VariousGreetings From Death Row – Weird & Wonderful Sounds From The Vault Of Lux & Ivy ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Lux and Ivy serve up a whole host of records from death row – not the famous hip hop label, but the end of the line for those that pay the ultimate price for their crimes – served up here in a weird and wild blend of rare 45s from the postwar years! The music here is almost in Bear Family territory, but a bit wider – rock, blues, rockabilly, country, and other styles all mixed together – with a really wonderful blend of offbeat singles that we might never have heard otherwise! The set's one of the best Lux & Ivy collections in awhile – and features 28 tracks that include "Death Row" by Jimmy Minor, "Big Mouth Bill" by Phil McLean, "The Legend Of The Birds & Bees" by Hank Hornsby, "So Tuff" by The Furys, "Down In The Basement" by King Coleman, "Devil Is A Busy Man" by Sunnyland Slim, "Stack A Records" by Tom Tall, "The Last Drag" by The Voxpoppers, "Rompin" by Jerry Warren, "Ragged & Hungry" by Lightning Junior & The Empires, "The Plea" by The Chantels, and "Crash Out" by Jaycee Hill. Righteous (UK), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 19.99
The title's a bit confusing, but that's the way we like it – as the package brings together all sorts of weird and wonderful tunes – work that maybe even pushes past the boundaries of the other wild work we've loved on previous volumes in this series! The set list is huge – 50 tracks in all – and the package runs the gamut of unusual rare singles, with certainly some that might reference the odd jumble of words in the title – but others that all take off in the wonderful melange of modes. We'd not heard most of the work here before – and once again our hat's off to Lux & Ivy for hipping us to so many underground gems – in a huge set list that includes "Rat A Ma Cue" by Pat Patterson, "You're Gone I'm Left" by Tyrone Schmidling, "Red Tiger Shoes" by The Century Five, "Busy Line" by Billy Williams, "Chilli Dippin Baby" by Joyce Poynter, "Big Bowl Of Soul" by The Huntsmen, "I've Been Wrong" by Sweetie Jones, "Hot Shot" by Ronnie Pearson, "Lover Boy" by Chris Christian & The Chordaires, "Ford & Shaker" by James Gallagher, "Leather Jacket Cowboy" by Pepper Pots, "Oh Death" by John Reedy & His Stone Mountain Trio, and "Bongosera" by Grupo Afro Cubano. VariousTreasure Tunes From The Vault – As Advertised On WLS ... LP
Chess, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $0.99 1.99
A classic compilation of "oldies", put together back in the day when most of the tunes were only a few years old! The compilation was done by Chess in conjunction with Chicago pop powerhouse station WLS – and it's got a great goofy photo on the front that features all of the young rock DJs at LS in front of a large silver dollar! Titles include "But I Do" by Clarence Henry, "So Fine" by The Fiestas, "A Thousand Stars" by Kathy Young, "Money" by Barrett Strong, "Tonight I Fell In Love" by The Tokens, and "Oh Julie" by The Crescendos. Grateful Dead, 1975. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One from the vault, but a set that's also seminal work by the Grateful Dead as well – a classic performance done in their home turf – well-recorded, and captured live at the Great American Music Hall in the mid 70s! The best moments here are those long, openly jamming tracks that made each Dead performance a whole new experience – and these are mixed with some shorter numbers that really help retain a focus to the whole record too. Titles include a side-long jam of "Blues For Allah/Sand Castles & Glass Camels/Unusual Occurrences In the Desert" – plus "The Other One", "Goin Down The Road Feelin Bad", "Sugaree", "Big River", "Crazy Fingers/Drums", "King Solomon's Marbles Stronger Than Dirt", "Eyes Of The World/Drums", and "Help On The Way/Slipknot". One of the first great official releases of an earlier live performance by the Grateful Dead – an early 80s set that features an expanded version of a show that was originally recorded in 1968, and really captures an early version of the band at their best! The presentation really hints at the huge Dead live industry to come – and the more modern presentation allows for very extended performances to be presented in their full – long takes on "Turn On Your Lovelight", "New Potato Caboose", "That's It For The Other One", "Dark Star", and "The Eleven" – plus slightly shorter tunes "Morning Dew", "Saint Stephen", and "Death Don't Have No Mercy". ✨✧ SyrinxTumblers From The Vault – 1970 to 1972 (3LP set) ... LP
RVNG, Early 1970s. Near Mint- 3LP Set ... Out Of Stock
The complete document of the amazing Syrinx – a very trippy Canadian group whose use of electronics was years ahead of its time! These guys are neither proggy nor noisy – and instead use a range of keyboards and analogue sythesizers in these wonderfully varied styles – sometimes almost sonic poetry, sometimes a bit more in the spatial modes of the Pierre Henry generation – but never with as much darkness or obtuse qualities to their work. Instead, these guys are more "everyman" in their sound – yet without some of the more self-indulgent or overdone sounds of some of their contemporaries on their instruments – almost hinting at the more reflective space of new age electronics to come, but never with the same sort of sleepy or meditative elements. And while these guys labored alone in Canada in the early 70s, hardly ever getting any recognition on this side of the border, this lavish package should finally have many waking up to their genius – as it presents both of their full albums, Syrinx and Long Lost Relatives, plus detailed notes, and a full disc of rare unreleased material too. Titles include "Better Deaf & Dumb From The First", "December Angel", "Tumblers To The Vault", "Field Hymn", "Chant For Your Dragon King", "Appaloosa Pegasus", "Father Of Light", "Hollywood Dream Trip", "Stringspace Live", and "Melina's Torch (solo)". ✨✧ VariousSoul Resurrection Volume 1 – From Deep Inside The Playground Vault ... CD
