✨✧ Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". FoundationsBaby, Now That I've Found You ... LP
Uni, 1967. Very Good+ ... $8.99
The Foundations were the first of many successful British groups to break the American charts – and this first LP has the racially mixed group grooving like the best US soul acts from the same time. The set kicks off with the band's first big single – "Baby, Now That I've Found You", a huge radio hit on both sides of the Atlantic – then it rolls into a mix of original tracks and covers, most with kind of a southern soul sound. Titles include "Jerking The Dog", "I'm A Whole New Thing", "Come On Back To Me", "Just A Little While Longer", and "I've Seen The Writing On The Wall". LP, Vinyl record album

Giant CrabCool It – Helios (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Uni/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really wild little record from the Uni Records label at the end of the 60s – and that's saying a lot, given that Uni was putting out plenty of wild records at the time! Giant Crab have this style that mixes psych with sunshine pop – woven in this amazing blend of sounds, over the course of a surprising 16 tracks on the set – tunes that are all short, but pack plenty in the mix – with lots of work on 12 string guitar, keyboards, saxes, and harmony vocals – often brought together with some great effects and studio touches too! The arrangements are superb – showing a wider musical vision, but without losing the feel of the group at the core – and titles include "What Became Of Yesterday's Hero", "Don't Jump To Conclusions", "Help Yourself", "Trust Somebody", "Hello Yesterday", "Cool It", "The Invasion Of Helios", "I Don't Want To Live This Way", and "Walking In Different Circles". Elton JohnElton John ... LP
Uni, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
The first real moment of genius from Elton John – a record issued with an understated cover and title, but which set the scene for all the greatness to come from the singer in the 70s! The strength of the Bernie Taupin partnership is on full display here – through a set of amazing tunes that are still some of Elton's greatest – delivered with vocal performances that are open, honest, and free of any sense of self-consciousness – matched by arrangements that use strings in ways that are subtle and sublime. The whole thing is a masterpiece – with titles that include "Your Song", "Sixty Years On", "First Episode At Hienton", "I Need You To Turn To", "Take Me To The Pilot", "Border Song", "The Greatest Discovery", and "The Cage". ✨✧ Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... CD
Uni/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. CD

✨✧ Lucifer (Mort Garson)Black Mass (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Uni/Sacred Bones, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the wildest records ever cut by moog master Mort Garson – a project that gives its spirit away by the Lucifer name that Mort chose for the project! The set's not entirely a black mass – ala Coven – but still has a feel that's very spooky and dark – not a total embrace of Satan, but maybe a vibe that shows that Garson's faith in the spirit is shaken a bit after some of the tragedies of the late 60s. Mort provides a whole host of electronic instrumentation – all analogue, sometimes noisy – and the set features some added music direction from Dave Williams, who helps give the set a different focus than some of Garson's other projects of the time. Titles include "Voices Of The Dead", "Incubus", "The Evil Eye", "Exorcism", "ESP", "Witch Trial", "Solomon's Ring", and "Black Mass". LP, Vinyl record album

