TraditionAlternative Routes (with bonus track) ... CD
RCA/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Mellow-stepping reggae from Tradition – a record that's maybe got the group at their most soulful overall, and working in this fantastic blend of Jamaican rhythms and other inspirations borrowed from the American group soul scene on the east coast! The music is definitely reggae, and certainly in the lover's rock side of the spectrum – but there are times when the harmonies in the vocals feel as if they've been influenced strongly by groups from the New Jersey or Philly scenes a few years before – which almost makes the album feel as if Sylvia Robinson and George Kerr decided to produce an All-Platinum session in Kingston. Titles include "Everybody's Looking At Me", "Never Gonna Settle Down", "Love Is A Wonderful Thing", "Reach My Goal", "Gambling Man", and "Everybody's Looking At Me". CD features the bonus track "I Gave You Everything (12" version)". CD

TraditionCaptain Ganja & The Space Control (with bonus track) ... CD
Venture/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
If you had to imagine what Captain Ganja & The Space Control might sound like, you'd probably get it right from the very first try – especially if you were looking at the cover of the album at the time! The set's a very spacey take on dub modes of the 70s – often augmented by lots of weird electronics, and even given a very trippy production approach throughout – so that even some more familiar instruments echo out in space, and seem to transform themselves while they decay! The approach might sound a bit like the On-U Sound style of the time, but it's actually even more way-out and freewheeling – and titles include "Escape & Return", "Rocket Repairs", "Alien Circus", "The Creepy Crawl", "The Breathtaking Blast", and "Planet Play/Laser Games". RCA/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Really well-done work from Tradition – a UK reggae act of the late 70s who never reached the fame of some of their contemporaries, but who really have a great sound on this album for RCA! As with some of the more commercial UK efforts of the period, there's a nice current of soul in the mix – not lovers rock, but maybe an influence from the style that makes the mellow-stepping cuts here really come off well – still with plenty of righteous message in the lyrics, but also a warmly-crafted quality that makes for some nicely subtle presentation. Still, things are far from commercial here – the record's got a very down to earth vibe – and titles include "Time", "African Queen", "Mash", "I Am Thinking", "I Am So Glad", and "True What I Man Say". CD features bonus track "One More Step (original 12" mix)". CD

Solid Groove/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $46.99 49.99
The final album from Tradition, and a set that's very different than some of their earlier work – but in a way that really makes the record a standout in their catalog! The group here are billed as Tradition Featuring Paul Thompson – and keyboardist Thompson is really the strongest "voice" on the record – stretching out in all these really cool solo lines that are often more moogy than the sort of organ lines you'd hear from Jackie Mittoo or Winston Wright – which gives the record this cool spacey quality that sounds mighty nice, and very different than some of their more soul-based records from a few years before! Production is nice and lean, and the keyboards sound great amidst the mellow-stepping grooves – on titles that include "Tribute To A King", "In Memory Of A Legend", "Over & Over", "Anthology Of Music", "I'm A Clown", and "Return Of Big Foot". Features the bonus track "Can I Take You Home". LP, Vinyl record album

Venture/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
One of the more obscure albums from this excellent UK reggae group – initially a limited edition set sold in a relatively unassuming cover – and one that features a great mix of cuts that showcase the group in all their best modes! Some tunes are wonderfully soulful and mellow, others are moody and more dub-influenced – and overall, there's a lean, gritty quality that's very different than so much mainstream work of the time, particularly on the British reggae scene – almost as if producer/arranger Tyrone is taking more cues from underground American soul of a few years before. Titles include "Paradise", "never Gonna Settle Down", "Herb Trees", "International Rockers", "Squeezing", "Ebony Eyes", and "War". CD features the bonus track "Be Gentle With Me (12" mix)". CD

RCA/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album that's definitely awash in the dub that's promised in the title – maybe delivered with a bit more class and cleaned-up sound than some of the more homegrown experiments in Kingston – but still with a real love of the approach overall! There's a quality here that maybe echoes with some of the Compass Point work of the period, but more down to earth – great little grooves that step along slowly, with plenty of righteous vocals that flow in and out of the mix – while the well-crafted production elements from David Tyrone really make a special sort of magic on the tunes! Titles include "Gambling Dub", "Dub Out War", "Reggae Music Dub", "Dub Down Here", "Why Dub", "Herbs Tree Dub", and "Dub In Paradise". Includes the bonus track "Pick Yourself Up (original 12" version)". CD

