Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... LP
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 34.99
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Hear LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ G & D (Georgia Anne Muldrow & Dudley Perkins)Message Uni Versa ... CD
Look, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
The debut double team effort from G & D – aka Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins – two of the most stubbornly unclassifiable hip hop soul eccentrics on the Stones Throw roster – working here on the Look label! Both Georgia and Dudley are responsible from some of the most out efforts on Stones Throw – so we were a bit surprised at how straight forward & catchy the Message Uni Versa set turns out. The duo trades lead vocals, with some P-Funk inspired rubbery bass funk in the beats, with lyrics that touch on the spiritual and strident, but remain playful. Nice stuff with recognizable traits from the earlier work, but still stands out! Titles include "God Unit', "On One", "Peace Of Mind", "Time", "Found", "U", "All 4 U", "Good Morning Amerikkka", "War Drums", "The Stomp", "Poppa's Song", "MGD", "Stronger", "The Message" and more. Big BlackLion Walk ... LP
Uni, 1968. Sealed ... $11.99 14.99
One of the weirdest, wildest albums from percussionist Big Black – a set that stretches out with a vibe that's a lot trippier and jazzier at times than some of his other work! Part of the album's strength comes from the arrangements – which are partly handled by Phil Moore, an artist who created all these other great album projects in the late 60s – often, like this one, a cool mix of exotic currents with new trends in funk and jazz – served up here by a lineup that features Moore on piano, Herman Riley and Chester Washington on tenors, Bruce Langhorn and the mysterious Brother Soul on guitars, and Thurman Green on trombone. Curtis Peagler adds in some alto and flute, and Owen Marshall plays the wild hose-a-phone, plus a host of percussion instruments too – while Big Black himself handles congas and a bit of vocals. Side one features the long jamming "Lion Walk" – and side two features "Tell Me, Do Your Conscience Bother You", "Love Sweet Like Sugar Cane", and "Come On Down To The Beach". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram purple vinyl pressing on Future Shock, still sealed with hype sticker.)

Larry CarltonWith A Little Help From My Friends ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good ... $7.99
A really great early album from Larry Carlton – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't You Care", "Mac Arthur Park", "Odd Couple", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Monday Monday". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... CD
Uni/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... $2.99
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. CD

Featuring a pre-Genesis Phil Collins on the drums! The album's got a great spacey jazz rock sound, mixed with some cool pop-psyche influences. Our favorite cut, of course, is the monster breakbeat drum track "In The Light Of Love" – but there's lots of other groovy numbers like "Changes", "The Planets", "Guide Me, Orion", and "From Now On". Elton JohnMadman Across The Water (50th Anniversary 2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Uni/Mercury, 1971. New Copy 2CD ... $27.99 29.99
A set that may well be the record where Elton John totally gets it together – transcending his already-brilliant previous recordings, and finding a way to the special spot that would forever make him a legend! There's a mix of well-crafted songs and soulful presentation that's completely superb here – very personal, very much that new Elton John mode that made thte approach of him and Bernie Taupin so different than so many others in this heady generation of singer/songwriters – and that's really saying a lot! Production and arrangements are great, too – up-close when needed, and never overdone – testified to by the album's classic lineup of tracks that includes "Tiny Dancer", "Levon", "Razor Face", "Madman Across The Water", "Holiday Inn", "Indian Sunset", and "All The Nasties". 2CD edition features some incredible bonus tracks – a full CD that features intimate piano demos of all the tracks from the record, and a demo of the non-LP "Rock Me When He's Gone" – plus other bonus tracks that include the single release "Rock Me When He's Gone", a live radio version of "Indian Sunset", an extended version of "Razor Face", the mono single of "Levon", and a Mick Ronson appearance on the original version of "Madman Across The Water". Uni/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 23.99
A really wonderful, really unique group from the UK scene – one who've got some spare guitar instrumentation of their own, augmented by really wonderful harmonies from all members of the group – then set to some larger arrangements by Steve Gray that really knock things out of the park! There's a very special vibe to the whole thing – a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – as the harmonies are much darker than the warmer sunshine-influenced sound of the Cali scene – served up with a mix of male and female singers together, one of whom is Laurie Styvers, who would go onto record some solo work. The sound of the album is wonderful throughout – and titles include "Flying", "Mini Splurge", "Mr Jones", "Nostrils", "is That Good That's Nice", "Clocks", "Hey I Used To Know You", "Traveler", and "Sea Saw". LovelitesWith Love From The Lovelites (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Uni/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
The only full length album ever cut by this amazing Chicago girl group! The Lovelites first broke onto the charts with their stunning track "How Can I Tell My Mom & Dad" – a sad slow tune about teen pregnancy, sung in a strange otherworldly style that's also quite soulful – with a catchy hook and a way of referring to the problem at hand that's vague, and makes for a strange approach to the material. That track, and the others on the set, are very different than the usual girl trio material – rougher, more honest, with a quality that's emotive, yet not overly drippy. Part of the thanks for this goes to arranger Johnny Cameron, who handled the tracks on the set – but a lot of the credit should also go to lead singer Patty Hamilton, who co-wrote some of the tracks, and who has a fantastic way of putting over the songs. Titles include "This Love is Real", "Certain Kind Of Lover", "Who You Gonna Hurt Now", "Shy Boy", "I've Got Love", "Gotta Let You Go", "Oh My Love", and "How Can I Tell My Mom & Dad". CD

