Velvet UndergroundLoaded ... LP
Cotillion, 1970. Near Mint- ... $99.99
The end of the road for the Velvet Underground – but a set that's also one of the group's best-remembered albums too! The record marked a big shift for the group – a move to Atco from Verve, continuing to work without John Cale – and the sound is possibly more rockish and straight ahead than some of their previous efforts (certainly compared to White Light/White Heat) – but always with that dark edge that Lou Reed could bring to the music! In a way, the whole thing's almost a recasting of all the advances made in 60s rock, but seen through a lens that shows the darker corners and shadows that have crept up alongside – that kind of subtle, yet extremely powerful quality that Reed would bring to his long run of solo albums in the 70s – but served up here with more of an edge, in the definite VU fashion. Titles include the seminal classics – "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll", plus "Cool It Down", "New Age", "Head Held High", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", "Oh Sweet Nuthin", and "I Found A Reason". LP, Vinyl record album

Velvet UndergroundVelvet Underground & Nico ... CD
MGM/Verve, Late 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". Velvet UndergroundWhite Light/White Heat ... LP
Verve, 1968. Near Mint- ... $16.99
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! LP, Vinyl record album

Rare 70s funk from Andre Williams – one of the maddest funky artists of all time! These tunes are quite different from Andre's raw R&B of the 50s, and his funky 45s of the 60s – more in a tight ensemble groove, with a P-Funky approach that has weird vocals colliding with heavy basslines, sweet keyboards, and tight groove overall. The tracks were recorded in Chicago and Detroit – most with vocals by The Velvet Hammer – and titles include "I Don't Need Mary (Juana)", "The Vow", "I Betcha Gonna Like It", "There's A Party", "Man To Woman, Woman To Man", "I Wanna Be Your Show", and the "blue" and "red" versions of the instrumental track "The Velvet Groove"! Some of this material has been issued over the years on bootlegs, or as bonus tracks on box sets – but this is the first time it's all been properly put together in one set – providing a key illustration of the space in the group's creative stretch between their third album and Loaded! Fred AndersonOn The Run – Live At The Velvet Lounge ... CD
Delmark, 2000. Used ... $7.99
Fred's not on the run, he's right at home – working at his own Velvet Lounge in Chicago, and blowing with the relaxed, open vibe that has made his performances at the club the stuff of legend! There's a great linkage here of styles from a few Chicago generations – the proud-toned tenors of the postwar years, and the freer modes of the AACM – played in trio formation by Anderson on tenor, with Tatsu Aoki on bass and Hamid Drake on drums. Most tracks are quite extended, and Anderson's got a great way of skirting the edges of freedom – keeping a soulful focus on his horn on the best moments, with echoes of Johnny Griffin and John Gilmore in his sound. Titles include "Ladies In Love", "On The Run", "Smooth Velvet", "Tatsu's Groove", and "Hamid's On Fire". CD

Saxophonist David Boykin never fails to blow us away – but this time around, his music seems even deeper and more ambitious than ever – as he works with his Expanse group on three long tracks that have a very spiritual mix of ensemble moments and improvised individual actions! The group's a hip one – and in addition to Boykin on tenor, bass clarinet, and a bit of percussion – the record also features Nicole Mitchell on flute, Eliel Sherman Storey on tenor, Musah Hollins on trumpet, Sean Hafeli on piano, and Avreeyal Ra on drums. Glenda Baker sings a bit, and the album's got a definite loft jazz sense of collaboration at the fringes! CD

Dunham/Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". CD

An incredibly haunting session that has Stan's edgey alto fronting some of Russ Garcia's arch-modernist string arrangements – similar to those that he contributed to other Verve albums of the same style. Getz maintains a wonderfully breathy tone that floats above the orchestrations, and the album's a real winner that shows a side of Stan that wasn't always captured by Verve. An essential brush for record cleaning – very easy to use, and a hell of a value at this price! This cool little baby contains a million lean carbon fibers – which pick up dust from the grooves of a record with ease – using natural static electricity to pull away the grit, and leave you with a much cleaner record in the end. This version also comes with a velvet pad to help clean the record – and comes with its own bag too. Record Care

O'Donel LevyBlack Velvet ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $16.99
