✨✧ ReplacementsSorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash (4CD box set – with bonus LP) ... LP
Twin Tone/Rhino, 1981. New Copy 4CD & LP ... Just Sold Out!
The Replacements look a lot more punk rock on the cover than on some of their later albums for Warner Brothers – and they sound a lot more punk, too – packing in 18 short songs on this early set that blisters with their youthful, inventive energy! Even working at a level that's hard and fast, Paul Westerberg is still a hell of a songwriter and singer – and manages to pack these songs with a depth of expression that most of his contemporaries wouldn't hit until years later – that open, honest approach that had these guys coming out of nowhere, and blowing everyone's mind at the time. Titles include "Takin A Ride", "Carless", "Hangin Downtown", "Johnny's Gonna Die", "More Cigarettes", "Shiftless When Idle", "Shutup", "Raised In The City", and "Somethin To Du". This amazing package is overflowing with goodies – CD1 features the 2021 remaster of the album, plus a b-side; CD2 features The Early Recordings, with 25 rare tracks; CD3 features Tape's Rolling, with studio outtakes, alternates, and home demos; CD4 features a KFAI concert from 1981, with 27 tracks in all! Then, the LP features The Alternate Sorry Ma – a completely different version of the core album – all wrapped up in a heavy, hardcover book package – with pages of rare photos, liner notes, and memorabilia! ✨✧ ReplacementsLet It Be ... LP
Twin Tone/Rhino, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The masterpiece by one of the greatest, most sincere rock bands of all time! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as honest and heartfelt. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". LP, Vinyl record album

Michael FeinbergFrom Where We Came ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. Used ... $9.99
Bassist Michael Feinberg has a round, rich tone on this record, right from the start – a great way of setting up a superb lineup that features Dave Liebman on soprano sax, Noah Preminger on tenor, Gary Versace on piano, and Ian Froman on drums! Liebman's sharpness is balanced wonderfully by the depth of Preminger – a twin-reed pairing that really makes the album sound like something special, and different – very much living up to the spirit of the strong original material by Feinberg, which comprises the entire set. The quality of the record is a bit hard to describe in words, but if you know the players, the meeting is even better on record than it is on paper – on titles that include "Louisville", "Cairo", "Nogales", "Tokyo", "East St Louis", and "Pontiac". ✨✧ Coleman Hawkins with Eddie Lockjaw DavisNight Hawk ... CD
Swingville/OJC, 1960. Used ... $14.99
Beautiful late work from Coleman Hawkins – mellow genius that wins us over time and time again over the years! The set's actually a twin-tenor outing – with both Hawk and Eddie Jockjaw Davis – the latter of whom, as proved with Johnny Griffin and others, is a perfect partner for any other player on his horn – one able to slide in just the right way, augmenting things and adding his voice while never overdoing it. Given the long tracks on the record, and the very easygoing rhythms from Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – you've got a cracker of a record, and one that yeilds more and more upon each new listen! Titles include "There Is No Greater Love", "Night Hawk", "In A Mellow Tone", and "Pedalin". CD

Heshoo Beshoo GroupArmitage Road ... LP
Little Giant/We Are Busy Bodies, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
A rare South African jazz treasure – a set that's much more obscure than some of the bigger names of the scene, and which has a sound that's very different too! There's maybe a stronger American influence taking place here, especially in the rhythms, but also in the phrasing – and the twin alto and tenor in the lead, played by Henry and Stanley Sithole, respectively, really makes for a soulful, and dynamic sound! Instrumentation also includes guitar from Cyril Magubane, who holds the role that a piano might – and his sense of tone and phrasing are very unique, and bring a lot of special elements to the record – alongside bass from Ernest Mothle and drums from Nelson Magwaza. Titles include "Armitage Road", "Wait & See", "Amabutho", "Lazy Bones", and "Emakhaya". LP, Vinyl record album

Sire, 1985. Used ... $1.99