Southern Americana/Rabbit Factory, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of southern soul – rare tracks salvaged from lost master tapes recorded at the legendary Playground Studios! Playground was located down in Florida – a bit far afield from more common recording sites like Memphis or Muscle Shoals – but the studio had a really unified sound, and one that easily matched the level of more famous companies up north! There's an approach here that's wonderfully sensitive, and free from cliche – a way of adapting to each new talent with a level of sophistication that was still a bit rare for southern soul at the time. Some of the best known Playground work was issued on the Minaret and SSS International labels – some of which has been compiled recently by Sundazed – but this collection here is all unreissued work, with no crossover with other compilations – a wonderfully fresh look at this under-recognized force in southern soul, presented with some really great liner notes and photos! Titles include "Chasin A Rainbow" and "No Way To Stop It" by Jimmy Gresham, "Bad Habit Baby" and "No Need To Worry" by Reuben Howell, "Watch You Step" by Jimmie Nelson, "The Funky Muscle" and "Disco Nights" by Count Willie, "Heavy In My Mind" by Doris Allen, "Love Comes & Goes" by Len Wade, "Leroy's Blues" by Leroy Lloyd & The Dukes, "Missin Piece Of Me" by Johnny Lee Hamilton, and "I'll Keep On Lovin You" by Big John Hamilton. ✨✧ Fantastic FourLost Motown Album – How Sweet He Is – With Bonus Tracks From The Vault ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A never-heard album from this excellent Detroit vocal group – recorded for Motown at the end of the 60s, but appearing here for the first time ever – and compiled with lots of bonus tracks from the vaults! The Fantastic Four never hit the bigger heights of some of the big Motown male groups of the 60s – but in some way, especially at this time in the label's history, they were a much more cohesive, organic ensemble – one that's a bit like The Originals in their strong commitment to great harmonies, and ability to always hold onto their own sort of personality, even amidst the larger Motown production machine. As with most great "lost" projects, we're not sure why this record never saw the light of day – because every aspect is great, from the vocals down through the arrangements and instrumentation – and although a few shorter singles came out over the years the rest of the set is wonderful – and matched here by another 13 rare bonus tracks, including many other unreleased singles! Titles include "A Little Too Much", "We Can Work It Out", "Take Him Back If It Makes You Happy", "You Turn Me Around", "I Feel Like I'm Falling In Love Again", "How Big Is Your Heart", "It Keeps Raining Down Tears", "In A Bad Way", "Fan The Flame", "I Shall Not Be Moved", "Double Cross", and "Loving You Is Hurting Me". A righteous treasure from the end of the 60s – an album of vocal tracks recorded by the Minister Of Information for the Black Panther Party, set to backings from the legendary jazz visionary Horace Tapscott! Elaine Brown's less of a soul singer than a powerful speaker who delivers the lyrics with an almost folksy quality – singing boldly and with a sense of power that matches Tapscott's great orchestrations for the record – done in a style that's a fair bit like his Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra work for Nimbus Records, but a bit more inside – given the vocal setting of the record. Titles include "The Meeting", "The Panther", "Assassination", and "Very Black Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy CaravanHey Jude ... LP
Vault, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99 11.99
One of two rare albums recorded by organist Jimmy Caravan in the 60s – a really great talent on the Hammond, and a player with a really clean, lean, and groovy sound! Jimmy's style here borrows a lot from the Capitol jazz scene of players like Howard Roberts or Henry Cain – an approach to organ jazz that's a bit more stripped down and less gritty than that of labels like Blue Note or Prestige – and one that uses the cleaner sound to bring even more rhythm into the mix, letting the organ leap around the tunes in a groovily playful way! Caravan's got a great sound throughout, and although the other players aren't listed, the album's got a nice small combo sound all the way through. Titles include "Off A Brass Monkey", "Equinox", "UFO", "Cyclops", and a groovy version of "Hey Jude". LP, Vinyl record album

ChallengersSurfbeat (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Vault/Goodtime, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
A cooker of an album from The Challengers – one of the lesser-known surf combos on the LA scene of the 60s, but one of the best as well! These guys have a confidence that comes through right in the very first note – a perfectly-placed approach to electric guitar that features the bold work of Glenn Grey in the lead, with very strong second guitar support – alongside bass, piano, and drums! The sound is occasionally expanded with an extra tenor, or some vocal chants from the group – but overall the core focus is guitar instrumental rock all the way through – recorded with just the right sort of echo to make the whole thing come off right. Titles include "Bulldog", "Kami Kaze", "Mr Moto", "Ramrod", "Latin'Ia", "Red River Rock", and "Vampire". LP, Vinyl record album

The Chambers Brothers live – working in the same unfettered mode as their debut for Vault Records – and like that album, a set of tracks that was also recorded at The Unicorn in Boston and at The Ash Grove in Los Angeles! Things are pretty rootsy overall here – with strong influences from Chicago electric blues, plus some of the rougher side of the soul spectrum in the 60s – almost a "more real" presentation of Atlantic or Chess Records ideals than you might get from its original artists! Titles include "Bony Maronie", "CC Rider", "What'd I Say", and "High Heel Sneakers". LP, Vinyl record album

MorningMorning (splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Vault, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 27.99
A record with a sound that's as wonderfully swirling as its cover – material from a short-lived Cali group of the early 70s, and one who deliver this set with all the best elements of the big groups of the time – but with a much more laidback vibe! Their harmonies can really be wonderful, and hardly even need any studio augmentation – as you'd get with a more commercial group – and the songs are easygoing, but well put-together – tight, but nicely far from the charts too – and served up with some impeccable instrumentation that really gives the group their own flair! The whole set's got all the warmth of the best soft or country rock material of the time, but is more personal and less major label – on titles that include "Angelena", "Early Morning", "Tell Me A Story", "Roll Em Down", "Sleep Eyes", "New Day", "Time", and "Dirt Roads". Jack Wilson (with Roy Ayers)Ramblin (blue vinyl pressing – with bonus track) ... LP
Vault/Friday Music, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 38.99
