Meirelles & Os Copa 5Samba Jazz!! ... CD
Dubas (Brazil), 2002. Used ... $19.99
A new album by this bossa jazz legend – 40 years in the making, and well worth the wait! Meirelles calls the set a sequel to his famous 1964 album O Som, and honestly, listening to the session, it sounds as if only a few months have transpired between the two records, not a few decades! The recording's done in a really classic bossa style – straight ahead jazz at the core, lots of nice comping rhythms, sweet piano licks, and great interplay upfront in the horn section – all filtered down into Meirelles' uniquely styled bossa approach, clean, clear, and wonderfully breezy! The album features the great Robertinho Silva on drums – and titles include "Pinta La", "Ultima Pagina", "Copa 5", "Lembrancas", "Samba Jazz", and "Sudeste". CD

SolaUn Muneco De Madera ... LP
RCA/Be With (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A really groovy little record, and one that's got all sorts of very cool things going on – sweet female vocals from Sola that almost feel like they're lifted from a French record, and not a Spanish language set – mixed with orchestrations that have a nice undercurrent of funk – a bit sound library/soundtrack, with all these very cool flavors and elements, almost like some very cool Italian record from around the same time! Manuel Alejandro is the maestro of the set – writer, arranger, and director – and Sola really fits his groove – on titles that include "Soy Rebelde", "Un Muneco De Madera", "Oye Mama Oye Papa", "En Ellos Creo", "Tabu Tabu", "Unete A Mi", "Bada Bada Ba", and "La Ultima Palabra". Piero UmilianiLa Ragazza Dalla Pelle Di Luna (with bonus CD) ... LP
Omicron/Schema (Italy), 1970. New Copy LP & CD (reissue)... $26.99 32.98
Amazing work from the legendary Piero Umiliani – a perfect soundtrack to show the warmer sound of his talents, which are sometimes eclipsed by his weirder electronic modes! The soundtrack's from an erotic film starring sex-goddess Zeudi Araya, but despite the kinky origins of the material, the music's actually got a lot more sophistication than you'd expect – and the score feels more like a Morricone cerebral one than a cheesy sexy one – with dreamy wordless vocals floating around in the mix, and these sweet-stepping basslines that are especially wonderful – setting a slow funk current at great moments, in that Euro easy way of blending some hip bass with warmer strings and other instrumental touches. There's some haunting piano at points, too – and Umiliani has a great way of making the music sound emotive, but never sappy at all. Titles include "Pelle Di Luna", "Addio All'Isola Felice", "L'Ultima Spiaggia", "Seyga Seyga", "Nostalgia Dell'Isola", and "Tanto Tempo Fa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve Swell's Kende DreamsHommage A Bartok ... CD
Silkheart (Switzerland), 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tribute to Bela Bartok from the great trombonist Steve Swell – but a record that's very much in the spirit of all of the other fantastic records that Steve's been giving us! There's nothing too compositional here – the record is all original music, not versions of Bartok pieces – but the legendary avant classical figure would certainly appreciate the evocative tones and strong use of space from the group – a sublime quintet that also features Rob Brown on alto, Connie Crothers on piano, William Parker on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums! With a lineup like that, it's hard to miss – and these guys really knock it out of the park – on long, moody numbers that include "Roswellian Folk Song", "Lent Oh", "Ultima", "Attack Of The Mikrokosmos", "Bartok Screams", and "After SQ4". Plastic Strip Press (Norway), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 3CDs/DVD ... $34.99
An amazing tribute to the genius of pianist Svein Finnerud – a package that features 6 full albums of music, plus a bonus DVD of live, TV, and radio performances and interviews! The music starts in 1968 – with Svein's groundbreaking self-titled trio record – a masterpiece of understatement, one that takes the spare, lyrical style of the Bill Evans generation, and moves it into even more mellow, contemplative territory. The album's recorded with bassist Bjornar Andresen and drummer Espen Rud – who are frequent partners with Finnerud on other records in the collection – dates that include Plastic Sun (1972), Multimal (1971), Thoughts (1984), Travel Pillow (1994), and Egne Hoder (1999). DVD features performances from the late 60s, a TV show from 1970, and even some bonus slides and radio interviews too. CD

Fleur De LysCircles – The Ultimate Fleur De Lys ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... About April 30, 2021
A fantastic compilation of work from one of the grooviest groups on the UK scene of the late 60s – a mod combo with a surprisingly funky undercurrent at times – and a sound that's virtually the definition of the freakbeat groove! The drums here are wonderful – as heavy and massive as the fuzzy guitars – and although most of the tracks have a tuneful approach on the vocals, it's the bottom end that really drives the numbers strongly – a crossover between rock and soul that's a perfect summation of the mod aesthetic at its best! This overstuffed set features 25 tracks in all – every cut the band released as a single, plus some rare sides and demos – in a lineup that includes "Circles", "I Forgive You", "One City Girl", "Hammer Head", "Tick tock", "So Come On", "Stop Crossing The Bridge", "I've Been Trying", "Wait For Me", "Liar", "Moondreams", "I Walk The Sands", "Yeah I Do Love You", "Brick By Brick", and "Prodigal Son". Diana Ross & The SupremesFunny Girl (2CD ultimate edition) ... CD
Motown/Real Gone, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $26.99 27.99
