Diepkloof United VoiceHarmonizing Soweto – Golden City Gospel & Kasi Soul From The New South Africa (orange color vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ostinato (UK), 2023. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99 26.99
A group with a name that might not easily roll of the tongue, but one who've got a sublime harmony sound that's wonderfully fluid overall – a combination of nine young voices from the scene in Soweto, working without any other instrumentation at all! The combination of vocals almost takes us back to the sound of Take 6 on their first album – and as with that group, the message here is spiritual, but not entirely pointed at the church – with much more of a universal appeal that's perfect for the subtly righteous power of the harmonies! Titles include "Too Late For Mama", "Nomalizo", "My Brother", "Who Knows", "Sip", and "Baninzi". LP, Vinyl record album

Enja (Germany), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and Danilo Perez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. Titles include "Kush", "Tanga", "Dizzy Shells", "Night In Tunisia", "Tin Tin Deo", "Seresta", and "Samba For Carmen". CD

✨✧ Dorothy Moskowitz & The United States Of AlchemyUnder An Endless Sky ... CD
Tompkins Square, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record that's as beautiful and ethereal as the image on its cover – a collaboration between singer Dorothy Moskowitz and composer Francesco Paolo Paladino – served up in a mode that almost mixes the darker corners of Nico's solo work with some of the spacier tones of the early new age underground, and maybe a touch of Laurie Anderson performativity as well! Moskowitz was originally part of the famous United States Of America group of the late 60s with Joseph Byrd – but she's clearly transformed a lot as an artist here, and works with lyrics by Luca Chino Ferrari, but often in ways that are less word-based than you might expect. Instrumentation includes keyboards, harp, and bells from Paladino, plus light strings, guitar, electronics, and guitar – all in a spacey blend that comes off especially well on the 23 minute "Under An Endless Sky", and still sounds great on shorter cuts that include "My Doomsday Serenade", "The Disappearance Of Fireflies", "Cut The Roots", and "Unknown To Ourselves". Elmer BernsteinWorld Of Henry Orient – Music From The United Artists Motion Picture ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1964. Used ... $14.99 19.99
A surprisingly sweet soundtrack – scored by Elmer Bernstein for this slightly madcap 60s film that starred Peter Sellers as a concert pianist! The main theme has a light melody that dips and turns nicely – redone in a number of variations on the soundtrack, with shifting instrumentation that occasionally veers into some of Sellers' orchestral settings. Overall, the style is much in keeping with Bernstein's best of the 60s – a bit less dramatic and turgid, with some warmer numbers that sweeten things up. Titles include "Mansfield", "The Switch", "Arrest", "Watching Waiting", "Tuning/Concerto", "Splitzing", "Sick Joke", and "Coffee With Henry". CD

Garnet MimmsLooking For You – The Complete United Artists & Veep Singles ... CD
Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 18.99
One of our favorite soul singers of the 60s – represented here in a collection that includes both sides of all of his singles for the United Artists and Veep labels – including a fair bit of tracks that have never been on CD before! Garnet Mimms is really something special – a singer who's got a deep soul sort of range to his vocals, but who can also work in a mode that's a bit sweet soul too – often blended with east coast arrangements that start out very spare at the beginning of the collection, then get increasingly groovy as things move on! If you've never heard Mimms before, you're in for a lifelong treat – and even if you've been a fan as long as we have, you'll really appreciate the track selection and overall presentation of the material. Titles include "One Girl", "I'll Make It Up To You", "Prove It To Me", "My Baby", "Keep On Smilin", "The Truth Hurts", "As Long As I Have You", "Tell Me Baby", "So Close", "Welcome Home", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Don't Change Your Heart", and the tremendous "Thinkin" – one of our favorite soul tracks ever! The title structure hear hearkens back to some of the anagram puns that Fela Kuti used to twist the political knife back in the day – and Olumo Soundz have definitely inherited some of the spirit of that