The second album from the immortal Tribe Called Quest – one of the absolute essential hip hop LPs, and a record that should be an anyone's shortlist of the best albums in several subsections of hip hop – just a straight up masterpiece anyway you cut it. ✨✧ Tribe Called QuestPeople's Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm ... LP
Jive, 1989. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.98
One of THE landmark hip hop albums – and the full length debut of great Tribe Called Quest! We hardly need to tell you about this classic – but it will always bear repeating. De La Soul might have kicked the door open on leftfield, anything goes artistry about a year or so earlier, but their friends and fellow Native Tongues Tribe's debut was a crucial reminder that the east coast was spinning out of one of the greatest creative growth spurts in hip hop history at the time. Pure excellence. Tracks include "Luck Of Lucien", "Footprints", "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo", "Bonita Applebaum", "Can I Kick It?", "Rhythm (Devoted To The Art Of Moving Butts)", "Mr Muhammad", "Description Of A Fool" andmore seminal, jazzy middle school tracks! Tribe Called QuestWe Got It From Here – Thank You 4 Your Service (with download) ... LP
Jive, 2016. New Copy 2LP ... $30.99 31.98
A hell of a comeback for Tribe Called Quest – maybe one of the best musical comebacks ever, and a fantastic reminder of why we loved the group so much in the first place! 18 years have passed since we last heard from the trio (now, sadly, a duo) – and that time only seems to have sharpened their sound, and given them a more powerful presence than ever! Everything we loved about them is still very firmly in place – that sense of collaboration, almost improvisation in a jazz-like way, and those moments of surprise and wonder at all the deft turns they can take in a short space. Yet there's also a new edge – one that might be even more powerful in this highly politicized moment in American history – a bite that the group never had before, and a larger social agenda that makes all of their incredible skills even more amazing, when focused on a target. We've certainly missed them – but the album's also well worth the wait! Titles include "Black Spasmodic", "The Donald", "The Space Program", "We The People", "Solid Wall Of Sound", "Dis Generation", "Kids", "Melatonin", "Enough", "Movin Backwards", and "The Killing Season". A masterpiece from prime era Tribe Called Quest! Midnight Maurauders was Tribe's third LP, and even though there were no tracks yet credited to the Ummah, this is pretty much the beginning of Tribe's transition to that sound – with the same mellow, laid back vibe as their best early material, but less of an overtly jazzy reference in their sound. Phife and Tip are still on point lyrically, and honestly, this is pretty much the last LP that Tribe dropped that's got nearly all hits and no misses on it. A beautiful tribute to A Tribe Called Quest – in case you can't tell from the title – served up through a variety of instrumental musings by Medline that almost feel as if they were scraps from the production room of Q-Tip back in the day! The music is awash in jazzy elements, and often has some nice distortion to provide a bit of electric relaxation – all with a laidback pace that's really wonderful, and which really keeps a flow throughout this instrumental set. ✨✧ Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBuhaina ... LP
Prestige (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
An amazing album that has Art Blakey completely reinventing himself for the 70s! Blakey shifts from straight hardbop to kind of a modal soul jazz groove, touched with some of the electric playing of the younger jazz generation, but not enough to qualify as fusion or funk. Instead, he's working with some great younger players – like Carter Jefferson, Woody Shaw, and Michael Howell – hitting a groove that reminds us of some of the best underground soul jazz on labels like Muse or Strata East. Includes the amazing long groovers "Mission Eternal" and "Chant For Bu", a famous Tribe Called Quest sample – plus new electric piano versions of "Moanin" and "Along Came Betty", both of which feature vocals by Jon Hendricks. Bottom Rhythm JamPrimitive ... CD
Basis (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $26.99
