✨✧ Velvet UndergroundWhite Light/White Heat ... CD
MGM/Verve, 1968. Used ... $3.99
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! CD

✨✧ Velvet UndergroundVelvet Underground & Nico ... CD
MGM/Polydor, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". Gene AmmonsVelvet Soul ... LP
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Classic mellow Jug – from a time when Prestige discovered that Gene Ammons would sell equally well to the mellow jazz crowd as to the jukebox jumpers. Most of the cuts feature Gene with a deep soulful tone that could qualify as "velvet", but which still has enough of a rough edge to remain soulful. One track is played by a larger group, and the rest are with small combos that either feature organ or piano. Tracks include "Salome's Tune", "Velvet Soul", "Stranger In Town", and "Light N Up". A live trio date from guitarist Lenny Breau – and a set that's maybe got a bit more of an edge than some of his studio albums of the time! Lenny introduces the set, which helps enforce the concert feel of the proceedings – then works through a set of nicely varied material that really opens up with his solos – sometimes very careful single-note lines, sometimes more complicated flurries that show references towards other styles, as a reminder that Breau was never just a straight jazz guitarist. Titles include the beautiful "Indian Reflections For Ravi" – plus "Bluesette", "Spanjazz", "Mercy Mercy Mercy", "That's All", "Blues Theme #2", and "The Claw". LP, Vinyl record album

A great set from AACM legend – tenorist Fred Anderson – cut in the very familiar home territory of his Velvet Lounge in Chicago! Anderson had been tending bar and leading jam sessions at the tavern since his return from Europe in the early 80s – but ended up purchasing the venue towards the end of the next decade – and quickly turned it into one of the real hotspots for the rising Chicago avant garde! This classic live set features Anderson caught in his home turf, in the company of bassist Peter Kowald and drummer Hamid Drake – prime example of the kind of local/international crossover sets that were really shaking the Chicago scene in the 90s. The set features 3 long tracks – "Straight, But Not Straight", "To Those Who Know", and "Multidimensional Reality". CD

Janet Jackson's not straying too far from the past, but she's also really emerging here as an artist with more strength and maturity than anyone might have guessed in the decade before! Janet's still recording with help from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, but both they and she have really found a way to reach out and embrace all the best changes in R&B that have happened during the 90s – and used them to make sure that nobody's going to mistake Jackson for just Michael's sister who got lucky with a few hits! There's plenty of great surprises, interludes, and guest stars – all of which make the longer space of the record really hold up – and titles include "Got Til It's Gone", "Velvet Rope", "Empty", "What About", "Can't Be Stopped", "I Get Lonely", "Rope Burn", "Together Again", "Free Xone", "Go Deep", and "My Need". ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeFour Files On Grey Velvet/4 Mosche Di Velluto Grigio (clear vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Death Waltz (UK), 1971. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastically dark Morricone score! Morricone originally wrote this material for the film Quattro Mosche Di Velluto Grigio, the third part of Dario Argento's cult terror trilogy – and until the reissue market years later, only 2 of the tracks ever made it to the public, on a rare single issued by Cinevox in 1971. The leadoff track – "4 Mosche Di Vellutto Grigio (titoli)" – is actually a bit funky, with some very heavy drums and cascading fuzzy guitar riffs that sound very nice. Then, the record moves into spookier material – like the cut "Come Un Madrigale", and a number of self-titled themes – all of which feature strange harpsichord work, dark orchestral passages, and some very spooky production work! Fortunately, the score ends on an upbeat note – a hard driving, beat group sounding version of the main theme that's a nice cap to the whole package. This reissue includes new mastering from the Cinevox archives – and 19 never heard rarities. LP, Vinyl record album
(A very cool package – with new artwork, bonus tracks, and 3 sides of music, and 1 more etched side!)