scene! Yet the group also have a different sort of vibe, in part because a number of players come from the Swedish jazz scene – most famously keyboardist Roman Andren, an artist we always love on his own record, and one whose warmth really sets the tone here! There's plenty of horns, lots of percussion, and mighty long tracks – all topped by vocals from Positive Olumo, on titles that include "UN (United Nonsense)", "Sunday Jump", "Wahala Dey Come", and "Chasin". Horace Silver at his most righteous – stepping out here in the amazing Phase 2 of his United States Of The Mind series – with some heavy vocals from the great Andy Bey! The grooves are more complicated than Silver was laying down a few years before – yet still equally soulful – and in addition to vocals by Bey, and his sister Salome, the group also features Silver on electric piano, plus Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet & fluegelhorn, Harold Vick on tenor sax, and Bob Cranshaw on bass, Richie Resnicoff on guitar and Mickey Roker on drums – a sweet little combo who really open up with a hip, righteous groove! The titles probably give more information about the tracks than we ever could, and include "Acid, Pot, Or Pills", "Soul Searchin", "What Kind Of Animal Am I", "I've Had A Little Talk", and "Big Business". Seminal sounds from the LA scene of the late 40s – one of the most important records to showcase the tenor talents of the legendary Wardell Gray – a key player on the harder side of the west coast for its formative bop years – and one whose career was cut short all too soon! The material here really shows that strong LA tradition of fervent jam session work – recorded here with Gray alongside additional tenor from Vido Musso – plus guitar from Barney Kessel and Irving Ashby, trumpet from Ernie Royal and Howard McGhee, trombone from Vic Dickenson, piano from Arnold Ross and Erroll Garner, and bass from Red Callender and Harry Babison. Keyboardist Julius Brockington really takes off here – in a style that's not quite funk, not quite jazz – and which has some of the unique sophisticated changes that Gene Harris was bringing to his Blue Note records in the mid 70s! Like Gene, Julius already has a strong background on the keys – and here, he's able to open up and create all sorts of new rhythms in his music – working on organ, piano, and even a bit of Arp – in a combo that features Steve Turner on alto and flute, Jim Wilson on trumpet, and Garry Langston on guitar! The vibe is great – sophisticated, but funky too – and very unusual compared to other albums of the time. All the material is original – and titles include "Gettin' Into It", "Lost Tribe", "Jaded Jackie", and "In the Back of the Churchyard". CD

Producer Pappy Daily frames the inherent sorrow, boozy slur and sly pug attitude of The Possum's voice with near-perfect waltz pattern backdrops, laid down by session legends like Pig Robbins, Grady Martin and Billy Strange – along with effective, ghostly choruses by The Jordanaires. Kay Dee, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early 70s ensemble funk from Mugo – a DC group made up of students from McKinley Tech High School – combining tightly energetic, fairly sprawling instrumentation and soulful vocals – a number of unreleased tracks from the sessions that also produced their rare 70s single, newly mixed by Kenny Dope for the Kay Dee label! The school band vibe really kind of comes into play via the uncommon mix of instruments, and that works really, really well – B-3, Rhodes and Korg synthesizer provide for some spacier touches, while flute and piano also find room in the group's sound alongside the funky drums, guitar and bass – with feverish vocals and some killer instrumental passages. The performances are inventively strong, too – it doesn't sound like a bunch a kids, that's for sure! We we flipped over the single Kay Dee put out of the group, and we're all the more ecstatic over the great LP! Includes "Change", "Organized (Kenny Dope Edit)", "Space Traveler", "I Love Music", "How Time Fly's", "All About Love", "Love Has Gone", "Sing A Song" and "Water". CD

US Army/Now Again, 1972. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. John Barry/Elephant's Memory/The Groop/NilssonMidnight Cowboy – Original Motion Picture Score ... CD
United Artists/EMI, 1969. Used ... $8.99
