VariousIndustrial Accident – The Story of Wax Trax! Records ... CD
Wax Trax, 1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $15.99
A great little companion to the excellent film about the famous Wax Trax record store and record label – a set that brings together rare and unreleased material from some of the artists who made the company legendary back in the day! The album's the first in many years to bear the Wax Trax name – and it's like a great leap way backwards, past the darker later days of the label – to a time when the Chicago imprint was a wellspring of creative activity in the darker side of the spectrum – and a key link between our city and underground scenes around the globe. Titles include "Animal Nation" by Revolting Cocks, "Envoye" by Young Gods, "Me & My Ding Dong" by Pankow, "A Daisy Chain 4 Satan (acid & flowers mix)" and "Acid Xians" by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, "Leben Tod" by Laibach, "I Want More" by Fini Tribe, "Vogue (apart version)" by KMFDM, "Shipwreck" by Chris Connelly, and "Tonight We Murder (orig version)", "Cause We're In Love Again", and "Everyday Is Halloween (live)" by Ministry. Wax Trax, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99
A beautiful tribute to one of the greatest record stores of all time – and a place that was crucial in the formation of what we do at Dusty Groove too! Wax Trax Records began as a store in Denver in the mid 70s – influencing a generation of young punks in that city, before then moving to Chicago a few years later – where it became a key outpost for all sorts of underground culture from around the globe! We grew up as young shoppers in the store, and it forever changed the way we thought about music – and this fantastic film really gets at everything that made the place great, and then follows the growth of Wax Trax as they launched a label that gave them an even stronger global impact by the end of the 80s. The film's also tells the love store of the couple behind the legend – Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher – and features commentary and contributions from an all-star lineup that includes Steve Albini, Dave Grohl, Jello Biafra, Al Jourgensen, David J, Richard 23, Ian Mackaye, Trent Reznor, and many others – plus an insane amount of vintage footage that reminds us how exciting a city Chicago used to be! Special bonus – this package also features 75 more minutes of extra footage – longer parts of the interviews used to create the film. DVD

VariousOther Side Of The Trax – Stax/Volt 45rpm Rarities 1964 to 1968 ... CD
Stax/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $9.99
Stax Records turned out plenty of hits in the 60s – but the Memphis label was also a non-stop powerhouse of recording, and cut countless sides that were every bit as great as their hits, but never fully got their due! This collection brings together a huge amount of those gems – 24 rare Stax singles, none of which have ever been reissued – which makes this package a treasure trove of under-discovered Memphis soul, even if you've got some other Stax/Volt sets in your collection! A number of these tracks are early numbers by artists who'd break bigger on Stax later in the 60s – and others are by singers you might not know at all, but who were key to helping the label form its sound at the time – as their top-shelf team of writers and studio talents made these obscure singles every bit as great as their work for bigger artists. Titles include "I Need Somebody" by Johnny Daye, "Separation" by Carla Thomas, "Under My Nose" by Eddie Floyd, "Here I Am" by Lynda Lyndell, "Bashful Guitar" by Johnny Jenkins, "I Gotta Have My Baby's Love" by Sir Mack Rice, "Sweet Thing" by Gorgeous George, "The Big Dipper" by Sir Issac & The Do Dads, "Uh Oh I'm In Love Again" by Eddie Jefferson, "Beach Bash" by The Mar-Kays, "You Belong To Her" by Barbara & The Browns, "Strange Things" by Johnny Taylor, and "This Kind Of Woman" by Ivory Joe Hunter. An incredible record from the Chicago scene – the rare first-ever record on Wax Trax, and a lost punk nugget that's very different than anything else the label would ever release! Strike Under never made the scene as big as some of their contemporaries, but they really knocked it out of the park with this record – setting up that legacy of sharp, tuneful punk rock that The Effigies, Naked Raygun, and other Chicago groups would carry forward – served up here with the effortless punch of an early record on Dischord! Titles include "Closing In", "Sunday Night Disorientation", "Context", "Immediate Action", and "Elephant's Graveyard". 12-inch, Vinyl record

Octave (Japan), Early 70s. Used ... $18.99
Funky Japanese soundtracks galore – served up by the legendary DJ Muro! Muro's a name we can really trust for mixes of rare American funk and soul – but this time around, he turns his talents towards his homeland, and comes up with an incredible blend of rare Japanese grooves pulled from film scores – the kind of cool cuts we've been digging in the Hotwax & Trax series we've stocked from Ultra Vybe – but all filtered down into one sweet little set by Muro! The package has a whopping 38 tracks in all – all funky, and filled with loads of great beats, basslines, keyboards, and guitar – kind of a perfect distillation of the best cuts from a wide range of rare soundtracks – many of which have been reissued on CD over the years, but which are now out of print. The notes and titles are all in Japanese – but take it from us, the grooves are more than enough – and the set features over 70 minutes of rare funk! CD

