Raw Poetic & Damu The FudgemunkLaminated Skies ... LP
Def Presse, 2022. New Copy ... $26.99 30.98
Raw Poetic and Damu The Fudgemunk cut a great record with jazz legend Archie Shepp – and this set features the same great backing group, although with less of the jazz component of that previous set! There's some fantastic live drums on the record, which really creates a sense of complexity in the rhythms – echoed by the vocals, too, which are at the most sophisticated you might expect from the duo – and mixed with a range of keyboards, vibes, guitar, and other instrumentation! Titles include "Guide", "Ralph Ellison", "Chewing Gum", "Sunny Water", "Reflected Pearls", and "Cadillac". LP, Vinyl record album

Noel Akchote/Mary Halvorson/Bill FrisellLoving Highsmith ... CD
Ayler (Sweden), 2022. New Copy ... $25.99 28.99
A pair of duets, greatly expanded here – and taken way past their initial use as music for a really lovely film about the author Patricia Highsmith! There's nothing really soundtrack-like about the music – although the setting has given all the artists involved a chance to work on some shorter tracks that have a different vibe than you'd get in more longform improvisation – beautifully personal, almost poetic moments – as guitarist Noel Ackchote duets first with Mary Halvorson on CD1, then with Bill Frisell on CD2 – a guitar-heavy package that's full of beautiful sounds throughout! Both CDs features a number of tracks used in the film, plus lots more session material too – with the original theme "Death Is Only A Dream" on both, plus many improvisations, and a few remakes of standards too. ✨✧ Laurie AndersonBig Science ... CD
Warner, 1982. Used ... $4.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". CD

Damu The FudgemunkConversation Peace ... CD
KPM/Def Presse, 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A fantastic album from Damu The Fudgemunk, and a set that kicks off a whole new series in the sound library universe too – one that has contemporary producers getting access to classic samples from the KPM Sound Library catalog, while also adding their own music to the label too! Here, Damu samples classic sound library funk by Johnny Pearson, Johnny Hawksworth, Yvan Julien, Alan Hawkshaw, and other KPM giants – sometimes serving up instrumentals, but often adding in contributions from guests who include Raw Poetic, Blu, Nitty Scott, and Insight Innovates. Given that the core sounds are right up our alley, the record sounds fantastic – and if you're worried about this not being close enough to Damu's other records, put those fears aside – as the whole thing more than lives up to that legacy too. Titles include "Upload Optimism", "Enchanted Spirits", "Reporting", "Power Of Mind", "God Speed", and the "For Better Or Worse" suite. CD

Sadik HakimSadik Hakim (London Suite) ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of the greatest moments ever from pianist Sadik Hakim – a player most people know for his contribution to the American bop scene of the late 40s – but an artist who grew even more strongly during his later years in Montreal! This album's a real highlight from that overlooked time in Hakim's career – a set that not only has the musician playing both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, but which also highlights his tremendous skill as a writer, too – with a richness that easily rivals the best on the European scene of the time – such as some of our favorite London jazz musicians, or the great work on MPS. Side one features the extended "London Suite" – a work that's poetic, but also pretty darn groovy too – and side two features on shorter compositions that include "Liliane", "Grey Cup Caper", and "Moon In Aquarius" – all carried off beautifully by a group that includes Al Khabyyr Sayyd Abdul on alto and flute, Billy Robinson on tenor, and Peter Leitch on guitar. Keith JarrettFacing You ... LP
ECM, 1972. Sealed ... $29.99
A key early moment for Keith Jarrett – his first-ever solo album, recorded in the early 70s for ECM – and the start of a huge legacy of later work! Before this set, Jarrett had recorded some compelling trio material for Atlantic – and he was also exploring more spiritually soulful tones over at Impulse Records too. But this record is something else entirely – a new showcase for his sensitive expressions – the kind of angular, yet poetic lines that sparkled strongly in the trio recordings, yet stand out even more on their own! Tunes are beautifully penned – and titles include "In Front", "Ritooria", "Lalene", "Starbright", "Vapallia", and "Semblence". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Masabumi Kikuchi/Masahiko Togashi/Gary PeacockPoesy – The Man Who Keeps Washing His Hands (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
A set that definitely lives up to the poetry promised in its title – with none of the too-clean sounds you might guess from its hand-washing reference either! The album's one of the freest, most organic sessions we've heard from pianist Masabumi Kikuchi – almost improvised at points, but with a poetic cohesion in the piano lines that's really great – kind of an offbeat sense of lyricism that points in the same directions that Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett were heading in the late 60s. Drummer Masahiko Togashi plays lots of cool percussion and even a bit of gong – and Gary Peacock's bass here is as great as on any of his other excellent Japanese recordings. Titles include "Dreams", "The Trap", "The Milky Way", "Apple", "Get Magic Again", and "End". CD

