Soul Music and Lost Highway! And if you dig his shorter pieces, there's plenty of those here – really wonderful essays on artists in a variety of genres – penned by one of the few figures who can balance an understanding of their music with a mixture of historical detail and unabashed fandom! Guralnick's writing has gotten better and better over the years – and it's great to have it focused back on his roots – in chapters that focus on artists who include Solomon Burke, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, Howlin Wolf, Tammy Wynette, and even the great country trucker Dick Curless! A really fantastic record, and one that's very different than you might expect from a record with "improvised" in the title! There's certainly improvisation on the record, but in a standard jazz way – the set's not free jazz, but a wonderful batch of modern jazz ideas, with a crackle that reminds us of the hippest UK sets of the mid 60s, some of the groundbreaking Chicago work of the late 50s, and maybe even the way that Charles Mingus could allow free play within a group that was also moving forward strongly together! The lineup features Knimes on drums, Jose Cervera on alto and flute, Yiannis Marinos on trombone, and Ignacio Santoro on bass – a piano-less quartet that does a fantastic job with the leader's original compositions. Never-issued work from one of our favorite Polish jazz musicians of the 60s – vibist Jerzy Milian, an artist whose modern sounds were almost as much an important part of the scene as the piano of Krzystof Komeda! Here, Milian works in two different small groups – one a quartet with the great Wojciech Karolak on piano, the other a trio, but with occasional contributions from Jan Ptaszy Wroblewski on tenor – both groups here in unreleased material that was originally recorded for radio. Some of the tracks are nice and long, and throughout, Milian's got that sharply chromatic approach that makes his work on vibes so wonderful – a bold, rich attack that's got a great sense of resonance. Titles include "Mr Croque", "Ballad For Ghent", "Iskry", "Szkice Nsa Trio", "Sympatie I Antypatie", and "Cztery Kapelusze". CD