Anthony BraxtonIn The Tradition Vol 2 ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1976. Very Good+ ... $14.99 19.99
Wonderful work from Anthony Braxton – an album that has him playing straight ahead jazz – but at a time when he was also making some of his most complex recordings of the 70s! The approach here is sublime – as Braxton's reputation has ears already anticipating some far-out playing, but then marvel at his restraint – his care for keeping alto and bass clarinet work inside a straight jazz tradition, yet always hinting at the modern inflections he can bring to his music! Tunes are almost all jazz standards, blown beautifully – with a tone that's crisp, cool, and very inviting – surprisingly soulful, and never cold at all – matched well with the rhythm trio of Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Donna Lee", "My Funny Valentine" and "Half Nelson". LP, Vinyl record album

Ancient Archive Of Sound (UK), 2020. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic album in the new dub tradition that UK saxophonist Nat Birchall has been exploring – recorded modes that are very different than his spiritual jazz albums, but equally cool overall! The vibe here is maybe like some lost date recorded at King Tubby's – but with more of a jazz element in the mix – as Birchall plays tenor and flute, plus piano, melodica, organ, bass, and percussion – all in this swirling mix that's created by Al Breadwinner – who's not only the producer and mixer, but adds in his own organ, drums, guitar, piano, melodica, and percussion! The group are joined by Vin Gordon – whose trombone is an excellent balance in the sound – and David Fullwood adds in some trumpet lines too, which furthers the jazz elements in the overall sound. Titles include "Hornsman Rock", "Dub In The Heavens (parts 1 & 2)", "Struggle Dub", "Organizer Version", "Olaudah Equiano Dub", "Giza Dub", and "Congo Drum Style". LP, Vinyl record album

Nat BirchallSounds Almighty ... LP
Tradition Disc (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $34.99 49.99
A very different album than usual from the great tenorist Nat Birchall – a set that's no less soulful than his other records, but in a completely different way! The album's a collaboration with producer Al Breadwinner – and has this approach that feels like a lost Jamaican instrumental session from the start of the 70s – as if Nat's playing the role of saxophonist Tommy McCook over some nicely laidback Kingston-styled rhythms! Birchall solos on tenor on most tracks, but also blows a bit of melodica too – and even handles a bit of organ and percussion too – all swept up in a dubby mix handled by Breadwinner, who contributes drums, guitars, and keyboards. There's a bit of trumpet and trombone on the set too, plus baritone sax from Stally – and the quality of the record is excellent, every bit up to the range of the Jamaican legends listed as inspiration on the cover – a lineup that includes McCook, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, and Cedric Brooks. Titles include "In The Hills", "Ancient Wisdom", "Youth Iron Rock", "Freedom Style", "Amlak Dub", "Hail Don D Jr", and "Igziabeher". LP, Vinyl record album