A big crossover classic for the champions of the Minneapolis scene – their first for Sire and featuring some of the greatest rock songs of the 80s, be it college radio, mainstream or any thing – greatness period! The sound is a bit more polished than the Twin Tone years, but there's no scrubbing out the shambling attitude, and truth be told, the more soul-searching material here is some of the best stuff they'd ever record. Includes the all time classics "Left Of The Dial" and "Hold My Life", plus "Little Mascara, Lay It Down Clown", "I'll Buy", "Kiss Me On The Bus", "Waitress In The Sky", "Swingin Party", and "Here Comes A Regular". Chuck Wayne & Joe PumaInteractions ... LP
Choice, 1974. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Great interactions here – thanks to magical twin-guitar work from Chuck Wayne and Joe Puma, both players who are incredibly well-matched for the session! Wayne's always had this beautifully mellow tone – and although Puma could sometimes be a bit more pointed on his 50s recordings, he slides in alongside Chuck's style wonderfully here – in a set that has both players really opening up with energy they hadn't had on record for years! The guitar lines are wonderful – very fluid, and wrapping around each other throughout – a magical sort of beauty that spins out on tracks that include "Let's Do It Again", "My Favorite Things", "Little Joe Waltz", "Lester Leaps In", "Baubles Bangles & Beads", and "I'll Get Along". Prestige, 1963. Fair ... $14.99
Darkly brooding work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader on Prestige – a very unique little record that features twin baritone sax support from Pepper Adams and Cecil Payne! Both players are wonderfully hip here – more than enough to match Trane's unique musical vision for the group's format – and the sound of the session is much edgier than some of his other Prestige work – which may be why the label chose not to issue it until 1963, even though it was recorded back in '57. There's a nice roughness here – the same inspirational early sound you'll get on Coltrane's early sides for Savoy or Imperial – and other players include Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Titles include "Cat Walk", "Dakar", "Route 4", "Velvet Scene", and "Witches Pit". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Lockjaw Davis/Johnny Griffin QuintetTough Tenors (aka Tough Tenors Again N Again) ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1970. Used ... $12.99
A smoking twin-tenor session for MPS – one that reunites the mighty talents of Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis! The album was done as an offshoot of both players' work for the Clarke Boland Big Band at the time – and the set was not only produced by CBBB impresario Gigi Campi, but also features a core rhythm trio from that ensemble – Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! Tracks are nice and long, and have a sound that really shows the evolution of both players since their famous recordings of the early 60s – tones that are even more modern and edgey at points, served up with a fire that hasn't died at all – and set loose on rhythms that move past the usual grooves you might have expected from their American sessions together. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Jim Dawg", "Gigi", "When We Were One", and "Again N Again". CD

Katarsis4Live At The Underground Water Reservoir ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
We're not entirely sure if the set was recorded underground, but there's definitely a sense of resonance that comes through in the performance – this echoey space that just seems to further intertwine the improvisations of the members of the group! Katarsis4 is an all-horn group – with Arminas Bizys on alto and baritone, Kazimieras Jusinskas on soprano and alto, Algridas Janonis on alto and hornpipe, and Danielus Pancerovas on baritone and alto – a blend of horns that makes for an amazing array of sounds and tones throughout the one long improvised performance on the set – sometimes all tied together, almost harmonizing – other times confronting each other in the open space of the performance – really beautiful, and in ways that are quite different than standard saxophone quartet material! There's an equal ear her for sonic possibilities as there is for music – and that makes for a hauntingly beautiful record throughout. CD

VariousPurple Snow – Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound (4LPs with book) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4 LPs ... $79.99 84.98
