✨✧ Gregory PorterAll Rise ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A heck of a step forward for Gregory Porter – and we're stunned to say that, because he's already had so many great steps forward in his career! Gregory's already been a hell of a singer for years – we've loved him since the very first note he ever recorded – but with a record like this, he continues to rise into the stratosphere of a rare few singers who can transcend both their roots and their genres – with the kind of trans-generational music that will have folks listening to this set for decades – and around the world, in so many different ways! The All Rise in the title is very fitting – as this is definitely a set to lift up the world – with titles that include "Mr Holland", "Concorde", "Dad Gone Thing", "Revival", "Merchants Of Paradise", "Long List Of Troubles", "Everything You Touch Is Gold", "Merry Go Round", "Thank You", and "Phoenix". Super Fuji Discs/Trans (Japan), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used 2CD ... $28.99
The first three albums of Japanese noise legends Ruins, all presented in a single set – sounds that are as powerful and mindblowing as when they were first unleashed to the world back in the 80s! The style here is still completely revolutionary – even though so many others have tried to copy it over the years – sounds that were born in punk, but inflected by noise and free jazz – often moving at a blistering pace that's as breathtaking as it is bold! We might make some slight comparison between these guys and the Pussy Galore/Royal Trux generation of American noise guitar – but Ruins are also completely different, and made waves from halfway around the globe that are still being felt today. 51 tracks in all – with titles that include "Crisis", "Human Being", "Entropy", "Makarom Iyaike", "Government", "Grudge", "Divide", "Octopus", "Amalgam", "Infect", "Dadaism", and "Flagment". Jackie ShaneAny Other Way ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 25.98
Fantastic sounds from Jackie Shane – a Canadian soul singer who's achieved a bit of recent fame, due to her legacy as an underground trans figure – but an artist who'd already be a winner, even without such a fascinating back story! Fortunately, both sides of Jackie's life are included here – a stunning array of rare soul singles from the late 60s, alongside a heavy package of notes, photos, and other bits of Shane's unusual story – all given the wonderful Numero Group treatment! These guys have a way of digging out stories even where you might not expect them – so in the case of Jackie, their efforts are extra-important – and the heavy weight of the record really seems to emphasize that fact – as the whole thing's really a double-whammy of Numero genius. But again, even without all of that, the whole thing's more than essential for any fan of underground soul – especially female soul – half the set features her rare singles, the other lost live work – with titles that include "Sticks & Stones", "Cruel Cruel World", "Comin Down", "In My Tenement", "Send Me Some Lovin", "I've Really Got The Blues", "Stand Up Straight & Tall", "Cruel Cruel World", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", "Any Other Way", "Shotgun", "I Don't Want To Cry", and "Money". A really great step forward for Nate Fox and Nico Segal – who you might know from the Chicago collective The Social Experiment – set here to transform the world of contemporary soul on their own! The album's got this really fantastic, yet sensitive blend of modes – tunes that are often gentle on the rhythms, yet sparkle with light touches on keyboards, horns, guitar, and a bit of percussion – all used in ways that are maybe as open as the image on the front cover – a kind of more-is-less mode that really balances with the vocals! The record's got some big names as guests – including Esperanza Spaulding and Vic Mensa – but trust us, these guys on their own are already headed in a great direction. Jaimeo BrownTranscendence ... CD
Motema, 2013. Used ... $4.99
A compelling conception from drummer Jaimeo Brown – a set that mixes the jazz performance of his trio with inspiration from older gospel music – in particular the famous work of the Gee's Bend Singers, who are sampled here on a number of tracks! About half the record draws vocals from vintage Gee's Bend recordings – and the other half shifts between instrumental passages, and other new vocal performances with singer Selah Brown, Marisha Brown, and Falu. At the core, Brown's trio keeps things on edge, and pushes the project far from hoke with their nicely dark tones – subtle work on drums from Jaimeo, plus tenor from JD Allen and guitar from Chris Sholar. Titles include "Mean World", "You Can't Hide", "Patience", "Power Of God", "Be Free", "You Needn't Mind Me Dying", and "Baby Miesh". CD

Earth Wind & FireOpen Our Eyes/That's The Way Of The World/Powerlight (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Sony, 1974/1975/1983. New Copy 3CD ... $6.99
