✨✧ Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD
(SHM-CD pressing – part of the 60 Impulse series!)

Peven EverettBeyond The Universe ... CD
Studio Confession, 2009. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
One of the heaviest house albums we've heard from Peven Everett in years – a set that's filled with upbeat, joyous grooves – all done with the same deep soul you'd expect from other recent records! The whole thing's a great step back towards some of the classic grooves from Everett's Chicago scene – the spare pumped-up rhythms that first hit the Windy City back in the 80s house years, transformed here with a 21st Century vibe that has Peven tricking up the rhythms a bit and spacing out some of the instrumentation. Everett's vocals are great, as always – and soulfully sew the tunes together – providing a lot more solid grounding than you'd get in the average house album, and touching nicely on a number of cosmic themes. Titles include "Passing Phase", "Technology", "Inspiration", "Screwed", "Bonanza", "Poppin", "Any Mountain", "I Need You", and "Girl Of My Dreams". CD

The second Gramavision album by MM&W, and a batch of grooves that shows them opening up their style a lot more than on their first one. There's equal parts of Larry Young and Jimmy McGriff mixed into the organ here, and the rhythm, while tight, is also got a nice open-ended feel. Titles include "Shack", "Tea", "Chinoiserie", "House Mop", "Paper Bass", and "Cubb Sub". CD

Rambling (Japan), 2003. Used ... $18.99
A great take on recent work from France – one that focuses on tracks that have a quirky and retro approach to the groove, quite different in most places from the more famous house and techno coming out of Paris! The work here is very much in the spirit of the 60s mod Euro sound of the Rambling Records label – and the set brings together 14 tracks from a variety of French sources, with titles that include "La Vieux Thorax" by Playtime, "Le Party" by The Superhero's Conception Of Love, "Sunshine Yellow" by Burgalat, "Phonic Strip" by Le Grand David, "Jazz" by Fred & Plume, "Sugar" by Zimpala, "Toutes Les Filles Et Les Garcons" by Les Matchboxx, and "Erzatzophonie" by Rubin Steiner. ✨✧ Sun RaQuiet Place In The Universe ... CD
Leo (UK), 1976/1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare 70s live work by the Sun Ra Arkestra – and a great example of why Sun Ra fanatics tend to favor tapes of his concerts as much as his studio albums! The work here is of mysterious origin – and even the notes aren't sure of the venue of exact date of the set – but the details aside, the music is totally great – a really freely creative performance from the Arkestra, one that captures their real talents for spontaneous musicality in any setting! Players most likely include Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Vincent Chaney on French horn, Craig Harris on trombone, Marshall Allen on alto sax, and John Gilmore on tenor – and Sun Ra himself plays some great organ and synthesizer, further adding to the other-worldly sound of the set! Titles include "I'll Never Be The Same", "Love In Outer Space", "I Pharoah", "A Quiet Place In The Universe", and "Images". CD

Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Blast off into space with The Cramps – with plenty of firepower here in a collection of unusual space-themed and space-sounding tunes from the glory days of the postwar recording industry! Some of the tunes have the raw, raunchy vibe of other material in this great series of Lux & Ivy compilations on Righteous – but others have maybe a moodier, spacier feel – as the work is pulled from a variety of sources that include modern jazz, avant electronics, exotica records, and some great space age pop releases! There's occasional snippets of dialogue from old sci fi films, which helps link the tunes – and titles include "Deep Night" by Frank Comstock, "Skin Tight" by Basil Kirchin, "Perpetual Motion" by Moondog, "Winds Of Sirius" by Les Baxter, "Waltz In Orbit" by Ray Cathode, "Astronic" by Jimmie Kaskell, "Robot Man" by Jamie Horton, "Ghost Satellite" by Bob & Jerry, "The Moon" by Ron Goodwin, "Full Moon" by Eden Ahbez, "Shock Treatment" by The Invaders, and "Ignition" by Tom Dissevelt. Larry CoryellReal Great Escape (LP style gatefold sleeve) ... CD
Vanguard/Universe (Italy), 1973. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
Larry Coryell tries out his vocal chops a bit on this album with his classic group from the early 70s – but the main "voice" on the record is still his wonderfully tight guitar – which has a beautifully sharp sound throughout! When Coryell sings, he almost seems to be doing so through the pickup of a guitar – or a least getting processed via pedals and effects – which gives his singing as much fuzz as his electric instrument – set up in a great combo that features work on tenor and soprano sax from Steve Marcus, and a mixture of piano and Arp from the great Mike Mandel. Titles include "PF Sloan", "The Real Great Escape", "Are You Too Clever", "Love Life's Offering", and "Makes Me Wanna Shout". CD