Uni, 1969. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of our favorite 60s surf soundtracks ever – an amazing blend of Stu Phillips orchestrations with some key vocal moments from the trio of Dino Desi & Billy! The album's got a wonderful theme – "Thru Spray Colored Glasses" – sung initially by the trio, then served up by Stu in a number of variations that change with the different exotic locales of the film – India, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Morocco – all referenced slightly in the instrumentation, but in ways that always retain Phillips' grooviest inspirations! Strings blend with bits of harpsichord, vibes, voices, Spanish guitar, and these "watery" woodwinds that almost remind us of Australian jazz in the same period – and titles include "Thru Spray Colored Glasses", "Big Wave Bay", "Incinerator", "Ranee Express", "Nazare", and "Cascis". Not your typical blues, despite the title – and a set that's got a nice mix of folk and funk influences running through the tunes! The overall style is certainly more bluesy than other records by Big Black – in that it features a bit less percussion and a lot more vocals – often on original compositions that are sung in a style that's earthily soulful. There's almost echoes of Terry Callier in the mix, but the overall sound is a lot more rootsy – and titles include "MM Baby", "People are Talkin'", "I Sat and Moan", "Coal Black Eyes", and "Shu-Be-Du". The trio of lovelies that makes up Love Unlimited do a perfect job with Barry's arrangements – singing heavenly harmonies on tracks like "If This World Were Mine", "Is It Really True Boy – Is It Really Me", and the stunning "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", which has one of the best telephone monologues you'll ever hear on a soul track! Uni/Tune In (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classics from Strawberry Alarm Clock – back to back on a single CD! First up is their classic Incense & Peppermints – dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the eight minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". Next is Wake Up It's Tomorrow – a great little second set from Strawberry Alarm Clock – much headier and tripped-out than their first! For the record, the group's not just working off the success of a previous single – and instead is really taking time in the studio to try out new ideas, musically, lyrically, and (most importantly) in the range of cool production techniques used on the set! There's still a warm harmony vocal approach on some of the album's best tunes, but they're also matched here with some more progressive guitar parts and fuzzier instrumental touches – in a way that brings a bit of darkness into the sunshine, and creates the wonderful sense of counterpoint that was always the group's strongest suit. Most tunes are nicely unfamiliar, and titles include "Curse Of The Witches", "Black Butter – Past, Present, & Future", "Soft Skies No Lies", "They Saw The Fat One Coming", "Nightmare of Percussion", "Tomorrow", "Sit With the Guru", and "Pretty Song From Psych-Out". CD also features single mixes of "Tomorrow" and "Sit With The Guru". CD

