Hanif Abdurraqib gave us a great book on Tribe Called Quest a few years back – and here, he turns his fantastic prose to a range of other artists, singers, and musicians – all presented with a fantastic balance of personal reflection mixed with a deep understanding of their work! The subjects range from Aretha Franklin to Don Shirley, Josephine Baker, Whitney Houston, Wu-Tang, and many others – presented by Abdurraqib in ways that are really different than usual, and often cast in the larger setting of the black experience in America – echoing some of Hanif's other writings too. Abdurraqib is easily one of the most compelling essayists on music and culture to emerge in the past few decades – and this well-done volume runs for 300 pages in length in this hardcover edition. An amazing album that has Art Blakey completely reinventing himself for the 70s! Blakey shifts from straight hardbop to kind of a modal soul jazz groove, touched with some of the electric playing of the younger jazz generation, but not enough to qualify as fusion or funk. Instead, he's working with some great younger players – like Carter Jefferson, Woody Shaw, and Michael Howell – hitting a groove that reminds us of some of the best underground soul jazz on labels like Muse or Strata East. Includes the amazing long groovers "Mission Eternal" and "Chant For Bu", a famous Tribe Called Quest sample – plus new electric piano versions of "Moanin" and "Along Came Betty", both of which feature vocals by Jon Hendricks. The standout LP from The Dream Warriors – a quirky hip hop group who first sprung onto the scene in the wake of De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest. The duo were Canadian, and had a style that was a bit more open-ended than others – with room for odd samples and a keen sense of humor. Both of these are displayed well in the album's classic track "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style" – a pretty great number that sampled heavily from Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova", many years before the track became better known as the theme from Austin Powers. Other tracks include "Follow Me Not", "Ludi", "Tune From the Missing Channel", and "Wash Your Face in My Sink". " CD

Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's record collection from the time, it's still got a freshness that we always forget about – and lots of nice twists and turns that show that the band hadn't lost their more sophisticated roots. Case in point is the wonderful "Brazilian Rhyme", a short little groover that you'll instantly recognize as a sample from the first Tribe Called Quest album. Other tracks include "Jupiter", "In The Marketplace", "Magic Mind", "Runnin", "Be Ever Wonderful", and "Serpentine Fire". Plus, the CD features bonus tracks "Would You Mind?", "Runnin (original Hollywood mix)", and "Brazilian Rhyme (live)". CD

A really fantastic album from guitarist Grant Green – a set that's every bit as great as his other Blue Note funk albums from the time – but in a very different way! First off, the group has vibes – played by the more obscure Willie Bivens, sometimes with this hard chromatic sound that's really wonderful – especially when combined by the organ work on the set by Ronnie Foster and Neal Creque – both very cool players with an unusual conception – which sends the whole thing off in very hip territory! The mighty Idris Muhammad plays drums – ensuring a very tight bottom – and the group also features Claude Bartee on tenor, who has a strong, soulful vibe. The set includes a fantastic live version of "Down Here On the Ground" – famously sampled by Tribe Called Quest – and other highlights include heavy funk takes on "Let The Music Take Your Mind" and "Sookie Sookie", and the Creque original "Time To Remember". This remastered version includes 3 bonus tracks – "Hey Western Union Man," It's Your Thing" and "Maiden Voyage" – all great! CD

An overlooked gem from the hipper side of the hip hop spectrum in the 90s – a record that's very much cut from the same cloth as the best work by Tribe Called Quest – and which has a similar balance of no-nonsense beats and jazzy elements! That quality is maybe best summed up in the track "What Is It Jazz Or Hip Hop" – a tune that might well stand for the whole album's title too – as Innersoul picks up from that Low End Theory style in a really great way, while spinning some mighty deft rhymes that set his own pace as well. Slum Village manages to bring quality material with each release, against pretty incredible odds, given the tragic loss of key members over the years – and Elzhi & T3 do it again with Villa Manifesto! Danny Krivit re-edits of couple of our favorite Earth Wind & Fire tracks ever! The album version of the tune has a vocal part that was sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest – and this edit hones even even more strongly on that aspect and unlocks the full jazzy power of the track – with a super funky bassline and a soaring power that's wonderful!