A sublime soundtrack from John Barry – common, to be sure, but also a wonderfully-crafted set that goes way beyond the stereotypes of his work for the James Bond films! The record is probably best known for Nilsson's famous version of the Fred Neil tune "Everybody's Talkin" – which is great in itself – but it's Barry's own work on the title theme that we totally love. "Midnight Cowboy" is a darkly turning slowly pondering tune that will haunt us until the day we die – performed here on the original number with a sad-tinged harmonica that unites both the country of Joe Buck's roots and the sleaze of the love generation. The tune's great – and is matched here by the whimsy of "Florida Fantasy", and the Barry tracks "Fun City" and "Science Fiction". But also, Barry acted as the overall music director for the film – and used some tracks from the hip group Elephant's Memory, plus others by The Groop – but offbeat acts who really fit the spirit of the film. The record's almost worth it just for the cut "Old Man Willow", a really tripped-out longer track from Elephant's Memory – swirling around in organ and hippie vocals, and oddly echoing the main Barry theme of the set at times! Bernstein's music of the 50s is all just about as perfect as you can get for soundtrack scoring – and like some of his other classics, the music here works wonderfully well away from the images on screen – quite vivid overall, with an illustrative quality that's really amazing – lots of moody moments, tense action, and haunting themes – a perfect companion to Man With The Golden Arm or Some Came Running. United Artists/Lemon (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... $45.99 49.99
A massive set, and one that features way more material than this legendary group released back in the day – all the full albums from Brinsley Schwarz, plus unissued studio material and other rarities too! The group were named after their guitarist, Brinsley Schwarz – but the group also featured key work from a young Nick Lowe, sounding wonderful here before going out as a solo act – and, with Schwarz, really helping to craft that smaller group, pub rock-styled approach that was such a strong antidote to prog and classic rock excesses of the period! There's a very down to earth vibe on many of these cuts – not entirely the roots rock of the US scene, but not far off – and also already echoing some of that tunefulness that Lowe would continue in his own recordings and productions – almost a secret evolution of a mod aesthetic, but hidden amidst other 70s trappings. Maybe we're pitching it wrong – but the records don't lie, and have plenty to tell here – full albums Brinsley Schwarz, Despite It All, Silver Pistol, Nervous On The Road, Please Don't Ever Change, The New Favourites Of Brinsley Schwarz, and It's All Over Now – plus dozens of bonus tracks, both live and studio – including work as The Brinsleys, The Hitters, and Limelight. 132 tracks on 7CDs, with very detailed notes! A mid 70s set from Can that's still very much in the best spirit of their earliest work – mostly longish tracks and all quite hypnotic – wonderful stuff from the team of Irmin Schmidt, Jacki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay, and Michael Karoli. Sure, Damo's not on vocals any more, but the instrumentation's still pretty darn great – and Can is also working more explicitly established global genre elements, but still really sounds like no one other than Can. Cornelius Brothers & Sister RoseCornelius Brothers & Sister Rose ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A wonderful album from this enigmatic soul group! Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose were one of a handful of early 70s groups – like Chairmen Of The Board or 100 Proof Aged In Soul – who had a sound that was incredibly hard to peg. There were bits of southern rawness in the vocals, but the overall approach also had plenty of elements of smoother Northern Soul, and wasn't afraid to use strings or uptown arrangements when they were needed. This album's their best, and features 10 tracks written by Eddie Cornelius, plus a great little cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together". Tracks include the sublime easy soul number "Too Late To Turn Back Now", choppy odd groover "Treat Her Like A Lady", and the cuts "Gonna Be Sweet For You", "Let Me Down Easy", and "Lift Your Love Higher". Les DeMerleTranscendental Watusi ... LP
United National/P-Vine (Japan), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 39.99