A really fantastic group from the Dutch scene at the start of the 70s – a scene that didn't give the world as much progressive rock as other parts of the continent at the time – but one that also had a pretty darn great approach to jazz! Pugh's Palace work here in a way that really references that latter side of the scene – bringing in lots more jazz to their sound than other groups of this nature – with a lineup that includes vibes and flute alongside the guitar and vocals – often on long-spun tracks that have plenty of jazzy changes, and lots of funky moments too! Vocals are in English – and titles include "You'll Know It Tomorrow", "If Only I Could", "Flying So High", "After Death", and "Appointment". LP, Vinyl record album

AmbianceInto A New Journey ... CD
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". Hank Ballard & The MidnightersUnwind Yourself – The King Recordings 1964 to 1967 ... CD
King/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Some of our favorite work ever from the legendary Hank Ballard – a key figure in early R&B, and a singer who cut some big hits with his group The Midnighters – but one who also continued to do some wonderful work for King Records long after his hits – most of which is included in this wonderful set! The package focuses on years that might be deemed "lost" for Hank – a time when he was past the dance hits of the early part of the 60s, and yet to rise as part of the James Brown universe at the end of the decade – although still, in some way, already strongly in the JB side of the spectrum with cuts like these – deep soul gems, funky numbers, and the kind of rough romping tunes that draw from R&B, but have more of a 60s vibe here. CD features 26 cuts in all – including "Poppin The Whip", "Here Comes The Hurt", "Funky Soul Train", "Do it Zulu Style", "Dance Till It Hurtcha", "Let's Get The Show On The Road", "Annie", "Unwind Yourself", "Which Way Should I Turn", "I'm Just A Fool", "Get That Hump In Your Back", "Just You Just You", "A Winner Never Quits", "Somebody's Got To Help Me", and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show". One of the great late 70s Columbia sets from the Earth Wind & Fire side of the universe – the one and only album by this obscure west coast group, who get some strong help in the studio from Phillip Bailey! Bailey co-produced, and wrote some great songs for the record – and the group's own mix of jazz, funk, and soul is very much in the best spirit of Earth Wind & Fire at the time – tight at all the right moments, but also with this righteous energy in the background – an overall feel that's way deeper than most large ensembles on major labels. This spirit really comes through in the sublime cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window" – which has a beautifully mellow jazzy groove, and which is on a par with anything Maurice White was laying down in the mid-tempo mode in the 70s – but the whole album's mighty nice, and other titles include "Smile", "Spirit Of Love", "Second Coming", and "Say You Do". The set's got this very rich presentation – as the leader's work on trumpet is mixed with harp from Maddie Herbert, flute and tenor from Matt Cliffe, piano and kalimba from Livin Gheorghe, and great use of percussion, bass, and drums – all on long tracks that build with the best sort of post-Coltrane energy – titles that include "Joyful Spirits Of The Universe", "Mindfulness Meditations", "Tropical Landscapes", "Harmony With Nature", and "The Energy Of Life". One of the most striking Don Pullen albums of the 80s – a beautifully open session that has the pianist co-leading a version of the 360 Experience group of drummer Beaver Harris – with an excellent lineup that also features Ricky Ford on tenor sax, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, and Buster Williams on bass! The mix of players is unusual, and the sound here is as well – a record that easily steps between freer moments and more tuneful passages – imbued with the creative spirit of the loft jazz generation, but also taken a step further too – possibly via the album's production work by Hal Willner. There's some truly majestic moments on the album – and the whole thing is a great demonstration of the way that the farther fringes of the jazz universe were finding even more focused expression in the 80s – during a time when records like this really helped give musicians a great outlet for their new ideas. The set begins with the very long "Goree", which has additional work by Candido on percussion – and other tracks include "Land Of The Pharoahs", "Double Arc Jake", and "Newcomer". CD

