VariousLanguages Of Tambores – A Spiritual Journey Through The Cultural Heritage Of Drums – Presented By Gabriele Poso ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 90s/2000s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 28.98
The drums do plenty of talking here – in a wonderful set that looks at the return of deeper rhythms and percussion to the global house music underground! Just at a point when some pretenders were trying to claim too-strong influences from Cuba, Africa, and other deeper cultures – artists like these came into the fray and reminded us that if you're going to make a musical statement, you better have the sound to back it up – which they did wonderfully, with the kind of creative reworkings of percussive modes that you'll hear on this set! Gabriele Poso did a really wonderful job of choosing the tracks here – a no-nonsense batch of work that will make you throw away every "fake" Afro-remix you've got in your collection. Titles include "Naja" by Guem, "Cafe De Ochun" by Gabriele Poso, "Injection Of Blackness" by Malika B & Dave Hucker, "Polyrhythm Jizm (Lay-Far edit)" by Free Association, "Long Distance Lover" by Babatunde Olatunji, "Tembandumba" by Toto La Momposina, "Drum It Up" by Dudu Tucci, "Coming Home" by Mustapha Tetty Addy, "Ven Francisco" by Silvestre Mendez, "Guiro Elegua" by Bobby Matos, and "Ninu Opon Ori Tiwa (Kiko Navarro re-edit)" by Sola Akingbola. ✨✧ VariousMaiden Voyage – A Journey Into The World Of Soul & Boogie ... CD
Compost (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer club cuts from the 70s and 80s, chosen by the Compost crew – all in support of their long-running Maiden Voyage club night! The Maiden Voyage vibe is quite different than the usual Compost groove – much more soul-based, and often in a mellow or midtempo mode – just the right balance of jazz and funk in the rhythms, with plenty of space for a soulful singer to take over the lead – and with a style that's much more sophisticated than mainstream disco! There's plenty of cuts on here from the best late 70s modern soul years – and even when the names are familiar, the tracks are often a bit more obscure – lesser-known gems brought together with a beautiful flare, in a package that's easily one of the best groovers we've heard in a long time! Titles include "Love Is On The One" by Xavier, "Love You Anyway" by Cameo, "Lihue" by Nohelani Cypriano, "Believe In Yourself" by Roy Ayers, "Georgy Porgy (disco)" by Toto, "Lovin Fever" by High Inergy, "She's Gone" by Norman Conners, "Very Special" by Debra Laws, "I Want Your Love" by James Mason, "I Want To Thank You" by Alicia Myers, and "Tenderness" by Diana Ross. ✨✧ VariousToo Slow To Disco Presents Yacht Soul – The Cover Versions ... CD
How Do You Are, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly cool collection – one that offers up all sorts of weird and wonderful soul music covers of mainstream mellow 70s hits – new versions of the famous tunes that pull them strongly over to the world of R&B, often with results that are better than the original versions! The set is both a great demonstration of how much soul there was lurking in the original AOR productions of the mid 70s, and how strongly those currents could be unlocked even more in the right hands – as you'll hear in these sublime takes on tunes by Hall & Oates, Toto, Seals & Crofts, The Doobie Brothers, and other 70s pop giants. Titles include "Dirty Work" by Pointer Sisters, "Minute By Minute" by Peabo Bryson, "Georgie Porgy" by Side Effect, "He's Gone" by Dee Dee Bridgewater, "Summer Breeze" by Main Ingredient, "Lazy Nina" by Greg Phillinganes, "In The Way" by Brothers Johnson, "This Is It" by Millie Jackson, "Takin It To The Streets" by Quincy Jones, "I Hope You'll Be Very Unhappy Without Me" by Tavares, "God Only Knows" by Betty Lavette, "Let Em In" by Billy Paul, and "A Love Of Your Own" by The Ebonys. ✨✧ VariousYAORcht Rock (deluxe edition) ... CD
Warner (Australia), 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A smooth set of grooves from the 70s – just the kind of cool compressed pop that used to fill the 70s AM radio airwaves when we were kids – and which sounds even better in a hip compilation like this! The package doesn't go for easy hits – and instead digs deep into the treasure trove of 70s album-oriented rock – to find cuts that really glow anew in each others' company, filled with surprises that we never would have expected! Some folks have taken to calling these sounds "yacht rock" – but to us, the sound is pure 70s at its best – a sublime batch of tracks that includes "Georgy Porgy" by Toto, "Wait A Little While" by Kenny Loggins, "Here To Stay" by Boz Scaggs, "Fazon" by Sopwith Camel, "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me" by Average White Band, "Tranquilo" by Carly Simon, "Nightmoves" by Michael Franks, "Steal Away" by Robbie Dupree, "Tin Man" by America, "She's Gone" by Hall & Oates, "Midnight Prowl" by JD Souther, and "Ride Like The Wind" by Christopher Cross. Special 2CD package – comes with a bonus CD mix of these grooves by The Rainbow Connection! CD