Righteous soul from late 60s Chicago – a killer collection of early singles from the great Darrow Fletcher – only a youngster at the time, but already working at a level that's as strong as most of his older contemporaries! Darrow's got this soaring voice that really sends us every time we hear him sing – a style that's possibly a bit like Jackie Wilson, but both deeper and lighter at the same time – very unique, especially in these early years – and perfect for helping Fletcher stand out from the pack! The grooves here are nice and deep – socking hard in the best Chi-town styles of the time, with the sort of punch you'd get on the best One-Der-Ful/Mar-V-Lus recordings – with arrangements by Mike Terry, Phil Wright, Tom Tom, and others. Tracks were originally issued on a variety of labels – Groovy, Jacklyn, Uni, Congress, and Genna – and titles include "The Pain Gets A Little Deeper", "Now Is The Time For Love (parts 1 & 2)", "What Have I Got Now", "What Is This", "Gotta Draw The Line", "My Young Misery", "Infatuation", "When Love Calls", "My Judgement Day", "Sitting There That Night", "Changing By The Minute", "What Good Am I Without You", "We Can't Go On This Way", and "That Certain Little Something". FoundationsAm I Grooving You – The Pye Anthology (From The Foundations/Digging The Foundations/Rocking The Foundations/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Pye/Strawberry (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 38.99
Three rare albums from The Foundations – plus a heck of a lot of bonus material too, including solo work by singer Clem Curtis! First up is the From The Foundations album, in both mono and stereo – fantastic early work from this UK group – one who have a wonderful way of blending together elements from soul and rock, in a soaring style that made them a hit on both sides of the Atlantic! Lead singer Clem Curtis is fantastic – with this raspy charm that wins us over right out of the box – a very human, honest quality that brings a hell of a lot of life to the catchy tunes of the group! Titles include "Baby Now That I've Found You", "Hold Me Just A Little While Longer", "Mr Personality Man", "Show Me", "Jerking The Dog", "Writings On The Wall", and "Love Is A Five Letter Word". Next is the album Digging The Foundations – great second album, and one that's got the group working with a really strong batch of unusual material, and sounding every bit as great as before with their new lead singer Colin Young! At times, there's maybe even more of a soul vibe than before – and Young's got this really appealing style that works well with the stepping groove of the group – almost a maturation of the sorts of soul rhythms that were playing big on the Carolina scene, taken into headier territory! Titles include "Solomon Grundy", "That Same Old Feeling", "In The Bad Bad Old Days", "Till Night Brought Day", "Waiting On The Shores Of Nowhere", and "A Walk Through The Trees". Next is the live album Rocking The Foundations – a set that was never fully issued in the US, as only a few of the tracks were thrown on a Uni album. All 12 tracks are here – including "Stop Her On Sight", "Back On My Feet Again", "Love Is All Right", "Harlem Shuffle", "We Are Happy People", "Am I Grooving You", and "Tomorrow". PLUS, 3CD set features lots more bonus tracks – singles that include "Build Me Up Buttercup", "Harlem Shuffle", "Born To Live Born To Die", "Who Am I", "Take A Girl Like You", "In The Beginning", "We Are Happy People", "A New Direction", "It's All Right", "Why Did You Cry", and "Where The Fire Burns". Also features more live material, plus 5 solo tracks by Clem Curtis – and 2 tracks by Colin Young with The New Foundations! 75 tracks in all – and filled with notes on the group and lots of cool vintage images. Garland GreenVery Best Of Garland Green – 24 Tracks From Chicago's Master Soul Singer's Illustrious Career ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A windy city hero – the amazing Garland Green, a singer who makes us mighty proud we hail from Chicago! Garland's got an incredible style that few others can touch – partly schooled in the 60s iceman modes of Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson, with all the sophistication that might imply – but also often given a raspier twist, with slightly southern echoes that make Garland's music feel even more deeply personal! And while most folks know Green's big hits for the Uni label, this package shows a rich legacy that goes much father than that – work recorded for labels that include Cotillion, Spring, RCA, Ocean Front, and Revue – in addition to some key Uni tracks. This trans-label set really does a wonderful job of showing the full range of Garland's mighty talents – a sublime set of soul cuts that run from the start of the 70s right up to the early 80s modern years – packaged with detailed notes too. Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "These Arms", "Just Loving You", "Just My Way Of Loving You", "He Didn't Know", "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy", "Love's Calling", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", "Sweet Loving Woman", "Ask Me What You Want", "You Played On A Player", "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", and "Sending My Best Wishes". P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $46.99 54.99 About March 8, 2023
The rich 70s legacy of the Lovelites – a Chicago trio who first sprang onto the soul with some wonderfully fragile work when they were young, and who continued to record some really great music – even though they never fully got their due at the time! The music here was all done after the girls got their one shot at an LP on the Uni label – and the set features rare work for a variety of different labels, all issued only as 7" singles – plus a few tracks that were never released at the time. All the strength of their early vocals is still in place here, but guided by a sense of maturity that makes the music even more powerful – and which seems to indicate that the trio have already lived a lot of life in the time since their first records – all of which they bring to play in the music. Most tracks have a groovy vibe – midtempo and mellow, but with a gentle groove too – one that brings out the best in lead singer Patti Hamilton, in a set of 16 tracks that includes "My Conscience", "Love So Strong", "Got To Be There", "Oh What A Day", "Get It Off My Conscience", "My Baby Loves Me", "Bumpy Road Ahead", "Man In My Life", "Love Is Pretty", "I'm The One You Need", "Come & Get It", and "Cravin For Your Love". Hollywood, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just another kiddie soundtrack – or an album for a childish TV show – as the set's a surprisingly groovy little record, almost Sunshine Pop in its best moments! We're not sure about the nature of the players or the singers – but arranger Jack Eskew put the whole thing together with a bouncy, bubbly groove that rivals the best pop-psych work of the late 60s on labels like Kapp or Uni – right down to the perfect combination of fuzzy guitars and organ in the instrumentation. Titles include "This Spot", "I'm Gonna Find A Cave", "We're The Banana Splits", "In New Orleans", "Toy Piano Medley", "Don't Go Away Go Go Girl", and the classic "Tra La La Song". CD also features bonus Splits songs – "The Very First Kid On My Block", "The Beautiful Calliope", "Let Me Remember You Smiling", and "Soul". The CD also features the album Here Comes The Beagles – from a very Splits-like show that features another group of singing animals! The Beagles aren't The Beatles, but they definitely have a strong Brit Invasion feel in their music – a UK way with a melody that's mixed with a few sunny Cali pop touches too. Very 60s, very groovy, and way better than just a kiddie record – with tunes that include "What More Can I Do", "Be The Captain", "I Wanna Capture You", "Indian Love Dance", and "You Satisfy". CD