This album's a bit more laidback than some of Levy's other sets for Groove Merchant – with larger arrangements that feature Charles Covington on electric piano and organ, Fats Theus on tenor and flute, and Billy Skinner on trumpet – but the approach actually works well, as the slow-moving tracks trip out over a lot of space, giving O'Donel plenty of room to craft his uniquely spacious and chromatic solos. Titles include versions of "Watch What Happens", "Love Story", "Call Me", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", plus the originals "Granny" and "Nature's Child", both of which have a nice little groove! The first album from Bedhead – a 1994 record that helped usher in something of a quiet revolution in 90s indie rock – paving the way for lusher, moodier and slower soundscapes, soon be dubbed slowcore! Bedhead is as much a breath of fresh air a couple decades later, delivering a timeless, moody sound that takes some cues from the vibe of the Velvet Underground at their mellowest, and more recent trailblazers like Spaceman 3 – but ultimately deliver their own distinctive, and now oft-imitated sound. Nick Cave & The Bad SeedsKicking Against The Pricks ... CD
Mute (UK), 1986. Used ... $5.99
One of the essential Nick Cave albums from his creatively fertile mid 80s years – an all covers collection that finds Nick dredging the soil for some old bones to bring back – Bad Seeds style. Kicking Against The Pricks doesn't so much as advertise itself as a covers record, nor should it – it's purely a Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds record – making songs recorded earlier by Gene Pitney, Jimmy Webb, Roy Orbison, the Velvet Underground, Leadbelly, Johnny Cash and others into gritty, tension fraught gems that hold up as well as anything in Cave's canon, from the fierce early stuff with the Birthday Party to his truly poetic lit rock bits of genius in the late 00s. A classic! Titles include "Muddy Water", "I'm Gonna Kill That Woman", "Long Black Veil", "Hey Joe", "Black Betty", "All Tomorrows Parties", "The Hammer Song", "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", "The Carnival Is Over" and more. Super Fuji Discs (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
A pretty wild set of experimental work from mid 70s Japan – as you might guess from the name of the group! The lineup actually features a young Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano, but his work on that instrument is often overshadowed by the electronics and keyboards, and heavy guitar at some points – soaring out out with plenty of fierce fuzz and distortion when needed! Yet there's also a lot more going on here than just guitar and keyboards – as the tracks are all quite long, and go through lots of offbeat trippy changes that might be right at home with the Velvet Underground generation – not in a similar sound, but definitely in a similar spirit. All three long tracks are in Japanese – and the album's definitely a wild blend of psych, electronics, and other experimental modes. CD

✨✧ LA ExpressLA Express/Shadow Play ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A pair of jazz funk classics from this group who got their start with reedman Tom Scott! First up is the self-titled LA Express – funky fusion with a bit of a studio feel – played by the LA Express, a combo best known for their work with Tom Scott – stepping out here strongly on their own! Even without Scott's sax in the lead, the sound here is still pretty darn sharp – and the lineup features Robben Ford on guitars, Victor Feldman on keyboards, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums and percussion – plus saxophones from David Luell, who kind of steps in where Scott left off! There's some nice jamming that's on the tighter side of the CTI sound – with lots of choppy sax lines from Luell over sweet electric rhythms – and titles include "The Shrug", "Stairs", "Cry Of The Jungle", "It's Happening Right Now", "Western Horizon", and "Down The Middle". Shadow Play is proof that the group could stand strongly on their own away from former leader Tom Scott! This time around, the sound is a bit more built-up than before – put together with a slight dose of soul in the mix, which really warms things up from the sharper sound of their debut! The album features vocals on 3 numbers – wonderful wordless scatting from Joni Mitchell on the track "Nordic Winds" – which almost comes across like a rare Euro fusion cut from the time – and straighter soulful singing from Paulette McWilliams on the tunes "Double Your Pleasure" and "Dance The Night Away". Players include Victor Feldman on keyboards and percussion, David Luell on saxes, Peter Maunu on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums – and other titles include "Shadow Play", "Chariot Race", "Velvet Lady", "Mad Drums & Englishman", and "Vortex". ✨✧ MedusaFirst Step Beyond ... LP
Numero, 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99