King/We Want Sounds (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 34.99
There's a vampire with a flute on the cover – and that image alone is more than enough to make us drop the needle on this rare Japanese gem from the 70s! And fortunately, the sound of the music is equally cool – funky fusion with some nicely spacey currents – almost a Mizell Brothers vibe at points, in the way elements can swirl around in the mix, and attain this wonderfully full power without ever sounding too commercial at all! There's definitely some of that flute on the record, but the keyboards are maybe even cooler – as is all the electric instrumentation, which comes together in a sublime way! Titles include "Gokumontou", "Kamen Butokai", "Yasuhakamura", "Kindaichi Kosuke No Theme", "Mitsukubitou", and "Meirosou No Sangeki". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $49.99
If you've ever doubted that Vincent Price was a creepy guy, you've gotta hear this album! The double-length set is a mad exploration into the world of the supernatural – and is done with a vibe that's even creepier than some of Price's famous appearances in horror films – with lots of weird electronics from Douglas Leedy, whose effects are almost worth the price of admission alone! Price recites material penned by Terry D'Oberoff – in a dark, spooky tone, set in a really echoey space – which really makes us believe that he knows all about the topics he talks about – material that includes "Witch Tortures", "How To Communicate With The Spirits", "The Magic Bloodstone", "Instruments Of Magic", "Witch Burning", and "How To Make A Pact With The Devil". Stones Throw/Vinyl Me Please, 2005. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 39.99
Lord Quas returns for another batch of booming, mad-blunted hip hop – an even more sprawling, surreal ride than the Unseen LP! Quasimoto was and still is Madlib's outlet for his most cartoonishly blunted, eccentric tendencies – and he really lets 'em fly on this set! The Unseen LP had more strains of the smoky jazz vibe of 'Lib's more mature productions – buried underneath the wacky funk and Quas/'Lib's instantly identifiable, hilarious mouthbreather rhymes. This one keeps it surreal throughout – sort of a cross between Madvillain, Prince Paul and a Max Fleischer cartoon – with Melvin Van Peebles dropping in here and there! Tracks include "Bullysh*t", "Greenery", "Crime", "Hydrant Game", "Don't Blank", "Bus Ride", "Bartender Say", "The Exclusive" feat MED, "Closer" feat Madvillain, "Strange Piano", "Life Is. . .", "Tomorrow Never Knows" and more. Minnie RipertonAdventures In Paradise ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
Maybe our favorite-ever album from Minnie Riperton during the 70s – a sweet, smooth jazzy gem that really makes some of the best use of her vocals! There's a sophistication here that's a great 70s counterpart to Minnie's earlier work with Charles Stepney – served up here in a very different style, but one that really sets Riperton apart from any of her contemporaries – in a unique blend of soul, jazz, and much deeper spirits – all handled with the sense of pride and style you'd expect from Minnie's image on the cover! All tracks were co-written by Riperton and Richard Rudolph – and a few get some great help from Leon Ware too. Titles include the massive track "Baby, This Love I Have" – a slow funk number that's be sampled many times over the years – plus the spacey tunes "Minnie's Lament", "Inside My Love", and "Alone In Brewster Bay", remade from Minnie's first LP – and the titles "Simple Things", "Feeling That Your Feeling's Right", and "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down". A fantastic bit of boogie – a contemporary set, but one that it feels like it was lifted from the best of the early 80s underground – from the post-disco, funky club rhythms – right through to the soulful vocals and warm keyboards in the mix! The tunes have a sound that's sophisticated, but very organic too – that best sort of funky flow that you'll remember from the moment when the bigger discos were closing their doors, and club music went back underground and got stripped down to its finest elements! Rob Hardt provides the great keyboards on the record – and vocals are by a variety of singers – including Seest, Flemming Fanoe, Kiki Kyte, Folami, Kenny Thomas, and Sulene Fleming – on titles that include "Keep The Faith", "Busy Dreamin", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Lift Your Head Up", "Private Eye", "Soho House", and "Something's Got Me Walking On Air". The tunes are positive and upbeat as their titles might imply – and the record's a great one if you go for an Incognito-styled groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Cherry Red (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 39.99
Key club cuts from the second generation of the industrial scene – that 80s moment when the music moved from the noisy, experimental territory of the Throbbing Gristle underground to a more mainstream world where the previous sonic breakthroughs were mixed with beats and lyrics to create some surprisingly danceable tracks! Here in Chicago, we had Wax Trax to thank us for introducing us to lots of this music – but on the other side of the Atlantic, some of these groups were getting plenty of play both on radio and in nite spots – using darker beats and basslines to surprisingly great effect. The package is maybe worth it alone for "Yon Yonson" by the Dave Howard Singers – a cut we thought nobody in the world remembered – and the 3CD package features 44 titles in all, with work from Attrition, Meat Beat Manifesto, A:Grumh, Lead Into Gold, Nocturnal Emissions, Test Dept, SPK, Front 242, Renegade Soundwave, Severed Heads, Age Of Chance, Laibach, Neon Judgement, The Weathermen, Section 25, Die Krupps, MAD, Legendary Pink Dots, Son Of Sam, Esplendor Geometrico, Hunting Lodge, Borghesia, Alein Sex Fiend, and others! Liberty, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great material from the second chapter of Del Shannon – a time when the previous pop legend opened up to trippier modes – which makes for a really great blend on this gem of an album from 1968! Even at his pop best, there was always a genuine strain of soul-searching sadness in his voice that underscored the material, going all the way back to "Runaway" and on some of the better, if lesser-remembered work after that immortal hit. He manages to carry that trait strongly into the psych era here, with a lot of lusher baroque pop elements, and some great instrumentation – all orchestrated by Don Peake. Includes "Thinking It Over", "Be My Friend", "Silver Birch", "Rover Cool", "Colour Flashing Hair", "Gemini", "Runnin' On Back", "Conquer", "Been So Long", "Magical Musical Box", and "New Orleans (Mardi Gras)". Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The end of the 80s saw a huge new shift in music on the UK scene – a moment when indie rock and club music collided – and guitar-based work was back on the dancefloors in a really big way! Part of the shift came from years of UK interest in house, electro, and other American styles – which were often spun alongside post-punk and indie material in the same clubs (maybe most famously at the Hacienda in Manchester) – leading to a surprising blend of styles that breathed a lot of new life into the world of rock music as well! This set captures cuts from the key years of this moment – the post-1988 summer of love period through years when dance might take over more completely – a much-loved moment, filled with well-remembered cuts – presented here in a big box set that features many rare mixes from 12" singles as well. The box brings together 57 tracks in all, all with detailed notes on the music – and includes work from Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, 808 State, Inspiral Carpets, Future Sound Of London, Electronic, Candy Flip, Telescopes, Hollow Men, Spacemen 3, Spin, World Of Twist, Mock Turtles, Northside, The Moonflowers, Charlatans, Shamen, Blow Up, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, The Dylans, Saint Etienne, and others! 577, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and reeds of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – and this second volume features titles that include "Wordwide", "Mask Production", "Da Rest Is Story", and "Blinking Down". MPS (Germany), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent CD that brings together 2 different albums by the incredible Clarke Boland Big Band – Fellini 712 and Latin Kaleidoscope. The Latin Kaleidoscope LP is one of our greatest sellers on vinyl (when we can find it!), and it's an insane batch of Latin-tinged tracks divided up into two suites – one written by Gary McFarland and one written by Francy Boland. The band wails hard and fast, and in hot Afro-Cuban grooves, with plenty of room for solos by Benny Bailey, Tony Coe, Johnny Griffin, Sahib Shihab, and Derek Humble. The tracks are some of the best stuff the band ever did, and along with the extended suite that comprises Fellini 712, the CD is a masterpiece of hard large band tracks, and a brilliant introduction to the work of the CBBB (and heck, even if you do know them, the material's still pretty tough to find anyway!) 14 tracks in all – including "Olhos Negros", "Ramo De Flores", "Feibre Cubana", "Extrano Sueno", "Cara Bruja", and "Un Grao De Ariea". A great second adventure from Dynasty – the kind of set that shows why the group went on to become one of the strongest things going in the second chapter of the Solar Records soul empire from LA! CD