A trio of great albums from Earth Wind & Fire – packaged together here in a single set! First up is Open Our Eyes – a set that's spiritual, soulful, and oh, so beautiful! This record captures Earth Wind & Fire at a perfect transition moment – when they've still got some of their avant jazz roots, but are leaning towards the smooth soulful funk sound that put them on the charts a few years later. The whole thing's a wonderful mix of spiritualism and funky jazz – and it includes their massive cover of "Mighty Mighty", plus a lot of tracks with cool instrumentation, like "Kalimba Story", "Drum Song", and "Caribou". Great jazzy groovers, all of them! Next is That's The Way Of The World – Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". The last album is from the early 80s, but the Powerlight is burning bright – Maurice White, Philip Bailey, and the rest of the group still very much in classic formation! Even on a post-70s set like this, Earth Wind & Fire still manage to come up with tracks that beat the rest of the ensemble funk groups that grew up in their wake – groovers that still set a new level for the boogie generation, and mellow tracks that cross over beautifully without ever getting to soppy or adult contemporary. The balance is a tricky one, but the group always manage to pull it off – and guide the whole presentation of work here with enough class and care to show that the whole thing's the result of genius planning, and not just some happy accident! Titles include "Something Special", "Miracles", "Fall In Love With Me", "Straight From The Heart", and "Spread Your Love". CD

Lloyd's the center star on the album's version of his own "Forest Flower" – done here in "sunrise" and "sunset" passages – but it's really Chico's increasingly offbeat sense of rhythm that allows Lloyd and Szabo to develop their intense solos and searching grooves. Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. ✨✧ Rufus HarleyBagpipes Of The World (3CD set) ... CD
Transparency, 1995/2002/2006. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A really loving tribute to the late Rufus Harley – and a massive 3CD set of work that's quite different than his older recordings on the market! This set brings together live performances and some radio work done by Harley in the last decade or so of his life – really haunting music that shows an even deeper side of Rufus' jazz talents than we've ever heard on record! CD 1 features a rare performance by Harley in France, with the trio of pianist Georges Arvanitas – recorded in 1995, a decade or so after his studio album with the group – and these tracks are mixed with solo bagpipe numbers by Rufus – which makes for a very compelling mix. The jazz tracks have Harley on both bagpipes and soprano sax – and include "Summertime", "My Shining Hour", "It's Me", "We Me Us", and "Moon River" – mixed with untitled solo tracks, and a radio interview. CD 2 features the last Rufus Harley interview ever – nearly an hour long, and recorded on WHUS in 2006. Remaining tracks on the disc, plus more on the third disc, feature trumpeter America Patton Harley – playing with a cool group that includes Andy LaVerne on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and John Riley on drums – and another group that features Harold Mabern, Ron Carter, and Adam Nussbaum – on titles that include "A New Love Supreme", "Mr PC", "Naima", "Noah's Ark", and "Soultrane". Then, most of CD 3 features Rufus and Patton, playing together live in Jamaica in 2002 – a pretty unique performance that has Harley Sr on bagpipes and soprano sax, and Harley Jr on trumpet – with some electric backing from a Jamaican combo – on titles that include "Stormy Weather", "The Crack", "Melodies Of The World", "Scotland The Brave", and "Someday My Prince Will Come". Peven EverettLatest Craze Part 1 ... CD
Studio Confession, 2005. Used ... $5.99
Sweet homespun space soul by wunderkind Peven Everett – transcending the neo soul scene into a hugely grooving world of his own! As with the best of his other records, Peven's way of spiraling a fairly basic groove into something HUGE is nothing short of amazing. The tunes here have a similar approach to D'Angelo at his best, in the way he rolls the mood into a totally hypnotic trance – but where D'Angelo rolls and pops like grit and grease, Peven shines brightly and shoots straight up into the stars! Pev handles nearly all of the instrumentation, vocals and production – from trippy, soulful electronic ear candy, to some sweet acoustic guitar accompaniment and backing vocals. Amazing stuff – the kid really is a homespun soul genius! 15 tracks in all, including "Love This Way", "Latest Craze", "Ghetto", "Get What You Got", "Don't Go", "Street Walker", "Dillusional", and "Everything I Could". Brilliant harmony vocals by the Four Freshman – an album with a title that perfectly sums up the Four Freshman contribution to 50s jazz, and their sublime way of re-casting vocals in their work! Most of the numbers on the set are familiar ones, but they're redone by the group with a brilliant sense of interplay that really transforms them – a style that's not nearly as complicated as some of their later work with Pete Rugolo, but which is somehow even more compelling, as it features the group arranging their own vocals, and playing the instruments that back them up! Titles include "Holiday", "Street Of Dreams", "It's A Blue World", "It Happened Once Before", "After You", "My Heart Stood Still", and "Circus". LP, Vinyl record album

Molto Groovy, 2015. New Copy ... $9.99
One of the coolest, grooviest Christmas records we've heard in years – a set that's the first-ever effort from Roman Coppola's Molto Groovy Productions – and which has a mod 60s vibe all the way through! The styles here are steeped in the best Italian soundtrack modes from years back – cool keyboards, fuzzy organ, funky basslines, and lots of offbeat instrumentation that really transforms the tunes – almost as if someone like Piero Umiliani or Ennio Morricone recorded a whole album of Christmas instrumentals! The sound is perfect – even better than you might suspect from the cover – and you can take it from us, as we're not easily fooled by "fake" retro projects – and really tip our hat to these guys for getting the instrumentation, arrangements, and production just right. Most titles are familiar songs, but done in very unusual styles – and tracks include "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Joy To The World", "Jingle Bells", "Sleigh Ride", "Feliz Navidad", "Little Drummer Boy", "Silver Bells", and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". Sun RaHorizon ... LP