Teensville, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sunshine pop from deep in the 60s underground – not the overplayed hits you'd know from oldies stations, but instead the kind of well-produced by totally obscure gems that drive the true collectors of the style! These tunes are amazing – really well-written and recorded, often with harmonies on the vocals, mixed with some psych instrumentation and sometimes set to larger arrangements – the kind of top-shelf work you'd know from big sunshine pop classics on labels like Capitol, Uni, or Warner Brothers – but much less familiar! The set's maybe the best we've seen so far on the Teensville label, and features a whopping 32 tracks in all – with titles that include "Sing To Me" by Bob Dileo, "My World Of Make Believe" by Barry Darvel, "Thinkin Bout Me" by Fairchilds, "Twiggs" by The Seagulls, "Don't Let Me Catch You In His Arms" by The Razor's Edge, "Shine A Little Light" by Bat McGrath & D Harvey Potter, "I Can't Get Nowhere With You" by Kris Jensen, "Let It Happen" by Don Grady, "I Just Haven't Got What It Takes" by Toni Scotti, "Loving Two" by Peter Courtney, "Like It Never Was" by Peter Vigrass, "It's Waiting There For You" by The Furnacemen, and "Don't Look At Me" by Frank Lyndon. The sound here is a lot more soulful than on earlier albums – more grown-up and sophisticated, yet also retaining the best sweeter touches that made her great in the first place. The album's got a number of tasty originals – including the title cut "There'll Come A Time", Curtis Mayfield's "Hold On", and the cuts "Maybe", and "You're Falling In Love". Spectrum (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way way more than just a northern soul collection – as the set features some killer late 60s soul singles, brought together with a groove that's far wider than simple dancefloor soul – and which features some amazing baroque and sweet soul numbers too! Most of the work is from the Universal-owned side of the 60s labels scene – Chess/Cadet, Uni, Smash, and MGM – but unlike other collections from Universal, this one does a great job of avoiding Motown work, and instead focuses on some lesser-known gems that fell between the cracks (and the charts) at the time! We're really pleased that a number of our favorite older singles have shown up on this set – treasured tunes we've had for years on wax, finally presented properly in a great top-shelf package. 20 tracks in all – with titles that include "Trust In Me" by Jackie Ross, "I Got A Bone To Pick With You" by Ruby Andrews, "Foolish Me" by Joanne Garrett, "What Would I Do" by The Tymes, "Cry Your Eyes Out" by Dottie Cambridge, "Watch Out Girl" by The Embers, "I Got The Fever" by The Prophets, "The Panic Is On" by Roy Hamilton, "Comin Home Baby" by The Soulful Strings, "Wherever You Were" by Bud Harper, "To The Ends Of The Earth" by Tony Middleton, "I Can't Make It Anymore" by Spyder Turner, and "It's All Up To You" by The Dells. Tony Aiken & Future 2000 were an obscure mid 70s group from New York – all players skilled in the burgeoning club scene of the time, but who also had their roots in Caribbean music – coming together for this unique record in a festive blend of early disco and funky styles! The record's got a great home-grown feel – a warm ensemble effort that's got equal parts soul and groove – and which bubbles over with personal touches that really make the tracks stand out from the pack. Really wonderful work from a perfectly-matched trio – an all-star lineup, even though pianist Geri Allen was just at the start of her career – and a group who'd already given the world a few different studio albums on other labels! The set follows up with more material from the group's sessions for DIW at the Village Vanguard – and trust us, the material here is every bit as great as the work that was first issued decades back – a perfect balance between the lyrical flights of Geri Allen on the piano, the warmly round basslines of Charlie Haden, and the measured drum work of Paul Motian – a set that's free of ego, and which really has all three players working in wonderfully sympathetic company. Titles include "Fiasco", "In Walked Bud", "Obtuse Angles", "Two Women From Padua", "Mambo Jumbo", "Song For The Whales", "Dance Of Infidels", "Dancing In The Dark", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was". Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse, 1970. Used ... $9.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A sweet sweet set of electric 70s funk – recorded by Booker T during a brief, but well-needed reunion with the MGs! The sound here is quite different than Stax-era MGs – as Booker plays a range of keyboards, not just organ – and the grooves have these great jazz funk touches at the bottom – almost a CTI vibe at times, but packed with the tighter energy you'd expect from the group! Steve Cropper's guitar is great – super-fine, and razor-sharp – really helping cut a nice edge on the cuts – over bass from Donald Duck Dunn and drums from Willie Hall, who's the only new member of the group. In a way, the album feels like mid 70s efforts from Johnny Hammond or Jimmy Smith – sweetly soaring on a let-loose 70s vibe. Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest records ever from pianist Jaki Byard – a razor-sharp set that features some tremendous work from tenorist Booker Ervin and trumpeter Richard Williams! Byard starts out the set in trio formation for the first two numbers – echoing the great qualities of his earlier albums for New Jazz/Prestige – and then Ervin and Williams slide in on the following two tracks – really expanding the sound with a nice sense of added fire. Both players are a perfect fit for Byard – schooled in a Mingus modernist sensibility that has them really pushing the edges, but never going too far out or getting too free. A few numbers have almost a gutbuckety sense of soul – one that stretches back over previous eras of jazz expression – and titles include "Searchlight", "European Episode", "Out Front", "Two Different Worlds", and "When Sunny Gets Blue" – a track that has Byard on alto and piano, recorded a few years before. Arguably the best of Cherry's albums for Blue Note – and a real masterpiece of soulful avant playing! The group features Cherry on cornet, Gato Barbieri on tenor (and he's incredible, by the way!), Henry Grimes on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Grimes and Blackwell are more than just timekeepers – and deliver a lot of the melody of the session, yet still never lose their sense of swing. Barbieri's fragile raw tone proves to be a good one to work with Cherry, even if there are a few touches of Ornette in his playing. The album's divided up into 2 long suites – "Complete Communion" and "Elephantasy" – both of which are excellent. A pair of Don Cherry classics from the mid 60s – back to back on a single CD! First up is Complete Communion – arguably the best of Cherry's albums for Blue Note – and a real masterpiece of soulful avant playing! A real treat – with no sloppiness, lots of fresh ideas, and a good sense of both freedom and control! Next is Symphony For Improvisers – one of the first truly important records from Don Cherry as a leader – and an amazingly well-crafted session that brings together ideas from his early years with Ornette, and expands them with some of the freedoms he was learning from the European scene! The record boasts a format and lineup that's quite unusual for Blue Note at the time – 2 side-long "suite" tracks, performed by a group that features Cherry on cornet, Pharoah Sanders on tenor and piccolo, Karl Berger on vibes and piano, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Ed Blackwell on drums, and both Jean-Francois Jenny- Clark and Henry Grimes on bass! There's a fair bit of room for creative improvising on the session, but the overall album's a bit more structured than contemporary free jazz outings – and clearly shows the mark of Cherry's interpolation of styles at the time. Two long suites are entitled "Symphony For Improvisers" and "Manhattan Cry" – with shorter passages that include "Nu Creative Love", "Infant Happiness", "Manhattan Cry", and "Lunatic". CD

