TrammpsBurn Baby Burn – Disco Inferno – The Trammps Albums 1975 to 1980 (8CD set) ... CD
Warner/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 8CD ... $39.99 65.99
The set's titled after a massive 70s hit from this groundbreaking group – but it also really shows the full range of expression that the Trammps unleased in the 70s – the kind of top-quality work that made them one of the key acts to go from the soul music underground to the top of the charts in the disco generation! Unlike some of their contemporaries, The Trammps had a longer legacy in soul music – and come from that moment on the east coast scene where groups were picking up the pace slightly, and bringing older soul modes to the dancefloor – a move that the group does so well with well-crafted instrumentation, tight vocals, and a great ear for a song! That means that the Trammps are a soul group first, and a disco group second – with a rich legacy of music that's finally presented here in one great package – a huge 8CD set that brings together all their albums from the late 70s, plus bonus tracks – along with notes on the group as well. The set features the full albums Trammps, Legendary Zing Album, Where The Happy People Go, Disco Inferno, Trammps III, Whole World's Dancing, Mixin It Up, and Slipping Out – plus bonus tracks from singles as well. ✨✧ TrammpsLegendary Zing Album ... CD
Buddah/K West (Netherlands), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first full album cut by The Trammps – and a landmark bit of Philly club sounds! The group had already been grooving the burgeoning east coast disco scene for years, which is why the album's called The Legendary Zing Album (the group's version of "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart" was a big early hit, and supposedly led people to ask for a "Zing" album.) The whole thing's got a massive Harris-Baker-Young sound – with that sweet groove that the trio were pioneering in Philly, a mixture of small combo grooving with strings added in at just the right points. The Trammps themselves add in some great harmonies – never overwhelmed by the full sound of the grooves, singing very much in a Spinners mode on cuts like "Pray All You Sinners", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "Rubber Band", and "Hold Back The Night". The album also features two great instrumentals – "Tom's Song" and "Penguin At The Big Apple" – both of which have that sweeeeet Norman Harris guitar! CD

Golden Fleece/CBS, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful early work from The Trammps – recorded before the group got a bit too bogged down in their own disco fame, when they were still capable of hitting that tight, right Philly club groove! The album's got a simple brilliance that sparkles almost more than the Gamble & Huff work at the time – recorded at Sigma Sound with a warm harmonies on the vocals, and sweetly gliding strings over the rhythms – all produced to perfection from the team of Ronnie Baker, Norman Harris, and Earl Young! Most numbers are groovers, but in a relatively restrained sort of way – and titles include "Trammps Disco Theme", "Stop & Think", "Love Epidemic", "Save A Place", "I Know That Feeling", and "Where Do We Go From Here". ✨✧ Bee Gees, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, & OthersSaturday Night Fever ... CD
Polygram, 1977. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". ✨✧ VariousNorthern Soul Memories Vol 2 ... CD
Goldmine (UK), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
"Memories" is probably a strangely placed word in the title of this one – as most of the tracks are lesser-known gems from the 1970s and 80s, produced by Brit soul maestro Ian Levine, and featuring classic stars from the 60s and 70s. Levine's got a good talent for bringing out the best in some of these recently underrecorded soul artists – and the CD fits in well with other UK efforts to resurrect American soul greats. There's a strong Detroit influence here, but the modern soul production style on most cuts makes the CD stand stronger than just a retro kind of effort. Titles include "Gambling On Your Love" by LJ Johnson, "Snake In The Grass" by The Exciters, "Possessed" by Doris Jones, "Lucky Number" by Ronnie McNeir, "My Head's In the Stars" by Evelyn Thomas, "You're Gonna Love My Baby" by Barbara McNair, "Feet Don't Fail Me Now" by The Trammps, "Back By Popular Demand" by The Supremes & The Originals, "Just Another Rumor" by Tyrone Ashley, and "You Take My Breath Away" by Moonstone. 22 cuts in all!