Saturn/Strut (UK), 1971. New Copy ... On November 13, 2020
An amazing live date from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – recorded in Cairo in 1971, with a very transcendent sound overall! Ra and the group are clearly inspired to be working in the shadow of the pyramids – and their music sometimes has Eastern overtones, a bit in the manner of Salah Ragab – their associate in Egypt – yet at other times, things get quite outside and noisy too! The keyboards are especially wonderful – as Ray plays "tiger organ" and moog, in addition to conventional piano – adding in the electronics with really spacey tones that really push the limits of the music. And some of the reeds really help shape the sound of the songs too – stark and soulful at key moments, but also forceful in formation at others – played by John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute and alto, Danny Thompson on baritone and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Danny Davis on flute and alto, Larry Northington on alto, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet . The group comes together for a tight reading of "Space Is The Place" – and other titles include "3rd Planet", "Horizon", "Starwatchers", and "Shadow World". LP, Vinyl record album

Symphonic soul from The Supremes – a set that still has the trio working with the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland team, but with a full set of orchestral backings that help them hit even more class and sophistication than before! Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Amazing sounds from a time when the London scene really took off – when it left behind some of its slavish love of American sounds in previous decades, and exploded with blinding dancefloor energy of its own! The music here represents a true UK hybrid – crafted after years of American house hitting the UK shores, transforming into the happier grooves of the early e-driven years, all while Thatcher's Britain kept stepping further into the dark. Enter the sounds of the city – a new wave of electric energy that was instantly urban and cosmic at the same time – beats that were as bold as hip hop, but even faster than house music – balanced by heavy-stepping, bass-bottom cuts that represented a far evolution beyond more familiar dub! The mix of modes set a fire that was heard around the world – leading to rhythmic changes for decades to come – and this great little package samples some of the best from the underground at the time, a scene that was already getting plenty of its own inspiration from the young Soul Jazz label. Titles include "Durban Poison" by Babylon Timewarp, "The Smokers Rhythm" by Rhythm For Reasons, "Snowball Remix" by Trip One, "Time & Age" by The Freaky, "Tings A Go On" by DJ Dubplate, "RK1" by The Terrorist, "Way Of Life" by New Vision, "Chill Out" by Hi Fi Power, "House Sensation" by Nu Jacks, and "Burial" by Leviticus. Riverside/Fantasy, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bill Evans' first album as a leader – and a well-titled set that went onto transform the sound of the piano in jazz! The session isn't as lyrically free as some of Evans' later classics, but already has an undeniably fresh approach to the keys – one that's modern, yet never academic – fluid, but never flowery – pure genius of economy and understatement, while also at the same time opening bold new worlds in sound. The trio features drummer Paul Motian and bassist Teddy Kotick, and titles include the classics "Five" and "Waltz For Debby", the latter of which is performed solo by Evans – plus tracks that include "Displacement", "I Love You", "My Romance", "No Cover, No Minimum", and "Our Delight". Dusk Fire (UK), 1991. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual meeting of the minds – as legendary guitarist John Scofield works here with the famous British big band of Mike Gibbs – an ensemble that had been making waves for decades by the time of this recording! Gibbs was always one of the most colorful of the modern British talents at the end of the 60s – a trombonist, composer, and arranger who was always strongly aware of tone – especially the unusual moments that could arise when putting key talents together in his always-modern ensemble! The lineup here lives up to that legacy – as it also features Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Tony Coe on tenor, John Taylor on piano, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Steve Swallow on bass – all players whose early work helped transform the UK scene, and who still sound great at the start of the 90s. The album's a double-length set – and titles include "Meant To Be", "Lost In Space", "Pretty Out", "Blueprint", "Science & Religion", "Fat Lip", "World Without", "Out Of The Question", and "Don't Overdo It". Aum Fidelity, 2010. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Titles include "I Plan To Stay A Believer", "If There's A Hell Below", "This Is My Country", "People Get Ready/The Inside Song", "It's Alright", "Freddie's Dead", "New World Order", and a great 17 minute take on "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue". The title certainly gets it right – as the lovely Juliette Greco was perhaps the most distinct voice on the left bank of Paris in the postwar years – a singer who forever helped transform the sound of chanson, and pave the way for the sexy styles of other singers to come in the 60s! Greco's style here is simple, but powerful – never as overly-emotive as some of her contemporaries, and always presented with an open, honest knowledge of the world's charms and its challenges – which really comes through in the well-selected batch of work for the set. Tracks are from an assortment of rare French EP releases, and the package features 26 titles in all – tracks that include "Accordeon", "Les Feuilles Mortes", "Jolie Mome", "Je Hais Les Dimanches", "Souls Le Ciel De Paris", "Je Suis Comme Je Suis", "C'Etait Bien", "Chanson Pour L'Auvergnat", "La Fete Aux Copains", "Ca Va", "Chandernagor", and "La Fiancee Du Pirate". Transparency, 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing document of the California underground scene of the 70s – four volumes worth of material from the Los Angeles Free Music Society – recorded by a range of different artists who were all invited to contribute cheaply to a series of Blorp Esette albums! The range of work here is really massive – and in a way, the whole thing comes together more as a sound collage than anything else – some highly arty music mixed with trippier rock sounds, bits of roots, avant sound experimentation, and more – all coming across with a style that's incredibly fierce, kind of post-hippie, pre-CA hardcore – a slice of the west coast that's really been lost to time. There's definitely strains here of some of the SF scene that you'll find in the Ralph Records world – but much of it is a lot more obscure too, and there's almost a west coast version of the East Village/ESP sound going down too. 4CDs worth of work, and way too much to list here – but we can say that contributors include The Doo Dooettes, Ju Suk Reet Meate, Anne Harney, Reverend Marty Nation, Smegma, Nopar King, South Pasedena Free Music Ensemble, Ace & Duce, Bix Flent, Christian Death, Dennis Duck, Henry Kaiser, Mr Foon, Electric Willy Trio, The Patients, Ed Barger, and many others. Excellent Japanese LP that combines 2 of Gil Melle's rare 10" LPs for Blue Note: New Faces – New Sounds and The Gil Melle Quintet. The first LP features 2 different groups, and has Melle's haunting tenor playing amidst other bop-era modernists like Eddie Bert, Tal Farlow, George Wallington, and Max Roach. Tracks on this session include "The Gears", "October", "Cyclotron", and "Venus". The Quintet LP features Melle on tenor and baritone, playing with Tal Farlow and Urbie Green – and it includes the tracks "Timepiece", "Spellbound", and "Transition". Both sets are amazing, and the music is out-of-this world – with a sound that's unlike anything Blue Note ever did again, and which transcends any sort of traditional descriptions of jazz from the time. ✨✧ Sun RaLive In London 1970 ... CD
Transparency, 1970. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Weird sounds from Sun Ra – material from a 1970 performance in London, with some of the most far-reaching, most out-there music you'll hear from the Arkestra at the time! Things start in a very "out" part of the spectrum – wild electronics on a variety of keyboards from Ra – eventually distilling down with more organic elements to a groove that takes on some slightly more earthy jazz tones, yet always in ways that threaten to soar to the skies once again! There's a nice degree of echo in the recording, which seems to abstract things even more – and given the good acoustics of the concert space (The Queen Elizabeth Hall), you can almost feel the Arkestra really playing with the sound of the room, and letting their improvisations take flight as a result. The group is fairly large, especially for an overseas tour at this point – and titles include lots of improvisations, plus "Planet Earth", "Life Is Splendid", "Theme Of The Stargazers", "The Shadow World", and "Walking On The Moon". Quite an obscure little live set from Sun Ra – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the amount of live material he's got out there! The performance was found on a reel simply titled "Spacemaster Concert", and recorded at an undetermined date in the early 70s – and it's easily one of the starkest, most challenging recordings so far in the Lost Reel series! There's a fair bit of electric keyboards on the set – often played with some noisier tones, and offset with vocals by June Tyson, and instrumentation by John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Kwami Hadi. Many numbers are less orchestral than sparer small combo performances – and titles include "Outer Space/Untitled Improvisation", "Exotic Forest", "Shadow World", "Strange Worlds/Untitled Improvisation", "Stardust From Tomorrow", and "Friendly Galaxy/Watusi". Rare Sun Ra – so much so, it's falling off the reel – but also fortunately nicely resurrected here by the folks at Transparency, who've been doing a great job of unearthing obscure Arkestra performances from the group's best years! This album dates from 1973, and comes from a Gibus performance in Paris – one that features the group moving between some fierce, free, avant-styled work – and some more spiritual moments that are very much in the best Space Is The Place vintage! As part of that latter half, vocals figure in nicely at a few spots – sung by June Tyson, Ruth Wright, Cheryl Banks, and Judith Holton – and the core group features John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Ray Thompson on baritone and flute, Danny Davis on alto and alto clarinet, James Jacson on bassoon and flute, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet and flute, Kwami Hadi and Akh Tal Ebah on trumpets – a very horn-heavy lineup that sounds great here. Ra plays electric keyboard and "space instruments" – and titles include "Prepare For The Journey To Other Worlds", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", "Why Go To The Moon", "Discipline 27", and "Astro