Garland GreenVery Best Of Garland Green – 24 Tracks From Chicago's Master Soul Singer's Illustrious Career ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A windy city hero – the amazing Garland Green, a singer who makes us mighty proud we hail from Chicago! Garland's got an incredible style that few others can touch – partly schooled in the 60s iceman modes of Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson, with all the sophistication that might imply – but also often given a raspier twist, with slightly southern echoes that make Garland's music feel even more deeply personal! And while most folks know Green's big hits for the Uni label, this package shows a rich legacy that goes much father than that – work recorded for labels that include Cotillion, Spring, RCA, Ocean Front, and Revue – in addition to some key Uni tracks. This trans-label set really does a wonderful job of showing the full range of Garland's mighty talents – a sublime set of soul cuts that run from the start of the 70s right up to the early 80s modern years – packaged with detailed notes too. Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "These Arms", "Just Loving You", "Just My Way Of Loving You", "He Didn't Know", "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy", "Love's Calling", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", "Sweet Loving Woman", "Ask Me What You Want", "You Played On A Player", "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", and "Sending My Best Wishes". A fantastic sexy soundtrack from Bill Loose – scored for a Russ Meyer Sexploitation film, but handled with a care that goes way deeper than you might expect! Bill brings in some nice jazzy moments on organ and guitar – and there's also some Sunshine Pop-styled vocals at points – sometimes with lyrics, sometimes wordless singing in a cool harmony mode – all of which make the whole thing feel more like some higher-level rock-era score on a label like Uni or Tower! A few tunes are more romping and groovy – most likely for some of the sexier scenes in the film – and titles include "Toys Of Our Time", "Harry's Theme", "Here's Harry", "Cherry & Raquel", "Franklin & Cherry", and "Cherry's Theme". A killer bit of funk from mid 70s Tanzania – performed here by a group who never got the same international exposure as some of their contemporaries, but who really made some magic on their local scene! Sunburst work in this wicked blend of sharp guitar lines, heavy bass, and plenty of drums and percussion – all used in ways that are nicely different from modes you might know from Nigeria or South Africa at the time – almost a rolling wave of groove that has all the instrumental elements moving together at once, while the vocals bounce nicely along over the top! There's also some occasional trippier moments, too – weird keyboards or other inflections that really expand the sound, while still holding onto the best core elements – and the whole thing's a really haunting record that really stands out from the pack! Titles include "Kitoto Sound", "Ba Motoka Na Castle", "Ave Africa", "How Can I Get To You", and "Ani Uni". ✨✧ American BluesAmerican Blues Is Here (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Big Pink (South Korea), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great group from the Texas scene of the late 60s – one that's maybe best known for giving the world the bass of Dusty Hill and drums of Frank Beard – who'd later go on to form ZZ Top with Billy Gibbons – but a combo who are more than great enough on their own! Yes, there's plenty of blues inspiration in the music – but the sound is every bit as trippy as the cover – and Rocky Hill works in some very sharp, very complex guitar lines throughout – already outpacing his influences by a lot, as the group come across with a sound that's steeped in the best Texas psych modes of the time! We don't know much about the setting for the record, but the production and presentation are top-shelf – maybe even better than the group's following record on Uni – and titles include "Mercury Blues", "Fugue For Lady Cheriff", "It's Gone", "Keep My Heart In A Rage", "Melted By Snow", "All I Saw Was You", and a great trippy remake of "If I Were A Carpenter". ✨✧ Larry CarltonWith A Little Help From My Friends/Singing Playing ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two early gems from guitarist Larry Carlton – back to back on a single CD! First up is the Uni album With A Little Help From My Friends – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't You Care", "Mac Arthur Park", "Odd Couple", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Monday Monday". Next is Singing/Playing, and the title's no lie – as Larry Carlton steps out in a warmly-produced session that's got a really sweet LA studio vibe – one that mixes together early fusion backings and compressed vocalizations – in a way that maybe makes the whole thing feel like an overlooked A&M Records gem from the Nick DeCaro years! Larry's got this easygoing vocal style that's very down to earth, and set up in these sweet arrangements directed by Stewart Levine – soulful, jazzy, and with occasional currents of funk – and with some great keyboard touches from MIchael Omartin next to Larry's guitar and vocals. Titles include the great "American Family", plus "Wavin & Smilin", "Easy Evil", "Free Way", "Captain Captain", and "With Respect To Coltrane". CD