A stone laidback set from O'Donel Levy – one of the greatest soul jazz guitarists of the 70s, and a player who sounds fresher and fresher to us over the years! This album's a bit more laidback than some of Levy's other sets for Groove Merchant – with larger arrangements that feature Charles Covington on electric piano and organ, Fats Theus on tenor and flute, and Billy Skinner on trumpet – but the approach actually works well, as the slow-moving tracks trip out over a lot of space, giving O'Donel plenty of room to craft his uniquely spacious and chromatic solos. Titles include versions of "Watch What Happens", "Love Story", "Call Me", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", plus the originals "Granny" and "Nature's Child", both of which have a nice little groove! A great set from AACM legend – tenorist Fred Anderson – cut in the very familiar home territory of his Velvet Lounge in Chicago! Anderson had been tending bar and leading jam sessions at the tavern since his return from Europe in the early 80s – but ended up purchasing the venue towards the end of the next decade – and quickly turned it into one of the real hotspots for the rising Chicago avant garde! This classic live set features Anderson caught in his home turf, in the company of bassist Peter Kowald and drummer Hamid Drake – prime example of the kind of local/international crossover sets that were really shaking the Chicago scene in the 90s. The set features 3 long tracks – "Straight, But Not Straight", "To Those Who Know", and "Multidimensional Reality". CD

One of the most hard-jamming albums ever recorded for CTI – and a memorable set from British jazz rock guitarist Allan Holdsworth! The approach here is quite different than on the usual CTI set – really dominated by the guitar, and featuring tunes that take off on free flights of fancy – jamming in a style that you'd expect from American work by Lenny White or Stanley Clarke on CBS. Holdsworth also plays a bit of acoustic guitar on a few mellower, more introspective numbers – and titles include "Floppy Hat", "Gattox", "Velvet Darkness", "Kinder", and "Karzie Kay", which has a nice little break! A jaw-dropper from Terrace Martin – the kind of record that sneaks on the market under everyone's ears, but will no doubt be one of those sets we'll all go back to again and again over the years! Martin's got a beautifully fresh take on funky jazz – steeped somewhat in the classic inspiration of the 70s era, but with a distinctly 21st Century execution – with crispy edges, cosmic currents, and a chunky approach to rhythm that makes the whole thing come across with a really subtle sort of power! The album's overflowing with guests – including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Kamasai Washington, Keyon Harrold, and Laylah Hathaway – but there's also a core energy that's all Terrace's own, with lots of snakey keyboards that weave these magical tonal patterns in a wonderful way. Brilliant, and completely captivating – with tracks that include "Push", "Curly Martin", "Never Enough", "Turkey Taco", "Tribe Called West", "Think Of You", "Bromalia", and "Valdez Off Crenshaw" – a nice remake of the Donny Hathaway classic "Valdez In The Country". "Expanse" is a mighty big name for the group that David Boykin uses on this record – especially given that the combo's only a quintet – but that's ok with us, because the sound here is more than large enough to warrant the name! Boykin's working with a great batch of players from the Chicago scene here – including frequent musical partner Nicole Mitchell on flute, sliding wonderfully alongside David's saxophones – plus Jim Baker on piano, Josh Abrams on bass, and Mike Reed on drums. The album features two longish tracks, both composed by Boykin with a vision that's freely expressive, yet never too free – a perfect balance that reigns things in wonderfully, and which shows him to be one of the key current heirs to a Chicago tradition that runs back to the early AACM and Sun Ra! Aloe BlaccGood Things ... CD
Stones Throw, 2010. Used ... $4.99
Cinematic soul rooted in the rawer organ, drums and horns vibes that resonated deeply in records from north to south in the 70s – done with a lean, tight and head nodding groove no doubt informed by Aloe Blacc's own roots in hip hop – on his best album yet and one of best raw soul styled albums ever to come from our friends at Stones Throw! Good Things is a giant leap ahead of Shine Through, Aloe's previous full length on the label. We loved that record for its gritty, unique approach to funky soul, but, Good Things reaches for the heights of Aloe's heroes from Donny Hathaway to Marvin Gaye – and comes closer than we could have imagined! It's produced by the Truth & Soul team, with a timeless funk & soul vibe comparable to their work with the great Lee Fields. We have a feeling we'll still be listening to this album 10-15-20 years from now. Essential! Titles include the underground breakout "I Need A Dollar", an incredible cover of The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" (we must have dropped the needle on that 50 times in the first couple days we had it), "Green Lights", "Miss Fortune", "Good Things", "Loving You Is Killing Me", "Mama Hold My Hand", "Hey Brother" and more. The first album from Bedhead – a 1994 record that helped usher in something of a quiet revolution in 90s indie rock – paving the way for lusher, moodier and slower soundscapes, soon be dubbed slowcore! Bedhead is as much a breath of fresh air a couple decades later, delivering a timeless, moody sound that takes some cues from the vibe of the Velvet Underground at their mellowest, and more recent trailblazers like Spaceman 3 – but ultimately deliver their own distinctive, and now oft-imitated sound. Includes "Liferaft", "Haywire", "Bedside Table", "The Unpredictable", "Landlord", "Crushing", "Unfinished", "Powder", "Foaming Love", "To The Ground", "Living Well" and "Wind Down". One of the greatest moments ever from Italian soundtrack composer Alberto Baldan Bembo – an artist with a great talent for combining warmth and a groove – using subtle strings over rolling basslines and sweet keyboards – all to wrap things together in a really fantastic sound! There's a mix of acoustic and electric elements on most tracks – strong trombone solos in many parts, which up a jazzy element, almost with a Raul De Souza sort of sound – and the keyboards are offset by nice moments on vibes and percussion as well. Real spirit-lifting sounds from Aloe Blacc – a set that starts with a sense of righteousness right on the very first track – almost a gospel sense of spirit, mixed with Aloe's wonderfully secular groove! The beats are lean, the vocals are clean, and the record's got a tight snap all the way through – that hip fusion of modes that Aloe Blacc's been serving up for years, but which may well push him towards an even bigger audience this time around – thanks to the album's sharp production, and his ever-increasing songwriting talents. Lou Reed gave us some mighty fascinating music over his many years of recording – and the man himself also led an equally fascinating life – one that's covered here in very great detail, in a hefty biography that begins with Reed's troubled life as a child, to his early years moving between inspirations in literature and music, to his rise in fame with the Velvet Underground and role as one of the key underground New York figures for decades to come! The author gets at the way that Reed's always managed to challenge expectations while still remaining loyal to both himself and his friends and associates – a humanistic legacy that's almost as great as Lou's music itself. 500 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ John CaleHelen Of Troy ... LP
Island, 1975. Sealed Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of John Cale's greatest moments as a solo artist – a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Titles include "Cable Hogue", "Engine", "Save Us", "My Maria", "I Keep A Close Watch", "Helen Of Troy", and "Sudden Death" – plus a cover of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso". LP, Vinyl record album

John Cale & Terry RileyChurch of Anthrax ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ ... $44.99
One of those landmark meetings of mighty talents that sounds even better on record than it does on paper – as the set somehow finds this really special space that's completely between all the best early 70s modes of both Terry Riley and John Cale! Cale was really coming into his own at the time as a solo act – creating amazing records after leaving the Velvet Underground, but also still tied to the deeper art scene from which he emerged. Riley was on the way to becoming one of the most popular of the more modern composers – thanks to a nod from The Who, and a big audience for his wonderfully trippy records on Columbia. The label allowed the pair to create this really special music here – sounds that borrow from Riley's minimalism, while also having some of the darkness of Cale's own compositions – and coming across with this jagged, almost modal sort of approach that's really great. Cale only sings on one song, and the rest of the set is instrumental – as Riley plays piano, organ, and soprano sax – and Cale joins in on bass, guitar, viola, and harpsichord. The two of them groove together in these totally cool tracks that build and build, with minimal lines repeating over and over in endlessly fascinating groove – in a way that touches on a weirdly funky mode! The cut "Ides Of March" has the potential to be dancefloor groover in the jazz dance scene, and there's lots of other great tracks like "Church of Anthrax", "The Protege", and "The Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles". CloversTheir Greatest Recordings – The Early Years ... LP
