WildflowerBetter Times (with download) ... LP
Ill Considered/Tropic Of Love (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
Tremendous work from this hip British trio – the mighty Idris Rahman on tenor, Leon Brichard on bass, and Tom Skinner on drums – really providing a great update of the saxophone trio mode that Sonny Rollins first pioneered back in the 50s! The vibe here is very different – maybe rhythm first, with a mix of shifting patterns between the bass and drums, which are then colored by Rahman in very different ways too – sometimes pulsating and snakey, other times much looser overall – especially at moments when the bass is equally open too. These guys come from the Ill Considered camp in London, and their music is a great second chapter to that group's excellent work – as you'll hear here on titles that include "Blue", "Yellow", "Green", and "Red". Nu TropicVoce Sabe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Comet/Rambling (Japan), 2005. Used ... $4.99
The first full length set from a group we love for their earlier singles on Comet Records – and who step out here with a well-crafted approach to dancefloor Brazilian! Nutropic have a soulful sensibility that goes way beyond simple bossa remix tricks – a style that balances Brazilian rhythms with some warmer soul-based touches – almost in the mode of the first few singles by Mr Hermano, but often with a gentler groove and a nice use of jazz from time to time. Vocals are especially strong – sung by Fernanda Porto, Anna Torres, and Allen Hoist – and lots of the tracks have excellent keyboards that really round out the sound. Titles include "Leva E Traz", "Suave", "Galeao 70", "Sambador", "Voce Sabe", "Eastern Soul", "Saudade De Um Grande Amor", "Papa Songo", and "Pascalito's Theme" – and the CD also feature some bonus remixes! VariousAndy Votel Presents Brazilika – Non Stop Subtropical Psychedelia From The Vaults Of Brazil's Som Livre & RGE ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2008. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The hippest installment so far in the Brazilika series – a mad mix of musical styles from Finders Keepers mainman Andy Votel – all in a freaky, funky, fuzzy blend of sounds! The tracks here are much grittier than the work we're used to hearing from the Far Out label – as Votel's dug through the 60s and 70s vaults of RGE/Som Livre Records to come up with rare Brazilian rock, funk, and other heavy styles from back in the day! As with Votel's reissues on Finders Keepers, there's a sound here that's informed by beathead record collecting – a love of older grooves directed by current musical developments – all with a definite ear for the wilder side of the sound spectrum. Most tracks have a pretty heavy groove – and the styles run from psychedelic rock through Tropicalia-inspired tunes, to post-bossa, Bahian sounds, and more. Titles include "Funga Funga" by Trio Soneca, "Careta" by Betinho, "Modulo Lunar" by Os Brazoes, "Terra Livre" by Abilio Manoel, "Os Bichos" by Trio Soneca, "De Vera" by Novos Baianos, "Ciladas" by Pery Ribeiro, "Se Voce Pensa" by Moraes Moreira, "Flores Belas" by Tim Maia, "1974" by Gerson Conrad & Zeze Motta, "Gamboa" by Brazilian Octopus, "Deixe Entrar Um Pouco D'Agua No Quintal" by Os Mutantes, "Periscopio" by Azimuth, and "Gotham City" by Os Brazoes. Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little package, and way more than just the familiar exotica moments on mainstream compilations – as your guides here are Lux Interior and Poison Ivy of The Cramps – two folks who know more than plenty about the music of the farther reaches of the postwar years! And although their other collections for this label have gone way out to pull in some totally obscure material, the blend here is more measured – so that you'll get great cuts by some of the bigger exotica names, mixed with other numbers that are more unusual – and some that we wouldn't have even thought to include in such a package – all awash in sounds from the islands, tropical percussion, and even a few birdcalls and chants along the way! The 2CD set features a great range of material – and titles include "The Twisters" by Mel Henke, "Hampi" by Yma Sumac, "Mystery Of Love" by Olatunji, "Jardin De La Noche" by Robert Drasnin, "Mood For You" by Phil Moore, "Alegres Conga" by Cal Tlader, Envy" by Bill Russo, "Kele Kele" by Johnny Richards, "African Bossa Nova" by Ahmed Abdul Malik, "Tabu" by Augie Colon, "Pua Carnaeon" by Arthur Lyman, "Adventures In Paradise" by Leo Addeo, "Dance Of The Nustas" by Elisabeth Waldo, "Pagan Love Song" by Alex Stordal, "Balikpapan" by Jimmy Namaro Trio, and "Train To Ranchipur" by Markko Polo Adventurers. ✨✧ DJ CamTropical Gypsy (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Diggers Factory (France), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet little set from DJ Cam – not nearly as tropical as you might guess from the title, although there are a few lighter moments that almost have the famous beatmaker borrowing a bit from Brazil! The core energy, though, is in a mix of jazzy keyboards, gentle rhythms, and the