✨✧ Chico HamiltonEl Chico/Further Adventures Of El Chico ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds throughout – 2 killers from Chico Hamilton! El Chico is light years ahead of the staid sounds that Chico Hamilton was cutting in the 50s! Hamilton's one of those players who has an amazing range to his music – almost all of it really incredible, as Chico always shifts things up over time – continually trying new things, and new modes of expression – even though, given his popularity, he could have just kept recording the same things year after year. This album is true testament to that propensity for growth in Hamilton's music – a wonderfully unbridled set that's filled with unusual rhythms, odd instrumentation, and even some of the first touches of psychedelic jazz to appear in the 60s! Players include Sadao Watanabe on alto and flute, Gabor Szabo on guitar, Jimmy Cheatham on trombone, and Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja on percussion – all working together in a really wonderful range of modes from track to track – always groovy, but also pretty far-reaching and exploratory too! Titles include "El Moors", "Helena", "Strange", "Marcheta", "El Chico", and "Conquistadores". Further Adventures is massively groovy work from Chico Hamilton – one of his standout swingers for Impulse Records in the 60s, and a set that really showcases all the changes in music he'd made for the decade! The set features some wonderful reed work from Jerome Richardson and Charlie Mariano, plus some especially great guitar from Gabor Szabo – a player who was rising to fame in Hamilton's group, but also stands out here with lots of the breezy grooves he'd bring to his own dates for Impulse. Tracks are short, but in a good way that really keeps them focused – and other players who complete the groove include Clark Terry on trumpet and Ron Carter on bass – both of whom nicely pick up Chico's sense of adventure and humor. Titles include "Monday Monday", "Daydream", "Stella By Starlight", "Evil Eye", "Manila", "That Boy With The Long Hair", and "Monday Monday". CD

It's been over 2 decades since Bluey first recorded under the Incognito name, but that doesn't mean that he's been sitting on his laurels at all – because this gem of an album has him sounding better than even on some of his classics from years back! The groove is sweetly soulful, with a jazzy undercurrent that hearkens back to the best west coast soul of the 70s – and Bluey's got the group honed to perfection, playing with a razor-sharp edge that keeps the tunes as funky as they are soulful! Vocals are by Maysa and Tony Momrelle – and tracks include "Don't Turn My Love Away", "This Thing Called Love", "The Principles Of Love", "Everything Your Heart Desires", "Close My Eyes", "25th Chapter", and "Mr Jones". A gem of a record from Clifford Jordan – proof that the 70s were possibly the greatest decade for his music! Although most of Jordan's contemporaries from the big tenor days of the 50s really didn't grow much during the 70s, Clifford always continued to develop his style – adding in modes and tones that he'd never played before, working in an ever rich tapestry of jazz that makes just about any of his albums from the time a delight. Even this session – a simple quartet date recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Bill Lee, and Grady Tate – offers lots of wonderful moments, and is kind of a post-righteous 70s soul jazz album, filled with lots of warm tones and straight soulful playing that are almost a back to earth moment after his Strata East years – but still equally expressive. Titles include "He's A Hero", "No More", "Quasimodo", and "Adventurer". CD

Stan reprises his famous modernist swing in a great little album that's one of his best works from the early 60s. The tracks are longish, with the mixture of dark shading and breakout solos that grace some of his best early work – and although the players in the group aren't the famous west coasters that Stan first brought to fame, they all do a fine job when the solo moment comes. Titles include "Waltz Of The Prophets", "Turtle Talk", "Malaguena", and "Body & Soul". CD features the bonus tracks "Body & Soul (first version)" and "Waltz Of The Prophets (first version)". CD