A tremendous album from Air – recorded in their native Chicago, but one of the landmark 70s sessions on Japan's Why Not label! The trio is in wonderful formation here – very focused, with a sharpness that you don't always get in some of their other recordings – a perfect balance between the reeds of Henry Threadgill, bass of Fred Hopkins, and drums of Steve McCall! There's a tightness here that we really love – a bold sense of power that takes the AACM tradition, and fuses it with more of a 70s spiritual jazz approach at times – still experimental enough to live up to Air's reputation, but with occasional rhythmic elements that really push things forward. Tony Allen never lets us down – and even though he recorded this set well into the first decade of his "comeback" years, an album like this still has the same sort of fresh, urgent feel that got him noticed again by a whole new generation of fans! There's definitely lots of Allen's roots with Fela in the music – the kind of Afrobeat grooves that Tony first helped invent back in the 70s – but as with some of his other recent records, there's also a strong willingness to play with tradition, too – mixing in unusual sounds and patterns that really keep things interesting, and which show why Allen's probably been the best ambassador of Afrobeat styles in the 21st Century! Vocals are by Allen and a few other singers over the course of the set – and the band's a super-tight combo with some especially great keyboards from Claude Dibongue. A beautiful record – although one that's tinged with a touch of sadness, given the setting. In what was becoming an unfortunate tradition in their later years, the remaining members of the legendary South African jazz group The Blue Notes join together to mourn the passing of one of their original bandmembers – the great bassist Johnny Dyani, a player whose sound had a key influence on both African and European jazz scenes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The group for this session is reduced to Chris McGregor on piano, Louis Moholo on bass, and Dudu Pukwana on alto and soprano saxes – working together in a beautiful session of tunes that hearken back to the rhythms of the group's roots – while still allowing some of the freer interplay that they discovered in later years. McGregor's piano is especially nice – tinged with sadness and appropriate blue notes – providing a nice undercurrent to the solo work of Pukwana. Maybe one of the most hard-burning performances ever recorded by this legendary South African jazz combo – a set dedicated to trumpeter Mongezi Feza, a key member of the group who'd passed away just a short time before the recording! The session was done in London, right after all four remaining members had come together for a memorial for Mongezi – and throughout the set, you can feel the raw emotion that's driving the performance – bold, freewheeling and very expressive sounds from the lineup of Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, Chris McGregor on piano, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – all players who pick up extra percussion and vocalize at points – almost in the tradition of the AACM, but more emotive too. The format's a trio – Boykin's tenor next to the bass of Alex Wing and drums of Marcus Evans – a modernist saxophone lineup that stretches back to the late 50s experiments of Sonny Rollins, but which is also a perfect vehicle for David's voice here – maybe more unfettered and upfront than on some of his larger projects, and with this deftness that easily marks him as a hell of a soloist in the best modern tenor tradition! One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. Honest Jons (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.99
Other-worldly sounds from a leaf-playing musician from the South American scene – an artist who takes the leaf of a ficus tree, holds it in his mouth, and creates all these unusual sounds that are very much in the territory of some sort of exotic reed instrument! The leaf solos are mixed here with work on acoustic guitar, percussion, and often a bit of organ – all at a level that's completely hypnotic, and which almost feels more like music from the East African scene than the sorts of sounds you'd expect from the city of Quito in Ecuador! And while you might think of these recordings as some sort of sonic novelty, they've got a great amount of feeling and power – a really unexpected depth that comes across right away – maybe even more so if you don't stop to think about the source of the sounds. These vintage recordings are presented here in the best tradition of the Honest Jons label – and titles include "Tondero", "Arbol Frondoso", "Pujili", "Marcu Pungo", "La Naranja", "Negra Piedad", "Simiatu", and "Huashca De Corales". The whole thing's great – and although production has a bit of echo and electric bass, the sound is nice and raw, and hardly pop at all – and in the best End Records tradition, the vocals stay center stage throughout. All of the images are from the mid 60s, and they do a great job of presenting both the spirit at work during gospel masses, and the surrounding community around the music – including a number of great street scenes, and even a few boxing shots as well. The hardcover book is very well-done, in the best Steidl tradition – and is filled with black and white images. Book

Ornette ColemanOrnette Coleman Trio At The Golden Circle Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Important second chapter work from Ornette Coleman – a record that marked a real shift in his sound from the Atlantic Records years – issued by Blue Note at a level that gave the rest of the world a chance to see what Ornette had been cooking up on the underground scene! The album was recorded in Stockholm – in the tradition of European live performances that saw Coleman grow so strongly in the mid 60s – and the tracks are long, free, and full of improvised moments – with Ornette adding in trumpet and violin next to his familiar alto – in a trio with David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums – both fantastic players who can be loose at the right moments, and bring things back at others. Tracks are long and unbridled – with less of the rhythmic changes that you'd hear in work by the classic quartet, and more of a full-on fierce soloing mode. Titles include "Faces & Places", "Dee Dee", and "Dawn". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, Late 60s. New Copy 6LP ... $225.99 229.98
A tremendous package of work from Ornette Coleman – five albums issued under his own name, and one collaboration with Jackie McLean too! First up are At The Golden Circle Vols 1 & 2 – important second chapter work from Ornette Coleman – a record that marked a real shift in his sound from the Atlantic Records years – issued by Blue Note at a level that gave the rest of the world a chance to see what Ornette had been cooking up on the underground scene! Titles include "Snowflakes & Sunshine", "Morning Song", "Faces & Places", "Dee Dee", "Dawn", "The Riddle", and "Antiques". Next is Empty Foxhole – one of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! The group's a trio – with really tremendous work from Charlie Haden on bass, able to match Coleman's energy with effortless ease, and really getting a lot of room to leave his mark on the music – plus the very young (10!) Denardo Coleman, who plays drums here with this stark, simple style that's not only completely unique, but which also leaves a lot of open room left for Haden and Ornette to really stretch out. Ornette plays his usual alto, plus trumpet and violin – and titles include "Good Old Days", "The Empty Foxhole", "Zig Zag", and "Freeway Express". Next is New York Is Now – a pretty bold statement from saxophonist Ornette Coleman, but one that definitely shows his shift in role – from a major force on the LA underground of the early 60s, to an artist who was helping pave the way for a huge wave of growth on the New York downtown scene in years to come! Ornette's at his most late 60s unbridled here – freer than before, and working with a lineup that includes Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – still no piano at all – plus great work from Dewey Redman on tenor, who really burst into new prominence with this album. Ornette plays a bit of violin alongside alto sax – and tracks include "Toy Dance", "Round Trip", "Broad Way Blues", and "We Now Interrupt For A Commercial". Then comes Love Call – a really great late 60s session from Ornette Coleman – one that shows is increasing expansion in sounds and styles, and which also offers a bridge between avant jazz generations too! That bridge comes in the presence of Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – a surprising Coltrane rhythm duo, working here with Ornette's mindblowing work on alto sax, and tenor from a young Dewey Redman – already a crucially intense player here next to Coleman, as both are set free in a group without any piano – that Ornette melding of rhythm and melody, but with a very different vibe than the Atlantic years! Coleman blows trumpet on one tune – and titles include "Love Call", "Airborne", "Check Out Time", and "Open To The Public". The set also includes the album New & Old Gospel – one of Jackie McLean's last "new thing" albums for Blue Note – and a very unique record that features Ornette Coleman on trumpet! The sound here is stark and hard – slight hints of the soulfulness that the "gospel" in the title might imply, mixed with the angular exploratory sound that McLean had been forging at Blue Note during the mid 60s – a wonderful balance that really gives the record a lot of bite! The album's easily one of the most "out" that McLean ever recorded, and the group also includes Lamont Johnson on piano, Scott Holt on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all pushing themselves in the company of the avant jazz giants. Tracks include the extended "Lifeline" suite, which takes up all of side one – plus "Old Gospel" and "Strange As It Seems". LP, Vinyl record album