Ahmed (Pat Thomas/Antonin Gerbal/Joel Grip/Seymour Wright)Nights On Saturn (Communication) ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
That's a picture of legendary bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik on the cover, and the title of the record hints at the legacy of Sun Ra – both references that should really give you an idea of the spirit of the sound within! The liner notes are by pianist Pat Thomas, who calls for a deeper exploration of the influence of West African Islamic culture on American jazz – but despite that text, and the group's name, the overall feel of the record is very much in the full-voiced sort of improvisation that we've come to love from Thomas in many different settings over the years! The quartet features Seymour Wright on alto, Joel Grip on bass, and Antonin Gerbal on drums – and all players do a great job of playing freely, but also handling the sound in these chunks that are inherently rhythmic, even though they've got a very different feel than standard jazz changes! Wright is especially compelling – with these repeated cries on alto that really give a special voice to the record – and the group performs one long improvisation, recorded at London's Cafe OTO. Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Albert AylerSpiritual Unity ... CD
ESP/ZYX (Germany), 1964. Used ... $7.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. Salaam Records/Gotta Groove, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 33.98
Amazing spiritual jazz treasure – the only album ever issued by this obscure avant trio from the Cleveland scene – a group that includes a young Abdul Wadud on bass and cello! The style is nicely loose and open, but also very different than the sound of the AACM at the time – almost more with the slowly building style that would dominate in the loft jazz years, even though these guys were years ahead of that moment. In addition to Wadud – then known as Ron DeVaughn – the group also features Joseph Phillips/Yusuf Mumin on alto, and Hasan Adbur Shahid on percussion. Both players are amazing – Shahid can go from full intensity to spacious sonic territory at a level that matches Sunny Murray – and Mumin's alto can cry plaintively some moments, and come on with the ferocity of a tenor the next. Wadud is wonderful, too – balancing plucked and bowed moments with the quality that we love on later recordings – already very well-formed here, at a time when he was attending Oberlin College. The album's one that really lives up to the promise of its cover and group name – and titles include "Birth Life & Death", "In Light Of Blackness", "Final Expression", "Opening Prayer", and "Al Nisa". The label was fortunate to have 2 great house bands – Booker T & The MGs and the Mar-Keys – both of whom had a stripped down soulful approach that helped take the raw R&B groove of the 50s, and filter it into the more sophisticated soul sound of the 60s. And while both of the groups released plenty of albums and singles under their own name for Stax, they also spent so much time in the studios that they left behind a wealth of great unissued material – some of it even better than their official releases, due to the laidback and relaxed nature of the sessions. This great CD brings together over two dozen tracks by the two groups – none of which have been issued before, all of which are packaged here with great sound and notes that finally do the material justice. Titles by Booker T & The MGs include "Weird Stomp", "Slidin", "Good Groove", "Let's Go", "Consumption", "The Bo Vitch", "Three Leaf Clover", "Lawn Party", "Ain't It", and "Funky Folks Cha Cha". Titles by the Mar-Keys include "Peppy", "Gigglin", "Raw Hide", "Tighten Up", "Saucy", "Sassy", "The Floyd", "Settle Down", and "Blue Peanut". CD

Cisco BradleyUniversal Tonality – The Life & Music Of William Parker ... Book
Duke University Press, 2021. New Copy ... $20.99 29.95
A huge book on the equally-huge creative legacy of bassist William Parker – a musician who first arose in the loft jazz scene in New York during the 70s, but who's gone on to be one of its greatest surviving players, and one who's transformed the inspirations of that world into so many different modes of expression over the decades! Author Cisco Bradley really digs deep – following Parker from his southern roots to his childhood in the South Bronx, to his strong contributions to avant scenes, first in New York, then around the globe – all with a sensitivity to community and context that shows that Parker isn't just some genius musician, but both an evolving participant in creative activity, and one whose contributions have transformed the landscape as well! The book is softcover, 402 pages, and has copious notes, a discography, and even some black and white images as well. Book

Peter Brotzmann and Fred Lonberg-Holm first crossed paths on the fervent Chicago scene of the 90s – and went on to make many great records over the years – a great legacy that really sets things up for their creative improvisations on this more recent set! Fred plays cello and electronics – both with those very unique sensibilities that not only made Lonberg-Holm one of the brightest improvisational stars to emerge in his generation – but which also seems to make him especially well-tuned to a reed player – especially one who's as constantly creative as Brotzmann – blowing here on tenor, tarogato, and b flat clarinet. All tracks are nice and long – and title sinclude "Doliolid", "Pyrosomes", "Salp", "Stolidobranchia", "Aplousobranchia", and "Thalicia". CD

Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
Tremendous work from Junior Byles – a singer with a sweet voice that would have been right at home in the rocksteady years, but which is maybe even more powerful here in a roots session produced by Lee Scratch Perry! That special Perry magic really helps balance things out with Junior's vocals – a raspy edge in the rhythms that reminds us of the deeper qualities of the lyrics – echoed by Byles as he uses his personal soul to enforce their ideas – following a shift in Jamaican music that's similar to the Marvin Gaye shift at the start of the 70s! Titles include "I've Got A Feeling", "Don't Know Why", "Coming Again", "Beat Down Babylon", "A Place Called Africa", and "Poor Chubby". 2CD set features an insane number of bonus tracks – 41 more numbers in all, pulled from singles and other recordings – with titles that include "Curley Locks", "Dreader Locks", "Militant Rock", "Fun & Games", "Motion Dub", "Ungrateful Skank", "Rasta No Pick Pocket", "Come Da Da", "Righteous Oily", "King Of Babylon", "Africa Stand", and "Rub Up Festival 71". ✨✧ Alice ColtraneUniversal Consciousness ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 About June 16, 2021
One of Alice Coltrane's most adventurous albums – a beautiful blend of organ, harp, percussion, and strings – much of which are transcribed for the album by Ornette Coleman! The most haunting aspect of the album is Alice's work on organ – spare, jagged, with a nascent soulful quality that's quite different from her piano work on other Impulse albums. The strings provide a sheet of sound – a shimmering backdrop to support Alice's work on the keys – moving forward tentatively, but growing in energy as the album progresses through a host of Eastern spiritual influences. Alice is way past jazz at this point – moving towards the new level of consciousness hinted at in the title, growing majestically on tracks that include "Oh Allah", "Sita Ram", "Hare Krishna", "Universal Consciousness", and "The Ankh of Amen-Ra". Mercury/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Super-sharp work from Con Funk Shun – one of the best of the mainstream funk acts to emerge in the second half of the 70s – working with the sort of style that was trained in the funky 45 underground, then given a bigger, fuller push to album-length glory! The set is a superb selection of their work for Mercury records – and the tracks here also really show why Con Funk Shun were always a cut above – as they had a way of bringing strong soul vocals to play that often illuminated the tunes very strongly – especially when the group would harmonize together. The set features 32 tracks in all – including "So Easy", "Chase Me", "Ffun (12" mix)", "Confunkshunizeya", "Loveshine", "Shake & Dance With Me", "Sure Feels Good To Me", "Electric Lady", "Burnin Love", "Can You Feel The Groove Tonight", "Ms Got The Body", "By Your Side", "Bad Lady", "California 1", "Too Tight", "Lady's Wild", "Let Me Put Love On Your Mind", "Who Has The Time", "Ain't Nobody Baby", and "Got To Be Enough". Motown/Kent (UK), 1963/1964. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
The legendary unreleased Motown recordings by The Contours – material that should have been issued as a full length LP in 1964 – but all but a couple tunes have languished in the vaults until now! The group simply kills on on these dancefloor ready stormers, with raucous, charismatic lead vocals and tight harmony backup – on a set of numbers that were no doubt ready and set to slay live audiences. We're sure The Contours were unbeatable live, but these recordings really should have made it out at the time. Better late than never, to say the very least! Includes the 60s singles "Can You Do It" and "Can You Jerk Like Me", plus the unreleased "Do The See Saw", "Foot Stomping Time", "Party Groove", "Okey Dokey", "Love Is Uncertain", "Wanted", "Boy Meets Girl", "You Hurt Me So", "Throw You Out Of My Mind", "Giant Steps", "Let's Do The Uncle Willie", "Tonight", "Nobody Fine As Dinah", "Somebody's Daughter Outta", "Let's Do The Uncle Willie" and more. 26 tracks in all! Catchy 70s pop from Gino Cunico – just the right sort of songs that would have sounded wonderful coming out of an AM radio in your car – with that kind of production that somehow managed to make that tiny speaker on the dashboard sound so much stronger than it was! Gino puts himself right out there with the tunes – not afraid to be a crossover crooner, with maybe a bit of a Bee Gees influence in his approach – amidst the well-crafted strings and orchestrations in the background. Most numbers are pretty hook-heavy – and titles include the hit "Can't Smile Without You", plus "Daydreamer", "Can't Hold On Any Longer", "Emptiness", "Don't Throw It All Away", and "When I Wanted You". The tracks here are a perfect balance of Dolphy in his final year – with some spiritual jazz currents, but still a strong sense of swing – with a fantastic lineup that includes Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, Clifford Jordan on soprano, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and both JC Moses and Charles Moffett on drums – almost a who's-who of people who would go onto shape the face of jazz in years to come. Titles include "A Personal Statement", "Ode To Charlie Parker", "Iron Man", "Come Sunday", "Burning Spear", "Muses For Richard Davis", "Alone Together", "Love Me", and "Jitterbug Waltz" – plus a number of other different versions of tunes. 3CD set comes with a 100 page booklet – featuring photos, essays, and interviews with Sonny Simmons, Sonny Rollins, Nicole Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and David Murray. George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