A beautiful set of modal jazz tracks – recorded by the great LA pianist Jack Wilson with a young Roy Ayers! The set is amazing, and features haunting piano and vibes interplay between Ayers and Wilson – in a style that could best be summed up as LA modern modal, but which is also embellished by lots warm, lyrical twists by both of the soloists. The title cut is a totally groovy workout on Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin", and the rest of the set includes Coltrane's "Impressions", Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments", Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder", and a great 3-part reading of "The Sandpiper". One of our favorite albums from the 60's, and a beautiful document of one of the lesser-known streams of jazz that was coming out of the west coast during the time – and it's key proof that Ayers was an incredible jazz player in his years before moving to soul music! Vault/Good Time Records, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A massive set of freak and fuzz from the Seattle scene at the end of the 60s – almost the kind of record that makes you wonder what a band from the city might have sounded like, had Jimi stayed behind to teach them all guitar! The fuzzy work here is superb – and guitars are handled by three different members of the group, with vocals topping the proceedings from Pat Gossan – a singer who's got a trippily soulful approach that slides in nicely with the music – which occasionally includes a bit of trumpet, tenor, and electric cello too! But overall, this is mostly a guitar-heavy album – and titles include the long "Gonna Lay Down & Die", plus "Three Minute & Ten Second Blues", "Watch Your Step", "Brought Up Wrong", "Hey Jude", "Crackshot", and a nice medley of "Eight Miles High/Paint It Black". There's a slightly deeper tone than on the group's previous records – all the sharp guitar lines that made The Challengers one of the best of the bunch, but with a range that stretches out nicely overall – and keeps even the familiar tunes from sounding like the usual bag! The title's no lie – as the album's got a fairly bluesy sound, and has the Chambers Brothers staying in the rootsier mode of their earliest recordings – not what you might expect from the 1970 date of the album! The album was actually recorded much earlier than the date – and features material that predates the Brothers Columbia Records sides – now in full force on the market by the time of this release. The style here is similar to other Vault albums – definitely feelin the blues, plus a bit of folk and gospel too – recorded mostly live, but with some studio tracks too – all in the righteous, stripped-down style of the group's earliest years. The first album ever from The Chambers Brother – a much rootsier set than the psychedelic soul that later earned them fame in the 60s! The set's heavy on influences from folk, blues, and gospel – and pitches the group more towards the crossover college scene than the mainstream soul crowd – thanks to an appreciatively rootsy style of production that really has the vocals and acoustic instrumentation presented without any other augmentation. Tracks were recorded live at The Unicorn in Boston and the Ash Grove in LA – and most numbers are covers, with versions of "Summertime", "Your Old Land", "It's All Over Now", "Reconsider Baby", "People Get Ready", "Tore Up", and "Money". The rare fourth album from We Five – still in the folk-based mode of the group's earlier work, but done with a much looser, hipper style overall! The poppier A&M touches of their hits are way behind them here, and We Five are almost moving into a mode that's more studio-spontaneous – a bit like some of the groovier groups of the Bay Area scene who got a chance to record albums for Columbia or Capitol during the period. Tracks are still mostly short, and sweetened by larger arrangements from Al Capps – but the vocals have a bit more soul and righteousness overall – a quality that's never forced, but which fits the group comfortably and well. The genuine love of the material that goes into these Kent and Ace compilations continues to impress! 24 tracks in all: "That's No Way To Treat A Girl" by Marie Night, "I Want A Guarantee" by Maxine Brown, "Stick By Me" by Ed Townsend, "Sweeping Your Dirt Under My Rag" by Ann Bailey, "Diamond Ring" by The Fabulous Dinos, "So Help Me Woman" by George Tindley, "Speed Up" by Betty Moore, "You Got It Baby" by The Toys, "Walking With Pride" by Dan & The Clean Cuts, "Ain't No Love Lost" by Patti Jo and more. ✨✧ Various500 Atlantic R&B & Soul Singles Vol 5 – 1967 to 1968 ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1967/1968. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Think you know the sound of Atlantic Records in the 60s? Think again – because this stunning series opens the vault to a huge amount of rare treasures from the legendary label! The package is amazing – and offers up rare tracks that were mostly only issued by Atlantic on singles – including some on the other imprints associated with the company – some by names we never even knew recorded for the label, others by bigger names, but represented here by obscure material that goes way past their hits – and which is ultra cool because of that. There's also a fair bit more deep soul than you might expect from the usual Atlantic mix – tremendous vocals, and often in less hit-heavy modes – which makes the whole thing a great revelation – and just one more reason to bow down and give even more expect to one of the key companies who helped soul music find a home in the 60s. Plus – as if that's not enough – the whole thing comes in a very cool 7" gatefold package – which emphasizes the from-singles nature of the collection. Volume 5 is overflowing with goodies – titles that include "Soul Power" and "Sly Girl" by Derek Martin, "Tryin To Reach My Goal" and "Sufferin City" by Johnny Copeland, "What's Going To Happen To Me" by Jeanne & The Darlings, "Thank You Baby For Loving Me" and "I Can't Live Without You" by Soul Brothers Six, "That Kind Of Lovin" and "She's About A Mover" by Otis Clay, "The One You Can't Have All By Yourself" by Shirley Walton, "Can't Find No Happiness" and "A Great Big Thing" by Barbara Brown, "Somebody Needs You" and "Baby What You Got" by Darrell Banks, "Please Operator" by Tony & Tyrone, "Ain't Got No Girl" by William Bell, "Let Me Down Easy" by Alvin Robinson, "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" by Ben E King & Dee Dee Sharp. "Don't Get Caught" by Mable John, "Here I Am" by Linda Lyndell, "It's You For Me" by The Amazers, and "Need Your Love So Bad" by Solomon Burke. CD

✨✧ Q-TipKamaal The Abstract ... CD
Battery/Jive, 2002/2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Q-Tip's legendary unreleased jazz funk-flavored Kamaal The Abstract album – a wonderful record that should have come out in 2002, but was held back for years – and yet, in another tribute to Q-Tip's prescience, a set that's got lasting power that's made it well worth the wait! We remember well, hearing snippets of Kamaal The Abstract on a promo-only sampler, and telling anyone who would listen to us what a wholly credible modern hip hop-learned take on 70s keyboard funk this record was going to be, and how it would catapult Q-Tip into the forefront of new school practitioners of the style. Then it got bumped, and bumped, and bumped, and finally sealed in the vault – until the gods at Arista finally decided to let it go! Fender Rhodes, Moog, organs, piano, synth, bass, soulful guitars, live, and programmed drums carry the headnodding jazz funk vibe – with Q-Tip/Kamaal's buttery vocals as a piece of the overall groove, as opposed to party rocking MC mode. The Abstract Rapper does stand out a couple times, but for the most part it's all about setting up a vibe, and what a vibe it is! The set features guest work from jazz musicians like Kenny Garrett and Kurt Rosenwinkel – and titles include "Feelin", "Do You Dig U", "A Million Times", "Blue Girl", "Barely In Love", "Heels", "Abstractionisms", "Caring", "Even If It Isn't So", "Make It Work" and "Damn You're Cool". ✨✧ Fairport ConventionLiege & Lief ... LP