Ansonia/Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
Some of the best work ever from Puerto Rican percussionist Rafael Cortijo Verdejo – sides recorded in New York for the Ansonia label, at a time when Cortijo's music was even more rootsy than it was a decade before! The material here marks a renewed sense of tradition in players of Cortijo's generation – almost a back-to-basics mode that was their answer to the hybrids of the late 60s – a style that often has Rafael focusing even more on the rhythms at the bottom of the tracks, and leaving behind some of the fuller orchestrations of the 50s. The mighty Kako joins in on percussion on a number of tracks too – and singers include Chivirico Davila and Johnny Vega – on titles that include "Chiviriquiton", "Tele Tele Ya", "La Madama", "Que Linda Te Ves", "Tu Y Tu Guarapo", "Quien Fuel El Primero", "Echando Un Pie", "Alegria Bomba Es", "Dorotea", "Dudando", and "El Negrito Bailador". Tico, Late 60s. Very Good ... $29.99
A really great project from Tito Puente – maybe not his only collaboration with Celia Cruz, but maybe one of the best – a top-to-bottom album of unified vision, topped with sublime vocals from the legendary lady! The set was arranged and produced by Tito – and brings together tunes that are maybe a bit rootsier than some of his other work – that return to tradition that Puente was clamoring for as the 70s began, as a way of shaking off what he felt were the worse influences of the Latin Soul youngsters (not something we agree with ourselves!) The vibe of the album is quite different than its 1970 date – more like something from pre-Castro Havana at times, but with an updated, more sophisticated sense of arrangements and percussion. Titles include "Guiro 6/8", "Chango", "Alguien Vendra", "Cuyi", "Sahara", "Elegua", and "Salsa De Tomate". LP, Vinyl record album