One of the darkest records to ever come out of the Chicago scene of the 70s – an unreleased gem from Medusa – a group who really know how to go head to head with some of the most frenetic acts of their generation! The set's got a blistering array of guitars right up front in the mix – brilliant solos that are very much in the metal mode, yet without all the posturing that usually comes along with such dexterity – a style that's often more content to hide behind the larger, darker trappings of the entire group! There's plenty of cuts on the set that would have set late night FM radio on fire at the time – plus a few more than would definitely have been too dangerous for the airwaves too – and Numero's done a wonderful job of resurrecting this lost nugget – giving it a lavish velvet-covered jacket, with the kind of presentation that no big record labels would have paid for at the time! Titles include "Strangulation", "Temptress", "Feelings Of Indifference", "Black Wizard", "Frustration's Fool", and "Unknown Fear". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Os MutantesOs Mutantes (1968) ... LP
Polydor (Brazil), 1968. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. Probably the most hyped hip hop album by rock critics of the last decade – but don't hold that against Stankonia, because these ghetto grooves from planet P-Funk were exactly what world needed in 2000! The millenium blowout party jam feel throughout is surely a nice change of pace from all the doom and gloom out there, but they still manage to spit out enough reality to keep things feeling true – particularly in the playful battle of the sexes showdowns. Both of the rare original albums by this legendary 60s electronic group – out now on one lovely 18 track CD! The Apples were one of the most unique groups of their era, and they mixed electronics with a throbbing rock groove in a way that not only predicted lots of the musical trends of the 70's, but which has also been taken up again in the 90's by a host of young bands. The group has reformed these days, but these two albums are still their best. Mel TormeBethlehem Years ... CD
Bethlehem/Shout Factory, Late 50s. Used ... $4.99
Excellent work from Mel Torme – material recorded in the late 50s for Bethlehem Records – easily one of our favorite periods in the career of the Velvet Fog! The tunes here are tremendous – numbers that are tightly jazzy, often with hip west coast backing from arranger Marty Paich – who really knows how to balance together swinging rhythms and warmer tones that perfectly suit Torme's unique vocal style. In fact, if we dare say it, as great as Mel is in other settings, he'd also probably admit that the Bethlehem sides were the high point of his recorded career – material he'd reference often in later years. CD features 16 tracks in all – including "Lullaby Of Birdland", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Lulu's Back In Town", "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "It's All Right With Me", "Poor Little Extra Girl", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "Fascinating Rhythm", and "Just One Of Those Things". The result is a swinging batch of standards that lets Mel shine at his best – including titles like "I've Got The World On A String", "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", and "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart". Planet E, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A heavy helping of Detroit Love – and one that will also make you love Detroit too – or, at least, completely respect the city for having such a continually rewarding underground over the last few decades – long after the possibility of chart hits or bigger fame have passed! Detroit's electronic scene first got notice at the end of the 80s – when its own grooves were rising to rival the house music coming from Chicago – and while that moment sparked some big international fame, the decades have continued to see the city working to improve, refine, and mature their initial impulses – with the sorts of fantastic sounds that you'll hear in this set! Not all the music is new, but most of it is – and the set combines some wonderfully fresh tracks from the Carl Craig side of the universe – both his own music, and work by key contemporaries too – with titles that include "It Is What It Is" by Rhythim Is Rhythim, "Rosalie" by Green Velvet & Carl Craig, "Do It All Night (C2 edit)" by DJ Minx, "Credit Card (Gay Marvine rmx)" by BMG & Sal P, "Satori" by Ectomorph, "Formulaic Mode" by Mirko Loko & Stacey Pullen, "My Love Check" by Claude Vonstroke, and "Alleys Of Your Mind" by The Dirtbombs. Ace (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
A wonderful tribute to the songwriting genius of Leonard Cohen – one that begins with some of his key contemporaries taking on his important songs – then stretches out over the space of decades, to show just how important Cohen's material has been to more contemporary performers! In fact, given that Leonard never really cracked the charts during his early run for Columbia Records, he's actually maybe been one of those artists who are more "musicians' musicians", or "singers' singers" – because his talents have been a huge inspiration to so many other creators – a bit like the statement once made about the Velvet Underground, that they never sold many records – but every one of those records seemed to find a place in the hands of people who were then inspired by them. The package features the usual great Ace Records attention to detail, which includes copious notes on the material, and lots of the history behind the songs – for titles that include "Tower Of Song" by