Black". Cadet/Universal (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Some of the trippiest soul music ever recorded – an amazing collection of work by the legendary Rotary Connection – early home to vocalist Minnie Riperton and arranger Charles Stepney! Rotary Connection was a unique late 60s combination of soul, jazz, and rock-based modes – all inflected by more baroque production styles coming down in the Chicago scene of the time – balanced perfectly by the genius of Stepney – who often drew inspiration from avant classical work to round out his sound! Stepney gave the group a heady heady sound that went far beyond the airy vocal sound of Minnie Riperton or the rougher edge of Sidney Barnes – and the mix of unusual instrumentation, odd recording techniques, and strange timings made the group's music years ahead of its time – at a level that's really only fully appreciated these many years later. This 2CD set goes way beyond previous collections of Rotary Connection work, because it shows a real appreciation for the more adventurous sounds of Stepney in the studio – and brings together the trippiest, most freewheeling cuts from the group's 4 albums for Chess/Cadet – as well as a number of key tunes that have been heavily sampled over the years. 33 tracks in all – including "The Salt Of The Earth", "Rapid Transit", "Magical World", "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun", "A-Muse", "Sursum Mentes", "Memory Band", "Hey Love", "The Sea & She", "Song For Everyman", "Love Is", "We're Going Wrong", "Life Could", "Teach Me How To Fly", "VIP", "Let Them Talk", "Love Has Fallen On Me", "Respect", "Pink Noise", "Want You To Know", and "This Town". At the time of the record, Charles was part of a whole new generation of hardboppers who were coming up in a world of new ideas – a time when Coltrane, Shepp, and Ayler were transforming the left side of jazz – while other musicians were pushing the boundaries of more familiar modes too. Tolliver worked with Horace Silver, Max Roach, and others at the time – and here, he's a brilliant leader right out of the box – set up with an all-star combo that features Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – perfect partners for exploring the new music that Charles brings to the record. Gary Bartz joins the group on the second half – another young player about to transform a generation – and the whole album's a dream all the way through, with the mix of soul and spirit of some of Woody Shaw's first records, or maybe Bartz's first few albums for Milestone. That's a sexy lady on the cover, and there's lots of sexy sounds within – music from a whole new generation of Italian soundtrack genius – a time when disco influences were being used to transform some of the groovy modes that always made Italian film scores so great! The disco styles here are mostly in the rhythms – as lots of the instrumentation follows in ways that reference early 70s Italian cop and crime – and, to a lesser extent, some of the mod and bossa styles of the late 60s – all handled by the cream of the crop of the Italian film world, mostly with an instrumental approach! The set list is great, and really brings together the best examples of the genres, and avoids some of the cheesy, clunky tunes that sometimes got in the way on larger soundtracks – which makes for a cool compilation that really packs one hell of a punch! An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

One of the hippest albums from the funky empire that includes Poets Of Rhythm and The Whitefield Brothers – a set of Afro-exotic grooves that really blows our minds – and which opens the group up into whole new territory! There's echoes of Mulatu, Salah Ragab, and other older exotic funk artists in the mix – but as usual for the Poets, the whole thing's put together with a sharp edge of its own – a keen ear for catching the best elements of the original music, and distilling them down to a super-powerful essence – then re-presenting and oddly-producing them with some very unique sounds! Karl Hector joins the group on vocals and percussion – and other instrumentation includes ballaphon, metallophon, horns, and keyboards – all used in really enigmatic ways, and with other-worldly sounds that are simply amazing! A great set by Stan Kenton – one that applies the dark tones of his style to a range of popular numbers that end up completely transformed! The album features some wonderful charts from arranger Lennie Niehaus – emerging here as one of the more complicated talents of the west coast scene of the time – and stepping off the strength of his 50s small group sessions, into a realm that really points the way towards his later soundtrack work. The sound is lush and filled with colors from the dark end of the spectrum – mostly carried by a mellophonium-heavy horn section, but also featuring some redemptive moments on breakout solos. Great work from the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo – a group who've lost none of their power over the years, and who bristle with as much energy here as on their classic albums of the 70s! In fact, there may well be a more-classic vibe going on here, compared to the group's sound as it changed over the years – as the production is simple and straightforward, and free of both any attempt to try for a world music crossover hit, or any effort to "authenticate" the group with a too-rootsy sound. Instead, the whole thing just perfectly captures that wicked current of funk that the group always had at their best – a transformation of the Latin influences that were hitting west Africa in the late 60s, with more of the tightness inspired by James Brown – yet never in a way that's slavish to any influence at