Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... CD
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". Bill CosbyWhen I Was A Kid ... LP
Uni, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Bill Cosby recalls the days of his youth in a set of classic routines that include "My Brother Russell", "Dogs", "Frogs", "My Father", "My Boy Scout Troup", and "Buck Jones" – all delivered with Fat Albert-era charm! Despite Albert's appearance on the cover, there's none of the music from the soundtrack on the LP – but Cosby's lively performance more than makes up for that fact! LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... CD
Uni/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... $9.99
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. CD

Eric B & RakimFollow The Leader ... LP
Uni, 1988. Near Mint- ... $43.99
No sophomore slump for the second Eric B & Rakim album – benchmark hip hop of the first order and up there with the best of all time! Following up Paid In Pull was no easy task, and the appropriately titled Follow The Leader makes it look easy, completing one of the great one-two punches in hip hop history by bring in a richer, fuller, more skillfully creative sound, without sacrificing the dense, hard hitting, sparely funk greatness of the debut. Includes the awesome title track, plus "Lyrics Of Fury", "Microphone Fiend", "The R", "Musical Massacre", "No Competition", "Just A Beat", "Eric B Never Scared", "Put Your Hands Together", "To The Listeners" and "Beats For The Listeners". Love UnlimitedFrom A Girl's Point Of View ... LP
Uni/Mercury, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Great stuff – the beginning of the Love Unlimited dynasty! As we're sure you know, Barry White produced this little gem of a record, and the album was a key proving ground for many of his stone cold soul production ideas before he went off and started doing the lead vocals himself. The White genius is very firmly in place – and is fantastic here mixed with female lead vocals – with this strong current of soul at the bottom, sweeping strings on the top, and a surprisingly badass sound that really makes the record different than most other girl group records. The trio of lovelies that makes up Love Unlimited do a perfect job with Barry's arrangements – singing heavenly harmonies on tracks like "If This World Were Mine", "Is It Really True Boy – Is It Really Me", and the stunning "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love", which has one of the best telephone monologues you'll ever hear on a soul track! Really great work from Orange Colored Sky – one of the grooviest groups to record on late 60s Uni! The album's got a style that mixes the rougher harmonies of the post-Beach Boys groups with some nice instrumentation that has a bit of a Buckinghams bounce. The tunes are all originals, composed by the organist of the group – and they've got a great mix of sunshine and psyche pop – never really too ambitious, and with lots of rough hooks that have the same compelling quality as the Left Banke at their best! Titles include "The Sun & I", "Just Like Humpty Dumpty", "I'm Taking Her To Dinner", "LA", "Girl Of My Dreams", and "Don't Do As I Do". LP, Vinyl record album

Late 60s easy orchestrations from the George Wilson ensemble – arranged by Richard Rome, and kind of a blend of piano-styled numbers (ala Roger Williams) and more strictly orchestral ones. Classic work from Hugh Masekela – and the album that pushed him over the top! The record features his version of "Grazin In The Grass", a runaway instrumental hit when it was issued – and a sly little groover that was based upon some earlier South African pop melodies that Hugh copped from his roots. The group's a tight little quintet with Al Abreu on tenor and soprano sax, William Henderson on piano, Chuck Carter on drums, and Henry Franklin on bass. The whole thing's great – and tracks include "Stop", "Bajabula Bonke", "There Are Seeds To Sow", "Vuca", "Almost Seedless", and "No Face, No Name, and No Number". LP, Vinyl record album

Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the 8 minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". Fantastic sunshine pop from the Strawberry Alarm Clock – an album that's a bit trippy, a lot sunny – and just the right mix of psych and harmony soul! There's some wonderful overlooked nuggets on the record – tunes that go past their chart hits, and which really remind us that the group was definitely a cut above most of their contemporaries – with these edges and surprises that really keep things interesting. The mighty George Tipton helped arrange some of the best cuts – and titles include the massive "Barefoot In Baltimore" – a perfect bridge between the earlier 60s harmony sounds, and the headier mode of the later generation – as well as the tracks "Sea Shell", "Lady Of The Lake", "A Million Smiles Away", "Shallow Impressions", and "Eulogy". Nicely messed up funk from Marvin Holmes & The Uptights – the kind of southern-styled party group that would play plenty big on the live scene in the late 60s! The main focus of the group is the instrumentation – a very tightly crafted showband type of groove, with fast riffing guitars, heavy horns, and lots of snapping percussion at the bottom. Vocals are more in the "call" type mode – and done in a stoned-out, Charles Wright sort of style! ✨✧ Cal Tjader & Eddie PalmieriEl Sonido Nuevo ... LP
Verve, 1966. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – but here, teamed up with Eddie Palmieri, his music gets a great New York infusion – and one that's even a bit more contemporary than some of Tjader's previous 60s Latin efforts. Eddie's sharp-edged piano is totally great – ringing out with some especially bold tones – and other players on the set include Julian Priester and Mark Weinstein on trombones, Ismael Quintana on percussion, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, and George Castro on flute. Arrangements are by Eddie and Claus Ogerman – and titles include "Los Jibaros", "Ritmo Uni", "Picadillo", "Unidos", "El Sonido Nuevo", and "Guajira En Azul". LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerSpiritual Unity ... CD
ESP, 1964. Used ... $6.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". Art BlakeyDrums Around The Corner (previously unissued material) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958/1959. Used ... $19.99
Pounding! This is the long-awaited re-release of a lost session that Blakey recorded in 1958, with a triple-drum rhythm group that included himself, Philly Joe Jones, and Roy Haynes – plus some additional conga work by Ray Barretto. Unlike other Blakey "drum orgy" sessions, though, this one's got a much straighter jazz feel – with plenty of solo space for trumpeter Lee Morgan and pianist Bobby Timmons. The drums work together in fantastic interplay – with Haynes' lyricism, Blakey's crackle, and Jones' raw power all providing perfect complement to each other while Morgan solos freely out front as the only horn (a role that he rarely ever got to take!) The set also includes 2 amazing other tracks that feature only bass and drum (not drum n bass!) interplay between Blakey and the late Paul Chambers – making for a total of 8 incredible tracks in all, with titles that include "Lee's Tune", "Blakey's Blues", "Lover", and "Drums In the Rain". Great stuff, and with notes by Kenny Washington, too! CD

Players include Bobby Timmons on piano, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a killer lineup that's in really classic form here – driven on nicely by Blakey's drums and bass work by Jymie Merritt. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", with Blakey thundering through impeccably – plus the tracks "Yama", "Kozo's Waltz", and a version of Timmons' great "So Tired". Scotti Bros, 1993. Used ... $2.99
James Brown makes a big nod to the younger generation here – by letting Jazzie B and C&C produce some of the tracks on the record – all with the expected contemporary funk vibe you might expect! The best numbers here are really those done by Jazzie B – as they've often got a Soul II Soul approach to funk – one that's certainly early 90s, but which also has more of a respect for the best older elements in James' vocals, and never tries to overpower them too much. Jazzie sets up some rhythms that are often spare and simple, but quite effective – and with a warmth that's missing from most other James Brown albums of the time. JB also produced a few tracks himself, and titles include "Mine All Mine", "Just Do It", "Can't Get Any Harder", "Watch Me", "Show Me Your Friends", "Everybody's Got A Thing", "How Long", and "Moments". One of the coolest albums ever recorded by the legendary Saravah Records label in France – and that's saying a heck of a lot, because just about every one of their records was pretty darn cool! This set is based around the music of cellist Jean-Charles Capon – who isn't exactly in "solitude" on the set, as it features duets with percussionist Pierre Favre – who's completely fantastic throughout! Capon plays his instrument in both plucked and bowed modes – probably more of the latter – while Favre adds in a multiplicity of different sounds and tones – not just percussion, but bells, cymbals, and many other tuneful elements that really make the record shine! As with most Saravah records, the sound isn't easy to categorize – maybe improvised jazz, but a lot more as well – with titles that include "La Pause Cafe", "Changez A Strasbourg St Denis", "Terrain Vague", "Mauvaises Rencontres", "Reve D'Oasis", "Sommeil Urbain", and "Perdu Dans La Cite". The My Conception session was originally recorded in 1959, when Clark was at the height of his powers – but it was never issued until 1980, and even then, only in Japan, where it soon went out of print. The set's got Clark at his most lyrical – playing with a lot of hardbop fire, but also some touches of Horace Silver soulfulness, a perfect match for session-mates Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley. Mobley's in particularly fine form at this point, and the whole set's a real winner – even more so since it's paired here with another lost session, one from 1957 that features Clifford Jordan on tenor and Kenny Burrell on guitar. There's a total of 9 brilliantly remastered tracks on the CD – and the set's one of the best bunch of tracks we've ever heard from the great lost piano talent of Sonny Clark. Titles include "Little Sonny", "Junka", "Blues Blue", "Minor Meeting", and "Royal Flush". CD