Marianne Faithfull, "Sisters Of Mercy" by Dion, "Lover Lover Lover" by David Blue, "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" by Judy Collins, "Everybody Knows" by Barb Jungr, "Heart With No Companion" by Ron Sexsmith, "True Love Leaves No Traces" by Tom Northcott, "First We Take Manhattan" by Joe Cocker, "Avalanche" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, "Chelsea Hotel No 2" by Rufus Wainwright, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Marissa Nadler, "Suzanne" by Nina Simone, "Come Spend The Morning" by Lee Hazlewood, and "God Is Alive Magic Is Afoot" by Buffy Sainte Marie. Mellow soul heaven – and one of the greatest compilations of this style we've ever heard! A haunting batch of commercial music from the 70s – billed in the notes to Bosworth Ensembles, which makes us almost think that the work's from the Bosworth Sound Library – even though the record was issued in the US by Folkways! Composers are listed as T Kinsey, J Pearson, V Flick, B Ebbinghouse, and K Palmer – all names that might be Brit Easy composers – and titles include "Guitarama", "Walking On Velvet", "Theme For Two Lovers", "Pastorella", "Fleeting Clouds", "Devil's Delight", "Apollo 15", and "Slow Glow". Bradley's Barn is a crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first solo album from John Cale – and a record that's about as different a statement as he could have made from his previous work in the Velvet Underground! There's an approach here in both the songwriting and instrumentation that's instantly Cale-like – sounds that have a knowledge of all the newer ideas that have been brewing up in the underground throughout the 60s – both in rock and more "serious" forms of art music – yet a way of putting over the tunes with undeniable charm, and which have Cale rising to the forefront as a surprisingly strong lead. A few steps further, and John might well have been a compelling crossover pop singer with a record like this – yet it's also his way of holding back that really makes things interesting – especially given all the different directions his career would take in the next few years – all hinted at here, but hidden in some surprisingly tuneful songs. Back in the 90s, the DKV trio were one of the strongest forces in the Chicago improvising scene – a great group that featured Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – working together with a really boundless sense of energy! This set has the group making a great appearance at the Wels Music Festival in 1998 – stepping out in a way that's a bit different than some of their previous recordings. At the festival, the trio played their incredibly haunting version of Don Cherry's "Complete Communion", drawn out into an extended suite, with the addition of the group's "Memory Sketch", in homage to Cherry. That set is paired here with some material captured on the group's home turf in Chicago – featuring 3 long improvised tracks recorded at Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. There's a great sound going on here – the tightness of the power pop generation, which you might guess from the trio lineup – mixed with some of the weirder strains that were coming out of the Midwest underground – sometimes coming through in the Farfisa organ work of Myrna Marcarian, sometimes in the Feelies-like guitar jams of Robert Pfeifer, which are only urged on more by the complex mix of drums and percussion by Ron Metz! Song structures really open up, too – the record revels in the unexpected – and although some folks might make comparisons between the group and The Velvet Underground, they're much more their own sort of thing – with the individuality and earnestness of the early CBGB scene at its best. Ziggy Stardust guitar genius Mick Ronson issued a pair of 70s albums on the David Bowie Mainman imprint for RCA – and both of those records are included here, plus a huge amount of never-issued tracks and bonus material too! First up is Slaughter On 10th Avenue – Mick Ronson's first and probably best solo album – an adventurous set of glam pop that's both weird and catchy, naturally featuring some fantastic guitar pyrotechnics. Fascinatingly, Ronson starts the record with a crooning cover of "Love Me Tender", with his recognizable riffs kicking in a bit after his plaintive vocals – but it's that kind of anything goes weirdness that makes the album loads of fun, kind of closer to Queen style pomp than Bowie's astral trailblazing. Titles include "Growing Up & I'm Fine", "Music Is Lethal", I'm The One" and the Richard Rodgers penned title tune. Next is Play Don't Worry – catchy glam pop from guitarist Mick Ronson – the blazing player best remembered for his work with Bowie, here blending punchy riffs and heavier sounds with bubbly hooks and playful production touches. Our favorite tunes showcase the heavy guitar fuzz, but the oddball cutesy songs are endearing in their strange way. Ronson kind of throws a bunch of stuff at the wall here, and the stuff that sticks gets you nodding your head and smiling at the more innocuous touches. Titles include "Billy Porter", "This Is For You", a weird, piano peppered cover of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat", "Empty Bed", "This Is For You", "Woman" and more. Both albums come with bonus tracks that include live tracks and rare demos, plus some outtakes and an interview too. CD3 features rare 1976 sessions – with titles that include "Hard Life", "Takin A Train", "I'd Give Anything To See You", "Hard Headed Woman", "Roll Like The River", "Angel No 9", and "Junkie For Your Love". CD4 features more rarities – tracks that include demo and live takes of material on CD3 – the live material of which was recorded in Buffalo in 1976. 60 tracks in all – and a nice booklet of notes! The overall vibe is maybe more Marin County or Woodstock than any Midwestern music of the period – and titles include "Jesse's Mountain Range", "The Harvest", "Old Man", "Hold On", "Save The Life Of A Simple Child", "Red Velvet", and "Can A Star Disappear". ✨✧ VariousCapital Revolution – Le Canzoni Che Hanno Cambiato Il Mondo ... CD