The first big Paul Desmond solo album of the 60s – and a standout set that's very much in the tradition of his best work on RCA! This rare side was cut for Warner Brothers during a time when they were taking a brief dip into jazz – and it's a rarely-heard set that features Jim Hall on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Percy Heath on bass, all backing up Paul with a spare "after hours" sound that's a marked change from his tightly woven work with Brubeck. Desmond's alto is full of possibilities here – working wonders with familiar tunes like "Greensleeves", "You Go To My Head", "Time After Time", and "East Of The Sun" – as well as with the John Lewis modern number "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West". Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 18.99
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together". A classic album from this great group from Ghana – one that probably got more exposure than usual, thanks to the fact that they were taken under the wing of Brian Eno, who produced the album, in a tradition that would stretch back to Ginger Baker's work with Fela! The group have a great sound here – bold, fast-moving rhythms – with elements in Eno's production that almost recall his work with the Talking Heads – especially his way of bringing out the most robust elements in the basslines and percussion! The whole thing is done with a great balance – nicely respectful, but also with a slight updating of the sonic quality – yet never in a way that's got the more commercial inclinations of the world music boom to come. There's some cool moogy moments at time – almost bursting out of the mix in the way that Eno's electronics would pepper some of his early work with Roxy Music – and titles include "Gbenta", "Something Lefeh-O", "Blinking Eyes", and "Moonlight Africa". Philips, 1963. Near Mint- ... $8.99
A rare 60s meeting of groovy talents from both sides of the Atlantic – and a record that matches the trumpet of Dizzy Gillespie with the hiply swinging vocals of The Double Six Of Paris! The group were a wonderfully groovy precursor to the Swingle Singers – and sung in a scatting approach to jazz vocals that was very much in the tradition of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but also drew inspiration from the earlier work of Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, and others. Their sound is great – much more 60s groovy than some other vocal groups – and pairing them with Dizzy gives this record an added punch that some of their other sessions are missing! Backing is small combo throughout – with either Bud Powell or Kenny Barron on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and James Moody on tenor – and with the presence of Diz, most of the material here is of bop orientation – taken at a fast and lively clip! A double-length set from Chicago tenorist Chris Greene – but a package that may well not be enough to hold all the new ideas in his music! We've really watched Chris grow strongly over the past few years – and with this wonderfully well-crafted, rich-voiced album, he steps forward to a level that rivals some of the much bigger saxophone talents recording these days for labels like High Note or Criss Cross! Greene's always had a deep tone in his horns – one that draws from a Chicago tradition, but inflects it with some of the more contemporary modes of later players on the scene – like Eric Alexander, who Chris might be approaching with this set. The range of rhythms and song styles is great – never gimmicky, but expanding past standard expectations – so that Greene's group is playing Coltrane and Wayne Shorter one minute, then Martin Denny the next, then Ed Motta, then a huge batch of their own great compositions as well. Instrumentation is simple – Chris on saxes, plus piano or keyboards, bass, and drums – but there's some wide voices here that really make the album compelling – and the longer length very necessary to contain it all. Titles include "Firecracker", "Deluge", "Day of Honor", "Divers", "Solution", "Papuera", "Clean & Clear", "Institutional Samba", and "Nostalgia In Times Square". CD

Titles include "Changing The Scene", "Merciful", "Fly By Night", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Spank", and "Tons & Tons Of BS". CD

Universal (France), 2010s. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A mindblowing journey in sound – a dip into the archives of French composer Pierre Henry – the postwar master of electronics and musique concrete, and an artist who was still very active in the final years of his life! The material here was all either recorded or reworked in Henry's own studio during the last few years of his time on the planet – with some tracks that revisit important early compositions, but with a different sonic perspective – mixed with a few new pieces that really continue that wellspring of recording that Henry was doing from the mid 90s onward! There's a wonderful array of sonic elements throughout – plenty of electronics, compelling tape and analog sounds, and lots more that we're hard pressed to figure out – in the best tradition of Pierre's music. Titles include "Variance (remix de Variations)", "Rock Electronique/La Reine Verte", "Prologue/Messe Pour Le Temps Present", "Danse/Mouvement Rythme Etude", "Final/Utopia Hip Hop", "Tokyo 2002", "Machine Danse", and "Tunne De La Mort/Le Fil De La Vie". Ekapa/Enja (Germany), 1985. Used ... $9.99
A real standout for Dollar Brand – and one of those few records that features him letting loose with a slightly larger jazz group – in this case a septet of American players that features some great horn work by Ricky Ford on tenor, Carlos Ward on alto, Charles Davis on baritone, and Dick Griffin on trombone! As you might expect from the presence of these giants, the set's got a depth that recalls some of the more spiritual sounds of the 70s – such as you'd find on Muse Records, and maybe even on Strata East! The sound is nice and angular – steeped in the Africanist tradition of Ibrahim's earlier work, but coming off even better thanks to the twists and turns of the horns. Titles include "The Mountain", "The Wedding", "Sameeda", and "Mandela". CD