It's been a number of years since we last heard from Bottom Rhythm Jam – but man, these guys have definitely kept things together – and maybe even seem more "bottom rhythm" than ever before! The lineup features drums from Takehiro Shimizu of Indigo Jam Unit – mixed with superb acoustic basslines from Tomokazu Sugimoto, whose work on his instrument is fantastic – every bit as powerful as the drums, and with this round, warm, completely soulful quality – an acoustic bass mode that maybe lives on in the legacy of Low End Theory by Tribe Called Quest! The group also features two more percussionists – on djembe, congas, shekere, caxixi, and clave – all used to further underscore the rhythm-heavy riot of sound – on titles that include "Tunis", "Buzzing", "Discover", "Tribe", "Align", "Chase", and "Pulse". One of the hippest French albums we've heard in years – a laidback blend of hip hop and jazz that really lives up to the cover's homage to the legendary Black Jazz label! The Jazz Liberatorz have a great way with a groove – a style that's openly flowing and instrumentally jazzy – a bit like the vibe we first came to love in Tribe Called Quest, but almost even better given that much of the instrumentation is played live! Most tracks have warm keyboards rolling along with the beats – and the rhythms are often gently acoustic in nature, with a depth of soul that sets these guys apart from most of their contemporaries. Guests on the record include J Sands, Lizz Fields, Sadat X, Apani B Fly, Fat Lip, and T Love – and titles include "Indonesia", "The Process", "Genius At Work", "I Am Hip Hop", "Ease My Mind", "Clin D'Oeil", "The Return", and "Speak The Language". Soulful UK hip hop from Jungle Brown! The core trio of Ric Flo, MAEAR & Tony Bones comes Full Circle with a sound that leans on a classic jazzy soul inspired hip hop mode, on one hand putting a contemporary spin on a vibe that recalls legends like Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers and De La Soul, but with the live instrumentation and some club soul and housey touches in the production, too, it feels fresh and distinctive, and like they're ultimately following their own hip hop soul muse. Nice & SmoothNice & Smooth ... CD
Fresh/Get On Down, 1989. Used ... $6.99
One of our favorite hop hop records from the end of the 80s – a set that sprang onto the scene out of nowhere and instantly won us over! They're not exactly the same, but we'd like to think of Nice & Smooth in the same space as De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest – because, like those more famous acts, they came up with a whole new groove that really broke some of the stiffer rhythmic patterns of the time – and also (maybe more importantly) had a great sense of humor and perspective on themselves, but not in the more gimmicky way of the too-comedic rappers from a few years before. There's a really special balance here – grooviness and greatness, street smarts and humor – all served up with fantastic production from Great Nice and Smooth Bee – who do a great job of pulling together fresh source tracks for the songs. Titles include "Early To Rise", "Funky For You", "We Are No 1", "Ooh Child", "More & More Hits", "Hit Me", "Sum Pimped Out Sh*t", "Nice & Smooth", "Dope On A Rope", "Gold", and "Dope Not Hype". CD

Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.99
A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. A fantastic 20th anniversary celebration of Burnt Sugar – one of the most righteous, forward-thinking ensembles of the past few decades – some of the first proponents of a 21st Century sound that now seems to be flowing from many other corners! Yet these guys are still unlike anyone else we can think of – maybe a jazz ensemble at the core, but one that's keenly aware of soul, funk, and hip hop – and not afraid to allow any of those elements equal play in their music – almost as if Duke Ellington grew up in the 90s, listening to electric Miles Davis, Tribe Called Quest, and Curtis Mayfield – then found a way to expand larger musical ideas based on influences that diverse. A really fantastic album from guitarist Grant Green – a set that's every bit as great as his other Blue Note funk albums from the time – but in a very different way! First off, the group has vibes – played by the more obscure Willie Bivens, sometimes with this hard chromatic sound that's really wonderful – especially when combined by the organ work on the set by Ronnie Foster and Neal Creque – both very cool players with an unusual conception – which sends the whole thing off in very hip territory! The mighty Idris Muhammad plays drums – ensuring a very tight bottom – and the group also features Claude Bartee on tenor, who has a strong, soulful vibe. Case in point is the wonderful "Brazilian Rhyme", a short little groover that you'll instantly recognize as a sample from the first Tribe Called Quest album. Other tracks include "Jupiter", "In The Marketplace", "Magic Mind", "Runnin", "Be Ever Wonderful", and "Serpentine Fire". Plus, the CD features bonus tracks "Would You Mind?", "Runnin (original Hollywood mix)", and "Brazilian Rhyme (live)". CD