Krzysztof KomedaMam Tu Swoj Dom/Ubranie Prawie Nowe ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1963. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Two very early soundtracks from legendary Polish modernist Krzystof Komeda – both very different than his 60s work for Roman Polanski, but equally striking overall! The work for Mam Tu Swoj Dom is performed on short tracks handled by different instrumental groupings – with piano, flute, and bass often dancing around in these really spare but lovely ways – melodic, but very blue-tinged too – on titles that have the instrumentation of chamber jazz, but a much more personal, very poetic sort of quality – very vivid, even without the images on the screen. There's a similar feel to the music for Ubranie Prawie Nowe, but handled with different instrumentation – tunes are often a bit longer, and make use of woodwind interplay at a level that's as spare as on the first film, but with a quality that's almost painter-like at times, and which expands in instrumentation as the soundtrack moves on. This is the first time we've heard the music for either film – and they're presented here in a great edition, with notes in both English and Polish. CD

Edu KriegerEdu Krieger ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2007. Used ... $2.99
Edu Krieger's written a few songs for Maria Rita, but he's an even more compelling artist on his own – a musician who mixes samba roots with a bit more electric guitar – all in a blend that's quite organic and quite unique! There's a warm, personal sensibility to many of these tunes – but also not one that's too sleepy, or singer/songwriter also – almost that first blend of old and new that we loved hearing in initial music from Lenine or Otto a number of years back, but served up here with a stripped-down, personal sort of feel. Acoustic instrumentation mixes nicely with a few light beats and guitar – and Krieger's vocals have a poetic flow that's extremely compelling, even without a knowledge of the language. Titles include "Ciranda Do Mundo", "Novo Amor", "Desafio", "A Escada", "Temporais", "Saber Ganhar", and "Volta Pra Voce". CD