Clarke Boland Big BandJazz Is Universal ... LP
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good ... $6.99
Great early genius from the Clarke Boland Big Band – proof that Kenny and Francy were onto something great, right from the start! The album really has the group hitting the heights of their MPS years – stretching out way past earlier big band modes, into the hip mix of rhythms and soulful solos that made the ensemble unlike any other group in the 60s – a really groundbreaking approach to their music, delivered by a range of top-shelf players! Arrangements are by Boland, who also plays piano – and other group members include Benny Bailey and Jimmy Deuchar on trumpets, Derek Humble on alto sax, Carl Drewo and Zoot Sims on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax and flute, and Ake Persson on trombone – plus rhythm from the rock-solid duo of Jimmy Woode on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include the Latin-tinged "Los Bravos", and more great originals by Boland – including "Volutes", "The Styx", "Charon's Ferry", and "Box 703 Washington DC" – plus versions of "Gloria" and "Last Train From Overbrook". The last proper LP by San Francisco psych rock trailblazers Country Joe & The Fish – and the only album since late 60s with the classic early line-up back together! It's good stuff too, recorded for Fantasy with an unpretentious ear for country rock and unfussy folk-blues-rock hybrid style that's reminiscent enough of their late 60s roots without trying to too hard replicate the strident 60s lyricism. Includes "Come To The Reunion", "Time Flies By", "Stateline, Nevada", "Dirty Claus Rag", "Thunderbird", "Gibson's Song", "Insufficient Funds", "Dreams" and more. CD

Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Catchy 70s pop from Gino Cunico – just the right sort of songs that would have sounded wonderful coming out of an AM radio in your car – with that kind of production that somehow managed to make that tiny speaker on the dashboard sound so much stronger than it was! Gino puts himself right out there with the tunes – not afraid to be a crossover crooner, with maybe a bit of a Bee Gees influence in his approach – amidst the well-crafted strings and orchestrations in the background. Most numbers are pretty hook-heavy – and titles include the hit "Can't Smile Without You", plus "Daydreamer", "Can't Hold On Any Longer", "Emptiness", "Don't Throw It All Away", and "When I Wanted You". Joey DefrancescoIn The Key Of The Universe ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A spiritual surprise – and a record that we really didn't expect! Joey DeFrancesco's really got a great edge this time around, thanks in part to some incredibly strong saxophone work on the album from Troy Roberts and the legendary Pharoah Sanders! We'll be honest in saying that we first saw Pharoah's name on the cover, and were marveling at his sounds when the soprano sax came in on the first track – but then we picked up the record, and realized that Roberts handles most of the saxophone on the first half of the record – and we were further blown away by his combination with Joey's work on the organ! DeFrancesco really seems to be on fire here – maybe driven by Troy's strong edge, which is a sublime pairing – and the duo get some equally wonderful drums from Billy Hart, who keeps things moving all the way through – as the album soars to the skies, in a way we're not use to hearing from Joey. Sanders comes in as the album hits the halfway mark, and lends his tremendous tenor to three very spiritual tunes – and Sammy Figueroa also plays a bit of percussion on some tracks as well. Titles include "Soul Perspective", "Awake & Blissed", "In The Key Of The Universe", "Inner Being", "Vibrations In Blue", "And So It Is", and a remake of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". CD