Rare Japanese-only session by the monster bassist of The Headhunters – a killer set that masterfully toes the line between heavy jazz funk and a looser soul jazz vibe! Paul Jackson leads a group that includes fellow Headhunter Bennie Maupin, and other jazz funk legends like Herbie Hancock, Alphonse Mouzon, Webster Lewis, and Ray Obiedo. Includes some nice vocals by Jackson, too, sweetly backed by Japanese singers Yuka Kamebuchi and Mari Kaneko. Excellent funky tunes in the best 70s Herbie Hancock tradition, especially the great "Funk Times Three", which starts with a nice break, and the cuts "Tiptoe Thru The Ghetto" and "Burning In The Heat (Of Your Love)" and the 2 part "Black Octopus". Black Fire/Strut (UK), 1973. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
A much-needed slice of work from Juju – the group who later transformed into spiritual funk ensemble Oneness Of Juju! Juju only recorded two full albums in the early 70s, so this unissued live set is a key addition to their catalog – and the whole thing's got this bold quality that's much more jazz-based, and often more avant than the group's later work – more in line with work in the tradition of the AACM, or some of the earliest loft jazz talents. No surprise, the set was recorded at Ornette Coleman's space on the lower east side in the early 70s – with the mighty Plunky Nakbinde on saxes and flute, sounding a lot more searing than any of his records from the 80s onward – plus Babatunde on percussion, Lon Moshe on vibes and flute, and Al-Hammel Rasul on keyboards. There's a bit of vocalizations, and lots of percussion from group members too – and the sound is very spiritual, with touches of more percussive Afro-centric playing. Includes a great version of Eddie Palmieri's "Azucar Para Ti", plus "At Least We Have A Horizon Now", and "Live Mozambique". Includes unreleased tracks "Thembi" and "Rosalie/Juju's Door". An incredibly soulful set of piano tracks – very much in the best tradition of work by George Cables or Joe Bonner, both of whom also recorded for the Why Not label at the same time! Japanese pianist Fumio Karashima has this fantastically rhythmic approach to the keys of the piano – not funky, but this magical flow that's sometimes modal, sometimes more in his own groove – spun out over some beautifully long tracks on the set! The pianist is working here with drummer Jimmy Hopps and bassist Isao Suzuki – and Hopps' light, lyrical touch on the kit (a bit like Billy Higgins at his best) is a perfect foil for Karashima's stretched-out piano lines – darkly modal, with a searching soulful quality that's proof that the Why Not label was one of the best proponents of the post-Coltrane sound of the 70s! Beautiful early work from John Klemmer – one of the most under-rated talents of his generation, and a great player who frequently gets overlooked because of his later, smoother work. This album is Klemmer's first – recorded with a soulful Chicago tenor sound, touched with some of the freedoms of the late 60s Cadet Records scene. The approach is a bit like Eddie Harris at his best – with Klemmer rolling out soulful, stretched out notes over backing by a Harris-inspired rhythm section that includes Melvin Jackson on bass, Wilbur Cambell on drums, and Jodie Christian on piano. The groove is very solid, very in the pocket – and Klemmer blows in a tradition that includes Frank Strozier and Eric Alexander – 2 other players who've made a strong contribution to the Chicago scene. The classic debut of a young Wynton Marsalis – cut after a stretch when Wynton was working with Art Blakey, and had really sharpened his chops! The record's a wonderful return to straight jazz tradition for Columbia – but it also has some modern moments too – proof that the younger generation of 80s jazz players still had plenty of fresh sounds to bring to the table. A pair of overlooked female soul gems – back to back on a single CD! The first album is It Must Be Love – sweet late 70s modern soul from Alton McClain & Destiny – a great little female vocal trio with a sound that ranges from lightly funky with jazzy flourishes, to soaringly soulful! The group kind of follow in a tradition started by Honeycone and First Choice, and improved upon by The Emotions – and like that latter group, the girls move from the easier disco tracks that you'd normally expect, into a range of soulful styles that all come off equally well with their vocal technique. A key recording from one of our favorite tenor talents of the 80s – the amazing Ralph Moore, a player who really carries on a strong legacy from the 60s work of Hank Mobley! Like Mobley, Moore's got a very rich-voiced sound that's steeped in tradition, but which is also never afraid to take chances too – a way of handling the tenor that few of his contemporaries could match, which is probably why Ralph's presence really upped the ante on so many dates at the time as a sideman. He's even better as a leader, though, and this standout set for Landmark is a real gem – a record filled with freely creative energy throughout, and a never-ending sense of soul – as Moore's tenor is set up nicely in a core group with Benny Green on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums – the latter of whom brings some of the same magic to this set that Billy Higgins did to Blue Note in the 60s. Some of the heaviest work to come from the African scene of the 70s – the initial offering of the Ngozi Family – a group who clearly take strong inspiration from the Cream years of the UK scene, but who also come across with a grittier, punkier vibe overall – thanks to lean, stripped-down instrumentation and some very sharp drums! The drums rattle out underneath the magnificent fuzzy guitar lines in the lead – almost with this compressed quality that recalls Thin Lizzy at their funkier moments – but much more raw, stripped-down, and unpolished – so that the English language lyrics burst out with a really biting sound! The record's one of the first in the Zamrock tradition, and is still one of the best – a set that deserves to be in any collection of hard rock, proto-punk, and even funk rock from the 70s. The album was recorded in the great tradition of "musicans in prison" albums, like those by The Escorts in the early 70s, and it features an incredibly soulful band made up of jazz musicians in lockdown at the Ohio State Penitentiary during the mid 70s! We don't recognize any of the names on the album, but the players work with a hell of a lot of soul and spirit – on longer tracks that almost have the feel of 70s work by The Pharoahs or Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. The real change, though, is the production – which is totally fresh, mixing in a host of elements that Omar's never had in his music before, from bossa organ to snapping junglist beats, and even a bit of dub! Includes a version of "Be Thankful For What You Got", done as a duet with Erykah Badu – plus "Essensual", "Sylsete", "Goodness", "In The Morning", "Emporium", and "To The Top". CD