A great little album from Diana Ross – maybe one of her lesser-known efforts with The Supremes, and a set that really points the way towards the solo years to come! One of the reasons for that is that the set really just features Diana out in the lead, with different backing singers behind – all the great songs from the show, but recast with these sophisticated soul arrangements by Gil Askey – very groovy, very Motown, but also with a lot stronger focus on Ross upfront than usual! In a way, the shift is a fantastic nod to Diana's growing role as a star – really claiming her as the black Streisand, a position that she's clearly confident with, and maybe even beats Barbara on the vocal tip too. Titles include "Funny Girl", "The Music That Makes Me Dance", "Don't Rain On My Parade", "People", "Cornet Man", "His Love Makes Me Beautiful", "Sadie Sadie", and "I'm The Greatest Star" – the last of which would make a nice theme song for Diana's 70s years! This expanded version not only marks the first time the record has been on CD – it also features both the stereo and the mono mixes of the record – plus the original recording of the album, with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong – the real Supremes recording of the set! There's also five more bonus tracks – "Cornet Man (alt)", "His Love Makes Me Beautiful (alt)", "Sadie Sadie (alt)", "I'm The Greatest Star (live TCB outtake)", and "My Man (live)". CD

Ultimate PaintingDusk ... CD
Trouble In Mind, 2016. Used ... $6.99
Hazy psych pop from Ultimate Painting! The group is officially a duo, and the less-is-more approach to moody songcraft really does make for a perfectly intimate vibe, centered on softly echoing guitars, airy vocals and some really nice of wuritzer. Mellow as it as, the overall sound is ultimately more narcotic than sleepy, and it's another engaging win for both the increasingly strong Ultimate Painting and for the ever-reliable Trouble In Mind label. Includes "Bills", "Song For Brian Jones", "A Portrait Of Jason", "Lead The Way", "Mondy Morning, Somewhere Central", "Who Is Your Next Target?", "Set Me Free", "Silhouetted Shimmering" and "Can't Run Anymore". UltimatesYou're My Lady ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... About June 23, 2021
Outtasite mellow soul from The Ultimates – an obscure east coast group with a really heavenly sound! The bulk of the album is from the group's only album – The Ultimates From The Beginning – recorded in 1969 with a warm and groovy harmony approach, of the sort that many other groups would begin working in during the 70s – but which comes across with a surprisingly professional style here! There's a great quality to the vocals on most tracks – smooth, but with just a few crackles – in a mode that humanizes the tunes nicely, and gives them a feel that reminds us a bit of The Delfonics or The Whatnauts. Titles include "She Went Away", "You're My Lady", "I Just Can't Stand It", "Girl I've Been Trying To Tell You", "Try A Little Love", and "Darling I Need You Now". LP, Vinyl record album

Four Flies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $38.99
A great entry in this very groovy series – one that shifts the title a bit from previous volumes, and which also moves the music a bit too – but all while staying pretty darn funky! The set's got much more of a 70s soundtrack vibe than some of the other entries – loads of great keyboards, heavy basslines, riffing guitar, and other elements that are often used in ways that remind us of the bigger blacksploitation and crime/cop work of the decade – but cooler, hipper, and a lot more obscure! Titles include "La Professoressa Di Scienze Naturali" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Addio Ultimo Uomo" by Franco Godi, "Uragno Sulle Bermuda" by Stelvio Cipriani, "L'Occhio Dietro La Parete" by Pippo Caruso, "A Pugni Nudi" by Franco Bixio/Fabio Frizzi/Vince Tempera, "Le Evase" by Pippo Caruso, "La Sbandata" by Domenico Modugno & Gianni Oddi, "Afrika Erotika" by Alessandro Blonksteiner, "Nove Ospiti Per Un Delitto" by Carlo Savina, and "Maladolescenza" by Pippo Caruso. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 30.99
John Morales has a wonderful talent for taking a funky track and making it sound even funkier – which he does beautifully here in this killer collection of old school tunes! Many of the numbers are vintage clubby soul from the late 70s and early 80s – and Morales has this great way of crystalizing all the best elements in the songs, and pulling them to the forefront – but all without ever ruining the integrity of the tracks that sounded so great in the first place! In other words, the work here isn't the imprint of some young DJ trying to overstate his presence – but a true music maestro who really knows what makes a club track great – a vibe that takes us back to the brilliant edits of the early NYC scene. All titles here are previously unreleased – and this 2LP set features four titles that include Morales mixes of "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Barry White, "You Got Me Running" by Lenny Williams, "Mind On You" by Level 42, and "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman. A long-overdue collection of smooth 80s soul from the lovely Perri – a female vocal quartet who cut a few albums for MCA years back, and who have reemerged in recent years as Anita Baker's backup group! On their own, though, the Perri sisters are a heck of a great outfit – one of the few really strong standout female soul groups to emerge in the 80s – with a sound that's certainly got some traces of the production standards of the time, but a sense of depth that takes them way past any 80s soul cliches! The CD brings together tracks from the Perri albums Celebrate, Tradewinds, and The Flight – and also features a bonus Lori Perri track from Do The Right Thing, and another number cut with The Yellowjackets. 