kinds of samples that first set Cam apart from the rest back in the 90s – almost used unabashedly a few times here, in ways that really take us back to the old days – although the live instrumentation is a lot more than Cam would have given us back then too. Alex Tassel plays a few trumpet solos on the record – and titles include "Joao", "Paradise Garage", "Late Night Love", "Jealousy", "A Castle In Spain", "We Live In Tulum", and "Tropical Gypsy". Decca/Captain High (Germany), 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful album from the height of the exotica years – but a set that's got a fair bit more jazz in the mix than most from that generation too! Gene Rains plays vibes – and moves between moodier moments, ala Martin Denny/Arthur Lyman, and more straightforward jazz styles – which often have some great modal elements in the mix! The Rains group played hotels in Hawaii during the late 50s and early 60s – but are maybe more like a Pacific take on territory of the Quartette Tres Bien, thanks to strong work from Allen Watanabe on drums, Archie Grant on bass, and Byron Peterson on piano. Titles include "Mapuana", "Bancock Cock Fight", "Tiki", "Off Shore", "Shadow Of Love", "Jasmine & Jade", and "Lonely Winter". CD

Big Crown, 2016. New Copy ... $12.99 17.98
A fantastic full length set from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – a group who've really won us over in recent years with a fast flurry of funky 45s! The group take an older steel band sound, and forge it to a might tighter rhythmic impulse – with a sound that's often even funkier than the best (and few) funky steel band tracks from the 70s – served up with razor-sharp instrumentation, and great production in a Daptone/Soul Fire mode – which really keeps things sounding raw all the way through! The group's got strong ties to the Mighty Mocambos – and some other contemporary funk acts too – and the music is top-shelf all the way through, a funkier full steel band record than you'll ever hope to find. Titles include "Beetham Highway Ride", "Scorpio", "Pimp", "Tropical Heat", "Laventille Road March", "Round & Round", "Port Of Spain Hustle", "Jungle Fever", "Love Like This", and "Dog Was A Doughnut". PMG (Austria), 1980. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Sweet funky sounds from east Nigeria, circa 1980 – a great little set that's got a laidback groove, and a style that's clearly learned plenty from the hipper corners of the American funk universe! The approach is a bit like funky club at times, a bit more like some of the larger funk acts of the time at others – all handled with a groove that's every bit as badass as you might guess from the cover! The music has a few more tropical touches at times, almost Caribbean energy when the rhythms speed up – but some of the best tracks are right on the money, with a superdope vibe. Titles include "World Of Misery", "Take Me High", "Funk In A Ghetto", "Disco Bomp", and "World Of Love". CD

Bob James & Earl KlughOne On One ... CD
Tappan Zee/CBS, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A mellow mainstream fusion classic from the 70s – one that paired the gentle guitar of Earl Klugh with the sweet keyboards of Bob James – in a set that's filled with plenty of warm and laidback touches! The mode here takes off some of the darker edges from James' earlier sound, and softens it nicely with Klugh's colorful approach to the guitar – a slightly tropical mode at times, and one that dances breezily along with help from Ralph MacDonald, Ron Carter, Harvey Mason, and Gary King. Titles include the lovely "Mallorca", plus "I'll Never See You Smile Again", "Kari", "The Afterglow", "Love Lips", and "Winding River". CD

Rita LeeBuild Up – Serie Estreia ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99 19.98 About September 15, 2021 (delayed)
The first solo album by Rita Lee – cut back when she was a member of the groundbreaking Tropicalia trio, Os Mutantes! The album's got a very different feel than her work with that group – and has Rita stepping out as a sophisticated pop singer, almost in the way that Nico did on the Chelsea Girl album, after leaving the Velvet Underground. Arrangements have a weird twisted edge – as Rita makes her way through a set of originals and a few covers, in an almost deadpan, ice-blond mode that reminds us of some of Jane Birkin's early work. Arrangements are by the great Rogerio Duprat, and titles include "Sucesso, Aqui Vou Eu", "Prisioneira Do Amor", "Hulla Hulla", "Tempo Nublado", "Precisamos De Irmaos", and "Calma" – plus a nice cover of "And I Love Her". A&M, 1960s/1970s. Used ... $6.99
