Roy AyersLifeline ... LP
Polydor, 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $10.99 21.99
One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". ✨✧ Roy AyersMystic Voyage ... LP
Polydor, 1975. Very Good ... $14.99
An archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point of his sound! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first up-tempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". LP, Vinyl record album

Roy AyersSilver Vibrations ... CD
Uno Melodic/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 18.99
A fantastic lost chapter in the career of genius soul/jazz/funk maestro Roy Ayers – a set that was only ever issued in the UK, and which is a great second part to his Lots Of Love album on the Uno Melodic label! This album features a few tracks from that gem, but in longer versions – mixed with other cuts that were never issued in the US at the time – all with that return to perfection that Roy found on Uno Melodic – which was his own label, and one of the few times in the 80s when he matched the brilliance of his 70s recordings on Polydor! Like those albums, the style here is tight and right in the pocket, but also full of meaning and message too – beautiful songs that are catchy, but far from commercial – funky, but never dance music in a conventional way. The set kicks off with a 7:20 minute version of "Chicago" – one of our favorite Roy Ayers songs ever, natch – and other cuts include "Smiling With Our Eyes", "Good Good Music", "Keep On Movin", "Silver Vibrations", "DC City", and "Lots Of Love". BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
It's like a dream come true – 13 previously unissued recordings by Roy Ayers, all from the height of his glory years on Polydor! Roy's work from this time is some of our favorite ever – a burning blend of jazz, soul, and funk – handled with impeccable charm, and a level of soul that few other artists of the time ever matched. Roy's genius was strongly documented at the time by a series of excellent Polydor albums – but there was also a heck of a lot of great material that never saw the light of day, and which is every bit as great as the classics that we've come to know and love over the years. Hearing this set is incredible – like upping our already-massive appreciation of Roy's talents, and like finding a lost corner of soul music history that nobody's ever heard before. The tunes are all amazing – a great blend of jazzy soul, mellow soul, and dancefloor groovers – and the package is only the tip of the iceberg, from what we've been told! The full album does a great job to not cross over too much with the 12" singles previously issued in this "Virgin" series – and titles include "What's The T", "I Really Love You", "Sugar", "Mystery Of Love", "Green & Gold", "Brand New Feeling", "I Did It In Seattle", "I Just Wanna Give It Up", "Together Forever", "Boogie Down", "I Am Your Mind", and a great alternate version of "Mystic Voyage"! The genius of Roy Ayers knows no end – and as this set of unreleased work from the 70s proves, Roy was always working at top form back in the day – even above and beyond his classic albums from the time! The grooves here are tremendous – funky, soulful, jazzy, and every bit as wonderful as the work that Roy did for his classic albums on Polydor – and in a way, the whole set's even tighter and heavier than any of Roy's full LPs, because it's a distillation of his sound from the time, hand-picked from the vaults with an ear towards the kind of timeless grooves that have been a huge influence on many worlds of music for years! You've never heard any of these tunes before, but we can promise you'll love them every bit as much as Roy's tracks on albums like Coffy, Vibrations, Mystic Voyage, and other classics – and the quality of the set only further pushes our jaw-dropping respect for the man! Titles include "Holiday", "Kwajilori", "I Am Your Mind (part 2)", "Touch Of Class", "Third Time", "Come To Me", "Wide Open", "Funk In The Hole", "Liquid Love", "Tarzan", "Sunshine (demo)", and "I Like The Way You Do It To Me". Rare Roy Ayers, remixed – and an amazing collection that links Roy's older work to a wide variety of current styles! The massively overstuffed package features tracks unearthed in the recent Virgin Ubiquity project – BBE's dip back into Roy's studio vaults from the 70s, a virtual treasure trove of unissued gems that match his classic work for Polydor! Those tracks are presented here in all new versions – remixed by Kenny Dope, Osunlade, Basement Jaxx, Platinum Pied Pipers, Joey Negro, and many others who've inherited soul and inspiration from Roy over the years. All remixes are extremely respectful of the originals – appreciating them strongly, and pulling out key elements to work around newer grooves – in a way that's certain to win Roy's approval! Titles include "Holiday" remixed by Kenny Dope, "Funk In The Hole" remixed by Nicolay, "Third Time" remixed by Vikter Duplaix, "Sugar" remixed by Joey Negro, "I Am Your Mind (part 2)" remixed by Mr V, "Mystic Voyage (version)" remixed by DJ Marky & XRS, "Funk In The Hole" remixed by Platinum Pied Pipers, and "Tarzan" remixed by Osunlade – 10 tracks total. Two gems from the legendary pairing of these two great 70s jazz funk giants! "Step In To Our Life" is the title cut from one of the albums that Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson cut together – and the tune has all the edgy vibes of Roy's great Polydor records, mixed with some of the slightly tighter funk of Henderson's At Home Productions – with plenty of space for both artists to solo! "For Real" is a tune with a bassline and some great Roy Ayers-styled vocals sliding along the groove – but still plenty of jazzy touches from both of the leaders! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Roy BuchananProphet – The Unreleased First Polydor Album (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. Used 2CDs ... $29.99