12 titles in all – including "Someone Like You", "Fall In Love", "The Flight", "It's Been You", "He Never Sleeps", "I'm The One", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Revelation", and "Feel So Good". Starchild, 1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Aahhh yes! We never really could sit still in school, but if these were the kind of lessons the teachers were handing out, homework would have been a whole different story! The first volume of compilations in the excellent series documenting the history of cut'n'paste records. This original set sticks strictly to tracks titled as "Lesson"s, starting from the now classic "Lesson 1" by Double Dee & Steinski, a track that very nearly established a new genre, and a pivotal piece in the puzzle of hip hop history. Lessons 2 and 3 are also included here, and the set goes on to include the very hard to get "Lesson 4" from Cut Chemist, put together at the same time as Shadow's "Lesson 4", though the two sampler/turntable wizards were working unbeknownst to one another, holed up deep in their labs. Chemist ups the game here with his "Lesson 6: The Lecture", included in an unedited version, and there's three live tracks included: Lessons A, B and C, featuring Cut Chemist, Shortkut, DJ Shadow and Steinski! Motown (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An incredible compilation that finally fills in all the holes in Jimmy's years at Motown – offering up tracks from his 3 US albums for the label, plus material from 2 UK-only albums – and a full bonus disc of rare an unreleased material! The scope of the work is incredible – far more than we ever expected from Jimmy, given the rarity of his few US albums for Motown – hard enough to find as they are! Added to those 3 – Jimmy Ruffin Sings Top 10, Ruff N Ready, and The Groove Governor – the CD features material from British albums Jimmy Ruffin Forever and I've Passed This Way Before – making for 26 tracks on disc 1, and really filling in the full picture of Jimmy's work on LP. Then, on disc 2, the CD brings to light another 22 tracks – 10 of which are rare singles and non-LP tracks, the other 12 of which have never been issued before! The whole thing's amazing – an important rediscovery of work by one of Motown's greatest vocalists ever! 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got", "You Gave Me Love", "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound", "Kickin Stones", "Don't Take Away My Rose Colored Glasses", "Change Your Mind", "East Side West Side", "Shake Hands With A Dreamer", "Don't Feel Sorry For Me", "Baby I've Got It (stereo mix)", "He Who Picks A Rose", and "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted (alternate – with spoken intro)". A great collection of vintage Jackson 5 material from the Motown years – and one that also features solo work from Michael and Jermaine too! The tracks here capture the young group at their early best – full of fire, energy, and the kind of dynamic that made The Jacksons so different than some of the soul groups in the decade before – completely on fire on classics that include "I Want You Back", "ABC", "I'll Be There", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "It's Your Thing", "The Love You Save", "Mama's Pearl", "I Am Love", "The Life Of The Party", "Dancing Machine", "Lookin Through The Window", "Who's Loving You", "Maybe Tomorrow", and "Get It Together". Also features the Michael Jackson tracks "Just A Little Bit Of You", "Rockin Robbin", "Got To Be There", and "I Wanna Be Where You Are" – and Jermain Jackson singing "Daddy's Home" – plus the remix "It's Your Thing (J5 In 95 ext rmx)". BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
All titles here are previously unreleased – and the massive 4CD set features titles that include Morales mixes of "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Barry White, "You Got Me Running" by Lenny Williams, "Mind On You" by Level 42, "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman, "Lovergirl" by Teen Marie, "Standing Right Here" by Mannix, "Love Is The Message" by MFSB, "Let The Music Play" by Barry White, "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, "Funkin For Jamaica" by Tom Browne, "All Night" by Katzuma, "Hi Tension" by Hi Tension, "Girl You Need A Change Of Mind" by Eddie Kendricks, "Before I Let Go" by Frankie Beverly, "Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn, "Star Love" by Three Ounces Of Love", "You Stepped Into My Life" by Melba Moore, "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Walk Away From Love" by David Ruffin, "Life Goes On" by The Jones Girls, "This Time Baby" by Jackie Moore, "Turn Me Up" by Keith Barrow, "Circles" by Atlantic Starr, "Joy & Pain" by Maze, "Stay" by The Controllers, "Take Me Home" by Cher, and "Can't Live Without Your Love" by Tamiko Jones. Ubiquity, 2015. Used ... $6.99
Bosq returns with even more brilliantly soulful sounds than on the debut – it's one of the most diverse dancefloor ready set of grooves on the Ubiquity label in years! Bosq's love for classic percussion heavy jams from across the globe is on full display – from Afro Soul, to Latin, to Brazilian and stateside styles – but the sound is ultimately very fresh, particularly in the way he blends so many influences into a distinctive whole. Bosq himself plays piano, Rhodes, organ, synth, bass and percussion – and the impressive guest roster of vocalists and instrumentalists includes funky soul diva Nicole Willis, Kaleta, Jimmy Riley, Angeline Morrison and more! Titles include "Cumbia En Bahia", "Bounce And Pull Up" with Evan Laflamme, ""Ella" feat Jesus Pagan, "Bad For Me" with Nicole Willis, "Change" feat Jimmy Riley, Take Over", "Pap The Price" and "Liars & Thieves Dub" with Kaleta, "Laughs On Me" with Angeline Morrison and the hard grooving title track. Brand NubianOne For All (purple/green vinyl pressing – with bonus orange vinyl 7" single) ... LP
Elektra/Tommy Boy, 1990. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
