✨✧ Undisputed TruthCosmic Truth/Higher Than High ... CD
Gordy/Kent (UK), 1975. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of late Motown albums from Undisputed Truth – both issued here back to back, as they originally appeared for the label! First up is Cosmic Truth – a fantastic 70s album from Undisputed Truth – and the first to fully feature the new version of the lineup, after the Magictones had been recruited to form the second version of the group! The sound here is even funkier and more guitar-based than before – a fully-realized take on the Norman Whitfield modes that had been brewing up since his late 60s work with The Temptations – almost as tripped-out at times as early 70s Funkadelic – as if Undisputed Truth were being put forth as a Detroit challenge to the George Clinton universe! Production and arrangements are great – very far-reaching at times, with some bigger ideas in the mix – although all the tight funky soul elements that always made these guys so great. Titles include "1990", "Squeeze Me Tease Me", "Earthquake Snake", "Spaced Out", "Lil Red Ridin Hood", "Got To Get Me Some Lovin", and the great cut "UFO's". Higher Than High is a great later Motown effort from the Undisputed Truth – working in a groove that's a bit tighter and more upbeat than before, but still plenty darn great! Norman Whitfield is still very firmly in charge of the group's sound on the record – arranging, producing, and writing most of the cuts on the album – and he's doing a great job of keeping his sound fresh here – not just sticking in the bass-heavy styles of previous years, and instead moving into some fresher territory that has the group continuing to grow nicely. In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the grooves to come on Norman's own Whitfield label – a great batch of well-crafted titles that include "Overload", "Higher Than High", "Poontang", "I Saw YOu When You Met Her", "Help Yourself (second version)", "I'm In The Red Zone", "Boogie Bump Boogie", and "Ma". ✨✧ Undisputed TruthNothing But The Truth (Undisputed Truth/Down To Earth/Law Of The Land/bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first three albums by Undisputed Truth – finally on CD, with bonus tracks too! First up is the amazing debut of Undisputed Truth – one of the coolest new Motown groups of the 70s – and one of the few that really continued the experimental legacy of the label in the late 60s! As with the Temptations during their psychedelic years, Undisputed Truth are handled by superproducer Norman Whitfield – who does a fantastic job of mixing deeper ideas and righteous themes with some of the soaring soul that was the Motown stock in trade – a wonderful blend that made these guys one of the best groups poised to push the label into the new decade! Titles include the huge hit "Smiling Faces Sometimes", plus lots of covers of cool tracks like "California Soul", "Like A Rolling Stone", "Ball Of Confusion", and "You Got The Love I Need". Law Of The Land is an unstoppable groove from The Undisputed Truth – a group who worked with Norman Whitfield in the same psychedelic soul territory as The Temptations – and who arguably got the sound across even better than them! This set's not as much of a bit hit as the group's other records from the time – but that makes it sound even fresher and more fierce – loads of those hard-rolling basslines you'd expect from Whitfield's production – and some soaring arrangements from Paul Riser and David Van DePitte, both of whom give the album a sense of majesty to match its inherent righteousness. Titles include "Law of The Land" and "Mama I Got A Brand New Thing" – plus covers of Temps tunes "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and "Just My Imagination" – and other covers that include "Love & Happiness", "If I Die", "Feelin' Alright", and "Killing Me Softly", done in the full soul mode of the group. Down To Earth features Undisputed Truth at the height of their powers – still working in the psychedelic soul style they forged with Norman Whitfield at the end of the 60s – but with a groove that's tighter and sharper than ever before! We might well call the record the funkiest the group ever cut – as Whitfield's production really brings the rhythms into strong focus, while still letting the righteous message in the lyrics shine through in the group's strong sense of interplay – that back/forth between male and female vocals that really helps the group create a sense of social conversation. Titles include the Whitfield originals "Help Yourself", "Big John Is My Name", "Save My Love For A Rainy Day", and "Law Of The Land" – but the best tracks might be their covers, like "Love & Happiness" and "Our Day Will Come", both totally remade here into great new versions! CD features 6 more bonus tracks – including "Let's Go Back To Day One" and "Gonna Keep On Tryin Till I Win Your Love" – plus single edits of "What's Going On", "What It Is", "You Make Your Own Heaven & Hell", and "Law Of The Land". ✨✧ Sons of TruthMessage From The Ghetto (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Stax/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most righteous albums ever issued by Stax Records – from the title of the record, to the cover, to the grooves laid down by the group! The album was originally issued on Truth – the gospel subsidiary of Stax – and while it does have a bit of a spiritual component, the group's also plenty darn funky too – and the record has a feel that's far more secular than most other gospel records of the time! In fact, the whole thing may well stand as one of the best mainstream examples of the funky gospel genre of the 70s – one of the few records of this type issued on a slightly bigger label, even though the set still is something of a rarity! There's plenty of fuzzy guitar and electric piano in the mix – and the religion in the song lyrics is fairly buried in most cuts, and the overall approach is more one of general spiritualism and humanity, than it is preachy and churchy. Tracks include "The Ghetto", "Son Of The Deacon", "Give It Up", "God Bless The Children", and "He's All We Need". LP, Vinyl record album

Rance Allen GroupTruth Is Where It's At ... LP
Truth/Stax, 1972. Very Good ... $29.99