Atco, Early 50s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
A sweet little collection of great tracks by the legendary Clovers – a group whose sound was a key force in transforming Atlantic Records during the 50s! The Clovers were an incredibly tight, incredibly consistent quintet – possessed of a rich talent for both sweet ballads and raspier groovers, in a way that helped push vocal harmonies much more strongly into an R&B mode than some of the efforts of groups who came before. This set features 14 of the group's best numbers from their early years with Atlantic – including the familiar hits, as well as some nice, lesser-known tracks that show just how strong The Clovers sound was overall. Titles include "Devil Or Angel", "Ting A Ling", "Blue Velvet", "Fool Fool Fool", "One Mint Julep", "Don't You Know I Love You", "Love Potion Number Nine", "Lovey Dovey", "Your Cash Ain't Nothin But Trash", "Hey Miss Fanny", and "Down In The Alley". Brian EnoHere Come The Warm Jets ... LP
Island (UK), 1973. Very Good ... $34.99
A record that blew the world away when it was first released – and still continues to delight all these many years later! Brian Eno had first rose to fame in Roxy Music – where his sonic sensibilities and ear for electronic experimentation really added a lot to their initial albums – and here, on his own, he's in somewhat side-stepped territory – mixing things up in the art/glam generation of Roxy and Bowie, but also already showing a darkness that really sets him apart from the pack! The first three songs alone are a hell of a statement from any musician in the 70s, and the titles alone almost get at their impact – "Needles In The Camel's Eye", "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", and "Baby's On Fire" – all songs that offer a rare blend of ferocity and humor that wouldn't emerge elsewhere until the punk movement. Yet Eno's hardly the forerunner of punk, but he's also not glam, metal, or anything else – a supremely impactful artist with this record, completely in his own space – like a rare breed that might include The Velvet Underground, Gram Parsons, or Bowie. Titles include "Needles In The Camel's Eye", "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch", "Baby's On Fire" "Blank Frank", "Some Of Them Are Old", "Cindy Tells Me", "On Some Faraway Beach", and "Dead Finks Don't Talk". Epic/BGO (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A pair of jazz funk classics from this group who got their start with reedman Tom Scott! First up is the self-titled LA Express – funky fusion with a bit of a studio feel – played by the LA Express, a combo best known for their work with Tom Scott – stepping out here strongly on their own! Even without Scott's sax in the lead, the sound here is still pretty darn sharp – and the lineup features Robben Ford on guitars, Victor Feldman on keyboards, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums and percussion – plus saxophones from David Luell, who kind of steps in where Scott left off! There's some nice jamming that's on the tighter side of the CTI sound – with lots of choppy sax lines from Luell over sweet electric rhythms – and titles include "The Shrug", "Stairs", "Cry Of The Jungle", "It's Happening Right Now", "Western Horizon", and "Down The Middle". Shadow Play is proof that the group could stand strongly on their own away from former leader Tom Scott! This time around, the sound is a bit more built-up than before – put together with a slight dose of soul in the mix, which really warms things up from the sharper sound of their debut! The album features vocals on 3 numbers – wonderful wordless scatting from Joni Mitchell on the track "Nordic Winds" – which almost comes across like a rare Euro fusion cut from the time – and straighter soulful singing from Paulette McWilliams on the tunes "Double Your Pleasure" and "Dance The Night Away". Players include Victor Feldman on keyboards and percussion, David Luell on saxes, Peter Maunu on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums – and other titles include "Shadow Play", "Chariot Race", "Velvet Lady", "Mad Drums & Englishman", and "Vortex". Beautiful work here from the Lo Greco brothers – sounding even warmer and jazzier here than on their previous work for Schema Records! The duo of Gianno Lo Greco on drums and Enzo Lo Greco on bass have a really easygoing approach to rhythm – soulful, with all the right spaces between the notes – allowing the music to build slowly with a very organic vibe – as things are expanded by contributions on tenor, trumpet, piano, Fender Rhodes, and some great vocals from singers who include Alice Ricciardi, Doctor Feelix, and Julia St Louis! Almost all tracks have vocals, and the album's got plenty of slow-building modal numbers that really take us back to the greatness of the European jazz scene in the 70s. Pure beauty! In October of 1998, Misha Mengelberg made an