✨✧ Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". Sandra AlexandraWarm & Wild ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Very nice pop soul session, with production by Calvin Carter, and a sound that's similar to some of the Capitol LA soul sessions from the late 60s. Sandra sings in an easy loungey voice, and covers tracks like "Wedding Bell Blues", "She Will Break Your Heart", and "Ooh Baby I Love You" – but with a hipper sound than you might expect. The set also includes a nice version of "Hold On, I'm Comin", with a good solid groove in the intro – and we should also mention that Sandra plays all the piano on the record! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has ring & edge wear, two cutout holes, and some marker and a small piece of tape on back.)

Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... CD
Uni/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... $7.99
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. CD

A great near-lost slice of Betty Everett's career – material recorded for Uni Records, in the years after her first big hits on Vee Jay! The sound here is a lot more soulful than on earlier albums – more grown-up and sophisticated, yet also retaining the best sweeter touches that made her great in the first place. A classic! This is one of the best soul albums ever to come out of Chicago, and it's a really great blend of the Jerry Butler "iceman" style (very big in Chi-town) and the deeper soul sound of the west side. Elton John11-17-70 ... LP
Uni, 1971. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A wonderful early record from Elton John – recorded live in the studio, and with a freer, more open vibe than some of his other albums! The approach is wonderful – and really showcases that sort of special spirit that Elton was creating with the group – but at a grittier level that maybe even ties the whole sound even more strongly to his American inspirations. Titles include a very long version of "Burn Down The Mission" – plus "Bad Side Of The Moon", "Take Me To The Pilot", "Sixty Years On", "Can I Put You On", and "Honky Tonk Women". A great little record that's waiting to be re-discovered! The album quickly tanked as the over-pressed soundtrack to an under-viewed film – but despite years in cutout bins, it's got a fresh quality that we really treasure! About half the album features cool instrumental tunes from Mike Leander – scored in that weird mix of touches that he was using in his "rock to easy" years – and these cuts are interspersed with vocal numbers by Paul Jones, sung in a dramatic style that's a bit Bowie, but with more blue eyed soul. Titles include "Free Me", "It's Overotherness Time", "I'm Alright Jackboot", "I've Been A Bad Bad Boy", and "Stephen". LP, Vinyl record album

Love UnlimitedFrom A Girl's Point Of View ... LP
Uni/Mercury, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Great stuff – the beginning of the Love Unlimited dynasty! As we're sure you know, Barry White produced this little gem of a record, and the album was a key proving ground for many of his stone cold soul production ideas before he went off and started doing the lead vocals himself. The White genius is very firmly in place – and is fantastic here mixed with female lead vocals – with this strong current of soul at the bottom, sweeping strings on the top, and a surprisingly badass sound that really makes the record different than most other girl group records. The trio of lovelies that makes up Love Unlimited do a perfect job with Barry's arrangements – singing heavenly harmonies on tracks like "If This World Were Mine", "Is It Really True Boy – Is It Really Me", and the stunning "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", which has one of the best telephone monologues you'll ever hear on a soul track! Uni, 1971. Very Good+ ... $24.99
This is one of Mort Garson's craziest moog records ever, or as the label says: "Moog Goes Supernatural with Eerie Electronics". Ostensibly a satanic sort of thing, this is actually a wild cool mix of moog and early synthesizer effects, over a bunch of original compositions with no sorts of "hokey" arrangments. Very noisy in parts, and pretty growly with cool cool sounds. Did you expect anything less from Mr. Mort? Titles include "Exorcism", "ESP", "Witch Trial", "Solomon's Ring", and "Black Mass". MirettesWhirlpool ... LP
Uni, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $8.99
A killer heavy soul album by this under-recorded soul combo! The Mirettes were a storming girl group from the late 60s, and their sound was a lot heavier than a lot of the sweeter girl groups from earlier years. The girls have a mix of southern deep soul vocals with some more northern-oriented harmonies – and they kind of feel like a cross between the Sweet Inspirations and the Lovelites, with a bit more funk thrown into the mix. This rare album is one of the only two they ever cut – apart from a few tracks that appeared on the Lost Man soundtrack (also on Uni) – and it's also their best. The record was produced by Clarence Paul, Ernie Shelby, and Dick Cooper – who also wrote most of the songs for the group. Titles include "I Miss You Baby", "If Everybody'd Help Somebody", "Heart Full of Gladness", "Ain't You Tryin' To Cross Over", and "Sister Watch Yourself". LP, Vinyl record album