Super-sharp work from Con Funk Shun – one of the best of the mainstream funk acts to emerge in the second half of the 70s – working with the sort of style that was trained in the funky 45 underground, then given a bigger, fuller push to album-length glory! The set is a superb selection of their work for Mercury records – and the tracks here also really show why Con Funk Shun were always a cut above – as they had a way of bringing strong soul vocals to play that often illuminated the tunes very strongly – especially when the group would harmonize together. There's a righteous depth to the record we never would have expected from Petrella a few years before – an album-length set that's full of jazz and soul, equally intertwined – with a quality that almost feels a lot more like some of the best London work in recent years than some of the more familiar modes we know from the Schema label. Petrella's at the helm of the proceedings, leading the group on trombone – and there's plenty of key guests on the record throughout – including Soweto Kinch on tenor and vocals, Beppe Scardino on baritone, Pasquale Calo on tenor, Vanja Contu on harp, and Anna Bassy on vocals. Titles include "Nomads", "Ancient Jazz", "Unknown Dimension", "Natsu", "Comes From The Ground", "Universal Language", "Wonder", and "Connection". LP, Vinyl record album

A strange 2LP set – put together in 1971, with a cover and a gatefold format that makes it look like current electric Miles on Columbia, but a track list that features Miles early 50s recordings for Blue Note! The tracks were all recorded by Rudy Van Gelder – and the sessions feature JJ Johnson, Gil Coggins, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke, Jackie McLean, and Oscar Pettiford. Lou DonaldsonMan With A Horn (previously unissued material) ... CD
Blue Note, 1961/1963. Used ... $12.99
Hard wailing! Poppa Lou's caught right at the height of his early Blue Note powers here – recorded in 2 different groups on this set of unreleased sessions from the early 60s! Both sets have Lou in a guitar/organ soul jazz setting – with backing by Grant Green on guitar, and either Jack McDuff or John Patton on organ. The McDuff set features the great Joe Dukes on drums, and the session sparkles like one of McDuff's best Prestige albums from the time. The other session has the classic Patton/Green lineup augmented by trumpeter Irwin Stokes, a lesser-known talent who really opens up the sound nicely. There's a total of 9 tracks in all – a number of them ballads, but done with a lively soulful tone that keeps the whole thing nice and fresh – even after sitting in the vaults for nearly 40 years! Titles include "Star Dust", "Hippty Hop", "Please", "Man With A Horn", and "Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White". CD

George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good ... $2.99 4.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

Two great duet recordings – each featuring Muhal Richard Abrams with a fellow member of the AACM! CD1 features what may well be the last recording of tenor giant Fred Anderson – a performance recorded late in 2009, with Abrams on piano and Anderson blowing some wonderfully tentative lines on tenor – much more sensitive at points than some of his other later recordings – and proof that at the right moments, Fred really knows how to demonstrate his ties to the AACM! CD2 features Muhal working with the great George Lewis – who plays both trombone and laptop, always with an ear to the unique sounds and colors that Abrams can get from a piano – the pair of them almost painting together in sound. Joshua AbramsCloud Script ... LP
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 21.99
Tremendous work from Joshua Abrams – a set that's very different than some of his other work in recent years, but every bit as great! The set's got a lean group – Abrams on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, Gerald Cleaver on drums, and the great Ari Brown on tenor – of Awakening fame – a group that delivers a more stripped-down version of some of Josh's more spiritual ideals – but in ways that also touch base with more conventional jazz expression! Make no mistake, there's nothing conventional about this set – the approach is very unique, and very striking – and the presence of the younger musicians really sets Ari Brown on fire, and reminds us of what a great soloist he can be when he's pushed to his limits. Titles include "Collapsing Novelty", "Duke Hill", "Echo Tracer", "In Place Of Memory", and "Coniunctio". LP, Vinyl record album

Miguel Abuelo & NadaMiguel Abuelo & Nada ... CD
RGS (Argentina), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
Argentine rock, recorded in Paris during the early 70s – a really unusual expatriate album that comes off with a sound that's pretty unique! Miguel Abuelo clearly draws inspiration from the heavier rock that was showing up in South America at the time – yet the overall execution of the record also shares some of the warmer, more optimistic qualities that marked some of the French groups during the period – occasional folksy elements, and a post-68 positivity that holds on even when things get somewhat trippy and jammy. Instrumentation is heavy on guitars – both acoustic and electric – and the longer tracks really take off with some wild sounds, especially when bits of moog or electronics are dropped into the mix. Titles include "Senor Carnicero", "El Muelle", "Estoy Aqui Parado Sentado Y Acostado", "El Largo Dia De Vivir", and "Tirando Piedras Al Rio". CD