One of those records that maybe snuck in a bit under the wire at the time of release – but a set that instantly went on to become a classic, and one of the greatest debuts of the early 90s! Not only is the production great – full of sophisticated samples and ways of putting them together that set a whole new standard for a generation – but Brand Nubian also found a way to take some of the energy of the Native Tongues' freshness, and turn it towards more serious themes – but all without the heavy-handedness that made some of their contemporaries date quickly. Hats off to Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar for such a great job right from the start – on titles that include "All For One", "Slow Down", "Drop The Bomb", "Concerto In X Minor", and 2 mixes of "Wake Up" (Stimulated Dummies mix and the penultimate reprise) – plus "Who Can Get Busy Like This Man", "Ragtime", "To The Right", "Dance To My Ministry", "Step To The Rear", "Try To Do Me", and "Dedication". A wild mix of electric and acoustic sounds from Henning Christiansen – done as a soundtrack for a film that's represented with images inside the cover – images that make the movie look as wild as the music on the record! Sounds come from a variety of sources – glass bowls, tubes, piano, baritone horn, synthesizer, and many voices – but all often abstracted by the production, and taken into territory where even the more familiar moments get completely changed up – with a disorienting vibe that's almost an 80s evolution of earlier electro-acoustic modes. ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireSpirit/That's The Way Of The World (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Columbia/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A pair of classics from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirit – a big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Of course, with Charles Stepney helping out on production, it's hard to miss – and he's one of the few cats who could handle a blend like this so well. The compression in the band's playing is impeccable – with just the right mix of spacey spiritualism, sophisticated jazzy playing, and a straight ahead love of the soulful hook. Includes the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! That's The Way Of The World may be Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD

EmotionsDon't Ask My Neighbors – The Columbia/Arc Recordings (Flowers/Rejoice/Sunbeam/Come Into Our World/New Affair/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99 30.99
Amazing box set – five full albums of material, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Flowers – a soaring classic from The Emotions – thanks to some supreme help from the Earth Wind & Fire side of the soul spectrum! This set has the trio really sounding great – with Kalimba Productions by Maurice White and Charles Stepney – and a good deal of EWF help on the instrumentation as well! The girls break out of the rootsier style used on their earlier Stax recordings, and manage to fit perfectly with the jazzy tinges of the new grooves – and, along with Ramsey Lewis and EWF, the Emotions were part of a hugely successful trinity during the late 70s – one that took the indie soul roots of the Chicago scene and turned it into landmark big business for Columbia Records. The album's got a new approach to female group soul that would go onto shape R&B for years to come – and titles include "Flowers", "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", "We Go Through Changes", "Special Part", and "You've Got The Right To Know". Next is Rejoice – a huge hit for both The Emotions and Maurice White – whose Kalimba Productions handled this album in the same hit mode they'd been using for Earth Wind & Fire! There's a polished, soaring bounce her that definitely shows the Earth Wind & Fire touch – and which takes the girls miles from their rougher, rootsier soul of the Stax/Volt years – yet like all the best EWF records of the time, the sound is also plenty soulful, with lots of righteous undercurrents. The album includes the group's wonderful track "Don't Ask My Neighbors", a heavenly tune that builds on a long tradition of sweet female soul from Chicago; the super-huge "Best Of My Love", a hit on dancefloors and radios for years to come – and many other nice numbers like "Blessed", "How'd I Know That Love Would Slip Away", and "Key To My Heart". Sunbeam is great little album from The Emotions – largely because it sounds a lot like prime mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire, with female vocals added over the top – ultimately, pulling away with a soulful charm all its own! Maurice White produced the whole set, and it's got a soaring spacey sound that provides a perfect spiritual edge to the girls vocals – taking them way past the hits, into much more sophisticated soul territory. There's a beautifully righteous vibe going on throughout – a sound that's almost like Minnie Riperton at her 70s Capitol best – and titles include "Love Vibes", "Walking The Line", "Time Is Passing By", "I Wouldn't Lie", "Smile", and "Spirit Of Summer". Come Into Our World has the sweet Emotions at the top of their game – one of the brilliant albums that has the soulful trio working hand in hand with Earth Wind & Fire! The girls were plenty great in their early years, but working with Maurice White and company, they really took off – hitting a whole new level that really unlocked some deeply spiritual power in their vocals! And sure, the approach also yielded the group plenty of hits – but for good reason, too – given the classic quality and all-great nature of a set like this. Maurice White produced, and the lineup is filled with plenty of Earth Wind & Fire players too – working with some great arrangements from Tom Tom 84, Wade Marcus, and others. Tunes are balanced between clubby numbers and some nice midtempo moments – and titles include "Where Is Your Love", "Cause I Love You", "Come Into My World", "On & On", "I Should Be Dancing", "Layed Back", and "Yes I Am". New Affair has The Emotions breaking free a bit from the Earth Wind & Fire influence, and grooving nicely with a sweet 80s feel! The girls' voices are still quite wonderful – some of the deepest harmonies in the female soul world at the time – and the tunes kick it up nicely in a blend of snapping bassy club tracks and mellower cuts that sweetly sway with their great vocals! Loads of wonderful tracks – and an album not to miss! Titles include "Turn It Out", "There'll Never Be Another Moment", "Now That I Know", "Love Lies", "When You Gonna Wake Up", and "Here You Come Again". 