Uni, 1969. Sealed ... $29.99
One of our favorite 60s surf soundtracks ever – an amazing blend of Stu Phillips orchestrations with some key vocal moments from the trio of Dino Desi & Billy! The album's got a wonderful theme – "Thru Spray Colored Glasses" – sung initially by the trio, then served up by Stu in a number of variations that change with the different exotic locales of the film – India, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Morocco – all referenced slightly in the instrumentation, but in ways that always retain Phillips' grooviest inspirations! Strings blend with bits of harpsichord, vibes, voices, Spanish guitar, and these "watery" woodwinds that almost remind us of Australian jazz in the same period – and titles include "Thru Spray Colored Glasses", "Big Wave Bay", "Incinerator", "Ranee Express", "Nazare", and "Cascis". Double dose of heavy soul by this under-recorded late 60s combo – originally known as The Ikettes before splitting with Ike Turner and becoming The Mirettes! They're a truly storming group, with a sound that's a lot heavier than a lot of the sweeter girl groups from earlier years. The girls have a mix of southern deep soul vocals with some other more northern-oriented harmonies – and they kind of feel like a cross between the Sweet Inspirations and the Lovelites, with a bit more funk thrown into the mix. The feel on In The Midnight Hour is also hard and southern – almost like the best Memphis work by the Emotions, or some of the more obscure female groups on Stax/Volt. Fantastic sunshine pop from the Strawberry Alarm Clock – an album that's a bit trippy, a lot sunny – and just the right mix of psych and harmony soul! There's some wonderful overlooked nuggets on the record – tunes that go past their chart hits, and which really remind us that the group was definitely a cut above most of their contemporaries – with these edges and surprises that really keep things interesting. The mighty George Tipton helped arrange some of the best cuts – and titles include the massive "Barefoot In Baltimore" – a perfect bridge between the earlier 60s harmony sounds, and the headier mode of the later generation – as well as the tracks "Sea Shell", "Lady Of The Lake", "A Million Smiles Away", "Shallow Impressions", and "Eulogy". ✨✧ Cal Tjader & Eddie PalmieriEl Sonido Nuevo ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – but here, teamed up with Eddie Palmieri, his music gets a great New York infusion – and one that's even a bit more contemporary than some of Tjader's previous 60s Latin efforts. Eddie's sharp-edged piano is totally great – ringing out with some especially bold tones – and other players on the set include Julian Priester and Mark Weinstein on trombones, Ismael Quintana on percussion, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, and George Castro on flute. Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

ESP, 1964. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. ✨✧ Art BlakeyNight In Tunisia (Blue Note) ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of a number of Art Blakey albums titled after "Night In Tunisia" – and most likely the best! The tune is a perfect fit for the Blakey Jazz Messengers format – long, rhythmic, really stretching out, yet allowing plenty of space for the horn players to solo. Players include Bobby Timmons on piano, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a killer lineup that's in really classic form here – driven on nicely by Blakey's drums and bass work by Jymie Merritt. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", with Blakey thundering through impeccably – plus the tracks "Yama", "Kozo's Waltz", and a version of Timmons' great "So Tired". CD