historic visit to Chicago – a rare trip programmed to coincide with a showcase of Dutch jazz that featured him and the Ab Bars trio, playing at Fred Anderson's legendary Velvet Lounge. The trip was notable in that it also became the occasion for Mengelberg to record some fantastic material – part in the studio (with Kent Kessler, Hamid Drake, Fred Anderson, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and others), part during the live session which transpired on the second day of his trip. This excellent double CD set from Hat Art brings together the recordings, and is a great glimpse into the interplay between the ever-growing Chicago avant scene and the larger legacy of European free jazz! The studio work is pretty darn great, but the real treat is the live set – as Misha plays solo on a few lovely tracks – like "Chicago Solo" and "Round Midnight" – and in a beautiful duet with Ab Bars on tenor, on a haunting reading of "Body & Soul". The set really captures the range of Misha's rich talents – and the inclusion of some jazz standards like "Off Minor" and "Eronel" gives the CD a well-rounded feel. CD

One of the greatest records of the 60s – and a sublime debut from Nico, sounding fresher and less dreary here than on many of her later sides – although still pretty chilling overall! The record features larger orchestral backings on most tracks – never too heavy, but with light strings that really help Nico depart from the sound of her work with The Velvet Underground. This style adds a new level of sophistication to her vocals, and really helps in her interpretation of the unusual material culled for the set – tunes that include a few key numbers by old partners in The Velvets, as well as some especially great tracks by a young Jackson Browne – a romantic interest of Nico at the time! The whole thing's incredible – on a par with the best from Scott Walker during the same stretch, although very different overall – and a key entry in the darker side of the non-hippie end of the 60s spectrum. A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. A groundbreaking set from The Silver Apples – one of those records that almost didn't get fully appreciated until many decades later! The sound here is quite unique, even for the late 60s psych rock underground – and The Apples work in a blend of spacey electronics, driving percussion, and simple, stark guitar parts – a sound that's almost to their generation what the music of Suicide was to the underground of a decade later. Most tunes pulsate with an almost organic sort of quality, and the lyrics of the songs are often quite tuneful at times – a nice contrast to some of the colder styles of the instrumentation. An obscure album by a group from Milwaukee – recorded at a time when that city didn't have much of a scene at all – which left these guys to perform in a coffee house for all the songs on the album! The set's got a vibe that's up-close, and more tightly produced than just a local live record – really great acoustics that bring out the personal, folksy qualities of the songs – which get strong direction from group leader Bill Camplin on vocals and guitar. The overall vibe is maybe more Marin County or Woodstock than any Midwestern music of the period – and titles include "Jesse's Mountain Range", "The Harvest", "Old Man", "Hold On", "Save The Life Of A Simple Child", "Red Velvet", and "Can A Star Disappear". Vertigo (Germany), 1983. Used ... $2.99
The first rumblings of the pop genius in Yello's music – a record that still has all the best quirky electronics of their first two sets, but which also focuses that energy into a sound that's often more direct and oddly hook-oriented on the best numbers! There's a really percussive vibe going on here – a quality that makes the album almost more darkly rhythmic than other efforts, but which also pushes some tunes ahead with quite a sense of drive – mixing early samples, analogue electronics, and Dieter Meier's always-great vocals into a sound that's still better than many of the countless groups who sprung up in Yello's wake. Titles include "I Love You", "Swing", "Heavy Whispers", "Crash Dance", "Lost Again", "Smile On You", "Pumping Velvet", and "Salut Mayoumba". CD

Universal (Italy), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99
A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Yet here, the time is 1968, the place the Italian scene – illustrated in a set of 42 tracks by artists who include Equipe 84, Caterina Caselli, Gianno Morandi, The Byrds, Beach Boys, I Dik Dik, I Nomadi, The Who, Lucia Dall, Temptations, The Band, The Rokes, Lugi Tengo, I Camaleonti, Buffalo Springfield, Velvet Underground, Otis Redding, Francoise Hardi, Giorgio Gaber, Fabrizio De Andre, Canned Heat, New Trolls, The Monkees, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mina. Ace (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.98
