Toquinho50 Anos De Carreira (DVD) ... DVD
Deck Disk (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $13.99
A beautiful celebration of 50 years of music from Toquinho – but one that doesn't just live in the past, and instead shows us all the growth he's experienced over the decades! Toquinho first came on the scene as a famous partner of poet/singer Vinicius De Moraes – a great late-life collaborator who helped Vinicius keep new ideas flowing, after famous 60s material with Baden Powell and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Yet after the passing of that famous force in Brazilian music, Toquinho really seemed to hit his stride – with vocals that only deepened with maturity, and a way of using his strong talents on acoustic guitar at a level that was so different than the bossa generation. Here, you'll hear Toquinho in all his glory – a warmly collaborative setting that also features contributions from Anna Setton, Paulo Ricardo, Tie, Mutinho, and Veronica Ferriani – younger artists who've continued to be inspired by the singer's legacy. Titles include "Made In Coracao", "Que Maravilha", "Carolina Carol Bela", "A Noite", "Tarde Em Itapoa", "Aquarela", "Samba Pra Vinicius", and "A Tonga Da Mironga Do Kabulete". DVD features bonus "making of" material, and some other bonus bits too! DVD

✨✧ ToquinhoToquinho ... CD
RGE/Mr Bongo (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful early album from Brazilian guitarist/singer Toquinho – done before his famous collaborations with Vincius De Moraes, and with a very different groove! The record features guest appearances by Jorge Ben on two tracks – and much of the record seems to have Toquinho absorbing a bit of Ben's spirit – using lively samba rhythms on some of the best tracks, which creates a groove that's really unexpected – and which makes the album a real standout in his catalog! Toquinho's guitar work is wonderful in the setting – maybe even more compelling in its deftness, and no less full of feeling – and titles include a killer reading of "Que Maravilha", done with Jorge Ben, who also guests on "Carolina Carol Bela" – and other titles include a version of "Bachianinha No 1" with Paulinho Nogueira; a great cover of Ben's "Zana"; and the tracks "Evocacao A Jacob", "Chuva Na Praia De Juqui", "Evocacao De Jacob", "De Ontem Pra Hoje", and "Na Agua Negra Da Lagoa". ✨✧ VariousBrazilian Beats N Pieces – The Best Of Brazilian Beats ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/2007. Used ... $7.99
A great reworking of the classic Brazilian Beats series – one that features 32 tracks from the previous 6 volumes, all selected and remixed live by Phat Kev! The package is kind of a Brazilian mixtape overall – of the sort that were floating around a few years back in the underground, but done here in a tight, professional style that's seriously funky – blending older Brazilian beats with contemporary production modes, but always in a way that keeps the spirit of the originals intact! Kev doesn't do too much to the core tunes – but does have a way of stepping lively from one number to the next – and titles in the mix include "Eu Sou Mais Eu" by Anna Mazzotti, "O Journaleiro" by Toni Tornado, "La Lupita" by Nico Gomez, "A Festa" by Silvio Cesar, "Nao Aquento Voce" by Trio Esperanca, "Marcos" by Quarteto Uai, "Hot Pants Road" by Boogaloo Combo, "Carolina" by Seu Jorge, "Take Me Back To Piaui" by Juca Chaves, "Deus Me Faca Funky" by Skowa & Mafia, "Summertime" by Rosina De Valencia, "Carolina Carol Bela" by Jorge Ben & Toquinho, "Samblues" by Sambalanca Trio, and "Barumba" by Dom Salvador. ✨✧ VariousO Bem Amado – Trilha Sonora Original Da Novela ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Extremely compelling work by the team of Toquinho & Vinicius! The album's a soundtrack to the Globo TV show O Bem Amado – and it's one of a number of albums that were recorded for Brazilian soap operas during the early 70s, most of which (including this one!) feature rare work that didn't appear on other LPs. The arrangements are great – handled on one track by Rogerio Duprat – and the record's got a baroque feel that reminds us of the best work on EMI/Odeon from the same time. A few tracks feature vocals by Maria Creusa, some by Toquinho, either solo or with Vinicius, and one by the Coral Som Livre. Includes the great groovy "Paiol De Polvora", plus "Meu Pai Oxala", "Cotidiano No 2", "Veja Voce", "Patota De Ipanema", and "No Colo Da Serra". CD