An excellent album by Rance Allen – one of the most overlooked talents in Stax's early 70s roster, and a real genius for blending his gospel roots with influences of the soul and funk scene of his time. Proof of this is the album's great remake of "There's Gonna Be a Showdown", done in a style that's more rootsy than other Philly versions, but which uses that good Philly bounce to push Rance's deep baritone into a whole new groove. Other good tracks include "To the Other Man", "If I Could Make the World Better", and "That Will Be Good Enough For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Crushed Velvet & The VelveteersLove & Truth ... LP
Vintage League, 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A nicely collaborative project from Crushed Velvet – aka Alan Evans of Soulive, working here at a level that's much different than the style of that jamming instrumental trio! Evans handles much of the instrumentation here, along with help from some guest horn players, and very nice organ from Darby Wolf – but the main difference is in the singers, who are a really great lineup that not only handle lead vocals from track to track, but also pen their own lyrics to the instrumental tunes crafted by Alan! The lyrical contributions make the record much stronger than just another funk set with a singer thrown into the mix – and singers include Brother Goodlove, Kim Dawson, Yanick, and Saundra Williams – on titles that include "You Are My Home", "Good Thang", "Really Can't Get Over You", "We Are Not OK", "Say Their Names Be The Change", "As Far As We Know", and "Keep On Fightin". Columbia/Esoteric (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A pair of albums by The Flock – with bonus tracks too! First up is the group's self-titled debut – far-reaching sounds from The Flock – a group who were maybe one of the best American acts at the end of the 60s to blend trippy rock with the big new wave of jazz fusion! These guys definitely use horns in a way that link them to the chunky groove of early work by Chicago or Blood Sweat & Tears – but they're also clearly going for a more long-haired vibe, too – especially when they open up on some acoustic stringed instrumentation – such as 12-string guitar or violin, both of which are handled by Jerry Goodman in a really great way! These instruments really shape some of the sound of the set – especially the violin when it's used in these freewheeling passages that might give Jean-Luc Ponty a run for his money – but there's also a core, tight soulful sound that balances things out nicely – as does some of the heavy drums and fuzzy guitar! Titles include "Clown", "I Am The Tall Tree", "Store Bought Store Thought", and "Truth" – plus a very cool funky cover of The Kinks' "Tired Of Waiting". Dinosaur Swamps has a slightly different sound than previously from The Flock – a set that brings in some sweet Hammond organ to the group's mix of jazzy horns and freewheeling guitar and violin – all in a way that even makes the whole thing better than before! The organ is never too jamming, but used at times to give the music a subtle majesty – and at other times to maybe percolate a bit more soul – while the previous instrumentation on guitar, violin, trumpet, and saxes is only even better than before – really setting these guys apart with one of the most unique visions in American jazz rock – especially when they maybe hit a few other musical roots too. Titles include "Green Slice", "Big Bird", "Hornschmeyer's Island", "Crabfoot", "Mermaid", and "Uranian Sircus". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Afrika", "Just Do It", "Clown (part 1 & 2)", "What Would You Do If The Sun Died", "Lollipops & Rainbows", "Chanja", and "Atlantians Truckin Home". Leata GallowayNaked Truth ... CD
CBS/Expansion (UK), 1988. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A sweet late 80s soul set from Leata Galloway – a great singer with a strong musical theater background and too few solo soul sets like this one! Leata's voice is naturally deep, but her range is incredible – which allows her to bring both heavy strength and fragile delicacy, plus these incredible little vocal embellishments without ever laying it on too thickly. To put it succinctly, she's an impeccable singer and knows how to utilize her gifts – which sure makes us wish that she made more records! The production by Nick Martinelli and Preston Glass is nicely smooth and built to last, with some telling period touches, but the album holds up very, very well. Titles include "With Every Beat Of My Heart", "Fascination", "Shades Of Blue", "Cry Me A River", "I'm Scared Of You", "The Naked Truth", "One Of These Nights" and more. CD

Oliver NelsonBlues & The Abstract Truth ... CD
Impulse, 1961. Used ... $4.99
One of the all-time classics of early 60's mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Nelson had been bumping around a variety of sessions before this one – as a leader, sideman, and arranger – but it was with this album that his true talents really unfolded – sparkling with a depth of imagination and expression that marked him as one of the greatest artists in 60s American jazz! The group on the set is an all-star sextet – featuring Paul Chambers, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Roy Haynes, and Freddie Hubbard – a disparate group of players who manage to come together with Nelson and find a unique voice that's rarely been duplicated again! The album features 6 fantastic compositions by Nelson, including "Stolen Moments", "Hoe Down", and "Yearnin". A fantastic record – and one that you can't go wrong with! CD