It's been many years since Sa-Ra have expanded our minds with their revolutionary blend of hop hop and soul – but fortunately, Shafiq Husayn has carried on the group's legacy – and has reached an even higher plane with music like this! Husayn brings all the fantastic production skills to the album that made Sa-Ra great, but also really opens the door to a much more cosmic soul style of presentation – one that creates a sonic universe that's all his own, but which is big enough to allow for some really great guest work from a lineup that includes Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kaiyote, Anderson.Paak, Robert Glasper, Bilal, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus! Other members include Keir Nueringer on tenor, Aquiles Navarro on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass, and Tcheser Holmes on drums – and all members also play percussion – on titles that include "Bread Out Of Stone", "The Code Noir/Amina", "Who Sent You – Ritual", "No Mas", and "Blues Ideology". JBsMore Mess On My Thing ... CD
Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
A fantastic slice of lost work from the legendary JBs – including the track that first got Bootsy Collins and company the job as James Brown's backing band! The set leads off with that gem of a groove – the fast funky "More Mess On My Thing" – a tune that's got the sort of impeccable sharpness the JBs would bring to the James Brown universe in the early 70s – complete with tight drums, effortless basslines, and horn lines so tight they could cut glass! "The Wedge" follows – a sweet organ-driven instrumental with a vibe that's a lot like "Brother Rapp" – but stretched out as a long instrumental jam! And that approach really takes off on the super-long "When You Can Feel It Grunt (If You Can)" – a tune that begins with the band doing their own version of "Let The Music Take Your Mind", before going off into all the these other directions on the first-ever issue of the complete take of the tune! Kool & The GangEverybody's Dancin' ... CD
De-Lite/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used ... $4.99
Kool & The Gang sounding super-tight, but mighty right as well – a groove that still has all the great jazz elements of their mid 70s records, but which also has them picking up the bassy bottom a bit more too! The sound is not nearly as slick as their 80s hits – and instead still really hangs onto all the best qualities of the De-Lite years, while also moving the group forward at a level that strongly contests all the younger funky combos who were trying to steal their flame! Rhythms are wonderful – completely infectious, and often with some complicated twists that really keeps things interesting – and the album's got the kind of upbeat, joyous groove you'd definitely expect from the title. Tracks include "Everybody's Dancin", "Dancin' Shoes", "Big Chief's Funkum", "I Like Music" "It's All You Need", "Peace To The Universe", and "At The Party". CD

Imperial, Late 50s. Sealed ... $24.99
Raw New Orleans soul from Overton "Smiley" Lewis – one of the city's big stars in the 50s R&B years, and a singer who arguably set the stage for later deep soul to come! A few years before, and Lewis might have been more of a blues singer – but here, he's working with some strong Nola piano lines and lightly loping rhythms – in a mode that's vaguely in the Fats Domino side of the universe, but a lot more raw and stripped-down too – from the performance to the production! Tracks include Smiley's classic "I Hear You Knocking", plus loads of other nice ones – including "Bumpity Bump", "Bells Are Ringing", "Blue Monday", "Lost Weekend", "Real Gone Lover", and "One Night". All tracks here feature the girls in the same territory as Barry from the time – with backings from the fuller Love Unlimited Orchestra, and a groove that's made up wonderfully from vamping rhythms, electric keyboards, and soaring strings – all moving together at a pace that's surprisingly clear and clean, despite the size of the entourage! Love, Peace, & HappinessHere 'Tis ... CD
RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". The first-ever full length set we've seen from Daniel Maunick – an artist who you might know from his remix work as Venom, or for his ties to the Incognito universe – given that Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick is his father! Yet the sound here is definitely Daniel's own – rootsier than some of his remix work, but with the feature future-sounding elements of those tracks too – almost a globe's worth of sonic elements, fused with more contemporary keyboards and beats – providing a great bridge between some of the 12" releases of the Far Out label, and directions they might take in the future. The percussion on some tracks is especially nice – and maybe ties Daniel's music to some of the global house currents at the start of this century – on titles that include "Sombra Do Dragao", "Until The End", "A Vicious Circle", "One Nite Stand", "Red Doves", "Orbitus", "As Light Fades", and "Amnesia Haze". A masterpiece of spiritual sounds from Japanese drummer Takahashi Miyasaka – one of those sublime 70s records that really carries the Coltrane legacy forward, and finds a whole new channel of inspiration in the universe! The group is led by Miyasaka, but features fantastic horn work from Koichi Matsukaze on alto and tenor, Genji Sawai on soprano and alto, and Hiroshi Itaya on trombone – the last of whom has a wonderfully distinct voice, with these crisp, concise notes that really make the record shine! Pianist Hiromachi Tsugaki is wonderful too – a player we don't know at all, but