Nirvana's final album – one that's as poetic as it is heavy, and as beautiful as it is brutal! In Utero's legacy gets greater and greater over the years, not only because its mastermind extinguished himself not too long after it's release, but more than that, it's simply one of the greatest rock albums of its time. Angry, fed up, yet oddly righteous in its angst, in a way that makes it easy to get into despite all the raw nerve anguish. William Parker & The Little Huey Creative Music OrRaincoat In The River Vol 1 – ICA Concert ... CD
Eremite, 1991. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
William Parker's a player who always adds a lot to an improvisation session, but he's also a hell of a composer, and a visionary leader too – able to work in these large concepts and musical ideas that seem to come off better than most similar work by any of his contemporaries! There's a sense of power and vision to this record that recalls some of the most ambitious projects on Soul Note/Black Saint from the start of the 80s – an ability to mix improvisation with richer shades and group movements – as Parker directs a lineup that includes reeds from Rob Brown, Ori Kaplan, Charles Waters, and Darryl Foster – and trombones from Steve Swell and Alex Lodico, trumpet from Roy Campbell and Richard Rodriguez, and a bit of vocals from Leena Conquest. The performance has a majesty that takes us back to the Arkestra at their best – but the poetic power of the music is also all Parker's own as well. SpirogyraFuture Won't Be Long – The Albums 1971 to 1973 (St Radiguns/Old Boot Wine/Bells Boots & Shambles/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 39.99
Three classic albums from this underground group – brought together in a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is St Radiguns – the debut album from one of the most unique groups of their generation – a group who were partway between acid folk and proggy rock – yet with qualities that were also uniquely their own as well! The group were equally at home with acoustic and electric instruments – but play with a sinister edge that almost hints at a Wicker Man side of the universe, while occasionally warming things up with more intimate, poetic moments. The vocals are great – especially the male leads of Martin Cockerham, which we prefer a bit more to the female work from Barbara Gaskin – and the tunes have this sense of darkness that still gives the album a hell of an edge after all these years. Titles include "The Future Won't Be Long", "Island", "Magical Mary", "Captain's Log", "Time Will Tell", "We Were A Happy Crew", and "The Duke Of Beaufoot". Next is Old Boot Wine – compelling sounds from Spirogyra – a group who have some proggish elements, but also a folksy sensibility too – which makes for a really wonderful balance between jamming moments and more intimate sounds! Guitar and keyboards take plenty of place in the mix – often spinning out strongly – but the group also features a fair bit of acoustic guitar, too – mixed with lovely vocals from Barbara Gaskin, and fragile male leads from Martin Cockerham. Tunes have a slightly poetic quality, but never in a drippy way – and the production is full one minute, light the next – which can really make for a nice sense of shading to the tunes. Titles include "Dangerous Dave", "A Canterbury Tale", "Grandad", "World's Eyes", "Wings Of Thunder", and "Disraeli's Problem". Last is Bells Boots & Shambles – a set that has the group down to a duo – just singer Barbara Gaskin and guitarist/vocalist Martin Cockerham – but have actually used that shift to bring in some additional musicians too, and really find a great way to expand their sound! The album's got some of the most compelling arrangements we've heard from the group – and uses light cello, violin, trumpet, and flute to underscore the sense of color and tone we've always loved in their music – particularly some of those slightly-dark, slightly-spooky elements that always gave them a surprising edge. There's a mix of timeless roots and present darkness in the music that's very unique – and titles include "The Sergeant Says", "Spiggly", "The Furthest Point", "Old Boot Wine", "Parallel Lines Never Separate", and the longer "In The Western World". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Window", "Melody Maker Man", "Turn Again Lane", "Counting The Cars", and "I Hear You're Going Somewhere". VariousJ Jazz – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1984 ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. ✨✧ Fall1982 (Hex Enduction Hour/Room To Live/In A Hole/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 6CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing package – three great albums by The Fall, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hex Enduction Hour – one of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! The jagged lyricism of Mark E Smith is razor-sharp – as is the instrumentation, which is heavy on that trademark noisy guitar from Craig Scanlon, weird keyboards from Marc Riley, and the driving power of the double drummers in the group! The music is every bit as textually explosive as the words on the cover – and titles include "Who Makes The Nazis", "And This Day", "Jawbone & The Air Rifle", "The Classical", "Mere Psued Mag Ed", "Fortress/Deer Park", and the classic "Hip Priest". Is Room To Live the greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". In A Hole is a fantastic double-length live album by The Fall – recorded at a time when the group was at the height of their creative powers! Tracks are pulled from their important early albums and singles, and delivered with a searing intensity that shows just how much the group could hang on to their jagged edge and razor-sharp wit in front of a live audience – especially one on the other side of the globe! Titles include "The Container Drivers", "Fantastic Life", "English Scheme", "Impression Of J Temperance", "Room To Live", "Hip Priest", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Backdrop", "Hard Life In The Country", "Who Makes The Nazis", "Gramme Friday", "Slags Slates Etc", and "Look Know". Box set features a bonus CD with Sessions, Singles, and Soundchecks – including material from live sets in Leeds, Manchester, and London, plus John Peel material from 1981. And another bonus CD with a full live set recorded in Melbourne, in 1982 – 14 tracks in all! CD