A great companion album to the Les DeMerle Concerts By The Sea record – every bit as funky as that one, and for good reason too – as this set was recorded at exactly the same time! The package offers up the legendary drummer in a sweet 70s setup – great Fender Rhodes and Clavinet in the group from Ramsey Embick, who works perfectly with the dynamic drums of the leader – plus the great Don Menza on tenor, soprano, and flute – always a great musician on a record like this! There's some added congas in the group, the bass is electric, and the whole thing kicks nicely – on titles that include "Daggerpoint", "In Transit", "Transcendental Watusi", "Ear Food", "Manfred 8", and "Once Upon A Time". Kenny DorhamMatador (Douglas pressing) ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A brilliant album from trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a set that's maybe a bit less-known than some of his records for Blue Note, but a set that shares a lot with those classics – as it's got that similar mix of larger compositional structures and more open solo moments! Kenny's own playing is tremendous, and the rest of the group is wonderful – a unique lineup with Jackie McLean on alto, Bobby Timmons on piano, Teddy Smith on bass, and JC Moses on drums – all working with Kenny in a slightly Latin tinged mode that features some really shimmering trumpet work! The record features a stunning three part reading of McLean's haunting tune "Melanie" (done under his name on the album A Fickle Sonance) – plus the tracks "Prelude", "El Matador", "Smile", and "There Goes My Heart". United Artists/Octave (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Soaring grooves and mellow moments – a perfect blend of 70s soul styles, summed up here beautifully by Enchantment! The album's one of the group's greatest – and certainly one that's been very well-remembered around these parts – thanks to some rock-solid arrangements from Johnny Allen, who almost brings an indie soul vibe to the whole set – while still putting the whole thing together at a totally top-shelf level too! The harmonies are wonderful – especially on the ballads, like "Gloria" and "Sunshine" – and other tracks include "Sexy Lady", "Come On & Ride", "Thank You Girl For Loving Me", and "Dance To The Music". Mobile Fidelity/United Artists, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $39.99
A legendary set from the team of guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans – both already wonderful players on their own, but really hitting a magical sort of space here together! The record is a classic in understatement – the inevitable meeting of two players who'd both made a career out of saying more with less – and both Evans and Hall manage to make this special sort of sound when working together in such a space – spare, but never short on ideas – filled with color and tone, but never overdone. The tracks are long and dreamy, and the piano/guitar lines seem to float in the air, suspended on naught but idea and imagination. Titles include a very nice version of "Skating In Central Park", plus "Dream Gypsy", "Romain", and "Darn That Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite moments in the strong run of records from Family – a set that's still strongly defined by the vocals and songwriting of Roger Chapman, but which also has a lot more going on as well! John Wetton's joined the group for this album, and adds in bass and a bit of vocals – and seems to really jump start their sound in a great way – and the production is great, too – really opening up with some of those new styles that were helping change the UK scene as progressive acts found a way to pack more into a smaller space – resulting in shorter tunes that still bristled with plenty of excitement! The vocal interplay is especially great – and titles include "Between Blue & Me", "Spanish Tide", "Burning Bridges", "Take Your Partners", "Crinkly Grin", "Larf & Sing", "Save Some For Thee", and "Satdy Barfly". United Artists/Esoteric (UK), 1973. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
The final studio album from Family, and a set that really has the group coming down strongly on all the best elements they crafted together on previous records! The vocals of Roger Chapman, as always, are a real charm – some of the most distinct of his generation, and perfectly at home in rootsier modes and more hard rocking passages – which are balanced out nicely on the record, and given a lean push forward with great guitars and keyboards – but never in a style that's too polished or commercial. In fact, given the lack of huge chart success for the group – at least on our side of the ocean – it's a strong testament to the quality of their work that they kept on going this strongly. Titles include the instrumental "Banger", plus "Sweet Desiree", "Suspicion", "Leroy", "Buffet Tea For Two", "Boom Bang", and "It's Only A Movie". 