who ranks right up there with the best Japanese pianists of the decade – and bassist Kagehiro Ohba has a spacious stepping sound that really keeps things in line. Roger Troutman had a very big hand in the record, lending the group some very Zapp-ish touches in their grooves – a great blend for the catchy vocals of the group, in ways that even have the mellow cuts bouncing along nicely! The basslines are tight, but never overdone – and the record's got a real sense of class and timing that takes it way past some of the overly-familiar sides of the Troutman universe. Oregon had already reached greater fame by the time of the record's issue in 1980 – but you can easily hear the fullness of their vision here, right at the start – the unusual blend of world elements and jazz – served up in a pre-ECM universe by Ralph Towner on guitars, piano, and mellophone; Paul McCandless on oboe and English Horn; Glen Moore on bass and flute; and Collin Walcott on tablas, sitar, 12 string guitar, percussion, and esraj. The songs are maybe a bit more spacious and shorter than later years, but the group's sound is very firmly in place – on titles that include "Jade Vision", "Margueritte", "Canyon Song", "Full Circle", "Collin's Delite", and "Aheer". Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". Archie SheppThings Have Got To Change/Cry Of My People ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1971/1972. New Copy ... $9.99
A pair of Impulse Records classics from Archie Shepp! Things Have Got To Change is wonderful post-Paris work from Archie Shepp – a record that has him bringing more focus back into his work after sessions overseas – and also making some great use of the legendary Joe Lee Wilson on vocals! There's a feeling here that's a real change for Shepp, but a great one too – a sound that's trying to reach new levels of expression in jazz – with a bit less of the sharp edges of the 60s, and more of the warmer, more righteous modes of the post-Coltrane generation. Wilson's vocals really help Shepp achieve those aims – by adding a lyrical balance to the tunes, and imbuing them with additional messages beyond the instrumentation – especially on the extended suite "Money Blues", which takes up all of side one. Also important is Cal Massey, who composed two of the tracks on the set, and also plays electric piano alongside Shepp in a spare duet on the beautiful "Dr King The Peaceful Warrior". Other players include Grachan Moncur and Charles Greenlee on trombones, Billy Butler on guitar, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Ted Daniels on trumpet – and Romulus Franceschini adds some electronic music on "Things Have Got To Change". Cry Of My People is one of the most righteous albums ever from Archie Shepp – a beautiful late Impulse set of grooves, and a record that matches the genius of Attica Blues! Shepp's working with a losse collective of players that includes Charles Greenlee, Harold Mabern, and Beaver Harris – plus vocalists like Joe Lee Wilson and Peggie Blue – all to craft a set of tunes that are as righteous and political as they are spiritual and soulful! The great Cal Massey handled arrangements on a number of the tracks on the set – bringing together the players with a wonderfully unified feel, pushing away the easy spirituality of earlier records to forge a massively powerful sound – and Shepp matches his great efforts by blowing some of his most soulful lines on record! Titles include the wonderful "African Drum Suite (parts 1 & 2)", plus "A Prayer", "Cry Of My People", "The Lady", "All God's Children Got A Home In The Universe", and "Rest Enough". CD

A killer collection of contemporary soul – served up in a way that really understands what makes classic soul music so great, then finds a way to provide a similar vibe from music that's new! And by that, we don't mean that the music is retro, or old-sounding at all – just that it's got the right balance of righteous energy, warm grooves, and all-out joy that we love in some of the older music that we first started loving from both Soul Togetherness and Expansion Records – a great team when it comes to finding the best of the best of the contemporary underground soul universe! Titles include "What Turns You On" by Lukas Setto, "Giving It Up" by Terri Green Project, "Thirty One" by Laville, "Tell Me" by Solatimsic, "When I Get Back" by Tre Williams, "Good Life (ext)" by Rockie Robbins, "Need Somebody To Love" by TL Shider, "Still Really Love" by Magoo, "All My Life (long version)" by Steve Doc Willoughby, "You & Me (R&B version)" by Glenn Jones, "Make It Last Forever" by Steal Vybe with Alexa Gold, and "Need To Know" by Raheem DeVaughn & Jamecia Bennett. An obscure jazzy group from the New Zealand scene of the early 70s – definitely a rock act at the core, but one who make wonderful use of flute and tenor from Andrew Stevens, who really helps give the record a special sound of its own! There's also some vibes, Indian percussion, and other unique instrumentation in the set – mixed with guitars that are as acoustic as they are electric, giving the whole thing a quality that's