✨✧ Van HuntOn The Jungle Floor ... CD
Capitol, 2006. Used ... $4.99
Van Hunt makes a big step forward for his second album – shaking off the simpler soul of his debut, and going for a wider range of sounds that should push him firmly into the mainstream! We're not saying this one's commercial, but just that Van Hunt's bringing in a bit more crossover elements – touches of the funky Prince sound from years back, or the fuzzy guitars of Lenny Kravitz – still set alongside the classic soul vocals we loved on his first album, but carried off with a fair bit more confidence here, even on the gentler ballads. Nikka Costa guests on "Mean Sleep", and other tracks include "Hole In My Heart", "The Night Is Young", "Ride Ride Ride", "Being A Girl", "Suspicion", "If I Take You Home", and "Daredevil Baby". CD

✨✧ Van HuntVan Hunt ... CD
Capitol, 2004. Used ... $3.99
The smashing debut of Van Hunt – a smoky-voiced singer with a really great sound! The album's one of those "instant classics" that grabs us right away – put together with a sweet and seductive feel that's got roots that stretch back past D'Angelo into the 70s work of Al Green – and which has some really great touches on the instrumentation and production, giving the set a nicely trippy feel! Think of this one as neo-psychedelic soul – and get ready to be hearing a lot more from Van Hunt in years to come – because with a sound like this, the guy's gonna break out big! There's loads of compelling little tunes on the set, and titles include "Highlights", "Dust", "Seconds Of Pleasure", "Hello Goodbye", "Down Here In Hell (With You)", "Out Of The Sky", "Hold My Hand", and "Her December". ✨✧ Isaiah Collier & The Chosen FewCosmic Transitions ... CD
Division 81, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A long-awaited full length statement from saxophonist Isaiah Collier – a player who's been making magic on the Chicago scene in recent years, and who steps forth boldly here as a leader with a vision that cannot be denied! The set was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, on John Coltrane's birthday – and while it might be tempting to credit those forces with the power of the record, we'll decline – as we've seen Isaiah live, and heard all the promises he has to offer – promises not only delivered on here, but taken to the next level – so that the rest of the world will get a chance to hear the righteous power of this young talent at work! Collier blows both tenor and soprano, and the group also features Jeremiah Hunt on bass, Mike King on piano, and Michael Shewoaga Ode on drums – a quartet who are wonderfully woven together in their exploration of new jazz frontiers. Titles include "Invocation", "Forgiveness", "Humility", "Understanding", "Truth & Guidance", and "Mercury's Retrograde". CD

Use Vinyl Records (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You may not know the Arlecchino Disco in Italy, but their DJs have come up with some mighty great grooves for this set – a mix of tracks from around the globe, served up in different styles – but working together here as a great demonstration of all the many colors in the funky spectrum! The approach is a bit like the older Mojo Club sets from the German scene, but maybe more strongly focused on heavier funk – and most tracks here are from the earlier half of the 70s, with titles that include "Mo Funk" by Debate, "Love Circuit" by Hamilton Movement, "Hot Pants Breakdown" by Soul Toronadoes, "Buckingham Palace" by Col Nolan, "The Best Day" by Marsha Hunt's 22, "Boogie Juice" by Brian Bennett, "Soulful" by The Apostles, "Popcorn Push Push" by Ernest Van Treose & The McDaniel Mary Street Band, "Life Is Like A Puzzle (part 2)" by Village Soul Choir, "Keep Movin On" by Sugar Billy, "I Feel Funky" by Matata, "Get Up Stand Up" by Malcolm's Locks, "Gimme Some" by General Crook, "Cuckoo Cuckoo" by Chanter Sisters, "Put Your Gun Down Brother" by Riot, and "Sweet Potato Collard Greens" by Sweet Les & Joe Frazier's Knockouts. ✨✧ HarumiHarumi ... CD