Emmanuelle ParreninMaison Rose (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
CBS/Souffle Continu (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99 About October 14, 2022 (delayed)
An album of fragile beauty and buried darkness – in a space that's somewhere between the work of Nico and Brigitte Fontaine, but a fair bit sweeter overall! Emmanuelle Parrenin sings here in a timeless style that might almost be called folksy – especially in the return to tradition styles of the UK 70s scene – but it's also got a slightly headier feel overall, almost trippy at times, with a sense of crumbling innocence that's further underscored by spare instrumentation that includes hurdy-gurdy, spinet, and dulcimer. Most tunes just feature vocals and some combination of these instruments – and a few numbers feature slightly larger backing, but never a full group mode. Titles include "Ritournelle", "Leiturgie", "Copraze", "Lecharpe De Soie", "Ce Matin A Fremontel", and "Belle Virginie". Amazing vinyl reissue – very heavy cover and vinyl, and beautifully done overall! LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Potes, edHamburger Eyes – Inside Burgerworld (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2007. New Copy ... $8.99 35.00
If you find the image on the cover as striking as we do, wait until you see what's inside – page after page of brilliant black and white photographs, all taken from the long-running Hamburger Eyes publication – still somewhat young when this book came out, but already clearly a leading voice in 21st Century photography! The images vary wildly, but they all have a unifying vibe – material by a range of different photographers who seem to capture a special moment on the street, or an oddity in reality – keen work by a lineup that includes Mark Murrmann, Ryan Furtado, Matt Weber, Ted Pushinsky, Boogie, Vic Blue, and many others – a band of disparate artist who seem to have a great unifying thread in their work. The book is lovingly done in the best tradition of Powerhouse Press – hardcover, very little text, just page after page of explosive images! Book

James & Bobby PurifyI'm Your Puppet – The Complete Bell Recordings 1966 to 1969 (James & Bobby Purify/Pure Sound Of The Purifys/singles/bonus tracks) ... CD
Bell/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 24.99
The complete works of this incredible 60s soul duo – a 2CD package that features both their albums for the Bell Records label, lots of contemporaneous 45s, and even some unreleased tracks too! James & Bobby Purify followed in a tradition that was strongly started by Sam & Dave – the two-male soul duo, with both voices coming in on the lead, breaking apart as the tracks progressed, and crossing back and forth, for a fuller sound that often made for a more dynamic approach than with a single singer! James & Bobby had a wonderful sound – slower and deeper than Sam & Dave, with plenty of touches of southern soul, and a tendency to use a nice heavy beat, even in their mellower tracks – which really makes this work burn with a deep soul intensity. The 2CD set features 38 tracks in all – the full titles from the albums James & Bobby Purify and Pure Sound Of The Purifys, plus singles, unreleased tracks, and more – titles that include "The Weeper", "Section C", "So Many Reasons", "I Take What I Want", "Soothe Me", "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby", "We're Finally Gonna Make It", "Do Unto Me", "Hitch Hike", "Knock On Wood", "So Many Reasons", "Wish You Didn't Have To Go", "Shake A Tail Feather", "You Left The Water Running", "I'm Your Puppet", "Last Piece Of Love", "Everybody Needs Somebody", "I Don't Know What It Is You Got", "Just Like Old Times", and "I Was Born To Lose Out". Mercelo Quantanilha & Vamia AbreuPierrot & Colombina ... CD
YB Music (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $14.99
A warmly intimate tribute to the carnaval tradition – but one delivered with the quiet sensitivity of a bossa session! Mercelo Quantanilha and Vamia Abreu sing both in duet and solo modes here – running through a long tradition of Brazilian songs on the carnaval – penned by Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, Carlinhos Brown, Vinicius De Moraes, Ary Barroso, and others. Instrumentation includes a fair bit of acoustic guitar, as well as vibes, harmonica, and percussion – used sparingly, but warmly, almost in the style of work on the Biscoito Fino label. Titles include "Que Te Viu Que Te Ve", "Manha De Carnaval", "Lamento De Carnaval", "Quando O Carnaval Chegar", "Noite Dos Mascarados", and "No Cardao Da Saideira". CD

