✨✧ Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". Big BlackBig Black & The Blues ... LP
Uni, 1972. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Not your typical blues, despite the title – and a set that's got a nice mix of folk and funk influences running through the tunes! The overall style is certainly more bluesy than other records by Big Black – in that it features a bit less percussion and a lot more vocals – often on original compositions that are sung in a style that's earthily soulful. There's almost echoes of Terry Callier in the mix, but the overall sound is a lot more rootsy – and titles include "MM Baby", "People are Talkin'", "I Sat and Moan", "Coal Black Eyes", and "Shu-Be-Du". Betty EverettThere'll Come A Time ... LP
Uni, 1969. Very Good ... $6.99
A great near-lost slice of Betty Everett's career – material recorded for Uni Records, in the years after her first big hits on Vee Jay! The sound here is a lot more soulful than on earlier albums – more grown-up and sophisticated, yet also retaining the best sweeter touches that made her great in the first place. The album's got a number of tasty originals – including the title cut "There'll Come A Time", Curtis Mayfield's "Hold On", and the cuts "Maybe", and "You're Falling In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaHugh Masekela Is Alive & Well At The Whisky ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
One of Hugh's most compelling records from the time – cut live at the Whiskey A Go Go, with a jazzy edge that really shows him growing a lot as a musician. The set features small combo backing by a group that features Al Abreu on sax, Hotep Cecil Barnard on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, and Chuck Carter on drums – and in addition to trumpet, Hugh also does sing a little, does a bit of scatting, and talks between some of the songs, in a tone that exposes a political side that you don't hear on his studio sets. Titles include "Son Of Ice Bag", "Senor Coraza", "Ha Lese Le Di Khanna", "Little Miss Sweetness", "Mra", and a groovy reading of "Up Up & Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Strawberry Alarm ClockIncense & Peppermints ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the 8 minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". Strawberry Alarm ClockWake Up – It's Tomorrow ... LP
Uni, 1967. Near Mint- ... $69.99
A great little second set from Strawberry Alarm Clock – much headier and tripped-out than their first! For the record, the group's not just working off the success of a previous single – and instead is really taking time in the studio to try out new ideas, musically, lyrically, and (most importantly) in the range of cool production techniques used on the set! There's still a warm harmony vocal approach on some of the album's best tunes, but they're also matched here with some more progressive guitar parts and fuzzier instrumental touches – in a way that brings a bit of darkness into the sunshine, and creates the wonderful sense of counterpoint that was always the group's strongest suit. Most tunes are nicely unfamiliar, and titles include "Curse Of The Witches", "Black Butter – Past, Present, & Future", "Soft Skies No Lies", "They Saw The Fat One Coming", "Nightmare of Percussion", "Tomorrow", "Sit With the Guru", and "Pretty Song From Psych-Out". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... CD
Uni/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. CD