A&M, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A record that really has Fairport Convention knocking it out of the park – making a bold turn towards British traditional music, but in a way that imbues these relics with a whole new life of their own! The album came at a key turning point – after an accident that took one of their members, and which almost saw the group disband – but instead turn towards the past for even deeper inspiration than some of their contemporaries, whom they'd covered on other records – at a level that seems to set Sandy Denny free into this sublime territory of her own! Denny's vocals are incredible – like a thing unlocked from some ancient vault – and they're given this wonderful focus through the growing complexity of Richard Thompson's guitar work, and the understated brilliance of Ashley Hutchings' bass – both of which bring in these modal inflections that are very 60s, and hardly conceived of as accompaniment with the original tunes. The result is tremendous – tunes that are completely transformed, as a touchstone for generations. Titles include "Matty Groves", "Reynardine", "Come All Ye", "The Deserter", "Tam Lin", and "Crazy Man Michael". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautifully subtle electronic score for this mid 70s Australian horror film – one done with a lot more care, class, and grace than some of its contemporaries – but with an equally spooky vibe overall! The music comes a bit in the waves hinted at in the title – slow moving shapes of electronic sound that have a brooding intensity – almost with the spacious style of the German scene in the post-prog shift of the late 70s, but clearly directed more towards darker corners than any of that music! Imagine a Sky Records soundtrack for a horror film, and you'll get part of the vibe here – on titles that include "Driving Home", "David's Dream", "The Vault", "Angels", "Man In The Street", "Black Rain", "Charlie Charlie", and "Drowned World". A record that makes us go "wow" all over again at the mighty talents of Bob James – because even this late in life, he's clearly open to new ideas and pushing the boundaries – which he really does here in collaboration with younger musician Sam Franz! In the way that Bob's CTI albums were a landmark electric jazz effort for the 70s – this set's maybe one for the 21st Century, with a vibe that's shows the passage of time in so many different ways! This isn't fusion, smooth jazz, or traditional jazz at all – yet Bob's got some great moments on keyboards throughout, in different sonic settings from Franz, merging together in ways that make it difficult to figure out who's doing what. Cavendish/BBE (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 39.99
Brilliant funky instrumentals from the UK Cavendish Sound Library – a company who could sometimes recorded more staid music, although that certainly wasn't the case with the gems on this collection! The music is by a handful of British studio talents of the time – most of whom come from the jazz scene in earlier years – and provide a great update of their earlier talents with some very sweet electric touches! Many of these tunes have some really great keyboards – Fender Rhodes or even moogier elements – and many also have wicked basslines next to the funky drums, which really make things kick throughout. These tunes are vastly undiscovered – at least in comparison to better-known sound library funk from companies like KPM or DeWolfe – but we'd put these grooves right up there with the best of that bunch too. This second volume is full of wonderful tracks that go even farther past the first volume – funky, but jazzy too – with a lot of work by Dennis Farnon, including the cuts "Night Walk", "Soul Type Blues", "Shanghai Caper", "Cocoanut Cocktail", "Bass Bits", "Chameleon", "Crazy Legs", "Blues For Boo", "Baltic Caper", "Test Drive", and "Nuremberg Ring" – plus "Funk" and "Rock" by Chris Barron, "Equation" and "Mad Mendoza" by Trevor Duncan, "Leagueliner" by Ray Davies, "Diraffe" by Bob Adams, and "Self Deception" by Tany Turens. Starday/Bear Family (Germany), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
Some of the most home-grown, hard-hitting work of the rockabilly generation – which is maybe no surprise, as the legendary Starday Records had a very unique approach to their music! Starday was both a commercial record label, and a place where obscure talents could go to get their records pressed up – which meant that the Texas company had their ears very close to the ground, and was able to snatch up some of the best work that was bubbling up on the scene! And while the Starday name may be more associated with country over the years, they were a key force in the Texas and Louisiana scenes during the early years of rock and roll – and definitely had plenty of artists who mixed in lots of hillbilly touches too. This killer 33 track set is overflowing with obscure Starday gems – work from Rudy Grazell, Sonny Fisher, Glen Barber, Larry Nolen & His Bandits, Link Davis, Truitt Forse, Lou Walker, Lucky Wray, Bill Browning, Al Runyon, Tommy Castle, and many others! Blue belles with attitude, and plenty of soul as well – a sweet collection of west coast female R&B from the postwar years – put together with the usual top-shelf standard we expect from Ace Records! And although R&B, the tunes here almost have an early soul sound at points – deep, heartfelt vocals that definitely lay the groundwork for southern soul and other styles to come in the 60s. All the work here comes from the vaults of Modern/RPM Records – and in addition to some key sides from the late 40s and 1950s, the package also features some unreleased treasures that easily stand head-to-head with the commercially released tracks on the set. Overlooked work from the UK scene at the start of the 70s – not exactly folk, not really psych, sometimes a bit pop – but usually a great blend of a few different styles at once! The groovier side of the Trio Records label from Japan – an imprint best known for its work in the jazz field at the time – but one that also turned out some great funky numbers as well! Trio's got a great reputation for straight and avant jazz classics from the time – but the label also picked up plenty of currents from American and European jazz funk of the period, and issued some