Enrico Rava & Fred HerschSong Is You ... LP
ECM (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99 On January 13, 2023
Trumpeter Enrico Rava was a man of bold sounds in his youth – but as the years have gone on, he's definitely become one of those players who's really learned that less is more – serving up well-chosen, well-pointed moments on his horn that can make a record like this so great! Pianist Fred Hersch is in relatively familiar territory – especially on some of the darker, moodier passages on the set – but he also seems set free a bit from his conventions at times by Rava, as the pair work more in sound painting territory than some overly musical pursuit on some of the album's best tracks – definitely in the best ECM tradition, but very strongly flavored by the individuality of the two improvisers. Titles include "Child's Song", "The Trial", "Improvisation", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "The Song Is You", and "Misterioso". LP, Vinyl record album

Lou RawlsAll Things In Time ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A killer – and one of our favorite Philly International albums ever! This is the album that broke Lou Rawls back into the mainstream for the smooth 70s – retuning his incredible voice with waves of soul and strings in the Gamble & Huff tradition – and giving him a whole new voice than on his Capitol recordings! The album will forever be remembered for the seminal single "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" – but it's filled with other great bits, including"Groovy People", a wonderful jazzy groover, and "You're The One", and "Lets Fall In Love All Over Again". ✨✧ Turley RichardsExpressions (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
One of a handful of great, but somewhat obscure albums by Turley Richards – a singer/songwriter who gets some very strong handling in the best Warner tradition of the time – which means that the label really lets Richard open up and do his own thing throughout the set, with just the right help along the way! Most of the tracks are Turley's own, and have some instrumentation that starts with his own acoustic guitar, then expanded with slight arrangements from Richards, Lou Merenstein, and George Butcher – which include a bit of studio help from Jim Horn on flute and Danny Kortchmar on guitar. Titles include the nice "Beautiful Country", which starts with a very live-sounding drum break that's very tasty – and other tracks have almost a soulful vibe, and include "Nightmare", "Place For My Mind", "Child Of Mine", "Virginia Woman", "My World Is Empty Without You", "It's All Over Now Baby Blue", and "Stoned On Love". Max RoachLift Every Voice and Sing ... CD
Koch/Atlantic, 1971. Used ... $6.99 9.99
A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Like Capra Black, this set features Harper's sharp and soulful tenor up against a choir of voices – blowing on hard-hitting soul jazz arrangements handled by Max Roach, of the style he used on some of his classic early 60s sides for Impulse and Candid. The tracks are long, Harper's in top form, and the group also includes Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet and George Cables on piano – ultra hip cats, always! Cuts include "Motherless Child", "Let Thy People Go", and "Troubled Waters. CD

RufusParty Til You're Broke ... LP
MCA, 1981. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Great later work from Rufus – working here without Chaka Khan on vocals, but sounding even jazzier as a result! There almost seems to be more emphasis on the instrumentation than before – and the album's got a warmly funky groove that definitely carries on the 70s Rufus tradition, but cleans things up a bit for the 80s generation – especially lean on the rhythms and the keyboards! Tony Maiden and David Wolinski handle the vocals, often in a compressed way that's mixed right down in the music – but the real charm here comes from the rhythms and the sweet jazzy licks in the grooves. Titles include "Tonight We Love", "Can I Show You", "What Is It", "Afterwards", "We Got The Way", "Party Til You're Broke", "Love Is Taking Over", and "Secret Love". LP, Vinyl record album