Verve/Early Dawn (Germany), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the trippiest albums recorded for Verve in the 60s – a unique 2LP set by Japanese psych artist Harumi – and a record that stands proudly next to the best by Zappa or the Velvets at the time! The double-length space of the record really helps give it some shape – as Harumi starts out sweet, then gets a bit wilder, and increases the sense of experimentation as the set rolls on – so that the final track is a side-long psychedelic jam that's topped with spoken passages by Harumi's parents and sister! We like the poppier tunes the best, though – and they feature a mix of orchestrations, fuzzy guitar, and vibes – all layered with a really beautiful sense of sound, to accompany vocals by Harumi and Rosko. There's a gentle, breezy, and sometimes slightly funky quality to these numbers – Sunshine Pop with a trace of jazz – and exactly the kind of psyche album you might imagine from Verve in the 60s! Titles include "Sugar In Your Tea", "Caravan", "Hunters Of Heaven", "Talk About It", "First Impressions", "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do", "Hello", "What A Day For Me", "We Love", "Fire By The River", and "Samurai Memories". ✨✧ Bob Brookmeyer & Bill EvansIvory Hunters – Double Barrelled Piano ... CD
United Artists/Blue Note, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A compelling album of twin-piano lines – one in which Bill Evans and Bob Brookmeyer play head-to-head, in a spiraling modernist style that brings out the best in each player! Although Brookmeyer's best known as a trombonist, he's pretty great here on piano – and the album's a real treasure from his legendary late 50s years – a time when Bob was really opening up tremendously in his music! The album separates out the players via stereo – with Bill Evans in the right channel and Brookmeyer in the left – and the format usually has one player in a rhythm groove while the other solos over the top. The bass of Percy Heath and drums of Connie Kay complete the group – and titles include longish versions of "As Time Goes By", "I Got Rhythm", "The Man I Love", and "The Way You Look Tonight". CD

Gil EvansGil Evans Orchestra – Live At Fabrik Hamburg 1986 ... CD
Jazz Line (Germany), 1986. New Copy 2CD ... $25.99 29.99
The masterful Gil Evans was very alive and well in the 80s – working in ways that continued to push forward from his famous arranging modes of the 50s and 60s, and furthering some of the experiments with electric instrumentation that he began in the 70s! And somehow, the strength of Evans work really seems to come out best at the time in a live setting – recordings like this, where Gil can lead the group on long tracks that really let them stretch out with all sorts of new ideas – as the individual soloists push nicely on the larger charts that Evans provides! Gil plays piano at the head of an all-star lineup that includes Shunzo Ono and Lew Soloff on trumpets, Chris Hunter on alto, Bill Evans on tenor, Howard Johnson on baritone, Pete Levin on keyboards, Hiram Bullock on guitar, Victor Lewis on drums, and Marilyn Mazur on percussion – stepping out on well-recorded tracks that were originally done for German radio. Most numbers are well past the 10 minute mark – and titles include "Stone Free", "Little Wing", "Up From The Skies", "Subway", "There Comes A Time/Birdland", and "Orgone". CD

Archie Shepp & Jasper Van't HofFifth Of May ... CD
L&R/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A really cool collaboration between tenor legend Archie Shepp and keyboardist Jasper Van't Hof – two players who worked together before this album, and come back nicely with a really inventive sort of sound! You may know Jasper from his wilder, wiggier electronic work of the 70s – and here, he uses some of those elements in the music, mixed with acoustic piano – but often at a level that seems really well-tuned to Archie's spirit, which wouldn't have been the case with his work of the past. There's a really great sense of variety going on here – from the electronic theme "The Hunter", to a sublime mellow acoustic take on "Naima", to a strange Shepp vocal performance on "Down Home In New York" – next to other cuts that include "Pulse Of The Roots", "In A Decent Way", and "5th Of May". JD AllenAmericana Vol 2 ... CD