great homegrown numbers with a sweet electric vibe – eight of which are compiled on this tasty set! As with all the other releases in this series, most of these tracks are very hard to find in the originals – so the set's every bit as essential for collectors as it is for listeners discovering the music for the first time – a great batch of cuts that includes "Heartbreak Highway" by Jun Miyauchi, "Baby It's Trivial" by Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx, "Kimagure Party" by Chu Kosaka & Ultra, "Tonpei No Hey You Blues" by Tonpei Hidari, "Go Yojin" by Kazukshi Inamura, "American Tango" by Fumio Karashima, and "Mysterious Jump" by Takao Uematsu. Now Again/Soul Cal, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful document of underground soul – not just the original California scene in which most of these keys were cut – but also the work of the Now Again label and their smaller Soul Cal imprint – which originally circulated most of these tracks as limited 12" singles at the start of this current century! Now Again have roots deep in funk – not just with their reissues, but also the original Stones Throw hip hop world that gave them a start – and the choice of cuts here is all very directed by a contemporary ear for the right sort of funk, soul, and clubby grooves that were overlooked upon release, but sound fantastic now. The title track is the great "You Can Be A Star" by Luther Davis – and other cuts include "Ecology" by Anubis, "I'm Gonna Miss You Girl" by Ellis & Cephas, "Sha La La" by Mixed Feelings, "The Stranger (edit)" by Henry Woods, "Get Down" by Freedom Express, "Love Is (full version)" by Leon Mitchison & The Eastex Freeway Band, "Wake Up" by Pure Essence, "Keep Running Away" by Clifford Nyren, and "Don't Get Discouraged" by UPC All Stars. The originals here were produced by Henry Junjo Lawes, Gussie Clark, Linval Thompson, Hugh Mundell, and Keith Hudson – all of whom handle the dubs with those fresh styles they were bringing to the scene as almost a second chapter in the evolution of reggae at the end of the 70s. Titles include "Kingdom Rise Kingdom Fall" by Wailing Souls, "Trappers" by Tetrack, "Joker Smoker" by Triston Palma, "Just Talking" by Michael Prophet, "One More Chance" by Linval Thompson, "Bloody Eyes" by Keith Hudson, "Let Go This One" by Anthony Johnson, "Can't Pop No Style Dubwise" by Rockers All-Stars, "Just Dubbing" by Hi Times Band, "Ghetto Dubbing" by Reggae Regular, "One More Dub" by The Revolutionaries, and "My Eyes Are Red" by Keith Hudson. BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wow! A storming collection of funk and hard grooving soul from the furiously productive period between the late 60s & early 70s – incredible material spun out by NYC labels Scepter, Wand, Dynamo & Musicor – deep stuff, too, with names that we simply don't see often enough these kinds of releases! Dynamic Grooves is just that – with killer numbers by favorites of funk collectors, but relatively (and sadly) obscure figures when it comes to mainstream knowledge all these years later – along with a few bonafide legends. Great funky soul songs by Billy Clark & The Maskman, Warren Lee, Betty Moorer, The Endeavors, Allen Toussaint, Raw Meat, Chuck Jackson, The Soul Brothers, The Backyard Heavies and more! 21 tracks in all: "Soul Party Pt 1" by Billy Clark & The Mask Man, "It's My Thing" by Betty Moorer, "Ain't That Peculiar" by George Tindley, "Chitlin' Strut" by Backyard Heavies, "She's My Meat" by Harmon Bethea, "Horsing Around" by The Soul Brothers, "Fever In The Funk House" by General Cook and more. Studio One, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
They're not lying with the title of this one, as most of the cuts here are unreleased – some completely unheard tracks from the Studio One catalog, others that are stereo versions of tunes that were only ever around in mono – mixed here with a few other rare gems from the deep vaults of one of the hippest reggae labels of all time! The styles run the gamut, but there's also an all-killer, no filler approach here – with titles that include the unreleased tunes "Sleeping Trees (discomix)" by The Saints, "Flying Time" by Carey Wildman Johnson, "Brentford Rock" by Studio One Rockers, "We Are In The Mood" by The Royals, "Kinshasa" by Count Ossie & The Sound Dimension, "Hello Carol" by Prince Jazzbo & The Gladiators, "Many Days" by Alton Ellis, "Too Long" by The Goods, "Think It Over" by Otis Gayle, and "Tribulation" by Jennifer Lara – plus unreleased stereo mixes of "Last Dance" by The Thrillers, and "Feel Like Jumping (take 2)" by Marcia Griffith. ✨✧ VariousHallucinations – Psychedelic Pop Nuggets From The WEA Vaults ... LP
Rhino, Late 60s. Sealed 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully tripped-out pop from the late 60s – served up by a few famous names and an even better band of lesser-knowns – all of whom recorded for Warner Brothers and related labels at the time! The package does a great job of showing the "pop" side of psychedelia – a sound that's a lot harder than the Sunshine Pop end of the spectrum, but which also shares a similar love of groovy themes, sweet vocals, and cool production techniques! A few of the tunes get a bit way out, but most of the numbers manage to pack a whole trip's punch within a short little 3 or 4 minute song – leaving us to marvel even more at the deft economy in the studio, and the wonderful quality this kind of music had before it succumbed to too many of its own excesses. Titles include "Her Name Is A Melody" by Adrian Pride, "It's Love" by The Misty Wizards, "Break Away" by Next Exit, "Hallucinations" by Baker Knight & The Knightmares, "Your Love Belongs To Everyone" by The Coronados, "That's The Way It's Gonna Be" by Lee Mallory, "Wildflowers" by The Holy Mackerel, "Smell Of Incense" by West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, "My Mind Goes High" by MC2, "Straight Aero" by Jeff Thomas, and "The White Pony" by Ellen Margulies. ✨✧ VariousLibrary Archive Vol 1 & 2 – More Funk, Jazz, Beats & Soundtracks From The Vaults Of Cavendish Music ... CD