A fantastic early solo project from guitarist Roy Buchanan – recorded for Polydor at the start of the 70s, but never issued at the time! We're not sure why the label slept on the set, as it's a searing little killer right from the start – done in a gritty mode that's far hipper than some of the other blues rock of the period – never that cliched, with some swampy elements, a few funky touches, and a strong hint of the farther-reaching modes that Buchanan would hit in later years. Roy sings, as does a young Charlie Daniels, who plays second guitar and also wrote many of the tracks – and the set also features some vocals from Joe DiGregorio, and keyboards from Bob Wilson. Titles include "Humbug Down On The River", "Billy Joe Young", "The Story Of Isaac", "Black Autumn", "Funky Junky", "There'll Always Be", "I Desire You", and "Pain". 2CD set also features a March 1971 session, and bonus tracks too – with titles that include "Roy's Bluz", "Shotgun", "Dual Soliloquy", "CC Rider (live)", "Down By The River (live)", "After Hours/The Messiah Will Come Again", and "Sweet Dreams". Heist films always provided some of the best soundtracks of the 70's, and this one (starring Robert Shaw and Richard Roundtree, and issued in the US as Diamond Shaft) is no exception! Roy Budd rises to the groovy occasion and scores some excellent moments that match a light orchestral sound with a throbbing electric bass and percussion underground – in a style that's like Lalo Schifrin's best work from the time. The CD's overflowing with tracks, including a few bonus mixes, and there's even 2 vocal numbers that feature The Three Degrees. Titles include "The Thief", "Beauty & The Bass", "Diamonds", "Party Piece", "Thief On the Prowl", and more! Nice notes, and some nicely funky crime themes, too! CD

Roy BuddGet Carter (3CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1971. New Copy 3 CDs ... $32.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Brit soundtrack genius Roy Budd – an artist who started with his roots in jazz piano, but who really explodes here in a range of groovy styles! The main title is an incredible blend of Eastern percussion and moody jazz – and other cuts bring in some trippier elements, mixed with funkier bits and warmer moments – all at a level that have Budd even outdoing the best late 60s work by Lalo Schifrin! The keyboards are often at the forefront – either acoustic or electric – and the album's got so many groovy grooves, with such variety, it's got a feel that's much richer than the usual soundtrack set. Titles include "Love Is A Four Letter Word", "Carter Takes A Train", "Looking For Someone", "The Girl In The Car", "Livin Should Be This Way", "Manhunt", "Goodbye Carter", and "Hallucinations". This fantastic 3CD set is overflowing with greatness! First, the whole thing comes in a heavy book-style cover – with dozens of pages of notes, photos, and images from the film – and CD2 features 18 more rare mixes of songs from the film – a great addition to the 22 tracks on CD1 – making for a whopping 40 tracks in all. CD3 features 19 more Roy Budd grooves, mostly from soundtracks – songs that include "Mr Funker", "Diamond Fortress", "No Cooperation", "Cassette Jazz", "How Can We Run Away", "Fear Is The Key", "Who Needs Love Anyway", "Versailles Exit", and "Jazz It Up". ✨✧ Roy C HammondSex & Soul ... CD
Mercury/Playback, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Sex, soul, and lots more too – a sublime solo set from the great Roy C Hammond – recorded after his initial work with The Honeydrippers! The approach here is much more deep soul than his work with that group – very much in the best sort of Fame or Hi Records vibe – with a slow-burning sound that's a nice evolution past the earliest modes of southern soul, and which is perfectly suited to the sophistication of Roy's vocals! The set was the first in Hammond's solo run for Mercury Records – almost ignored at the time, but later the stuff of legend – thanks to writers like Peter Guaralnick, and others who've finally given Roy his due. The arrangements and instrumentation are wonderful – much more indie soul than you'd expect – on a par with the best early 70s material on Stax/Volt – and titles include "I Found A Man In My Bed", "Back Into My Arms", "Open Letter To The President", "Don't Blame The Man" and "I'll Never Leave You Lonely". Roy HarperReturn Of The Sophisticated Beggar ... CD
Mooncrest (UK), 1966. Used ... $14.99