almost in the folk funk side of the universe – dreamy one minute, groovy the next, and the kind of record that's well worth seeking out as a unique rarity! Titles include "Da Woiks", "I Sit Alone", "Which Way Confusion", "Through My Window", "Learning Bout Living", and "Those Days Are Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the greatest moment ever from Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins – a key part of the George Clinton P-Funk universe in the 70s – finally getting a chance to step out on his own! Haskins arranged and produced the set – with a bit of arranging help from Bernie Worrell – and tunes are more guitar-heavy than George Clinton's work of the time, and maybe a bit trippier too – with plenty of the funky workouts you'd expect, mixed up with some other more offbeat tracks as well! The whole thing has a nice trippy soul feel – with titles that kind of sum the whole thing up: "Mr Junk Man", "Cookie Jar", "Tangerine Green", "The Fuz & Da Boog", "Sometimes I Rock & Roll", and "I'll Be Loving You". An early classic from the great Raphy Leavitt – one of the leading underground lights of the 70s salsa scene, especially if you get away from the Fania/Tico side of the universe! There's a strong sense of soul to the record right from the start – one that comes more from the delivery of the lyrics, and some of the bluer notes in the instrumentation – never that uncommon compared to the rest of the scene, but delivered with this gritty sensibility that almost takes us back to Spanish Harlem days. Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set that's brimming over with improvising jazz talent – but one that's an especially great reminder of the guitar genius of the great Arto Lindsay! Lindsay is amazing here – playing with energy to match the brilliance of Ken Vandermark and Joe McPhee – which is really saying a lot, and which has us almost feeling like a younger version of Arto's self stepped forward straight from the New York no wave scene, in order to create a pan-historical bridge with the improvising strengths of the Corbett Vs Dempsey universe! Drummer Phil Sudderberg is wonderful too – a master of sounds and moments – and the short tracks allow for plenty of sharp changes, and shifts in energy between each selection. McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket trumpet – and Vandermark is on tenor, baritone, and clarinet – on titles that include "The Push & Pull Beneath The Surface", "She Must Have Known", "Whether You Were There Or Not", "When I Lose Any Sense Of Perspective", and "The World's Longest Afternoon". A lost slice of work from Sun Ra's early 70s years on Impulse Records – one of the few new recordings created for his association with that label (most of the titles were reissues of earlier Saturn albums) – but one that was never issued at the time! Cymbals saw some release later, during the 90s – but this package really expands on that album by adding in a whole extra set of recordings from what appear to be the same sessions – and which really flesh out the vibe of the performance! The core group is a sextet – with Ra at the helm on some of his cool electric keyboards – including minimoog, rocksichord, and Gibson Kalamazoo – with acoustic work from Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet, Tal Ebah on trumpet, Ronny Boykins on bass, Harry Ar on drums, and Derek Morris on congas. Much of the core music explores a tension between Ra's cosmic keys and the more earthy sound of the acoustic instruments – but the added material here opens up some nicely different moods, and makes the whole thing explode with deep colors. Titles on Cymbals include "Land Of The Day Star", "Thoughts Under A Dark Blue Light", "The Mystery Of Two", and "The World Of The Invisible" – and added tracks include "Space Landing", "Of Drastic Measures", "Of Otherness", "The Universe Is Calling", and "Destination Of The Known Universe". The second major label set from The Roots, and what many consider their first and definitely not their last) irrefutable classic! The return of the great ones – and quite possibly the funkiest album ever from The Sugarman Three – a crowning achievement for this funky combo that we've loved for years! The core trio is still in place – soaring Hammond, tight tenor, and heavy drums – but they've also added in some extra help from the Daptone universe – which helps the group hit an ultra-funky sound here – one that's sharp-edged, no-nonsense, and a wicked blend of soul jazz and late 60s funk! There's still plenty of standout tenor solos from Neal Sugarman, and wicked organ lines from Adam Scone – but there's also a bit of added trumpet, and great Bosco Mann basslines – which really give the whole thing a heavy punch. The groove is much more stripped-down and hard-edged than the Dap-Kings – and burns with a fire that never lets up for a minute – proof that in a world of funky revival combos, some of the older act still do it best! The record is soulful, and has a lot of contemporary cosmic currents – but it's also more far-reaching and fluid than anything that Thundercat's