Universal (Italy), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Yet here, the time is 1968, the place the Italian scene – illustrated in a set of 42 tracks by artists who include Equipe 84, Caterina Caselli, Gianno Morandi, The Byrds, Beach Boys, I Dik Dik, I Nomadi, The Who, Lucia Dall, Temptations, The Band, The Rokes, Lugi Tengo, I Camaleonti, Buffalo Springfield, Velvet Underground, Otis Redding, Francoise Hardi, Giorgio Gaber, Fabrizio De Andre, Canned Heat, New Trolls, The Monkees, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mina. Even includes "I Sole E Di Tutti" by Stevie Wonder – an Italian version of "A Place In The Sun"! CD

Planet E, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
CD version has a lot more than the 2LP – 19 tracks in all – with more by Kevin Saunderson, Gaiser, Mr G, Waajeed, Octave One, Delano Smith, Brain, and others! CD

Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Writer Jon Savage has given us some great dips into key years of the 60s – thanks to a wonderful series on Ace Records, which offered up a special mix of styles on every disc – but this time around, he focuses on a few years at the start of the 70s – and serves up an all-rock collection with a really heavy sound! Savage is never one to point out the ordinary – and the set does a really great job of exposing all these special shifts in the music at the time – sounds that never would have emerged just a few years before, and which have gone from having more open ties to their influences, to special territory that really shows both UK and American scenes making some great inventions of their own. As before, the notes are superb – and titles include "Broad Daylight" by Free, "Peace Loving Man" by Blossom Toes, "The War Machine" by Leviathan, "Magic Potion" by The Open Mind, "Rock & Roll Queen" by Mott The Hoople, "Devil Came From Kansas" by Procol Harum, "King Kong" by The Kinks, "Bad Night At The Whiskey" by The Byrds, "Comin Home" by Delaney & Bonnie, "Flying" by Faces, "Funk #48" by James Gang, "1969" by The Stooges, "Lie To Me" by Kaleidoscope, "Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Marsha Hunt, "Plynth" by Jeff Beck Group, "American Ruse" by MC5, "Sweet Jane" by Velvet Underground, "Rock & Roll" by Detroit, "Travelin In The Dark" by Mountain, "Yesterday's Numbers" by Flamin Groovies, and "Natural Magic" by Jack Nitzsche. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little collection – and one that's maybe a lot more fun than you might expect! There's little material that's actually avant, and just a few that might fall into the more boring sides of the art rock spectrum – and instead, the set brings together work from the psych and early prog years by a host of British acts who were really willing to take a chance with their music! There's more than a few big names here, and a few big hits too – but those cuts are mixed with overlooked gems and album tracks that really get at the amazing creative explosion that was happening in British music at the time – a moment when things were sounding so different than just a few years before – but results that were surprisingly groovy and catchy too. As with other box sets on the Grapefruit label, the track selection is superb – and the whole thing comes with song-by-song notes that get at the history and special quality of each number – amidst 79 titles by artists who include Deep Feeling, Open Road, 9:30 Fly, Gnome Street, Matching Mole, Nirvana, Comus, Matching Mole, The Coxhill/Bedford Duo, Spring, The Velvet Frogs, Bachenkel, Third Ear Band, Woody Kern, Genesis, The Riot Squad, Dantalian's Chariot, Mighty Baby, Cressida, Rustic Hinge, Eyes Of Blue, Fuschia, Blonde On Blonde, and Ron Geesin. ✨✧ VariousSouthern Groove – Hotlanta, Aware, & Clintone Funk & Soul – Masterful & Obscure 1970s Funk & Soul From Georgia & Alabama ... CD