A famous broadcast performance by this legendary bassist – but one that's presented here in a version that features 40 minutes of music that never aired on the original program! This well-recorded set captures Jaco Pastorius at his height – after a huge step forward in sound and style in the 70s – to a time when he was exploring so many new ideas, and new ways of expressing himself on the electric bass – an instrument that he completely transformed for generations to come! The group's a large one – Jaco's Word Of Mouth ensemble – with Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – plus Othello Molineaux on some mighty cool steel drums. There's a larger horn section, too – and Toots Theielmans plays a bit of guest harmonica – and most tracks are nice and long. Malvina ReynoldsMalvina Reynolds Sings The Truth ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Beautiful folk work from Malvina Reynolds – spare, raw and wonderfully intimate tunes from one of the most interesting characters of the 60s folk revolution! Malvina Reynolds Sings The Truth is as endearingly forthright and honest as this stuff gets, remarkably good natured and immune to the cynicism of some of her much younger peers – without ever moving close to the cloying cuteness of the mainstream folkies. This set includes what's probably her most famous tune, "Little Boxes" – presently being covered and covered and covered again by modern artists of varying worth over the titles of the TV show Weeds – but unlike Malvina's, those are all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same. T-Riot (Pietro Vincenti/Camillo Pace/Francesco Lomagistro)Different Truth (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2017. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
A rock-solid trio session, with a top-shelf Italian groove pedigree – as the group features two members from Berardi Jazz Connection, and the pianist from Quintetto X! You might remember those two groups from their more club jazz-oriented projects from the previous decade or two – but this time around, all three musicians are in a straighter jazz vein – yet still one that's filled with plenty of rhythm! The piano, bass, and drums come together fantastically here – with Pietro Vincenti on acoustic keys, Camillo Pace on bass, and Francesco Lomagistro on drums – romping together through some great titles of their own, and a few really excellent remakes as well. And while the focus on rhythm is quiet strong, Vincenti gets off some especially great solo moments too – breaking from the bass and drums, while still holding their energy – in a way that almost seems inspired by classic Brazilian trios of the 60s. Titles include versions of Gary Bartz's "Libra", Billy Taylor's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", and Prince's "Sign Of The Times" – plus the originals "Pharoah Of Love", "Sad Devil", "Desert Highway", and "The Long Goodbye". A fantastic meeting between pianist Pat Thomas and alto saxophonist Matana Roberts – recorded live in London, and showing an amazing sense of sympathy between the two improvisers – even though they're normally separated by the space of an ocean! Thomas has these really dark, moody tones on the piano at times – almost as if he's playing with a prepared version of the instrument, although we're guessing that he's showing more of a Cecil Taylor-like understanding of the full tonal possibilities of the piano – even though his approach is very different than Cecil. Matana has this crispy soulfulness and depth – almost as if she's bringing the best modern traditions on the alto into play with the richer currents of the tenor – with results that are breathtaking throughout! The set features one long track – "The Truth". LP, Vinyl record album

Three PiecesVibes Of Truth ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A great little album of jazz funk – and the only record we've ever seen by this group! The 3 Pieces may not have lasted long in the record business, but this rare album from 1975 has made them legends on the rare groove scene for years. The record was cut during the height of the jazz funk years at Fantasy Records – and it features Donald Byrd handling the production chores, in a similar manner to the style that he used with the more famous Blackbyrds, who were also recording for Fantasy the time. The record features loads of electric piano and ARP, plus some tight and smooth guitar, and a nice rolling groove that is very catchy. A number of tracks have vocals – in kind of a subdued soul mode – and tracks include the groove classics "Backed Up Against The Wall", "Shortnin Bread", "Concrete Jungle", and "Vibes Of Truth". And believe it or not, there aren't any vibes on the album! CD

VariousGospel Truth – The Complete Singles Collection ... CD
Stax/Craft, Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
An overdue look at a very cool record label – the short-lived Gospel Truth imprint, which was an outlet for the more spiritual side of Stax Records in the early 70s! The music is gospel, but often has plenty of the best Memphis soul elements of more popular Stax/Volt work of the time – and there's a nice criss-crossing of artists going on here – so that you'll get some gospel singers moving into very soulful territory, and some soul artists trying their hand at music that's a bit more righteous overall! And while albums by The Rance Allen Group on the label have been reissued over the years, this is the first time anyone's pulled together the much more obscure 45s – which gives us a much bigger picture of the label at work. The set features 34 tracks in all – and titles include "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" by Reverend W Bernard Avant, "He's Mine" by Jacqui Verdell, "At The Feet Of The Master" by Blue Aquarius, "I'm A Child Of The King" by The People's Choir Of Operation Push, "Reflections" by Louise McCord, "We're The Salt Of The Earth" by Rance Allen Group, "Ride Out The Storm" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "If The Shoe Fits Wear It" by The 21st Century, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" by Rev Maceo Woods, "Hot Line To Jesus" by Rance Allen Group, "I Got The Vibes" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "Consider Me" by Terry Lynn Community Choir, "Keep My Baby Warm" by Charles May & Annette May Thomas, and "Do It Yourself" by Jimmy Jones. Leon Thomas takes his vocals to new heights – moving past the straight spiritual jazz modes of his work with Pharoah Sanders, to embrace a whole host of new styles too! There's a slight trace of the blues promised in the title, but always inflected through a more soulful approach overall – thanks to backings arranged by Pee Wee Ellis – known best for his work with the James Brown band of the late 60s! Pee Wee handles reed solos on the tunes, and the