ever given us before – still done with key help from Flying Lotus, but with a majestic, confident quality that seems to have the duo ready to take over the universe! The airy soulful vocals are great, but the rhythms and instrumentation are maybe even more compelling – as there's a number of tunes here that are almost impossible to describe in words, even though they're instantly appealing and wonderfully soulful – a balance that's the sort of special genius from an artist who's ready to write himself into the pop music history books with a key release like this. There's a whole host of guests – including Ty Dolla Sign, Childish Gambino, Louis Cole, Kamasi Washington, Badbadnotgood, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, and many others – but it's clear that the Thundercat/Flying Lotus axis holds all the power – on titles that include "Fair Chance", "Funny Thing", "How Sway", "Miguel's Happy Dance", "Lost In Space/Great Scott/22-26", "Interstellar Love", "Overseas", "Dragonball Durag", "King Of The Hill", and "Existential Dread". The "Brian" in the title is Brian Eno – as you might guess from that image from Another Green World in the middle of the cover – but the sound of this set is quite different than what you might expect! CD1 imagines the sounds that Eno would talk about informing the music of his youth – tracks that showed up often on jukeboxes stocked to service visiting American GIs, which meant that the were full of raw soul, R&B, and even a bit of jazz – elements that most folks wouldn't tie to Eno, but which you can definitely hear here in arranging and production elements that would show up on his early solo vocal music, and some of the Roxy Music sounds too. Titles include work by The Tokens, Paradons, Lafayettes, Little Willie John, Dinah Washington, Ernie K Doe, Raymond Scott, The Cosmic Rays, Moondog, and Leadbelly. CD2 features more modern moments – a mix of avant jazz, early electronics, and 20th century compositions that tie a more direct link to the ambient universe – titles that include "Dream" by John Cage, "Come Back To Earth With Me" by Louis & Bebe Barron, "Atmospheres (excerpt)" by Gyorgy Ligeti, "Sleepy Time" by Raymond Scott, "Fordommelse" by Elsa Marie Pade, "Rhythmic Variations 1" by Daphne Oram, "Low Speed (excerpt)" by Otto Lueninng, "Ignition" by Tom Dissevelt, "Ectoplasm" by Raymond Scott, and "The Bewitched (Scene 1)" by Harry Partcy. Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. There's vocals at points, often processed too – and the whole thing is maybe in the farther reachs of the Swell Maps side of the universe – that sense of sonic free play between that group's more direct sounds, served up here with an equal amount of darkness. Jocelyn's got this round, firm tone throughout – balanced with the boldness of pianist Addison Frei – whose work here is equally great, and kind of fills things up around the sides while Gould comes straight down the middle – driven on nicely by the bass of George DeLancey and drums of Quincy Davis – all in modes that really feel a lot different than most other guitar quartet albums, even though these guys aren't trying to do any thing too fancy or gimmicky. The sound here is even funkier and more guitar-based than before – a fully-realized take on the Norman Whitfield modes that had been brewing up since his late 60s work with The Temptations – almost as tripped-out at times as early 70s Funkadelic – as if Undisputed Truth were being put forth as a Detroit challenge to the George Clinton universe! Production and arrangements are great – very far-reaching at times, with some bigger ideas in the mix – although all the tight funky soul elements that always made these guys so great. Titles include "1990", "Squeeze Me Tease Me", "Earthquake Snake", "Spaced Out", "Lil Red Ridin Hood", "Got To Get Me Some Lovin", and the great cut "UFO's". Higher Than High is a great later Motown effort from the Undisputed Truth – working in a groove that's a bit tighter and more upbeat than before, but still plenty darn great! Norman Whitfield is still very firmly in charge of the group's sound on the record – arranging, producing, and writing most of the cuts on the album – and he's doing a great job of keeping his sound fresh here – not just sticking in the bass-heavy styles of previous years, and instead moving into some fresher territory that has the group continuing to grow nicely. In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the grooves to come on Norman's own Whitfield label – a great batch of well-crafted titles that include "Overload", "Higher Than High", "Poontang", "I Saw YOu When You Met Her", "Help Yourself (second version)", "I'm In The Red Zone", "Boogie Bump Boogie", and "Ma". ✨✧ Citrus SunExpansions & Visions ... CD