BlazeKeep Hope Alive – Blaze Presents Underground Dance Artists United For Life (expanded 2CD version) ... CD
Susu (UK), 2004. Used 2CD ... $9.99
An incredibly majestic project – and a record that matches its mighty spirit with an equally great set of grooves! Blaze put together the album to benefit the Lifebeat AIDS charity – and they've got help from a tremendous assemblage of underground club talents – including Barbara Tucker, Ultra Nate, Arnold Jarvis, Byron Stingly, Joi Cardwell, Michell Weeks, and others – all working with Blaze as Underground Dance Artists United For Life! The set kicks off with the anthemic "Keep Hope Alive" track – done in ensemble fashion, almost like the classic Philly All Stars recording of the 70s. That cut resurfaces throughout the set, as individual artists step forth with key tracks of their own as well – so that the album features a few takes on the "Keep Hope Alive" theme, plus cuts that include "We Are One" by Blaze, "Spread Love" by Byron Stingily, "Most Precious Love" by Barbara Tucker, "Hiya Luv" by Kenny Bobien, "Be Yourself" by Joi Cardwell, "A Wonderful Place" by Ultra Nate, and "Make The Time" by Arnold Jarvis. Plus, expanded package features a bonus CD with 8 more tracks – including "Not Far Away (Shrine voc mix)" by Blaze, "What Makes The World Go Round" by Stephanie Cooke, "Hiya Luv (Phil Hooton rmx)" by Kenny Bobien, "A Wonderful Place (Fanatix rmx)" by Ultra Nate, "Make The Time (extended)" by Arnold Jarvis, and "Keep Hope Alive (Shrine voc mix)". A slow-grooving boogie number from Junior Byron – one that's got a catchy sort of back/forth rhythm, which Junior uses to nice advantage with his swinging vocals on the tune! Joey DefrancescoIn The Key Of The Universe ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A spiritual surprise – and a record that we really didn't expect! Joey DeFrancesco's really got a great edge this time around, thanks in part to some incredibly strong saxophone work on the album from Troy Roberts and the legendary Pharoah Sanders! We'll be honest in saying that we first saw Pharoah's name on the cover, and were marveling at his sounds when the soprano sax came in on the first track – but then we picked up the record, and realized that Roberts handles most of the saxophone on the first half of the record – and we were further blown away by his combination with Joey's work on the organ! DeFrancesco really seems to be on fire here – maybe driven by Troy's strong edge, which is a sublime pairing – and the duo get some equally wonderful drums from Billy Hart, who keeps things moving all the way through – as the album soars to the skies, in a way we're not use to hearing from Joey. Sanders comes in as the album hits the halfway mark, and lends his tremendous tenor to three very spiritual tunes – and Sammy Figueroa also plays a bit of percussion on some tracks as well. Titles include "Soul Perspective", "Awake & Blissed", "In The Key Of The Universe", "Inner Being", "Vibrations In Blue", "And So It Is", and a remake of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". CD

The tracks here are a perfect balance of Dolphy in his final year – with some spiritual jazz currents, but still a strong sense of swing – with a fantastic lineup that includes Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, Clifford Jordan on soprano, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and both JC Moses and Charles Moffett on drums – almost a who's-who of people who would go onto shape the face of jazz in years to come. Titles include "A Personal Statement", "Ode To Charlie Parker", "Iron Man", "Come Sunday", "Burning Spear", "Muses For Richard Davis", "Alone Together", "Love Me", and "Jitterbug Waltz" – plus a number of other different versions of tunes. 3CD set comes with a 100 page booklet – featuring photos, essays, and interviews with Sonny Simmons, Sonny Rollins, Nicole Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and David Murray. Dennis Dreith BandReunion ... LP
Everland (Austria), 2018. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
A contemporary album, but one that's got the feel of a funky big band session from years back – no surprise, as Dennis Dreith and many of these players brought plenty of that magic to the LA scene back in the day! The style here hearkens towards some of the MPS or US albums of the style from the 70s – with mostly acoustic elements from the horns, held together by rhythms from electric bass, drums, and keyboards – all to forge sharp ensemble passages that step aside for a bit when the soloist comes in – yet all still while nicely holding onto the groove. The charts are great – full of color and light – and soloists include Andy Macintosh on alto, Ron King and Dan Fornero on trumpet, Gary Herbig on tenor, and John Goux on guitar. A light and sweet little score by George Duning – penned for this early 60s comedy that starred Sophia Loren and Cary Grant! The album's got a great vocal number – "Bing Bang Bong" – sung by Loren with DeVol orchestrations – and just the right sort of catchy 60s film number that often gets lost in the shuffle of time, due to studio contractual issues. The rest of the music moves from sweet themes to jazzier numbers – the latter of which are pretty great and upbeat, although played by an uncredited group. Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $22.99
The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Jim FordBig Mouth USA – The Unissued Paramount Album ... CD
Paramount/Bear Family (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A heck of a great record from Jim Ford – an early 70s country outsider whose early work hardly got any circulation at the time – but who's managed to go on to become the stuff of legend over the years! This set's got Jim at his best – maybe sounding even more country than on his two Capitol Records sessions, with slightly fuller production – but still that very individual, very distinct way of songwriting and putting over a tune – a quality that sparkles strongly on the album's batch of all-original material by Ford. A few tracks are reworks of numbers done on his unreleased second session for Capitol, taken in a very different way – and the whole thing has an offbeat vibe that's in the best left-of-Nashville mode of the early 70s. Titles include "He Turns My Radio On", "Family Tree", "Mixed Green", "I Call Her Baby", "Rising Sign", "Which Way", "If I Go Country", and "If There's A Will There's A Way". CD

