Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". Big BlackBig Black & The Blues ... LP
Uni, 1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Not your typical blues, despite the title – and a set that's got a nice mix of folk and funk influences running through the tunes! The overall style is certainly more bluesy than other records by Big Black – in that it features a bit less percussion and a lot more vocals – often on original compositions that are sung in a style that's earthily soulful. There's almost echoes of Terry Callier in the mix, but the overall sound is a lot more rootsy – and titles include "MM Baby", "People are Talkin'", "I Sat and Moan", "Coal Black Eyes", and "Shu-Be-Du". Love UnlimitedFrom A Girl's Point Of View ... LP
Uni/Mercury, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 24.99
Great stuff – the beginning of the Love Unlimited dynasty! As we're sure you know, Barry White produced this little gem of a record, and the album was a key proving ground for many of his stone cold soul production ideas before he went off and started doing the lead vocals himself. The White genius is very firmly in place – and is fantastic here mixed with female lead vocals – with this strong current of soul at the bottom, sweeping strings on the top, and a surprisingly badass sound that really makes the record different than most other girl group records. The trio of lovelies that makes up Love Unlimited do a perfect job with Barry's arrangements – singing heavenly harmonies on tracks like "If This World Were Mine", "Is It Really True Boy – Is It Really Me", and the stunning "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", which has one of the best telephone monologues you'll ever hear on a soul track! Stu Phillips/Dino Desi & BillyFollow Me ... LP
Uni, 1969. Sealed ... $22.99
One of our favorite 60s surf soundtracks ever – an amazing blend of Stu Phillips orchestrations with some key vocal moments from the trio of Dino Desi & Billy! The album's got a wonderful theme – "Thru Spray Colored Glasses" – sung initially by the trio, then served up by Stu in a number of variations that change with the different exotic locales of the film – India, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Morocco – all referenced slightly in the instrumentation, but in ways that always retain Phillips' grooviest inspirations! Strings blend with bits of harpsichord, vibes, voices, Spanish guitar, and these "watery" woodwinds that almost remind us of Australian jazz in the same period – and titles include "Thru Spray Colored Glasses", "Big Wave Bay", "Incinerator", "Ranee Express", "Nazare", and "Cascis". A great near-lost slice of Betty Everett's career – material recorded for Uni Records, in the years after her first big hits on Vee Jay! The sound here is a lot more soulful than on earlier albums – more grown-up and sophisticated, yet also retaining the best sweeter touches that made her great in the first place. Larry CarltonWith A Little Help From My Friends/Singing Playing ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1973. New Copy ... $13.99
Two early gems from guitarist Larry Carlton – back to back on a single CD! First up is the Uni album With A Little Help From My Friends – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't You Care", "Mac Arthur Park", "Odd Couple", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Monday Monday". Next is Singing/Playing, and the title's no lie – as Larry Carlton steps out in a warmly-produced session that's got a really sweet LA studio vibe – one that mixes together early fusion backings and compressed vocalizations – in a way that maybe makes the whole thing feel like an overlooked A&M Records gem from the Nick DeCaro years! Larry's got this easygoing vocal style that's very down to earth, and set up in these sweet arrangements directed by Stewart Levine – soulful, jazzy, and with occasional currents of funk – and with some great keyboard touches from MIchael Omartin next to Larry's guitar and vocals. Titles include the great "American Family", plus "Wavin & Smilin", "Easy Evil", "Free Way", "Captain Captain", and "With Respect To Coltrane". CD

