Earl KlughCrazy For You ... LP
Liberty, 1981. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Earl Klugh steps along with a smooth and soulful groove here – one that mixes his own acoustic guitar with warm electric instrumentation, and some nice use of strings as well! Arrangements are by a few different folks who all help shape the sound of the set – Greg Phillinganes, Patrick Williams, Dave Matthews, and Johnny Mandel – all talents who know how to hit the right balance of soul and sophistication to work well with Klugh's guitar! Titles include "I'm Ready For Your Love", "Soft Stuff", "Broadway Ramble", "Calypso Getaway", "Crazy For You", and "Twinkle". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousStrange Breaks & Mr Thing 2 – More Rock, Funk, Soul, Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living ... CD
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 16.98
A fantastic funky follow-up to the first Mr Thing compilation from BBE – and a set that's equally filled with rare and soulful grooves! If we didn't know better, we'd swear he went into our crates and pilfered our own record collections – because the package contains plenty of overlooked cuts that we've loved for years, but which have never gotten their due – and not even all of them are from totally obscure pressings or small indie labels – just the kind of records that people pass over sometimes, because they don't know how great they sound! There's lots and lots and lots of deeply funky numbers on the collection – and the package really takes us back to the glory days when BBE compilations were always turning us onto something new – especially during the Keb Darge glory days. 2CD set features one mixed disc, one unmixed – with titles that include "Back Ground Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Searching For Soul" by Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers, "ABC" by Hot Butter & Soul, "Spooky Do" by Dick Walter, "The Horse" by Val Merral's Orchestra, "It's Just Begun" by Hot City Bump Band, "Sally" by Frank Pleyer Big Band, "Love Is Just A Word" by Johnny Griffith Inc, "Can't Stop Talkin" by Art & Ron, "Family Affair" by The Generation Gap, "Gacek" by Jerzy Milian, "Rockin Chair" by John L Watson with White Mouse, "Pink Panther" by Alan Tew, "Twinkle Stars Boo Galoo (live)" by Oscar Harris & The Twinkle Stars, "The Message" by Tinga Stewart, and "Pru Urebu" by The Rias Orchestra. ✨✧ Sunburst BandUntil The End Of Time Presented By Joey Negro ... CD
Z Records (UK), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A soaring batch of boogie from the Sunburst Band – the group's long-awaited second album, and just as incredible as the first! Dave Lee's really gone all out for this session – dipping back into his classic references to feature vocals by older club singers that include Norma Jean and Lucy Martin of Chic, Taka Boom, and even Linda Clifford – while still getting the group to groove in that instant-classic blend of clubby rhythms and jazzy riffs! The sound is incredible – like finding some lost indie disco album from the end of the 70s – steeped in soulful production, and coming across as a stone winner on every single track! Imagine the excitement you felt when you first heard Incognito – and at that, you've only got a small bit of the sound! Titles include "Twinkle", "We Will Turn You On", "Until The End Of Time", "Fly Away (parts 1 & 2)", "Far Beyond", and "Just Do It". CD

✨✧ Kinky FriedmanThey Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore ... CD
Epic/Bear Family (Germany), 1974/1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
With a look like that on the cover, and a title like that on the front, you can bet that Kinky Friedman was out to ruffle the mainstream world of country music in the 70s – which he maybe did at a level that was even more powerful than Kris Kristofferson or Willie Nelson with recordings like these! Kinky's 70s group was named the Texas Jewboys – and it's almost as if he borrowed a bit of political wit and social agenda from The Fugs, then found a way to turn it towards more conventional country music – often at a level that made a fair bit of these tunes pretty darn catchy! Friedman's sometimes thought of as only a comedic talent, but there's a depth here that's really surprising – very much in the best alt-country mode of the generation of David Allen Coe, Joe Ely, Jerry Jeff Walker, and some of his more successful contemporaries. CD features 25 tracks in all – two albums for Epic, plus bonus cuts – and titles include "Homo Erectus", "Men's Room LA", "Bananas & Cream", "Dear Abbie", "Twinkle", "Sold American", "If I Never Have Another Hit", "Ballad Of Ira Hayes", "They Ain't Makin Jews Like Jesus Anymore", and "Rapid City South Dakota". ✨✧ ChasePure Music ... LP
Epic, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The third album from the mighty Chase – proof that the group was still going strong several years after their groundbreaking debut! The grooves here are almost tighter than before – a bit more complicated instrumentally, with some of the trumpets backed off a bit, to leave more room for great lines on guitar and keyboards – really stretching out over the propulsive groove of the rhythms. There's still some vocals on the record, but they seem a bit more on the backburner than on the group's earliest efforts – and titles include "Close Up Tight", "Twinkles", "Weird Song #1", "Run Back To Mama", and "Bochawa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is lightly faded at the spine.)