Fantastic soul duets between Marvin & Tammi Terrell – a landmark pair in 60s soul music, and easily one of the best male/female duos in pop music ever! Marvin and Tammi have a way of singing together that makes you feel like they're speaking the tunes, not singing them – a personal, intimate quality that's almost as if we're sneaking in on them behind closed doors – and not hearing their voices cast out in front of full backing in the Motown studios. Even when the tunes are familiar, they're still bracingly emotive – Includes stone classics like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "If I Could Build My World Around You", plus "Hold Me Oh My Darling", "Somethin Stupid", "You Got What It Takes", and "If This World Were Mine". Domino Sound, Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
Beautiful sounds from the short-lived musical legacy of Salum Abdallah and his Cuban Marimba Band – a group from Tanzania, but one who play with lots of influence from Latin Music – as you might guess from their name! And yet, unlike some of the larger, fuller Latin-influenced groups that were springing up on the West African scene of the 60s, this combo has a sound that's pretty stripped-down – often just heavy percussion and work on guitar – which appears to be a unique hybrid of the Cuban style of the instrument, which gets plucked and inflected in great ways next to the vocals! The well-done set might be the best we've seen so far from the Domino Sound label – and features tracks that include "Njoo Haraka", "Naumiya", "Cuba Cha Cha", "Kutenda Maovu", "Ngoma Iko Huku", "Macho Laini", "Masikitiko", and "Asiye Bahati Duniani". A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". ✨✧ Barbara AcklinSeven Days Of Night ... LP
Brunswick, 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
An excellent second album by Barbara Acklin – and a perfect demonstration of her really unique Chicago soul talents! Acklin's really at the cusp of two generations here – at one level still with some of the sweetness of the earlier style of 60s girl soul, but at another full of the power and pride that was really flowing into other artists of the 70s – a balance that's a great summation of the unique way that Chicago artists could play both ends of the spectrum, and come up with something really unique in the process! The album includes the great cut "Am I The Same Girl", a loping soul groover that was all set to be a big single for Barbara – but for some reason, Brunswick held the tape back, stripped off the vocals, put on some piano, and released it as the instrumental "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited at the same time! Yet we still dig Barbara's version better, though – nestled here alongside other great cuts that include "Seven Days of Night", "A Raggedy Ride", "Go With Love", "Mr Sunshine", "Until You Return", and "Where Would I Go". American Jazz Classics, 1958. Used ... $6.99
A set that's right on target, right from the start – and one that has the young Cannonball Adderley really coming into his groove! The set's a lot more soul jazz-oriented than some of Cannon's records from a few years before – played by a rock-solid group that includes brother Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – hitting a groove that's got plenty of nascent elements of that Cannonball sound that would virtually take over jazz in the 60s! Yet there's also a nicely different vibe going on here too – a bit less structure, and a looser approach to the mode – spun out with some modern moments too, on titles that include "Straight No Chaser", "Jubilation", "Our Delight", "Fuller Bop Man", and "Stay On It". As a bonus, the CD also includes tracks from Machito's Kenya, featuring Cannonball! CD

A sweet little set – one that brings together some of the grooviest cuts ever recorded by Japanese singer Yasuko Agawa – one of the leading lights of the overseas scene at the end of the 70s! Toshiko Akioshi makes a trip back to the Japanese jazz scene in the early 60s – for this great little session that has her meeting up with "old pals" from previous years – including Sadao Watanabe on alto sax, Akira Miyazawa on tenor, and Hideo Shiraki on drums! The reunion is a really great one – just the kind of session that stands out as special in the careers of all artists involved – especially Toshiko, who seems to have hit a new level of maturity in her work! The style here is essentially hardbop, but brought together with some well-penned head arrangements that hint at the more sophisticated directions Akikoshi would take in her later years – yet still preserve all the boppish spontaneity of her youth. The set's on a par with the best on Blue Note or Impulse in the US at the time – and is key proof that at the right moments, the Japanese jazz scene of the early 60s was really something to rave about! Titles include "Quebec", "Old Pals", "Watasu No Biethovin", "So What", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandToshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band Live At Newport 77 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $24.99
A fantastic live performance from this legendary ensemble – and a record that brings a nice sort of edge to the group's already great sound! It's a bit hard to describe – but somehow the live recording quality seems to create more intensity, maybe more urgency to the way the group emotionally communicates – maybe partly just the echo and open space of the recording, but also maybe the way the group seems to open up with a fresh on-the-spot energy. In addition to Toshiko Akiyoshi on piano and Lew Tabackin on reeds, the lineup features saxes from Beverly Darke, Dick Spencer, Gary Foster, and Gary Herbig; trombones from Bill Reichenbach, Charlie Loper, Phil Teele, and Rick Culver; and trumpets from Bobby Shew, Mike Price, Richard Cooper, and Steven Huffstetter. Titles include the always-great "Warning Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health" – plus "Road Time Shuffle", "March Of The Tadpoles", and "Strive For Jive". CD