For years, Tommy's had a great talent for being as bopper, yet as sensitive as a mellower, more lyrical player too – a brilliant combination that shows up instantly in the first few notes of this set – a late 80s recording that's filled with warmth and subtle imagination. The trio features George Mraz on bass and Kenny Washington on drums – the latter of whom really gets things swinging in some great gentle ways – and titles include "Raincheck", "Lament", "Caravan", "Voce Abuso", "Mean Streets", and "That Tired Routine Called Love". Lion, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very groovy record from a very unique band – a homegrown set by an obscure Pennsylvania combo from the 70s – a group who were equally schooled in jazz fusion and progressive rock! Probe 10 are a rock group at their core, but they've also drank heavily from the brew of 70s Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever, and electric Miles Davis – and use all those elements to forge these really creative explorations in music – tracks that stretch out with some great lines on Fender Rhodes, and also feature solos on trumpet, flute, and guitar – mixed with vocals that are sometimes surprisingly poetic. The best passages are instrumental – and these guys definitely have a King Crimson inspiration, too, although maybe without the chops – and titles include "There Is A Universe", "Invasion Of The Mallandroids", "Intergalactic Crossfire", "To Improvise A Dream", and "Galaxy Five". ✨✧ Mason WilliamsMason Williams Phonograph Record/Ear Show/Music By/Handmade/Sharepickers ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Five really inventive albums from the great Mason Williams – presented here in a single package! First up is the Mason Williams Phonograph Record – amazing stuff, one of those records you see for years, and always pass by – but which yields some real surprises once you dig in! Mason Williams is one of the cooler cats in the Warner Brothers stable of the late 60s – but he's also one of the more subtle, too – a folkie at heart, but an artist with a really great sense of wit, warmth, and variety – very much in the best genre-stepping style of the Burbank scene of the time. The set features, of course, Mason's huge hit "Classical Gas" – an instrumental you'll recognize instantly – but next to that is the sublime "Baroque A Nova", a very cool scatting harmony track that's like some lost late 60s Hugo Montenegro gem – and the camp psych gem "The Prince's Panties" – done with all the wit of late 60s Warner – as is the whole album! Other tracks include "Wanderlove", "Overture", "All The Time", and "She's Gone Away". Next is the Mason Williams Ear Show – a wonderfully weird record from the mighty Mason Williams – a set that's filled with lots of cool little surprises at each new twist and turn – yet which also comes across with a really solid, tuneful feel overall! The album's got a bit of folk, a bit of moog, and a bit of kitsch – but has a way of serving it all up with the kind of warmth and wit we love so much in that unique late 60s Warner Brothers moment – the same sort of vibe you might get from Van Dyke Parks or Harpers Bizarre at their best. Some tunes have Mason Williams singing these beautifully poetic lyrics straight, while others evoke the playful feel of his appearances on the Smothers Brothers Show – but things are really balanced throughout, and give the record that sense of discovery we hardly ever find in albums these days. Titles include a new version of "Baroque A Nova" from Mason's first album, the cool electronic "Generatah Oscillatah" instrumental, the groovy "Last Great Waltz", a "One Minute Commercial", and a wild remake of "Cinderella Rockefella" – plus "Saturday Night At The World", "$13 Stella", and "Whistle Hear". Music By Mason Williams is sublime genius from Mason – one of the most subtle talents in the Warner hip stable at the time – more so than even Jack Nitzsche or Van Dyke Parks! The album is a non-ironic blend of soundtrack styles, country music, and even some pseudo classical numbers – all handled with that youthful sense of nostalgic loss that seems to oddly characterize so much of the best work of the late 60s Warner scene. Titles include "Cowboy Buckaroo", "J Edgar Swoop", "Sunflower", "A Major Thang", "The Brothers Theme", and "Bucko's Memoirs". Handmade is a record that's lovingly handmade by Warner studio genius Mason Williams – an artist who, like so many of Warner's great talents of the late 60s, started out in folk, but soon exploded to great new heights in the recording freedom offered by the label – as you'll hear in this really incredible set! Williams mixes acoustic instrumentation with larger arrangements, offbeat rhythms, and occasional vocals – post-folk, post-sunshine pop, and with these hip undercurrents that were barely understood in the right way at the time – even though Mason himself was enough of a popular figure for some folks. The songwriting is smart, and the instrumentation and arrangements even more so – as you'll hear on a great reworking of his famous "Classical Gas", plus "Jose's Piece", "Find A Reason To Believe", "Saturday Night At The World", "Tomato Vendetta", and "It's Over". Sharepickers is the last album in an amazing run of records that Mason Williams did for Warner Brothers – impossible to define in easy terms, as the whole thing is a mix of acoustic instrumentation, larger arrangements, occasional vocals, and this wonderful interplay between underground artists and top-shelf studio talents on the LA scene of the time! Williams' instrumental chops alone would have made the record great – but he really knocks it out of the park with his overall conception, which fits in that unique late 60s/early 70s Warner space perfectly, next to albums by Van Dyke Parks, Neon Philharmonic, John Hartford, and some of the other genre-breaking talents on the label. Titles include "Train Ride In G", "Poor Little Robin", "Godsend", "Linda Crest Lament", "A Little Bit Of Time", "Largo De Lux", and "Here I Am Again". CD