✨✧ Lucifer (Mort Garson)Black Mass (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Uni/Sacred Bones, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the wildest records ever cut by moog master Mort Garson – a project that gives its spirit away by the Lucifer name that Mort chose for the project! The set's not entirely a black mass – ala Coven – but still has a feel that's very spooky and dark – not a total embrace of Satan, but maybe a vibe that shows that Garson's faith in the spirit is shaken a bit after some of the tragedies of the late 60s. Mort provides a whole host of electronic instrumentation – all analogue, sometimes noisy – and the set features some added music direction from Dave Williams, who helps give the set a different focus than some of Garson's other projects of the time. Titles include "Voices Of The Dead", "Incubus", "The Evil Eye", "Exorcism", "ESP", "Witch Trial", "Solomon's Ring", and "Black Mass". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Love UnlimitedFrom A Girl's Point Of View ... LP
Uni/Mercury, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Great stuff – the beginning of the Love Unlimited dynasty! As we're sure you know, Barry White produced this little gem of a record, and the album was a key proving ground for many of his stone cold soul production ideas before he went off and started doing the lead vocals himself. The White genius is very firmly in place – and is fantastic here mixed with female lead vocals – with this strong current of soul at the bottom, sweeping strings on the top, and a surprisingly badass sound that really makes the record different than most other girl group records. The trio of lovelies that makes up Love Unlimited do a perfect job with Barry's arrangements – singing heavenly harmonies on tracks like "If This World Were Mine", "Is It Really True Boy – Is It Really Me", and the stunning "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", which has one of the best telephone monologues you'll ever hear on a soul track! Larry CarltonWith A Little Help From My Friends/Singing Playing ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1973. New Copy ... $13.99
Two early gems from guitarist Larry Carlton – back to back on a single CD! First up is the Uni album With A Little Help From My Friends – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't You Care", "Mac Arthur Park", "Odd Couple", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Monday Monday". Next is Singing/Playing, and the title's no lie – as Larry Carlton steps out in a warmly-produced session that's got a really sweet LA studio vibe – one that mixes together early fusion backings and compressed vocalizations – in a way that maybe makes the whole thing feel like an overlooked A&M Records gem from the Nick DeCaro years! Larry's got this easygoing vocal style that's very down to earth, and set up in these sweet arrangements directed by Stewart Levine – soulful, jazzy, and with occasional currents of funk – and with some great keyboard touches from MIchael Omartin next to Larry's guitar and vocals. Titles include the great "American Family", plus "Wavin & Smilin", "Easy Evil", "Free Way", "Captain Captain", and "With Respect To Coltrane". CD

Garland Green's great remake of this classic! He sings it with a nice deep Chicago soul style, augmented by some of the slightly modern/southern style production of the Spring label. Garland GreenVery Best Of Garland Green – 24 Tracks From Chicago's Master Soul Singer's Illustrious Career ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A windy city hero – the amazing Garland Green, a singer who makes us mighty proud we hail from Chicago! Garland's got an incredible style that few others can touch – partly schooled in the 60s iceman modes of Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson, with all the sophistication that might imply – but also often given a raspier twist, with slightly southern echoes that make Garland's music feel even more deeply personal! And while most folks know Green's big hits for the Uni label, this package shows a rich legacy that goes much father than that – work recorded for labels that include Cotillion, Spring, RCA, Ocean Front, and Revue – in addition to some key Uni tracks. This trans-label set really does a wonderful job of showing the full range of Garland's mighty talents – a sublime set of soul cuts that run from the start of the 70s right up to the early 80s modern years – packaged with detailed notes too. Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "These Arms", "Just Loving You", "Just My Way Of Loving You", "He Didn't Know", "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy", "Love's Calling", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", "Sweet Loving Woman", "Ask Me What You Want", "You Played On A Player", "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", and "Sending My Best Wishes". ✨✧ David HessClimbing Up The Sunshine Path – Rare, Lost & Unreleased Songs By David Hess ... CD
Diggler (Germany), 1960s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Prepare to discover a pop genius that nobody knows anything about – represented here by a set of recordings that nobody's ever heard before! David Hess first began his career as both a singer and a songwriter at the end of the 50s – the former as an artist signed to Kapp in a rush during the rock and roll years, the latter as an increasingly sensitive lyricist who penned a few hits for the likes of Elvis and Pat Boone. Despite some early fame, though, Hess moved farther and farther to the margins as the 60s moved on – recording some wonderful work that was clearly touched by the sensibilities of the folk era, and which we now can proudly categorize with a brilliant Sunshine Pop approach! A career in films followed, followed by a time in the German music business, followed by more film work – but the core genius of Hess can be heard to best effect in this dreamy set of tunes recorded in the 60s – some as demos from the early songwriting years, and others as full studio affairs from a baroque masterpiece of an album – sadly unreleased at the time. The quality of the work here is great – and reminds us of some of our favorite obscure 60s pop on labels like Decca, Uni, or A&M – done with some fuller arrangements overall, but also coming across with a light and personal style. Titles include "Canticles To Jello", "Central Park", "Girls Of Summer", "Mrs Perkins Flowers", "Molly Barr", "Summertime", "Living Doll", "Living Trix", "Speedy Gonzales", "Two Brothers", "Morning", "Mississippi Fantasy", and "Hey Hey He's A Friend Of Mine". Verve, 1966. Very Good ... $24.99
A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – but here, teamed up with Eddie Palmieri, his music gets a great New York infusion – and one that's even a bit more contemporary than some of Tjader's previous 60s Latin efforts. Eddie's sharp-edged piano is totally great – ringing out with some especially bold tones – and other players on the set include Julian Priester and Mark Weinstein on trombones, Ismael Quintana on percussion, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, and George Castro on flute. Arrangements are by Eddie and Claus Ogerman – and titles include "Los Jibaros", "Ritmo Uni", "Picadillo", "Unidos", "El Sonido Nuevo", and "Guajira En Azul". LP, Vinyl record album