Cavendish/BBE (UK), Mid 1970s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Titles include"Milky Way" and "Star Voyage" by John Scott, "Two Bars" and "The Scape Goat" by Pete Moore, "The Big Score" by John Cacavas, "One Way Trip" by Sam Fonteyn, "Smile Of A Stranger" by Dominic Sands, "Riff Raff" by Geoff Bastow, "Come Cuban" by Edward White, "Kaleidoscope" by Tony Kinsey, "Funk" and "Rock" by Chris Barron, "Equation" and "Mad Mendoza" by Trevor Duncan, "Leagueliner" by Ray Davies, "Diraffe" by Bob Adams, and "Self Deception" by Tany Turens – and lots of titles by Dennis Farnon that include "Night Shade", "The Rally", "Southbound", "Snowmobile", "Night Driver", "The Trackers", "Lady Killers", "Soul Type Blues", "Shanghai Caper", "Cocoanut Cocktail", "Bass Bits", "Chameleon", "Crazy Legs", "Blues For Boo", "Baltic Caper", "Test Drive", and "Nuremberg Ring". Decca (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic set – totally fresh, and way different than the usual Northern Soul compilation! The set features many tracks recorded in the UK – which makes for a sound that's different than some of the American-heavy grooves that you'll hear on other sets, and which adds in a compelling dose of British 60s pop. Don't worry about a lack in "soul", though – because that side of the set's just as strong as you could hope for – it's just expanded further with some compelling new takes on arrangements and instrumentation. Titles include "Listen To My Heart" by The Bats, "Giving Up On Love" by Sonny Childe, "Billy Sunshine" by Billie Davis, "So Called Loving" by David Essex, "Nothing But A Heartache" by The Flirtations, "Name It You Got It" by Micky Moonshine, "Don't Change It" by Fearns Brass Foundry, "Our Love Is In The Pocket" by Amen Corner, "Heart Trouble" by Eyes Of Blue, and "Something Beautiful" by Adrienne Posta. 25 tracks in all! ✨✧ Fabulous FantomsJust Having A Party – Rare New Orleans Funk From The Vaults ... LP
Funky Delicacies/Tuff City, Late 60s/Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The notes claim that this one has a "Big Easy bounce" – and they're definitely not kidding! The set's a great batch of New Orleans funk – one of the many releases in the always-getting-better series from Funky Delicacies, and a long overdue look at this obscure heavy funk combo. The tracks were all recorded in New Orleans during the early 70s – and they've got a bouncing bass-y groove that reminds us a lot of work by heavy funk combos like SOUL or The Counts. Bass, guitar, and organ are the main stars here – with occasional clavinet grooving, and also a bit of funky flute. Vocals on most cuts – and titles include "Get A Little Bit", "Junk", "Take Me There", "Who Cares", "Rip Off (parts 1 & 2)", "Just Having A Party (parts 1 & 2)", "Boogie Woogie", and "I Want You Girl". We love Kim Fowley, and can never get enough of his genius – and no matter what the setting, Fowley always seems to move around the maddest corners of rock and pop music! This raw batch of gems is all pulled from the Fowley vaults – and features a host of indie singles recorded in LA between his bigger bursts of fame – some with Kim in the lead, lots more with lesser-known talents all given Fowley's forceful treatment in the studio – a push forward that makes just about every track here sparkle like some long-lost garage rocker or weird novelty number. Norton provides very detailed notes that are as much a musical journey as the cuts themselves – and titles include "The Knight In Shining Armor" by Knights Of The Round Table, "Kalani Honey" by John Paul Jones, "Young & Wild" by Renegade Five, "Big Bad Wolf" by Kim Garry & The Rhythm Kings, "Watch Your Step" by Larry Green & The Rhythmaires, "Goin Away Baby" and "Golden Apples Of The Sun" by Grains Of Sand, "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by The Rogues, "Moses" by Navarros, and "The Trip", "Astrology", and a rare radio spot all by Kim Fowley. ✨✧ Brenda HollowayArtistry Of Brenda Holloway – With Bonus Tracks From The Motown Vaults ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection of work from Brenda Holloway – one that really digs deep to find some overlooked gems from her 60s years at Motown – including 8 previously unissued tracks! The core of the collection features The Artistry Of Brenda Holloway album – a late 60s UK-only recorded issued by Tamla, and one that features rare singles from Holloway that weren't on any other albums – kind of a special overseas package dedicated to those early UK soul fans who helped Motown explode so strongly at a global level. Holloway's vocals are wonderful – as careful a mix of class and soul that you'd find from the best Motown artists of the period – served up at a solo lead level that's only matched by Mary Wells on the label at the time, and which really seems to point the way towards a solo direction that Diana Ross would later take on her own. In addition to the 16 track album, the CD also features 8 more gems from the Motown vaults – making for a set that's all-great, no-filler, and filled with properly finished killers that should have made much bigger waves at the time. Titles include "Together Til The End Of Time", "I'll Be Available", "Hurt A Little Every Day", "Where Were You", "I've Got To Find It", "Operator", "I'll Always Love You", "Just Look What You've Done", "Mr Lifeguard", "After All That You've Done", "The Love Line", "Can't We Be Strangers Again", and "Just Another Lonely Night". Magic Touch/Funky Delicacies, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully done look at the music of Harvey Scales – a damn funky cat from the Milwaukee scene, finally getting his due! The package is overflowing with groovers – hard funky 45 cuts that Scales recorded for the Magic Touch label – mostly in the late 60s and start of the 70s – wrapped up here in a lavish booklet that's filled with well-researched notes, and vintage photos – a set that really sets a whole new standard for the Tuff City label! Scales' groove is one that we've always loved on 45 – a dancefloor-directed version of soul that falls somewhere in a space between Archie Bell & The Drells and Dyke & The Blazers – but with a heavier sound overall. Yet having all these cuts together in one place seems to give them even more intensity than before – a powerhouse package of 20 rare tracks that run the gamut from upbeat soul to heavy funk to a few early disco numbers as well. Titles include "Love-It is", "Broadway Freeze", "Get Down", "The Yolk", "The Funky Yolk", "Get Down 1970", "Funky Football", "Trying To Survive", "Bump Your Thang", "Groove On Sexy Lady", "Rock The World", "Welcome Home", "The Sound Of Soul", "Too Good To Be True", and "Love Is A Gas". Far Out (UK), 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The hippest installment so far in the Brazilika series – a mad mix of musical styles from Finders Keepers mainman Andy Votel – all in a freaky, funky, fuzzy blend of sounds! The tracks here are much grittier than the work we're used to hearing from the Far Out label – as Votel's dug through the 60s and 70s vaults of RGE/Som Livre Records to come up with rare Brazilian rock, funk, and other heavy styles from back in the day! As with Votel's reissues on Finders Keepers, there's a sound here that's informed by beathead record collecting – a love of older grooves directed by current musical developments – all with a definite ear for the wilder side of the sound spectrum. Most tracks have a pretty heavy groove – and the styles run from psychedelic rock through Tropicalia-inspired tunes, to post-bossa, Bahian sounds, and more. Titles include "Funga Funga" by Trio Soneca, "Careta" by Betinho, "Modulo Lunar" by Os Brazoes, "Terra Livre" by Abilio Manoel, "Os Bichos" by Trio Soneca, "De Vera" by Novos