Cannonball AdderleyAccent On Africa ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of this generation of new liberation – tunes that sparkle with lead alto and soprano sax from Cannon, but which really draw even more energy from the whole collective of musicians on the record – a hip lineup led by HB Barnum, who also did all the arrangements for the set! The result is a record that's unlike any of Adderley's other albums – from some of the evocative snakey lines on the top, to the hip mix of 60s Cali soul and African percussion on the bottom. And oh yeah, David Axelrod produced the whole thing too! Titles include "Gumba Gumba", "Up & At It", "Hamba Nami", "Ndolima", and "Lehadima". CD

Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Rare concert work by Cannonball Adderley – recorded live in Europe in the early 60s, only ever issued there until a much later release in the US, but every bit as essential as any of the Adderley live combo albums from the early 60s – including their classics at the Lighthouse and in San Francisco! The group here is every bit as wonderful as the combos on those sets – a young Yusef Lateef on reeds, really hitting his stride in the mix of soulful and exotic grooves in the set – working with Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The tunes are a good mix of modal numbers and more straightforward hardbop – and titles include "P Bouk", "Gemini", "Work Song", "Trouble In Mind", and "Dizzy's Business". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball's Sharpshooters ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A set that's right on target, right from the start – and one that has the young Cannonball Adderley really coming into his groove! The set's a lot more soul jazz-oriented than some of Cannon's records from a few years before – played by a rock-solid group that includes brother Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – hitting a groove that's got plenty of nascent elements of that Cannonball sound that would virtually take over jazz in the 60s! Yet there's also a nicely different vibe going on here too – a bit less structure, and a looser approach to the mode – spun out with some modern moments too, on titles that include "Straight No Chaser", "Jubilation", "Our Delight", "Fuller Bop Man", and "Stay On It". Jazz Casual/Koch, 1961/1968. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest sets of material from Ralph Gleason's legendary Jazz Casual program – featuring two different soul jazz performances, each from one end of the 60s! First up is Cannonball Adderley's famous quintet – with Nat on trumpet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – blowing in the soulful mode of their classic Riverside recordings, on titles that include "Unit Seven", "Arriving Soon", and "Scotch & Water" – plus some interview material too! Charles Lloyd follows up with a 1968 performance that's very much in his Atlantic mode – longer tracks played in a modal style – with a group that includes Keith Jarrett and Jack De Johnette. There's less interview material on the Lloyd set, and titles include "Forest Flower", "Love Ship", and "Tagore/Passin Thru". CD

Sticky Buttons (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
An album with a really unique sort of pedigree – tracks that were recorded in the garment district of New York during the mid 70s, then later collected into a full album that was pressed up by singer/guitarist Carlos Fire Aquasvivas – who also did all the artwork for the cover in pen! The style is soul with a touch of rock – funky in all the right places, and recorded with a lean style that has plenty of focus on the electric piano, organ, and guitar – as well as the sweet vocals that rise in the lead! Side one features some shorter tracks that are nice and catchy – "Think Positive", "Try It All Again", and "Jennifer" – while side two features the longer "Eclipse Of The City" suite, which is a more ambitious work – with passages that include "Hustle Bustle", "Funky Side Of Town", "Beginnings", "Home", and "Midnight". The production has a somewhat ambitious feel – spreading Airto's sound out with wider sonic reaches, yet never stretching things too far – just updating his uniquely percussive groove a bit for a 21st Century audience, but all without playing around too much. Flora Purim guests a bit on the record – and titles include "Come As You Are", "700 Years", "After These Messages", "Street Vendors", "Homeless", "The Last One", and "Samba For Sale". CD

