✨✧ Pete Rugolo And His OrchestraRugolo Plays Kenton ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great album that has arranger Pete Rugolo working with some of the bigger tunes from the Stan Kenton band – all in a tribute to the time when Pete was Stan's number one arranger, and a key force behind the success of the group! The groove is a mixture of west coast cool and sharper modern touches – played by a very Kentonish batch of players – including Bob Cooper and Dave Pell on tenor sax, Bud Shake and Harry Klee on flute and alto, Milt Bernhart and Frank Rosolino on trombones, Buddy Childers and Don Fagerquist on trumpets, Howard Roberts on guitar, Red Callender on tuba, Claude Williamson on piano, and Shelly Manne on drums. The tunes are nearly all Kenton originals – save for a few co-composed by Rugolo and Kenton – and titles include "Capitol Punishment", "Eager Beaver", "Painted Rhythm", "Concerto For Doghouse", "Minor Riff", and "Opus In Pastels". Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Hugo LippiReflections In B ... LP
Universal/Virgin (France), 2024. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
The debut album by a guitarist who might well go into the realm of the classics – as he plays here with a sense of care and balance of tone that's very much his own – handling a hollow-body electric with a sound that's simply stunning from the very first note! Hugo Lippi isn't one of those "too clean" guitarists from the vintage years – as he loves to get some richer sounds out of the guitar, while also never rasping the strings or pushing distortion at all either – always playing with a sense of clarity that's great, while also touching on the complexity of acoustic players with an effortless touch! Lippi handles his instrument with the skills of Baden Powell or Paco DeLucia – although he sounds nothing like either of them – while also using the electric side of the instrument to effortlessly create amazing colors throughout. Titles include "A Child Is Born", "Reflections In B", "Land Of Hope & Glory", "Girl", "La Ballade De Johnny Jane", "Be Yourself", "Choros No 1/Bossa Antigua", and a surprising medley of "Wuthering Heights/Babooshka". ✨✧ Nathen PageNathen Page Plays Pretty For The People ... LP
Hugo's Music, 1978. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Relatively straightforward guitar jazz grooving from Nathen Page – a player who's probably better known for his countless studio appearances on the west coast scene, but who also managed to cut a few albums like this as a leader! The style is relatively laidback and relaxed – with Nathen playing hollow body guitar in a soul jazz mode that's similar to some of Ray Crawford's work from the time. His lines get a bit complicated at times, but never too much so – and rhythm is by the team of Charles Covington on piano, Steve Novosel on bass, and Mike Smith on drums. Title sinclude "Invitation", "Once I Loved", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", and "Lush Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pete RugoloBehind Brigitte Bardot ... LP
Warner, 1960. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool record! The album's sort of an American tribute to the emerging French sex goddess Brigitte Bardot – one that features a gatefold cover with a wraparound photo of Brigitte, and some nice images on the inside. Music on the set is by Pete Rugolo – the master arranger who'd worked with June Christy, Stan Kenton, and others – and although Bardot doesn't sing or even make an appearance on the set, Pete does more than enough of a good job of conjuring up her presence with a good selection of jazzy tunes. Players include Pete Candoli and Jack Sheldon on trumpets, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Paul Horn and Bud Shank on reeds, and Laurindo Almeida on guitar. Gloria Wood sings on one track – and titles include "Arsenic Blues", "Paris BB", "Jeff's Blues", "Mambo Bardot", "A T'Aimer", and "The Night Heaven Fell". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MugoUnited ... CD