A wonderful tribute to the songwriting genius of Leonard Cohen – one that begins with some of his key contemporaries taking on his important songs – then stretches out over the space of decades, to show just how important Cohen's material has been to more contemporary performers! In fact, given that Leonard never really cracked the charts during his early run for Columbia Records, he's actually maybe been one of those artists who are more "musicians' musicians", or "singers' singers" – because his talents have been a huge inspiration to so many other creators – a bit like the statement once made about the Velvet Underground, that they never sold many records – but every one of those records seemed to find a place in the hands of people who were then inspired by them. The package features the usual great Ace Records attention to detail, which includes copious notes on the material, and lots of the history behind the songs – for titles that include "Tower Of Song" by Marianne Faithfull, "Sisters Of Mercy" by Dion, "Lover Lover Lover" by David Blue, "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" by Judy Collins, "Everybody Knows" by Barb Jungr, "Heart With No Companion" by Ron Sexsmith, "True Love Leaves No Traces" by Tom Northcott, "First We Take Manhattan" by Joe Cocker, "Avalanche" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, "Chelsea Hotel No 2" by Rufus Wainwright, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Marissa Nadler, "Suzanne" by Nina Simone, "Come Spend The Morning" by Lee Hazlewood, and "God Is Alive Magic Is Afoot" by Buffy Sainte Marie. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A fantastic little collection – and one that's maybe a lot more fun than you might expect! There's little material that's actually avant, and just a few that might fall into the more boring sides of the art rock spectrum – and instead, the set brings together work from the psych and early prog years by a host of British acts who were really willing to take a chance with their music! There's more than a few big names here, and a few big hits too – but those cuts are mixed with overlooked gems and album tracks that really get at the amazing creative explosion that was happening in British music at the time – a moment when things were sounding so different than just a few years before – but results that were surprisingly groovy and catchy too. As with other box sets on the Grapefruit label, the track selection is superb – and the whole thing comes with song-by-song notes that get at the history and special quality of each number – amidst 79 titles by artists who include Deep Feeling, Open Road, 9:30 Fly, Gnome Street, Matching Mole, Nirvana, Comus, Matching Mole, The Coxhill/Bedford Duo, Spring, The Velvet Frogs, Bachenkel, Third Ear Band, Woody Kern, Genesis, The Riot Squad, Dantalian's Chariot, Mighty Baby, Cressida, Rustic Hinge, Eyes Of Blue, Fuschia, Blonde On Blonde, and Ron Geesin. BGP (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
Funky soul from one of the less-discovered scenes in the south – the hotbed of small labels that were making some mighty great grooves in Atlanta during the 70s! The Peachtree city isn't nearly as well-cited as a soul music source in comparison to places like Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and even Miami – but back in the mid 70s, there was something really special going on – and for a strong moment, a few different labels really gave the city some great music! Much of the work here represents the changing character of Atlanta itself – deep soul vocals that were forged in a longer southern tradition, mixed with well-crafted grooves that show all the modern elements coming into play as the city grew and matured. Most of this work has a pre-disco vibe – with rhythms that are similar to the early work of Fatback or Kool & The Gang – with the difference that the singers in the lead are all pretty darn great on their own. BGP did an excellent job of choosing the tracks for the set, and the notes, as always, are great – and the package features 22 titles that include "Let's Dance" by Family Plann, "Seeds Of Life" by East LA Car Pool, "Down At The Disco" by Maggabrain, "Ain't It Funky" by Johnny Jacobs, "The Bump" by Floyd Smith, "Help Me (parts 1 & 2)" by Archie Russell, "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Ripple, "Funk Pump" by The Counts, "Claim Jumpin" by Bill Brandon, "Checkmate" by The Ebony Godfather, "Shouldn't I Be Given The Right To Be Wrong" by Joe Hinton, "Husband In Law" by CL Blast, "Only A Fool" by Loleatta Holloway, "When I Build My World" by Jimmy Lewis, and "Complain To The Clouds" by Deep Velvet. Back in the 90s, the DKV trio were one of the strongest forces in the Chicago improvising scene – a great group that featured Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – working together with a really boundless sense of energy! This set has the group making a great appearance at the Wels Music Festival in 1998 – stepping out in a way that's a bit different than some of their previous recordings. At the festival, the trio played their incredibly haunting version of Don Cherry's "Complete Communion", drawn out into an extended suite, with the addition of the group's "Memory Sketch", in homage to Cherry. That set is paired here with some material captured on the group's home turf in Chicago – featuring 3 long improvised tracks recorded at Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. The Chicago material comprises a second disc in this 2CD set, and it includes the titles "Blues For Tomorrow", "Open Door", and "Burning Sky". CD