Two obscure Atlantic jazz albums on one CD! The real winner here is The Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby – as Dorothy gets a cool breezy sound out of the harp that's unlike any other player we've ever heard on the instrument. This session doesn't have the funky soul sound of her later Cadet albums, but all of her work is great, and the record shines with a tight approach to rhythm – thanks to excellent backing from Richard Davis, Willie Bobo, and Grady Tate. Tracks include "Flighty", "Nabu Corfa", "Dodi Li", and "Essence of Sapphire". The Junior Mance album's a live one, recorded at The Top Of The Gate, with David Newman in the group playing flute and tenor on two tracks. Impulse (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". 50th Anniversary Edition – also includes the bonus track "Vibrations". Black Seeds/Sound TrekUnited States Army Special Services Agency Europe Presents The Winners Of The Second Annual Original Magnificent Special Services ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $6.99 14.98
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. Black Unity TrioAl-Fatihah ... LP
Salaam Records/Gotta Groove, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Amazing spiritual jazz treasure – the only album ever issued by this obscure avant trio from the Cleveland scene – a group that includes a young Abdul Wadud on bass and cello! The style is nicely loose and open, but also very different than the sound of the AACM at the time – almost more with the slowly building style that would dominate in the loft jazz years, even though these guys were years ahead of that moment. In addition to Wadud – then known as Ron DeVaughn – the group also features Joseph Phillips/Yusuf Mumin on alto, and Hasan Adbur Shahid on percussion. Both players are amazing – Shahid can go from full intensity to spacious sonic territory at a level that matches Sunny Murray – and Mumin's alto can cry plaintively some moments, and come on with the ferocity of a tenor the next. Wadud is wonderful, too – balancing plucked and bowed moments with the quality that we love on later recordings – already very well-formed here, at a time when he was attending Oberlin College. The album's one that really lives up to the promise of its cover and group name – and titles include "Birth Life & Death", "In Light Of Blackness", "Final Expression", "Opening Prayer", and "Al Nisa". Peter Brotzmann and Fred Lonberg-Holm first crossed paths on the fervent Chicago scene of the 90s – and went on to make many great records over the years – a great legacy that really sets things up for their creative improvisations on this more recent set! Fred plays cello and electronics – both with those very unique sensibilities that not only made Lonberg-Holm one of the brightest improvisational stars to emerge in his generation – but which also seems to make him especially well-tuned to a reed player – especially one who's as constantly creative as Brotzmann – blowing here on tenor, tarogato, and b flat clarinet. All tracks are nice and long – and title sinclude "Doliolid", "Pyrosomes", "Salp", "Stolidobranchia", "Aplousobranchia", and "Thalicia". CD