group also features some great work on keyboards from Neal Creque – from Pucho's band – plus some guitar from Cornell Dupree and Larry Coryell. Yet Thomas is clearly the main attraction – sounding beautifully expressive at that level that no other jazz singer could ever hope to touch – that genre-starting style that continues to amaze us after all these years. Numero, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredibly beautiful work from Willie Wright – an album of folksy soul with a slight island spirit – one that nicely nestles Willie's music in a space somewhere between the best 70s work of Terry Callier and Jon Lucien! The sound is wonderful – lean, stripped-down, and wonderfully personal – just the right fit for the sensitive lyrics in Wright's tunes! Instrumentation is mostly bass and guitar, plus some great flute and light percussion – produced with a sound that's just right, too – hardly what you'd expect for the time, without any too-slick modes at all. This beautiful reissue may well set a whole new standard for the Numero label, too – as it comes with the usual great sound and rich notes, plus a great package that also features a really unique 5" vinyl single! There's also 3 bonus tracks added to the record – and titles include "Nantucket Island", "Lady Of The Year", "Love Is Expensive", "Dressing For The Occasion", "Indian Reservation", "Right On For The Darkness", and "Africa". Funky genius from the legendary Stax studios! During the 60s, Stax was well known for their work in the soul music field – turning out hit singles by the likes of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and others – but after 1968, when the label finished their deal with Atlantic, they really started getting down and dirty, and hitting on all burners in the funk department. This tasty set features 21 tracks from those exiting years –many of them only ever issued on singles, and a few of them by some of the label's more famous LP artists – but all of them with a nice Memphis funky groove! Titles include "Turn Your Damper Down" by Rufus Thomas, "Broadway Freeze" by Harvey Scales, "Life Is Funky" by Round Robin Monopoly, "The Dryer" by Roy Lee Johnson, "She's My Old Lady Too" by Lee Sain, "Slipped & Tripped" by The Sweet Inspirations, "Brothers & Sisters" by Kim Weston, "Movin Dancer" by Bobby Holley, "Eli's Pork Chop" by Little Sonny, "A Man Never Knows" by Chris & Shack, "Grab A Handful" by Art Jerry Miller, "I'll Kill A Brick (About My Man)" by Hot Sauce, "Watch The Dog That Brings The Bone" by Inez Foxx, "Sock Soul" by The Bar Kays, and "Getting Funky Round Here" by Black Nasty! One of the all-time classics of early 60s mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Stax/Craft, Early 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Tyrone Ashley's Funky Music MachineLet Me Be Your Man ... LP
Truth & Soul, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Lost funky soul from Jersey – incredible workby Tyrone Ashley & The Funky Music Machine – a rare batch of gritty harmony soul and some mighty funky numbers! Tyrone, aka Sonny Campbell, and the Machines were contemporaries of the Parliaments and future P-Funkers George Clinton and Bernie Worrell in 1960s Plainfield, NJ – and they just missed some opportunities to make it in the national landscape. They ended up working with the Phil LA Of Soul label out of Philly in the late 60s, which resulted in one great single and an LP that was never released. The deep funky soul diggers at Truth & Soul have put together some of the Phil LA Of Soul tracks plus previously unreleased material cut at Ashley's own Record Hut studio during this period – great stuff that rolls from the grittiest of harmony group soul, with soaring lead vocals – to some straight killer funk tunes! Incredible stuff! Tracks include "Come On Home", "Just A Little While Longer", "I Can't Help Myself", "For Your Love", "Let Me Be Your Man" (inst), "Sing A Song Sister", "Can't Stay Away", "Love Sweet Love", "Gotta Clean Up The World" (Pt 1 & Pt 2), "I Want My Baby Back" (inst) and "Does Frankie Ever Call My Name. Truth & Soul/Big Crown, 2005. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily one of the greatest new funk records of the 21st Century – and a set that goes way beyond some of the cliches that are currently gripping others in the deep funk underground! El Michels Affair have a cool, easygoing style to their music – one that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk – and which makes for tunes that have a looser structure overall, which allows much more room for instrumental interplay, and the kind of sweet surprises that make the album so great! These guys have a real penchant for an unusual rhythm and interesting instrumental flair – and they borrow as much from 70s soundtracks and Latin albums as they do from the funky 45 era that clearly gave them their start. Totally fresh all the way through, and a record that delights us a lot more than we might have expected! A contemporary group from the Truth & Soul universe, but one who work in the best classic style we love from the label – although at a level that takes us back to 70s reggae, not funk or soul! The album's presented in glorious mono, which really goes well with the old school Kingston-style production – no tricks, gimmicks, or contemporary efforts to make things too overly complicated – just core instrumentation from a really great combo behind the vocals of Junior Thomas – who's got this soulful vocal approach that takes us back to Studio One legends like Jackie Opel or Alton Ellis! In fact, the label could have easily presented this as a lost classic, or unreleased tapes – and our hats are off to them for doing to Jamaican sounds what they've been doing for years to American funk and soul. Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". The 2CD set features crucial European performances by Albert Ayler in the mid 60s – one that were issued until many years after the recording, but which has become one of the sharpest pictures of his genius at the time! The vibe is different than the Ayler albums for ESP – still very much in the same territory, but with this approach that's really reaching out with a deeply spiritual consciousness – an energy to embrace the whole history of jazz, both very old and very new – and re-form its entire ideology into a richly personal expression. Ayler's tremendous on tenor, but Don Ayler is often equally great on trumpet – and the unusual group features Michel Samson on violin, William Fowell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums. The set features versions of "Truth Is Marching In", "Omega (Is The Alpha)", "Our Prayer – Bells" and "Infinite Spirit – Japan" from Stockholm, juxtaposed with differing performances of those titles in Berlin, plus the riveting closer "Ghosts – Bells", also from Berlin. Rhino/ABC, Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Mid 80s. Used 4CD & Book ... $14.99
