Black Seeds/Sound TrekUnited States Army Special Services Agency Europe Presents The Winners Of The Second Annual Original Magnificent Special Services ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1972. Used Gatefold ... $3.99
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. New Copy 3CD ... $12.99 24.98
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". Guido & Maurizio De AngelisLo Chiamavano Bulldozer (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Beat (Italy), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
A very groovy little soundtrack from the team of Guido and Maurizio De Angelis – one that was penned to accompany an offbeat Bud Spencer film of the late 70s, and which offers up plenty of variations on the catchy theme! Bud plays Bulldozer – an ex-US football player, holed up in Italy – where he cobbles together a team of locals to take down the team of the US Army stationed nearby – a goofy plot, but one that's made that much better by the work of the De Angelis brothers! The core theme is initially sung by Oliver Onions, in English – then taken through a range of great instrumental readings that echo some of the styles used by Guido and Maurizio on their straighter crime and action scores, but with lots of sweet twists and turns along the way. ✨✧ Rosemary ClooneyRosemary Clooney In Songs From The Paramount Pictures Production Of White Christmas (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Real Gone, 1954. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rosemary Clooney has had many claims to fame over the years, but one of her first was a key appearance in the film White Christmas – an on-screen role that's nicely reprised here in a set of Irving Berlin tunes from the movie! Rosemary sings solo on all numbers – save for one that's done as a duet with her sister – and the backings nicely approximate the overall vibe of the soundtrack, but have a tighter sort of clarity for these studio recordings. Tracks include "White Christmas", "Snow", "Get I Wish I Was Back In The Army", and "Count Your Blessings Instead Of Sheep". Plus, the CD adds in 7 more bonus tracks – radio performances from The Rosemary Clooney Show or The Bing Crosby Show – with titles that include "Home For The Holidays", "The Christmas Song", "Jingle Bells", "Silver Bells", and "Happy Christmas Little Friend". ✨✧ ExDisturbing Domestic Peace (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
Ex/Superior Viaduct, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The Ex have had an amazing career over their many decades in music – forays into jazz, improv, and even global sounds – but here, right at the start, they're much more in the spirit of political punk contemporaries from the UK – especially Gang Of Four and Crass – both of whom are a good comparison to the nonstop energy and razor-sharp sound of this debut album! Lyrics are all in English, and these guys are clearly using their unique spot in the Dutch scene to soar out and challenge some of the more powerful acts of the Anglo world – coming on strong with scratchy guitar, hard-rolling basslines, and drums that drive the lead lyrics over the top – on titles that include "A Sense Of Tumour", "Sucking Pig", "Outlook Army", "The Sky Is Blue Again", "Map", "Rules", "Squatsong", and "Warning Shot". ✨✧ VariousTreasure Isle Ska Rarities (3CD set) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Trojan (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge collection of rare singles from the vaults of the legendary Treasure Isle label – a company who was home to some of the hippest tracks from the early days of ska – and also did a great job of getting the music to the UK scene as well! This package goes past the familiar Treasure Isle hits, as the 7" singles feature previously unreleased tracks and rare alternate versions – all packaged up in a great box set with a mighty sharp look. The whole thing is great – nice and raw, and very different than ska revival material of later years – and this 3CD set features all the material that was on the 7" box set done a few years back, plus 74 more bonus tracks! Core cuts include "You Wish Me Bad (take 6)" by The Spanishtonians, "Love Me Or Leave Me (take 1)" by Owen & Leon Silvera, "I'm All Alone (take 1)" by Frank Cosmo, "Oh Misery (take 2)" by The Duke Reid Group, "Thinking Of The Future" by Stranger Cole, "Fooling Around" by The Rio Grandes, "Renegade (take 1)" by The Zodiacs, "Smokey Ska (take 1)" by The Baba Brooks Band, "Practice What You Preach" by Owen & Leon Silvera, "My True Confession (take 1)" by The Silvertones, "Til My Dying Day" by Winston & Slim, "Road To Nowhere (orig mix)" by Lyn Taitt & The Baba Brooks Band, "What A Bailing (take 1)" by Duke Reid Group, The Army Is Searching (take 2)" by Basil Caral & Group, "Storm Warning (take 1)" by Lyn Taitt & the Boys, "Want Me Cock (take 1)" by Owen & Leon Silvera, and "How Know Your Friend (take 1)" by Derrick Morgan – with bonus material by Duke Reid, The Movers, Justin Hinds, Tommy McCook, Froggy, Lynn Tait, Eric Morris, Baba Brooks, Lloyd & Glenn, Derrick & Naomi, The Miracles, The Zodiacs, The Melodies, Sensations, and many many more. Gary McFarland & Peter SmithButterscotch Rum ... LP
Buddah, Late 60s. Sealed Gatefold ... $14.99
Very cool stuff – and a very strange record for Gary McFarland! The album features tracks that are a lot more vocal-oriented than his earlier work – but the same great sense of wild arrangements and strange subtle genius is still firmly in place. McFarland, as much as any idiosyncratic song craftsman of the era , had an expert way of layering intricate instrumentation in a way that was always loose and in service of the vocals. This record is a fine example that talent, and a lovingly groovy and strange batch of tunes, too! Vocals are handled mostly by Peter Smith, but McFarland also joins in on a number of tracks. True genius pop – on a par with the best 60s Nilsson albums, or some particularly great moments from Spanky & Our Gang. Titles include "Poor Daniel", "Dance With Me", "Straight Arrow", "Salvation Army Rags", "Rain On The Ocean" and "All My Better Days". LP, Vinyl record album