3CD set features 8 bonus tracks – including "Boogie Wonderland (12" mix", "Don't Ask My Neighbors (single version)", "I Should Be Dancin (single version)", "My Baby Dance", "Changes", "Where Is Your Love (single version)", and "Flowers (single version)". FugsBelle Of Avenue A ... CD
Reprise/Wounded Bird, 1969. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
One of the last couple of Fugs albums for Reprise – '69's Belle Of Avenue A – and a mix of stripped down acoustic weirdness and the more heated Fugs-style rock & roll of other Reprise albums by the group! In one level, it seems like they might have simply exorcised the experimental psychedelia demon with the more wildly arranged It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest album and decided to let this one succeed on the basis of the political satire and poetry of their wordplay. But it's not that simple, as they rage pretty heavily on a couple tunes and strip it down to the barest essentials on others. Ultimately, it's another sharp, worthy Fugs album everyone outta pick up! Inclludes "Bum's Song", "Dust Devil", "Chicago", "For Minutes To Twelve", "Queen Of The Nile", "Yodeling Yippie", "Children Of The Dream" and more. CD

Gap BandGap Band IV/Gap Band V Jammin ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A pair of early 80s classics from the Gap Band – back to back in a single set! First up is Gap Banc IV – perhaps the ultimate album for The Gap Band – and sure, it was a hit, but the record still sounds great today, and the constant sampling of some of the record has kept it fresh in the crates for years and years! The band have lost the heavier funk sound of earlier years, and working in a slick 80s groove mode that they both helped to define and put on the charts with the tracks "Outstanding" and "Early In The Morning", both two killer grooves with a complicated instrumental feel, and some wicked harmony vocals over the top. Lonnie Simmons is still producing the band – and other tracks include "Lonely Like Me", "Stay With Me", "Talkin Back", and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me". On the second album, the Gap Band are definitely Jammin – hitting that fierce funk mode they do so well, with lots of snapping lines at the bottom of the rhythms! The style is trademark Gap all the way through – a percolated approach to funk that's tight, but never too slick – in a groove that's different than some of their other mainstream counterparts at the time – hard to describe accurately, but almost with a touch of jazz in the mix! Charlie Wilson handles most of the lead vocals, with support from brothers Robert and Ronnie – and Ronnie produced most of the set. Titles include "Where Are We Going", "Shake A Leg", "Jam The Motha", "Someday", "You're Something Special", "I'm Ready", "You're My Everything", "Smile", and "Jammin In America". CD also features the bonus track "Party Train (special dance mix)". CD

Kool Moe Dee's second album – a benchmark moment in mid-to-late 80s solo rap – and definitely worth a post millennium revisit! The title cut is a prime relic of the Kool Moe Dee vs. LL Cool J battles back in the day, and that along with "Wild Wild West" are bonafide classic cuts – but the a lot of the lesser remembered tracks here are ultimately just as nice. Even though it's only his second album, Moe was a block rockin' veteren by this point, with an MC pedigree stretching back to Treacherous Three, and is probably his sharpest point. Other tracks include "Suckers", "Way Way Back", "No Respect", "Don't Dance", "I'm A Player" and "Get Paid". LP, Vinyl record album

Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". The "biggest" album of Lou Reed's career – in the grand sense – with epic production and a small army of superstar session players and production by spectacle specialist Bob Ezrin – but that's paired with arguably the darkest, gloomiest songcycle ever composed by Lou Reed! The dichotomy works, and Lou apparently agrees, having revisited the material in the mid aughties to great acclaim. Ultimately, this and the previous year's Transformer makes for one of the strangest and most incredible transitions over a short period of time in pop music history. Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. ✨✧ Johnnie TaylorRated X-Traordinaire – Best Of Johnnie Taylor ... CD
Legacy/Columbia, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 7.98