Savant, 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A fantastic follow-up to the initial Americana album from tenorist JD Allen – one that's got a similarly lean vibe as the first, and which continues with a new level of righteous energy in Allen's music! The titles of the songs seem to imply deeper currents from the south, but rather than rehashed blues themes, the music instead really takes off in a very different direction – full of brooding ruminations and righteous expressions – which this time around also feature some very bold work from Charlie Hunter on guitar, in a raspy voice that's very different than his older music. Allen's great on tenor, and the rest of the group features Gregg August on bass and Rudy Royston on drums – on titles that include "The Werk Song", "You Don't Know Me", "Irene", "Up South", "A Mouthful Of Forever", and "The Battle Of Blair Mountain". Elvin JonesMain Force ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Drummer Elvin Jones is listed as the main force on the cover – but as with all of his 70s albums, the whole outing is very much a strong group affair – thanks to a killer core quartet that features Ryo Kawasaki on guitar, Pat LaBarbera on reeds and Dave Williams on bass – working with a great blend of sax and guitar that really helps refine the Elvin Jones sound of the 70s! As with other records by Elvin, there's some great guest work too – reeds from a shifting lineup that includes Dave Liebman, Frank Foster, and Steve Grossman – providing that wailing intensity that Elvin sought after the passing of Coltrane, but in a fresh new way – and Albert Dailey also adds in some sweet keyboards as well. Titles include "Salty Iron", "Sweet Mama", "Mini Modes", "Philomene", and "Song Of Rejoicing After Returning From A Hunt". CD

A mindblowing moment on the Chicago avant scene of the 80s – a key flowering of the talents of Hal Russell – a musician who'd been working the Windy City since the early 60s, yet who really came into his own in these later years! Hal challenges both the AACM and the European underground with this smoking little set – opening up with unbridled energy on a range of instruments – including drums, vibes, C melody sax, cornet, and even zither – and working with equally energetic younger players who include Chuck Burdelik on tenor, alto, clarinet, and flute; Brian Sandstrom on bass, trumpet, and gong; Curt Bley on bass; and Steve Hunt on vibes and drums, alternating the instruments with Russell from track to track. All tunes are originals, and sound incredibly fresh all these many years later – with titles that include "Uncontrollable Rages", "Kit Kat", "Linda Jazz Princess", and "Seven Spheres". Cherry Red (UK), 1985. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 39.99
A great look at a year on the British scene when the final years of post-punk gave way to the kind of indie strengths that would set the tone for years to come – a moment made very famous by the C86 compilation, prefaced here by a new look at work from 1985! There's plenty of influence from the more tuneful side of the scene, and those artists dabbling in new elements of psychedelia – and there's also a few nicely noisy moments, too – from the avant rockers of the Ron Johnson label, and a few other post-Fall groups too – all brought together in a huge package that shows just how much amazing work was taking place at the time! You'll recognize a few names are as artists who had big hits a few years later, represented by very early (and cooler) tracks here – and the package has a massive 72 tracks in all – with work from Brilliant Corners, A Witness, Age Of Chance, The Nose Flutes, Bogshed, Primal Scream, Woodentops, The Loft, James, Shop Assistants, June Brides, Snakes Of Shake, Househunters, Sudden Afternoon, Stone Roses, The Janitors, Folk Devils, Meat Whiplash, McCarty, Biff Bang Pow, The Bodines, Miaow, Microdisney, Grab Grab The Haddock, The Wake, In Embrace, and many others. Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
A deep dig into the farther reaches of the exotica boom of the late 50s – served up with the same sort of focus on unusual tracks that we love on the other collections from Lux & Ivy! Given the raunchy sound of The Cramps, you might not expect the duo to have as strong of an ear for the softer sounds of the islands – but there was always such a mish-mash of influences going into the postwar pastiche of their sound, and exotica certainly left its mark too! These tracks run from familiar names to much more obscure albums and singles – a very heady package that's divided up into a light CD, and a dark CD – with 34 titles that are awash in exotic percussion, strange sound effects, flute lines, echoey keyboards, vibes, and lots lots more. Titles include "Besame Mucho" by Ralph Font, "Ochun" by Johnny Richards, "Room 43" by Ray Anthony, "125th Street Prophet" by Phil Moore, "Hysteria" by Richard Shores, "Foggy Recollections" by Jack Fascinato, "Algiers" by Bianchi, "Now Is The Hour" by Leo Addeo, "Dawn Under The Sea" by Les Baxter, "Caravan" by Tak Shindo, "I Talk To The Trees" by Ruth Welcome, "Balsa Boat" by Elisabeth Windo, "Ebb Tide" by The Living Strings, "Legend Of The Rain" by Arthur Lyman, and "Head Hunters" by John McFarland. MPS (Japan), 1969. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A legendary session of avant garde jazz – recorded by MPS at the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meeting in 1969! The centerpiece of the record is the performance by the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Orchestra – which is led by Lester Bowie, and features Albert Mangelsdorff, Eje Thelin, Kenny Wheeler, Roscoe Mitchell, Alan Skidmore, Steve McCall, Tony Oxley, Willem Breuker, and other American and European avant players. The group performs a 2 part version of the title track – and their set is a beautiful mix of out styles, and a rare occasion to hear AACM players interacting with other European free jazz musicians. The other tracks on the record feature smaller groups culled from the larger one – and they include Terje Rypdal's group with Karin Krog doing "Ved Soerevatn", Karin performing "For My Two JBs" on a multitrack recorder, and Willem Breuker and John Surman dueting on "May Hunting Song". Vanguard/Light In The Attic, 1972. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful lost gem from the legendary Vanguard Records – a set issued in the 70s, but with the best independent spirit of the label from the decade before! Bob Frank is a very unique songwriter – and has this amazing ability to paint these personal little pictures in song – portraits of unique characters and individuals from the darker side of American life – sung in a frank (no pun intended), straight style that doesn't pull any punches – and which offers slightly different shading in words and structure to fit each individual. The album virtually disappeared upon release – possibly because it was too folksy for the post-folk generation – but it's a real treasure that we'd rank up there with the hippest of the 60s underground singer-songwriters. Titles include "Wino", "She Pawned Her Diamond For Some Gold", "Before The Trash Truck Comes", "Layin Around", "Return To Skid Row Joe", and "The Deer Hunter". CD

Very hip early work from George Russell – a set that's maybe not as high-concept as some of his later records, but which still has a strikingly modern vibe! Russell's trying out some of his new tonal ideas here – and has a group that's very well-chosen for the project – with Art Farmer on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Barry Galbraith on guitar – all players with just the right sort of color in their tone, able to illustrate George's ideas but still bring a bit of personality to the mix as well. Titles are mostly originals, written with slight touches of whimsy, but less of the indulgence on that front as you'd hear on west coast material – and tracks include "Witch Hunt", "The Sad Sargeant", "Ballad Of Hix Blewitt", "Knights of The Steamtable", "Jack's Blues", and "Night Sound". Mars Williams presents a great installment in this surprisingly long-running series – a really unusual mix of Christmas songs with the avant jazz inspiration of Albert Ayler – served up here in two different performances – one recorded in Chicago, the other in New York! As with the previous volumes, there's a stunning mix of sounds going on – some of the sentiment you might get in a Holiday tune, which seems to open up the more human corners of Ayler music – which includes snippets of "Spirits", "The Truth Is Marching In", "Omega", and "Change Has Come" – folded together with Christmas themes on these beautiful long improvisations! The Chicago group features Williams on saxes and toy instruments – plus Josh Berman on cornet, Jim Baker on piano and viola, Kent Kessler on bass, Brian Sandstrom on bass and guitar, and Steve Hunt on drums – and the New York group features Steve Swell on trombone, Hilliard Greene on bass, Chris Corsano on drums, Nels Cline on guitar, and Fred Lonberg Holm on cello. Vinyl version features two side-long tracks – two versions of "Noel Omega Change Has Come For The Three Kings Who Lit The Tiny Candles" – one by each group! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the hippest installments so far in this legendary series – an excellent back of laidback funky cuts – super-sweet stuff, with a great lowdown sort of groove! ✨✧ Mars WilliamsAyler Xmas 4 – Chicago Vs New York ... CD