✨✧ Eugene McDanielsHeadless Heroes Of The Apocalypse (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A monster album that's gone onto influence a generation – but which was barely recognized at the time! Singer Eugene McDaniels had scored big with some pop hits in the 60s under the name Gene McDaniels – but here, he steps out in a righteous batch of offbeat funk tunes – filled with politics, offbeat rhythms, and some very weird instrumentation. The whole thing's awash in moody, jazzy changes – of the style that showed up often in samples by Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, and other artists who drew keen inspiration from this record. Titles include the massive "Jagger the Dagger" – plus "The Lord Is Back", "Lovin Man", "Headless Heroes", "Freedom Death Dance", and "Supermarket Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Burnt Sugar ArkestraTwentieth Anniversary Mixtapes – Groiddest Shizznits Vol 1 ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Greg Tate founded the group, and directs with bassist Jared Michael Nickerson – and this series of three CDs is dedicated to bringing back some of the group's best work, much of which has gone out of print in recent years. Guests on this first album include Matana Roberts and Capt Kirk Douglas – and titles include "Mazzafrique", "If There's A Hell Below", "Sandpiper", "Kirk Bit My Hand", "Crazy In The Dark", "The Crepescularium", "Wretched Of The Earth Page 88", and "4.29.92". ✨✧ Reuben WilsonSweet Life ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great groover by Reuben Wilson – and one of his best albums ever! The funky organist really takes off from the sound of his earlier Blue Note albums here – hitting a vibe that's sharper, darker, and plenty darn righteous – still small combo jazz funk, but with a depth that we wouldn't have expected a few years before! The group's a great one – with Ramon Morris laying down some great lines on tenor sax, plus Bill Hardman on trumpet, Lloyd Davis on guitar, Mickey Bass on bass, and Thomas Derrick on tightly funky drums. The album features Reuben's amazing cover of "Inner City Blues" – which has a great jagged groove that was sampled years back by Tribe Called Quest – and it also includes the groovy cut "Creampuff", plus "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Sugar", "I'll Take You There", and "The Sweet Life". ✨✧ VariousDaisy Age ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Lou DonaldsonPretty Things ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A massive classic from Lou Donaldson's funky years with Idris Muhammad on drums – an album that's filled with lots of bottom-heavy grooves, plus some great work on alto, guitar, and organ! Muhammad's drums are in fine fine form here – right up there with his other LD Blue Note work, if not even better – and the rest of the lineup features Leon Spencer and Lonnie Smith on organ, Ted Dunbar and Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Blue Mitchell on trumpet – all top-shelf players who really make the album kick nicely. Titles include the classic cut "Pot Belly", which was sampled by Tribe Called Quest and about a hundred others – plus "Curtis Song", "Sassie Lassie", "Love", and a version of "Tennessee Waltz" that's even a nice one too! ✨✧ Bill Cosby (aka Badfoot Brown)Bill Cosby Presents Badfoot Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band ... CD
Uni/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A funky masterpiece from Bill Cosby – hardly the sort of record you might expect from all of his years on mainstream TV! This set was cut back when Bill was a much hipper cat on the LA scene – and it was the start of a brief all-instrumental run with his Badfoot Brown ensemble – a group who's not named in the notes on the record, but who offer up some seriously funky grooves! Bill supposedly plays keyboards himself – some really mad electric piano that's often repetitive, cyclical, and really hypnotic – a tripped-out style that's more funk than jazz, and which is easily one of the best parts of the record. But the rhythms are great too – equally hypnotic, and build up from bass, organ, guitar, and this whomping sort of drum part – echoing strongly in the background and really bringing a spooky feel to the set. Side one includes the amazing "Martin's Funeral" – sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest, and a 15 minute jam that's inspired by the funeral of Martin Luther King. Side two features "Hybish Shybish", an even longer track that's sort of an improvised jazz game – and which features tripped-out instrumental trading that's simply amazing. The whole record is really mindblowing – a messed-up jam session that's well worth the legend that's been built up around it over the years – and we're hard-pressed to think of another album like it! And as a special bonus, the package features these really long notes written by Bill Cosby himself – words that are as unusual as the music, and a side of him that's hardly been shown again. CD