all. A fantastic run of records – music that firmly established John Prine as one of the most inventive singer/songwriters of the 70s! Prine rose up out of the Chicago folk scene of the 60s – but he soon became something different than just a folk or country singer – even though he was admired strongly by both worlds of music. Instead, John's songs took on this new sense of wit and bite learned from folk, but delivered in a style that was maybe less preachy – but also not as rural as the vibe of country tunesmiths who were changing things up at the time. There's definitely echoes of the work of Kris Kristofferson or Shel Silverstein in Prine's words – but the execution is completely his own, and transforms wonderfully over the course of these records – at a level that shows just how much the singer was able to keep ahead of the pack, and keep his contributions relevant over the years. The box features the full albums John Prine, Diamonds In The Rough, Sweet Revenge, Common Sense, Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac, and Storm Windows – in LP replica sleeves, with new notes, and poster inserts too. Mike Reed, edCity Was Yellow – Chicago Jazz & Improvised Music 1980-2010 ... Book
Mike Reed, 2019. New Copy ... $28.99 35.00
A beautiful book on the Chicago jazz scene, and the things that make it really special – not the Windy City world of years back – when Ramsey Lewis and other big names were dominating things – but Chicago in more recent years, when the city has been a non-stop hotbed of continuous creative activity! Musician Mike Reed is the guiding force here – himself a key part of the growth of the past decade or two – and the presentation is very unique, with a short essay on a key musician, accompanied by a photo, then also a piece of music by the artist – transcribed on full sheet music, scoring a key contribution – in a way that makes the large volume both a history book and a book of sheet music as well. Entries are by key critical forces on the Chicago scene – John Corbett, Peter Margasak, John Litweiler, Neil Tesser, and others – and the presentation is as beautiful as the sounds it seeks to document. Entries include sections on Nicole Mitchell, Jason Adasiewicz, Ken Vandermark, Jeff Parker, Von Freeman, Mantana Roberts, Willie Pickens, and many others – and the book is oversize, 154 pages, softcover, and in two-tone color throughout. Run-DMCKing Of Rock ... LP
Profile, 1985. Very Good ... $29.99
Run-DMC's great second album, with rock hard production by Russell Simmons and classic cuts! It's fascinating to listen to this album all these years later, with the knowledge that this hungry hip hop act from Queens was so soon to conquer the world. Great stuff from a legendary crew! This is the record where Run-DMC transitioned from their earlier style that put their own distinctive stamp on early-to-mid 80s east coast rap, to the rap group who fearlessly put rock music on notice that rap was coming to takeover. Amazing! Includes "Jam Master Jammin", "Can You Rock It Like This", "King Of Rock", "Rock The House", "You're Blind", "You Talk Too Much", "It's Not Funny" and "Darryl And Joe (Krush-Groove 3)". San Ul Lim3 ... CD
World Psychedelia (Korea), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $3.99
Super fuzzed out, trippy 70s psych rock from Korea's San Ul Lim – an album recorded by the Seoul rockers in the power trio format of guitar, bass and drums – but with such a fuzzy, dense tone that it's hard to fathom how on Earth they got the sound! The opening track starts in wonderfully eye-opening fashion with the buzzing guitar sound and raspy vocals – but the follow up tracks have a softer vocal tone and more of a spacey effect – kind of evocative of "Sister Ray" in the relentless buzz sounds, but with a more lilting overall vibe! Includes notes in English, but the titles are Korean – 5 tracks in all, including a mammoth 18 minute closer! (Apologies for the lack of track titles – the booklet includes an English language essay, but not a translation for the song titles!) CD

Frank Sinatra/Phil Spector/Elvis Presley/Bing Crosby/Ella FitzgeraldChristmas Tale – Timeless Classic Albums (Jolly Christmas/Christmas Gift To You/Christmas Album/Merry Christmas/Swinging Christmas) (5CD set) ... CD
Vinylogy (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $12.99
A great set of Christmas classics – five albums, each represented with LP-styled artwork in a box of 5 CDs! First up is Jolly Christmas by Frank Sinatra – one of the greatest Christmas albums of the 20th century – a rich tapestry of sadness and longing from Ol' Blue Eyes himself! Sure, most folks think that Christmas albums are supposed to be cheery and celebratory – but Frank, coming off of his best Wee Small Hours years at Capitol, rightly chose the sadder side of Christmas – and put together an album full of songs that really get at the bluer side of the holiday. Side one of the set includes some tremendous secular songs – the kind of mid-century tunes that often had a dark undercurrent of separation and unfulfilled desire – masquerading as holiday tunes, but in Frank's hands, coming off more like smokey late night tunes of lost love and wasted life. Side two's got some more spiritual-oriented tunes – but again, done by Frank, with arrangements by Gordon Jenkins, these tunes come off with a lot less celebratory spirit than you'd expect. Titles include "The Christmas Waltz", "Mistletoe & Holly", "The Christmas Song", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear", and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". Next is A Christmas Gift To You – Phil Spector's classic Christmas album – a swirling delight of 60s pop and soul numbers, still one of the