Soul What/Astral Spirits, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "The Heavenly Home Bashing Of The Bells", "The Hanukkah Xamas March Of Truth For 12 Days Of Jingling Bells With Spirits In Chicago", "Did You Hear They Found Light In Darkness Looking For Chestnuts", and "Noel Omega Change Has Come For The Three Kings Who Lit The Tiny Candles In NYC". ✨✧ Johnny OtisJohnny Otis Show Live At Monterey ... CD
Epic/Legacy, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Johnny's very much in his "revival" mode here – dipping back to his earlier R&B roots, and working with a host of famous older blues singers. The set's got vocals by Roy Milton, Roy Brown, Esther Phillips, Mighty Mouth Evans, Ivory Joe Hunter, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Margie Evans, and Big Joe Turner – and even though Shuggie Otis is on the album, the whole thing's a pretty bluesy affair overall. Titles include "Shuggie's Boogie", "Plastic Man", "Margie's Boogie", "Baby You Don't Know", "Little Esther's Blues", "RM Blues", "Goin Back To LA", "Willie & The Hand Jive", and "Since I Met You Baby". ✨✧ Alice ColtraneHuntington Ashram Monastery/World Galaxy ... CD
Impulse, 1969/1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spiritual sounds galore – an amazing 2-fer from Alice Coltrane! Huntington Ashram Monastery is powerful work from Alice Coltrane – an incredible trio album that features her heavily on harp, plus a bit of piano – in a trio with Ron Carter on bass and Rashied Ali on drums! The sound is wonderful – lush, yet contemplative – in a personal style that really shows Alice beginning to express herself in new modes after the death of The Great One. The us of harp is especially incredible – handled here with a sense of majesty that really leaves us breathless, and which goes far beyond other use of that instrument in jazz. And even Alice's piano is surprisingly nice – with these mellow, earthy undertones that bubble at the bottom and ground the whole effort on earthly territory. Titles include "Turiya", "HIS", "Jaya Jaya Rama", and "Via Sivanadagar". World Galaxy is one of Alice Coltrane's most ambitious albums of the early years – recorded with a full set of heavenly orchestrations! The core group features Alice on piano, organ, and harp – alongside Frank Lowe on saxes, Reggie Workman on bass, Leroy Jenkins on violin, and Ben Riley on drums. Added to this combo is a much larger set of strings – swirling around in a rich musical backdrop that gives Alice's work a sense of majesty and power we could have never imagined. This is the album that really showed the world that she was far far more than just the wife of the late great one – a true mystical visionary with a sound that demanded to be heard! Side 2 features a recitation by Alice's spiritual mentor, Swami Satchdiananda – and the album features a wonderful version of "My Favorite Things", done with both organ and harp, plus the tracks "Love Supreme", "Galaxy In Turiya", and "Galaxy In Satchidandana". VariousTeen Expo – The Cleopatra Label ... CD
Numero, 1960s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A great little look not just at a small indie label of the 60s – but also that decade's larger underground music scene – served up here on a set of recordings done for the tiny Cleopatra label in New Jersey! There's definitely lots of those "wanna be hitmaker" cuts that can make a tiny label so great – but Cleopatra also had a great ear for talents who ran around the farther range of pop as well – cool female singers with a nice slinky sound, or male artists who might have been going for deeper styles that wouldn't really flourish more strongly until a few years later in the mainstream – all captured with surprising care and taste by label head Tommy Falcone! As with the best of the other Numero sets like this, the story behind the label is as great as the music itself – quite compelling, given that Falcone and most of his artists were just a stone's throw away from New York – but often a world away, given the gap between mainstream fame and indie obscurity. The set features 26 tracks in all – and includes some by The Inmates, probably the biggest act to come from Falcone's studios – plus Bernadette Carroll, The Tabbys, Dick Hunter, Vickie & The Van Dykes, The Ovations, Centuries, Hallmarks, Johnny Silvio, Jimmy Davis, Tommy Manno, Eugene Viscione, and The Shandillons. ✨✧ Regional GarlandMixed Sugar – The Complete Works 1970 to 1987 ... CD
