Sonny Sharrock/Freedom Sounds w/ Wayne HendersonBlack Woman/People Get Ready ... CD
Vortex/Atlantic/Collectables, 1969. Used ... $9.99
An odd combination – but two very nice albums! Black Woman is one of the best-ever (or perhaps the best) Sonny Sharrock albums, and probably the toughest to find. Recorded in New York, with Dave Burrell on piano, Milford Graves on drums, and wife Linda on voice. The tracks are nice and moody, without the craziness that sometimes bogs down his later work. Linda doesn't get in the way too much, either, and her voice is a perfect accompaniment to the dark sound of the session. Side one features the tracks "Black Woman" and "Peanut", and side two has the band joined by Teddy Daniel on trumpet, and playing the tracks "Bialero", "Blind Willy", and "Portrait Of Linda In Three Colors, All Black". The Freedom Sounds were a side-project of funky trombonist Wayne Henderson – who was in the Jazz Crusaders at the time – and their LP is a nice, bouncy assortment of funky covers of sixties soul material, plus a few strong Henderson originals, wrapped up with the same rolling groove you might expect from the Jazz Crusaders. Really strident, with Henderson's trombone way in front and goofing around, almost like Fred Wesley. With the tracks "Cucamonga", "Orbital Velocity", and "Cathy The Cooker". CD

✨✧ Woody ShawWoody III ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A perfect summation of the Woody Shaw genius in the 70s – bold, righteous jazz – delivered with a soaring, joyous message that's impossible to deny! By the time of this release, Shaw had matured to a point where he was easily one of the most important voices on the trumpet in his generation – a 70s player who pulled together strands of the previous generation – from Coltrane to Lee Morgan to Larry Young – all wrapped up in amazing music like this! The set's a major label date, but it's got a righteous power to rival the best indie label sessions from companies like Strata East or Muse – and the lineup features other key spiritual players of Shaw's generation – including Carter Jefferson on tenor, James Spaulding on alto and flute, Rene McLean on alto, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano, Steve Turre on trumpet, Buster Williams on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Titles include the sublime "Woody III" suite, plus "Escape Velocity", "Organ Grinder", and "To Kill A Brick". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and a tracklist sticker.)

✨✧ Eddie HarrisExodus To Jazz ... CD
Vee Jay/Collectables, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the true hit jazz albums of the 60s, and a record that's still pretty darn incredible today! Who'd have thought that a jazz recording of the theme to the film "Exodus" could have been such a hit? It was, and the way Eddie handled it forever transformed the face of jazz. Eddie was nicely poised between the harder soul jazz camps and the freer spiritual jazz underground that was operating in Chicago and Detroit in the 60s – and with his unique combo that had Joe Dorio on guitar, he transformed the song into a great groove that matched the other excellent material that he was laying down at the time. This record's a gem, which is often rare for such a jazz "hit" – and it includes loads of great tracks like "AM Blues", "Velocity", "Alicia", and "ATC". CD
