Bobby Bradford/Hafez Modirzadeh/Ken Filiano/Royal HartiganLive At The Magic Triangle ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
The "magic" part of the title is certainly right – as there's a really special vibe to this recent performance by cornet legend Bobby Bradford – kind of that continuing sense of creativity that's marked his music for decades, and which continues to yield surprises like this! Bradford's really opened up his sonic bag in the past decade or so – and you can definitely hear that here, in his work with tenorist Hafez Modirzadeh, an improvising partner whose sense of textural interplay really complements Bradford's horn. And the pair are set up very well with Ken Filiano on bass and Royal Hartigan on drums – players who seem to step in at all the right moments, but fall back when needed. Filiano's also credited with "effects" – and we're not sure if those are on his instrument, or all of them – although we're guessing that most of the sonic splendor here comes from the musicians. Titles include "She", "Silhouette", "Bayraktar", "Wadsworth Falls", and "Ashes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clifford JordanClifford Jordan & The Magic Triangle On Stage Vol 1 ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1975. Used ... $16.99
Excellent work from Clifford Jordan – far better than the usual Steeplechase session of the time! The vibe here is similar to Jordan's work at the time on the Strata East label – played in a very similar group, with Cedar Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – way more than just a standard rhythm section, and with Jordan in tow, a compelling quartet with a really unique sound! There's a great depth to the work here – hardly the American soloist taking up space that you might get on other European live dates from the period – and the tracks are long, with an angular soul jazz finish. Both Jordan and Walton get plenty of room for expression – and titles on this first volume include "Pinocchio", "The Highest Mountain", "That Old Devil Moon", and "The Maestro". CD

✨✧ Freddie Hubbard & Woody ShawEternal Triangle ... CD
Blue Note, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two of our favorite trumpet players of all time team up with a group of then-young lions for a late 80s session of killer material – definitely one of the best Blue Note new recordings of the time! Kenny Garrett, Mulgrew Miller, Ray Drummond and Carl Allen join Freddie and Woody for one of Woody's last dates, and the playing is filled with fire from the get go. Shaw's complex modern approach plays nicely off of Hubbard's soulful style . Six tunes: "Down Under", "The Eternal Triangle", "The Moontrane", "Calling Miss Khadija", "Nostrand & Fulton" and "Tommorrow's Destiny". CD
(Out of print. Please note the booklet has a very light stain in one corner but this is still a nice copy.)

Dizzy GillespieSonny Rollins/Sonny Stitt Sessions ... LP
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Of the classic "big names get together for a session" albums on Verve, the best ones always seem to be the ones with one of the "Sonnys" in the list of leaders. This one compiles titles from the Sonny Side Up album – which featured Stitt and Rollins, plus others from 1957 sessions in which Diz played with one or the other player. The set's a beautiful batch of long tracks with lots of blowing room, and a deep soulful hardbop groove that you don't always hear on Verve. The rhythm section for all groups is comprised of Ray Bryant, Tommy Bryant, and Charlie Persip – who are part of the reason for the magnanimous groove of the set – and titles include "After Hours", "Con Alma", "Haute Mon", "Sumphin", "Weatleigh Hall", "I Know That You Know", and "The Eternal Triangle". Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny RollinsSonny Side Up (Verve Master Edition) ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... $2.99
A great little blowing session for Verve – one that has Dizzy Gillespie working here with two different "Sonnys" – Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, both of whom play tenor on the set! The tracks here are all quite long and open – more loose vehicles for extended soloing than the usual sort of Verve tracks – almost a mini-jam session with the three horn giants in the lead. Rhythm is from the trio of Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the real stars are the horn players – not just Diz, who cuts some of his hippest lines of the late 50s here, but also Rollins and Stitt, who seem to get a bit more care in recording than they did over at Prestige earlier in the decade. Album features 4 long tracks – "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "After Hours", "I Know That You Know", and "The Eternal Triangle". CD

Burton Greene/Damon Smith/Ra Kalam Bob MosesLife's Intense Mystery ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.00
Amazing sounds from pianist Burton Greene – a modernist who's been quietly continuing a great legacy of creative music he started in the 60s – still sounding distinct and full of imagination in this well-recorded recent trio performance! The set has Greene working with Damon Smith on bass and Ra Kalam Bob Moses on drums and percussion – both musicians whose overall sense of sound matches the wideness of Burton's scope – which makes the whole thing way way different than any familiar sort of trio recording! Instead, the balance swings easily between each of the three points on the triangle, but with different moments of force that keep things very lively, and very compelling – on titles that include the three part title track "Life's Intense Mystery", plus "Anything That Ain't Yes Get Rid Of It", "Kid Play", and "Perc Waves". ✨✧ Herbie HancockInventions & Dimensions ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A really unique little record from Herbie Hancock – one that's almost completely improvised over Latin percussion! The setup is quite spare – and quite different than Herbie's other Blue Note work – and the group features improvised backgrounds by bassist Paul Chambers and 2 Latin percussionists, Willie Bobo and Osvaldo "Chihuahau" Martinez. Herbie only wrote simple sketches for the songs on the album, and most of the work on the tracks was done live, spontaneously, in the studio – creating a very free groove that never goes too far out, but which is far more adventurous than usual. All tracks are long, and titles include "Succotash", "Triangle", and "Mimosa". LP, Vinyl record album

