Trio 3 (Oliver Lake/Reggie Workman/Andrew Cyrille)Visiting Texture ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
We really love the Trio 3 – as it seems to allow each of the individual members just the right sort of personal space to open up and unfold – reminding us again what important contributions they've made to jazz over the decades! Saxophonist Oliver Lake is especially strong – open, flowing, and free – but always with an inherent sense of swing and soul, even when the drumwork of Andrew Cyrille hits those beautifully loose modes that he does so well. Reggie Workman's bass is recorded with fantastic tone, and really grounds the whole proceedings – and the whole thing's a fantastic balance between freedom, spirit, and soul. Titles include "Bumper", "Bonu", "A Girl Named Rainbow", "Visiting Texture", "7 For Max", and "Epic Man". CD

✨✧ Trio 3 (Oliver Lake/Reggie Workman/Andrew Cyrille)Wha's Nine ... CD
Marge (France), 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great trio, and a really great live performance – one that's right up there with work you'd expect from the players involved a few decades before – showing all of them to still be very much at the height of their creative powers! Oliver Lake's alto sax is especially great here – blowing with a bold force and sharp edge that bursts out strongly from the start, almost taking us back to loft jazz years in the open, spontaneous setting of this performance. Reggie Workman's bass gives us plenty to love too – painting a variety of tones throughout the set – strong one minute, soft the next, and both plucked and bowed. Cyrille's drums round things up with the right degree of sensitivity for the other two musicians – and titles include "Wha's Nine", "Hasan", "Striation", "Willow Song", "ZC", "Come On Home Baby", and "Gazzelloni".