A fantastic package that finally gives these recordings their proper due – one that takes the cuts that were issued on the albums Iron Man and Conversations (plus a million cheapo packages over the years) – and restores them to their original mono, right from the tapes – then adds in 85 more minutes of never issued material! The tracks here are a perfect balance of Dolphy in his final year – with some spiritual jazz currents, but still a strong sense of swing – with a fantastic lineup that includes Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, Clifford Jordan on soprano, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and both JC Moses and Charles Moffett on drums – almost a who's-who of people who would go onto shape the face of jazz in years to come. Titles include "A Personal Statement", "Ode To Charlie Parker", "Iron Man", "Come Sunday", "Burning Spear", "Muses For Richard Davis", "Alone Together", "Love Me", and "Jitterbug Waltz" – plus a number of other different versions of tunes. 3CD set comes with a 100 page booklet – featuring photos, essays, and interviews with Sonny Simmons, Sonny Rollins, Nicole Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and David Murray. A contemporary album, but one that's got the feel of a funky big band session from years back – no surprise, as Dennis Dreith and many of these players brought plenty of that magic to the LA scene back in the day! The style here hearkens towards some of the MPS or US albums of the style from the 70s – with mostly acoustic elements from the horns, held together by rhythms from electric bass, drums, and keyboards – all to forge sharp ensemble passages that step aside for a bit when the soloist comes in – yet all still while nicely holding onto the groove. The charts are great – full of color and light – and soloists include Andy Macintosh on alto, Ron King and Dan Fornero on trumpet, Gary Herbig on tenor, and John Goux on guitar. Paramount/Quartet (Spain), 1963. New Copy ... $24.99
Two 60s sex comedy soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! George Duning is at his grooviest on the music for Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed – a great Dean Martin film from 1963, scored by Duning with a mixture of jazzy modes – often with woodwinds that are surprisingly expressive, from comedic dips and turns, to passages that are slightly sexy, or more emotive. Most tracks are relatively short – but work together well over the course of the two dozen numbers included in the package – all very visual in structure and sound! Next up is Wives & Lovers – scored by the lesser-known Lyn Murray, with an equally great use of jazzy elements – especially woodwinds, played by a lineup that includes a number of great west coast saxophone talents! The tunes have no trouble mixing a bit of sentiment with a touch of class, using the jazzier elements in a really great maturation of 50s west coast cool – one that still works well, even when a bit of strings come into the mix. There's also some great piano lines played by Jimmy Rowles – and the CD features 21 tracks from the film, including some unusual bonus material! CD