A brilliant early record from Roy Harper – some of the first material he ever set to tape, and sounds that are maybe a bit more rough-edged than some of his later albums – but still equally great! Harper was always something completely different than most of his contemporaries – a singer who worked with acoustic guitar, but not really a folk artist – and part of the long haired generation, but never really a conventional rocker either. Instead, he hits this deeply personal space that balances his sharp tongue with his amazing work on guitar – all with a darkness that makes the music much moodier than even early material by John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, or other contemporaries. Songs are shorter than later on, but pack plenty into the space – and titles include "Sophisticated Beggar", "China Girl", "Girlie", "October The Twelfth", "Committed", "Hup Hup Spiral", "Black Clouds", and "Mr Station Master". Great drums from the legendary Roy Haynes – a player who was really coming into his own again at the time of this mid 90s set! The recording's a live one, done for Danish Broadcasting with a good sense of clarity – and the group is mostly European, with Tomas Franck on tenor, Thomas Clausen on piano, and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass. Haynes' touch on the kit is quite heavy at some points, but light and sensitive at others– and the set's got a well-rounded groove that's great proof of Roy's vision as a leader during this time, especially in the way he uses Franck's strong tenor lines. Titles include "All Blues", "My Shining Hour", "Bessie's Blues", "A La Blues", "Bright", and "I Fall In Love Too Easily". CD

Roy Haynes QuartetOut Of The Afternoon ... CD
Impulse, 1962. Used ... $9.99
Drummer Roy Haynes always brings something great to the table for any album he does as a leader – and this record is no exception! Here, the "added something" is the presence of Roland Kirk on reeds – offered a key early chance to express his most modern ideas in the freedom of Haynes' group – working alongside Tommy Flanagan on piano and Henry Grimes on bass, in what was easily one of the hippest groups to record for Impulse in the early 60s! The record's filled with wonderful material – and a mix of originals and standards done with a very twisted edge – all with great interplay between Kirk's quirky sax work and Roy Haynes' amazing drumming – often changing up timings and rhythms with ease, and really matching Kirk's quirky energy for the set. Titles include "Moon Ray", "Raoul", "Snap Crackle", and "Long Wharf". CD

The group's completed by bassist Larry Ridley, also a key force in the sound – and the set includes the track "Dorian", a massive modal groover, plus the killer "Scoochie" – and the cuts "Under Paris Skies", "Honeydew", "Bad News Blues", and "Sketch Of Melba". ABC, 1957. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of the grooviest records ever by the wonderful vocal team of Jackie & Roy – a sweetly swinging 50s session, with great LA jazz backings from the orchestra of Bill Holman! There's a breezy vibe to the whole thing that's years ahead of its time – not pop harmony vocals, but an approach that's strongly rooted in jazz, but also loosened up from the strict vocalese of the bop singers too. The cover's got Jackie & Roy playing on a slide at the sea – and that free and easy image certainly sums up the feel of the music – a lightly playful blend of jazz vocalese, ballads, and strong duet numbers, all sung with the usual Jackie & Roy charm. The set includes some great tunes, too – including "Pent Up House", "Free & Easy", "So It's Spring", and "Aren't You Glad You're You". LP, Vinyl record album

The album features Roy playing piano in a quartet with Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – and there's a lightly jazzy feel to the whole set, one that really works well with the vocals from the pair. Jackie takes the lead on some numbers, but most have her and Roy singing duets – in that cool mix of scatting and lyrical interplay they do so well. The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". Sing Baby Sing is sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". Jackie & Roy are definitely getting bit wilder here – hitting an electric early 70s CTI mode, and really growing a lot in the process! The session has the vocal pair working with CD players who include Hubert Laws on flute, Joe Farrell on saxes, Roy Pennington on vibes, and Steve Gadd on drums – all working with arrangements from Roy that are every bit as hip as the Don Sebesky treatments they previously got on CTI. The tracks are all longish, with plenty of room for complex vocals and great interaction with the instruments – and the titles are all originals, sounding really great and creative! A smoking funky set from early 70s Stax Records – the only album we've ever seen from Roy Lee Johnson & The Villagers, and a stone cooker all the way through! The sound is hard and heavy on most numbers – with loads of funky 45-styled riffs – and the core group is a nicely self-contained unit, with a lot of focus on the rhythm section – but they also get some great help here from the Memphis Horns, who blow over the top beautifully, and add a nicely soulful vibe to the record! Drums are nice and hard – and titles include the killer "The Dryer (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Razorback Circus", "Robot", "Midnight At Riley's", "Don't Tell Me Nothing About My Woman", "Patch It Up", and "I'll Be Your Doctor Man". Richly creative work from Nu Band – a hip ensemble that features Roy Campbell on trumpets and flute, Mark