Killer work from Johnnie Taylor – from the amazing period in which he reinvented himself as one of the bigger selling smooth soul acts of the 70s! Johnnie got his start as a solo act at Stax, churning out some great raw bluesy tunes that earned him more than a few hit records – but when Stax was going belly-up in the mid 70s, Johnnie made the move to Columbia, and it was one of the best he ever made! The ultimate sign of this success was the super-huge hit "Disco Lady" – a perpetual favorite on AM radio that forever earned Johnnie a place in the soul hall of fame. But way past that number (included here, by the way) – which could have led Johnnie into a cash heavy (but ultimately short) career of dancefloor records – Johnnie instead also worked on his rich talent for ballads and mellow numbers, emerging as a sophisticated singer at a level no one would have guessed from his early days. You'll hear that best on tracks like "Love Is Better In The AM " or "Your Love Is Rated X" – but you'll also get plenty of nice moments from tunes like "You're The Best In The World", "Play Something Pretty", "Right Now", and "Stop Giving People Hard Luck Stories". 16 tracks in all. The group's a lot better than you'll remember – if all you can remember is "Disco Inferno" – and in a way, they were the ultimate realization of that east coast "harmony group gone uptempo" sound that pushed out of the underground to the mainstream during the mid 70s. This set's got a total of 18 cuts, nearly all of which are produced to Philly perfection by the team of Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young. Titles include "Love Epidemic", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "Where Do We Go From Here", "Hooked For Life", "Trammps Disco Theme", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Seasons For Girls", "Disco Party", "That's Where The Happy People Go", "Soul Searchin Time", and of course, "Disco Inferno". A cool compilation that collects the first couple years of recordings for Chicago's Rembrandt Records – some great and largely unheard garage psyche from The Nuchez, The Nite-Owls (also known as The Nickel Bag), The Circus, The Lemon Drops and others! Some of these cats were still in their teens, making walloping yet tuneful numbers inspired by LSD and other illicit activities, which gives the some songs a seedy charm, but the ultimately it's simply great raw, yet solidly produced rock that's as groovy as Nuggets tracks and better known numbers of the era. Includes "Open Up Your Mind" and "BG's One Eye" by The Nuchez, "Sands Of Mind" and "Games We Play" by The Circus, "It's A Hassle" by The Nite-Owls, "The Woods" by The Nickel Bag, "Sometime Ago" by The Lemon Drops and more. 22 tracks in all, including previously unreleased stereo and mono versions, and all of it is actually quite rare! Capitol, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great American-only album from the Rubber Soul generation – the last one made specifically for the US market because of the different release patterns in the US and UK – with a number of their greatest songs of the period! Features a bunch of classics, and it ultimately holds together better creatively than some of their other US-only LP – but it also encapsulates a fascinating period in Beatles history, summing up end months of their middle period, very soon to segue into more psychedelic territory. Includes "Nowhere Man", "Drive My Car", "Dr Robert", "Act Naturally", "Day Tripper", "And Your Bird Can Sing", and "If I Needed Someone". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence Carter's first few years of Fame Studios singles – simply put, some of very best southern soul of this or any other period – both sides of each single Clarence cut with Rick Hall at Fame from 1966-1973! What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, and all those playings, the record manages to still sound fantastic – a truly inspirational piece of music that's long deserved all the attention it gets! The legendary group on the album includes John Coltrane on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass – working with Miles in a relatively modal style, with brilliant rhythm changes and a wonderful sense of space. The whole thing's sublime – and titles include "Blue In Green", "All Blues", "So What", and "Freddie Freeloader". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eric DolphyOut To Lunch ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics – and possibly the ultimate album of "new thing" jazz from the mid 60s! The record's got an even sharper edge than previous Dolphy recordings for Prestige – a really unique combination of instrumentation that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – plus Dolphy on alto sax, flute, and bass clarinet. Although Dolphy's reed playing is as amazing as you'd expect, the real surprise here is Hutcherson, whose vibes ring out with this cold harsh tone that give a perfect edge to the set – bold and metallic, quite different than any work on vibes from previous players. Despite a large number of later recordings, Hutcherson almost never hit this sound again – except perhaps on a few Jackie McLean recordings – and it's his playing that gives the set such a unique sound. Titles include "Straight Up & Down", "Gazzelloni", "Hat & Bread", "Out To Lunch" and "Something Sweet Something Tender". CD

CBS, 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Shining Star (future star)", "All About Love (first impressions)", "Happy Feelin (anatomy of a groove)", "Caribou Chaser (jazzy jam)", and "That's The Way Of The World (Latin expedition)". Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic final album from Sharon Jones – a wonderfully deep talent who was taken from us all too soon! The set's maybe the ultimate setting for Sharon's incredible voice – as it features both her longtime core combo, the Dap-Kings – as well as additional backings from the Bushwick Philharmonic – a small ensemble of strings who really help elevate the music to classic status! If you're worried that the strings might soften the sound, the very first note of the record will put your mind at rest – as will the heavy drums that mark just about every track, and keep things hard and funky throughout. If anyone ever doubted that the Daptone label was our modern equivalent of Stax Records or Atlantic, this will certainly be the set to change their mind – and will also stand forever as a bittersweet reminder of all the greatness that Sharon Jones gave us over the years. Titles include "Searching For A New Day", "Rumors", "Matter Of Time", "Sail On", "Just Give Me Your Time", "Come & Be A Winner", "Call On God", and "These Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