Sublime stuff! Sure, it's easy to sit back and say that you don't really dig Ray Charles albums that mix together country music and soul, and that you prefer his hard raw raunchy Atlantic recordings from the earlier days. But let's be honest, Ray really made his biggest splash with this stuff – and although it became extremely popular over the years, it's also part of a huge country soul tradition that's a very accurate representation of the rich crossover culture going on in southern soul, a tradition that for some reason always gets underplayed by folks who want to carve up the world in easy racial lines. Truth is, Ray was not the only soul artist to embrace country, and we can think of a host of others – including Solomon Burke, Ivory Joe Hunter, Joe Simon, Clarence Carter, Brook Benton, and Bobby Womack who all participated in this rich tradition. This set's essential if you're interested in checking out this side of Ray's career – and the price is pretty nice, considering that you get 4CDs, a great book, and 92 songs in all! Work is pulled from Ray's classic ABC sides in the format, plus others from before and after that generation. Titles include "A Born Loser", "I'm Movin On", "Busted", "Crying Time", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Half As Much", "No Letter Today", "Oh Lonesome Me", "Ring Of Fire", "What Am I Living For", "Let Your Love Flow", "Down In The Valley", and "Take These Chains From My Heart". Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

The title certainly gets it right – as the album's one of the funkiest ever from guitarist George Freeman, and one of the few to really hit that messed-up groove he was working in the clubs before his mid 70s retreat to Chicago! The style here is often all over the map – a mix of soul jazz and funkier numbers, but often served up with less of the direction than you'd get on Prestige, and even less of that on Groove Merchant – more in a raw small combo mode, with Freeman's guitar hitting plenty of raspy notes and weird solo excursions that keep even the mellower tunes exciting! The record features 2 different groups – one with John Young on piano, the other with Bobby Blevins on organ – and brother Von Freeman plays tenor sax on the whole set, although not nearly in the spotlight as George! (Definitely in keeping with something that Von told George many years back – quoted to us by George – "When you've got your own album, make sure that people know that you're the star!") All tracks are original, which furthers the special, intimate vibe of the group – written and performed by a quartet that features Art Hirihara on piano and Fender Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – matching the energy of Gillece at every turn, on titles that include "Rattles", "Extraction", "Event Horizon", "Going On Well", "Don't Despair", "Outnumbered", and "Glad To Be Back". Ace (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Strong new work from Dana Gillespie – a British singer, but one who's always had a love of American roots in her music – way back to when she was just performing as a schoolgirl back in the 60s! Yet somehow along the way, Dana didn't always get the setting that her voice deserved – sometimes records that were too polished, or to commercial – which is definitely not the case here – as Gillespie sings in this moody, mature vibe that really fits her look on the cover – given small group backing headed up by guitarist Jake Zaitz, who also co-produced the record, and wrote most of the songs with Dana too. The whole thing's great – understated, in a way that maybe even brings out more magic in Dana's vocals than she had back in the day – on titles that include "Putting My Dreams On Hold", "Howling Howling", "The Truth About Lying", "We Share The Same Sky", "Beat Of My Own Drum", and "Back In The Day". If you like Dizzy Gillespie as much as us, you'll know that he kept on getting better and better as the years went on – continuing to evolve as a musician, into territory that's always very different than what he was giving the world a few years before! That's definitely the case here, on two live performances done for Dutch Radio in the late 70s – both of which feature a guitar as the key partner – with Rodney Jones on the first half, Ed Cherry on the second, and bass from Benjamin Brown and drums from the great Mickey Roker. Tracks are long, and open up in this really wonderful way – and the group is joined by percussionist Sheyvonne Wright on the second half, who also sings a bit too. There's a quality here that's much more in the best 70s work on the Muse label than you might expect – and titles include "Barcelona", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Toccata", "The Truth", "Night In Tunisia", "Manha De Carnaval", and Round Midnight". Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the best 70s mellow soul talents at Atlantic Records – sounding completely sublime here in a full set of Philly arrangements! The set was recorded at Sigma Sound – and is a great reminder that even during the disco years, the studio was still a great place to cut a heartbreaking ballad – the sort of number that younger Philly groups would have done for indie labels at the start of the 70s – polished up and given some real maturity here by The Major! There's also a few great groovers on the record too – but with that Philly poise that also still holds onto all the personality of the singer – and the arrangements are great throughout – handled by Norman Harris, Ron Kersey, and Bobby Eli – a perfect Philly team. Titles include "Walkin In The Footsteps", "Jealousy", "I Got Over Love", "Tynisa", "It's Got To Be Magic", and "What's The Use In The Truth". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A killer set of searing soulful spiritual material from Oliver Nelson – and one of his best albums of the 70s! There's hardly anything "Swiss" in the music – save for the fact that it was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Fest – as the large ensemble recording has Nelson at the helm of a very hip group of musicians – really stretching out into territory that's more Strata East than any of his other work, especially on the title track! In addition to the tenor from Gato Barberi and alto from Eddie Vinson – both featured on the title – the set also features Charles Tolliver and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Bosko Petrovic on vibes, Na Na on barimbau, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano. Side one features the soaring "Swiss Suite" – an extended number done for the set – and side two has a bit more Nelson touches coming into play with the progressive lineup – on titles that include "Stolen Moments", "Black Brown & Beautiful", and "Blues & The Abstract Truth". Warner, 1977. Good ... $1.99
An overlooked chapter in the New Birth sound of the 70s – one that has the group still working with all that joyous, righteous ensemble energy of their previous records – but with a slightly different vibe as well! There's been a few changes since before – no more leadership from Harvey Fuqua, and instead some excellent arrangements and production from Frank Wilson – plus some vocal leads at points from Leslie Wilson. All the new elements mix together nicely to create a sound that's almost a second chapter to New Birth that's similar to the Whitfield label recordings of Undisputed Truth – all the core elements still in place, but more of a late 70s funk group presentation overall. There's a few nice moogy elements in the mix, too – and titles include "Up Against The Wall", "The Mighty Army", "Your Love Is In My Veins", "Squeezing Too Much Living", and "How Will I Live". The album's got a smooth and slinky finish that has the band tightening up a lot from their Westbound years – going for a compressed spacey soul sound on some of the album's mellower numbers, in a style that's equally as mindblowing as their heavier funk. This approach makes for some really nicely tripped-out tunes that have some nice jazzy touches – expanding the group's sound way past the hits, into some complicated grooves that are plenty darn nice! In truth, the set might be billed as a Cedar Walton session – or maybe almost an Eastern Rebellion one – as the vibe here is very similar to that later group, with a strong tenorist working alongside Walton's trio, plus a bit of extra Latin percussion. Clifford Jordan delivers wonderful tenor throughout – and the core sound of Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums is as great as on any of that group's other wonderful albums of the time. A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". The album's got a very deep feel right from the start – not just because the lyrics and vocals are very powerful, but also because the group features a strong ensemble of nyabinghi drummers, who help take the music back to pre-reggae roots with their performance – which is mixed here with more familiar basslines and guitar that mark the mid 70s recording of the tunes. Production is by Tommy Cowan, who keeps things stripped-down enough to really let the core spirit of the music show through – and the tracks have achieved legendary status over the years, thanks both to their political power and purity of spirit. A pair of Ike & Tina Turner classics – back to back on one CD! First up is Come Together – a key crossover set for the soul duo! Ike and Tina Turner crossed over big by this point in their career – grabbing a lot of ears that were mostly listening to rock music, but who finally got that many of their heroes were influenced by the pair – who were then throwing things back towards all their copycats with a record like this! Case in point is the album's famous cover of "Come Together" – which has Tina hitting some of her slinkiest, sexiest modes on record – while also mixing things up with plenty of deep soul elements on other tunes too! There's a great blend of rock and soul – Fillmore vs Muscle Shoals – and in addition to "Come Together", other titles include "Contact High", "I Want To Take You Higher", "Honky Tonk Woman", "Evil Man", "Doin It", and "Young & Dumb". Nuff Said is one of the most iconic albums from the team of Ike & Tina Turner – a set recorded at a time when the duo were complete superstars in both the world of rock and soul – and were able to step out with a heck of a lot of power in the grooves! Ike produced and arranged the album in his studio, and he also changed the name of Kings Of Rhythm to The Family Vibes – showing that strong shift they'd made into funkier modes for the 70s – augmented here by the presence of Leon Ware's songwriting talents on a number of the songs. Tina's the real star, of course – and sounds tremendous on titles that include "Baby", "Sweet Flustrations", "I Love What You Do To Me", "Tell The Truth", "I Love Baby", and "Nuff Said". CD

Pure fantasticness from the great Kamasi Washington – a set that's much more compact than his sprawling Epic, but which has an equally wonderful vibe overall! The album features material that Washington performed at the Whitney Biennial – to accompany paintings by his sister – but the whole thing stands alone beautifully, with that free-flowing, always spiritual vibe that's made Washington one of the strongest young jazz talents to emerge in recent years! The music resonates strongly with the work of some of his key LA contemporaries – like Ronald Bruner Jr, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Thundercat – all of whom perform in the large ensemble – helping Kamasi's tenor soar to the skies on waves of collaborative joy. The Wind In The Willows have a sound that's a far bit more folksy than you'd expect from Harry's later work in Blondie – a style that blends acoustic guitars, bits of strings, woodwinds, and more – all together into a sweetly sunny blend that has the members of the group often singing with a bit of a harmony style! Amy WinehouseAmy Winehouse Collection (Frank/Back To Black/Lioness/Live In London/Rarities) (5CD set) ... CD