✨✧ Tim BuckleyLady Give Me Your Key – The Unissued 1967 Solo Acoustic Sessions ... LP
Future Days, 1967. New Copy ... $14.99 24.98
A lost treasure for any fan of Tim Buckley – material from two different sessions recorded in 1967, both of which include a few songs that never appeared elsewhere! As the title implies, the recordings here are acoustic – mostly with guitar and Buckley's vocals very much upfront in the mix, at a level that traces an even deeper line back to folk music – but which, throughout, is always graced by that amazing sense of phrasing that made Tim unlike any of his contemporaries! The stripped-down setting is a fantastic one for his vocals – which are possibly even more mindblowing without any sort of studio arrangement or fancy production. Material comes from one rare reel-to-reel tape, only recently discovered – and a rare acetate of another session – and the sound quality for both is great. The package comes with detailed notes on the material, and an in-depth interview with co-lyricism Larry Beckett – and titles include "Sixface", "Contact", "Pleasant Street", "Lady Give Me Your Key", "Once Upon A Time", "Marigold", "Carnival Song", "She's Back Again", and "I Can't Leave You Lovin Me". Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Tremendous work from Junior Byles – a singer with a sweet voice that would have been right at home in the rocksteady years, but which is maybe even more powerful here in a roots session produced by Lee Scratch Perry! That special Perry magic really helps balance things out with Junior's vocals – a raspy edge in the rhythms that reminds us of the deeper qualities of the lyrics – echoed by Byles as he uses his personal soul to enforce their ideas – following a shift in Jamaican music that's similar to the Marvin Gaye shift at the start of the 70s! Titles include "I've Got A Feeling", "Don't Know Why", "Coming Again", "Beat Down Babylon", "A Place Called Africa", and "Poor Chubby". 2CD set features an insane number of bonus tracks – 41 more numbers in all, pulled from singles and other recordings – with titles that include "Curley Locks", "Dreader Locks", "Militant Rock", "Fun & Games", "Motion Dub", "Ungrateful Skank", "Rasta No Pick Pocket", "Come Da Da", "Righteous Oily", "King Of Babylon", "Africa Stand", and "Rub Up Festival 71". Like so many vocalists, Junior Byles shone brightest under the guidance of Lee Perry, and this excellent retrospective collects more than just a few of the great Jamaican soul sides he'd cut under his production. All of these numbers have the spare loping groove, with nice organ lines and bouncing bass that were the hallmark of Scratch's early 70's work, laced with Byles' great roots vocals over top. 23 tracks in all, including "I've Got A Feeling", "Don't Know Why", "Coming Home", "Beat Down Babylon", "A Place Called Africa", "Poor Chubby", "Hail To Power", "Fever", "When Will Better Come", "Curly Locks" and "Dreader Locks". Mercury/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Super-sharp work from Con Funk Shun – one of the best of the mainstream funk acts to emerge in the second half of the 70s – working with the sort of style that was trained in the funky 45 underground, then given a bigger, fuller push to album-length glory! The set is a superb selection of their work for Mercury records – and the tracks here also really show why Con Funk Shun were always a cut above – as they had a way of bringing strong soul vocals to play that often illuminated the tunes very strongly – especially when the group would harmonize together. The set features 32 tracks in all – including "So Easy", "Chase Me", "Ffun (12" mix)", "Confunkshunizeya", "Loveshine", "Shake & Dance With Me", "Sure Feels Good To Me", "Electric Lady", "Burnin Love", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Ms Got The Body", "By Your Side", "Bad Lady", "California 1", "Too Tight", "Lady's Wild", "Let Me Put Love On Your Mind", "Who Has The Time", "Ain't Nobody Baby", and "Got To Be Enough". The legendary unreleased Motown recordings by The Contours – material that should have been issued as a full length LP in 1964 – but all but a couple tunes have languished in the vaults until now! The group simply kills on on these dancefloor ready stormers, with raucous, charismatic lead vocals and tight harmony backup – on a set of numbers that were no doubt ready and set to slay live audiences. We're sure The Contours were unbeatable live, but these recordings really should have made it out at the time. Better late than never, to say the very least! Includes the 60s singles "Can You Do It" and "Can You Jerk Like Me", plus the unreleased "Do The See Saw", "Foot Stomping Time", "Party Groove", "Okey Dokey", "Love Is Uncertain", "Wanted", "Boy Meets Girl", "You Hurt Me So", "Throw You Out Of My Mind", "Giant Steps", "Let's Do The Uncle Willie", "Tonight", "Nobody Fine As Dinah", "Somebody's Daughter Outta", "Let's Do The Uncle Willie" and more. 26 tracks in all! Motown/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Motown, here comes a set to open your ears and blow your mind all over again! The set unearths a huge amount of rare work by The Contours – the rollicking group who gave Motown a sweet album and handful of singles in the 60s, but who also recorded a lot of other work that was never issued at the time – including a sweet array of tracks that feature a young Dennis Edwards as their lead vocalist! Edwards is best known for his work in the Temptations – but these tracks predate that time, when Dennis was brought in to give fresh focus to the ailing Contours – and lent his strong lead vocals to their massively grooving sound. The package features a whopping 26 tracks – 14 issued here for the first time ever, and a lot more pulled from only collections of rare Motown releases – and titles include "Determination", "I'll Turn To Stone", "I Like Everything About You", "Can't Do Without Your Love", "Come See About Me", "I Grow Deeper In Love Every Day", "Our Last Rendezvous", "Which Way To My Baby", "Need Your Lovin", "What's So Good About Goodbye", "Sunny", and "I'm Here Now That You Need Me". Frank Cunimondo TrioSagittarius (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 28.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagitarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! LP, Vinyl record album