Jones Jones (Larry Ochs/Mark Dresser/Vladimir Tarasov)Jones In Time Saves Nine ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
There's no keeping up with these Joneses – as the well-matched trio is alive with energy throughout – really moving past any expectations we might have based on the individual players, as they make all these fantastic choices throughout – and find ways to really reach forward as a single unit, in a range of really wonderful sounds! Bassist Mark Dresser may well be our favorite part of the triangle here – as he's got this sonorous power that's completely compelling – often echoing the work of Larry Ochs on tenor and soprano saxes, but also very much standing apart – while Vladimir Tarasov moves between punctuated passages and more textural aspects of his work on drums and percussion. Titles include "A Fistful Of Jones", "Twelve Angry Jones", "Three Jones Outside Ebbing Missouri", and "The Jones Who Knew Too Much". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yusef LateefLive Session – Dedication Series Vol XIII ... LP
ABC/Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the most amazing work that Yusef Lateef ever recorded! All tracks were recorded on June 26, 1964 – at Pep's Lounge in Philly, and the group's a hard-wailing batch of soulful players that are one of the tightest that Lateef ever worked with! The 2LP set features Lateef's incredible Live At Pep's album on disc one, plus a full disc of other material that was recorded during the same set, but not issued until the time of this 1978 release. Some of the tracks have since appeared on CD – but combined with the Club Date LP issued around the same time, this set forms kind of a trilogy of material from that fantastic date. The group features some amazing piano from Mike Nock – vamping and grooving along at a pace that brings out the best in Lateef's reeds and the shimmering trumpet of Richard Williams – and the record combines all of Lateef's exotic work on flute and saxes with a groove that you'll hardly hear on other albums. Titles include "Listen To The Wind", "Number Seven", "Twelve Tone Blues", "The Magnolia Triangle", "The Weaver", and "Sister Mamie". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer tribute to the music of Herbie Nichols – played by a committed batch of modernists who are clearly inspired by his genius! Misha Mengelberg's in the group on piano – and his angular lines on the keys have plenty of Nichols and then some – lots of Misha's own inventive inflections, but given a bit more focus than usual, in ways that really make the session a standout in his career at the time. Other group members are wonderful too – Steve Lacy, playing soprano sax in ways that almost recall his Monkish moments of the late 50s – George Lewis, blowing inside one moment, open and free the next – and rhythm players Arjen Gorter on bass and Han Bennink on drums. Mengelberg arranged – and titles include the Nichols tunes "Terpsichore", "Step Tempest", "Hangover Triangle", "Spinning Song", and "House Party Starting" – plus "Change Of Season" and "The Happenings". Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2011. New Copy ... $22.99
Classic-styled funk from Alex Puddu – not only the greatest record we've heard from him so far, but a set that's definitely worthy of its "golden age" claim in the title! The music is all new, but it was done for a series of short Danish porno films from the 70s – and Puddu gets a sound that's right on the money for the vintage – loads of great short funky soundtrack modes that are perfect for the time – handled with tight rhythms, great basslines, and some wicked jazzy solos that really send the whole thing home. Puddu plays a range of instruments – including electric sitar – in a group that also features some great Fender Rhodes, organ, sax, and flute – and the tunes are really wonderful throughout – like finding a lost soundtrack from the 70s that never got issued as an album. Titles include "Kinky Hairdresser", "Miss Butterfly", "Madam Delight", "Sex Bar", "Lusty Nurses", "Black Triangle", "Naughty Girls At The Wild Party", "The Dirty Games Of Dr Love", and "Piano For Lovers". Sunnyside, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 16.98
The poetic title here really fits the mood of this well-crafted album from pianist Edward Simon – a fantastically vivid blend of jazz instrumentation from the core Afinidad quartet with elements from the Iani Winds, and some great guest work from Gretchen Parlato on vocals and Adam Rogers on guitar! The colorful images on the cover is perfect for the sound of the set – which has this sun rising quality that illuminates Simon's talents in a way we've never heard before – some deeper ideas that are never too full of themselves, and which instead find very elegant expression with help from David Binney on alto, Scott Colley on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. Parlato isn't on every track, but really shines when dhe does appear – and the woodwind quintet features flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and French horn. A totally fresh take on French sounds of the late 60s – served up here with a sound that's as revolutionary as the image on the cover! Empire, 1950s/1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wild selection of hard-hitting Cuban rarities – pulled from a host of Cuban labels that have kept out of the US during the past 40 years! Although the title says "Afro-Cuban Funk", the grooves here are much more varied – some funky, but also jazzy, percussive, and crackling with lots of Latin electricity. The style ranges heavily from track to track – as some tunes go back to pre-Castro 50s, while others are from the amazing early 70s crossover years of the Cuban scene – but the set's a really well done one overall, and is united with a freshness that steps past other simple Latin sets. Tracks are from labels that include Sound Triangle, Sonotone, Riviera, and Studio 3 – and titles include "Comin Home Baby" by Pepe Delgado, "Salida" by Orquesta Suprema, "Sabor Dominante" by Luis Santi, "No Queremos Chaperonas" by Conjunto Casino, "A Santa Barbara" by Gina Martin, "Latino Loco" by Nelson Padron, "Cambai El Paso" by Patato Valdez, and "Algo Sabroso" by Paquito Hechevarria. Context, 1981. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Funky, jazzy, and mighty righteous grooves from the Sedition Ensemble – a group who've got a great early 80s New York sense of criss-crossing styles! The messages are as political as you'd expect from the group's name – and they're delivered in a mix of sung and spoken passages by Crystal Joy, Robbie McCauley, and Valois Mickens – all names we don't know at all from other work, but who really give this set a strong sense of personality – and a good dose of soul, too! The vibe is somewhere in the spirit of some of Jayne Cortez' recordings, or maybe later work by Sarah Webster Fabio – but the music is an equal part of the record, too – given that the group features Melvin Gibbs on bass, and Bern Nix on guitar – plus trumpet from Ben Bierman, alto from Richard Fairfax, and tenor from Ed Montgomery.