Whitecage on alto and clarinet, Joe Fonda on bass, and Lou Grassi on drums and percussion! There's a flowing, open feel here that's very much like some of Campbell's best albums recorded under his own name – a strong continuation of the 70s loft jazz spirit – sometimes handled with a loose, open, improvisatory quality – but one that still hangs together with a really coherent sense of soul. Other numbers have a rhythmic intensity that really fits the title – and the live setting makes for some great extended performances, too. A seminal moment for the Nashville scene – a time when the city was able to turn its country production talents to the world of pop – and provide the perfect setting for the amazing vocals of Roy Orbison! Roy had recorded previously for Sun, but despite the great track record of that label, it was his handling by Monument on records like this that really set his star on the rise – using Orbison's deep, dark twang amidst some light strings and echoey production that's never schmaltzy at all – just this fantastic echo of all the blue moods at the core of the tunes! Titles include Roy's originals "Only The Lonely", "Blue Avenue", "Come Back To Me", "Blue Angel", "I'm Hurtin", and "I'll Say It's My Fault" – plus versions of "Bye Bye Love", "Cry", and "I Can't Stop Loving You". The last album ever recorded by funky drummer Roy Porter – and a really unique set that seeks to combine his older grooves from the 70s with contemporary elements from the 90s hip hop scene! The approach is a lot better than you might expect, and has lots of the best true school elements firmly in place – no surprise, given that most of the tracks are built from Porter's complicated rhythms and sophisticated electric grooves, pulled almost straight from his original albums – with rhymes added by Houston Blue, Ded To The World, and Big Born. Plus, the set's also got some instrumental numbers that hold very strongly in the old Roy Porter mode – killer cuts "Slaughterhouse", "Wave", "Dopetifvity", and "Mr RP & Me" – next to vocal cuts that include "Generation", "Slaughterhouse", and "Mysticali Fix". A really fantastic collection of work from the legendary LA drummer Roy Porter – initially a figure in that city's bebop scene, but an artist who continued to work on the fringes over the years – including some great soul and funk work in the 60s and 70s! This set's from the mid 80s, but collects gems from Roy's best years – lots of self-released material that has his drums sounding raw and funky, with plenty of breaks in the mix, and a monstrous batch of funky instrumentation over the top! The set also includes a great version of "Lonesome Mood", a moody track with vocals by Rex Middleton's Hi-Fi's that was later recorded by Friends of Distinction, but which sounds even better in this original – plus the track "In A Groove", a straighter jazz number, and funky gems "Panama", "Hip City", "Drums For Daryl", "Party Time", and both vocal and instrumental versions of "Jessica". CD also features some related bonus tracks too – "Panama" and "Where There's A Will There's A Way" by George Holmes & Roy Porter Sound Machine, "The Road Ahead" and "I Need You So" by soul singer Jay T, and the cuts "Lonesome Mood", "Summer Night", and "Drums For Daryl (parts 1 & 2)", all pulled from 7" singles. An album with Roy Ayers in the title – but which also features the man himself in the music – really sounding wonderful here, and recreating some of the best sounds of his classic work from the 70s! For some reason, Adrian Younge always likes to put his name in the lead, even when working with classic artists – like The Delfonics – but as with his record with that group, this project never has Younge eclipsing the real star of the set too much – as the record is very much Roy's own, and is full of the kind of sublimely soulful sounds that have always made Ayers one of our favorite artists of all time! Roy plays vibes, sings, and delivers the kind of well-tuned soul tracks that we always love so much – alongside bass, Fender Rhodes, and other instruments from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – plus work from Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Wendell Harrison on tenor. Mercury/Playback, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Definitely something nice from the great Roy C – one of the overlooked soul singer's great 70s albums for Mercury – all of which are ripe for rediscovery by a younger generation! This one's slightly different than the rest, in that the album was recorded at the Dynamic Studios in Kingston – where Roy mixes his deep soul vocals with some slight Jamaican touches – not an outright reggae move, but just a bit of an island kick to some of the rhythms, mostly in the drums – which give some of these tunes a really sweet-stepping groove. The approach is maybe a bit like Johnny Nash, but much hipper – given the quality level of Roy C from his early years in The Honeydrippers onto these solo sides. Horace Ott arranged most of the album – and titles include "Second Time Around", "Virgin Girl", "If I Could Love You Forever", "Loneliness Has Got a Hold On Me", "Fireside", and "My Girl". When we think of Roy Haynes, we tend to think of his crackling drum work as one of bop's finest drummers and Elvin Jones' occasional replacement in Trane's classic