They're not the same FCC that controls the airwaves in the US – but instead, the Funky Communications Committee – who work here with some great southern production from the team of Clayton Ivey and Terry Woodford! The record's got a glow that's kind of post-Muscle Shoals – maybe a bit more mainstream overall, but still showing the blend of soulful elements that came from that scene – which makes the whole thing way more of a soul set than you'd guess from the look of the group! The rhythms are great on many numbers – maybe not all-out funk, but certainly crafted with funky currents – and these guys have a way of harmonizing on the hooks that's mighty nice too. G Unit/Interscope, 2003. Used ... $1.99
We've been fans of 50 since we first heard the brilliant "How To Rob" single a couple years back, and nothing about the massive, huge, unbelievable level of popularity he's achieved, or the myriad underground singles and mixtapes has done a damn thing to change our minds about him or his G Unit crew. With much less at stake with this G Unit debut than what was awaiting the Get Rich, Or Die Trying LP early this year, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and the crew just do what they do here. It's hit and miss, but the best of these kind of carefree, loose, and hell, almost nostalgic ghetto anthems makes for what would be a guilty pleasure – except we don't feel the least bit guilty about it. Fantastic soul duets between Marvin & Tammi Terrell – a landmark pair in 60s soul music, and easily one of the best male/female duos in pop music ever! Marvin and Tammi have a way of singing together that makes you feel like they're speaking the tunes, not singing them – a personal, intimate quality that's almost as if we're sneaking in on them behind closed doors – and not hearing their voices cast out in front of full backing in the Motown studios. A beautiful album of keyboard-heavy tracks – issued by a small sound library label in France during the 70s, with a title that translates as "the universe of the sea"! As you might guess, there's a nice underwater vibe to the record – a sound that's similar to some of the other great sea-driven recordings of the late 60s and early 70s – especially the work of Sven Libaek, who really seems to inform the style here – although Dominique Guiot's approach is much more heavy on the keyboards! Yet despite the use of minimoog, mellotron, organ, clavinet, and other keys – the sound here is always warm, and never too electronic – always glowing around the edges, with a watery richness that's wonderful – offset a bit by acoustic guitar and other elements, a bit like some of the soundtracks of Francois De Roubaix. Factory/Mute, Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $42.99 45.98
A really great collection of work from one of the coolest, most compelling groups to record for the legendary Factory Records label – a combo who were contemporaries of Joy Division and New Order, but who had a very different sound! A Certain Ration – or ACR for short – had a wicked approach that was part funk, part punk – but often more soulful than contemporaries like Pigbag or Bush Tetras – a quality that only advanced as the group aged a bit, and learned to play their instruments even better than before! Factory was very committed to ACR right from the start – and in addition to key albums, they also recorded the group in many ways, which also yielded plenty of unusual tracks for singles, and plenty of unreleased material too. This package brings together all the best of those moments – and features 53 tracks that are a huge addition to their smaller catalog of LP releases – titles that include the previously unissued "Houses In Motion (demo)", "And Then Again (another version)", "Piu Lento (Peel Session)", "Nostromo A Go Go (demo)", "Backs To The Wall (demo)", "It's Trippin When I'm Fine", "Mello (JD 800 perc mix)", "Teko 4 An Answer (120 bpm)", "Samba 123 (demo)", "Some Day (ACR rework)", "Say What You Mean (unfinished demo)", "WSLU", and "Happy Meal" – plus "The Planet", "Turn Me On (7" edit)", "Fever 103 (Greetings 4 version)", "Loosen Up Your Mind", "All Night Party", "Thin Boys", "Blown Away", "Funaezekea", "Abracadubra", "Sommadub", "Guess Who (12" mix)", "Tumba Rumba", "Knife Slits Water (12" version)", "There's Only This", "Si Fermir O Grido (Touch cassette version)", "Brazilia (long)", "The Runner (Greetings 4 version)", and "Sounds Like Something Dirty". A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". Argentine rock, recorded in Paris during the early 70s – a really unusual expatriate album that comes off with a sound that's pretty unique! Miguel Abuelo clearly draws inspiration from the heavier rock that was showing up in South America at the time – yet the overall execution of the record also shares some of the warmer, more optimistic qualities that marked some of the French groups during the period – occasional folksy elements, and a post-68 positivity that holds on even when things get somewhat trippy and jammy. Instrumentation is heavy on guitars – both acoustic and electric – and the longer tracks really take off with some wild sounds, especially when bits of moog or electronics are dropped into the mix. A great collection of cuts by the mid 60s psych-garage-soul girl group Ace Of Cups for the Big Beat label – 16 tunes in all from a great lost group that never even put out an official LP! The Ace Of Cups come from the same vintage as groups like Love and others in the 60s Cali scene, but they also shared influences with the earliest of the early Pink Floyd. The Cups were a fixture on the psychedelic ballroom circuit of mid-to-late 60s, and toured with a swirling mix of turgid blues chords and space trip psychedelia. Almost all of these tunes were previously unissued – only now seeing the light of day! Includes "Music", "Glue", "Taste Of One", "Stones", "Pretty Boy", "Waller Street Blues", and "Simplicity". Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Yet the appeal of their vocals is undeniable – sometimes almost with a jazzy current that's an nice contrast to the garagey organ in the mix – and with the kind of quality that would have really blossomed, had these guys gotten the chance to record in the same sort of soft rock setting as groups like America or Three Dog Night. A sweet little set – one that brings together some of the grooviest cuts ever recorded by Japanese singer Yasuko Agawa – one of the leading lights of the overseas scene at the end of the 70s! Yasuko's got this really special blend of styles – a bit jazz, a bit soul, often polished a bit in production, but never in a too commercial way – and occasionally set up with some Latin or Brazilian touches in the rhythms, which makes for some mighty nice grooves! Yasuko always able to transcend both the more AOR city pop styles of the time, and some of the more conventional Japanese soul – a very hip singer, as you'll hear on these 19 tracks that include "LA Nights", "New York Afternoon", "Skindo Le Le", "Seabird", "Velas", "Zanzibar", "Pardon My English", "The Universe Is Calling You", "Island Breeze", "Until You Tell Me", "It's My House", "Take A Holiday", and "In The Name Of Love". Air PocketFly On ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1975. Used ... $11.99
A warm and soulful set of fusion tracks – issued only in Japan, but recorded by a hip group from the US! Air Pocket features the Fowler Brothers – Walt, Bruce, Ed, and Steve – on trumpet, trombone, bass, and alto, respectively – plus drummer Chester Thompson, guitarist Mike Miller, and pianist Stu Goldberg, who really plays some great moog, clavinet, and electric keys on the set! Tunes are well-written – a bit choppy, but never too jamming, and really just done in this nice blocky way that creates a slightly funky approach, and a good degree of soul. Titles include "Elephant's Graveyard", "Hi Lo Redic", "Colors For Marvin", "Night's Move", and "Becky". CD