The amazing prequel to the big wave of funk and soul that exploded from the Minneapolis scene at the end of the 70s – early sounds that really point the way towards later grooves from folks like Prince, Alexander O'Neal, Andre Cymone, and the team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! The massive package is one of the best-ever sets from the Numero Group – not just a brilliant collection of music, but a rich book-like presentation of this important time in the Twin Cities scene – with a huge booklet of notes, memories, and loads of vintage photos! The whole thing's like taking the quality of Numero's books and mixing it with the focus of their best compilations – and the heavy package is filled with loads and loads of gems that really re-map the whole rise to glory of some of the bigger names of the time. You'll hear sounds here by folks who later recorded under more famous labels, and other sublime cuts by groups who never fully got their due at the time – such as the wonderful Haze, a group we've always loved. Instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and bass – but used in ways that are often a bit warmer and more spontaneous than the electric funk of later Minneapolis years – tied in more strongly to the sound of the underground in other American cities. Titles include "Get It On" by Prophets Of Peace, "I Love You" by Herman Jones, "Taste Of Love" by Aura, "Expense" by Cohesion, "It's The Things That You Do" by Flyte Tyme, "Higher" by Lewis Connection, "I Do Love My Lady" by Haze, "Stone Lover" by Music Love & Funk, "Together" by Rockie Robbins, "Do You Dare" by Alexander O'Neal, "I've Got My Eyes On You" by The Girls, "Can You Deal With It" by Quiet Storm, "Should I Or Should I Not" by Sue Ann Carwell, "No One Else Can Do It To Me Baby" by Mind & Matter, and "Oh Lover" by Orville Shannon. ✨✧ Archie SheppGemini ... CD
Archie Ball (France), 2002/2007. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A well-titled record from the mighty Archie Shepp – as the 2CD set works more like a twin-album package – given that each disc features a different performance! CD1 is billed as The Reverse – and has Shepp working in soaring, spiritual territory in a killer quartet – with sharp-edged brilliance that reminds us why we love his work on the Archie Ball label so much – as it's got a real back-to-basics quality that returns Archie to his most soulful styles of the 70s! Shepp plays both tenor and soprano, and the core group features Wayne Dockery on some massive bass, plus Tom McClung on piano and Steve McCraven on drums – and at one point, Chuck D steps in with a rhyme, and at another Stephane Guery plays a bit of guitar. Yet the main energy here comes from Shepp – whose tenor is tremendous, and really returned to his spiritual fire of decades back – on titles that include "Revolution", "Burning Bright", "Trippin", "Intertwining Spirits", "La Manzana", "Eva", and "Time Stood Still". CD2 is titled Live In Souillac – and has a really special performance from Archie, in a quartet with Amina Claudine Myers on piano, Ronnie Burrage on drums, and Cameron Brown on bass! Brown's bass is wonderful – and really holds the record together at the bottom – while Myers soars with spiritual tones on her piano, and even vocalizes a bit. Shepp plays tenor and soprano, and titles include "Hope Two", "Call Him", "Do You Want To Be Saved", and "Ujaama". CD

Eddie Lockjaw Davis & Johnny GriffinBlues Up & Down/Griff & Lock ... CD
Milestone/Jazzland, 1960/1961. Used ... $9.99
During the early 60s, tenor giants Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis teamed up to cut a series of monster LPs that are still defined today as some of the best examples ever of a twin tenor frontline! The records matched hardbop solo intensity with tight soul jazz grooving – and nobody was better equipped to handle such a combo as Griff and Lockjaw. Two of those great LPs are pulled together for this CD – Blues Up & Down and Griff & Lock, both originally issued for the Jazzland label, and darn hard to find. Rhythm is by either Junior Mance or Lloyd Mayers on piano, plus Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums. ✨✧ Buddy GuyRhythm & Blues ... CD
Silvertone, 2013. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Buddy blazes brightly on this double dose of Rhythm & Blues – one disc titled Rhythm and the other Blues – and both are prime late-career work from one of the world's foremost electric blues players! The stylistic differences aren't incredibly vast between the Rhythm half and the Blues halves. Buddy's playing is boisterous on both – borderline ferocious, actually – with rhythmic rockers more prominent on the Rhythm half, and bluesy structures and subject matter deeper on the Blues half. His voice and guitar playing are as strong as they've been in years – it seems like 70 is the new 40 for the amazing Mr. Guy! Titles include "Best In Town", "Justifyin'", "What's Up With That Woman", "What You Gonna Do About Me" with Beth Hart, "The Devil's Daughter", "Whiskey Ghost", "Meet Me In Chicago", "Too Damn Bad", "Evil Twin" with 3/4s of Aerosmith, "Blues Don't Care" with Gary Clark Jr., "Poison Ivy" and more. Most tunes are nice and laidback, although a few pick up the pace to mellow midtempo – and the set is filled with the kind of cuts that first had us falling in love with mellow soul many years back – when we started to realize that soul music wasn't just about funk! Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99 About December 4, 2021