Now Again, 1970s/1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic anthology of Flint, MI soul great Regional Garland – 70s soul empires were built on lesser talent than you'll find on this set put together by Egon & Now Again! Garland is a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger of whom we were most familiar with for his work with the group Hunt's Determination – a taste of which is included here, along with Regional's recordings with The Perfections, 21st Generations, Mixed Sugar, Brilliance and others. Even the few Hunts Determination records we were familiar with show a fairly staggering stylistic range, while holding together as a tight whole – and that's all the more impressive with a broader collection of work with varying personnel here. The heart of the collection is early-to-late 70s recordings, from dancefloor soul, funk and strains of disco later in the decade – revelatory stuff for us. We knew the man was good, but, damn! The set also features several mid 80s recordings with that era's synth textured sound with the 70s soul vocals surprisingly well. Includes "I Need Love" & "Hey James" with 21st Generations, "Get On Down" & "Girl You Better Hurry" with The Perfections, "I Need Love" and "Are We Through" with Hunts Determination, "15 Ain't Young No More", "It's A Bad Feeling" and "Disco Jam Bam Bam" with Mixed Sugar, the previously unreleased "Gangster Girl" and "I'm Sad We've Broke Up", "I'm Falling In Love" with Vann & Reggie, "Hit Girl" with Brilliance and more. Nice notes with personnel, and a couple bonus versions "I Need Love". CD

Strawberry (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. Used 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic package of work from British singer/producer/arranger Mike Hurst – a huge talent who's not that well known on our shores, but who had a hand in a huge amount of classic recordings in the 60s and 70s! This set is a huge introduction to Mike's many talents – and although we know one or two of his full albums, and see his name on many famous records, it's clear that we only were seeing the tip of the iceberg compared to the material on this set! CD1 brings together early singles that Hurst recorded under his own name, at a time when he was a catchy singer trying to break into the world of British pop. CD2 features two rare albums issued by Capitol at the start of the 70s – Home and In My Time, both of which show this really strong development of Mike as a singer/songwriter, with his own production strengths helping things out even more! CD3 and CD4 really open things up – as they bring together a huge amount of classic Mike Hurst work behind the scenes – working as producer and songwriter with a host of legendary talents and ultra-hip British acts – artists who include PP Arnold, Barry St John, Warm Sounds, Murray Head, Chris Farlowe, Alan Bown, Spencer Davis Group, Marsha Hunt, Bobby Lee, Nirvana, Colin Blunstone, Hardin York, The Move, Fingertips, Fumble, Fancy, Nolan Sisters, and many others – some of whom are represented here by songs that appear here for the first time. 92 tracks in all – with very detailed notes! ✨✧ Bennie MaupinJewel In The Lotus ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most earthy, organic offerings of the Herbie Hancock scene of the 70s – a session that's led by Headhunter reedman Bennie Maupin, and which also features Herbie on acoustic and electric piano – all in a sound that's quite different from his own work of the time! The tracks here have a very spacious, slow-building approach – a sound that's often quite stark at times, and not nearly as funky or soul-directed as you might expect. Maupin shows incredible sensitivity in his way of putting together a tune – letting things come together quite naturally, almost with the botanical quality you might expect from the title. Other players include Buster Williams on bass, Freddie Waits and Billy Hart on drums, Bill Summers on percussion, and Charles Sullivan on trumpet – all used quite spaciously and sparingly. Titles include "Esenada", "Mappo", "Excursion", "Past Is Past", "The Jewel In The Lotus", and "Song For Tracie Dixon Summers". CD