Baianos, "Ciladas" by Pery Ribeiro, "Se Voce Pensa" by Moraes Moreira, "Flores Belas" by Tim Maia, "1974" by Gerson Conrad & Zeze Motta, "Gamboa" by Brazilian Octopus, "Deixe Entrar Um Pouco D'Agua No Quintal" by Os Mutantes, "Periscopio" by Azimuth, and "Gotham City" by Os Brazoes. The package is one of the weirdest of the many great themed compilations we've stocked from Bear Family records – and is different than some of the more monster-oriented collections that come out every year for the Halloween season – as the work here is definitely filled with references to spiders, flies, and other six-legged critters – as you'll dig on cuts that include "Hornet's Nest" by Curtis Knight, "Tarantula" by Bruce Gist & The Invaders, "Black Widow" by The Nobles, "The Fly" by Chubby Checker, "Tsetse Fly" by Martin Denny, "Get Away Fly" by Buddy Lucas, "Lady Bug" by Chet Poison Ivey, "The Wedding Of The Bugs" by Moon Mullican, "Tarantula" by The Storms, "The Web" by Abie Available Baker, "Little Cricket" by The Royal Teens, "Tarantula" by The Tarantulas, "Fly Trouble" by Hank Williams, "The Spider & The Fly" by Bobby Christian, "Beatle Bug" by Link Davis, and "The Bug" by the Swing Kings. Funky soul from Detroit – the second foray into the uber-rare and unreleased funk treasures recorded at Dave Hamilton's Motor City studio – and an even deeper look at what's turning out to be one of the greatest long-buried funk catalogs to come to light in recent years! The collection includes some singles released on Hamilton's own TCB and other imprints, some that were licensed to other labels, plus a wealth of unreleased material. ✨✧ VariousDetroit Soul – Thirty Rare Gems From The Vaults Of La Beat Records ... CD
Grapevine (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Key proof that Detroit was easily one of the most fertile cities for soul music back in the 60s – because even in an obscure collection like this, nearly every track is a winner! The La Beat label flourished briefly in the Motor City in the last half of the 60s, and although the company never charted big, it recorded some incredible work by lesser-knowns – often in a style that's a fair bit different than the Detroit hits of the period! There's a grittier feel to many of the sides here – a style that seems to borrow a bit of influence from southern soul, especially in the way that the vocals are allowed plenty of space to open up with lots of raspy, crackly notes that really give a nice edge to the tunes. Instrumentation is tight, but often a bit raunchy – with a funky undercurrent to the soul that creates a real difference from sweeter Detroit 60s singles. As with other Grapevine collections, the package is wonderful – filled with 30 tracks that barely saw the light of day in the 60s, supported by detailed thoughtful notes on both the label and the artists! Titles include "Take It From Me" by Clifford Binns, "Try Them" by Al Williams, "I'm Gonna Love You" by Edward Hamilton, "Be Happy For Me" by The Masqueraders, "Tired Of Being Your Fool" by Nelson Sanders, "I Can Make It" by Don Hart, "I Am Nothing (inst)" by The LPTs, "Modern Day Woman" by James Shorter, "This Won't Change" by Lester Tipton, "My Darling Baby" by Edward Hamilton & The Natural Looks, "It's In My Mind" by Don Hart & James Shorter, "I Got The Power" by The Masqueraders, "A Wet Pillow" by Lou Beatty, and "Long Cool Summer" by The LPTs. A treasure trove of rare soul – a good deal of it by American artists, but pulled from the vaults of the British Ember label! The work starts in the 60s, with a definite ear for the best of the US scene – grooves that echo Northern rhythms, but often have a deeper soul feel – moving into 70s sounds as the set moves on, with a nice mix of funky and full-on modes from the decade! About half the tracks on the collection come from Detroit's GM Records, and the rest appear to be of Ember origin – and titles include "That's The Way" by The Casinos, "Dig In" by The Pac-Keys, "Compared To What" by Mr Flood's Party, "Disaster Area" by Milt Matthews, "My Own Special Way" by The Jones Girls, "Why Can't There Be Love" by Dee Andrews, "Return To Me" by The Values, "Whip Your Loving On Me" by Tony & Tyrone, "Skeletons In The Closet" by Fork In The Road, "Hey Blackman" by Ed Robinson, and "Baby Don't You Leave Me" by Carol Woods. Cosmic Sounds (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A mighty document of one of the coolest scenes in Europe in the 70s – the almost-lost Polish jazz culture of the time, a hotbed of cross-cultural musical activity! Poland was really breaking down political and cultural barriers at the time – and the country's already-strong jazz scene played host to a wave of influences from funk, fusion, Brazil, and Latin sources. And although a few of the scene's bigger names – like Michal Urbaniak or Urzsula Dudziak – recorded records in the US at the time, most of the country's best talents never were exported to the western market at all! This set's a perfect place to start dipping into Poland's rich musical treasures of the time – and it's filled with grooves that echo with sounds we'd expect to hear from labels like MPS or Compost! Titles include "Akalei" by Julius Mazur, "Oto Przycyna" by Krystyna Pronko, "Prostachny Gestach" by Crash & Grazyna Lobaszewska, "Astrobolid" by Jerzy Milian, "Bez Metalau" by Orkiestra Pri TV Lodzi, "Holding Hands" by Wlodzimierz Nahorny, and "Sky's The Limit" by Bernard Kawa. A heady helping of rare singles from the farther reaches of the indie scene in early reggae – labels that include Duke, Grape, Splash, High Note, Explosion, and JJ – all tiny companies that are now part of the larger Trojan Records empire! The work here is nicely varied – as many styles as promised in the title, but with maybe the soulful edge of rocksteady at the core – a strong focus on the kind of late 60s singles that had more than enough depth to cross the Atlantic and get plenty of play on the London scene too! Titles include "Old Time (dub)" by GG All-stars, "Black Power" by Dave Barker, "Wondering" by The Hippy Boys, "Let My People Go" by The Rulers & The Carib Beats, "It's Too Late" by Chosen Few, "Going In Circles" by Charmers All Stars, "Love Brother" by Herman, "Rim Bim Bam" by The Ethiopians, "Fire Fire (take 3)" by Tony & His Group, "Night Of Love" by Ansel Collins, "Pony Ride" by Winston Groovy & Pat Rhoden, "Dee's Special" by Lynn Taitt & The Jets, and "Going In Circles" by Charmers All Stars. WEA (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rhythmic and exotic grooves from the classic Atlantic Records catalog – most of them based around modal progressions and jazz waltz styles, which means that the set dances in a lively way through just about every track! Most of the tunes are pulled from rare 60s sessions – sparkling as a set of overlooked album tracks brought together through a compelling rhythmic pulse. The groove is more sophisticated than your average funky jazz