Colpix, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $39.99
One of the greatest albums of crime jazz ever! But even cooler than that, the whole thing's got narration by John McIntire, very much in the spirit of the crime drama Naked City – filmed in New York in verite style. The music is in that late 50s TV crime mode, but the narration really makes it come alive even more – and a number of tracks even break into vocal numbers, with singing by either Joann Greer or James Darren – but the narration is one of the best parts, as it really recaptures the moody feel of the excellent show! Peven EverettBeyond The Universe ... CD
Studio Confession, 2009. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
One of the heaviest house albums we've heard from Peven Everett in years – a set that's filled with upbeat, joyous grooves – all done with the same deep soul you'd expect from other recent records! The whole thing's a great step back towards some of the classic grooves from Everett's Chicago scene – the spare pumped-up rhythms that first hit the Windy City back in the 80s house years, transformed here with a 21st Century vibe that has Peven tricking up the rhythms a bit and spacing out some of the instrumentation. Everett's vocals are great, as always – and soulfully sew the tunes together – providing a lot more solid grounding than you'd get in the average house album, and touching nicely on a number of cosmic themes. Titles include "Passing Phase", "Technology", "Inspiration", "Screwed", "Bonanza", "Poppin", "Any Mountain", "I Need You", and "Girl Of My Dreams". CD

Paramount/Bear Family (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A heck of a great record from Jim Ford – an early 70s country outsider whose early work hardly got any circulation at the time – but who's managed to go on to become the stuff of legend over the years! This set's got Jim at his best – maybe sounding even more country than on his two Capitol Records sessions, with slightly fuller production – but still that very individual, very distinct way of songwriting and putting over a tune – a quality that sparkles strongly on the album's batch of all-original material by Ford. A few tracks are reworks of numbers done on his unreleased second session for Capitol, taken in a very different way – and the whole thing has an offbeat vibe that's in the best left-of-Nashville mode of the early 70s. Titles include "He Turns My Radio On", "Family Tree", "Mixed Green", "I Call Her Baby", "Rising Sign", "Which Way", "If I Go Country", and "If There's A Will There's A Way". CD

The album has Dizzy recreating his bigger group sound of the 50s – but with a groove that's much more lively, open, and swinging – very much in keeping with the MPS big band style of the late 60s, which is no surprise given that the album was recorded for the label! Governor's State University/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
A really wonderful album of obscure jazz recordings from the Chicago scene of the 70s – way more than just the usual school band record, as the tracks here are mostly originals, and performed by a very inventive group of musicians! Governor's State University was a very hip place at the time – a public college at the end of the main train line running through the south side of Chicago – which made the school a place of great opportunity and expression for the city's African-American community. Rather than a junior college, GSU had higher levels of learning – and had an especially strong jazz program, as you'll hear in this set – which features both sextet performances and work by a larger ensemble – both imbued with some of the best creative legacy of the Chicago scene. Things never go far outside, but there's definitely a deeper understanding of musical reaches taking place here – and the core quartet features Walter Henderson on cornet, John Pate on piano, Eugene Vineyard on tenor, Ronald Askew on guitar, Jeff Simon on bass, and Curtis Prince on drums. These players are in the larger group – which also features William Howell and Gerald Myrow on trombones, Vincent Carter and Steele Seales on saxes, and Kenneth Brass and Melvin Williams on trumpets. Titles include "Crabmeat", "Song For Suzanne", "Keishaz", "Give It One", "Listen Here", and "Spanish Samba". CD

