CerroneBest Of Cerrone ... LP
Malligator/Because (France), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.99
A tremendous collection of work from the legendary Cerrone – one of the key forces in French disco of the 70s, and an artist who went on to have a huge impact on the sound of the dancefloor for decades to come! Cerrone's a master of minimal, repetitive rhythms – often stretched out on his early singles, and peppered with similar keyboards and electric elements to Giorgio Moroder's music of the time – but a bit warmer, sexier, and Frenchier overall! This set offers up 19 of Cerrone's classics from back in the day – many of which are served up in special funky edits for the package – with titles that include "Je Suis Music", "Supernature", "The Impact", "Give Me Love", "Freak Connection", "Love In C Minor", "You Are The One", "Bodytalk", "Hooked On You", "Rocket In The Pocket", "Club Underworld", and "Look For Love" – plus "2nd Chance", which features a guest appearance from Tony Allen. Erle Stanley GardnerShills Can't Cash Chips ... Book
Hard Case Crime, 1961. New Copy ... $4.99 12.95
Great work from Perry Mason scribe Erle Stanley Gardner – one of the few books he wrote under the name of AA Fair, and snuck out at a time when his real name was associated with the popular series on TV! The book features the team of male/female detectives Cool & Lam, pursuing plenty of twists and turns on a case that started as an insurance investigation, the moves deeper into the seedy underworld of the early 60s – captured in perfect pulp prose by Gardner! The whole thing's got a vibe and pacing that really lives up to the lurid image on the cover – and the softcover book is 219 pages. Book

Ted LewisGBH (hardcover) ... Book
Soho, 1980. New Copy ... $6.99 26.95
A great lost book from the man who gave the world Get Carter – and like that classic, a seminal bit of British crime from one of the masters of the genre! Ted Lewis doesn't write drawing room mysteries – he writes the kind of gritty, street-sensitive stuff that we love in the films of Martin Scorcese, or the books of Richard Stark – riveting story that pulls no punches, and opens up the secrets of the British underworld! And yet Lewis also isn't the type to fall into Kray Twins-type hyperbole – as the story here is very down to earth and honest – about London pornographer George Fowler coming to the slow realization that he's being undermined from within his organization. The narrative shifts between past and present in a wonderful way – and the quality of the book is every bit as wonderful as Lewis' seminal Get Carter. 323 pages, hardcover. Book

Lightnin' RodHustlers Convention ... LP
Celluloid, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Fantastic stuff – incredibly hard and incredibly funky, and a masterpiece all the way through! Long before there was any talk of gangster rap, Jalal of the Last Poets recorded this album of gamblin', pimpin', and hard double dealin'. It's a fantastic album-long ride through the dark side of the black underworld, and is the aural equivalent of a blacksploitation flick. Kool & The Gang provided the music – and Jalal tells the whole story throughout, in the same hard rappin' style he used with the Last Poets! The record's an undisputed classic, and includes the sample classic "Sport", plus loads of other righteous funky cuts like "Spoon", "Grit's Den", and "Sentenced To The Chair"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PylonChomp (red & black vinyl pressing) ... LP
DB/New West, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record from the Athens, GA scene of the early 80s – served up by a group who maybe never hit the fame of REM or B-52s, but who are maybe even groovier overall! Pylon have a strong bassline that almost seems borrowed from the Brit post-punk years, but also mix it with some catchier lyrics by a female singer – but one who's often nicely down in the mix, right alongside the jagged guitars and splashy drums – all of which create a sound that's like the best of the indie underworld of the period! The group almost feel like they would have been right at home on Factory or Rough Trade – which is partly why they maybe got more attention overseas than here – and the titles include "Italian Movie Theme", "Spider", "Yo Yo", "Buzz", "No Clocks", "Altitude", and "M Train". LP, Vinyl record album
(Indie exclusive limited to 500 copies – on red & black vinyl and in a die-cut sleeve!)

✨✧ Nduduzo MakhathiniModes Of Communication – Letters From The Underworlds ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record, and one that's every bit as righteous as you might guess from its cover and title – maybe even more so, as there's a hugely collaborative energy to the whole record, a sense of group spirit that's not even hinted at on the front! Nududuzo Makhathini is listed as the "composer and conceptualizer" on most tracks – and that's a great way of putting it, as there's definitely a core concept to most of the record – which is then taken up by an array of other musicians and singers, and lifted up with energy that maybe makes the whole thing one of the most spiritual releases on Blue Note since the days of Eddie Gale! Makhathini plays piano, and other musicians include Logan Richardson on alto, LInda Sikhakane on tenor, Ndabo Zulu on trumpet, and Ayanda Sikade on drums – used in a shifting lineup with other players, and joined by voices on some tracks – so that the record has this amazing blend of spiritual and South African jazz modes, with some traces of contemporary soul. A wonderfully uplifting record – with titles that include "Beneath The Earth", "Saziwa Nguwe", "On The Other Side", "Shine", "Indawu", "Umlotha", "Unyazi", and "Saziwa Nguwe". CD