Universal, 2000s. New Copy 5CD ... $45.99 49.99
Way more than just a box set of the key albums from the all-too-short career of Amy Winehouse – as this massive package also features a wealth of rarities and live tracks – some making their CD debut in this limited collection! The set leads off with Frank – the stunning debut from UK soul singer Amy Winehouse – a vocalist with a sound that's instantly captivating, and which will be with us for years! Amy's clearly cut her chops in jazz, but also has a laidback and soulful personality – easily shifting between modes for the right mood of each song, without any of the pretensions that would ruin an album like this. The backings have a proud stepping feel that fits well with tunes like "In My Bed", "What Is It About Men", "F*ck Me Pumps", and "You Sent Me Flying" – really keeping Amy's spirit fresh throughout the whole set! Next is Back to Black – an incredible album from Amy Winehouse – even way better than her fantastic debut! Although a contemporary soul album, this one's steeped in tradition – soul styles that run the gamut from Detroit down to Kingston, and which are carried off here with a rougher, sharper-edged sound than before! The instrumentation on here is really mindblowing – almost at a Motown level, with isolated instruments really crackling out from the fuller backings – all set to rhythms that snap and bounce, and are almost a bit funky at times. Credit is definitely due to producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi – but Amy's vocals are really tremendous too – classic, but really personal and fresh! Titles include "Rehab", "Just Friends", "Back To Black", "Love Is A Losing Game", "He Can Only Hold Her", "Some Unholy War", and "Me & Mr Jones". Next is Lioness Hidden Treasures – a (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. Includes "Our Day Will Come", "Between The Cheats", "Tears Dry (Original Version)", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (2011)", "Like Smoke" feat Nas (and some eerily timely lyricism, as of this album's release date), "Valerie ('68 Version)", "Half Time", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Half Time", "Body & Soul" with Tony Bennett, "A Song For You" and more. Next is the 2LP set Live In London – the vinyl debut of material from the DVD of the same name – with titles that include "Just Friends", "Cherry", "Back To Black", "Wake Up Alone", "Tears Dry On Their Own", "He Can Only Hold Her/Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Valerie", "Rehab", "Me & Mr Jones", "Monkey Man" and more. Last is the album Remixes – which features the CD debut of 15 tracks – material from Frank and Back To Black – remixed by MJ Cole, Al Usher, Skeewiff, Truth & Soul, Ghostface, Hot Chip, and others. Motown (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99
A long-overdue fifth entry in this amazing series – and like the previous volumes, a double-length set of rare material from the Motown vaults! 20 of the 43 tracks on the set are previously unreleased – and all of the material here goes way past the hits – to really show the full amazing scope of music that Motown was recording back in the day – with obscure cuts from the big names on the label, and some equally great tracks from artists who never fully got their due! The groove is upbeat on most tracks – very much in the Northern Soul spirit of the label – and titles include "Whisper You Love Me Boy" by The Lewis Sisters, "True Fine Boy" by The Funk Brothers, "A Toast To The Lady" by Frank Wilson, "I Want A Love I Can See" by The Underdogs, "Don't Be Too Long" by Anita Knorl, "All I Have Left Are Memories" by Sammy Turner, "Hold On To Me Darling" by Ann Bogan, "Determination" by Ivy Jo Hunter, "I Don't Want You Anymore" by Chris Clark, "There's No Love Left" by Eddie Holland, "Then" by The Temptations, "A Miracle Happened" by Johnny Bristol, "All I Want Is A Little Bit Of Love" by Barbara McNair, "In Your Heart" by Patrice Holloway, "Tomorrow's Child" by Terry Johnson, "It" by Little Lisa, "When Someone's Good To You" by Oma Page, "Too Much To Hope For" by Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston, "I Wish I Liked You" by Connie Haines, "The Truth Does Hurt" by Funk Brothers, "I Don't Know What You Got" by Edwin Starr, "Only You" by Brian Holland, and "I Found My Love In You" by Tommy Good. VariousComplete Motown Singles 12A – 1972 (limited edition 5CD set – with bonus 45) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1972. Used 5 CDs & 45 ... $64.99
The sprawling soul sounds of Motown, circa '72 – with all the amazing singles from January to July of that huge and historic year – collected here in the first of a 2 box set grand finale for the Complete Motown Singles series! Creatively, the first half of '72 was an incredible period. Veterans like Stevie Wonder, The Temptations and The Four Tops sound freshly inspired, Marvin Gaye is hitting his peak, Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 are in full stride, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and The Supremes are still cutting gorgeous singles. In other words, there's still a whole lot of distinctively Motown magic happening! But '72 also finds the label branching out into funk, funk rock and both sunnier and grittier material by a variety artists – from Undisputed Truth and Sisters Love, to Frankie Valli and Rare Earth. The label would soon make the move to the west coast, so it's truly the end of an era – therefore as apt of a point as possible for Hip-O Select to begin closing up their beautiful series. Vol 12A has 113 tracks on 5CDs – encased in a hardcover, 130-page full color book with essays and notes on each track – including songs by all the above, plus Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, David Ruffin, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, The Commodores, Syreeta, Edwin Starr, Thelma Houston, The Devastating Affair, Bobby Darin, Blinky, Posse, The Marvelettes, Blue Scepter, GC Cameron, The Originals, Eddie Kendricks, Gladys Knght & The Pips and more! Also includes a bonus 45 by The Blackberries – "Somebody Up There" backed by "But I Love You More" – with the Mowest logo on the inner label! Love this! Can't wait for Vol 12B! CD