Kay Dee, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early 70s ensemble funk from Mugo – a DC group made up of students from McKinley Tech High School – combining tightly energetic, fairly sprawling instrumentation and soulful vocals – a number of unreleased tracks from the sessions that also produced their rare 70s single, newly mixed by Kenny Dope for the Kay Dee label! The school band vibe really kind of comes into play via the uncommon mix of instruments, and that works really, really well – B-3, Rhodes and Korg synthesizer provide for some spacier touches, while flute and piano also find room in the group's sound alongside the funky drums, guitar and bass – with feverish vocals and some killer instrumental passages. The performances are inventively strong, too – it doesn't sound like a bunch a kids, that's for sure! We we flipped over the single Kay Dee put out of the group, and we're all the more ecstatic over the great LP! Includes "Change", "Organized (Kenny Dope Edit)", "Space Traveler", "I Love Music", "How Time Fly's", "All About Love", "Love Has Gone", "Sing A Song" and "Water". CD

RCA, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A weird and wonderful record – the early hits of Neil Diamond, played on the moog and ARP by the mighty Hugo Montenegro! The approach to the set is pretty darn cool – as it takes 10 of Neil's best early tunes, and runs them through arrangements by Montenegro that run from funky to groovy to dreamy – and which feature some very strange use of electronics! Sparkling and weird all the way through – with versions of "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon", "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show", "Sweet Caroline", "Two-Bit Man Child", "Porcupine Pie", and more! ✨✧ Pete Rugolo10 Trumpets & 2 Guitars ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An extremely groovy session from arranger Pete Rugolo – done in a style that's partly jazz, but which also has lots of dynamic range – in a way that's almost in the style of some of the RCA bachelor pad albums from the time. Rugolo makes the most of the interesting format – using the horns for blasting, brassy waves of sound upfront – then letting the guitars step around in cool little ways – sometimes hitting the percussive tones you'd hear on an Esquivel album, and at others going for a straighter jazz approach. Players include Pete Candolo, Don Fagerquist, Howard Roberts, Larry Bunker, and Al Viola – and titles include "Two Guitars", "Ten Trumpets Have I", "Trumpets At Large", "Guitarsville", "Whispering", and "Echoes Of Harlem". A percussion-heavy batch of tracks that has Pete Rugolo starting from a mode explored heavily in the hi-fi years, but taking the genre into much jazzier territory! With the help of a large group of west coast players – including Don Fagerquist, Larry Bunker, Herbie Harper, Frank Rosolini, Jack Costanzo, and Shelly Manne – Pete really makes things swing nicely, and brings in as much dynamic energy from the horns as he gets from the percussion! Tex AllenLate Night ... CD
Muse, 1991. Used ... $1.99
A beautifully sensitive set from Tex Allen – mostly a trumpeter, but also a singer here on two numbers – working with a laidback approach that's totally great! Tex blows with a bit of Miles Davis space in his trumpet – early Miles, not late – and his singing has a warm, mellow feel that's a bit like Grady Tate, although a bit more understated too, with a slight rasp that gives him a nice sense of personality – and makes him a really great change from the obvious. This approach sounds especially great on the tune "The Process Necessary" – almost a samba-esque jazz dancer, but with a gentle groove – and Allen also sings on the longer tunes "When You Find A Love" and "The Things We'll Never Know". All other titles are instrumental, with players who include Jesse Davis on alto, Jackie Terrasson on piano, Ugonna Okagu on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. Lawrence Killian plays percussion on half the album – and other titles include "Estate", "Mutti's Bletten", "Wings Of Ceola", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". CD

An excellent bit of lost Brazilian fusion Hugo and Jorge Fattoruso, produced by Airto Moriera! Opa recorded Goldenwings in the Fantasy studios with that sweet west coast vibe that the best albums of the label had at the time. Spacey keyboards and drums drive the sound brilliantly here, with bits of funk and sweet fusiony soundscapes. Hermeto Pascoal plays flute on a couple of numbers and Airto guest on a number of tracks, too! Carol SloaneOut Of The Blue ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Very Good- ... $9.99