BGP (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky soul from one of the less-discovered scenes in the south – the hotbed of small labels that were making some mighty great grooves in Atlanta during the 70s! The Peachtree city isn't nearly as well-cited as a soul music source in comparison to places like Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and even Miami – but back in the mid 70s, there was something really special going on – and for a strong moment, a few different labels really gave the city some great music! Much of the work here represents the changing character of Atlanta itself – deep soul vocals that were forged in a longer southern tradition, mixed with well-crafted grooves that show all the modern elements coming into play as the city grew and matured. Most of this work has a pre-disco vibe – with rhythms that are similar to the early work of Fatback or Kool & The Gang – with the difference that the singers in the lead are all pretty darn great on their own. BGP did an excellent job of choosing the tracks for the set, and the notes, as always, are great – and the package features 22 titles that include "Let's Dance" by Family Plann, "Seeds Of Life" by East LA Car Pool, "Down At The Disco" by Maggabrain, "Ain't It Funky" by Johnny Jacobs, "The Bump" by Floyd Smith, "Help Me (parts 1 & 2)" by Archie Russell, "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Ripple, "Funk Pump" by The Counts, "Claim Jumpin" by Bill Brandon, "Checkmate" by The Ebony Godfather, "Shouldn't I Be Given The Right To Be Wrong" by Joe Hinton, "Husband In Law" by CL Blast, "Only A Fool" by Loleatta Holloway, "When I Build My World" by Jimmy Lewis, and "Complain To The Clouds" by Deep Velvet. Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWhen I Was Young – The MGM Recordings 1967/1968 (Winds Of Change/Twain Shall Meet/Everyone Of Us/Love Is/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $42.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Faulty Products/Bar None, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $18.99
As great of a collection of the late 70s to early 80s indie sounds of Human Switchboard – tense, driving and raucous guitar, organ and Velvets-inspired singing on some tracks, which might make you think of the Modern Lovers, but that's ain't really right – it's great stuff, maybe we should sorta leave it at that! Ragged, but tuneful and VERY much a precursor to the sounds that would takeover college radio later in the 80s and into the 90s. Not enough people have heard this band, so this excellent anthology is doing the world a real solid. Includes "Who's Landing In My Hangar?", "Refrigerator Door", "I Can Walk Alone", "She Invites", "Maybe It's Stupid", "Always Lonely For You" and many more. 21 tracks in all. CD

Rare late 60s psychedelia from blue collar Rockford, Il – a totally great lost album of pop psych tunefulness from Pisces – who had an incredible knack for experimental sounds that weave in and out of the hallucinatory pop structure! The group centered around core players Jim Krein and Paul DiVenti, and a number of the tunes have fragile, beautiful lead vocals by Linda Bruner, bringing in a bit of Velvets style stark, haunting loveliness – and most of the tracks languished unreleased all this time! This is essentially the first real release of almost all of the tunes, and the best shot at finding an adventurous audience any of it has ever had! We think this stuff would have been hugely influential had it found an audience in its time, hell, it sounds to us like it actually did influence countless groups, even though that's hardly even possible! There's a tunefulness at the center that bears the fruits of the experimental pop sounds that came from benchmark scenes of the era, from Haight Ashbury to Abbey Road – but the found sound ephemera, tape manipulations, and tripped out atmospherics really bring in some far out vibes! An essential discovery from Numero that's as exciting, insistently groovy and eclectic as any of the rock oriented stuff they've dug up to date! A whole new genre of disco – served up by one of the biggest club collectors in the world! Dimitri's the man who's guided us through so many other great sets of rare disco tracks over the years – and this time around, he's launching new look at the form! Cocktail Disco is a unique variation that's often heavy on orchestrations, and which sometimes has echoes of older jazz, vocal, or Latin recordings – classic influences that simmer nicely through the mix – and help deepen the sound of the already-soulful late 70s style! And although "cocktail" normally means laidback or sleepy, these tunes definitely aren't – because all tracks here are in a soaring midtempo mode or better – cuts you'd be happy to play with some of the funkier numbers on the dancefloor, and which should stand out nicely, given their unique twist. 2CD set features 21 titles that include "Summertime" by Blue Velvets, "What You Need Is My Love" by Cindy Rodriguez, "It's Got To Be Love" by Darcus, "Ocean's Apart" by Vast Majority, "Show You The Way To Go" by Charlie's Roots, "Again" by Night People, "Lady Of The Night" by Ray Martinez, "Disco Village" by J Elliot Group, "Something About You" by Moses, "Baby I Just Wanna Love You" by Jonell Allen", "Canteen" by Serenade, "Starflight" by The Band Who Fell To Earth, "Take Me With You" by Ralfi Pagan, "Never Too Late" by Ms Victoria Barnes, and "Girl From Ipanema (disco version)" by Astrud Gilberto. The concert is one that was initially Ayers' gig – but he had the foresight to invite the others along – and the result is a brilliant criss-crossing of modes that draws on the legacy of Roxy Music, Soft Machine, and The Velvets – but which bristles with the darker moments of each players' solo career. Ayers sings on about half the set – but Nico also turns in a reading of her take on "The End", and Eno sings on versions of his classics "Baby's On Fire" and "Driving Me Backwards".