Aksak MaboulUn Peu De L'Ame Des Bandits (with bonus CD) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 18.98
One of our favorite mixing of modes from the old school – a tremendous second album from the legendary Aksak Maboul! The record mixes arty playfulness with some rootsier elements – bits of Eastern instrumentation, jazz, improvisation, and even some post-punk elements – all in a way that makes for one of the most creative recordings of its time – a set that easily provides key inspiration for more recent genre-crossing acts like this! There's a bit of Y or Ze Records whimsy at times – but the end result is much deeper, and much more compelling– as you'd expect from a group that features Fred Frith on guitar, Chris Cutler on drums, Marc Hollander and Michel Berkmans on reeds, and Denis Van Hecke on a range of cool cellos! Each tune has a slightly different flavor, but there's still a really unified feel to the record too – one of those European projects that comes together like nothing you'd hear from the US. Titles include "Geistige Nacht", "A Modern Lesson", "Palmiers En Pots" and "Cinema". LP, Vinyl record album

AkwassaIn The Groove ... CD
Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99
An interesting turning point for this funky Nigerian group of the 70s – as the set's still got the chunky rhythms of previous efforts, but also shows a touch of influence from reggae on some of the grooves – as well as some very cool use of keyboard touches that give the whole thing some nice electric currents! The sound is still nice and raw overall, and some of the best cuts have a straight funk approach that's really universal – grooves of the sort that you'd hear on an American funky 45, but maybe produced with that compelling sense of echo that makes so many west African records from the time sound a bit trippy. Vocals are in English throughout, and titles include "Everybody's Getting On", "Give Me Some Funk", "Jam All Night", "Make Your Self", "We Believe In Peace", and "No One Else". CD

Harold AlexanderRaw Root ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good ... $16.99
A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Lorez AlexandriaEarly in the Morning/Deep Roots (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1960/1962. Used ... $12.99
Early In The Morning, a gem – right up there with her best work ever! An excellent early album by one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time! The session's a very hip affair – recorded with the Ramsey Lewis Trio backing her up on one side, and a group led by Frank Foster on another – both playing in a tight soul jazz mode that works perfectly for Lorez's great voice, and which takes her way past the straighter style of the King recordings. Includes a version of Louis Jordan's "Early In The Morning", plus "So Long", "Don't Explain", "Baby Don't You Cry", and "Rocks In My Bed". The groove's very deep, like hearing Lorez in a smoky club on the south side of Chicago! Deep Roots is a perfect summation of her rich talents as a singer! Backing is by a small Chicago trio that includes John Young on piano, Vernel Fournier on drums, and George Eskridge on bass – but the arrangements of the tracks, and Lorez's unique interpretations drive the tunes into territory that's surprisingly advanced for the 1962 date of the session. You'll recognize most of the tunes – but as the old adage goes, it's not the song, but the singer – and you'll hear Lorez crafting a rich tapestry of sound and emotion from titles like "No Moon At All", "I Was A Fool", "Detour Ahead", "Travlin Light", and "I Want To Talk About You". Rashied Ali QuintetJudgement Day Vol 2 ... CD
Survival, 2006. Used ... $8.99
Excellent later work from drummer Rashied Ali – a bit more straightforward than some of his vintage work on the Survival label, but still every bit as righteous! The group here is super-tight – a lineup that features soaring tenor from Lawrence Clark, bold piano from Greg Murphy, and strong trumpet lines from Jumaane Smith – all players who really get equal time in the spotlight under Ali's leadership – clearly a respectful, well-unified group – and one that's also held together nicely by the bass work of Joris Teepe. The set's overflowing with soulful power and emotion – lifted high by some great original compositions by group members, too. Titles on this second volume include "Judgment Day", "Flight 643", "Yesterday Tomorrow", "Multi Culti", and "Thing For Joe". CD