Lloyd McNeilTreasures ... CD
Baobab/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A gem of a record from flute player Lloyd McNeil – an artist who flourished strongly during the spiritual jazz scene of the 70s, but who also seemed to always have his own sort of groove as well! Lloyd blows with the complexity and far-reaching sounds of contemporaries in the loft jazz scene, but he also opens up with more of a modal groove on most of these tracks too – a great pulse from a hip rhythm section that features Dom Salvador on piano, Cecil McBee on drums, Brian Brake on drums – and both Portinho and Ray Armando on percussion – players who add sensitive, subtle elements to the music to really resonate with the flute! Lloyd's sound is wonderful throughout – sometimes with the soulful focus of Roland Kirk, sometimes more open and cosmic, ala Prince Lasha – all depending on the special rhythms of the tunes. Titles include "Griot", "Salvation Army", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "As A Matter Of Fact". CD

An incredible set of Brazilian jazz – one of the few albums that percussionist Dom Um Romao recorded as a leader, and sublime all the way through! The record's got a wonderful blend of funky fusion and Brazilian percussion – and features a group from two continents that includes Sivuca on organ, Dom Salvador on electric piano, Joe Beck on guitar, Jerry Dodgion on alto sax, Lloyd McNeill on flute, and Mauricio Smith on tenor, soprano, and flute. Includes the percussion jammer "Shake (Ginga Gingou)", the modal groover "Wait on the Corner", and the lively scatting tune "The Angels" – but the whole album's great, and other tracks include "The Salvation Army", "Kitchen", and "Lamento Negro". ✨✧ El WaliTiris ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 1994. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from a West Saharan group dedicated to political independence of the Sahrawi people, but who also work with a great blend of older acoustic styles and a few contemporary electric elements! The music has maybe a touch of Tuareg guitar in the mix, but there's also some powerful vocals, earthy percussion, and some lighter electric touches from time to time – the last of which are never overdone or over-polished, so that the voices and percussion shine through in a beautiful way! Things get a bit funky at points, but the music is maybe best when it's more evocative, and has a heartfelt political power – on titles that include "The Day Of The Free Nation", "Sing For The Nation Day", "Long Love The Sahrawi Army", "20 Of May", "Let Me Know Our Past", "I Sing For The Country", "Song For The Prophet", and "Brave People". An obscure jazzy group from the New Zealand scene of the early 70s – definitely a rock act at the core, but one who make wonderful use of flute and tenor from Andrew Stevens, who really helps give the record a special sound of its own! There's also some vibes, Indian percussion, and other unique instrumentation in the set – mixed with guitars that are as acoustic as they are electric, giving the whole thing a quality that's almost in the folk funk side of the universe – dreamy one minute, groovy the next, and the kind of record that's well worth seeking out as a unique rarity! Titles include "Da Woiks", "I Sit Alone", "Which Way Confusion", "Through My Window", "Learning Bout Living", and "Those Days Are Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fela & Egypt 80Army Arrangement ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The original take of "Army Arrangement" – one of the greatest 80s grooves from Fela Kuti – stretched out here over the course of the entire album! The notes list side one as being the "instrumental" and side two as the "vocal" – but in truth, the whole thing moves across the space of the album together – with the band building up into tremendous energy as they get started, then Fela coming in for some very powerful lyrics that take the Nigerian government to task for its very corrupt practices. And of course, the music is fantastic – sharp, funky, and filled with this intensity that never lets up! LP, Vinyl record album

Happy DollsShow Album No 1 ... CD
Beatball (Korea), 1978. Used ... $9.99
A very cool quintet of Korean lovelies from the 70s – five gals who could sing sweetly when they wanted, but also hit some funkier sounds on their instruments as well! The Happy Dolls follow strongly in the tradition of earlier Army base acts from the postwar Korean scene – but they've also got a groovier sound overall, and maybe more of an international appeal too – given the time they spent on the Vegas stages in the early part of the decade, and their frequent work in Canada during the latter half. This set was recorded in Toronto, and it's got a very unusual approach that mixes equal parts small combo funk with some fuller harmony singing as well – a shift that takes place from track to track on the set, which makes for a surprising sense of variety. The group turn in two great covers – "Funky Stuff" and "Pick Up The Pieces" – both of which work great in kind of an indie funk mode – and other tunes include their own "Bombie", a take on "Shake Your Booty", and even a "Drum Solo" number! ✨✧ Lou ReedBerlin ... CD
RCA, 1973. Used ... $2.99
The "biggest" album of Lou Reed's career – in the grand sense – with epic production and a small army of superstar session players and production by spectacle specialist Bob Ezrin – but that's paired with arguably the darkest, gloomiest songcycle ever composed by Lou Reed! The dichotomy works, and Lou apparently agrees, having revisited the material in the mid aughties to great acclaim. Ultimately, this and the previous year's Transformer makes for one of the strangest and most incredible transitions over a short period of time in pop music history. Titles include "Berlin", "Lady Day", "Men Of Good Fortune", "Caroline Says" (I & II), "The Kids", "The Bed", "Sad Song" and more. CD

A soaring blend of Brazilian modes – served up here by Ricardo Richaid, who's almost a one-man army himself, given the amount of instruments he plays on the set! Yet the record is also way more than just a batch of tunes cooked up in a bedroom – as Richaid has collaborators on nearly every track – which expands his own work on piano, bass, and a variety of guitars – really helping to situation his raspy and compelling vocals amidst some jazzier touches on flute and tenor, guest vocals, percussion, and other elements along the way! The tunes are often really catchy and compelling, even if your command of Portuguese is as bad as ours – and it's clear that Ricardo really knows his way around a hook, in sort of a universal way – while still making music that's completely his own. Titles include "Drone", "Vip Xuxa", "Maracas Enterprise/Frio Da Manha", "Ave Poena", "O Velho Cai", and "Formigas". CD