Great work from a key period in the career of drummer Chico Hamilton – a time when he really went back to his roots after cutting some more mainstream albums in the late 70s – and started to experiment strongly with both his rhythmic approach, and a creative sense of instrumentation! The set features five albums, all pretty compelling – each presented in its own LP-style jacket. Titles include Reunion – which features a reunion of Chico's original 50s grop – with Buddy Collette on reeds, John Pisano on guitar, and Fred Katz on cello. The set also fetures two albums with Chico's Euphoria group – Arroyo and My Panamanian Friend – both with some nice Latin elements. Drummer Louis Hayes always finds a way of working with great groups – and here he's got an especially well-chosen lineup with Abraham Burton on tenor and Steve Nelson on vibes! Both players ring out with this strongly soulful vibe that's clearly inspired by the leader – Burton's very deep tones a perfect complement to some of the sharper, more modern lines from Nelson – driven strongly by the work of David Bryant on piano and the excellent Dezron Douglas on bass. Hayes' power can be felt strongly, even in mellower moments – and Nelson's oft-percussive approach to his tones makes for an excellent choice for the group. Titles include "Shape Shifting", "Groovin For Nat", "Soul Leo", "Simple Pleasures", "Vagabond Ron", and "Lou's Idea". CD

A real gem from Woody Shaw's greatest period – a very hip sextet session, recorded with Hayes, Cook, Shaw, and a rhythm section that includes Ronnie Matthews on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Guilhermo Franco on percussion. Tracks are long, and stretch out in that searching, modal style that Shaw was using a lot at the time – and although the Hayes/Cook team are listed as the leaders on the set, the record clearly owes a lot to Shaw's influence and style. Olindo (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
A Venezuelan group, one who are living in Paris – and work here with a criss-crossing of styles that really reflect that global journey! The music definitely has echoes of older Venezuelan styles, but maybe served up in a more impressionistic version – with a dream-like quality at times, as the instruments come together airily, often getting a nicely moody vibe in the production – which was partly done by Malcolm Catto, who also mixed the record. There's a really lovely female singer in the mix – with a lightness that's almost more like a bossa vocalist at times – and the instrumentation is both electric and acoustic, but often delivered at a level that make it hard to figure out where one begins and one ends. A tremendous collaboration between Madlib and drummer Karriem Riggins – both artists who are great enough on their own, but who really hit some new territory in this funky instrumental project! Riggins plays live drums, and Madlib throws in all this other instrumentation that really changes things up – bits of keyboards, flute, trumpet, and a whole heck of a lot more – but not used in ways that are conventional – as they more have that quality of sonically peppering the grooves, as you'd hear in Madlib's other production modes – but with a very different flavor here! There's a huge amount going on – all these little sounds and touches that are great – n titles that include "Les Jardins Esmeraldins", "Etude Montrachet", "Le Feu", "La Closerie", "Hommage A La Vielle Garde", "Merde", and "Deux Fakes Jayers". Jazz CommunityJazz Community Revisited ... LP
Sonorama (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
The jazz community here is pretty small – just a sextet, but one that had a huge impact on the Swiss jazz scene at the time! The group have a vibe that's maybe a bit earlier than the date of the material here – maybe more like some of the early 70s expressions from the American, German, and British jazz worlds – with lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and solos that are strong and freewheeling, but never too far outside – working with a really great sensibility between the members of the group. The music is dynamic, but never in a way that's forced or showoffy – and the set's filled with great originals by members of the group – who include Hans Kennel on trumpet, Paul Haag on trombone, Heiner Althaus on tenor, Armin Keil on piano, and Alex Bally on drums. Titles include "Snobben", "Keiler", "Welcome", "Incarnation", "Leaving The City", "Segara Village", "Fjorden", and "Paris Minor". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ahmed AbdullahLife's Force ... LP
About Time, 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". Ad LibsPresenting The Ad Libs (purple vinyl pressing) (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
ORG, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $23.99
A full vinyl release by The Ad Libs – a group known for their classic singles of the 60s, but one who never issued a full-length album of their own! This great little set more than corrects that fact – by bringing together 9 rare singles for the Blue Cat label, plus a few previously unissued tracks – tracks that never made it onto vinyl back in the 60s! The issued singles alone are great – a beautiful blend of one gal and four guy singers, handled with a style that's on the rougher edge of the New York style of soul at the time. Titles include "On The Corner", "Boy From New York City", "Appreciation", "Oo Wee Oo Gee", "Johnny My Boy", "The Slime", "Down Home Girl", "If She Wants Him", "He Ain't No Angel", "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone", "Kicked Around", and "I'm Just A Down Home Girl". Nat AdderleyGood Company ... CD
Challenge/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $16.99
The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