Fairly commercial, but still irresistible house from one of the pioneers, Lil Louis, or at least a producer who helped really shine the light on the club scene. Masters At Work provide more than just a bit of underground credibility here, with their nice mixes. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Hermeto PascoalBrazilian Adventure (aka Hermeto – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Muse, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
The amazing first album from Brazilian modern musical genius Hermeto Pascoal - a set that would change the world of jazz and Brazilian music for years to come! By the time of the set, Hermeto was no stranger to the scene - he'd recorded famously in Quarteto Novo with Airto, and in some other key groups - yet this set also marks a real transformation, the rise of Pascoal as a new visionary, with endless fresh ideas for sounds, rhythms, and instrumental possibilities! And yet, the album's still very groovy - it follows nicely off the spirit of Quarteto Novo, and mixes tight rhythmic changes with all sorts of incredible instrumental inflections - work by Pascoal on keyboards and flute - augmented with drums and percussion from Airto, and a range of reeds from American jazz musicians Jerome Richardson, Maurico Smith, Joe Farrell, Jerry Dodgion, and Hubert Laws - as well as trombone from the great Garnett Brown, and trumpets from Thad Jones and Joe Newman. The mix of American players and Brazilian inspiration is wonderful - and Airto and Flora Purim produced the set - and the latter sings a bit on the record. Titles include "As Marianas", "Alicate", "Hermeto", "Coalhada", "Fabiola", "Guizos", and "Flor Do Amor". This CD also contains 3 tracks from Dom Salvador's great album Minha Familia, also recorded for Muse, and with a nice breezy Brazilian jazz feel. CD

✨✧ Minnie RipertonAdventures In Paradise ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Nile RodgersAdventures In The Land Of Good Groove (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Mirage/FTG, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nile Rodgers is working here away from Chic – but his sound here is definitely in that classic lean, mean mode – lots of compressed guitar bits riffing over the rhythms, every bit as catchy and captivating as ever! The grooves break out nicely from the standard Chic mode – almost as if Nile is set free to explore new territory on his own – and although the lyrics on the set aren't the greatest you might find in soul music from the time, they're more than made up for by the album's catchy beats and guitar! Titles include "Beet", "Get Her Crazy", "Yum Yum", "Rock Bottom", and "Most Down". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – extended mixes of "Yum Yum" and "The Land Of The Good Groove". CD

Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Pete Rugolo's greatest albums – and some of his most groundbreaking work away from Stan Kenton! The album features Rugolo arranging for a tight group of west coast reed players – including Bud Shank, Dave Pell, and Bob Cooper – and the tracks are angular, complicated, and dosed with that right mixture of modernism and swing that made Kenton's best work from the early 50s so great. Titles include "Theme For Alto", "Igor Beaver", "Impressionism", "Our Waltz", "Polytonal Blues", and "Collaboration". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Robert SavageAdventures Of Robert Savage Volume 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Paramount/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
There never was a second volume of work from Robert Savage – but maybe that's because he has enough musical adventures on this set to last him a lifetime! Savage is better known as Bobby Arlin, who started out with The Leaves – and his guitar here is far more searing than his work on the LA scene of the late 60s – certainly informed by the rise of British hard rock at the time, but with a boldness that's all its own! The odd cover is hardly a hint at what's inside – as Bobby works with a lean trio of just bass and drums, and none of the trappings that prog-like image might make you expect – qualities that are underscored with some occasional rootsy inflections, and a nice sort of attitude in the vocals. Titles include "Seven Days Drunk", "Don't Run & Hide", "Beaver Baby", "Milk Run", "Save Us From The Cyclops", and "Road Apples". CD

✨✧ Del ShannonFurther Adventures Of Charles Westover (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD features 8 more bonus tracks – including "She", "In My Arms Again", "Early In The Morning", "What's A Matter Baby", "You Don't Love Me", "Stand Up", and "The House Where Nobody Lives". CD