Excellent early 80s live set recorded in Switzerland, by a trumpet player who has truly established his own unique and beautiful vocabulary within the world of progressive improvised music. Like many of the New Thing players from the 60s, Dixon seemed to languish largely unrecorded throughout the 70s, and then had a renewed lease on his recording career on European boutique labels like Soul Note in the 80s. This is one of his excellent 2 bass lineups, which features fellow pioneer Alan Silva as one of the bassists, and Mario Pavone as the other, with Laurence Cook rounding out the rhythm section on drums. As on some of his other rare sides, this set consists of a number of through composed pieces, thoroughly annotated in the nice liner booklet, but all of them platforms for each of the players to express themselves freely within. One LP's a studio recording, with 5 numbers: "November 1981", "Penthesilea", "The Second Son", "The Sirens" and "Another Quiet Feeling". The second LP is live side recorded around the same time, with "Webern", "Windswept Winterset", "Velvet" and "Llaattiinnoo Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing sounds from the morning after the Summer Of Love – a time when the UK scene really woke up to some vast musical changes – a good number of which are represented in this overstuffed set! The package does a great job of catching that special shift in modes from groups who might have been straighter mod, rock, folk, or R&B just a year or two before – and who now are really letting their hair down (and probably growing it too!) – finding confidence to work out loads of new ideas of their own, and really set the scene for musical modes that would shape the world for the next decade or so! A few of these artists cracked the charts at the time, some might hit fame in the 70s, but most of the acts are those who were part of an underground hip scene from the moment they first recorded – and still stayed that way for many decades to come. The mix of modes here is great – and as always with Cherry Red/Esoteric, there's a nice booklet of notes that really illuminates the music. 52 tracks in all – with work by The Moles, Tomorrow, Caravan, Ten Years After, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Van Der Graaf Generator, Second Hand, Eyes Of Blue, Eclection, John Martyn, Love Sculpture, Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, Jethro Tull, Giles Giles & Fripp, Pretty Thinbs, Dave Mason, Barclay James Harvest, The Aquarian Age, The Move, Gun, Deep Purple, The Bystanders, Dantalian's Chariot, Blonde On Blonde, Eyes Of Blue, and many more. The only full album from Human Switchboard – one of the leading lights of the Cleveland scene during that city's heady late 70s years – and a group whose mix of quirk and tunefulness would have made them huge, had they been working on the coasts! There's a great sound going on here – the tightness of the power pop generation, which you might guess from the trio lineup – mixed with some of the weirder strains that were coming out of the Midwest underground – sometimes coming through in the Farfisa organ work of Myrna Marcarian, sometimes in the Feelies-like guitar jams of Robert Pfeifer, which are only urged on more by the complex mix of drums and percussion by Ron Metz! Song structures really open up, too – the record revels in the unexpected – and although some folks might make comparisons between the group and The Velvet Underground, they're much more their own sort of thing – with the individuality and earnestness of the early CBGB scene at its best. What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Daily Planet", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale". An amazing assortment of rare work from Spacemen 3 – all recorded in the time before their classic Perfect Prescription album – hence the title! The work here is often even headier than material that made it on that album – completely full-on layers of fuzzy guitar – echoed, reverbed, and fed back on themselves – with a quality that has the group even out-doing any of their psych precursors of the 60s! At the time, these guys were hailed as a return to psych – but with sounds like this, they're clearly onto something new and all their own – music that went on to have huge impact far beyond the rock underground from which they first sprang. A few tunes are nicely rough demos, others are unreleased versions, and the double-length set features tracks that include "Things'll Never Be The Same", "Come Down Easy (demo)", "Ode To Street Hassle", "Call The Doctor", "Ecstasy Symphony", "Feel So Good", "Transparent Radiation", "Walking With Jesus", "Starship (demo)", "Come Down Easy", "Velvet Jam", "We Sell Soul", and "I Want You Right Now". ✨✧ StereolabCobra & Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night ... CD