A beautiful little record from singer Carol Sloane – a singer who's billed as a discovery from the Newport Jazz Festival – but who sings here with shimmeringly modern arrangements that recall some of June Christy's best 50s work with arranger Pete Rugolo! The force behind the backings here is mostly Bill Finegan – of Sauter-Finegan fame – who uses just the right amount of subtle modern colors and tones to instantly announce Sloane as a singer from a new generation – one who's not trying to cross over to pop, nor please the dancers – and instead revel in all the advances that jazz vocals had made in the postwar years. Bob Brookmeyer also arranged a few tunes – and plays often on the record, with a great tone that underscores the blue vibe of the set – and titles include "Who Cares", "My Ship", "Little Girl Blue", "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries", "Night & Day", "My Silent Love", and "The More I See You". Nathan Page was one of the more obscure players of the east coast soul jazz underground that surfaced often on labels like Strata East and Muse during the 70s – and although he made few albums as a leader, he's a pretty strong single-note guitar player with a good range of styles! This 1982 album has him playing with Buster Williams, Billy Hart, and Kenny Barron – and the sound's a mix of straight soul jazz tunes, plus others that have a slicker, more-produced sound. Includes a version of Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge", plus the originals "Sunday Morning Samba", "Reba", and "Gypsy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George HandyPensive (aka By George) ... CD
Vik/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from composer/arranger George Handy – a brilliant set of inventive tunes that easily place him on a level with better-known 50s arrangers like Ralph Burns, Gil Evans, and George Russell! There's as much modernism here as in the work of any the three above – but also a style that's a bit more swinging, and sometimes playful too – not as filled with tricks as Pete Rugolo, but still very open to a broad flourish from a key soloist. The instrumentation's quite unique too – mixing bits of oboe and violin with saxes and trumpets at odd moments – creating an interplay that's almost other-worldly in sound, but which still swings nicely throughout! Players include Dick Sherman and Gene Orloff on trumpets, Frank Rehack on trombone, Dave Schildkraut on alto, Tommy Mace on tenor, and Tony Aless on piano – and titles include "Heavy Hands", "Pulse", "Tender Touch", "Pensive", "Maretet", "The Flatterer", and "Knobby Knees". Man, we've always loved trumpeter Tom Harrell – but over the last few years, we've grown to love him even more – thanks to the ever-advancing quality of records like this! Tom's always been one hell of a trumpeter, but he also seems to have grown into a richly visionary leader too – coming up with this amazing sound for his group, filled with even richer tones and more vivid colors than ever before! It's hard to really put our finger on it, but one listen to this album, and you'll know what we're talking about – a quality that makes you sit up and take notice, then go rifling through your collection to revisit all the Harrell sides from decades before. Of course, the strength of the group has a lot to do with the sound here – a wonderful lineup that features Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Danny Grissett on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Jonathan Blake on drums – on titles that include "Storm Approaching", "Let The Children Play", "Roman Nights", "Agua", "Study In Sound", "Bird In Flight", and "Year Of The Ox". This album was the 7th in the Contemporary series of "Shelly Manne & His Men", but it's also easily the best, and features some of the most exciting playing of any of Manne's groups. The success of the whole album comes down to Charlie Mariano, who wrote a large number of the tracks, and who's at the height of his powers on alto here – hitting a beautiful mix of icy modernism and Boston soul, in the tradition of some of his best Bethlehem recordings. Side one features an extended work called "The Gambit", which has a nice blend of far-reaching soloing and tight jazzy rhythm. Other titles include "Blue Gnu", "Hugo Hurwhey", and "Tom Brown's Buddy" – and players include Stu Williamson and Russ Freeman. LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol/Creative World, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A killer album from Johnny Richards – possibly the best he ever cut! The album sparkles with all the intensity he brought to Stan Kenton's Cuban Fire album – with bits of Latin, jazz, and some of the modernist scoring that Kenton, Richards, and Pete Rugolo were using at the time. However, the main thing about this album is that it swings like a mo-fo – moving past any tricks and gags to hit a strong jazz mode, with excelelnt solo work by players like Frank Socolow, Gene Quill, and trumpeter Burt Collins. Willie Rodriguez brings some nice Latin percussion to the set – and titles include "Cimarron", "Eyes", "Nipigon", and "The Ballad Of Tappan Zee". LP, Vinyl record album