Sounds Of Memphis/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful female soul from The Minits – a three piece group that recorded just a few singles for the the Sounds Of Memphis label – with a dozen great songs pulled together for this excellent compilation from Kent UK, many of which were never issued before now! Ultimately, there were far too few female soul stars coming out of Memphis with popularity anywhere near the levels of the male stars, and fewer still on labels other than Stax or Hi – and the dozen tracks here make a very strong case for The Minits, who should have busted out hugely. The set is light on ballads and skews towards dancefloor ready rhythms and pop soul of the best kind, with genuine soul! It includes their great Sounds Of Memphis singles and several tracks that were left in the vaults and only recently discovered. Titles include "Lover Boy", "Still A Part Of Me", "Last Mile Of The Way", "Pullin'", "Natural Reaction", "If You Don't Like My Apples (Don't Shake The Tree)", "Follow Your Heart" and more. CD

Numero, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sample funk spun from records rescued by The Numero Group – edited by white label production crew Shoes without Numero's consent – which was then seized by Numero at the pressing plant, they bootlegged the bootleg, and release it here legitimately as Eccentric Breaks & Beats! The breakbeat funk aware will recognize the packaging for its parody of the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series – and however you feel about the politics of grey market music – creatively, this thing is a total win! Numero takes such impeccable care with their reissues, from the masters to the notes and packaging, we actually never really thought of the music as sample material – funky as the funkiest of their ouvre is! That's a testament to the curators of Numero, as the singers, players and producers of the original material are of paramount importance and we think of them individually when we listen to those compilations. Shoes, on the other hand (. . .or foot), heard potential for hypnotic, swirling psych funk blends and spins an undeniably creative set to suit. A great blend of old and new Brazilian grooves – kind of the ultimate expression of this great series! Like the first 2 volumes, this 5th one features some great lost older tracks; and like the 3rd and 4th volumes, it's also got some new tunes that are really wonderful. There's a lot of percussion in the grooves throughout – sweet keyboards and tight riffing mixes with rootsy drums, soulful vocals, and other great touches – soaring forward towards a jazzy global future that knows no boundaries! CD features a total of 14 tracks that include "Torn (Blissom rmx)" by Rise Ashen, "Comanche" by Jorge Ben, "Moonlight" by Nu Tropic, "Casa Forte" by REQ, "Lua" by Wagon Cookin, "Agua De Beber" by Aquarius Y Luiz Antonio, "La La Li" by Rachael Calladine, "Fica Mal Com Deus" by Rosalia De Souza, "Scott Air (traveling light mix)" by Ben Human, "Outra Vida (Eddy & Dus rmx)" by Les Gammas, "Bohemian (Bah Samba main mix)" by Muro, "Icarai" by Os Ipanemas, "Eh Luande (Mimosa avantgarde mix)" by Racoon, and "Gypsy Woman" by Montefiori Cocktail. Rare pop psych from the late 60s & early 70s French scene – groovy singles from Le Coeur, Les Hamsters, Les Chimeriennes, Dan Le Bouffon, Christopher Laird, Yar & Yana and others – really cool stuff, most of which we've never heard before! Lion's Groove Club series goes on to focus on Cambodian grooves for Vols 2 & 3, but the belated Vol 1 belongs to the Parisian pop psych scene. Chiming little guitar tunes with sweet harmony vocals, even more harmony drenched tunes inspired by west coast US acts like The Mamas & Papas, medieval folk pop styled tunes, mod & funk groovers and more – lots of period influences from the US and Europe, but ultimately it's profoundly, and charmingly French sounding! More funky breaks than Evel Knevel after the Snake River Canyon jump! The groove hounds at BGP records were set loose on the Ace catalog – which includes holdings from Atlantic, Stax, Volt, Westbound, and other funky classic labels – and they managed to come up with a killer batch of funky cuts, even though this is their 3rd dip into the crates! Elektra/Tommy Boy, 1990. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Massive work by Lee Dorsey – recorded years after his classics in the 60s, and even funkier overall! Lee's really cooking on all burners here – working with the production team of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, and getting some incredible backing from The Meters – who are at the height of their powers during this period! In a way, the set's one of the ultimate New Orleans sessions of the 70s – a culmination of all the best elements that were percolating together in the 60s indie underground, simmered together perfectly in a tighter 70s Polygram funk mode! Includes the massive original version of "Yes We Can Can" – way better than any of the subsequent cover versions – plus great takes on"Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further", "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", "Gator Tail", "Tears Tears & More Tears", "When The Bill's Paid", and "Occapella". ✨✧ LaRombeFrom Philly ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LaRombe Baker hails from Philly, but he's best known for his late 70s work on the LA scene – a place where he was continually bubbling under, but never fully got the chance he deserved! Hearing this set, it's clear that LaRombe was one of the great almost-rans of his generation – an artist with the chops to record great soul material without the supervision of any major label or big producer – yet one without the savvy to get such music into the hands of a force that would give it the place it deserved! According to the notes, Baker came to close to working with Motown, Solar, and Curtom – but