Elektra, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stereolab at the top of their game! They're riding high here with a mindblowing swirl of older elements from the past – with references to old Moog records, French pop, and a bazillion other things streaming through their ears – but also refined and given a bit more vision, too as the group matures their own distinctive sound! Part of the help seems to come from two key talents on the Chicago scene of the time – producers John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke – whose contributions can be felt, but are also stated on the label as an indication of just how much the band were also sharing the city's musical wealth at the time too. Titles include "Velvet Water", "People Do It All The Time", "Fuses", "The Free Design", "Italian Shoes Continuum", "The Emergency Kisses", and "Strobo Acceleration". 2019 remastered version includes a bonus LP of demos and alternate versions. ✨✧ VariousDoo Wop Nuggets Vol 3 – That's My Desire ... CD
Warner (Japan), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic collection of unusual doo wop tunes – and one that really lives up to the "nuggets" in the title, given how obscure many of these tunes have remained over the years! The style is great – tunes that really showcase the vocal skills of these young groups – at a level that's completely amazing, both on the mellow cuts and the more upbeat numbers – all without any of the hoke or cliche that sometimes comes from the overplayed hits that can keep new listeners away from digging vintage doo wop at its best. In fact, it's probably more accurate to think of this material as group harmony soul overall – even with some of the more rock-oriented acts – as there's an approach here that undeniably helped shape the sound of soul music in years to come. Titles on this third volume include some numbers that are maybe a bit more familiar, but still pretty darn great, mixed along with a few early Atlantic soul cuts too. Titles include "Remember My Baby" by The Earls, "That's My Desire" by The Belmonts, "Love You So" by Ron Holden, "Chapel Of Dreams" by The Dubs, "Blue Velvet" by The Clovers, "That's My Desire" by The Channels, "Dedicated To The One I Love" by The 5 Royales, "Dream Girl" by Normal Fox & The Rob Roys, "Ten Commandments Of Love" by Harvey & The Moonglows, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" by The Shirelles, "Alone" by The Four Seasons, "Make It Easy On Yourself" by Little Anthony & The Imperials, and "Drip Drop" by Dion Di Muci. Human SwitchboardWho's Landing In My Hangar – Anthology 1977 to 1984 ... CD
Faulty Products/Bar None, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $11.99
As great of a collection of the late 70s to early 80s indie sounds of Human Switchboard – tense, driving and raucous guitar, organ and Velvets-inspired singing on some tracks, which might make you think of the Modern Lovers, but that's ain't really right – it's great stuff, maybe we should sorta leave it at that! Ragged, but tuneful and VERY much a precursor to the sounds that would takeover college radio later in the 80s and into the 90s. Not enough people have heard this band, so this excellent anthology is doing the world a real solid. Includes "Who's Landing In My Hangar?", "Refrigerator Door", "I Can Walk Alone", "She Invites", "Maybe It's Stupid", "Always Lonely For You" and many more. 21 tracks in all. CD

Lou ReedRock N Roll Animal ... LP
RCA, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
Lou Reed at his mid 70s live peak! Volumes have already been and will continue to be written about Lou's output in the 70s, and rightly so. This set is particularly amazing in that it follows the artful highpoint/financial failure that is Berlin – so Lou is doing the rock & roll star thing here, kinda given the people what they want in a way. What's so amazing here is that it doesn't feel like a cash-in, it's crazy good and geniunely passionate stuff! The blazing guitars don't hurt, nor does the fact the the set is heavy with Velvets-era faves. Includes "Intro/Sweet Jane", "Heroin", "White Light/White Heat", "Lady Day" and "Rock N' Roll". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing. Cover has light wear.)