A relatively dramatic score by George Duning – composer of a number of fine Hollywood soundtracks from the 50s, like Pal Joey, Picnic, and From Here To Eternity. The film's a slightly whimsical one with Danny Kaye in the lead, but Duning's approach is more somber, and more focused on emotive passages. George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

Peven EverettBeyond The Universe ... CD
Studio Confession, 2009. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
One of the heaviest house albums we've heard from Peven Everett in years – a set that's filled with upbeat, joyous grooves – all done with the same deep soul you'd expect from other recent records! The whole thing's a great step back towards some of the classic grooves from Everett's Chicago scene – the spare pumped-up rhythms that first hit the Windy City back in the 80s house years, transformed here with a 21st Century vibe that has Peven tricking up the rhythms a bit and spacing out some of the instrumentation. Everett's vocals are great, as always – and soulfully sew the tunes together – providing a lot more solid grounding than you'd get in the average house album, and touching nicely on a number of cosmic themes. Titles include "Passing Phase", "Technology", "Inspiration", "Screwed", "Bonanza", "Poppin", "Any Mountain", "I Need You", and "Girl Of My Dreams". CD

The core record is already one of Peven's most house-heavy albums – but in the hands of the mixers, it really hits the dancefloors – crossing over with a sound that's upbeat, very uptempo, and very much in a groove that will have folks who've never heard of Peven finally discovering his music! Regisford's touch is especially strong on the record – which has his usual balance of classic club and contemporary fire – and titles include "Soul Parade", "Burning Hot", "Poppin", "Inspiration", "Girl Of My Dreams", "Screwed Man", and "Tonight Tonight". A heck of a great record from Jim Ford – an early 70s country outsider whose early work hardly got any circulation at the time – but who's managed to go on to become the stuff of legend over the years! This set's got Jim at his best – maybe sounding even more country than on his two Capitol Records sessions, with slightly fuller production – but still that very individual, very distinct way of songwriting and putting over a tune – a quality that sparkles strongly on the album's batch of all-original material by Ford. A few tracks are reworks of numbers done on his unreleased second session for Capitol, taken in a very different way – and the whole thing has an offbeat vibe that's in the best left-of-Nashville mode of the early 70s. Titles include "He Turns My Radio On", "Family Tree", "Mixed Green", "I Call Her Baby", "Rising Sign", "Which Way", "If I Go Country", and "If There's A Will There's A Way". CD