VariousHardcore Traxx – Dance Mania Records 1986 to 1997 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 80s/1990s. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
A massive overview of one of the longest-running house labels from Chicago – the crucial Dance Mania imprint, second only to Trax and DJ International for its huge run of talent! Dance Mania came into being a few years into the first wave of Chicago house, but also kept its dedication to the underground for a lot longer, too – and really helped a tremendous amount of young artists to hit the studio and get their chance at turning out a groove! The label was housed in the upstairs of Barney's Records – an important west side record store and one-stop – and it dedicated itself to tracks that were maybe a bit faster, simpler, and more direct than some of the other house in Chicago at the time – often with a great style of stripping things down to all their best elements, yet still keeping things warm and soulful overall. The package features great notes on the label – and on the great Ray Barney himself (we miss your store, Ray!) – and titles include "7 Ways (club)" by Hercules, "Crazy Wild" by Club Style, "Love Will Find A Way (club)" by Victor Romeo, "Toxic Waste (club)" by Tim Harper, "I'm So Deep" by Vincent Floyd, "Falling (Armando's house mix)" by 326, "Da Bomb" by DJ Deeon, "Ghetto Shout Out" by Parris Mitchell, "Hit It From The Back" by Traxmen & Eric Martin, "The Original Video Clash – Video Class 2 (street mix)" by DJ Funk, "Feel My MF Bass" by Paul Johnson, and "Work Out" by Top Cat. 2CD set features 24 tracks in all! Sire, 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first and last major label effort for Wax Trax juggernauts Revolting Cocks – carrying on with the dawn of the 90s core line-up of Al Jourgensen, Paul Barker, Chris Connelly and Bill Rieflin, the always eclectic extended guest roster of RevCo records, for their biggest sounding album to date! There's a lot going on here – sneering spoken word social satire by Timothy Leary set to a spare industrial rock backdrop, this era of Ministry appropriate heavy guitar and samples over far funkier dark disco, their classic sinister cover of "Do You Think I'm Sexy" and more – but it ultimately stands as kind of a concise snapshot of these industrial rock pioneers at an early 90s highpoint. Includes "Gila Copter", "Creep", "Mr. Lucky", "Sergio", "The Rockabye", "Dirt", "Linger Ficken' Good" and more. CD

✨✧ Brian ShanleyDodged & Burned – Seminal Rock Photography 1976-1984 ... Book
HoZac, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible document of the punk and post punk era live music scene in Chicago by Brian Shanley – a photographer and designer who shot so many iconic bands and did design work for Wax Trax Records early on – and this book of his black & whites is pretty breathtaking if you have even a passive interest in punk or Chicago live music history in general! It captures some of the earliest Chicago appearances by solo era Iggy Pop,The Ramones, Bauhaus, Pere Ubu, Patti Smith, Motorhead, The Dead Boys and so many more, pics from some of the legendary suburban Chicago gigs in Wheeling and Schaumburg by punk bands back in the day with gigs in the city proper were harder to get, shots of seminal Chicago bands like Skafish and Tutu & The Pirates around town, shots of X in their own LA stomping grounds, Television and others at their CBGBs home base – it's one amazing shot after another here. After a short foreword and intro the book is almost all photos, every one of them vital. Book

✨✧ DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". ✨✧ VariousSweet House Chicago – A Mickey Oliver Production ... CD
M Records/Still Music, 1986. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A classic compilation from the Chicago scene – one that stood as one of the key full-length releases of house music that was bubbling under in the Windy City – important at the time, as most other albums of house music were from overseas labels issuing Chicago recordings! As you'd guess from the title, Mickey Oliver's at the helm throughout – producing the work with a nicely soulful quality – one that takes things a bit past some of the starker, colder modes that sometimes showed up on Trax Records – and which really illustrates that great second chapter as Chicago house was maturing a bit. The beats are nice and crispy throughout, the keyboards get cool and moody – and titles include "I Can't Stop For You" by Pierre's Fantasy Club, "Take It To The Top" by Joe Magic, "House Rights" by Phortune, "Suavesito" by Ralphi Rosario, "I Want Your Love" by Jamie, "Lost Me Boy" by Mickey Oliver with Dari Mor, and "Anticipate" and "I Need A Beat" by Mickey Oliver. CD featuers bonus tracks – "Anticipate (12" rmx)" by Mickey Oliver and "I Need A Beat (12" mix)" by Ralph Rosario. CD