greatest full Christmas LPs ever recorded! The whole thing is wonderful – a mix of soul, rock, and pop – all produced with that classic "wall of sound" style that made Phil Spector such an early production genius in the 60s! The music is from those magical times when boundary-busting art and craft were mixed perfectly with pop styles that anyone could instantly fall in love with – and titles include "Frosty The Snowman" by The Ronettes, "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans, "Marshmallow World" by Darlene Love, "Sleigh Ride" by The Ronnettes, "Winter Wonderland" by Darlene Love, "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town" by The Crystals, and "Silent Night" by Phil and other artists on the set! Next is Elvis Christmas Album – an early Holiday gem from Elvis Presley – a set that had RCA Records wisely rushing the young singer into the studio to cut a host of Christmas tunes – which ensured that Elvis would be spinning on the turntable for many seasons to come! Titles include "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Silent Night", "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and "Santa Bring My Baby Back". Next is Merry Christmas from Bing Crosby – which may well be THE Christmas album of the 20th century – a 50s issue of 40s singles cut by Der Bingle, packaged in a cover with a classic cover image that's ensured that the record stayed in print for dozens of Decembers in years to come! Given that Bing virtually owned Christmas on TV during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the album's place in popular music is well-earned – and honestly, Bing's "aw shucks, I'm just reg'lar folks" sort of approach to these tunes really helped create a kind of common man secular side to the Holidays that forever transformed America's celebration of the season. Or maybe we're going to far with this one . . . But whatever the case, the album's a standard, and one we were certainly raised on. Titles include "Silver Bells", "Jingle Bells", "Silent Night", "White Christmas", "Adeste Fideles", "Faith Of Our Fathers", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", and "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas". Last up is Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! ✨✧ United Future OrganizationV ... CD
Exceptional (UK), 2002. Used ... $9.99
Incredible work from United Future Organization – light years ahead of anything else they've ever done! The album shows a tremendous growth in instrumental styles – with more of a preoccupation with the overall shapes and sound of their music, grown here to expansive limits, encompassing a richer array of modes than ever before! Many tracks begin with isolated instrumentation – quite introspective and warm, building slowly without the cheap tricks of some of their more flashy work – confident in a decade's worth of musical exploration, and willing to take the time to craft something completely new out of a lifetime's worth of cultural references. There's plenty of room on the album for guests, too – including Mark Murphy, Nathan Haines, Valerie Etienne, Jeffery Smith, and Sabrina Malheiros – and the overall sound of the album is like nothing you'd ever expect from the group! Titles include "Microcosmo", "World Thing", "Lunar Enfant", "No Problem", "Everyday Routine", "Esperanza", "Suite Espagnole", and "Transworld". CD

VariousLamp Records – It Glowed Like The Sun – The Story Of Naptown's Motown 1969 to 1972 ... LP
Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $44.99 55.98
An overdue look at the lost Lamp Records – a crucially important indie soul label on the Indy scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a company that was never as big as Chess or Motown, but did a similar job of documenting its city's musical scene! Indianapolis was always a very diverse city – and gave the world bigger funk and jazz luminaries like Wes Montgomery or Funk Inc – but like most cities of its size, Indy also sported a rich underground of great singers and bands who were really trying to make it big – all really great artists who were captured in deep detail by the Lamp Records label! Now Again/Stones Throw have given us a slight look at this scene in the past – most notably with their reissues of work by Ebony Rhythm Band – but this is the first really detailed dig into the label, with a huge amount of material that's only ever circulated on very rare original pressings. The work is a great mix of group soul, funky cuts, sweet harmony, and even a bit of gospel – and titles on this 2LP set include "Somebody Please" by The Vanguards, "You Made My Everything" by Words Of Wisdom Truth Revue, "Hum Bug" by Diplomatics, "I Didn't Know" by Funder Cooper, "Go To Work" by Revolution Compared To What, "Everybody Who Wants To Be Free" by Amnesty, "Can I Call You Baby" by The Pearls, "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls, "High On The Hill" by Squidd, "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band, "See The Lord" by Mighty Indiana Travelers, "Huh" by Tony Black & Revolution Compared To What, "I'm Only Human" by Embers, "It Swells My Desire" by The PHDs, and "More Than I Can Stand" by Moonlighters. VariousMore Ethiopian Soul & Groove – Ethiopian Urban Modern Music Vol 3 (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Buda/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Mad music that's unlike anything else we can think of – a killer collection of funky grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – offered up here on a vinyl-only compilation! The set's a great one if you've heard the music of Mulatu, but want to dig a lot deeper – as the cats included on this set are most of his contemporaries from