Toots ThielemansCaptured Alive (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Choice/Candid, 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
One of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded by the legendary Toots Thielemans – a small combo session that stands in great contrast to much of the bigger studio work he was doing in the 70s! Despite the title, the record's a studio one and not a concert – but it's got a relaxed intimacy that's really great, and features plenty of long-drawn lines from Thielemans on the harmonica, all played with the sort of tone and phrasing that made him one of the greatest jazz players ever on the instrument. The rest of the group features Joanne Brackeen on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – all quite hip players that help Toots avoid the traps of sentimentality and commercialism that could sometimes hurt his work. Titles include "Dr Pretty", "I Never Told You", "Giant Steps", and "Snooze". CD features the bonus tracks "Stella By Starlight" and "Revol". CD

Toots ThielemansContrasts ... LP
Command, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
Toots at his grooviest – working in a nice and light setting that brings out the best of his unique style! Don't be put off by the fact that this one's on the easy listening label Command, because it's got a very jazzy finish – and really allows Toots the space to inflect his sound at levels that he often never got to do freely until later 70s sides. The tracks are all short, and include some familiar covers – but Toots transforms them with magical work on guitar, harmonica, and whistle! Titles include "Sweet & Lovely", "So Nice", "Big Boy", "Yesterday & Today", and "Bluesette". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Toots ThielemansGuitar & Strings... And Things ... LP
Command, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
A pretty great album of groovy tracks from Toots! This one's less in a straight jazz mode than it is in kind of a jazzy easy style – similar to some of Gabor Szabo's work on Impulse from the same time, with a breezy blend of orchestrations, light instrumental solos on flute, vibes, and guitar, and some occasional wordless vocals folded into the mix. The arrangements are light and focused on a groove at all times – with lots of bossa bits and sountracky moments. Titles include "So What's New?", "Stuck UP", "Wave", "Sunny", "Quarter To Five", and "A Man & A Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Toots ThielemansToots Thielemans Live ... LP
Inner City, 1982. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A wonderful live date from the legendary Toots Thielemans – and one that's got some especially nice electric piano interplay with his famous guitar and harmonica! There's a bit more of an edge to this record than some of Toots' more polished outings for bigger labels – and we really appreciate that quality of the record, as it gets back to that fresh, unique tone that Thielemans first brought to jazz in the 50s and 60s – which on other records of this vintage wasn't always recorded with this much soul. Players include Rob Franken on keyboards and Joop Scholten on guitar – and titles include "Waltz For Sonny", "That Misty Red Animal", "Blue Lady", "Bluesette", "C To G Jam Blues", "Dirty Old Man", and "Nice To Be Around". A groovy meeting of talents, both Brazilian and Scandinavian – but with a bossa-inflected feel that definitely lives up to the Rio setting of the concert! The lineup features harmonica from Toots Thielemans, accordion from Sivuca, and a great jazzy setting. Titles include "Vai Passar", "Imagine", "Pela Luz Dos Olhos Teus", "Out Of Nowhere", "Sandra", and "I Just Called To say I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

Toots Thielemans with Rob FrankenToots Thielemans Meets Rob Franken – The Studio Sessions 1973 to 1983 (3CD set) ... CD
Dutch Jazz Archive (Netherlands), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $21.99 34.99
A treasure trove of barely-heard music from two of the most unique players on the European scene of the 70s – Fender Rhodes giant Rob Franken, and harmonica jazz maestro Toots Thielemans – two players who sound better here in the company of each other than they do on their own! Thielemans had been making music for many years before these sessions – but as the 70s hit, the electric piano really opened up new colors and tones in his instrument – heard most famously on his performances with Quincy Jones, and some of his soundtrack material – but actually even more amazing here alongside Franken – as the combination of chromatic harmonica and Fender Rhodes is completely sublime! The tracks were recorded as part of a series of sound