The music is very different than standard Capitol country of the time – much more LA indie underground, with a strong singer-songwriter spirit – yet a record that's also decidedly country through and through, both in the themes of the songs and Jim's presentation of the lyrics – which are wonderful, and backed by a nicely subtle blend of steel and acoustic guitar. We've been fans of 50 since we first heard the brilliant "How To Rob", and nothing about the massive, unbelievable level of popularity he's achieved, or the myriad of underground singles and mixtapes has done has done a damn thing to change our minds about him or his G Unit crew. With much less at stake with this G Unit debut than what was awaiting the Get Rich, Or Die Trying LP, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and the crew just do what they do here. Governor's State University Jazz BandGovernor's State University Jazz Band Live (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Governor's State University/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
A really wonderful album of obscure jazz recordings from the Chicago scene of the 70s – way more than just the usual school band record, as the tracks here are mostly originals, and performed by a very inventive group of musicians! Governor's State University was a very hip place at the time – a public college at the end of the main train line running through the south side of Chicago – which made the school a place of great opportunity and expression for the city's African-American community. Rather than a junior college, GSU had higher levels of learning – and had an especially strong jazz program, as you'll hear in this set – which features both sextet performances and work by a larger ensemble – both imbued with some of the best creative legacy of the Chicago scene. Things never go far outside, but there's definitely a deeper understanding of musical reaches taking place here – and the core quartet features Walter Henderson on cornet, John Pate on piano, Eugene Vineyard on tenor, Ronald Askew on guitar, Jeff Simon on bass, and Curtis Prince on drums. These players are in the larger group – which also features William Howell and Gerald Myrow on trombones, Vincent Carter and Steele Seales on saxes, and Kenneth Brass and Melvin Williams on trumpets. Titles include "Crabmeat", "Song For Suzanne", "Keishaz", "Give It One", "Listen Here", and "Spanish Samba". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleySophisticated Swing ... LP
EmArcy, 1957. Very Good- ... $34.99
Forget the "sophisticated" – and concentrate on the "swing"! This early killer from Cannonball Adderley swings all the way – and it features a young Cannon blowing hard with a tight little combo that's kind of a precursor of his hit recordings on Riverside a few years later. Brother Nat's on cornet, and the rhythm's by Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – a really great trio who help give the set some of the soul jazz vibe that Adderley would bring to his later classics for Riverside. Cannonball's solos are choppy and free – a bit more unbridled than on some of his later work, very pinched in tone, which makes for a wonderfully soulful sound. Titles include "Miss Jackie's Delight", "Another Kind Of Soul", "Jeanie", "Spectacular", and "Eddie McLin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label pressing with drummer logo and deep groove. Cover has masking tape holding the seams and spine, with discoloration from age and notes in marker on back.)

Cannonball Adderley QuintetHappy People ... LP
Capitol, 1972. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A really unique little album from Cannonball's all-great late years at Capitol – a session that features some strong influences from Brazilian music – "The Happy People" – and production from the legendary David Axelrod! The mix makes for a really unique little record – a set that isn't really bossa, but isn't regular Cannonball funk either – kind of a special hybrid of the two! Airto plays on the set, and contributed the great groover "The Happy People" – a long bit of funky samba that features George Duke on electric piano, and percussion and vocals by Airto himself. The rest of the album's pretty darn great too – with some long tracks that have a more open-ended groove than the usual Cannon funk – featuring more piano by Duke, percussion by Airto and King Errison, cornet by Nat Adderley, and guitar by David T Walker. Other titles include "Ela", "Maria Tres Filhos", and "Savior" – and the album was recorded live, with a very lively feel! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

Nat AdderleyAutobiography ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. Used ... $11.99
A gem of a record from Nat Adderley – filled with short soulful groovers, and done with an upbeat vibe that rivals some of Cannonball's best of the 60s! Joe Zawinul handled the arrangements, so there's definitely a strong influence here from the Cannon group – and although the players shift a bit throughout the course of the set, there's a really unified feel – thanks to a top-shelf lineup that includes Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Benny Powell on bass trombone, and Willie Bobo on percussion! The set features all original material by Nat – with older gems and new favorites that include "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Never Say Yes, "Jive Samba", "Stony Island", "Junkanoo", and "Work Song". Nat AdderleyGood Company ... CD
Challenge/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $16.99
The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

African Music MachineBlack Water Gold (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Soul Power/P-Vine (Japan), 1972/1974. New Copy ... $22.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Tony Aiken & FutureLiberation ... CD
Boom Shot, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99
You might remember Tony Aiken for his classic funk album Unity, from the 70s – and here, he's back again – after nearly 40 years away from the studio! The album's got a style that's a lot more reggae-influenced than before – maybe not totally a reggae record, given the other influences that Tony brings to bear – but a style that's definitely Jamaican overall, especially in the rhythms! The project features a big number of guests – as you can probably guess from the images on the front cover – all given a soulful spirit by Tony's lead. Package lists no song titles at all – but there are 10 tracks total. CD

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... CD
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta".