2CD edition features lots of bonus tracks – the single cuts "Drink To You" and "Stop This Car" – and early versions of "Boom Bang", "Suspicion", and "Stop This Car" – plus 14 more live tracks all recorded for the BBC in 1973! A rare Latin outing from trumpeter Art Farmer – one that has him working with the mighty Cuban arranger Chico O'Farrill! The grooves here are hardly "Aztec", as Chico brings a hip postwar vibe to the session – a blend of American jazz and Latin rhythms that's totally great, and played by an all-star array of players conducted by Al Cohn! Side one of the record features the extended "Aztec Suite" – an ambitious number that begins with modern moments that are somewhere in a space between Stan Kenton and Ralph Burns' experiments of this nature, but which always has Farmer's trumpet as the center focus. Side two features tracks that are a bit more conventional Latin jazz – still played by the bigger group, but with an even stronger sense of swing! Classic early 70s space rock from Hawkwind – mixing punchy, fuzzy aggression with trippy post psych soundscapes – with less keyboard-heavy prog noodling and tighter vibe! Early recordings by John Lee Hooker and his Coast To Coast Blues Band – recorded in Detroit in the late 40s through the early 50s. The Coast To Coast Blues Band may be a little misleading in the title, as the recordings find Hooker with only the sparest accompaniment on bass, drums, and guitar if any accompaniment at all – but it's the good kind of misleading, because you don't want anything getting in the way of the foot stomping, soulful blues vibe of John Lee Hooker on these early cuts! Anytime-Anytime-Anywhere is filled with that spare, intimate John Lee Hooker blues sound that came to represent so much of the the inner city gin joints of the era – on titles that include "Come Back Baby", "Forgive Me", "Street Is Filled With Women", "Moon Is Rising", "Turnin' Gray Blues", "Lord Taketh My Baby Away", "Throw This Old Dog A Bone", and "Welfare Blues". United Artists, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99 14.99
A pair of early records from Hour Glass – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Hour Glass album – fantastic early work from Gregg And Duane Allman – a set that's nothing at all like their Allman Brothers material, but which has a wonderful style nonetheless! At some level, there's a very strong soul current running through the music – as the group mix in songs by Curtis Mayfield, Deon Jackson, and others with some headier rock material – all set up in these arrangements by Dallas Smith that seem to begin in uptown soul, then push things into more psychedelic territory! The blend is great, and makes for a really wonderful record – on titles that include "I've Been Trying", "No Easy Way Down", "Out Of The Night", "Nothing But Tears", "Heartbeat", and "Silently". Power Of Love is an excellent second set from Hour Glass – the pre-Allman Brothers Band that featured both Duane and Gregg Allman, the latter of whom is really coming into his own on the record! Unlike the group's debut, this one features a lot more original material by Gregg – and guitars that start to crackle in that sweetly cresting style that would become the group's hallmark, and which would have an undeniable influence on the sound of rock in the 70s. At some level, the whole thing's an early southern effort to answer the sounds of the Bay Area scene – and comes off beautifully, thanks to titles that include "To Things Before", "I'm Not Afraid", "Home For The Summer", "Down In Texas", "Now Is The Time", and "Going Nowhere". One of the greatest soundtracks ever – an archetypal album from French composer Francis Lai, and a record that set the tone for countless other imitations to come – yet which is still the best! The groove here is really unique – a spare blend of bossa influences, jazzy organ lines, and wordless vocals that are sung beautifully by French singers Nicole Croisille and Pierre Barouh – and although a mainstream success, the record was the initial force behind the legendary Saravah imprint that Barouh would form later, to record a wide range of groundbreaking work in a variety of genres. But history aside, the music here is plenty – and from the very first note the whole soundtrack grabs you with a sense of warmth and sentiment that defy description – modes never heard before in the soundtrack world, and which really broke the mold from Hollywood conventions! United Artists/El (UK), 1960. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Quite possibly the only full album ever recorded as a solo act by Dave Lambert, the vocalist that we know and love from the team of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but who's also a heck of a great singer on his own! As you may know from the group, Dave's got a slightly quirky vocal approach that warbles with the honesty of a good horn solo – a style that we might rank next to Bob Dorough's in its appeal, except for the fact that Dave, like his fellow members in the trio, has a much greater jazz-based quality – and on some of the tunes here, he improvises wonderfully and inflects the tunes in really unique ways. Players on the album aren't credited, but it sounds like it's probably Gildo Mahones on piano backing Dave up – and titles include 2 great wordless numbers titled "Blues" and "Short Blues Around The Broadway Bridge" – plus the tunes "Over The Weekend", "Autumn Nocturne", "All Alone", "Yesterdays", and "We Could Make Such Beautiful Music". Evolution Of The Blues, an early concept album from the great Jon Hendricks – one that tells the story of blues through jazz – all put together as a flowing story in music! Jon speaks and sings the whole tale – but also gets some help on vocals from Big Miller, Hanna Dean, and Jimmy Witherspoon – as well as great musical backing from the core Ike Isaac Trio, with solos by Pony Poindexter and Ben Webster! The music is mostly rooted in blues, but with a hipper jazz sensibility – almost in the way that Oscar Brown Jr and others were going back to the roots, but updating them for the 60s. Titles include "WPA Blues", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "New Orleans", "If I Had My Share", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". CD

An overlooked solo set from Deke Leonard – once a member of the group Man, out here on his own in a very unusual, very specific sort of style! The guitar work is every bit as sharp as Leonard's work with Man, but the music moves through a range of older influences and more personal moments – almost pub rock with glam production – although again, that's maybe too general to get at the really specific spirit of the record! Leonard's a surprisingly strong talent – and the record's one of the many that fell through the cracks back in the day, but which clearly gets great handling by a big label, with well-deserved hope for a superstar. Great stuff – recorded in Mingus' classic period! Mingus leads a sharp small group here – a wonderful quintet that features Booker Ervin on tenor, John Handy on alto, and Richard Wyands on piano – with longtime musical partner Dannie Richmond on drums! The session was recorded live at the Nonagon Gallery in New York, and has that sort of arch-modernist groove that was Mingus' hallmark in these key late 50's years. Ervin, as always, is amazing, and John Handy, who makes his recording debut here, demonstrates the genius that Mingus had for spotting brilliant young players as he plays with the sort of imagination and intensity that he only ever managed to hit again on one or two of his own records as a leader. German drummer Klaus Weiss started out in more conventional jazz during the 60s – but as the 70s moved in, he really found his groove – and opened up strongly in styles that were funky, spiritual, and sometimes hard to define! That latter is definitely the case here – as Weiss leads his group Niagara through some amazing side-long jams – an all-percussion session that does an amazing job of creating criss-crossing elements of rhythm and melody throughout! The approach is maybe a bit like some of the shifting energy of a Brazilian batucada ensemble, but a bit tighter and more jazz-based at times – and the whole thing's wonderful, a definite funky classic – with two long jams titled "Sangandongo" and "Malanga". Nitty Gritty Dirt BandWill The Circle Be Unbroken ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... $19.99
A legendary 3LP set – core work by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, with help from many others who make the record great – including Mother Maybele Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff! The whole thing feels a lot more like a traditional bluegrass album than you'd expect – comes off beautifully at a level the group would never hit again! LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s cloudburst label pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has light ring wear, faint stain in the lower corner, light wear on spine.)