quartet. But this late 70s fusion session cooks nicely with sidemen like Stanley Cowell, Cecil McBee, Kenneth Jackson and Joe Henderson. The groove is smooth 70s electric jazz, with just enough funky edge to make you nod your head, and crisp playing that doesn't let you forget where most of these guys are coming from. "Wonderin" has a geat pulsating modal groove, and "Water Children" has a nice open, spacious feel – kind of post-CTI. Also includes the title track, "Invitation" and "Venus Eyes". A monster! This is a stellar session that has Booker Ervin's tenor fronting a tight group led by drummer Roy Haynes – all with an amazing sense of rhythm that's made the album a standout for years! Ervin is playing in his best modernist vein, and the rhythm section features the excellent pianist Ronnie Matthews – who's playing here in a very funky modal style that makes for some really wonderful grooves. Haynes is the real star, though, as his lively, lyrical drumming breaks from any tight time constraints – and adds an extra-musical edge to the whole session with some quick changes and an undercurrent of lyrical energy. A classic bit of southern funky rock from Roy Head – an artist who's in the same territory here as Tony Joe White on his early albums for Monument! Like Tony on those gems, Roy's got a heavy dose of soul in his music – produced to perfection by Huey P Meaux, who was handling plenty of work from the deeper side of the southern spectrum at the time, and who makes Head sound fantastic here with a vibe that's kind of in a Texas-meets-Muscle Shoals sort of style! There's a great core group – heavy on organ, riffing guitar, and a tight team of trumpet and tenor – and the heavy drums on the set make it super nice and funky! Sampled by Tribe Called Quest, Lord Finesse, and others – and with the cuts "Soul Train", "Neighbor Neighbor", "Don't Want To Make It Too Funky", "Trying To Reach My Goal", "Same People", "Mama Mama", "Driving Wheel", and the break-heavy "Double Your Satisfaction". Vistone/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crazy bit of funk from drummer Roy Porter – a player who first rose to fame during the LA bop years of the late 40s, but who sounds even hipper here in the 70s! The album's got a madly skittish approach to funk – one that's highly rhythmic, but often in unconventional ways – somewhat similar to Redd Holt's excellent albums for the Paula label. Roy plays drums, percussion, and sings a bit – and the grooves run from break-heavy instrumentals to even cooler numbers that bring in more of a sense of flow and soul – really opening things up beyond any simple 70s jazz funk cliches, and hitting some really wicked new territory! Instrumentation includes plenty of great horns, electric piano, guitar, and even a bit of Arp – all used in really inventive and creative ways. Titles include the classic crate-digging favorites "Panama" and "Party Time", plus a vocal version of "Jessica", a cover of Jobim's "Waver-ing", and another nice original called "Funny Feelin'"! Tremendous stuff all the way through! CD

Vistone/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful mix of soul jazz, funky rhythms, and even more experimental moments – a truly tremendous effort from LA drummer Roy Porter, and the first set issued under the name of his Sound Machine group! The groove here is really unconventional – filled with unusual timings, phrasings, and changes that push it way beyond more familiar jazz funk of Prestige, Fantasy, or CTI – yet still all very much in the pocket, with a righteously soulful vibe that's incredible! The cover's inspired by Roy's son's love of motocross – and one number even features a bit of motorcycle sound effects along with the grooves! The rest of the tracks are heavier on the horns, and feature some wonderful arrangements that are filled with soul and style – always a bit edgey, and never too slick or straightforward. Titles include the classics "Funky Twitch" and "Hip City", plus "Drums for Daryl", "Ooh-La-La", and the legendary "Jessica", a really beautiful number! CD

✨✧ Roy AyersEverybody Loves The Sunshine (40th anniversary yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polydor, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Very righteous, and with a cool dope jazzy groove! LP, Vinyl record album

That's an angry-looking James Coburn on the cover – a tipoff that you're in for something really special on the record – one of the best-ever soundtracks from the mighty Roy Budd, the man who also gave the world the superb score for Get Carter! There's a few elements here that echo the music for that famous film – including some inventive percussion, moody basslines, and a great use of space – and the lineup of musicians features some surprising contributions from important British jazz artists – including Kenny Baker on trumpet and Tubby Hayes on tenor, Frank Barber on percussion, and Jeff Clyne on bass – plus Roy himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, harpsichord, and piano! This is the first-ever extended presentation of music from the soundtrack, a superb treat throughout – with titles that include "Mr Easy", "Death In The Shower", "Alright Alex", "Find A Solution", "The Deal", "Never Think Twice", "Waiting For Murder", "Main Theme", "Somebody's Going To Have To Kill Him", and "Borrowed Time".