John AddisonBridge Too Far (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/Quartet (Spain), 1977. New Copy 2CDs ... $43.99
One of the greatest 70s moments from film composer John Addison – music scored for an all-star movie that was maybe a bit too all-star in the long run – but which features Addison really knocking it out of the park with the music! The vibe is more like the best 60s war dramas than you'd guess from the date – orchestrations that mix together bold passages of action with some more subtle dramatic moments – woodwinds and strings used by Addison with effortless ease, and often some nicely dark touches lurking in the deep backgrounds! Titles include "Human Roadblock", "Nijmegen Bridge", "Underground Resistance", "Before The Holocaust", "A Dutch Rhapsody", and "March Of The Paratroopers". 2CD edition – the original soundtrack album, plus a huge amount of bonus tracks – 35 more numbers from the original film recordings, wrapped up with very detailed notes as well! On-U Sound (UK), 1997. Used ... $9.99
Brilliant sounds from the On-U side of the universe – one of those key records that forever helped establish the production talents of Adrian Sherwood – and the unique blend of music he had to offer! The group here are a key part of the music – their blend of exotic percussion, melodica, guitar, and other sonic elements – but the record also features interesting contributions from post-punk/avant figures Steve Beresford and Nick Plytas, who come together in Sherwood's sonic blend with a beautiful mix of dark sounds, global elements, and lots of dubby echo! Titles include "Beriberi", "Snakeskin Tracksuit", "High Protein Snack", and "Breeding Space". CD

Sharhabil AhmedKing Of Sudanese Jazz ... LP
Habibi Funk (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.98
Really fantastic music, with a sound that's as hip as the image on the cover – not jazz as we know it here in the US, but a wonderful hybrid of our own musical roots with elements of Sudanese music – all delivered with a very postmodern mish-mash of styles, and a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The blend is a bit like some of the hybrids that were occurring in Ethiopian music at the time – and is maybe as unique as some of those classic recordings – with vocals that have a stretched-out style with lots of inflections, set up next to jagged rhythms that often have as much guitar in the groove as percussion, topped with offbeat reed passages that use lots of very cool tuning! Maybe the best release so far from this wonderful label – with titles that include "El Bambi", "Ya Shagini", "Aziza", "Malak Ya Saly", "Argos Farfish", and "Kamar Dawa". LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Aiken & FutureLiberation ... CD
Boom Shot, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99
You might remember Tony Aiken for his classic funk album Unity, from the 70s – and here, he's back again – after nearly 40 years away from the studio! The album's got a style that's a lot more reggae-influenced than before – maybe not totally a reggae record, given the other influences that Tony brings to bear – but a style that's definitely Jamaican overall, especially in the rhythms! The project features a big number of guests – as you can probably guess from the images on the front cover – all given a soulful spirit by Tony's lead. Package lists no song titles at all – but there are 10 tracks total. CD

Lorez AlexandriaAlexandria The Great ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1964. New Copy ... $22.99
A beautiful album from Lorez Alexanderia – one of her two excellent sessions for Impulse! The record was cut after Lorez recorded some great sides for the Argo label – and it works off the strength of those sides, taking her unique vocal approach, forged in R&B, but smoothed by jazz, into a whole new level of expression! The backing is great – small combo, with featured musicians who include Bunk Shank and Paul Horn on reeds, and Victor Feldman and Wynton Kelly on piano – all working with moody, soulful arrangements that are a perfect accompaniment to Lorez' beautiful voice. Includes the cuts "Get Me To The Church On Time", "Satin Doll", "Show Me", "The Best Is Yet to Come", "I'm Through With Love", and 5 more! CD