library sessions that Rob organized – titled Functional Music – and the huge set features material from a number of different sessions done under that aegis. CD1 features 20 tracks under the heading of Nature Boy from 1981 and 1982 – with Franken on Rhodes, Toots on harmonica, Theo De Jong on bass, and Bruno Castellucci on drums. CD2 is titled Absorbed Love – and features six tracks from 1978 with Toots and Franken – and James Leary on bass, Eddie Marshall on drums, and tenor and flute on a few cuts from the great Ferdinand Povel – followed by fifteen more titles from 1974 with a different Thielemans/Franken lineup that features Joop Scholten on guitar, Wim Essed on bass, and Peter Ypma on drums. CD3 is titled Together, from 1973 – and mostly features Thielemans on guitar and harmonica, Franken on Fender Rhodes, Rob Langereis on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums. 59 tracks in all – and a detailed book of notes! Command, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovy Toots – just the way we like him, with a bit of jazz, a bit of easy, and some cool 60s approaches to his sound! The album has Toots on both harmonica and guitar – working in a stripped-down small combo setting that has some really surprising elements, like piano and organ by Dick Hyman, additional piano by Herbie Hancock, and some added guitar on rhythm on a number of tracks. Tunes are great – and even familiar numbers are handled in a light and pixieish style that really gets the best out of Toots' sound, and which makes the album swing nicely overall. Titles include "Preachmanship", "I Can't Get Started", "Secret Love", "Blues Talk", "Lover Man", and "Whispering". LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful pairing – the keyboards of Bill Evans and harmonica of Toots Thielemans – presented here in a space that marks the record as one of the best from both players in the 70s! Some tunes are sad and blue, and very spare – others a bit more upbeat and lyrical, almost taking us back to Bill's more sprightly modes of the early 60s – and the clear, clean sound offers up the best tones from both players in a perfect space. Other musicians include Marc Johnson on bass, Eliot Zigmund on drums, and Larry Schneider on flute, tenor, and soprano sax – and Evans plays a bit of electric piano in addition to acoustic, something we always love! Titles include "I Do It For Your Love", "The Days Of Wine & Roses", "Jesus' Last Ballad", "The Other Side Of Midnight", "Blue & Green", and "Tomato Kiss". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest albums by Toots that we've ever heard – a groovy set of tunes recorded in the 60s, with Dick Hyman on organ! Hyman's lean and fluid tone is a real wonder – working better here than even on his own albums, and coming into play magically with Toots – who whistles at the same time he's playing the guitar, making for an incredibly cool whistle/organ/guitar groove that's totally outta site! Tracks include "The Valley Whistler", "Wives & Lovers", "Indian Nuts", "Falling In Love With Love", "Marionette", and a version of "Bluesette" recorded earlier in Sweden. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Toots ThielemansToots Thielemans In Tokyo ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Toots Thielemans as he was meant to be heard – live and unfettered, in a setting that lets his harmonica work do far more than just color in larger arrangements for more famous artists! Despite Thielemans' genius on countless studio sessions over the years, we've really been most impressed by his ability to improvise as a jazz musician on the harmonica – a talent that few other players have ever been able to approach, and even when they do so, only end up sounding a bit too "Toots-like". The setting is laidback and easygoing – with tracks that run from 5 minutes to 11 minutes in length, and backing that only includes piano, bass, and drums – letting the sound of Toots take center stage. Titles include a great original, "Shade Of Love", written by pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – and other tracks include "Night Train", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Georgia On My Mind", and "Fallin In Love With Love". ✨✧ Toots Thielemans with Georges ArvanitasJazz In Paris – Blues Pour Flirter ... CD