French pianist Jack Dieval is working here with a group that includes American Art Taylor on drums, plus tenor by Francois Jenneau and Eduard Sadil, French horn by Bernard Vitet, and trumpet by Predrag Ivanovic. The feel is pretty easy-going overall, a relaxed jam session in the studio between some very like-minded players – and the album almost feels like some of the titles in the Jazz In Paris series. ✨✧ Oscar RocchiAlchemy In Jazz ... LP
Minstrel/Holy Basil (Italy), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from Italian pianist Oscar Rocchi – a set that still holds onto some of the modern elements of his music, but which also shows a warmly lyrical side as well! That latter quality really comes through strongly in the flute lines of Hugo Heredia – which grace about half the record, and have this flowing brilliance that really stands out – a quality that's nicely balanced with some harder trumpet lines from Sergio Fanni, who plays here with the same depth of soul as Heredia! Hugo also blows a bit of tenor on the album, too – creating a crackling energy when he does – but it's also clear that Rocchi's the real star of the show, with his bold command of the piano, his strong vision as a leader, and his great writing on all the album's original tracks. Other group members include Furio DiCastri on bass and Gianni Cazzola on drums – and titles include "Sulphur", "Rubedo", "Nigredo", "Gold Fast", "Solution", and "Mercury". LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Haunting guitar work from Branko Mataja – a player with roots in Belgrade, but who recorded these tracks while living in California during his later years – all in a mode that's filled with longing for his homeland! The material is pulled from two different albums – one recorded in the 70s, one in the 80s – both of which focus on older traditional songs from Yugoslavia, but handled by Branko in an otherworldly style that often uses electric guitar and echo to really break with any sense of tradition! The tunes are lovely – often mixing very deft work on the strings with the nicely atmospheric mood created by the production – all at a level that's unlike anything you might have expected to hear coming from the SoCal scene in the 70s. An incredible meeting of two massive Chicago talents – with results that are even more amazing than you might think! We've always loved the music of flute player Nicole Mitchell – and have reveled in watching her get even more righteous and sophisticated in her projects in recent years – and we've always had deep respect for the words and wisdom of Haki Madhubuti, a writer who makes us incredibly proud to live in the Windy City. Yet together, these two genius talents resonate with even more strength than we might ever have imagined – as Nicole turns in some of her deepest music in years, to set up the right kind of setting for Haki's words – all served up in a mixture of jazz and spoken passages that almost blows away most classics of this nature from the 70s! The group is wonderful – with Mitchell on flute, alongside Pharez Whitted on trumpet, Tomeka Reid on cello, Harrison Bankhead on drums, Renee Baker and Zara Zaharieva on violins, Tomas Fujiwara on drums, and Jovia Armstrong – and singer Ugochi provides additional vocal support for Madhubuti's spoken lead – as the group also soars out on some strong instrumental passages too. The scope of Mitchell's writing is even broader than before – and titles include "Rise Vision", "Move Into Our Own", "Gwendolyn Brooks", "Often Hard To Believe", "Woman Black", "We Walk The Way Of The New World", "Peace Starts Inside You", "Blackman Unfinished", and "Too Many Of Our Young". One of the most ambitious albums ever recorded from Clifford Jordan – a totally righteous little effort that was the first installment in the legendary Dolphy Series on the Strata East label! The titles are originals by Jordan – long numbers that flow out slowly as they build up new musical ideas – all in a style that's somewhat laidback and spacious, very organic, and a bit like some of the best early 70s Impulse material by Archie Shepp. Album features 4 long tracks – "872", "Vienna", "Doug's Prelude", and "Ouagoudougou". Capitol, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius, pure genius! If you've ever wondered why folks think Stan is so great, check out this landmark set of postwar modern swing tunes – some of the most groundbreaking work of its generation, and proof that there was still a lot of room to grow within the big band format. June Christy provides some icy vocals on a few numbers, and other strong players on the set include Vido Musso, Boots Mussulli, Kai Winding, Eddie Safranski, and Shelly Manne. Arrangements are by Pete Rugolo, Gene Roland, and Stan – and titles include "Safranski (Artistry In Bass)", "Artistry In Percussion", "Fantasy", "Come Back To Sorrento", "Ain't No Misery In Me", "Opus In Pastels", "Willow Weep For Me" and "Artistry In Bolero". ✨✧ Terumasa HinoBluestruck ... CD