United Artists, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $13.99
"America's Greatest Drummers" in a percussion spectacular with a lot of loud exotic sounding tracks like "Boka Butu", "Ja Ki Lin", "Noma", and "Bambu". I don't know if we'd use the word "greatest" in describing the drummers – especially since the list of talents includes names like Sol Gubin and Don Lamond – but the set does have some nice playing by our man Charlie Persip, and isn't too bad from a lounge percussion perspective. Mose AllisonWestern Man/Mose In Your Ear ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1971/1972. Used ... $6.99
2 very groovy records by Mose Allison – both recorded during the early 70s, when he was hipping up his bag a bit! Western Man is a really amazing record – with some good funky tracks! The real key here is the fact that Mose plays electric piano and is working in a hip trio with Billy Cobham playing some funky and soulful drums! We don't know what kind of piano Mose is using, but on the tracks where he's playing the electric, it's got a jagged and raw kind of sound, almost recalling the one used on the Atlantic albums by Eugene McDaniels. Includes the great funky track "If You Only Knew", which has a real McDaniels kind of feel – plus the cuts "Western Man", "Mountains", "Ask Me Nice", "Night Club", and "Meadows". Mose In Your Ear is a live set – one that's a bit more back-to-basics than the first, but still grooving with a unique blend of New Orleans soul and Northern jazz influences, his own particular brand of music, timeless from the day it was born! The setting here is a live one, and Mose is playing with a trio that includes Clyde Flowers on bass and Eddie Charlton on drums. The album features a number of strong originals – including "Look What You Made Me Do", "Powerhouse", "I Don't Worry About A Thing", and "Don't Forget To Smile" – plus versions of "The Seventh Son" and "Fool's Paradise". AmadanaPortable CD Player ... Turntable
Amadana (Japan), 2020. New Item ... $124.99 149.99
A totally great little unit – and a great answer to the problem of the disappearing CD player! This tiny little CD player is easy to pack up and go – about the size of a stack of a few CDs, and equally light – with no internal battery unit or speakers – just a USB cord to provide power, and connection if needed – although the player also has bluetooth as well! This means that you can bring the player with you wherever you go, plug it into a car jack or conventional USB adaptor for a wall outlet – and either listen via headphones, or by streaming to a bluetooth speaker! The quality is great – and most immediately, the whole thing becomes a much-needed replacement for the automobile CD player, which is becoming a thing of the past. But it also allows you to take your CDs out on the back porch, stream through a blue tooth speaker, and enjoy a lot better fidelity than you'd get from your phone or MP3 player – plus a much bigger selection of music if you have a CD collection like us! The unit has a nice woodgrain finish, easy to handle controls, and a slim design that will make it easy to take anywhere – and the bluetooth connection means that you can play CDs in any car with a bluetooth feature! Comes with a USB power cord, and also features a headphone jack (also useful to connect to a speaker), and SPDIF connection, if you have that on your standard stereo. Turntable

A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". A holy grail of 70s African Funk – and not just for the unusual look of the cover! The set's a really unique one – almost rootsier than most of the better-known Ghanian grooves of the time, but funkier too – with a brilliant blend of raw percussion, quirky basslines, and some smoking horn parts that are a lot more American soul and funk than the usual 70s African groove! The whole thing's stunning all the way through – a record that totally informs an understanding of its generation, yet in ways that no other record can touch. Wonderful all the way through, with not a bit of filler – and all cuts are right on the money for any fan of African funk! Warm, mellow, and completely sublime – the mighty America at the height of their powers – working with a quality that nobody else can match! The trio wrap together all the best ideas that were bubbling under in the LA scene of the late 60s – vocal harmonies, studio perfection, and even touches of rootsy instrumentation – yet find a space to work all these elements together in a rich sound that's completely unique – amazingly understated at times, despite a near-perfect level of production! The whole album's great – even their original version of "Muskrat Love" – nestled in here next to "Rainbow Song", "Submarine Ladies", "Molten Love", "Green Monkey", and "Goodbye". CD

Bear Family/Decca (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $129.99 149.99
The first-ever package to ever do justice to the influential talents of Bill Anderson – one of the more important songwriters of the 50s country scene – and a budding singer who helped introduce whole new modes of expression to the music! Bill's tunes were sung by many – and had a depth of honest, heartfelt emotion that pushed country even past the important work of the initial postwar wave of talents – and his own recordings also included key use of spoken passages – the kind of asides that were really well-suited to Anderson's down-to-earth vocals, and which helped lay the groundwork for more complicated country tunes in years to come! The set features every track from Bill's eight albums for Decca, plus non-LP tracks from singles, duets with Jan Howard, unissued studio tracks, and even his rare singles for the TNT label – a huge package of 126 tracks in all, with detailed notes in the best Bear Family tradition.