Nurse With WoundSylvie & Babs Hi Fi Companion – The Sounds Of A Sensation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Dairies/Dirtier Promotions (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 18.99
One of the weirdest, wildest albums ever from Nurse With Wound – and a set that's completely different than most of their other material too! The album's got a feel that really lives up to the cover – sort of a parody of 50s lounge music, filtered through the sensibility of mid 80s British industrial – which means that the sounds come from an array of different elements – including original records, old tapes, live performance, and lots of electronics and production twists – which really abstract all the elements into this mad sort of bachelor pad nightmare! There's still plenty of the noise we love in NWW, but also a surprising sense of humor – not one that goes for easy jokes, but which like Current 93 at this point, is really beginning to find its aesthetic and hone its skills. The bulk of the record features the maddening "You Walrus Hurt The One You Love" – and the rest is "Great Balls Of Fur", billed as the last performance of Murray Fontana! Great 2CD version features a whole bonus disc of rare materials recorded at the same time – including "Elderly Man River", "Chicken In Drag", "Yoko's Anniversary", "It Just Ain't So", and "Excerpt From Pricksongs". Bill PottsJazz Soul Of Porgy & Bess ... CD
United Artists/Capitol, 1959. Used ... $4.99
A stone cooker – and one of the best versions of Porgy & Bess recorded in a jazz format! It's a slightly-forgotten fact that at the time of the big late 50s film version of Porgy & Bess, there was a bit of trouble with the soundtrack – so the market was flooded with other versions of Gershwin's score in a hope to fill the void. This is one of the best of that bunch – a very well-done set of tunes arranged and conducted by Bill Potts, recorded with a strong set of soloists that include Al Cohn, Gene Quill, Zoot Sims, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Charlie Shavers, Bob Brookmeyer, and Harry Edison. Tracks are the usual batch of Porgy & Bess numbers – "I Loves You Porgy", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "My Man's Gone Now", "A Woman Is A Sometimes Thing", "Summertime" – all woven together wonderfully in a rich tapestry of sound, with some particularly evocative solos. Mark RadiceAin't Nothin But A Party ... LP
United Artists, 1976. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Mainstream funk tracks with a bit of a disco twist – featuring lots of keyboards upfront, and popping basslines in the bacground. Brass Construction appear to be giving Radice a hand on the album – and the record sounds a lot like some of their work from the time, although with less horns. The worst part of the record is Radice's vocals – which are kind of in a white boy funk mode – but the instrumentation isn't bad, and most tracks are long enough to have long instrumental passages. Titles include "Monky See Monky Do", "If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em", and "Here I Go Fallin In Love Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Rae's Afro Jazz SeptetHerbie Mann's African Suite ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Very Good ... $19.99 23.99
A confusing title, but a wonderful little record! The album's as much a Herbie Mann Latin session as it is a record by Johnny Rae – which is probably why the album's titled as such – and the group on the set features Rae on vibes, Herbie on flute, Jack Six on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums, Bobby Corwin on piano, and Jose Mangual, Patato Valdes, and Victor Pantoja on an assortment of Latin and African percussion. The groove is tremendous – Latinized jazz, but with a real tension between the heavy percussion on the bottom and the ligher flute and vibes on the top – especially on the album's more tribal, African-styled numbers. The "suite" features 7 tracks in all – 5 composed by Herbie ("Sorimao", "Beouin", "Sudan", "Ekunda", "Guinean"), plus a version of Sonny Rollins' "St Thomas", and the track "Jungle Fantasy" by Noro Morales. LP, Vinyl record album
(Great early pressing – red label with deep groove! Cover has very light wear in one corner, but looks great overall. Vinyl is nice and clean.)

Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Phil WoodsJazz Alive – A Night At The Half Note ... LP
United Artists, 1959. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
Alive, and plenty lively – one of our favorite albums ever to feature the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – and one that has them really stretching out a lot more than usual! The album's got a format that's quite different than the tightly-reigned sound of Sims and Cohn on other dates – as all the four tracks here run for longer than nine minutes – really allowing lots of room for solo space – and some great interplay between the reedmen too! Phil Woods joins the twin tenors on alto for two tracks – and the rest of the group features Mose Allison on piano, Nabil Totah on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. Titles include "Lover Come Back To Me", "It Had To Be You", and "Wee Dot". LP, Vinyl record album
(Non-gatefold Japanese pressing, with obi – LBJ 60057. A great copy!)