the golden years of Ethiopian music – and most of them work in a similar offbeat, other-worldly sort of style! Rhythms are skittish, horns are hypnotic, and the vocals on some of the tracks have a weird appeal that really transcends the boundaries of language – almost like another instrumental element that fits in wonderfully with the heavy grooves underneath. Titles on the collection are pulled from various volumes of the Ethiopiques series – making this set kind of a distillation of all its greatness. Tracks include "Yebeqagnal" and "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Queresh Endewaza" by Samuel Belay, "Ewnetegna Feqer" by Hirut Bequele, "Lomiwen Teqebeletch" by Mahmoud Ahmed, "Gedamay" by Getatchew Mekurya, and "Metche New" by Asselefetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret. Wonderful easy grooves – from an orchestra leader who couldn't read a note of music! During the 60s, Andrew Oldham was probably best known to the world as the flamboyant manager of the Rolling Stones – but during the same period, or at least the earliest stretch of it, he also headed up his own studio orchestra – working with pop arranger David Whittaker to craft some incredibly groovy albums! This one's the ensemble's fourth and final effort – a magical transformation of familiar Rolling Stones numbers into some sweet easy instrumentals – all asparkle with the best styles of mid 60s Brit easy, served up with orchestrations that run from baroque to breezy! Titles include "Blue Turns To Grey", "You Better Move On", "Heart Of Stone", "Time Is On My Side", "The Last Time", "Theme For A Rolling Stone", and "Tell Me". CD

Noisy brilliance from AMM – one of the most important avant acts of the 60s – and an incredible bridge between jazz, psych, and 20th Century classical worlds! The group were a powerhouse on the London scene of the middle of the decade – reportedly a huge influence on Pink Floyd, too – and all these many years later, there's hardly been a record to match the power of this amazing debut – a record that was even more equally amazingly released by Elektra Records on its first pressing! These guys may have made the most noise anyone had in the studio for this set – and that even includes the Velvet Underground, and any 60s electronic musician too – and the legendary lineup features Cornelius Cardew on piano, cello, and transistor radio; Lou Gare on tenor and violin; Eddie Prevost on drums, xylophone, bells, and cymbals; Keith Rowe on guitar and transistor radio; and Lawrence Sheaff on cello, accordion, clarinet, and one more transistor radio. Heru Avenger John Basil is in the group on bass, and is credited with "visions" for the lineup – and R Scott co-leads on keyboards, which often get the chance to spin out in these really great ways. But there's also definitely some strong group energy going on – a more collaborative, spiritual feel – from instrumentation that includes woodwinds, vibes, harp, theremin, viola, wood flute, and a lot of percussion. Delicious Vinyl, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
A monumental piece of funk – and a record that came into the world at a time when it seemed like just about everyone had forgotten how to play real funky music! This set's the US version of the first album by London scenesters The Brand New Heavies – and although it came out in the states 2 years after the UK set, it's essentially the same record – just featuring new vocals by singer N'Dea Davenport in place of the original vocalist Jay Ella Ruth. Davenport's vocals transported the group from indie acid jazz obscurity into the US soul charts in a way that nobody ever expected – and the resulting album is a stone classic that's filled with excellent cuts like "Ride In The Sky", "Never Stop", "Dream Come True", and "Stay This Way". Great stuff all around – and one of the few classic soul albums of its generation! CD

✨✧ MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Music On Vinyl (UK), 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. A sublime collaboration – and one that might be one of the best moments for both artists in the 90s – as Jah Wobble returns to all that great realm of sonic experimentation from the immediate years after he departed Public Image Limited – and Brian Eno has the strong sense of collaboration as some of his key German recordings at the end of the 70s! The music began as Eno sounds for a Derek Jarman film, but Wobble took up the recordings, brought along Can's monstrous drummer Jaki Liebezeit – and the whole thing took shape in a very different way – tunes that are faithful to the legacy of both artists, and which remind us of what they can give the world when they're dong their best. A great pairing of two key John Fahey albums from the 60s! Yellow Princess is an album as lovely as its title, and John Fahey's 8th record – mostly solo guitar, but with guest drums and bass on 2 cuts – "March For Martin Luther King" and "Dance of The Inhabitants Of The Invisible City Of Bladensburg". The sound is extremely magical – introspective, yet far-seeing – with that fragile sense of being in the world that's made Fahey's work endure far longer than that of most of his contemporaries. Other titles include "Irish Setter", "Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion At Magruder Park", and "Lion". Requia is excellent work by Fahey – all solo, and featuring some wonderful production on the guitar that brings out all the brilliance of his warm chromatic playing. Side one features "Requiem For John Hurt", "Requiem For Russell Blaine Cooper", and "When The Catfish Is In Bloom" – and side two features the four-part "Requiem for Molly", which has Fahey's guitar over some very cool effects!