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeNuovo Cinema Paradiso (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
GDM/AMS (Italy), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A famous later moment from the great Ennio Morricone – a score that's almost as famous as the film for which it was written – and music that's as filled with a sense of timelessness and sentiment! The orchestrations are lush, but never overtone – and the strings are beautifully punctuated by piano lines, acoustic guitar, and haunting woodwind solos – very evocative, in the best slow-building Morricone way! Titles include the classic title theme – plus "Maturita", "Infanzia E Maturita", "Prima Gioventu", "Fuga, Ricerca E Ritorno", "DalSex Appeal Al Primo Fellini", "Toto E Alfredo", and "Per Elena". Tullio De PiscopoTullio De Piscopo Vol 2 ... CD
Carosello/New Platform (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
The legendary Italian drummer Tullio De Piscopo is at his most dynamic here – effortlessly blending funky jazz, soul, and bits of prog – all at that level that soon made him a legend in the clubs! Tullio's a hell of a drummer at the core – you'll know that if you've ever heard his solo work – and here, he uses his masterful style on the kit alongside bits of vocals, guitar, and bass – plus some great work on saxes and flute from Larry Nocella and Giorgio Baiocco! There's some added percussion at many points too – and Tullio handles rototom, congas, and timpani next to his work on drums – stretching out with some help on arrangements from jazz talents Sante Palumbo and Mario Rusca too. Titles include the longer "Concerto Per Napoli", plus "Afelio", "Fiesta", "Sipario", "Funiculi Funicula", "Periello", "Guainella", "O Stadio", and "Il Mondo Gira". CD

VariousMr Bongo Record Club – Vol 4 ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $19.99 23.99
Maybe the coolest entry so far in this excellent series – and proof that the Mr Bongo label has gone much farther in recent years than it ever did in the past! Years back, Bongo was known as a hotbed of Latin and Brazilian music – but the sounds here are also rare funk and soul, other global modes, and even a few contemporary touches too – all served up with the care and class that we used to love from a Mr Bongo DJ night in London – way back when we used to make it to events like that! There's no need to know anything about the music in advance – just let the record work its magic, as it takes you through cuts that include "Paradise Island" by Azwon, "Eyes Growing Wider" by Carnival, "Throwing Stones (Kenny Dope mix)" by James Reese & The Progressions, "Amanha O Tempo Muda" by Lincoln, "Mama Matotoya" by Vikings, "Sputla" by Teaspoon Ndelu, "Al Elnim" by Hamlet Minassian, "Selfportait" by Matty, "Extralude (Wyndham Earl's more than an interlude rmx)" by Wax Machine, "Lotus 72 D" by Ze Roberto, "Sonho Lindo" by Don Ricardo, "The Peruvian" by DJ Format & The Simonsound, and "Don't Stop This Train" by Cindy & The Playmates. ✨✧ All That JazzGhibli Jazz Live ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 2011. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nicely expanded version of the great Ghibli Jazz concept – delivered here in a live setting that's maybe got even more brilliance than the studio albums! There's a dynamic sense of presentation right from the start, partly the sense of the concert space in the mix, partly the energy from the crowd – and if anything, these tunes are more groovers than the previous studio albums – and topped with really great vocals from Yuriko Kuwahara. Titles include "Tonari No Totoro", "Kaze No Toorimichi", "Mononokehime", "Itsumo Nandodemo", "Jinsei No Merry Go Round", and "Umi No Mieru Machi". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ All That JazzKaze To Mori No Jazz – Ghibli Jazz 3 (Jazz With The Wind & The Woods) ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
All That Jazz expand their sound here, as you might guess from the winds and wood hinted in the title – using saxes and a bit of strings in a great way over their surprisingly dynamic grooves – almost at a level that seeks to link the club jazz modes of the Tokyo scene with some of the thematic elements of the world of Studio Ghibli! The melodies are as spare and compelling as before, but the presentation is nicely full – light strings and other orchestrations in the background – while the core energy comes from the piano, heavy bass, and dancing drums – on titles that include "Kazeno Toorimichi", "Kazeno Tanino Maushika, "Umino Miero Machi", "Kimio Nosete", "Monokoke Hime", "Ano Natuse", "Tonarino Totoro", and "Ashitakasekki".