Garland GreenHe Didn't Know (He Kept On Talking)/Please Come Home ... 7-inch
Spring, 1973. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Garland Green's always great to our ears – and these two sides are mighty nice! Both cuts were recorded with Brad Shapiro, the genius of southern soul who was bringing a lot of modern touches to the genre in the early 70s. The sound and style is a lot mellower than Garland's work on Uni – very laidback, with a warm and bubbly finish that works well with his vocals – especially on "Please Come Home"! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Garland GreenVery Best Of Garland Green – 24 Tracks From Chicago's Master Soul Singer's Illustrious Career ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A windy city hero – the amazing Garland Green, a singer who makes us mighty proud we hail from Chicago! Garland's got an incredible style that few others can touch – partly schooled in the 60s iceman modes of Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson, with all the sophistication that might imply – but also often given a raspier twist, with slightly southern echoes that make Garland's music feel even more deeply personal! And while most folks know Green's big hits for the Uni label, this package shows a rich legacy that goes much father than that – work recorded for labels that include Cotillion, Spring, RCA, Ocean Front, and Revue – in addition to some key Uni tracks. This trans-label set really does a wonderful job of showing the full range of Garland's mighty talents – a sublime set of soul cuts that run from the start of the 70s right up to the early 80s modern years – packaged with detailed notes too. Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "These Arms", "Just Loving You", "Just My Way Of Loving You", "He Didn't Know", "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy", "Love's Calling", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", "Sweet Loving Woman", "Ask Me What You Want", "You Played On A Player", "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", and "Sending My Best Wishes". Buddah, 1968. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The group's first full album from 1968 – and a set that's often dismissed as bubblegum pop, but which has a heck of a lot to offer! The sound here is a wonderful blend of psyche influences and sunnier pop elements – swirled up with a bit of strings, styled in the same catchy territory as The Strawberry Alarm Clock or some of the other groovy groups on Uni. Vocals are lightly playful, often with a sing-song quality, but with occasional rougher edges – almost like Lovin Spoonful – and titles include the hit "Green Tambourine", plus "Shoeshine Boy", "Rice Is Nice", "Fifty Year Void", "Through With You", "Blueberry Blue", and "The Shoemaker Of Leatherwear Square". ✨✧ Cal Tjader & Eddie PalmieriEl Sonido Nuevo ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – but here, teamed up with Eddie Palmieri, his music gets a great New York infusion – and one that's even a bit more contemporary than some of Tjader's previous 60s Latin efforts. Eddie's sharp-edged piano is totally great – ringing out with some especially bold tones – and other players on the set include Julian Priester and Mark Weinstein on trombones, Ismael Quintana on percussion, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, and George Castro on flute. Arrangements are by Eddie and Claus Ogerman – and titles include "Los Jibaros", "Ritmo Uni", "Picadillo", "Unidos", "El Sonido Nuevo", and "Guajira En Azul". ESP, 1964. New Copy ... $12.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". 50th Anniversary Edition – also includes the bonus track "Vibrations". Experimental vocals and offbeat reed sounds – a really great pairing of singer Uschi Bruning and reedman Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky! We know Ernst-Ludwig and Uschi from a range of other projects, but they really sound different here together – especially because Petrowsky's reeds are often trying to emulate the modes and timing of Bruning's vocals – which themselves are very free and horn-like in their expression – quite far from any sort of usual jazz vocals! The whole record's given us a great deal more respect for Uschi, and opens our ears even further to the genius of Ernst-Ludwig – thanks to tracks that include "Lonely Woman", "Sax Shop", "Kontraste", "Bandblatt", "Das Ding", "Skizzen", and "Duellarando". ✨✧ Junior BylesBeat Down Babylon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Tremendous work from Junior Byles – a singer with a sweet voice that would have been right at home in the rocksteady years, but which is maybe even more powerful here in a roots session produced by Lee Scratch Perry! That special Perry magic really helps balance things out with Junior's vocals – a raspy edge in the rhythms that reminds us of the deeper qualities of the lyrics – echoed by Byles as he uses his personal soul to enforce their ideas – following a shift in Jamaican music that's similar to the Marvin Gaye shift at the start of the 70s! Titles include "I've Got A Feeling", "Don't Know Why", "Coming Again", "Beat Down Babylon", "A Place Called Africa", and "Poor Chubby". 2CD set features an insane number of bonus tracks – 41 more numbers in all, pulled from singles and other recordings – with titles that include "Curley Locks", "Dreader Locks", "Militant Rock", "Fun & Games", "Motion Dub", "Ungrateful Skank", "Rasta No Pick Pocket", "Come Da Da", "Righteous Oily", "King Of Babylon", "Africa Stand", and "Rub Up Festival 71". Trojan (UK), 1970s. Used ... $26.99
Like so many vocalists, Junior Byles shone brightest under the guidance of Lee Perry, and this excellent retrospective collects more than just a few of the great Jamaican soul sides he'd cut under his production. All of these numbers have the spare loping groove, with nice organ lines and bouncing bass that were the hallmark of Scratch's early 70's work, laced with Byles' great roots vocals over top. 23 tracks in all, including "I've Got A Feeling", "Don't Know Why", "Coming Home", "Beat Down Babylon", "A Place Called Africa", "Poor Chubby", "Hail To Power", "Fever", "When Will Better Come", "Curly Locks" and "Dreader Locks". A slow-grooving boogie number from Junior Byron – one that's got a catchy sort of back/forth rhythm, which Junior uses to nice advantage with his swinging vocals on the tune! The version brings up the riffing guitar in the rhythms, in a way that's even cooler than the original mix – and the single also features a sweet long megamix that seems to percolate all the best elements together in a nicely extended groove! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". The legendary unreleased Motown recordings by The Contours – material that should have been issued as a full length LP in 1964 – but all but a couple tunes have languished in the vaults until now! The group simply kills on on these dancefloor ready stormers, with raucous, charismatic lead vocals and tight harmony backup – on a set of numbers that were no doubt ready and set to slay live audiences. We're sure The Contours were unbeatable live, but these recordings really should have made it out at the time. Better late than never, to say the very least! A beautiful set of hipster jazz vocals! This legendary album by Pittsburgh pianist Frank Cunimondo has always been a favorite for the jazz-dance groover "Feelin Good" – a cut which has an incredible drum and bass riff, and which has been sampled more than a few times over the past few years. But even above that track, the whole album's pretty darn great – and it features an excellent set of vocals by the lovely Lynn Marino, a very unique vocalist with a sweet style that's sort of like Blossom Dearie. The whole album's got a lovely light groove, with some heavy rolling piano lines from Frank, tight rhythm backing by the trio, and a great sweet sound from Lynn. A real treasure, and impossible to find on the original vinyl. Titles include "Beyond The Clouds", "Pretty Pretty", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Love So Fine", "A House Is Not A Home", and the incredible "Feelin Good"! CD

Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 28.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagitarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Karl Denson's Tiny UniverseBrother's Keeper ... CD
Shanachie, 2009. Used ... $6.99
Karl Denson's come a long way here since his earlier funk sides from years back – and for the record, his tiny universe gets expanded nicely by the addition of Meshell Ndegeocello on bass! The groove here is rich and full – almost a late 60s funky soul approach – but harder than we're used to hearing from Denson, with some especially nice drums at the bottom, which keep things quite raw, even when the songs are slightly sweetened up – and Meshell's basslines are definitely a great component of the set, as most tunes bump along with a groove that's strongly directed up from the bottom! Lead vocals are by Denson, who also plays sax and flute – and titles include "Shake It Out", "Where It Counts", "Brother's Keeper (parts 1 & 2)", "Monica", "Expressions", "Empty Soul", "Just Got Paid", "Take It Down", "Mighty Rebel", and "The Drums Of War". A fantastic package that finally gives these recordings their proper due – one that takes the cuts that were issued on the albums Iron Man and Conversations (plus a million cheapo packages over the years) – and restores them to their original mono, right from the tapes – then adds in 85 more minutes of never issued material! The tracks here are a perfect balance of Dolphy in his final year – with some spiritual jazz currents, but still a strong sense of swing – with a fantastic lineup that includes Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, Clifford Jordan on soprano, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and both JC Moses and Charles Moffett on drums – almost a who's-who of people who would go onto shape the face of jazz in years to come. Titles include "A Personal Statement", "Ode To Charlie Parker", "Iron Man", "Come Sunday", "Burning Spear", "Muses For Richard Davis", "Alone Together", "Love Me", and "Jitterbug Waltz" – plus a number of other different versions of tunes. 3CD set comes with a 100 page booklet – featuring photos, essays, and interviews with Sonny Simmons, Sonny Rollins, Nicole Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and David Murray. Blue Note, 1961/1963. Used ... $11.99
Hard wailing! Poppa Lou's caught right at the height of his early Blue Note powers here – recorded in 2 different groups on this set of unreleased sessions from the early 60s! Both sets have Lou in a guitar/organ soul jazz setting – with backing by Grant Green on guitar, and either Jack McDuff or John Patton on organ. The McDuff set features the great Joe Dukes on drums, and the session sparkles like one of McDuff's best Prestige albums from the time. The other session has the classic Patton/Green lineup augmented by trumpeter Irwin Stokes, a lesser-known talent who really opens up the sound nicely. There's a total of 9 tracks in all – a number of them ballads, but done with a lively soulful tone that keeps the whole thing nice and fresh – even after sitting in the vaults for nearly 40 years! Titles include "Star Dust", "Hippty Hop", "Please", "Man With A Horn", and "Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White". CD

Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99
The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Titles include "Baiao Infinito", "Near The Ocean", "Efik", "Cosmic Unity", "Canto De Pilon", "El Rio", "Cacao", "Okoroba", and "Neti Neti". LP, Vinyl record album