Universal (France), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of jazz from Toots Thielemans – easily one of his best-ever jazz efforts, with a straight no-nonsense sound that you don't hear from some of his other work! The session was recorded in Paris in 1961, and the original LP issue of the material has been hard to come by for years – which is what makes this low-priced reissued even nicer to have. Thielemans plays guitar with a trio led by pianist Georges Arvanitas, with Roland Lobligeois on bass and Philippe Combelle on drums – and although a few cuts have Toots' trademark vocalization in the background, the main focus is on his guitar work and the piano solos of Arvanitas. Titles include "Flirt", "Winter In Madrid", "Hot Toddy", "Bag's Groove", "Try A Little Tenderness", and "Le Trottoir". CD

Smooth and silky jazz funk from trombonist Urbie Green – a record that's much more in a mainstream R&B fusion mode than his earlier work – yet also arranged by David Matthews in a soulful style that still keeps things pretty real on the best cuts! The group's a good one for the mellow groove of the material – and includes Mike Mainieri on keyboards, Eric Gale on guitar, Jeremy Steig on flute, and Toots Thielemans laying down a bit of harmonica – all kicking back in classic 70s CTI styles. Titles include the nice modal groover "Mertensia", plus "Manteca", "Foxglove Suite", "Another Star", and "Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Quincy JonesQuincy Jones Explores The Music Of Henry Mancini ... LP
Mercury, 1964. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Quincy Jones meets Henry Mancini – and the result is an album that's as groovy as it is jazzy – every bit as wonderful as you might expect, and with a few surprising touches as well! Given that Mancini's tunes are already pretty darn great on their own – and plenty jazzy too – it's amazing to hear Quincy transform them for the record, bringing in some of the styles that would show up even more strongly in his own 60s soundtrack work – clever instrumental twists, occasional electric moments, and a growing sensitivity we never would have expected in his music a decade before. There's loads of lovely reeds – courtesy of Jerome Richardson, Seldon Powell, Zoot Sims, and Roland Kirk – and other players include Gary Burton on vibes, Mundell Lowe on guitar, Toots Thielemans on harmonica, and Phil Krauss on percussion. Titles include "Baby Elephant Walk", "Charade", "Dreamsville", "Bird Brain", "Days Of Wine And Roses", "Mr Lucky", "Pink Panther", "Moon River", "Peter Gunn", and "Odd Ball". LP, Vinyl record album

At one level, the record has Quincy taking back some of the sophisticated currents he was developing in soundtrack work of the 60s, but moving back to jazz – more groove than before, and more of a sense of space and timing – which is carried off by an excellent lineup that features plenty of electric piano from Bob James, plus work from Hubert Laws on flute, Eric Gale on guitar, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Toots Thielemans on guitar and harmonica. There's also added soulful vocals at a few points too – more chorus than lyrics, at a level that hints at the jazz/soul crossovers that Quincy would do in the 70s – on a set of tracks that's completely sublime, with titles that include "Killer Joe", "Dead End", "Walking In Space", and "Love & Peace". A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! There's loads of nice bits – like a version of "My Cherie Amour", done with vocals by Leon Ware and Minnie Riperton; a new take on "Bluesette", redone with Toots Thielemans; and the original "Beautiful Black Girl", which features rapping by The Watts Prophets! ✨✧ Joel BrandonHaven't We All ... CD
Southport, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly charming little set, from a unique Chicago jazz talent! Joel Brandon's pictured on the cover playing a flute, but he's also a vocalist – and even more surprising, a whistler! He's got a style of jazz-based whistling that's really weird – and almost has a Roland Kirk-like quality at times. There's none of the poise of Toots Thielemans' whistle, and much more of a flute-styled approach to the form – one that dips and turns with some great little twists. And the whistling tracks on the album are offset nicely by tracks that focus on Brandon's flute – played in a wonderfully introspective tone that's awash with lyrical flutters and soulful turns that we really love. Overall, the album's mostly a flute jazz record – supported by a great cast that includes Willie Pickens on piano, Billy Higgins and Morris Jennings on drums, Don Moye on percussion, and Harrison Bankhead on bass. Titles include "Lovielee", "Seamless", "Dedication", "Haven't We All", "Straight Ahead", and a nice moody take on Coltrane's "Countdown". CD