compilation – sweeping, majestic, and pretty darn soulful! Titles include "The Fakir" by Duke Pearson, "Turkish Mambo" by Lennie Tristano, "Ad Infinitum" by Art Farmer, "Woodward Avenue" by Yusef Lateef, "Little Bit" by Eddie Harris, "Let Thy People Go" by Max Roach, "Elephant Walk" by Ted Curson, and "Juba Juba" by Yusef Lateef. ✨✧ VariousShadow Knows – 34 Scary Tales From The Vaults Of Horror ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1930s/1940s/1950s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If you know us at all, you'll know that we really love a well-themed compilation – and we're especially in love with the sort of collection like this – which can bring together all sorts of weird and unusual singles with the united spirit of a holiday theme! This collection is even cooler and groovier than some other Halloween compilations out there – as in addition to the monster rock and horror film trailers that usually show up, there's some surprising contributions from jazz vocalists, mainstream entertainers, and country artists – which make the whole thing an array of surprises all the way through! The notes and song selection are up there with the best from Bear Family – and titles include "Monster Gonzales" by Tommy Bruce & The Bruisers, "Vampira" by Bobby Bare, "Strollin Spooks" by Ken Nordine, "Dragonfly" by Tommy Dee & The Mellotones "Ghost Satellite" by Bob & Jerry, "Creature From Outer Space" by Sonny Day, "Ghost Trains" by Hank Snow, "The Monsters Hop" by Bert Convy, "Dead" by The Poets, "The Boogie Man" by The Cadillacs, "The Ghost Hop" by The Surfmen, "The Headless Horseman" by Kay Starr, and "Spooky" by George Barnes. ✨✧ VariousShadow Knows More – 35 Scary Tales From The Vaults Of Horror ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Totally great sounds for the Halloween season – a mad mix of instrumentals, vocals, and offbeat singles from the late 50s and early 60s – exactly the kind of music that keeps things weird and wild on the last day of October! Some of these gems are in the best novelty mode of the time, while others have more of a horror rock sort of vibe – and together, the package is a wonderful tribute to a near-lost genre – one that maybe got a bit wrecked when groups like The Cramps or Misfits tried to celebrate the sound all year long! 35 tracks in all – including "Tickler" by The Sherwoods, "Beware" by Bill Buchanan, "The Gorilla" by Bert Convy, "The Creep" by Ted Heath, "Voodoo Walk" by Sonny Richards Panics, "Something's Going On In My Room" by Daddy Cleanhead, "Hell's Bells" by David Carroll, "Devil's Den" by Duante Turley, "The Raven" by Freddie Countryman, "The Ghost Song" by Salty Holmes, "When All The Streets Are Dark" by Somethin Smith & The Redheads, "Dear Jeepers" by Bob Guy, and "Ghost Guitars" by Baron Daemon & The Vampires. ✨✧ VariousThat'll Flat Git It! Volume 43 – Rockabilly & Rock N Roll From The Vaults Of Allstar Records ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Allstar Records was a great Texas indie back in the day – and although not as well-known as Sun or Starday, the company issued some killer singles in the late 50s! As you might guess from their location in Houston, Allstar often has a bit of country in the mix – and this collection is a wonderful illustration of the thin line between hillbilly and rockabilly during the early years of rock and roll – a balance that's covered here in great detail in the notes, which as with the rest of this series, are as illuminating as the music on the CD! There's a whopping 35 tracks in all – including surprising early gems from artists like Link Davis, Eddie Noack, and Johnny Bush – plus lots more from Larry Butler, Daniel James, Tommy Graham, Barney Vardeman, Red Mansel, Smilin Jerry Jericho, and many others. Blue Canyon/Bear Family (Germany), 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection of obscure sounds from the New Mexico scene – work that's often got the same unusual blend of elements that's made music from Austin so popular over the decades, but with a slightly different approach! There's definitely a fair bit of country in the mix – probably the dominant genre in the set – but there's inflections from other acoustic modes, and even some slight border-crossing elements too – all brought together here in a set that's dug from deep in the vaults of Blue Canyon Records, and which even features some unissued tracks from Steve Young and Junior Brown too! The package was supervised by the label's producer Jim Terr, and tracks include "Chile & Beans" by Buddy, "Rockin Music" by Supernatural Family Band, "Phantom 309" by Junior Brown, "Another Sweetie Has My Heart" by Chantel Mullen, "Plains Of San Augustine" by Elliott's Ramblers, "Objects In Mirror" by Jim Terr, "Big Brown Pony" by Don & Victoria Armstrong, "Always Loving You" by Steve Young, and "Nothin's Any Better For Me" by Busy McCarroll. Great stuff – and one of the most interesting compilations we've heard in ages! The record blends together tracks from the rich jazz and gospel catalogs of Atlantic Records – shifting effortlessly between vocal and instrumental numbers in a spiritual package of tracks – slow and soulful, fast and funky, and with a change in mode at every new track! ✨✧ BB KingHere's One You Didn't Know About – From The RPM & Kent Vaults ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent collection of rare work from the legendary BB King – a selection of 25 tracks from the vaults of RPM and Kent Records, 23 of which appear here for the first time ever! Some cuts are alternates, some are different versions of other recordings – and all are pretty darn wonderful – that sharp-edged BB King sound right at the start, before the famous Memphis powerhouse was recording for bigger labels in a more commercial setting! Lots of these cuts have a jazzy backing alongside BB's sweet guitar and raspy vocals – a mode that's similar to the mix of bigger band and bluesy elements you'd get on early work from Bobby Blue Bland – that great Memphis mix of modes that always makes us love this stretch in King's career so much. Titles include unusual versions of "Sweet Little Angel", "Catfish Blues", "Early In The Morning", "I Wonder Why", "Goin Down Slow", "Whole Lotta Meat", "Loving You In Vain", "Long Nights", "The Woman I Love", "Soul Beat", "Don't You Want A Man Like Me", "Be Careful With A Fool", and "Whole Lot Of Lovin". A masterful set of old school funk & soul put together by DJ Andy Smith – who also worked some magic a few years back for the BGP label on the Northern Soul tip – this time out doing his thing with prime funk from the late 60s & early 70s! Smith does a excellent job of mixing sample classics that helped build golden age hip hop, many deeper tracks – funk nuggets from The Blackbyrds, Billy Garner, Funk Inc, Spanky Wilson and many more! Vinyl version is not a continous mix like the CD – and works as a straight up, excellent funky compilation.