A killer box set filled with some of the darker sounds to spring from the (predominantly) UK postpunk scenes – not just straightforward, black-clad, lacy-gloved goth – but a huge number of diverse, compelling tracks! This isn't the cliched goth of later years – as these are the original tracks that later spurred that movement – a shift from the anarch of the early punk years, through the nihilism of post-punk, to a darker acceptance of the shadowy corners of existence! Many tracks have eerie, dark or ominous overtones, but there is a huge variety of of sounds and styles – from raw to ornate, aggressive to ethereal. Includes tracks by Joy Division, Public Image Ltd, The Cure, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Adam & The Ants, Dead Can Dance, Sisters Of Mercy and similarly legendary names– but the included songs are often pretty obscure, and they are lots of relatively underground and unknown acts, too. 80+ songs on 5CDs, with a nice booklet. Includes "Shadowplay" by Joy Division, "The Black Cat" by UK Decay, "Beautiful Monsters" by Folk Devils, "The Hanging Garden" by The Cure, Gallery Of Shame" by Low Life, "She Cries Alone" by Skeletal Family, "Tabletalk" by Adam & The Ants, "In Our Angelhood" by Cocteau Twins, "Stigmata Martyr" by Bauhaus, "Love Puppets" by Legendary Pink Dot, and many more! ✨✧ Bill RussoWorld Of Alcina ... LP
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious recordings ever from Bill Russo – the composer/arranger who first rose to fame with Stan Kenton, and who's working here in an even more modern extension of Kentonite ideals! Side one of the record features Russo's beautiful composition "The World Of Alcina" – a tune originally written as a jazz ballet, but which comes across here with the fluid tones and deep colors of some of the more serious jazz soundtracks from the time. The 18 minute piece features some especially great work on horns – played by a large brace of brass instruments used with the careful, sensitive styles that clearly show an influence from Kenton. Side two features shorter tunes – most composed by Russo too, and played in ways that resonate more strongly with west coast small combo work of the time. There's a nice sense of counterpoint on most numbers, and a few tunes feature great interplay between Russo's valve trombone, Bill Porter's slide trombone, and the twin tenors of Sandy Mosse and Bill Trujillo – while others have a more open soloing style, with just Russo and Trujillo as the main horns. Rhythm is by Eddie Baker on piano, Israel Crosby on bass, and Mickey Simonetta on drums – and tracks include "For My Sister", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "L'Affair Bugs", "Bill's Blues", and "Speculum". Where some of Susumu's predecessors were pioneers in music like this, it's almost as if Yokota is here trying to bring forward all the other global elements that had been influenced by earlier Japanese electronic music – but took things into all their own directions – directions that are embraced here with a real sense of beauty and balance! Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great full length album from Sudan Archives – an artist whose name is a bit misleading – as there's nothing Sudanese or archival in her sound! But the vibe of the record is maybe captured by the image on the cover – as the music all features violin, but in a contemporary soul setting that's also blended with her vocals – set to backings that are crispy and cosmic, and which maybe live up to the best sort of future soul music we were hearing from the Stones Throw label over a decade ago! Yet the violin really changes things up – almost making a 4AD take on soul music at times, although with an overall style that's a lot more contemporary Cali than vintage London – on titles that include "Did You Know", "Iceland Moss", "Coming Up", "House Of Open Tuning", "Limitless", "Stuck", Honey", "Ballet Of The Unhatched Twins", "Down On Me", and "Pelicans In The Summer".