A real step forward for Quincy Jones – a record that really shows the jazzman moving into sophisticated new territory – a sound that's just right for the CTI generation! The album's got a vibe that's a bit similar to Quincy's Walking In Space album, but it's a lot deeper too – touched with some of the African elements you might guess from the title – arranged in ways that are often quite spacious, so that the tunes really take some time to find just the right groove! Backings are large, but show the leaner elements that Jones was bringing to his soundtrack work – and instrumentation includes vibes from Milt Jackson, marimba from Don Elliott, flute from Hubert Laws, soprano sax from Jerome Richardson, trumpet from Freddie Hubbard, trombone from Al Grey, and guitar from Eric Gale. Keyboards figure strongly – played by Herbie Hancock and Bob James – and special features include a bit of guitar and whistling from Toots Thielemans, plus some soulful vocals from Valerie Simpson. Players in the group include Bob Mintzer on saxes, Don Alias on percussion, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Toots Thielemans on harmonica – plus an array of brass and woodwind players who expand the core sound tremendously. ✨✧ Nat Adderley, Benny Bailey & Ake PerssonMusic Of Quincy Jones – As Played Nat Adderley, Benny Bailey, Ake Persson, Coleman Hawkins & Lucky Thompson ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1959/1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early Quincy Jones jazz tunes – played by a legendary crew of musicians – led in separate spots by Benny Bailey, Nat Adderly, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson and Toots Thielemans! The tunes are from the Late 50s/early 60s era when young Quincy was being groomed to be another Duke Ellington (boy, if the world only knew!) The sessions were cut in Sweden with a rotation of Swedish players, plus American Joe Harris on drums on some tracks – and some of the work originally appeared on a Benny Bailey album for Argo, as well as on a Roy Haynes set for Mercury. The material is a batch of mostly clean-toned, bop-learned jazz, with some leisurely paced bluesy arrangements in spots. Tracks include "The Golden Touch", "Jones Beach", "Tiem Midnight Sun Never Sets", "Fallen Feathers", "Sister Sadie", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "That Old Black Magic", "I Remember You" and more. ✨✧ Baden PowellTempo Feliz ... CD
Forma/Polygram (Japan), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful early album from Baden Powell, and a really unique one as well – as the set features some guest work from harmonica player Mauricio Einhorn – a very jazzy talent who was a bit like the Toots Thielemans of Brazil at the time! The combination of harmonica and acoustic guitar is great – and production is handled by Roberto Quartin – the sonic maestro who really manages to bring a lot out of this very special meeting of talents. The small combo features bass from Edison Lobo and drums from Chico Batera – and titles include "A Chuva", "Pro Forma", "Tempo Feliz", "Deixa", and "Apelo". CD

✨✧ Louis Van Dyke with Mark Murphy, Dave Pike, et alMetro's Midnight Music – Rare Jazz Tracks From The Dutch NOS Radio Show 1970 to 1975 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A rare jazz treasure from the European scene of the early 70s – killer material from a wealth of American artists and local talents – all done as special sessions for Dutch radio, and never issued to the public on record! Despite the radio origins of the music, the sound here is tremendous – easily on a par with the best MPS sessions of the time – which is no surprise, given that many of the artists here worked in similar circles! The first half of the set features the trio of pianist Louis Van Dyke augmented with guests who include Mark Murphy, Helen Merrill, Eddie Jefferson, Toots Thielemans, Herb Geller, and Dave Pike – all stepping out into the spotlight while Van Dyke's combo backs them up with lively grooves that are often heavy on bossa influences! The second half features larger orchestrations from The Metropole Orchestra – a soaring big band who groove wonderfully, often in support of vocals from Murphy or Greetje Kauffeld, but also featuring instrumental solos from European players Ack Van Rooyen, Piet Nordijk, Ferdinand Povel, and others. The whole set is worth it alone for the vocals of Murphy – because the record easily stands as some of his best work ever from this decade – and given how great Mark was at the time, that's really saying a lot! Small group titles include "Children Of The Sun", "So What", "Love Sick", "Sao Paulo", "Con Alma", "Seventh Day", and "Falling In Love With Love" – and bigger group numbers include "Out Of This World", "My Shining Hour", "Let's Fall In Love", "Get Happy", "I'll Wind", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Paper Moon", "One For My Baby", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and "That Old Black Magic". 37 tracks in all!