maybe the fact that those labels passed on tracks as great as these is what makes them so special – a beautifully balanced album of boogie numbers and mellow soul tracks – well-written, beautifully arranged, and topped with great vocals from the man himself. The set's one to put next to your gems from Leon Ware and Ronnie McNeir from back in the day – and titles include "It's All In Your Mind", "Sweet Sensation", "Spread My Wings", "In The Light", "U R The 1", "The Ultimate", and an alternate take of his one issued single "You're The Best". The great John Lennon album from 1973 – still in an exhilaratingly creative mode with strong Plastic Ono traces, even if the overall effect is more mainstream friendly – ultimately, an album that stands incredibly well on its own, even if its something of a bridge to John's rock and roll years to come! The songs aren't as overtly strident as the ones on Sometime In New York City, but there's plenty of passion bubbling under the surface – and the struggle to be as honest and passionate as he can be without bludgeoning us over the head with his feelings brings an underlying tension the work as whole that's pretty amazing to this day. Wire kept it short and sweet on Pink Flag – with 21 tracks in about 35 minutes – and it's as artful as it is succinct. Excellent 12" tracks from the Streetwise/Partytime label – the kind of unusual dubs, instrumentals, and remixes the company always put on its extended singles – usually numbers that are sparkling with just the right sort of electro touches that made these records real favorites for both the breakers in the streets and the mixers in the club! Streetwise had a number of big hits back in the day, but most of these numbers are non-vocal versions of those songs – and really show the great ear for beats that helped make the label one of the key forces for bringing the sound of hip hop back into soul music. Titles include "Reprise Me" by Paul Simpson Connection, "Don't Take Your Love Away (inst)" by Pushe, "Music Is The Answer (dub)" by Colonel Abrams, "Jet Set (inst)" by Dr John, "Slack (funkhouse mix)" by Slack, "Living For The Weekend (rough mix)" by Rockers Revenge, "Funky Soul Makossa (free beats)" by Nairobi & The Awesome Foursome, "I Don't Need Your Handouts (inst)" by Citispeak with Jeanne Harris, and "See The Light/Feel The Heat (dub)" by Air Force 1. Raw funky soul from Diamond Street Players – heavy on vintage inspired, timelessly spun instrumentals, but nailing down some standout vocal jams with Orgone vocalist Adryon de Leon and Atlanta soul singer Amanda Joy – and ultimately delivering a solid gem for the Gemco label! One of the best ECM teams of the 70s – working here together in a wonderful live set! Chick Corea's got this wonderful flow on his piano – almost a quality that's more like the most unbridled Keith Jarrett work for ECM – bursting out with light and color at each new turn, but in a way that makes it feel like Chick's just discovering each sound as it comes to his fingertips! This quality really seems to bring out a freshness in Burton's vibes, too – an ebullience that's even stronger than usual – and not as concerned with deeper-down sounds as some of his other ECM recordings. The whole thing's great – with lots of original tunes by Chick – and titles include "Song To Gayle", "Mirror Mirror", "Crystal Silence", "Bud Powell", and "Senor Mouse". CD

✨✧ Claudia Solal & Benoit DelbecqHopetown ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really evocative songs from French vocalist Claudia Solal – delivered here with some creative sounds on piano from Benoit Delbecq, at a level that illuminates the words and vocal phrasing quite differently than conventional accompaniment! Solal's songs alone are amazing – written and sung with an experimental style that evokes the best 70s avant work of singers like Sheila Jordan, Karin Krog, or Annette Peacock – vivid and personal, with structures that are very different than conventional jazz vocal material – then illustrated by work from Delbecq that's equally balanced between the keys of the piano and the strings inside the instrument, which occasionally seem to have some sort of Cage-esque "preparations" added to the mix. Titles include "In The Small Of My Back", "Winter Garden", "Inner Otherness", "Euphoria", "No Sake Tonight", "Ultimate Embrace", and "Burning Green". CD

✨✧ VariousStrictly MAW – 2CD Mix Compilation From Masters At Work ... CD
Strictly Rhythm, 1990s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A loving look back at the glory days of the Strictly Rhythm label – presented in two separate mixes by Masters At Work, whose early productions were a key part of the Strictly Rhythm sound! Back at a time when most club tracks were often a little too cold, Strictly Rhythm brought a nice degree of soul back onto the dancefloor – styles that often borrowed a bit from classic club of years back, and also helped set the stage for the wonderful depth of the New York scene in the 21st Century! Although Masters At Work never issued singles under that name for the label, both Kenny Dope and Louie Vega worked together and solo on Strictly Rhythm projects – many of which are presented here in mixes alongside other Strictly Rhythm work. CD 1 features 14 tracks mixed by Louie – including "No Cure" by Hardrive, "Carnival 93 (Mardi Gras mix)" by Club Ultimate, "Curious (voc mix)" by Sun Sun Sun, "Get Up (orig mix)" by Krimp, "Zulu (change mix)" by Circle Children, "Jazz It Up (ext jazz)" by Erick Morillo Project, and "Love & Happiness (MAW rmx)" by River Ocean with India. CD 2 features 14 tracks mixed by Kenny, including "I Get Lifted (Bar dub)" by Barbara Tucker, "Blues For You (hard dub)" by Logic, "We Can Make It (Underground Network mix)" by Sole Fusion, "Dancin (a little more dub)" by Erick Moe Morillo, "Freedom (Color 3 Lil Louis Zohz sub dub)" by Black Magic, and "Deep Interlude" by Kenny Dope.