The book's got much of the appeal of Robert Wyatt album covers and CD booklets over the past few decades – many of which have Benge's contributions too – and the artwork is just in just the right balance next to the words, which are further illuminated by some non-lyrical passages that are a great addition to the book. A beautiful record from this really fantastic group – Friends & Neighbors, who take their name from Ornette Coleman, but deliver music that soars out far beyond that initial influence – all with a soulful, spiritual quality that's all their own! Some tunes have a focus, rhythm, and swing – that on the money quality that makes early romping Ornette so great – but others have a looser, more poetic approach to sound – making especially great use of the horn work of Andre Roligheten on tenor, flute, bass clarinet, and bass saxophone, and the trumpet and flugelhorn of Thomas Johansson. Light percussion also adds some great elements too – handled both by Johansson and drummer Tollef Ostvang – and the rest of the group features Oscar Gronberg on piano and Jon Rune Strom on bass. There's a sense of cohesive beauty to the record that's really wonderful – and titles include "Father's Beauty", "The Earth Is #", "Sidelinja", "Joseph", and "Halifax". CD

✨✧ Sonny Simmons & Moksha SamnyasinNomadic ... CD
Svart (Finland), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual setting for reedman Sonny Simmons – a set that's quite different than his spiritual avant classics, as it has him working with the rockish trio Moksha Samnyasin! Yet the sound is still quite spiritual, too – as the tracks are long, open, and extremely evocative – each with very poetic titles, and a sound that mixes the brooding electric bass of Thomas Bellier with lighter lines on sitar from Michel Kristof – creating a balance that's perfect for the exploratory notes that Simmons brings to the music on Cor Anglais and alto sax! Drummer Sebastien Bismuth can play with a heavy sound at times – kicking in dark energy that unites him with the bass – but our favorite moments are when he's more laidback, and working more with percussion and electronics, and letting Simmons dominate the lead more strongly. Titles include "Help Them Through This World", "We Are Entering The Place Of That", "When It Comes I Don't Fight It", and "I Put It In A Dark Area Where I Can't Remember No More". CD

There's an understated quality to the record that's really nice – none of the too-modern modes you might guess from the cover image (we'll admit that sometimes we're suspicious of contemporary Blue Note mixing it up too much) – and instead a style that's mighty fresh, yet still pretty earthy – modern, yet never too outside – and a sense of soul that informs proceedings and really helps keep things on track. Jugoton (Croatia), 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 26.99
A really unique album from Yugoslavian group Angel's Breath – one recorded in Brazil, which might come as no surprise, given that one of the members of the duo is Mitar Subotic Suba – who you'll also know from his groundbreaking album Sao Paulo Confessions! Suba got his start in Serbia, but was crucial in the Brazilian advances in the 90s before his too-early death in 1999 – and the record's definitely got some of the same appeal as the best music of the scene from Chico Science or Arnaldo Antunes – especially in the way it uses offbeat guitar lines, crispy electronics, and unusual rhythms next to lyrics that often feel as poetically experimental as they are tuneful! The whole thing's very difficult to describe, but that really gives it a hell of a lot of charm – and if it were not for the turmoil in Yugoslavia at the time, the set might have seen bigger global attention from the same cultural scene who were embracing Brazilian experiments of the period. Bob DylanAnother Side of Bob Dylan ... CD
Columbia, 1964. Used ... $3.99
Bob's fourth record, and close runner up to Freewheelin' as the masterpiece of this early stage of his career. While the overly arch Times They Are A Changin' pretty much stood as the cornerstone of classifiable folk rock at the time, Another Side is just that. Dense, elliptical, and downright surreal at times, with some of the protesty stuff that made the media so happy & hungry, but much more layered and poetic. Another Side is also much more reverent of and indebted to the Harry Smith field recordings that Bob studied so hard, the stuff that finally caught on with the general public in the early 90s. Titles include "Spanish Harlem Incident", "It Ain't Me Babe", "Ballad In Plain D", "Black Crow Blues", "I Don't Believe You", "Motorpsycho Nitemare", "To Ramona", "Chimes Of Freedom", "My Back Pages", and "I Shall Be Free No 10". CD
(2003 remastered edition.)