Motown/Hip-O Select, 1971. Used 5 CDs ... $59.99
Massive Motown from 1971 – the ultra-hip second part of this key year for the monumental label! Motown was going through plenty of changes in 1971 – a year that saw Marvin Gaye's new righteous musical vision, a wave of fresh talent from the west coast, and the label's further push into sounds that went way beyond standard soul music – moves that are summed up beautifully here by artists who include Rare Earth, Popcorn Wylie, Stevie Wonder, Undisputed Truth, The Supremes, PJ, Jackson 5, Bobby Taylor, The Rustix, Jr Walker, Martha Reeves, Virgil Henry, Tom Clay, Diana Ross, Suzee Ikeda, Sunday Funnies, Chuck Jackson, My Friends, Valerie Simpson, Jack Hammer, The Messengers, Lodi, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and even Bobby Darin! Ace/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The reach of Miles Davis is plenty wide – as right from the start, the trumpeter was associating himself with some of the hippest young talent on the scene! Yet the apex of those associations may have come in the late 60s and early 70s, when the newly-electric Miles was experimenting in all sorts of new rhythms and instrumental combinations – and inviting a whole host of soon-to-be-legends to help him with his projects! This set is a great overview of some of those key contemporaries – and the way that they took new directions of their own, when away from Miles – some very much in the spirit of the Bitches Brew generation, others opening up in whole new frontiers of soul and spirit. The set features some really well-chosen tracks – a key who's who to this generation – and titles include "Sweet Pea" by Wayne Shorter, "In A Silent Way" by Joe Zawinul, "Common Mama" by Keith Jarrett, "Song Of The Wind (alt)" by Chick Corea, "In Search Of Truth" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Arjen's Bag" by John McLaughlin, "Politician Man" by Betty Davis, "Uhuru Sasa" by Gary Bartz, "You'll Know When You Get There" by Herbie Hancock, and "Directions (16 December 1970 – first set)" by Miles Davis himself. VariousLet It Be – Black America Sings Lennon, McCartney, & Harrison ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Think The Beatles only had an impact on rock and pop fans in the America of the 60s? Think again – because their music had an undeniable impact on soul as well – as you'll here from this wonderful range of remakes of classic cuts from the Fab Four! The work here is a real surprise if you don't know the legacy – but it also really makes sense once you're reminded of the mind-expanding, ear-opening territory the group hit in the latter half of the 60s – and working with themes of social change, alienation, and personal longing – of the sort that turn out to be perfect for new interpretations in soul! Most of these cuts are way more than standard cover versions, too – as the arrangements are really inventive, and take off in bold new directions that make the songs very much new properties overall. Most of the work here is from the late 60s and early 70s – and as always with Ace Records, the notes and presentation really put the music in context! Titles include "The Fool On The Hill" by The Four Tops, "Dear Prudence" by The Five Stairsteps, "For No One" by Maceo & The King's Men, "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Tomorrow Never Knows" by Junior Parker, "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Do You Want To Know A Secret" by Mary Wells, "Lovely Rita" by Fats Domino, "With A Little Help From My Friends" by The Undisputed Truth, "Savoy Truffle" by Ella Fitzgerald, and "Let It Be" by Bill Withers. ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyDorothy's Harp (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cadet/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Other titles include Brazilian numbers "Reza" and "Canto De Ossanha" – both of which are transformed in Dorothy's hands – plus "This Girl's In Love", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Windmills of Your Mind"! Now Again, Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lonehill/ESP (Spain), 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The complete recordings from Albert Ayler's 1966 ESP set at Slugs Nightclub – located in his home turf of the East Village, a very fervent setting for avant jazz at the time! The material has a feel that's a lot like Ayler's studio recordings for ESP, but the tracks are longer overall, and feature a bit more interplay between the group members at times – individual solo space that's occasionally a bit more pronounced, running back into some tighter energies from the rest of the group. Ayler's blowing with a lineup that includes his brother Donald Ayler on trumpet, Lewis Worrell on bass, Michel Sampson on violin, and a very young Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums and percussion – and titles include "Truth Is Marching On", "Bells", "Ghosts", and "Our Prayer". ✨✧ D'AngeloVoodoo ... CD
Virgin, 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet and gritty soul from D'Angelo – who takes a huge step into deeper territory on Voodoo – and it's one of the most monumental records of its time! On one level, Voodoo works as a nicely stripped-down session with a very classic soul feel. Gone are the overzealous flourishes that sometimes overwhelmed his earlier songs, and in their place are some sweetly crafted vocal parts with a classic Marvin Gaye/Al Green feel. That warmth is probably what made Voodoo a massive popular success – but what makes it such a creative triumph are the darker undercurrents – hinting at a troubled soul struggling for spiritual truth. One of the rare cases in popular music when great art became music for the masses! Titles include "Left & Right (feat Method Man & Redman)", "The Line", "Spanish Joint", "Africa", "Feel Like Makin Love", "The Root", "Playa Playa", "Devil's Pie", and "Greatdayndamornin/Booty". CD