Jim FordBig Mouth USA – The Unissued Paramount Album ... CD
Paramount/Bear Family (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A heck of a great record from Jim Ford – an early 70s country outsider whose early work hardly got any circulation at the time – but who's managed to go on to become the stuff of legend over the years! This set's got Jim at his best – maybe sounding even more country than on his two Capitol Records sessions, with slightly fuller production – but still that very individual, very distinct way of songwriting and putting over a tune – a quality that sparkles strongly on the album's batch of all-original material by Ford. A few tracks are reworks of numbers done on his unreleased second session for Capitol, taken in a very different way – and the whole thing has an offbeat vibe that's in the best left-of-Nashville mode of the early 70s. Titles include "He Turns My Radio On", "Family Tree", "Mixed Green", "I Call Her Baby", "Rising Sign", "Which Way", "If I Go Country", and "If There's A Will There's A Way". CD

The never-issued follow-up to Jim Ford's classic Capitol album Harlan County – the kind of set that could have made him another Kris Kristofferson, or at least a Billy Joe Shaver – had the record company thought to release this gem at the time! The music is very different than standard Capitol country of the time – much more LA indie underground, with a strong singer-songwriter spirit – yet a record that's also decidedly country through and through, both in the themes of the songs and Jim's presentation of the lyrics – which are wonderful, and backed by a nicely subtle blend of steel and acoustic guitar. Titles include "Harry Hippy", "The Sounds Of Our Time", "Wonder What They'll Do With Today", "Rising Sign", "Big Mouth USA", "Go Through Sunday", and "Point Of No Return". CD

Liberty/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $54.99
A great bit of fusion from the start of the 70s – kind of a bridge between the late 60s "groovy" Japanese jazz, and some of the freer-thinking work to come! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet". G Unit/Interscope, 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... $7.99
We've been fans of 50 since we first heard the brilliant "How To Rob", and nothing about the massive, unbelievable level of popularity he's achieved, or the myriad of underground singles and mixtapes has done has done a damn thing to change our minds about him or his G Unit crew. With much less at stake with this G Unit debut than what was awaiting the Get Rich, Or Die Trying LP, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and the crew just do what they do here. It's hit and miss, but the best of these kind of carefree, loose, and hell, almost nostalgic ghetto anthems makes for what would be a guilty pleasure – except we don't feel the least bit guilty about it. Fantastic soul duets between Marvin & Tammi Terrell – a landmark pair in 60s soul music, and easily one of the best male/female duos in pop music ever! Marvin and Tammi have a way of singing together that makes you feel like they're speaking the tunes, not singing them – a personal, intimate quality that's almost as if we're sneaking in on them behind closed doors – and not hearing their voices cast out in front of full backing in the Motown studios. About Time, 1979. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. A period score, but one with plenty of groovy touches – a masterpiece of 60s film scoring from the great John Addison! Addison's music for the famous Tony Richardson version of Tom Jones is every bit as playful as the images on the screen – with only marginal aesthetics of the period of the story, and instead lots of romping melodies, carried out on horn parts, percussive passages, and even some cool harpsichord bits. Most of the tunes move quite quickly – as does the action on screen – and titles include "Sylvan Misadventures", "Ladies Are Irresistible", "Love Theme From Tom Jones", "Wine & Women", "If He Swing By The String", and "The Squire Steps In". Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! You might remember Tony Aiken for his classic funk album Unity, from the 70s – and here, he's back again – after nearly 40 years away from the studio! The album's got a style that's a lot more reggae-influenced than before – maybe not totally a reggae record, given the other influences that Tony brings to bear – but a style that's definitely Jamaican overall, especially in the rhythms! The project features a big number of guests – as you can probably guess from the images on the front cover – all given a soulful spirit by Tony's lead. Package lists no song titles at all – but there are 10 tracks total. CD

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... CD
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". Aksak MaboulUn Peu De L'Ame Des Bandits ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1979. Sealed ... $29.99
One of our favorite mixing of modes from the old school – a tremendous second album from the legendary Aksak Maboul! The record mixes arty playfulness with some rootsier elements – bits of Eastern instrumentation, jazz, improvisation, and even some post-punk elements – all in a way that makes for one of the most creative recordings of its time – a set that easily provides key inspiration for more recent genre-crossing acts like this! There's a bit of Y or Ze Records whimsy at times – but the end result is much deeper, and much more compelling– as you'd expect from a group that features Fred Frith on guitar, Chris Cutler on drums, Marc Hollander and Michel Berkmans on reeds, and Denis Van Hecke on a range of cool cellos! Each tune has a slightly different flavor, but there's still a really unified feel to the record too – one of those European projects that comes together like nothing you'd hear from the US. Titles include "Geistige Nacht", "A Modern Lesson", "Palmiers En Pots", "Inoculating Rabies", "Cinema", and "Bosses De Crosses". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue pressing – sealed!)