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... LP
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 32.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". ✨✧ Aksak MaboulUn Peu De L'Ame Des Bandits (with bonus CD) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 18.98
One of our favorite mixing of modes from the old school – a tremendous second album from the legendary Aksak Maboul! The record mixes arty playfulness with some rootsier elements – bits of Eastern instrumentation, jazz, improvisation, and even some post-punk elements – all in a way that makes for one of the most creative recordings of its time – a set that easily provides key inspiration for more recent genre-crossing acts like this! There's a bit of Y or Ze Records whimsy at times – but the end result is much deeper, and much more compelling– as you'd expect from a group that features Fred Frith on guitar, Chris Cutler on drums, Marc Hollander and Michel Berkmans on reeds, and Denis Van Hecke on a range of cool cellos! Each tune has a slightly different flavor, but there's still a really unified feel to the record too – one of those European projects that comes together like nothing you'd hear from the US. Titles include "Geistige Nacht", "A Modern Lesson", "Palmiers En Pots" and "Cinema". LP, Vinyl record album

AkwassaIn The Groove ... CD
Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99
An interesting turning point for this funky Nigerian group of the 70s – as the set's still got the chunky rhythms of previous efforts, but also shows a touch of influence from reggae on some of the grooves – as well as some very cool use of keyboard touches that give the whole thing some nice electric currents! The sound is still nice and raw overall, and some of the best cuts have a straight funk approach that's really universal – grooves of the sort that you'd hear on an American funky 45, but maybe produced with that compelling sense of echo that makes so many west African records from the time sound a bit trippy. Vocals are in English throughout, and titles include "Everybody's Getting On", "Give Me Some Funk", "Jam All Night", "Make Your Self", "We Believe In Peace", and "No One Else". CD