Was there ever anyone groovier than these guys? We don't think so – as Sergio had it all: 2 female singers in the lead, great bossa nova backing, and production on his records that couched the grooves in the pillowy-soft pop style of the A&M studios! This 17 track package isn't much on looks – but it does feature a great retrospective of Sergio's work – mostly 60s numbers, with a few of the best 70s and 80s numbers thrown in for good measure. Titles include "Pais Tropical", "So Many Stars", "Pretty World", "Bim Bom", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Alibis", "Song Of No Regrets", "Mas Que Nada", "Scarborough Fair", "Look Around", "Like A Lover", "One Note Samba/Spanish Flea", "Going Out Of My Head", and "Look Of Love". The album's a double-length set, split into live and studio songs – all produced by Arto Lindsay and Monte, with a great blend of styles that keeps all the tracks super-fresh. The record features a version of the Tropicalia "Panis et Circensis", plus "Bem Leve", "Cerebro Eletronico", "Chuva No Brejo", "Blanco", "Ainda Lembro", and "Give Me Love". Nice packaging, too! CD

ESL/Wonderwheel, 2006. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
The groove here is a compelling blend of Puerto Rican, African, and New York styles – bits of salsa, funk, hip hop, and more – all percolating together in the hands of Nickodemus and coming out in a whole new way! The sound is a lot less cliched than you might expect – and certainly nothing like mainstream crossovers of this nature – and the album's re-release is noteworthy, given all the attention Nickodemus has been getting of late. Guests include Ticklah, Quantic, Apani B, Malena Perez, and others – and titles include "Mi Swing Es Tropical", "Cleopatra In New York", "Give The Drummer Some", "The Spirits Within", "Back From Africa", "Bailamos En El Junque", "Mystery Of Life", and "Peace Pipe". ✨✧ Sergio MendesSwinger From Rio – Sergio Mendes Favorites ... CD
Wrasse (UK), 1960s/Mid 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Groovy groovy stuff – and a sweet little collection of Sergio's greatest work with his groups Brasil 66 and Brasil 88! The format of the ensemble was an instant hit – with 2 female voices harmonizing in the lead, bossa rhythms bubbling under the bottom, and plenty of sweet jazzy work on the keyboards from Sergio himself. The set brings together 24 tracks in all – mostly from the group's glory days at the end of the 60s, plus a few more overlooked gems from their mid 80s return to traditional bossa rhythms. The whole thing works wonderfully as a groovy bossa party from the very first note – and delightfully trips its way through tunes that include "Wave", "Pais Tropical", "Chove Chuva", "Mas Que Nada", "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Like A Lover", "The Frog", "Bim Bom", "Trilhos Urbanos", "Puzzle Of Hearts", and "Pretty World". La Casa Tropical (Netherlands), 1992. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
PVP are a trio of South African singers who really update their groove with this sweet set of tracks from the early 90s – music that still comes across with some of the charm of 80s soul music from South Africa, but which also shows a stronger house music influence in the rhythms – which makes for some great sound all the way through! Most of the numbers have nicely kicking beats and wonderfully moody keys – which sound great in contrast to the warmer voices of the trio, as they rise up with a nicely righteous, very soulful spirit – a new sense of optimism that really matches the new spirit of their nation at the time. Titles include "Malende", "Singapore", "Si Ya Jola", "Tshilidzi", "Somebody To Love", "Go Down", and "Uli Bambe Lingashoni". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LemuriaLemuria (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of funk from Hawaii – and a legendary bit of free soul that's been winning global fame for decades! Lemuria is the brainchild of Kirk Thompson – who plays piano, bass, keyboards, and vibes on this very spiritual set of tracks. Master Henry Gibson was one of the executive producers, and he also plays conga on the set – which recalls some of the more spiritual collective funky projects from the early 70s Chicago scene, given a bit of a tropical twist. Many tracks feature vocals by "The Ladies Of Lemuria" – a lovely trio that's got a bit of an Emotions sort of sound – but the jazziness of the tracks is a lot freer than the backings the Emotions ever got, with more of a west coast Fantasy Records kind of approach, touched with some Stevie Wonder-like warmth. Really great all the way through – and impeccably put together, despite the indie origins of the record. Titles include "Get That Happy Feeling", "Hunk Of Heaven", "Dreams", "Mister U", "The Making Of You", and "Mystery Love". CD

Whatmusic (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mad batch of tunes that are a perfect example of the "pilantragem" (piracy) movement in Brazil at the end of the 60s! Similar to some of the pluralistic cultural influences running through Tropicalia, pilantragem borrows music from a world of different sources – working in a style that offers a pastiche of many different strands, many ideas, all filtered into one groovy sound! The core of the group on this set is a jazz one – with players that include Paulo Moura on saxes, Pascoal Meirelles on drums, and Wagner Tiso on piano – but the bouncing groove of the set is way more than jazz, and is in the best tradition of the mad Brazilian mix-up music we love so much. Gal CostaEstratosferica ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2015. Used ... $9.99