Epic/FTG, 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
Late 80s boogie funk from Cameo guitarist and keyboardist Charlie Singleton & Modern Man, though Charlie himself may very well be this Modern Man, as he also wrote and produced the record – with allstar assistance from his Cameo partners, Peabo Bryson and others! Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained is his first for Epic, in a similar pop funk mode as Cameo's work of the time, though a bit leane and with Charlie's personal touches right out front. Thumping programming, some electro touches and some some blazing guitar by Charlie when the mood strikes! Includes "I Wanna Be With You", and 80s groove cover of "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", "Spending Money", "Over My Head" with Peabo and a nice bit of sax, "Love Machine", "Vain", "Almost Over You" and more. Slick Rick's first solo LP – a hip hop classic, and essential to everyone's collection! MC Ricky D introduced the world to a whole new rap style on Doug E Fresh's "The Show" and by the time this album dropped the world was more than ready for a full LP of his unique flow. The master of storytelling rap delivers the goods on each and every track here, which is more than can be said for most hip hop LPs. We never tire of timeless tracks like "Treat Her Like A Prostitute", "Children's Story", "The Ruler's Back", "Mona Lisa", and "Teenage Love". CD

✨✧ Jimmy Smith & Wes MontgomeryFurther Adventures of Jimmy & Wes ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second great session from two of Verve's biggest jazz stars of the 60s – organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery – an unlikely pair, to be sure, but one who work great together on the set! The real change here is in Wes' playing – as it's shifted from the mellower style used over larger backings on most of his Verve sets, back to the rootsier soul jazz tone of his earliest recordings from his days on the Indianapolis scene. Jimmy and Wes are working with a core combo that includes Grady Tate on drums and Ray Barretto on conga – making for a lean organ/guitar groove that's only got percussion to kick it along. Titles include "Call Me", "OGD", "King Of The Road", "Mellow Mood", and "Maybe September" – plus a great version of "Milestones" that features some hard swinging larger backings from Oliver Nelson! An amazing collection of experimental sounds from the European scene of the postwar years – key electronic and musique concrete recordings from some of the most important composers of the 20th Century! The package is a great introduction to this important stretch in music – and features recordings that are every bit as mindblowing now as they were over 50 years ago – really revolutionary sounds and tones that went onto have an undeniable impact on modern music, yet which still sound even more amazing here in the original source recordings. Includes "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "Voile D'Orphee" by Pierre Henre, "Diamorphoses" and "Concret PH" by Iannis Xenakis, "Studie Nr 1" and "Gesang Der Junglinge" by Karlheinz Stockhausen, and "Cinq Etudes De Bruits" by Pierre Schaeffer. The fantastic second album from Television – a follow up to Marquee Moon that has the group still very much at the top of their game – and which makes a perfect pairing with that legendary debut! The group may not have given us many records over their short span – but Adventure is the kind of record that most groups would have worked years to create – graced with fantastic work from Tom Verlaine, and the kind of guitar sound that opened the door for a whole new generation to explore in the years beyond punk and prog! Titles include "Glory Days", "Foxhole", "Careful", "Carried Away", "The Fire", "Ain't That Nothin", and "The Dream's Dream". CD

✨✧ Lenny WhiteLenny White Presents The Adventures of The Astral Pirates – A Musical Space Odyssey ... LP
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Space seemed to be a logical direction for Lenny White to go – since his high-powered fusion drumming style is enough to power him right out of the galaxy! This album's a hard heavy batch of funky fusion tunes – with lots of hard drums by Lenny, and spacey spacey keyboards by the great Don Blackman! Patrick Gleeson had a hand in some of the synthesizer work, and he gives the album a similar astral sound to the work he did on the Mercury label at the same time. There's a lot of guitars in the lead, but they sound pretty nice next to Lenny's heavy drums – and titles include "Heavy Metal Monster", "Assault", "Climax", "Universal Love", "The Great Pyramid", and "Remembering". ✨✧ Daniel Carter/Matthew Shipp/William Parker/Gerald CleaverWelcome Adventure Vol 2 ... CD
✨✧ DJ ShadowAction Adventure ... CD
Mass Appeal, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set that's almost a back to basics effort for DJ Shadow, yet one that's also a strong step forward too – basic in that it's a record that's almost all instrumental, with no guests at all – but forward because it's got a leaner groove, and a style that shows just how far Shadow has moved past the more hip hop/turntablist style of his roots! There's almost a cinematic vibe to the music at times – a mode that fits the action adventure of the title, with plenty of cuts that would be right at home on classic soundtracks, especially of the 80s crime/cop/action style – served up with just the right sorts of beats, basslines, and keyboards to echo that era! Titles include "A Narrow Escape", "You Played Me", "Time & Space", "Forever Changed", "She's Evolving", "Reflecting Pool", "Free For All", "Ozone Scraper", and "Witches Vs Warlocks". CD