Lorez AlexandriaFor Swingers Only ... CD
Argo/Dusty Groove, 1963. Used ... $13.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Lorez Alexandria – an ultra-hip singer who recorded for Impulse and King, but who sounds especially wonderful on this rare date for Chess Records! The album's got a groove that definitely lives up to its title – a jazzy, bouncy sort of rhythm that's definitely "for swingers only", and which is a nice contrast to overdone torch or standard jazz vocal modes. Alexandria's singing is completely sublime – quite fluid, yet with a soulful depth that's really amazing – and her backing combo is equally hip – a group led by John Young on piano, and also featuring George Eskirdge on guitar, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Phil Thomas on drums, and Ronald Wilson on flute and tenor – an obscure player whose reed work really makes the album sparkle! The song choices are great too – a mix of some under-recorded gems and a few blue-toned classics – all redone amazingly by Lorez with a sound that's quite unique. Titles include her classic Argo reading of "Baltimore Oriole", which begins with an amazing drum/bass passage that's worth the price of the album alone – and other tracks include "The End Of A Love Affair", "Baltimore Oriole", "All Or Nothing At All", "Mother Earth", "Love Look Away", and "Traveling Down A Lonely Road". Trio (Japan), 1977. Near Mint- ... $59.99
An ultra-hip record from Lorez Alexandria – one of her grooviest albums ever, and a set that was only ever issued in Japan! The set features Lorez hitting some of the hippest, most rhythmic modes of her career – working with jazzy backing arranged by Gildo Mahones and Art Hillery, filled with soul and spirit, and really inspiring Lorez to hit those snapping sort of grooves that make her best tracks so great! Titles include her classic take on "Send In The Clowns" – a real jazz dance classic that goes far beyond its roots – plus the titles "Maybe This Time", "Where Is Love", "Change Partners", "One", "Come Sunday", "Bright Lights & You", and "You Leave Me Breathless". AlkaholiksLikwidation ... LP
RCA/HHV (Germany), 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $31.99 32.98
A late 90s classic from the 'Liks – with track or skit appearances by Xzibit, Whoridas, Nas, King Tee, ODB, Keith Murray, LL Cool J, and Lootpack – star-studded to say the least and a vital snapshot of a later year in the golden age of hip hop! All credit to the core Alkaholiks trio of J-Ro, Tash and producer E-Swift for the fresh to this day vibe, mixing gritty boombap, raw rhymes and good time party vibe all together mode that was unique to themselves at the time – but the guests deliver, too. Madlib produced a couple of tracks, given this one a transitional historical facet, kind of setting a building block for the next generation if innovative rap. Includes "Likwidation", "Off the Wall", "Hip Hop Drunkies", "off The Wall", "Fool The Real", "Rockin' WIth The Best", "Killin' It", "Captain Hook", "Funky Style", "Contents Unda Pressure" and more. ✨✧ JD AllenBarracoon ... CD
Savant, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
One of the boldest records we've ever heard from tenorist JD Allen – a set that has him playing in trio formation, with just bass and drums – borrowing a page from the modernist years of Sonny Rollins, but pushing even more forward with his sound and style! The tracks aren't totally free, but are very open – and in addition to the drums of Nic Cacioppo, the group shifts between electric and acoustic bass work from Ian Kenselaar, who uses the electric on about a third of the record – making for a really nice contrast with the all-acoustic moments. There's a rumbling intensity to the whole record – which crackles with energy throughout – and titles include "Eye Scream", "Barracoon", "G Sus", "The Goldilocks Zone", "13", and "Communion". CD

Tony AllenSource ... CD
Blue Note, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 14.98
One of the coolest records in years from the legendary Tony Allen – and that's saying a lot, given that his legacy includes famous work as a drummer with Fela Kuti, and a much more recent run of very experimental recordings! This set has Tony soaring out on Blue Note – and working with more of the jazz currents you'd expect from the label – while still, in the Allen legacy, really going for something fresh and unique – as spontaneously creative as it is outright funky! There's definitely some Afro Funk rhythms on the album, but there's also a fuller brace of horns, dedicated to painting sound in rich colors and tones – alongside riffing guitar, organ and keyboard lines, and Tony's own mighty drums – which keep things moving in a straight ahead way, while also filling in the rhythms with wonderfully complicated bits too. The album's as rich and beautiful as you might hope – with titles that include "Cool Cats", "On Fire", "Wolf Eats Wolf", "Life Is Beautiful", "Ewajo", "Moody Boy", "Bad Roads", and "Woro Dance". CD

Luther AllisonLuther's Blues (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Universal, 1974. Used ... $3.99
One of the only blues records you'll ever find on Motown – and a mostly straight blues affair with a hard electric sound to it. The album's mostly in the early Alligator Records camp – but there's a few nice funky cuts, like "Now You Got It" and "Into My Life", which both have strong rhythm backing, and a smoother groove that kind of cuts the blues quotient a bit. That's a good thing for us, in case you couldn't tell! CD

Laurindo AlmeidaConcierto De Aranjuez ... LP
Inner City, 1979. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Guitarist Laurindo Almeida returns to a bit of his roots here – but he also shows off a lot of the jazz experience he's picked up along the way! The album features Almeida working solo on acoustic guitar – although possibly overdubbed alongside himself at times – and while the set begins with the serious title composition, things never get too much in the realm of classical guitar – and instead have Almeida skirting many different styles, including a bit of bossa guitar – and working with this uniquely echoey recording style that makes each note resonate with a richly expressive sound! Titles include "Cool Cat Keeps Coat On", "Holiday For Strings", "Songs From Black Orpheus", "The Summer Knows", and "Star Dust". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mexican pressing on Jazz Unlimited.)