Blue Note, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
A key record in the career of trumpeter Terumasa Hino – an album cut with mostly American players, as part of a rebirth of Hino's music into the world of traditional jazz! Terumasa cut some great fusion records in the 80s, but this set's got a completely different approach – a group that soars with energy and life, led by the trumpeter on cornet – and with excellent work from Bobby Watson on alto, Rob Scheps on tenor, Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano, and John Scofield on guitar! The rhythm really romps the record into plays – Bob Hurst on bass and Victor Lewis on drums – and Don Sickler helped Hino do some of the arrangements for the group, with that strong sense of color that always made his own work of the period so wonderful. Titles include "Sweet Love Of Mine", "Bluestruck", "Hugo", "Alone Alone & Alone"- "Time Outing", "Rain Again", and "Romancero Gitano". CD

✨✧ Clifford JordanIn The World (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Strata East/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums ever recorded from Clifford Jordan – a totally righteous little effort that was the first installment in the legendary Dolphy Series on the Strata East label! The set has Jordan working with a larger group than usual – an all-star array of players that includes Kenny Dorham and Don Cherry on trumpets, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Wilbur Ware and Richard Davis on bass, and drums from Roy Haynes, Ed Blackwell, and Albert Heath. ✨✧ Nathan DavisBest Of Nathan Davis – 1965 to 1976 ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Essential work from Nathan Davis – one of our favorite jazz musicians ever! Davis is one of those cats who you'll never find mentioned in the mainstream, but his music has had a profound influence on our groove for many years – an essential soul jazz style that is finally given full due by this wonderful compilation! Nathan's got a very long resume in jazz – but one that's mostly occurred in the underground – time in both the KC and Pittsburgh scenes here in the US, and key years overseas, working in Paris, Germany, and even Eastern Europe – touching both musicians and jazz fans alike in his travels, and continuing to develop a really unique, truly amazing sound. Davis plays both tenor and soprano sax on these recordings – blowing with a style that owes just a bit to Coltrane, but which really takes off strongly on its own groove too – often with modal rhythms in support of his tones, which makes for some really spiritual, exotic moments in his music. The package brings together a wealth of rare recordings by Davis, many of which are not currently available in any form – cuts from albums for MPS, European Polydor, and other overseas labels – and some rare indie cuts from the US too. Titles include a version of "A5" recorded live in Yugoslavia; the rare "Cecen Kizi", recorded in Turkey – and the tracks "B's Blues", "Theme From Zoltan", "Mandingo", "Up Jumped Spring", "Uschimaus", "Atlanta Walk", "Makatuka", "New Orleans", "Tragic Magic", "Sconsolato", and a studio version of "A5". ✨✧ Tom HarrellNumber Five ... CD
High Note, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bold quintet set from trumpeter Tom Harrell – one that's a bit more back to basics than some of his other recent outings – with an especially strong focus on horn solos spiraling out over the rhythms! Harrell's got a nice bit in his trumpet, and plays some moodier flugelhorn too – sounding great on the mellow numbers – and Wayne Escoffery adds his tenor to the lead too. Danny Grissett is mostly on piano, but plays some Fender Rhodes at points – and rhythms from Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums often have occasional bop inflections. Titles include "Present", "Right As Rain", "Journey To The Stars", "Preludim", "A Blue Time", "The Question", and "Melody In B Flat". CD