✨✧ Maggot BrainMaggot Brain – Issue #7 (December/January/February 2022) ... Magazine
Maggot Brain/Third Man, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Maggot Brain keeps on growing and growing – really reaching mind-expanding territory this special seventh issue, at a level that goes far beyond the large features on Lou Reed and Loaded pictured on the cover! There's a wealth of different shorter features, mixed with artwork and other articles too – bits on Lee Scratch Perry, Pastor TL Barrett, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Dane Wareham, The Goats, and the late 80s underground noise scene around Detroit – plus an especially strange feature on Doug Henning and his relationship to glam rock in Canada! As always, its less the topics than the way they're handled that makes the magazine so great – and Maggot Brain is definitely one of those publications that really rewards a cover-to-cover read – like the old classics Grand Royal, Wax Poetics, or even Motorbooty. ✨✧ Wax PoeticsWax Poetics Vol 2 – Issue 3 ... Magazine
Wax Poetics, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great issue of the relaunched Wax Poetics – one that has the magazine back to all its early glory, with page after page of wonderful images and deep coverage of the music we love! This time around the split covers broadcast two of the issue's best articles – a long look at the keyboard genius of Patrice Rushen, hero of both jazz and soul – and a history of electronic sounds on the Detroit scene, including Wajeed, who is on the cover – moving back to the early experiments of Juan Atkins and others! There's plenty more, too – articles on Hammond hero Shirley Scott, Bill Evans' work at the Village Vanguard, and more on Joseph Bowie, Mo Wax Records, Joyce, Keiya, Masta Ace, The Chambers Brothers, and the Alpha Boys School – a key part of Jamaican music history! As usual, the art and photography is as great as the writing – making this squarebound publication feel more like a book than a magazine. Magazine

Wax Poetics, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wax Poetics is back in action, and maybe even better than ever – really returning to its focus on funk and soul classics, and the kind of music that's always put the publication at the top of our reading pile, year after year! In addition to Marvin Gaye, featured on the cover, the issue has great articles on Tammi Terrell, Sergio Mendes, Herb Alpert, Cymande, Toots Hibbert, Redbone, and artist Lee Quinones – plus a look at the legendary Harlem World club and family of records! There's other great bits too – including a re:discovery feature that looks at rare albums – and the production quality is superb, almost 150 heavy pages, full color throughout! Magazine

✨✧ Moreno VelosoCoisa Boa ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2014. Used ... $8.99
A rich new chapter in the career of Moreno Veloso – a set that steps off strongly from his work with the +2 trio, but in ways that are even more personal and poetic than before! The shift is a bit like that time when Caetano Veloso took all his previous experiments and found a more intimate style in his music during the 70s – although Moreno is always very much his own man here, and manages to work with a range of elements, yet still never lose a focus in his musical vision. Domenico and Kassin are still along for some tracks, but the record also brings in diverse production help from Daniel Jobim, Melvin Gibbs, and even Gal Costa – who are among the many partners working here with Moreno and core producer Pedro Sa to shape the rich sound of the record. Instrumentation is a warm mix of acoustic with electric undertones – and titles include "La E Ca", "Um Passo A Frente", "Coisa Boa", "Jacare Coruja", "Hoje", "Nao Acorde O Nenem", "De Tentar Voltar", and "Num Galho De Acaias".