Saturn/Evidence, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful session recorded in New York in 1963 – and featuring the band at its progressive best! The album has many dark overtones, and features a core group that includes Marshall Allen, Danny Davis, John Gilmore, and Pat Patrick – playing their usual horns, plus percussion, amidst reverb by Thomas "Bugs" Hunter and performances by Ra on gong, pianoforte, and clavioline. The whole set has an open-ended "loft jazz" kind of feel – typical for the mid 70s New York avant scene, but groundbreaking at the time of this recording. Titles include "Celestial Fantasy", "The Idea Of It All", "Next Stop Mars", and "Ecstasy Of Being". CD

✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – Twinight's Lunar Rotation ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The best look at Chicago's legendary Twinight label that we've ever seen – a massive 2CD set that goes way past the obvious hits, and really digs into the heart and soul of this unique little record company! Twinight is best known as the home of Syl Johnson during his legendary run of funky soul singles at the end of the 60s – but the company was also home to a lot of other great talent during the same stretch – harmony vocal groups, sweet soul singers, funky combos, and more – all of which you'll hear in this incredible little set! (And in fact, the set does such a great job of presenting the other artists on Twinight, that it leaves out Syl Johnson entirely – so the package is a 100% non-Syl set – which is ok with us, because you can always get Johnson's work on other reissues.) The Numero Group have really outdone themselves this time around – using their careful ear to pull out the best lost bits from Twinight, remastered here with wonderful sound – and a brilliant 32 page booklet that tells the story of the label, and also includes loads of vintage photos. The set's a must-have for any fan of quality funk or soul – and the package includes a whopping 40 titles that include "Goin Man Huntin" by Jo Ann Garrett, "I've Made Up My Mind" by Josephine Taylor, "A New Day" by The Notations, "Nevermore" by Renaldo Domino, "Yesterday's Mistakes" by Jimmy Jones, "I'll Always Love You" by Velma Perkins, "Life Walked Out" by Mist, "Put Out The Fire by Mystiques, "You & Me Baby" by Kaldirons, "Rosemarie" by Dynamic Tints, "Remind Me" by Schiller Street Gang, "Is It Meant To Be" by Krystal Generation, "Pardon My Innocent Heart" by Nate Evans, "Package Of Love (part 1)" by Dynamic Tints, "The Devastator" by Stormy, "Mama" by Annette Poindexter, "Pass It On (part 1)" by Pipes Of Peace, "My Sunshine Girl" by Radiants, "Let Me Come Within" by Renaldo Domino, "Soul Strokes" by Sidney Pinchback, and "Can You Find Me Love" by Harrison & The Majestic Kind. ✨✧ VariousKev Beadle Presents The Best Of Inner City Records ... CD
Inner City/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overdue look at the great range of sounds that came from Inner City Records at the end of the 70s – a hip American indie with a strong specialty in soulful fusion, hip vocalists, and a range of other great styles too – all brought together here by London DJ Kev Beadle! Inner City's often a bit overlooked – as the label flourished most strongly in the years after some of the better-known soulful imprints of the 70s – and the label always had a great ear for new sounds, fresh ideas, and the kind of compelling global elements that often led them to license key tracks from overseas, and bring them to the US market. This collection's heavy on singers – the kind of cool, underground jazz vocalists that Inner City captured so well – and it's also got a nice mix of funky fusion, modal numbers, and spiritual currents – on titles that include "The Other World" by Judy Roberts, "Hunt Up Wind" by Hiroshi Fukumura, "Vera Cruz" by Helen Merrill, "Lucky Southern" by Tom Lellis, "Quickie Nirvana" by Kellis Ethridge, "Samba De La Cruz" by Terumasa Hino, "So High" by Janet Lawson, "The Samba" by Jeff Lorber, "Return Of The Prodigal Son" by Joe Lee Wilson, "Shenkansen" by Urszula Dudziak, "To An Elfin Princess" by Charlie Mariano, "Pandora" by Carlos Franzetti, and "Jennine" by Eddie Jefferson.