Gal Costa looks surpisingly youthful on the cover – and she's also sounding more youthful in her music than we've heard in many years – thanks to a key collaboration with Kassin and Moreno Veloso! Both of the younger musicians really find a fresh space for Gal to work with – a nice shift away from some of the more staid, mature modes of her other recent records – and a style that brings out all the creativity that made us fall in love with Costa so many years ago! This shift isn't a return to Tropicalia, but instead a move towards that playful, genre-stepping territory that you'll find in both Veloso and Kassin's music, especially the latter. One of Costa's best in years – and with titles that include "Amor Se Aclame", "Anuviar", "Espelho D'Agua", "Ecstasy", "Jabitaca", and "Sem Medo Nem Esperanca". CD

A gem of a record from trumpeter Matthew Halsall – one of our favorite jazz musicians of the past 20 years, and an artist who just seems to be growing and growing with each new release! This set picks up on the organic, meditative quality of some of Halsall's recent records – but it also has a bit more bite, and is maybe almost a return to the roots of his earliest records on the Gondwana label – those classics that first made us fall in love with his music over a decade ago, and which made Matthew a real front-runner of the current global spiritual jazz underground! The set's got this very rich presentation – as the leader's work on trumpet is mixed with harp from Maddie Herbert, flute and tenor from Matt Cliffe, piano and kalimba from Livin Gheorghe, and great use of percussion, bass, and drums – all on long tracks that build with the best sort of post-Coltrane energy – titles that include "Joyful Spirits Of The Universe", "Mindfulness Meditations", "Tropical Landscapes", "Harmony With Nature", and "The Energy Of Life". Maybe that past/present quality is no surprise, though, when you consider that the record's a collaboration with Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart – a man who's given us so much great music over the years, often in ways that move between decades and global scenes – borrowing just the right bits, and making something really new and fresh in the process! A stunning tribute to the music of Jorge Ben – a host of classic covers from the 60s and 70s, all of which share Jorge's love for an upbeat, soulful groove! The set's exploding with life and energy – that new sort of groove that Ben first unleashed on Brazilian music in the 60s, which was quickly taken up by most of his contemporaries – as you'll hear on the wonderful tunes in this set! There's a ridiculous amount of music on the collection – over two dozen tunes, a number of which we'd never heard before – and although Jorge doesn't sing on any of them, the vocalists are all clearly inspired by his sense of warmth and soul. Mariana Aydar's really blowing our mind since the last time we heard her on record – stepping forth here with her deepest, most complex material ever – an album as rich in sounds and styles as some of our favorite Brazilian material from the 70s! There's this confidence to the presentation that's completely genre-transcendent – that feel of making new musical space we loved in the Tropicalia era, and the MPB generation of the 70s – a mode that few other Brazilian singers, especially female ones, can match this well these days. The record speaks volumes on its own – so much so that we'd be daft to try to pin it down with just a few words – but we can definitely say that once you hang on for the ride, Mariana got plenty of places to take you through the course of the set. A really tremendous album from Celso Fonseca – a set that really takes the singer to a whole new level, and may even find him a wider global audience as well! The album begins with the sublime title cut – an original by Celso, with beautiful English lyrics – and throughout the record, songs mix English and Portuguese in this really lovely way – scored to these jazzy backings that are augmented by just the right, light use of strings – which almost gives the whole thing the feel of some sophisticated late 60s jazz vocal album, although one that's still got plenty of Brazilian touches, too! Acoustic guitar underscores some bossa elements in the music, but the set's hardly just a bossa record at all – and instead, really feels like Fonseca making a bid to become one of the best male jazz singers on the planet, which he might well do with a record like this. The third album from the legendary Os Mutantes – part of the essential trio of sides released during the Tropicalia years! The record's got a sound that's tighter and a bit more straightforward than their previous efforts – stricter song formats, and styles that lean heavily on rockish guitars and organ. But as the odd cover images on the front and back will attest, the band is still in a very creatively arty mode here – still working strongly with arranger Rogerio Duprat, in a wash of sounds and moods that fold contemporary music back upon itself with plenty of odd twists, turns, and surprises!