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... CD
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". A beautifully fragile record of solo piano work – one that seems to underscore it's "alone" title not just with the fact that it features just Shoji Aketagawa on piano, but also because the whole thing's recorded with this echoey, almost forlorn of quality – very unusual for a solo piano set in them modern age! Yet the record's also on the always-quirky Aketa's Disk label, and is done in the unique mode of some of their other gems – right down to allowing the grunts and vocalizations of Shoji come through alongside his work on the keys. A great collection of a unique showcase in 50s jazz – large group recordings by arranger Manny Albam, done to showcase some of the best players of the time from both the New York and LA scenes! The sessions were originally recorded for Decca – with volume 1 featuring mostly players from New York, and volume 2 featuring the cream of the crop of the west coast scene. The format was simple – in that Albam would pen arrangements for longish tracks that brought together the whole ensemble – then allowed plenty of space for players to break out in well-crafted solos. Artists include Art Farmer, Harry Edison, Conte Candoli, Bob Brookmeyer, Phil Woods, Zoot Sims, Bill Holman, Gerry Mulligan, Charlie Mariano, Milt Hinton, Lou Levy, Hank Jones, and Pepper Adams – and tracks include "See Here Miss Bromley", "Poor Dr Millmoss", "Blues From Neither Coast", "Home Brew", "Little Eye Opener", "Blues Over Easy (parts 1 & 2)", and "Afterthoughts". 2CD set features 20 tracks in all – seemingly a lot more than on the original albums! Sweet and dreamy vocals from Anna Maria Alberghetti – a great reminder that she was once a heck of a great singer, in the years before she became the Good Seasons lady! The album's got a soft, gentle feel – one that works perfectly for Anna's singing style – and which offsets her youth by bringing in some more mature shadings of sadness into the arrangements – handled here by Van Alexander with a much more contemporary sound than we're used to hearing. The rhythms are lively, but nice and light too – skipping around with a fantastic vibe that really illuminates the keyboards, guitar lines, and other elements used in the music – that kind of breezy, lovely quality we love in some of our best Italian soundtracks – served up here on short instrumentals with a nice sense of variety, but a very unified vibe on the album. Always-great work from Eric Alexander – one of our favorite tenor players of the modern age, and a talent who gets better and better with each album! This one features Eric working with pianist Harold Mabern – in a wonderful union that's been forged over the course of a number of records, and which seems to be one of the greatest things that's happened to either player. Mabern lays out loads of wonderful modal lines in the set – keeping a rhythmic pulse that stretches out Alexander's solos in sweeping brilliance on the upbeat tracks, holding them back with gentle soul on the mellower ones. Impulse/MCA, 1964/1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic work by the great Lorez Alexandria – a 2-in-1 CD that brings together both of her rare albums for the Impulse label! Lorez The Great was recorded after Lorez cut some great sides for the Argo label in the early 60s – and it works off the strength of those sides, taking her unique vocal approach, forged in R&B, but smoothed by jazz, into a whole new level of expression. The backing's by musicians like Bud Shank, Wynton Kelly, Victor Feldman, and Paul Horn, and the arrangements are nice and moody, and are a perfect accompaniment to Lorez' beautiful voice. Includes the cuts "Get Me To The Church On Time", "Satin Doll", "Show Me", "The Best Is Yet to Come", "I'm Through With Love" and 5 others. More Of The Great has Lorez in a perfect setting – with sophisticated backing that really lets her take charge, and direct the songs tightly with her incredibly soulful voice. The set's a wonderful blend of jazz and soul styles, with bits of bossa running through the mix – and vocals that are handled in that lightly groovy style that's always made Lorez so great! The album features a great bossa rendition of "O Barquinho", plus the cuts "Dancing On The Ceiling", "Once", "Angel Eyes", "No More", and "That Far Away Look". CD

One of the greatest records ever recorded by vocalist Lorez Alexandria – and a perfect summation of her rich talents as a singer! Backing is by a small Chicago trio that includes John Young on piano, Vernel Fournier on drums, and George Eskridge on bass – but the arrangements of the tracks, and Lorez's unique interpretations drive the tunes into territory that's surprisingly advanced for the 1962 date of the session. You'll recognize most of the tunes – but as the old adage goes, it's not the song, but the singer – and you'll hear Lorez crafting a rich tapestry of sound and emotion from titles like "No Moon At All", "I Was A Fool", "Detour Ahead", "Travlin Light", and "I Want To Talk About You". ✨✧ Lorez AlexandriaFor Swingers Only ... CD
Argo/Dusty Groove, 1963. Used ... $19.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Lorez Alexandria – an ultra-hip singer who recorded for Impulse and King, but who sounds especially wonderful on this rare date for Chess Records! The album's got a groove that definitely lives up to its title – a jazzy, bouncy sort of rhythm that's definitely "for swingers only", and which is a nice contrast to overdone torch or standard jazz vocal modes. Alexandria's singing is completely sublime – quite fluid, yet with a soulful depth that's really amazing – and her backing combo is equally hip – a group led by John Young on piano, and also featuring George Eskridge on guitar, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Phil Thomas on drums, and Ronald Wilson on flute and tenor – an obscure player whose reed work really makes the album sparkle! The song choices are great too – a mix of some under-recorded gems and a few blue-toned classics – all redone amazingly by Lorez with a sound that's quite unique. Titles include her classic Argo reading of "Baltimore Oriole", which begins with an amazing drum/bass passage that's worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "The End Of A Love Affair", "Baltimore Oriole", "All Or Nothing At All", "Mother Earth", "Love Look Away", and "Traveling Down A Lonely Road".