Dome (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from the jazzier side of the Incognito universe – work from the excellent Citrus Sun project of Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – done with some of the soulful vocal modes of his famous group, but also a lot stronger focus on the instrumentation – with plenty of room for solos, and maybe the use of vocals that you'd find on an old album by The Crusaders! Matt Cooper provides some excellent keyboards – and the set features vocal appearances from Noel McKoy, Valerie Ettiene, Deborah Bond, and Bluey himself – on titles that include nice remakes of "California Soul" and "Expansions" – plus the originals "Diamond In The Sun", "Amando O Velho Mundo", "Hard Boiled", "Hey Now", and "Stay You" – the last of which is a tribute to Leon Ware! ✨✧ Ruth CopelandI Am What I Am (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Invictus/Demon (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A second sublime set from Ruth Copeland – a funky female singer from the Detroit scene of the early 70s, with key ties to the P-Funk universe, and a unique groove that mixes singer/songwriter modes with the fuzzier funkier elements of artists like Betty Davis or Yvonne Fair! There's a bit more emphasis on soul here than the funk of Copeland's previous efforts – but in a way that makes for an even more impressive record overall, especially when you realize that Ruth arranged and produced the whole thing. George Clinton and Eddie Hazel both had a hand in co-writing songs with Copeland – and instrumentation features Hazel on guitar, plus Bernie Worrell on piano – so there's still a key P-Funk link. Titles include the breakbeat track "Suburban Family Lament", the fuzzy stoner funk number "Don't You Wish You Had", and covers of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire" – plus "Crying Has Made Me Stronger", "Hare Krishna", and "The Medal". ✨✧ Johnnie FriersonHave You Been Good To Yourself ... CD
Light In The Attic, Early 90s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Raw and riveting gospel-folk-soul from Johnnie Frierson – only ever issued as a self-released cassette before this vital re-discovery by Light In The Attic! Johnnie is one of the vital, though relatively unknown voices in the Stax/Volt universe, working with a his sister Wendy Rene and in the group The Drapels in the late 60s, before going to Viet Nam and being pretty quite in the proceeding years. The songs Have You Been Good To Yourself and raw and direct, but anything but simple – just voice and guitar, but carrying such a depth of feeling. Truly wonderful stuff! Includes "Have You Been Good To Yourself", "Heavenly Father, You've Been Good", "Miracles", "Out Here On Your Word", "You Were Sent To This World", "Woke Up This Morning" and "Trust In The Lord". CD

✨✧ Jay DeeCome On In Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant lost record from the Barry White side of the 70s soul universe – the one and only album issued by Jay Dee, and a set that's every bit as great as other White side projects with artists like Tom Brock, Danny Pearson, and Gloria Scott! Like all of those, the soulful maestro is very heavily involved here – producing, arranging, and writing most of the tracks – and giving the whole thing that funky soul strings approach he was using with his own wonderful music of the period – which makes for some especially sweet tracks that mix deep soul vocals with kind of a blacksploitation groove! The whole thing's great – and titles include the killer "Strange Funky Games & Things" – which has become a funk and sample classic over the years – plus "Jay's Theme", "Com On In Love", "Thinking Of You", "I Can't Let You Go", and "I Can Feel Your Love Slipping Away". CD features two bonus tracks – single and instrumental versions of "Strange Funky Games & Things". CD

A really great take on the Vince Guaraldi Christmas classic – one of the saddest tunes in the whole Peanuts animated universe, and one of the best! The Khruangbin trio take the whole thing at a slow funky pace – using lots of echo on the guitar that states the melody with a raspy lead, while the group sings in a moody way in the background! The sound of tomorrow, coming to you today – thanks to this excellent Future Bubblers series on Brownswood Records! The series is something of an offshoot of the longer-running Brownswood Bubblers – which has turned us onto great new music for many years – and the "future" side of this project is really well-placed, as many of these artists are younger London talents who are just getting their start – but seem destined for the kind of soulful contributions we've always loved from Gilles Peterson and his side of the universe. Verve, 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Ledisi – a singer we've dug for many many years – and who always lives up to our faith in her music! We first dug Ledisi as an underground talent back in the 90s – but with this Verve album she's poised to take on all the best that mainstream soul has to offer – hitting strongly with a sense of pride and power that we've never heard this clearly before! We're not saying that Ledisi's getting commercial – just that she's got this tight, powerful, rich quality to her music that is bound to finally push the singer out to the wide audience she really deserves – new ears to add to Ledisi's always-growing audience of fans from the farther reaches of the soul universe.
